Tapping into the Belt and Road cities’ colourful reserve of history and cultural potentials, Zuni Icosahedron organises Hong Kong Belt-Road Cityto-City Cultural Exchange Conference 2018— Asian Strategy, which is set to explore and exploit the opportunities strategically in establishing cultural networks of think tank and applied researches combined, in the hope of fostering sustainable cultural exchanges and diversified creative collaborations around the globe.

The Conference consolidates and shares the cases of our partnered cultural institutions, and their operational models in programming cultural exchange schemes and activities with regard to their potentials and limitations of prospective cultural development locally and globally. Through the cooperation of these institutions, the development of Asian Cross-Cultural Belt-Road Think Tank will be discussed and explored.

A pioneer of experimental performance, video, and installation art in the Sinophone region, and the Co-Artistic Director of Zuni Icosahedron Hong Kong’s leading experimental arts company. Yung is the recipient of the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2015 Artist of the Year (Drama) (2016), the Fukuoka Prize Laureate - Arts and Culture (2014), the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (2009), and of the UNESCO Music Theatre NOW Award (2008).
Mathias Woo is the Co-Artistic Director cum Executive Director of Zuni Icosahedron. As a scriptwriter, director, producer and curator, Woo is a pioneer in cross-boundary and multi-media theatre. He is recognised for his portfolio of more than 60 original theatre works, which have been invited to cities around the globe and major Chinese cities. Woo’s theatre works explore a wide range of subjects including literature, history, architecture, religion, current political affairs, and philosophy. In 2009, Woo initiated and curated “Architecture is Art Festival”, the first art festival with architecture as the central topic in Hong Kong.

A cultural practitioner in theater and mixed media art as a producer, administrator, curator and educator since 1987; an MA in Media Education from University of London; WyW is now based in both Berlin and Hong Kong. ANANTHAKRISHNAN specialises in Indian performance studies and has published articles on Indian theatre in journals such as Theatre India and Theatre Research International, contributing to various anthologies and encyclopedias.
As Director of Tai Kwun, Timothy Calnin is responsible for guiding a team of passionate professionals in developing Tai Kwun into Hong Kong’s best-loved destination for heritage, arts and lifestyle enjoyment.

Timothy Calnin has held senior positions with leading musical and artistic organisations in Australia, Europe and Asia, which included senior executive roles at the Sydney Opera House, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
As executive committee member of the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR) and founding general secretary of the Indian Society for Theatre Research (ISTR), ANANTHAKRISHNAN has taken up different research initiatives on theatre to foster the research culture in the field.

博聞藝術基金會董事 Born in Hangzhou, China, Pure Yichun CHEN now lives with her family in Zurich, Switzerland. She holds an MA in Luxury Brand Management from INSEEC, Paris. Following a career in Fashion where she held senior positions at Vogue China and InStyle China, she now oversees the International activities of Bowen Art Foundation as a board member. Having lived abroad for many years, Pure is passionate about sharing Chinese culture and art.
The Institut Français de Fès, Morocco invited Jitti CHOMPEE in 2013 for an artist-in-residency programme and again at Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris in 2014. In 2015, he was a guest choreographer for the Nederlandse Reisopera (Les pêcheurs de perles) and Escalandrum (Astor Piazzolla) in Buenos Aires. In 2016, Jitti was granted a residency by the Kylián Foundation at Korzo Theatre in The Hague. He was invited to ‘One Table Two Chairs—Euro-Asia Young Performing Artists Cross-Cultural Exchange and Education Program’ as a guest artist in 2017.

Winsome Chow is a senior arts administrator of Hong Kong, experienced in the planning and management of performing arts venues, presentation of arts programmes, devising and implementing funding schemes for the arts and collaboration initiatives as well as the promotion of cultural exchange. Before joining the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC), she worked in the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong Government where she managed 14 performing arts centres and the presentation of performing arts programmes on a territory-wide basis. Her career path was marked by a number of festivals and celebratory events, including the opening of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in 1978 and the founding of New Vision Arts Festival and World Cultures Festival.
Cooper is widely recognised as a leader in the performing arts field, presenting traditional and contemporary works by Asian and Asian American artists within a strong cultural context. She is a frequent participant at major conferences and commentator in the media (CNN, ABC, WNYC, New York Times) addressing Asian performing arts, international arts exchange and cultural diplomacy. Cooper has commissioned, produced and presented contemporary performances in music, dance, opera and theatre. She was awarded the Dawson Award for sustained programmatic excellence from the Association of Performing Arts Presenters, a Borough of Manhattan award for preserving cultural diversity in New York City, a national Global Citizen Diplomacy award for best practices in performing arts and an ‘Izzy’ (Isadora Duncan) for the programming excellence for Festival of Indonesia.

Richard Gough is Artistic Director of the Centre for Performance Research (CPR), Professor of Music & Performance in the Faculty of Creative Industries at the University of South Wales, Cardiff, Wales, UK and General Editor of Performance Research (The Journal of Performance Arts published eight issues annually by Routledge, Taylor & Francis). He was the founding President (1997-2001) of Performance Studies international (PSi) and he has curated and organized numerous conference and workshops over the last 40 years, as well as directing and lecturing internationally.
Joseph Gonzales has been a Professor at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts since 2016, and served as the Dean of Dance at the National Academy of Arts in Malaysia (1999-2015). He has performed/choreographed professionally in multiple genres of dance, theatre and music since 1981. He has written several books on contemporary dance in Malaysia, and presents on various topics at international conferences. He currently reviews dance for the Hong Kong Dance Journal. He is also a choreographer, curator of international festivals, Co-Chairman of Asian Dance Committee, South Korea (since 2011), and Founder of ASK Dance Company, a full-time professional dance company in Malaysia.

Kok Heng Leun is a prominent figure in the Singapore arts scene, having built his artistic career as a theatre director, playwright, dramaturg and educator. Heng Leun is known for his ability to engage the community on various issues through the arts, championing civil discourse across different segments of society. His work in the theatre began almost 30 years ago, some notable directorial works include Happy, Drift, Trick or Threat, and Manifesto. Heng Leun’s contributions to the arts have earned him the National Arts Council Singapore Young Artist Award in 2000 and the National Arts Council Cultural Fellowship in 2014. Heng Leun was a Nominated Member of Parliament of Singapore from 2016 to 2018.

LEE Jia Ping is an Honorary Council Member of Badan Warisan Malaysia, as well as a member of core strategic group that seeks to revitalize George Town, the UNESCO World Heritage Site. She graduated from University of Melbourne, majoring in Political Science (International Relations). LI Siu-leung is currently Adjunct Professor of Cultural Studies at Lingnan University, and a Music Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, LI was previously Head of Lingnan’s Cultural Studies, Dean and Professor of the School of Chinese Opera at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Published in gender and Chinese opera, Hong Kong film and pop culture, LI has been serving on various performing arts and intangible cultural heritage committees of the HKSAR Government, including the Cantonese Opera Development Advisory Committee, the Ko Shan Theatre Cantonese Opera Education and Information Centre Work Group, the Chinese Traditional Performing Arts Panel of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

As a well-respected mentor, and an advocate for cultural policy in Thailand, she experiments the fusion of traditional Thai elements with contemporary theatre presentation techniques, using theatre to promote the understanding of education and Buddhist principles. From 2000 to 2006, he directed theatres, including the Thalia Theater Hamburg, Schauspiel Graz, Staatstheater Mainz, Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Weimar German National Theatre, and Jena theatre. From 1993 to 2000, he was the leading director of the Staatstheater in Hannover; from 1989 to 1993, the leading director of the Stadttheater Konstanz; from 1984 to 1988, the artistic director of the Tübinger Zimmertheater.

Widely regarded as one of the foremost harmonicists in the world, Gordon Lee is a graduate of The Education University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor’s Degree in Creative Arts and Culture majoring in Music. In 2017, Gordon was the Champion of World Harmonica Festival, the highest level of harmonica competition in the world.

Specializing in the Monkey play of Clown and mastering martial arts skills, Chang Yu-Chau studied under the renowned Mr. Zhang Chunhua and received various performing arts awards. He has performed with the Beijing Opera Troupe of NTCPA and acted as the deputy head, having toured performances and teaching demonstrations in Europe, the United States, Asia and Central and South America.
In 2011, Gordon was elected as one of the “Young Music Makers” of RTHK Radio at the age of 19. In 2012, he was the Champion of the Asia Pacific Harmonica Festival. NGET Rady is a Classical Cambodian and contemporary dance artist who began his dance training in 1999, specializing in the monkey role of Lakhaon Kaol, the Cambodian classical male masked dance form. He graduated with a BA in Choreographic Arts from the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh in August 2013. Rady has toured as a classical and contemporary dancer to Europe and throughout Asia as well as participated in many contemporary dance workshops. He was a featured dancer in CRACK – a new work of Cambodian contemporary dance by German choreographer Arco Renz – which was awarded the 2012 ZKB Patronage Prize in Zurich, Switzerland in 2012.

PARK Hobin graduated from Seoul Arts College. In 1994, he was awarded Best Young Choreographer with the trio Death of a Poet. During his stay in France from 1995 to 1996, he performed his solo work, L'oiseau la tête pleine, at the Swedish Cultural Centre, Paris and the Open Theatre Dance Festival, Greece. Hobin was awarded a MAMPIST Scholarship by Samsung Foundation of Culture. He led the Dance Company JoBac from 1996-2003 and, in 2004, he founded Dance Theater CcadoO. Park's Full Moon, received the 2008 Critics Price by the Dance Critics Association of Korea.
SHEN Yili is a National Class One Performer and received the 28th Plum Blossom Award for Chinese Theatre. Specialising in guimendan roles, SHEN is a protégé of Wang Yingzhi, and later received personal guidance from famous Kunqu artists such as Zhang Jingxian, Zhang Xunpeng, Hua Wenyi, Zhang Jiqing, Shen Shihua, Wang Fengmei, Liang Guyin and Wang Zhiquan etc. She won the Leading Performer Award at the 11th Shanghai Magnolia Performing Arts Award. In 2009, she performed A Dream in the Peony Garden with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Shen also established “Yili School” and has held seminars on Kunqu in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Europe and the US.

Cross-Cultural Belt-Road Think Tank Workshop
15 位來自新加坡、北京、上海、廣洲、深圳、
A group of 15 Asian researchers from Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Taipei, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Macau and Hong Kong, as well as another group of 8 Hong Kong young arts administrators and practitioners, gathered in Hong Kong to participate in Belt-Road master classes, workshops, expert talks and exchanges. Both groups have carried out individual research and have presented their findings collectively. This builds towards proposals for establishing an Asian cross-cultural think tank for our two-day conference.

Zuni has been most inspiring in developing the aesthetics of theatre in Chinese society, with its experimental and subversive nature, and this could be seen in the interactive experiments in the narrative (or rather non-narrative), form and space in its early works. The same spirit could be found in the multimedia design in lights, images, sounds and spaces as in the attempts in the area of cross- media performances, to cross-boundary political and civil area, and to cross-region international cultural exchanges. The topics covered stretch from popular culture to social taboos, from the traditional to the contemporary.

As early as in 1997 and 1999, Zuni Icosahedron initiated the Hong Kong-Taipei-Shanghai- Shenzhen City-to-City Cultural Exchange Conference and Asia Arts Net respectively to promote arts and cultural policy researches and reviews. Zuni has been devoted all along to encourage exchanges among the cultural and creative industries of the cities by launching programmes such as the Chinese Creative Industries Forum, Festival of Vision: Hong Kong/ Berlin, Toki International Arts Festival and Asia- Pacific Performing Arts Network.
