The skin, hair, nails, oil, and sweat glands, are all part of what is called the integumentary [in-ˌte-gyə-ˈmen-t(ə-)rē] system. The skin is one of the body’s organs and it is the largest. The skin’s primary function is to shield the body from external challenges such as bacterial, chemical, and environmental. The skin can also produce bacteria-killing secretions as well as melanin, a natural chemical defense against the damage caused by ultraviolet light that can damage skin cells and protect the body from water loss.

Beneath the skin is a resilient cellular matrix called connective tissue that is made up of adipose fat cells, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and bone. Collagen, the most abundant protein in the human body, binds cells together and provides strength and elasticity, it affects our skin, our hair, our nails, our bones, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. Collagen levels decline considerably with aging, and collagen fibers become thinner and weaker. GOOD GENES OR GOOD COLLAGEN?

The body produces collagen all day; however, after the age of 20, our cells make increasingly less collagen on their own. And after the age of 30, the skin will lose 30% of the collagen it makes every ten years. Collagen and elastic fibers are located in the deeper layer of skin called the dermis. As people age, the multiple layers of the skin begin to get thinner and fibers are weakened or broken. When the connective tissues weaken, the skin loses its strength and flexibility, eventually causing both sagginess and wrinkles. And this also leaves the body with weakened defenses against damage from external toxins and solar radiation.

Wrinkles are a normal part of aging; they show up sooner on areas of the skin that are more frequently exposed to the sun without being adequately protected.
