ANY ONE CANBE FIT? INTERVIEW BY: PHILLIP DIAS JR
M
y name is Charlie Lolak and I am highly knowledgeable in the areas of health, fitness and nutrition. I am a Queens college graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Exercise Science and I am an American College of Sports Medicine certified Health and Fitness Specialist. I provide personalized exercise prescriptions that are evidence-based practices by current scientific studies along with nutritional advice. Why do we exercise? Exercising is one of the best things for your body as there are many health benefits from fitness. Cardiovascular training such walking, running, swimming, dancing, and etc. reduce an individual’s risk for a heart attack. Resistance training such as weight training will improve body composition and lower risk of high blood pressure. When embarking on a fitness program, there are many mishaps that can occur which

Many people face the challenge of losing weight and few will successfully lose and maintain the loss afterwards. There are various reasons for this; mainly it
comes down to two things: quantity and quality of exercise. The quantity of exercise refers to the total amount of time that exercising is being performed. For example, this can be counted as hours per day or minutes per week. The American College of Sports

GET INVOLVED Medicine has a recommendation for cardio training of at least 3-5 days of a combination of moderate to vigorous intensity and duration of 20-60 minutes per day for health benefits. There are a variety of methods to monitor intensity, for instance watching heart rate is most commonly done.

The quality of exercise refers to if the exercise being done is purposeful for an individual’s goal. For example, if an individual is preparing for a marathon, then he or she should focus on muscular endurance type activities. Nearly everyone has faced the trouble trying to lose weight, but how
many has actually considered if the exercise being done is truly effective? When it comes to losing weight, simply, you must burn more calories than what you consume. Step into a gym and you’ll probably see an overweight individual doing

SELMA BECIROVIC INTERVIEW BY: PHILLIP DIAS JR
What are your goals as a model? How do you see yourself progress in this field? As exciting as this line of work is, there are also a lot of negatives like the height and weight requirements. My goal as a model is to break the standards that are within the modeling industry. I may appear tall but in the modeling world I am considered short at 5’7. So it would really be amazing to follow in the footsteps of super model Kate Moss (who is 5’8) and work in the industry as a professional model.
vision. As a model that just means we have to be able to adapt to whatever situation, whether it’s getting the opportunity to be creative and do your thing or taking direction and listening.
I see myself doing print work in this field as opposed to runway and I know obtaining work as a model without having an agency to back you is 10 times harder but that would be the route I would love to go.
Why do you feel it’s important to help out people within your community? I feel it’s important to help out my community because I know firsthand what’s missing having grown up here. I also love to dance and I know as a kid I always wished Garfield had a dance studio that taught hip-hop so I could take classes instead of heading out to other studios to learn. One goal is to eventually open up a dance studio in Garfield so that the kids here could have a place to express themselves, receive direction and support.
What do you know about the advertisement industry and photography? Typically, photographers love when they can just snap away and a model can deliver their vision with little direction from the photographer. But I also have dealt with photographers who have specific poses that they want done so they will spend more time directing in order to get their
What makes you stand out as a model? I am a person who respects and admires the vets in this industry, but lately I won’t follow their latest work. Only because when I model, I want it to be genuinely all me and what I feel at the moment and not a replica of Cara Delevinge’s shot in the latest Burberry advertisement. I know you might think modeling is all the same, but I

disagree. Each successful model possesses their own personality that shines through their work so that’s something I want to do. Do you feel as if Instagram is another way to get known as a model? In today’s day in age yes I do. Instagram is a platform models can utilize to gain awareness and if they’re any good, they can actually build a following that can gain them the attention they seek from agents and modeling agencies. Two models that I follow on Instagram who are bada** are Jasmine Sanders and Asia Dee and they have Instagram to thank for their current following. I mean artists, photographers, designers and producers do it— why can’t a model? What was it like starting off as a model? Starting off was like walking into an unknown room blindfolded and it still feels like that. Even though I have done work there will always be something to learn and new experiences. I just take everyday a step at a time. Email: sbecirovic29@gmail.com Twitter: @S_becirovic Instagram: @Sel_831

INTERVIEW BY: PHILLIP DIAS JR
Have you always been ultra-competitive? Yes, I have definitely always had a super competitive side. I’m the kind of guy that if you’re on the treadmill next to me, you better believe we are racing. My mentality is if you’re going to do something, why not try to be the best you can at it? What would you say your biggest strengths are, and what’s the thing you need to work on the most? I would like to think I’m pretty well rounded but I would have to say my biggest advantage in fights has always been on the ground with my Jiu Jitsu. Out of seven fights, I finished three by submission. I tend to be my biggest critic so I feel like I need to improve everywhere; if I lose that perspective on it, I feel as if I will fall behind everyone else.
34
I Am Zain Photography SEPTEMBER 2014 iamzainmagazine.com
What are your ultimate goals in MMA? The ultimate goal for anyone in this sport should be to make it to the UFC and become a champion. It’s my dream to make it to the big show and I really believe if I keep working hard eventually I will make it there. What would motivate you to get in the ring and fight a huge, tough guy? It’s a really scary idea when you really think about it. I mean getting in a cage with someone that wants to beat your face in is terrifying. I think anyone that isn’t scared walking in that cage doesn’t want to win badly enough. To me, being afraid of disappointing the people that came to support me and that believe in me is the scariest thing in the world and I think that’s what motivates me, knowing I have to win. How big a factor is reviewing your opponent’s fight tapes? For me it’s huge. I become somewhat obsessed with my opponents; I’ll watch their fights almost every night and visualize every scenario that could possibly happen from me winning to me getting knocked out. It’s just part of my process of getting ready for my fight. I have to be honest with myself and be afraid of my opponent because anything can happen when that cage door closes— realizing that helps push me to train harder.
