I Am Zain FEATURE
The ARTIST to watch
JALISA REYES What’s something you learned early on in your career that made you a better artist?
If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
To be yourself. It’s easy to get lost in the facade of “faking it until you make it” and fairly tough to be yourself in this industry. If nothing else, I’ve learned how to disregard the pressure of trying to fit in to society and accept myself for who I am. Flaws and all, the only opinion that remains valid is my own.
The perception that comes with being an artist. The glitz and the glam isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Some of the richest people on this planet are miserable. I don’t think people understand the hard work and dedication that is put into being a true artist.
What’s a subject you’ve always wanted to write a song/sing about? I’ve always wanted to write about the inequalities between women and men. Particularly, the double standard, and how woman are treated differently from men. When it comes to sex and money, woman are treated unfairly and harsh. If I would write a song it would be an anthem to change the mindset of closed minded people. If you could cover any song what would it be and why? Even if it’s just in a karaoke session. Twenty Eight by The Weeknd. I chose this song simply because I can relate entirely, not just because I’m a Weeknd fan. The song also has high notes that I would love to try to hit, and I’m all about testing yourself and pushing your boundaries.

What project are you working on now? I’m currently working on a 3-part EP that I am hoping to drop within this year. It’s top secret but I can tell you a few details. It is based on the phases of change which are precontemplation, contemplation, determination, action, and maintenance. The EP will also have a visual concept to go against the music demonstration these phases. Do you encourage natural beauty? Entirely. With me being a tomboy, I’m never wearing makeup and my hair is usually in a bun, and even then I still feel beautiful. Beauty isn’t about the clothes on your back or what brand is smacked on your face, but rather what qualities your personality acquires. INTERVIEW BY: PHILLIP DIAS JR.
