was born in colombia and my family came to this country to have a better life and for me to chase my dream of doing something with my art. I have always loved drawing creatures and anything that came to my imagination. I love anything SciFi and Fantasy, specifically the creatures and characters. I tend to have a mix between realistic and comic book style. my mediums of choice are pencil, oils and sometimes a mix between copic markers and watercolor. my goal for when I get out of school is to work in the film and video game industry doing pre-production art. I would also love to be a Fantasy illustrator for book covers and eventually teach art. For Bookings contact: gomez5sebas@gmail.com

I Am Zain STYLE

CHRIS ENRIQUEZ INTERVIEW BY: PHILLIP DIAS JR.

How have you seen the barber business change over the years?

I have seen the barber business change tremendously over the years in my perspective. As a kid my father always cut my brother’s hair and mine. I started going to the barbershop when I was in middle school. The hairstyles and technique change every year. Especially with social media like Instagram to showcase some great haircuts.

What was your childhood ambition?

My childhood ambition was to be a professional athlete. Growing up I always looked up to sport Heroes.

What’s the most significant project you’ve been involved with in your career?

The most significant project I have been involved with in my career was graduating cosmetology school and getting my cosmetology license. Not a lot of barbers you see cutting hair are licensed. I’m just grateful

11

I Am Zain STYLE and thankful I got to complete the 1200 hour course and be licensed in the state of New Jersey.

How did you get into this business?

Right before I graduated Capri Institute in Paramus, NJ, my classmate asked if I wanted to work at the barbershop he was working at because there was an open chair in a high volume barbershop. I went to checkout ‘CUTZ & STYLEZ Hair Gallery’ in Emerson, NJ, April 2013 and have been rocking out ever since!

What is one thing you hope to accomplish in your lifetime that you haven’t yet? I hope to accomplish opening my own barbershop. Barber Bookings Contact: (201) 483 6436 Instagram: @chr1dabarber Facebook: facebook.com/c.enriquez

I Am Zain ART

JENNIFER SANCHEZ INTERVIEW BY: PHILLIP DIAS JR.

How old where you when you hopes of transferring to Montclair State University. I do not have as started dancing?/ Why did much training as the other dancers you start dancing? Dance and I have a pretty funny history together. When I was about five years old I was enrolled in Dance World Academy in Passaic Park. One day I decided I wanted to wear my tap shoes; my mom kept telling me that those weren’t the correct shoes for the day but I insisted. She let me wear my tap shoes to class and of course I couldn’t rehearse because it was ballet day so they made me sit and watch the rehearsal.

When my mom came to pick me up I begged to never go back and I cried my little butt off and she told me I would not like this choice when I was older. She took me out of dance school and when I was in 8th grade I joined the Passaic High School Marching Band to become a part of the Color Guard, which involved dance. My freshman year (age 15) Kenneth Frisby taught me and opened up my eyes and soul to something that I now cherish so close to my heart. I only danced in the High School Color Guard program and then I realized I wanted to pursue a dance degree. I am currently a dance major at Bergen Community College with

do (year wise) but I am starting my intense training in September of 2014 with hopes of being just as good if not better than those who have been dancing since a young age.

What’s your ultimate dance dream?

My ultimate dance dream would be to inspire someone like the inspiration from those who have taught me. Of course, career wise my dream is to be a part of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater but there is something about being someone’s reason to not give up or being the reason— a part of what inspires them that is just so pure to me. That purity truly cannot be replaced by anything in my opinion and I think that if you’ve inspired at least one person then you’ve saved at least one life.

How do I know if I am overdoing it?

When I am not feeling anything while going through the choreography or movement that

usually lets me know that I am overdoing it, meaning I am over thinking. Something that dancers forget or lose throughout their years of training is the emotional aspect of why we fell in love with this art in the first place. Sometimes when I can’t get a move or do a turn I get upset and keep working on it over and over again until I realize that if I just play the music and just forget about “perfection,” art happens. I am able to do that move and sometimes, I do it a little differently than intended to and it opens up an entirely different side of me— which is why I tend to start my studio time off with improvisation so that I can just feel the music and relate to it.

What do you feel like are the top three things dancers

20

should focus on or include in their warm ups?

-cardio/abdominal workouts -Hip rotator stretches -Short Improvisation before rehearsing choreographed pieces.

For example, if I am working on a piece that has to do with a dark love, involves me running back and the music choice is instrumental, before I work on that piece I might listen to gravity by Sara Bareilles and improvise through a minute of that to find the emotion.

tell us more about the cadets color Guard.

This has to be the hardest question on here! only because it is something that is tough to explain with text but I will do my best to have you understand it. I got this description from our website

www.yea.org/cadets. “The cadets, a program of Youth education in the Arts, is one of the oldest and most honored continuously operating drum and bugle corps, with members from all over the country and world. The corps was founded in garfield, nJ as the Holy name cadets in 1934 and has won 25 national championships and 10 world championships. The cadets will travel over 15,000 miles this summer entertaining hundreds of thousands of drum corps fans throughout the nation.” If you have ever seen a marching band, that is a smaller version of what we do at cadets. We are what the nBA is to high school basketball teams if that makes any sense at all. We are elite, hardworking and humble as we dedicate our entire summer (mayAugust) to tour the country and put

I Am Zain ART on performances usually on a daily basis. We are 150 performers that range from the age of 14-22 and we rehearse about 13-16 hours a day in order to be at the level we are. If you’re interested in more just check out the website and our YouTube channel, “YouthEducation” for some amazing videos and better visual aids as to what we do all summer!

What’s your advice to all the young dancers?

DO NOT GIVE UP AND WHEN THEY SAY YOU CAN’T DO IT ANYWAY!

What is your favorite quote that motivates you?

“Breathe and Believe” is the first quote that motivates me because back in high school my instructors Chris Rusca and Meegan Apgar always told us to stop and take a second to breathe and believe in ourselves and in what we’re doing whenever we got frustrated. It helped get rid of the doubt and gave us confidence in ourselves. I know it’s only supposed to be one but this one is really important to me and it is a recent one that I thought of on my own which is, “Out of your head and into your heart,” which means exactly what it says: get out of your head and stop thinking so much, just do things from the heart especially as a performer. rowing up, we have all read about superheroes in comic books. In most comics, the superheroes display qualities of leadership, intelligence and strength. Even though in the comics superheroes have heightened senses, super powers and multimillion dollar alter egos, most the qualities they display are also present in many people. Leaders come in many shapes and sizes but the very first leaders we come in contact with are mother and father. Parents are there from beginning to end to guide you in life. Older brothers and sisters also tend to have a leadership role in one’s life. Outside of a family, we also have leaders in social settings. When hanging out with your main group of friends, there is that one friend who is a natural leader. Leadership skills aren’t the only qualities of a hero— intelligence is also one. We meet many wise and intelligent people throughout a lifetime. A grandparent is an example of someone with a lot of wisdom. A high school teacher or college professor is also an example of people with intelligence. Accompanied with this quality is the intuition to read between the lines; to understand what sometimes isn’t obvious or stated directly, or even decipher situations that aren’t black and white.

One of the most important qualities is strength! But you might ask yourself, “How does one’s strength compare to a superhero’s?” Physically, we would not even compare to Superman, but real life superheroes do possess a different type of strength. The strength they possess is willpower. The willpower to get back up after a downfall or a mistake. The willpower to make the hard choices that not everyone else can and the strength to bear the consequences of those choices and actions. Also, the strength to admit that even a ‘superhero’ makes mistakes. No one will ever be a comic book hero, but there are many real life super heroes already. I’ve seen single mothers who have three jobs just to support their children and still find time in their day to attend their child’s baseball game. I’ve seen many adults who after 30+ make a return to college to pursue a higher education. I’ve seen college professors change students’ lives and interests. I’ve seen friends stand up for the right choice even if it is the harder choice. But most importantly I’ve seen all these qualities not only in my friends and family but myself. I am my own superhero. Contributing Writer Carlos Florian
