LOST IN THE EAST WITH

You write all of your own music; where do you draw inspiration from when you write songs and what’s your favorite part about the proccess?

I

draw inspiration from everything around me in this city. Late nights are especially beautiful to me. The people you meet, the things you see or end up being a part of, and the random places you end up. Sometimes I look around and I feel like I’m in a movie, so I write about those times. That’s my favorite part about my creative process, like being a journalist in the middle of these crazy situations and being in a position to tell the world about it and how it affects me in the most vivid way possible. This city is massive with people from everywhere in the world which makes it a beautiful melting pot of possibility.

HENNY HENDRIX

It’s common for musicians to be out of work for long periods of time. How can you supplement this time without work? I model for a couple different up and coming clothing lines such as Canal Street Counterfeit, a dope street brand for shirts and caps. I did a couple short videos and photo shoots with them which kept me busy as we were finishing up the new album, Lucid Static. I also did some work with designer Mark

Cordell, where I walked in a fashion show for his line last Brooklyn Fashion Week. Between that, I bartend throughout the city. It keeps me tied to the nights that my music is about. Some crazy stories have come from those nights. Tell us about your future projects or current album you’re working on? Currently we’re working on this campaign called Lost In The East which is what I like to call an experience. With shows,

I Am Zain FEATURE new music, Photos, and other visuals. This project is just a form of expression of my summer and the life I’m living right now. Everything is just so clear and vivid and beautiful at a time when I feel like I’m hitting my creative stride. I’m lucky enough to still be working with Disparition and Dan Harpaz whom I created Lucid Static with and do live shows with. They sonically create the atmosphere that I get to create my stories in. Like they create the canvas, the experiences are the paint, and the final painting is the song people immerse themselves in. What is the message you want people get from your songs. Is there any particular track that you can use as an example? If you could go open up for any artist on tour right now who would it be. Why? I want people to get an experience out if. Most art is escapism, so I want to take people into our world, our scenes, our realities. I just had a show last night which was extremely intimate and moody. I believe those that were there got a vibing feeling of being out of their lives and into mine for a moment. Especially when we debuted our new song, I’m Around, at the end of our last show. People’s eyes were closed as they listened to the place we put them in, completely Lost In The East. If I could tour with anyone, I would love to tour with James Blake if I could. Sonically, he’s a vibes and moods style artist and I feel I could

“Most art is escapism, so I want to take people into our world, our scenes, our realities.” learn a lot from him. I’m trying to just learn as much as I can about and from music. How would you describe and rate the music scene of the city you are currently living in and how important is it in terms of what you’re actually writing about? There are many different sects within New York City’s underground scene. It ranges from Hip Hop, to Punk, to Indie Rock, to Jazz and Blues, House and electronic DJs, Raggae absolutely everything. The only real issue is that they don’t crossover too often, and when they do there’s typically a lot of judgement. I’ve been lucky enough

to move throughout most if not all of those circles as an artist and as a fan of music in general. But I’ve learned most aren’t as open minded which can be demoralizing for someone like me who wants to blend genres and create new ones. But New York adapts and adopts movements quickly if you can get enough of the city behind you. So I stay open to everything and use these different influences objectively as I write. What skills/personal attributes are most important to being successful? Success is completely relative, for me personally I just want to create

something new and different for people to invest their hearts, minds, and souls in. But in order to do anything to a level of being respected, one must extensively give themselves to their creation. I live the music we create, the stories I tell, the vibes you’ll find yourself in when you listen. It takes ambition, you have to live, eat, and sleep this passion to be great and have longevity. Another extremely important part of it is vision. Like being able to really strategically plan things and see how you will be portrayed as each step leads to another. By the end of a stretch of certain releases, events, visuals, etc. and they’ve all built up to this climax of a project or conclusive event, people will feel like they’ve been on an experience with you.
