SPOTLIGHT: PHOTOGRAPHER

MARINO MAURICETTE INTERVIEW BY: PHILLIP DIAS JR.

Originally from Miami, I always had a passion for the creative arts. I studied music and was always interested in photography and cinematography. The whole concept of creating images that told stories appealed to me because I always heard, “a picture is worth a thousand words”. I purchased a camera and moved to my home state of New York and practice daily. I believe in being versatile and diverse which is why I specialize in different areas of photography. My favorite is currently long exposure, but I also do portraits, street, and event photography. My goal is to encourage, inspire, and create timeless pieces of art that will be appreciate by many. Editor’s Note

C

reating a digital magazine from start to finish was a certainly a challenge. Luckily I had a background in graphic designing to help ease the stress. Prior to the launch of the first magazine, It took me a month to collect data and find a style that worked well for the magazine. Day in and day out I worked on the magazine. I wanted to provide a platform for upcoming talent to showcase their skills to the world. I started locally and worked with very talented individuals in new Jersey. eventually the magazine gained international exposure in more than 10 countries and spread from the east coast in new Jersey to california . They needed exposure and I had the resources to make it possible. I’ve been to so many places around new Jersey and I am so grateful that I was able to capture the many memories created. This journey has not only changed my photography but it also altered my perspective on life. I’ve met models, singers, dancers, producers, actors, actresses, authors, hairstylists, makeup artists, and many more creatives. Their stories kept me motivated and I intend to help others stay motivated. The people who have contributed to the magazine have been more than helpful in the year long journey. I worked hard on this magazine, but I couldn’t have done it absolutely alone. In the beginning there were times when I thought I should just give up. Fortunately, I had people who believed in me enough to keep me motivated and to push through and break boundaries. The purpose for I Am Zain magazine is unity. The connections made here at I Am Zain are lifetime connections. In unity there is strength, in turn we can help each other succeed. I would like to thank the people following, liking, re-posting and supporting my magazine. You guys are amazing! I hope you enjoyed this as much as I have in creating it. my expectations are for people to pick up a camera and take pictures that speak to them or to just go out there and create. If you love to photograph people, places or things go out there and do it. That goes for anything you’re passionate about. no one will achieve your dreams for you. make an effort to turn your dreams into reality. enjoy! -Phillip “Zzain1” Dias Jr., Founder/ Editor/ Photographer of I am Zain Photography Magazine

SHORT STORY:

THE FIRST STAR L

eslie ran up to the cast list at the playhouse. She just knew that she had gotten the role of the Winter Snow Princess in this year’s holiday production. As described in the script, The Winter Snow Princess was the land’s most beautiful being, full of poise and possessed the voice of an angel. Leslie knew she had given a stunning audition and was the top pick for the part. As she stared down the list Leslie was disappointed to not see her name next to the Winter Snow Princess and even more disheartened to see her name at the bottom of the list as “The First Star.” “A role not even worthy of an actual name, but a number” , she thought. “First star?” Leslie spent hours recapping her entire audition. How could she not get the role? Was her voice not in pitch? Was her acting below par? Then she thought, “Maybe I’m not pretty enough. Maybe I’m not the most beautiful being.” She questioned her weight, her kinky hair, and the unsightly pimple she woke up with the morning of the auditions. She sat at home pitying herself,

planning to drop out of the play. After all, what is a First Star? Her attention was suddenly diverted by the vibration of an incoming phone call. An unstored number. The voice on the line said “Hey, This is George Haskal.” The name sounded familiar but Leslie could not make a connection.

Leslie silently shed another tear and said , “but, I’m not the Winter Snow Princess , I think you’ve contacted the wrong person”. He said “No, the First Star is the most important character and my favorite role, the one that I centered the piece around, did u not read the whole play?”

The man continued “I am the writer of the play ‘A Beautiful Christmas’.” That was it! That was the play that she had spent all day thinking about, the one at the playhouse, the one that made her heart sink to think she would not be starring in it .

Embarrassed Leslie thought about the fact that she had only read the character description and only studied The Snow Princess. “The First Star has the show stopping song in the play, she’s the center, the reason for joy and belief. She shines with an assurance that cannot be dimmed. She beams with greatness. No one can deny the power of her light and that is the ultimate beauty of the First Star.”

“I just wanted to call you to say that I was at your audition and was blown away by your performance. You were amazing. More importantly, you had a superstar personality that shined throughout the room. One that I could see not only through your performance but by the way you greeted the judges, the way you responded so modestly, the way you even spoke politely the crew member cleaning the stage. That’s why I had to make sure you were given the most important role.”

I Am Zain FITNESS

LIVE. LIFT. FIT What motivates you to keep going is what keeps your mind in check. A healthy body is a healthy mind.

M

y name is Victoria Devino, I am 22 years old and I am a Rutgers University college student. I am currently majoring in exercise science and I am in the process of becoming a certified personal trainer. For years, (like many teens) I didn’t know what I wanted to do or what future career would actually make me happy. However, I was always an active individual and participated in school sports such as field hockey, horse back riding, tennis, and running. I’ve been in races for charities such as run 10 feed 10 which is a 10k for hunger in the US as well as some color runs...and finally within these past few years I have slowly realized fitness and helping others is what truly makes me happy. I was so excited once I knew exactly what I wanted to do! Within this last year I also started weight training along with my weekly cardio and began to build some muscle tone. I had a vision of exactly how I wanted to look and have been working my but off aiming for it. I have came a long way since about two years ago but everything is a journey and we all have to start somewhere! Now, I feel so healthy and good about myself that continuing my career and helping others feel this way is going to be nothing other than amazing! Everybody wants to cave and eat a donut sometimes! It was a matter of strenuous dedication and effort which took me places! I look back at my old self and I not only look better...but I feel better. That

is what is truly important. I feel like a strong woman who can accomplish anything I put my mind to. In my opinion, that is one of the best things a person can feel. Strength...which isn’t necessarily how much weight you can bench...it’s what you can put your mind to...it’s what you can strive for....it’s how much you can keep going without stopping. I Am Zain INTERVIEW

WHO WANTS

TO KNOW? “A closed mouth doesn’t get fed.” Anonymous

Cathy Hamilton, New Jersey Where do you find time to do what you do? I have a lot of time to be productive because I don’t go out all the time. I usually would be playing video games or writing short stories. So creating the magazine was a fun project and I am grateful that I got the chance to share that experience with others. Time management is also a major factor as well. I wasn’t use to giving myself a schedule let alone setting schedules for others. It took me a few months to balance school, work, and the magazine. How do you chose your themes? What I do to figure out a theme is write down random ideas and draw them from a bowl. The theme could be sport, fitness, fantasy, and etc. Once I pick a theme I attempt to add my cinematic style to it. There is a few times when I planned for a theme like October for example. I figured people would want to see a dark issue. I always to do horror movies so it was perfect for me. I was able to let my creative juices flow heavy in that issue.

54

What are you dreams for the magazine? My dreams for the magazine is to motivated others to encourage natural beauty. Who decides what is beauty or not. To many magazines take photo-shop way to far. Most of the people don’t look like in real life. The part that makes me upset is that some of the audience tries to mimic what they see in the magazine. I want people to accept who they are because true beauty is skin deep. Desirée Alessandra, New Jersey Will you give lessons to beginners? I do plan to give lessons for beginners in 2015. I went to school to be a photographer teacher. One of my goals is to teach people the basics of photography. The first session I ever taught was teaching a people about light. Light, and composition is a the key to a great photograph. What are your basic guidelines when photographing someone? Make sure you focus on the eyes. The eye are the first thing people are drawn to. Also don’t

you’re photographing people, so communicate with them to make them feel comfortable. There is nothing worse then a photographer just looking through a camera and not saying a single word except “Yea that’s it” or “okay you can change that.” Rebecca Judith, New Jersey What type of camera you use? The camera that I use is Canon. My current camera is the 6D. The camera doesn’t make the photographer, but in fact it helps bring the photographers vision to life. Where do you get your equipment? I get my equipment from numerous places. I like to shop around mainly because camera equipment is expensive. My goal is to search for the best deals. So to answer the question, I get it online. Being a photographer is an investment.
