O Magnum Mysterium As early as the time of prophet Isaiah (8th century BCE), the Scripture wrote about a scene with an ox and a donkey by the side of a manger (Isaiah 1:3). There, the Scripture was contrasting the lowly animals’ obedience to their master against the evildoing Israelites who had forsaken their Lord. This manger scene with the animals beside was later associated with the nativity scene of Jesus’ humble birth. From this scene, the old Latin text “O Magnum Mysterim” originated.

O magnum mysterium, et admirabile sacramentum, ut animalia viderent Dominum natum, iacentem in praesepio! Beata Virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Iesum Christum. Alleluia!

O great mystery, and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the new-born Lord, Lying in a manger! Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear Our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Alleluia

The O Magnum Mysterium Latin text has existed since the medieval period. It has been set to music ever since the time of the Gregorian chants. Over the history of music, composers from the Renaissance period (such as Byrd, Victoria and Palestrina) to the modern composers such as Lauridsen and Gjeilo have set the text to music. Of the uncountable number of Christmas themed vocal works, I personally find the text of O Magnum Mysterium most touching because from it I can see Jesus, God’s Son, coming to Earth in the most humble way, accompanied only by the most lowly animals. With a mission from God on Him, Jesus came to Earth, suffered and died. But for me, Christmas is more than a time to remember or celebrate Jesus’ birth: Jesus’ coming to Earth has great significance in that this was the last time God delivered His message to mankind directly that they had to return to Him. Christmas is a time for thankfulness, joyfulness and celebration. The New Chamber Choir (NCC)’s Christmas concert begins with the prayer song Cantique de Jean Racine (Chant from Jean Racine) with text from the French poet Jean Racine set to music by Fauré in 1865. Several of the Renaissance Christmas themed motets such as “Dixit Maria ad angelum” (Then Mary said to the Angel) and “Angelus ad pastores”(The Angel said unto the Shepherds), both by Hassler (1564-1614), “Diffusa est gratia” (Molded in Grace are Thy Lips) by Nanino (15431607) are sung. The highlights of the concert are the two contrasting settings of O Magnum Mysterium by Victoria (1548-1611) and Lauridsen (b.1943). To bring out the happy side of Christmas, we sing the Kings’ Singers settings of the Christmas carols “Veni, veni Emmanuel”, “The Gift” and the traditional French Christmas tune “In dulci jubilo” arranged by Westbrook. The concert ends with the song “Silent Night” which brings us back to the quiet night when Jesus was born.

Cantique de Jean Racine Hymn of Jean Racine Jean Racine 禱文曲 Op.11

Verb equal to God, the Almighty, our only hope, Eternal day of the earth and heavens We break the silence of the peaceful night, Divine Saviour, look upon us! Fan the fire of your powerful grace upon us, So that all Hell may flee at the sound of your voice; Shake off the sleep of a languishing soul, Who has forgotten your laws! O Christ, be kind to these faithful people Who have now gathered in thanks. Listen to the chants they offer to your immortal glory, And may they come away fulfilled with your gifts!

Cantique de Jean Racine was a work written by Fauré in 1865 (for mixed choir and organ) when he was still a music student. He wrote the work for his school’s composition competition and won first prize with it. The text came from Jean Racine (1639-1699) who wrote the prayer based on some old Latin hymn.

Angels’ Carol

Music & words by John Rutter (SATB with piano) Have you heard the sound of the angel voices, ringing out so sweetly ringing out so clear? Have you seen the star shining out so brightly, as a sign from God that Christ the Lord is here? Have you heard the news that they bring from heaven, to the humble shepherds who have waited long? Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels sing their joyful song. He is come in peace in the winter’s stillness, like a gentle snowfall in the gentle night. He is come in joy like the sun at morning. filling all the world with radiance and with light. He is come in love as the child of Mary. In a simple stable we have seen his birth. Gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels singing: ‘Peace on earth’. He will bring new light to a world in darkness. like a bright star shining in the skies above. He will bring new hope to the waiting nations. When he comes to reign in purity and love. Let the earth rejoice at the Saviour’s coming. Hassler was a composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque period. He was a respected composer of his time. Although he was a German composer, his composition style was greatly influenced by the dominating Franco Flemish School then. “Dixit Maria ad Angelum” is one of his most well known motets. The composition structure is imitative and contrapuntal.

The oldest setting to music of the Latin text “O Magnum Mysterium” existed in a Gregorian chant at the time of the medieval period. It is a responsorial chant used in Matins in Christmas time. It describes the nativity scene of Jesus’ humble birth in a manger. The text has been set to music by all different generations of composers including the two versions performed here: first one is written by the late Renaissance Spanish composer Victoria (15481611), later followed by a version written by the modern American composer Lauridsen (b.1943).

Pi

Rosaline Pi received her Bachelor of Music (Voice) from McGill University. She also studied Physics at the same time and was awarded a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. She is currently one of the most active sopranos on local scene. She performs extensively in the Baroque repertoire, Lieder and art songs. She regularly performs Baroque vocal masterpieces such as Bach’s Cantatas, St. John Passion, St. Matthew Passion, B Minor Mass, Christmas Oratorio, Easter Oratorio, many of Handel’s full length operas such as Alexander’s Feast, Semele, Samson, Judas Maccabaeus, and motets of Baroque composers such as Alessandro Scarlatti and Boccherini. Apart from performances, Pi gives vocal lectures regularly on thought history in music and vocal techniques. She is the originator and promoter of her “Simple Physics for Singing” vocal technique. Her vocal technique lectures are sold-out events. Since 2001, Pi has been a regular vocal music critic with the classical music radio. Pi taught voice at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Baptist University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). She wrote for the Hong Kong Economic Journal Monthly on vocal music in her personal column “A Journey for the Voice”. She now has her personal column on the Master-Insight online cultural platform. In recent years, Pi started to write to comment on Hong Kong’s political issues. Her political commentaries are often published in the Hong Kong Economic Journal. In 2014, Pi published her book in Chinese on the Romanticism in Schubert’s Lieder and her CD “An die Musik – Schubert Lieder by Rosaline Pi”. In the CD, “singing and recording the original classical songs using the way popular songs are sung and recorded” is something that has never been done in the history of singing and recording. Pi received her MA degree in Philosophy from CUHK in 2007. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in their Philosophy Department. Her research focus is on the late Heidegger and, in particular, using phenomenology to explain the phenomenon of “empathy”.
