ENCOURAGING NATURAL BEAUTY FROM THE WEST COAST I have spent the last fifteen years with film and photography as both a hobby and a career. I have been a post-production supervisor in an editing house, a stunt double on a TV show, a paid stage actor, a published model, and a professional videographer and photographer. The lens can be a portal into the soul, revealing insecurities and doubts just as easily as dreams and desires. There is an intimate sense of trust that people give to their photographers, stemming from the vulnerability that most experience when looking into a camera. every shoot is an opportunity to create an honest and true connection with another soul that not only results in amazing photographs but also life-long friendships. As a visual storyteller there is no greater passion or reward than being able to witness, capture, and share in the experiences of another person’s life. MIXING IT UP WITH
DJ Al_P
When did you start DJing - and what or who were your early passions and influences? I was 12 when the idea of being a DJ hit me! Since I was kid, I don’t remember ever hearing any song (literally ANY song lol) and not liking it! All my life, my dad would blast salsa music in the house and in the car, my brother introduced me to hip hop in his room, my uncle was all about pop & house music, & my friends growing up put me on the different genres of music of their own cultures...and
I loved it all! I remember I was at my grandma’s house with my dad, and he noticed that I would enjoy literally every song that came out of the stereo. English or Spanish. He came up to me & said, “Papi! You should be a DJ!” I’m all confused like what? What do you mean? And he goes “Yeah papi. DJ’s make good money, and they get a lot of girls too!” I was BEYOND excited to go home that night and tell my mom about this new dream of mine. I told her word-for-word what my dad told me, she smacks me across
the head, and tell me “you ain’t gonna be no DJ. You’re going to school and that’s that!” Regardless of what mom said, I got a job at a restaurant at 13 to save up money for my first equipment. I finally got my stuff, & officially began the DJing craft at 14. And that’s how the dream began. What do you personally consider to be the incisive moments in your artistic career? Well this a pretty interesting story. Well my dream has always been

I Am Zain FEATURE to be on radio in New York City. I was 18 when I was in community college studying a major that had NOTHING to do with any of my musical dreams. I knew I needed to find a way to get myself on path towards New York City radio. At the time, I was DJing a few times a month at an upscale club in West Orange, NJ called 4Sixty6 when I met this really dope MC, AJ El Kallejero from La Mega 97.9FM. He heard me spin for the first time while he was on the mic and was impressed! I took advantage of the situation, introduced myself to him and told him straight up, “Dude, I know you don’t know me from a hole in the wall, but if you put me under your wing, you’ll see that no one will want it more than I do!” We exchanged numbers and he told me to call him in the afternoon the next day. I ended up catching a stomach virus, so I had no choice but to call him while I was in the bathroom “handling business”. That was the beginning of beginnings for my radio career. What makes you decide to play a particular record during one of your sets? Is there a criteria other than pure subjectivity, for selecting what to play at a gig? Well I’m always looking at as many people individually so that I can be able to judge them musically. You need to be able to look at someone and just know that certain records and genres will get them going. It’s super weird, but super cool at the same time.

I Am Zain FEATURE Do you believe in the possibility of “reading an audience” – and how do you put it into practice? Going back to my last answer, to “read an audience” is to judge them musically. You learn more & more from party to party about how to take control of certain crowds if you really observe and take notes. I still do that with many DJs who are doing there thing to this day. How would you describe your first radio gig? I was 14 years old DJing a 12-person babyshower in my hometown Paterson. That’s it. Lol How do you reach out to the community? Paterson has been absolutely terrible lately and it truly saddens me. Tears literally came down my eyes when I found out about a 15 year old kid from my old hood got shot & killed in a drive-by. I grew up in the same environment as most of these kids who are really going through it. Through radio, I want to be able to inspire the youth from everywhere, especially my city, into going after what makes THEM happy. That’s been the goal since I was 14. Anddddd, I also work with the Paterson Police Athletic League’s Jr. Police Academy where we help instill discipline and character into kids with problems in the Paterson streets and homes.

SUPERSTAR RISING
MARK BORINO SINGER SONGWRITER PRODUCER
He’s worked with Feli Fame, been compared to Jon B. and scooped a best newcomer nod at the SOB’s. Meet our new #MCM Do you like to do collaborations? To be honest, I haven’t done too many features. I’m picky when it comes to who I do a feature with as well. So to answer the question, I enjoy collaborating with other artist but the song has to be right. I won’t just hop on any track. Who was your inspiration? My inspiration’s are Drake, Chris Brown, 112, Jodeci, Luther Vandross, Donny Hathaway and Michael Jackson. How long have you been in the music game and how did you get started in the first place? I got into the music game late. I started making beats at 18 years old. Around 19 is when I started practicing writing and singing and I would say when I turned 20 I definitely decided that I wanted to pursue music and I’m 22 now. Which artists are you currently listening to? And is there anyone of these that you’d like to collaborate with? The main artist I listen to are Drake,
Chris Brown and Trey Songz. Ofcourse if I got the opportunity I would love to collaborate with Drake. He’s currently my favorite artist. The huge fan of the whole OVO movement. On which of your songs do you think you delivered your personal best performance so far, from an emotional and technical point of view? Although its not my favorite song off my new EP ’92 (MCMXCII), I would have to say “Winter Blues” showcases my vocals. I really challenged myself the most with that song. Im really singing outside of my normal range throughout the whole thing. Which aspect of being an independent artist and the music making process excites you most and which aspect discourages you most? When it comes to being an independent artist and making the music myself, I like the fact that I’m control of whats going on and how the songs turn out. I enjoy
creating by myself but at the same time, it can become overwhelming. Sometimes I have to step back from it all. Tell us something about your songwriting process. What usually comes first the lyrics or the beats? And do you prefer the piano or the guitar when writing? When Im about to write a song, I have to have a instrumental to vibe out too. I need to get some type of feeling to move forward with the writing. Ill loop the beat over in Logic (which is the music program I use) and begin to sing random melodies until I find one that I like, then start to piece together words.
