SPOTLIGHT: PHOTOGRAPHER

Adonnica m. INTERVIEW BY: PHILLIP DIAS JR. My name is Adonnica Moore aka Notez. I’m a local photographer from the city of Detroit, MI. I started working with cameras at the age of three and stuck too my vision ever since. I started off in the broadcasting/film industry and gradually transitioned to Photography (full-time). I am currently a photographer for the fashion and music industries; and travel quite often for business. I started off shooting with a Nikon D3200 in 2013 and in the past 6 months I transitioned to Canon; the 5D Series (Which I don’t regret). Photography is a lifestyle, career, and I love what I do and don’t plan on giving up on it ever. 2015 brought me great blessings and I look forward to the abundance of blessings that I will receive in 2016. FIRE HEART

Writer: HaYley Virgil

T

he sun catches in the broken strands of her hair, made molten in its glare. She glides over concrete, her strides long and purposeful through the drab grey of business suits. Her heels snap sharply against the street; for a fleeting moment I fear it may be possible for the earth to shatter beneath a pair of discount stilettos. Yet the soft curves of her legs bend so gently as she stops at the cross walk in front of a Victoria Secret. White rivulets, like streams of new-fallen rain trail down her thighs, accented by the soft pockmarks of many years passed. Much like a worn machine whose engine fills the room with its tireless cry, she stands, unbreakable and unmoving against the tide of rush hour. Glassy-eyed models stare out at her from their photographs. Plastic and pretty, their hip bones jut out from perfectly air brushed skin. Their puffy pink lips are slightly parted, as though whispering a secret to the women on the street. Some seem to hear them, staring intently upon the snapshots, as though entranced by the artificially manufactured twinkle in their eyes. The women walking the street draw into themselves. Arms folded, shoulders hunched, they shy from the models’ perfection; all except the molten haired girl, whose flaming heart glows in absent minded defiance. Unfazed, the models’ inaudible words fall deaf upon her ears, as the light changes and she fades into the crowd. As her image falls to mere glimpses between the bodies, I can’t turn my eyes from the strut that threatens to set the city aflame.

MODEL oF THeYEAR

I

first got into modeling about two years ago. A local photographer from my hometown found me on Facebook and contacted me to see if I was interested in modeling for her handmade line of body chains and other wonderful jewelry. I really enjoyed the way it felt being in front of a camera and trying out different poses and facial expressions. each shoot was a new opportunity to push the creative envelope, to produce a more intense and incredible set of photographs each time I stepped in front of the camera. I never dreamed that it would lead me to where I am today.

What are your hobbies?

I am a firm believer that it is better to be decently good at many things, instead of perfecting one skill, therefore my list of hobbies is rather long. I am very fond of the visual arts: drawing, painting, teaching myself to tattoo, cross stitching, and photography consume a majority of my time. I also thoroughly enjoy getting tattooed, fishing, bow hunting, working on racecars, going to races, playing with my cats & dogs, reading, cooking, watching my favorite shows on netflix, and spending time with my friends/ family. coloring hair and doing makeup are also on my never-ending list.

“When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.” - Ansel Adams I always ask the question – do you think modeling is a luxury?

To me, modeling is a combination of luxury, dedication, and determination. many people think it’s just standing in front of a camera and smiling, but in reality it is so much more than that. To achieve the “luxurious lifestyle” that comes with being a model you have to be willing to push yourself, and put in the hours to actually get the shoot done. It’s learning to accept that not every shot is going to come out perfect the first time, there will be many times where you stand in the same position over and over until it comes out just right. You have to be prepared for people who may not necessarily like your photos, and being polite and thanking the ones who do enjoy them. modeling isn’t just for boosting pride in ourselves, it’s about making people feel something when they view your photos.

How do you balance your work and non-work life? Is it easy to balance? Is traveling part of that?

my non-work life is my work life in a sense. my job for the past year has

been staying at home and caring for my 89 year old great Aunt who has dementia. I feel better about doing this than going out to work for any company. It pays me morally, and has taught me more than any job. Helping her has shaped me to love and care for others in a completely different way than I have ever known. money will always be there for me to make when I need to, but she will not be. I am very much content with spending as much time as I can with her, for the time that I have left with her. I get time to myself to practice my tattooing skills, so one day I can achieve my biggest dream of inking professionally.

the makeup I spent so much time putting on started dripping straight down my face! I ran halfway down the beach to find a bathroom that had a mirror to try and fix it, but it was so bad I had to wash it all off. Then the blue dye in my hair leaked all over my skin while in the ocean, and stained my skin for a whole week!

So how about a favorite or memorable shoot or a horror story?

I’ll never forget the shoot on the beach. It was a memorable horror story. I spent all morning putting on my makeup, making sure it was flawless. When we arrived at the beach, things went downhill. no matter where I looked, my eyes watered! The wind coming off of the waves forced sand into my eyes. If I turned my back to the water, the sun shone down so intensely that it practically blinded me. All of

In what ways do you encourage natural beauty? I try and tell everyone I meet, to love yourself for everything you are. Embrace every part of yourself. Your strengths. Your flaws. Each of us has a unique outer beauty, but what’s truly important is the inner beauty that lies within our skin. Your outer beauty can turn heads, but the beauty within your heart is what will forever leave a mark on people and the world. Look in the mirror and smile at yourself because you are truly a gem. There is no one else in this whole world that is like you. Accept your beauty, from the outside in, and run with it to the ends of the earth.
