TWIN GABLE INTERVIEW BY: PHILLIP DIAS JR.

left: Lider ; right: Ken Rose

“We want people who listen to our music to know that they are getting a complete package when they dive into our stuff; almost like a blanket they can just wrap up and get lost in.” 38

W

hat projects are you working on right now? Well we are just coming off the release of our first record, so in a way we are still riding the high off of that for a bit. However, very soon we will begin working on fine tuning songs we have already written for the new record. We are also shooting around the ideas of purchasing some new recording equipment and creating a new music video or two. We want people who listen to our music to know that they are getting a complete package when they dive into our stuff; almost like a blanket they can just wrap up and get lost in. So the new projects are without a doubt going to be a huge reflection of that philosophy and accordingly, something people can look forward to. How do you feel about the internet in the music business? We are quite alright with the internet being as big as it is in the music business. We both feel a sense of gratitude toward there being a way in which people from all over the country and the world have a means of discovering us. Needless to say, we do not take this powerful tool lightly. Everything we put up for people, from music to album titles to pictures, are looked at by us from every angle, making sure that it is a perfectly accurate interpretation of the messages and emotions we are trying to send to people. What are your musical icons/influences? Lider: Ken and I share a few influences but I think part of what makes our music so unique and w/o limitations is our eclectic tastes. Couple of influences of mine are Radiohead

I Am Zain FEATURE (In Rainbows) and The Smiths. Ken: Kendrick Lamar and The Mars Volta are by far my top two influential artists to me. We do have some artists that influence us both and influence our inspirations for creating. The album “And the Glass Handed Kites” by Mew is a big one for us. How each song flows so smoothly into the other is worth noting. Another influence to us both is the band As Tall as Lions, specifically their self titled album. Their simplistic yet extremely effective approach to music is a huge example of an approach we try to emulate to at least some degree. Who writes your songs as well as your main themes or topics for most of your songs? The writing process for us is almost always 50/50 in terms of creative ideas and effort that is poured into our songs. It usually begins with one of us having a complete “skeleton” of a song, which consists of the voice part, chords, and a basic outline of the different sections. Usually whichever one of us starts writing lyrics for a song will end writing lyrics for that song. Besides that, we exchange and share ideas frequently with each other after the skeleton of a song is completed. So for one song you could have the beginning bass-line written by Ken, in that same song the rest of the bass-line is written by Lider, drums parts written by both, a keyboard part that Lider came up with and a guitar solo written by Ken. Most of our songs, although stemming originally by one of us, is then changed and stretched and morphed into an outcome that we both evenly agree upon and like very much.

I Am Zain FEATURE I know you guys are called Twin Gable, what do you have in common to make you twins? That’s an interesting interpretation of our name. We never connected it in that way. We originally came up with that name for a much different meaning. But that is the beauty of a name. It can be taken by someone and interpreted in many different ways. We respect your interpretation of our name and will answer the question as you asked it. To be honest, we did not have too much in common when we first started. Twin Gable was created out of a jam session between the both of us and our friend Joe on

the drums. Making music from that point on, we realized the two of us were very compatible in the musical realm. We would finish each others sentences, musically speaking. If one could not think of where to go with a song or what instrument to add next, the other did. Besides that however, we had different tastes in music; different personalities, senses of humor and much more. Now that we work together so much, that has changed dramatically and there are only a few small differences between us both in and out of music. We did a complete 180 from where we started.

“Not Standing Straight is a hit song. What was the creative process behind that song? The creative process behind that song was a stressful one. Ken originally wrote that song due to a really bad feeling he had at a party. He took that feeling, wrote the original skeleton in one sitting then showed it to me. I explained how the music could work better with the feeling he was trying to present.

So Ken worked on it for weeks. It took about 3 hours of writing and re-writing to come up with the final chorus alone. After the final skeleton was made, recording began. Things like the reverb on the voice and the keyboards in the second verse were added to really give that dismal feel that the lyrics are trying to convey. It came out pretty complete in the end and we are super happy with the outcome.
