I started filming The Sims 2 with the games in-game camera in 2006. I taught myself how to film, direct and edit my work. About two years ago, I was finally able to produce a video with live actors, and it was the best experience I’ve ever learned to love. I’ve produced a small amount of videos since then. Now in 2014, as an official Film student, I want to start working more with writers who want bring their stories to life, and I also want to work with actors who want to build up their resumes. Becoming a ‘Director’ is a hard field to get into, but I’m determined to work hard and also take great pride in the work I plan to do.

I

would like to start off by saying how thankful I am to my family and boyfriend. Without them I wouldn’t be an aspiring Film/ TV Director studying at Montclair State University for Filmmaking. In the last few years I’ve been working independently on producing various types of videos for YouTube.

MARC AMITRANO INTERVIEW BY: PHILLIP DIAS JR.

M

y name is Marc A. Amitrano. I am 24 years old and I’ve been a musician since I was eight. I was born and raised in Lodi, New Jersey, where I learned to play saxophone in the third grade. Since then I have played in every school band function such as Concert Band to Jazz Band. In high school, I started to learn guitar and played in different styles of bands. Currently I have been playing an upright bass in a Psychobilly Band. It’s like if Elvis wrote fast songs with a horror movie theme. I love playing this style because no one else is. It’s a challenge since once again I have to teach myself how to play since the upright is a completely different style and no one else is playing the same style. I love seeing everyone’s reaction when I take the stage. It’s the best.

I Am Zain MUSIC

LISA “MAJIQ” INTERVIEW BY: PHILLIP DIAS JR.

What is your musical background? Do you have a musical family or did you just fall into songwriting all on your own?

I don’t play any instruments but both of my siblings do and so does my dad. I’m definitely the only writer/rapper in the house.

What sorts of things have you done to improve your songwriting since then? Any favorite books or previous mentors you’d like to talk about?

I write constantly and keep my self open to all kinds of music, movies and art. I’ve been writing as far back as I can remember. Basically, since I was old enough to read. It’s amazing that throughout my life a majority of my teachers and mentors have been so supportive of me and my talents, beyond what I can begin to thank them for. I even have a story that I wrote in kindergarten that my teacher had laminated for me. Reinforcement like that has kept me motivated and working hard at my crafts.

How have you gotten your songs out to the industry I Am Zain Photography MARCH 2014 iamzainmagazine.com

19

I Am Zain MUSIC who should hear them? Sounds like you’ve been pretty successful with this. Do you have any tips to offer other songwriters in this regard?

Networking. I’m reserved, but if you put me around the right people I’ll give you a great conversation. Being friendly and conversational has opened many doors for me and gotten me a lot of exposure and opportunities. I would tell other songwriters and any one else for that matter to just keep doing what they love and make sure to share their talents when the time is right. Use every opportunity to your advantage (without being annoying/ obnoxious).

Do you ever experience writer’s block? I imagine this would be particularly annoying if you were in a collaboration situation. If you do, what do you do to get over it? I never experience writer’s block when collaborating (knock on wood). I can literally listen to a track that I’m featured on or working with someone on and write some epic stuff in five to ten minutes. It’s when I’m working on my own material that I have the worst case of writer’s block. I went through a time where all I could write were sad love songs that I couldn’t really use for rap music.

20

I Am Zain Photography MARCH 2014 iamzainmagazine.com

I Am Zain MUSIC That’s how I got heavily involved in writing for singers. I just do a lot of journal writing and drawing when I experience writer’s block. Those eventually turn into multiple songs and concepts later down the road.

You’re currently doing some producing, isn’t that right? How easy was the transition from performer/songwriting to producer? What’s different about it from songwriting and what’s the same?

I do some engineering, just got my Bachelor’s in Media Production. I kind of do producing and performing simultaneously so the transition isn’t too drastic. I may engineer a show today and perform a show tomorrow so Majiq the engineer and Majiq the rapper never really get a break from each other. In engineering I like assisting on live shows rather than in the studio and I think I’m as nervous being behind that sound board as I am when I’m the person performing on stage. I have such a drive to make things perfect. I just have so much love for the arts that I just want to do it all. CONSTANTLY!

The reality of Relationships ALEX HAMMERLI

contributing Writer

R

elationships… Does it ever feel like it isn’t the right time, or it isn’t with the right person? When it comes to attempting relationships, life in the early 20’s seems a lot like a tV show romance; seeing the pretty girl or handsome guy with the beautiful smile and great fashion sense and just being mesmerized. In the show, numbers are exchanged, dates ensue and it all works out, but real life doesn’t seem to work that way does it? Some are fortunate enough to get the magic number, but then there are all these things that flood an individual’s mind such as, “Should I text him/her? He/she did give me their number so I guess they want me to talk to them, but then again their tweets clearly show interest in someone else, I think.” you have to be smart when texting your love interest because you don’t want to be stuck in that “friend zone” situation. Let us be honest for a second— when a girl and guy meet, immediate thoughts are, “either I would sleep with this

24

person, be in a relationship, I find this person unattractive, or cool to hang out with.” The thing about this is you can’t wait for the right time, even if you think you have to because you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. I’m currently in a similar situation, met the girl in class, we both missed the bus and she decided to talk to me and we had a conversation and it was cool. I got her number, twitter and other social media, but I still haven’t texted her because I see the tweets that she is interested in someone, but you know living in new Jersey, it’s kind of easy to try to change someone’s mind.

I haven’t decided what I’m going to do yet, because I do think this could be a serious long term relationship if I had the chance so I do not want to ruin it, but now I would like to talk to you about some of my past relationships. I won’t put any names but I will say how we met, how I made them fall in “love” and everything. I met this girl on the first day of the fall semester 2013. She was beautiful; she sat next to me she smiled when I looked at her. In all movies, that’s the sign to try to talk to her, so I did talk to her, pro tip have a conversation it isn’t all about sex. I asked her where she from, what she wants to do. I learned she just moved here and

I Am Zain Photography MARCH 2014 IAmZAInmAgAZIne.com

I Am Zain THE ART OF LOVE didn’t know any cool spots, so I said let me take you out on Saturday afternoon. I picked her up and I took her to this beautiful restaurant, then I took her back to my gated community, and I wowed her with my lifestyle, the private beach, the pools, the private boardwalk, obviously she was already sold on me since she let me take her to my place but the lifestyle sold her more. Yes what you are thinking did happen, but that isn’t the point,

I did end up going out with her for a bit, but it ended because I didn’t get to know her that well on a personality level that it couldn’t work long term. Yes a girl could be so beautiful, but you need to know their personality to see if it could work, you aren’t in high school anymore— looks can’t be 90% of the relationship. You need to click with that person. So what I’m saying that go for the girl you think has a beautiful smile you see on

the train that is looking at you, but don’t come off super creepy. You know if you have social skills or not if you are reading this. Always go for it, or try to wait for destiny to play its part, but sometimes you need to alter destiny’s hand.

I Am Zain THE ART OF LOVE A Monday Morning As quite as a storm brews before devastation, He feels his heart drumming through his neck as he clutches the pen with his sweaty palms. Calmly as possible he wrote, “I love you,” on a blank sheet he tore from his notebook. Everything now is a mystery, all these fond emotions have mature like words in the book of Psalms. He’s free, he’s free angels of God stole his soul like a Crook. Nothing was more peculiar arousing a war between demons, trapped in hell. A fight till the end, a fight for indication of consciousness. Because being trapped within can cause a charcoal character, I do tell. It was me; it was f####g me, Deciding if my presence would be missed I gazed at the unfinished letter from my heart for you, mom. Words couldn’t portray a more vivid picture “So I gently, placed the pen on the counter-top and reached for the hand gun you see mom.” Loneliness can leave an unfulfilling texture. To an artist with rapid eye movement Affection on a Monday morning is an improvement. -Kyran Guerra

A Sonnet to Raymond

The tears that filled his eyes made me believe him with my adolescent heart. Minutes turn to hours, days passed even months. You were never there, you never cared. I’m 22, how did we grow apart. Your presence was a present under the tree, The hatred and pain I felt, grew numb to the pain killers I’ve popped. I’m older now, I’ve suppress my emotions under the rug, like dead leaves falling from an old Christmas tree. So tell me, all the missed birthdays, and all the missed show days, why hasn’t it stopped. I’m here, both eyes so you see where I stand Fishing through my thoughts; fishing with no rod; fishing for a dad. Wishing to the well, I hold enough coins in my hand. What happens...when your superhero dies, dad. What happens… Tell me What happens. -Kyran Guerra

Friendship or Friend Zone? DARIA SZEP

contributing Writer

C

an men and women truly be friends? This debate has been going on for a long time. For this article I asked my Facebook friends to give me their opinion. men and women both had a lot to say but the yes and no ratio really seemed equal. It seemed that in a lot of these relationships things were uneven. one person had feelings more than friendship for the other. Then it becomes a question of whether that person really is a friend or just waiting and hoping to become more than a friend? Some people said they had feelings but accepted the fact they were not returned and chose to stick around for a friendship. Very rarely it happens where two people decide they don’t “click” romantically and they mutually decide upon friendship. Have you ever noticed a person will talk about a date they went on and say, “yea, I’m in the friend zone,” then other times you’ll hear, “It didn’t work out but we’re still friends.” I think it comes down to chemistry. The rules of attraction don’t discriminate. In the age of

28

technology where Facebook, twitter, Instagram, Skype and Facetime are our main methods of communication, we forget that genuine face to face interaction is very important. nothing takes the place of chemistry, and you won’t know if it exists until you’re standing next to the person. There’s an online dating site for every type of person these days: christian mingle, Farmers only, Punk match, our time. I think it’s a great way to meet people but don’t forget there has to be chemistry. All of those common interests mean absolutely nothing if you meet and there’s no chemistry. In my opinion you should set up a casual date at a diner or a coffee shop before you invest too much time. go to a place that you can sit and talk face to face. At that point you decide, is it friend zone, friendship, or chemistry and you hope the other person feels the same.

zone” or a true friendship. chemistry on the other hand, cannot be controlled. So, don’t take it personally and as always, respect each other. Love & Lace Up Xo Daria Thank you to Anthony Raymond Breese for his help with the research that went into this article. “I recognized you instantly. All of our lives flashed through my mind in a split second. I felt a pull so strongly towards you that I almost couldn’t stop it.” ~ J. Sterling email me of you have an idea for next months topic:

AskDaria19XX@gmail.com

I think the person who feels the chemistry and finds it unreturned usually says “friend zone” to describe the meeting, and the other person probably says, “We can be friends.” I feel that friendship, like love, is a choice and a commitment. When it comes to male/female friendships it is up to you whether you see it as being in the “friend
