DUSTIN McCLURE InTeRVIeW BY: PHILLIP DIAS JR.

my name is Dustin mcclure, I am an traveling fashion photographer that lives in Albuquerque, new mexico but I frequently visit Phoenix and LA. I picked up my first digital camera in 2012 to capture images of my 4 kids and other family members. Although I still work with families and children I found I much prefer to work with models at my own pace. After making new connections with local makeup and hair artists, models and a fashion photographer my passion for fashion and stunning magazine editorials continued to grow. I have a big family and run 3 businesses so you will sometimes find me doing late night and weekend shoots as well as waking up at 3 am to work on images. most of the time it doesn’t feel like work though as I love what I do. You can view my work and find out more about me at www.dustinmcclurephotography.com

URSULA IN THE MAKING When I met Kwamë in person we talked about every horror movie that made the 90’s iconic, such as movies like Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street, and more. He is the ‘New Age’ horror writer. INTERVIEW BY: PHILLIP “ZAIN” DIAS JR. What inspired you to become a Writer/Director? I would definitely say the films I witnessed as a kid. I was fascinated by the choices actors were making in larger than life stories. Film showed me the world- both simple and exaggerated. I only knew a tiny gram of the world by growing up in Columbus, Ohio and I was eager to know what else was out there. Reading definitely was and is a great pastime for me. Currently, I feel that there is a blank space for actors and artists of color. The scripts that get made are “expected”. I want to be apart of a new wavefilm that stands out and has style,

a message, and a pulse. It’s great to create what you want to see. What’s your writing routine and process? It’s the same to me with actingthe process differs depending on the project. You may not always keep the same routine. One thing I always like to do is figure out what Id like to title a script first. A title alone suggests so many things. Music is a mainstay for me as well. Mainly film scores. John Ottman and Christopher Young are amazing composers who are usually playing in the background when I’m sketching something out. For example, when I was writing the

stage play of “Ursula”, the “House of Wax” score just made sense to write to. The score was grim, atmospheric and somewhat whimsical, which are elements found in my story. How did you break into theater, and what advice do you have for others trying to do the same? I am a graduate of The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, where I was trained extensively in the Meisner method, as well as Feldenkrais, and many techniques that add to your performances in theater and also film. A lot of my fellow classmates, some graduates, were putting on shows and I got involved with them. It’s always

I Am Zain FEATURE good to keep yourself surrounded with talented peers, mainly since you can help one another with work and experience. Who and/or what are some of your key influences? I have many! My mother and father for one, because of their resilience and their huge hearts. I’m actually working on a film inspired by their initial introduction to one another. Wes Craven, also. He was my favorite director, God bless him. I’ll never forget begging to see “Scream 2” in the theater at a very young age and then screaming and crying after the prologue with Jada Pinkett Smith. His filmography is amazing and I loved his attention to detail and how he used his actors. Ty Hodges is a great influence to me because I feel he’s the next huge director of my generation.

Everything he does is both unusual and inspiring. And Aaliyah has always has a huge influence on me. Her music, her brief foray into film, her style and aesthetic all still continue to move me.

time wisely. As far as writing, I’m always brimming with ideas but I try to focus on what needs to be told in the current moment. “What would really shake people up and be fun to make the most?”

How do you manage your time between family, work, and what to write next? I always keep my family close. Living in New York can be very hectic and my way of dealing with it is talking with them and visiting home whenever I can. With work, even though it’s hard, I think it’s right to work as close as possible to the field you’d like to excel in. An environment with people who are also in the arts is an amazing place for a day job; whether that be in theaters, festivals or audition spaces. You have to keep your finger on the pulse and spend your

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned since you began writing? I’ve learned that writing puts you a step ahead, regardless. I’m an actor first. An actor’s life is mostly put into other people’s hands and you’re constantly waiting on someone to give you your next break. Once you’re creating your own work in addition to that, very rarely will you be creatively unfulfilled- assuming that you’re good at it. I’ve also learned how to be more attentive, because you never know where inspiration can come from.
