CHASING DREAMS WITH

JoE PEARSoN

“Like any other story in a book with words or a visual story, this story is with sound.” When and how did you first become interested in music?

Well, as a kid I enjoyed Frank Sinatra. Around when I was ten, my mother gave me a Frank Sinatra CD for Christmas. My grandfather loves him and was very happy that he knew I got interested in his work. Frank Sinatra never wrote his own music, but made it work with always a big finish. I liked the song, “My Kind of Town” and “Chicago.” Probably because one of my best friends from fourth grade in elementary school used to live there. I used to listen to him on my CD player while riding my Razor scooter. That’s basically close to what my memories were listening to him. Then soon after, I started to get into classical music such as the mainstream greats: Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. Much later my classical music library increased dramatically. I found a compilation CD at Target called, “Beethoven’s Moonlight.” After that, music has been my life.

How long have you been playing music?

I started to play different instruments before the piano, actually. The third grade I was in the recorder group, if you call it that. We played Hot Cross Buns and Mary Had a Little Lamb— fun stuff. Fourth and fifth grade I sang in the choir and I tried trumpet in the fifth grade. My grandfather is a professional Jazz trumpet player and started to play when he was fourteen. So that’s why I tried it out. About sixth to seventh grade I played the guitar by ear. I played little riffs of different bands.

Finally eight grade came along and I started to play the piano/keyboard. Again I started from ear playing other people’s music such as little riffs of “Fur Elise” and some Christmas tunes. Soon I started to compose my own work before formal classical lessons in tenth grade.

What are your musical influences?

To start off, my biggest musical influence is Philip Glass. Not because his repetitive structure, but his chord progressions mostly and his rhythmic patterns. He is considered minimalistic, a 20th century American composer who is classical, experimental and modern with his compositions. He as a composer showed me that if other people do not like your compositions, it’s okay; still write music. I feel that if no one liked my music I would still compose because I love performing and writing music. Composing music comes with the package of Joe Pearson; as well with OCD but that’s a different story. Other musical influences are Animal Collective, Angelo Badalamenti, Anthony Green, Pink Floyd, Amy Winehouse, John Cage, Rachmaninoff and Chopin. Other influences are the clouds, my thoughts, trees and silence. Silence is musical even though there is no sound. You can work rhythms with some silence. It so simple it sounds complex.

Does anyone in your family play music?

My grandfather plays the trumpet. He has been trained in Jazz and also later in his musical career he picked up

I Am Zain Photography/ JANUARY 2014

5

classical music. He is not a big fan of classical music, but it is the foundation and roots of technique. So, my advice to anyone who would love to pick up an instrument— become classically trained before moving toward the genre of choice. I am classically trained and look where I stand today even though we still learn music till we die. Onward. My great uncle plays piano and composes music for film and TV. I’m not going to mention his name at this time, but soon enough I will. My cousin John used to play piano and his favorite tune to play was “Maple Leaf Rag” by Scott Joplin. He took up Bio-Chemistry instead; smart man. My other cousins Jake and Nick who are 13 and 17; Nick plays bass and Jake plays drums.

What kinds of times and places have you played music in your life?

When I attended Bergen County Community College in fall of 2009 that is when I first played a concert as a solo pianist in a public place. I was really nervous, but in an exciting way because I knew that I would come out of my shell, soon after playing a lot of shows. Two years later I became President of the music club and that lasted three semesters. This made me more involved with performing my own works at the school in different parts of the campus. JC Penney asked me to play keyboard during Christmas Eve; I work there too. I also played a few times in front of a flower shop in Montclair, NJ in the summer time. Other places such as coffee houses, art galleries, bars, open-mics are gigs I tend to perform. A cool one was for an annual lunch for NJ Jawbo.

Why did you write or decide to play that song Art Gallery or Chasing Dreams? The reason why I play “Art Gallery and “Chasing Dreams” more than other songs is because they are the most virtuosic pieces I wrote thus far. I’m in the process of other one similar to technique. Those pieces are ones that I only have about five to ten minutes to perform. If I have an hour set for example I can play slower pieces of music. “Art Gallery” and “Chasing Dreams” are very fast, full of power and emotion. “Art Gallery” was influenced on my experience submitting my painting to an art gallery at my school. About six months later, I started to compose this piece of my experience. “Chasing Dreams” speaks for itself.

6

I Am Zain Photography/ JANUARY 2014

My goal in life is to compose music for film, TV and simply to perform my pieces live and get paid for them. I wrote “Chasing Dreams” in 2011 and “Art Gallery” about 2010.

What do you think that song is about? Let’s go with talking about “Chasing Dreams” shall we?

This solo piano piece is telling a story. Like any other story in a book with words or a visual story, this story is with sound. The beginning motive (intro) is leaning into a big life experience. The first pull of the intro is very calm and flowery. It has a big bang of emotions that does not lead you on; very direct with emotion. Even though this piece is called Chasing Dreams I always picture a little fairy dancing on my piano keys; every time. I love mystical creatures such as pixies, but not into Final Fantasy type stuff. Not just hearing the music that comes from the piano of this tune, I enjoy playing this because it gets all of my energy I have out!

Why did you choose to play this kind of music?

I like the idea of classical music because of the technique it brings. I do not consider myself to be only classical, but I call it classically structured; if that makes sense. I use the studies and form of classical music, but put my own little twist to it. I also compose music with Jazz influence, Rock and Metal influences. I love hardcore music and Metal. Metal is actually very influenced by classical music. The use of harmonic minor scales are often used in metal. Minor keys are my favorite type of keys to compose for. Funny thing, I don’t call it me choosing the music I play. This is more of the feeling I get, the music just speaks for itself. I compose with a subconscious mind-set as well as when I paint my abstract/modern art. For Booking: rookie0316@aol.com Instagram: @Joebean24

THE SINGER

ADRIANKA Szabóová What other producers, songwriters and/or artists do you see as your primary inspirations?

There are many artists and producers that inspire me. They all vary in reasons and talents but they inspire all the same. I must say one of my greatest inspirations is Janis Joplin. That is a woman who can sing. She sings so amazingly, sharp and full of such feeling that I still sometimes tear up. Another would have to be Paloma Faith. She is an English singer songwriter. She has a very unique old time feel to her music but it just gets under your skin and stays there. And, she is a truly amazing person with all her charity work.

My favorite musical project to date would have to be my album. It’s been a few years in the making but it is coming along very nicely. We had to stop and change directions a couple of times, but I think we are on the right path now.

I Am Zain Photography/ JANUARY 2014

I say we because there have been many people who have helped on this project. Just to name a few: Krazy Figs, Spears, Vekz, David and others. They have been an absolute dream team. Always making sure I am comfortable with what I sing and making sure that it reflects my personality as a whole.

Is there an artist you want to work with that you have not yet had the opportunity to work with?

I would absolutely LOVE to work with Bruno Mars, Imagine Dragons, Aviici and Paloma Faith. Bruno Mars’ music is just so upbeat, happy and has the flavor that I am trying to get in my music. And he is just an absolutely amazing singer and performer. Imagine Dragons takes me back to where I started performing. I began at the Paul Green School of Rock. Many of you that have heard about it now, it was completely different when I was attending. We toured around and performed classic rock. Imagine Dragons takes me back there and those are memories and times I will never forget. I would absolutely love to work with them. Aviici is on my list because I am an absolute dance music junkie. I absolutely cannot get enough. Aviici is on top of his game and working with him would truly be a dream of mine. Finally, Paloma Faith, I would love to work with her because she inspires me so much in every way. From the way she dresses, to her music and everything in between. It would be an absolute honor and pleasure working with someone so talented.

What do you like to do for fun outside of working on music?

I am actually a Real Estate Agent and volunteer Fire Department/ EMS member. I work with my mother selling houses and renting apartments. I am also the one who will come get you at 3 in the morning if you fell or don’t feel well. I love my town and all the people in it. I love taking care of them and giving back to them for giving me an amazing childhood. Plus I am a Biology major. So this is something that I would also love to do. So I love what I am doing, music or medicine, and I would never change either for anything.

What made you want to become a music producer?

When I first got into music producing it was just something to do. I thought it was cool and fun and I didn’t necessary take it seriously. About three years ago I was going to school studying electrical engineering. At the time, I thought that was what I wanted to do but I didn’t have any passion for it. My first encounter with music production was when my boy Phil introduced me to a program called Fruity Loops. I’ll admit my beats in the beginning were terrible because I had no musical background. After that I decided to change my major and study music engineering instead. Through going to school and working on my projects, I eventually knew that this was what I wanted to do with my life. The love, excitement and joy that I get from making music are some things I haven’t felt for anything else. Once I begin to get people to notice my

14

I Am Zain Photography/ JANUARY 2014

work and tell me that I had talent I pretty much knew I wanted to make music for a living.

What other producers, songwriters and/or artists do you see as your primary inspirations?

Well as far as inspiration goes, I tend to draw from a very wide variety but my biggest inspiration would have to be Ryan Leslie. As far as versatility and skill set I don’t think there are any other producers on his level. The man plays almost every instrument and you can tell that he has so much passion for what he does and I love that. I remember when I first discovered Ryan Leslie. I was on YouTube just browsing for videos to watch when I came across the “Ryan Leslie makes Addiction” video. I instantly fell in love with the art of producing music once I watched this video. Up until that point I had never done anything music related in my life. It’s hard to explain but I knew from that point that music would be a part of my life in some way shape or form. Some of my other inspirations as far as producing goes are Timbaland, Pharrell and Swizz Beatz. They all have very unique sounds that can’t be duplicated and nothing is the same with their music they produce. If you look at all the artists that those guys have worked with, you would see that they helped shape many of those artist careers. Whether it be Pharell with the clips, Swizz with DMX or Timbaland with Justin Timberlake. As a music producer I want to be part of the reason that an artist becomes successful and not just someone who made the

beat. My favorite artist/songwriter would be Ne-Yo. I think that guy extremely talented. To be able to start from the bottom as just a songwriter and eventually write a number one hit for Beyonce and then blow up and become one of the biggest artists out right now is amazing and very hard to do. I remember watching a clip of Ne-Yo and his group back in the day performing at the Apollo. Believe it or not they got “booed” of off the stage. That just shows that if you work hard and keep believing in yourself, you can make things happen. I said before I grab inspiration from almost every decade and genre. Some of my all time favorites are Stevie Wonder, Prince and Michael Jackson. Their music is timeless and will last forever. Stevie Wonder is just one of the greatest on the piano and

16

his music touches you deep inside. Prince has to be one of the best live performers I’ve ever seen in my life. The amount of energy and emotion he gives when he performs is insane. I don’t think there is anyone in the world who hasn’t heard of Michael Jackson. He’s known worldwide and everyone loves his music. I remember when I use to live in Egypt the people use to ask me if I know about Michael Jackson. We didn’t have much in common but we all knew who Michael was. I don’t think there will ever be an artist bigger than Michael Jackson.

Do you have a favorite musical project that you’ve worked on?

My favorite project is actually one that I am working on now. I’m cur-

I Am Zain Photography/ JANUARY 2014

rently working on my first mix tape which I plan to release sometime in 2014. This project will be special because it will let people really get to know me and see who I am as a person. People tend to think I’m quiet and shy so they’ll be in for a few surprises once they hear my project. Stay tuned for that one because it will be great.

Is there an artist you want to work with that you have not yet had the opportunity to work with? I would obviously like to work with all of the people I look up to. I think that’s everyone’s dream. To be able to do what you love with the people who inspired you from the start. I believe we need more love for our peers. I see a lot of artist that act like their scared to

Do you have advice for young people who want to become pop music producers? My advice to anyone who wants to become a music producer would be to have lots of patience and belief in yourself. I know from experience that success does not come overnight for everyone. Most people have to grind and work extremely hard to get their music out there to the world. There will be days when you’re going to feel discouraged and you’ll feel like just giving up. But you have to believe that if I keep focused and I work hard to put out the best material that I possibly can, I will be successful. Another good piece of advice that I have is to network as much as you can. In today’s world it’s so easy with social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You could be the best music producer out there but it won’t mean anything if you don’t get out and network because no one will know you. It’s all about who you know in the music industry.

What do you like to do for fun outside of working on music?

Outside of working on music I enjoy just kicking back and relaxing. I’m in to movies a lot to so I always try to get to the theaters whenever I can. I’m big on action flicks and romantic comedies. When it’s warm outside I enjoy going to the park and playing basketball. I find it to

“Most people have to grind and work extremely hard to get their music out there to the world.”

be very therapeutic. It helps me feel free and helps to clear my mind. On a more productive note I’m very interested in video and photography. I have a keen interest in short films they’re never straight forward and they make you think more the regular films do. I plan to start shooting some short films sometime soon.

What is the biggest struggle as a producer?

My biggest struggle so far as a music producer is just building a name for myself. Getting people to notice and appreciate your work is tough. Aside from that I would have to say making a living from making music. It’s sad but some people think producers like to

show love and support for another artist when it should be the other way around. Right now I have a few different artists I’ve discovered who I would love to work with In the future. Ryan Leslie, Drake, J.Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Fabolous, Tori Kelly, Sam Smith, Elle Varner, Meek Mill, Justin Timberlake and Ne-Yo are are some my top artist that I want to work with, but I wouldn’t really be opposed to working with anybody. As long as we can vibe and build some type of chemistry then we can work.

make music for fun and that they should just give their art away for free...That’s insane. I’ve worked with people in the past that I had to cut off because whenever I would mention being compensated, there was always an issue. As an artist you want to be paid for your shows, your music, your merchandise and everything else so you should expect to pay for your beats as well. Music producers are the backbone to music so the artist should be more than willing to make that investment. EXCLUSIvE INTERvIEW

LENNEY GARCIA INTERVIEW BY PHILLIP DIAS JR. Where were you born and what was your pre-model life like?

I was born and raised in New Jersey. Born in Passaic, raised in Paterson and Jersey City, along with frequent visits to Bayonne and New York City. My pre-model life was lively to be quite honest. I started dancing at an early age, as cliché as it sounds my grandma used to put the TV on and it would be Michael Jackson on stage performing— it took off from there. I was that skinny kid with the big head. I’ve always loved making people laugh, entertaining them, making people feel good, you know.

Your proportions are not that of a standard fashion model. How has this affected your career?

Well, I’m 5’11 to be honest which means I just made the cut. The average model height is 6’0 though.

Do you have any advice to male models or models in general?

Yes, your portfolio is everything. Agencies look for certain things in a photo, photos which bring out personality. You have to literally bring the sexy. As a model, you are a sex symbol, and you should think of yourself as such. Study poses from magazines, mimic them. And as a model you also need to have thick skin. Agencies or photographers will tell you your nose is too big, you’re too fat or too skinny and your face is not proportionate without having a care in the world. Just remember, how you handle yourself in these situations will determine the direction of your career. You have to be able to take criticism from everyone.

What has been one of your favorite career experiences in the past year? One of my favorite?

Tell us about your career as model. How did you get started? Well this story goes back to my career as a dancer. I was offered quite a few times to look into

24

[Laughs] I have quite a few to be honest… being contacted by a number of celebrity fashion stylists and agencies that want to sign me as well as designers that want me to wear their clothes feels great. I’m getting all this positive feedback as well as being able to move forward as a host, networking with other YouTube famous individuals. It’s been amazing.

modeling, which I never took seriously. For some time after I graduated high school my grandmother would always tell me to be a stripper, which I thought was hilarious. She always used to say, “why not? It’s quick money, and you have the body for it,” [starts laughing] my grandma was hilarious. She influenced my decision on taking it seriously. I started freelancing for individual designers but still didn’t think much of it until Phil came around. I’ve built an amazing portfolio with him and got my work out there by word of mouth/social networking.

Who would think that social media could become such a driving force? It’s pretty crazy when you think about it. Something we take for granted every day can be used to push your own career forth, it’s a powerful driving force.

Did you build your reputation/portfolio as a freelance model before being signed by an agency, or were you spotted by a scout? I’ve built my reputation as a freelance model. I still haven’t signed to an agency… there’s something I’m looking for. That’s a bit more private.

Can you explain how non-exclusive and exclusive contracts work?

Exclusive would be you solely belong to that agency and go for the work they provide. A non-exclusive contract would allow you to be signed with two agencies etc.

Tell us about the type of modeling you were doing— domestic, runway, commercial, editorial, etc., and what type of modeling do you enjoy most?

No restrictions. I’ve never done runway. I like commercial modeling because you have to play a role on video or in photographs, whether it’s a doctor, soccer player, just an average person… you have to really sell it and be convincing. I also like Editorial, that’s a completely different world altogether. Editorial models can all be commercial models, but it’s more unlikely for a commercial model to be an editorial model. It works so weird. And I happen to have the editorial model look.

What do you consider to be your career highlights, and what are you most proud of? Shooting for various independent clothing lines, meeting some a-list celebrities, the list goes on. It’s humbling. I’ll keep it a bit confidential, that’s another key in the modeling world. Confidentiality.

What do you love most about being a model? And, what do you least enjoy?

How does it feel to be a freelance model, do you ever think you will get more clients with an agency?

Its great being a freelance model, but it gets tiring. Do I think I’ll get more clients with an agency? Definitely, but there’s so much more to it than that. It’s not just about clientele, there’s also security and forms of representation.

You mentioned you have a Model Mayhem account. What does Model Mayhem mean to you?

Model Mayhem really did make it so much easier to connect with more established individuals in my field of work. Half of all the opportunities would not be possible without Model Mayhem. People should just know to be careful on it as with any other site. There will always be liars and people who seek to take advantage of you.

For Bookings: Lenney13@gmail.com Instagram: @ownlyinjersey Model Mayhem: modelmayhem.com/lenneyg

Free clothes, people adore you, the majority of people look at you differently, in a better way. The list of great things about being a model goes on. The pay is also great, but the criticism, the hours on hours of standing, getting turned down… yeah, not so fun.

come from a home where critical thinking was encouraged. So naturally I have found myself attracted to very profound concepts like Psychology. I became interested in people’s innerselves by starting to learn more about myself through introspection. I felt like if I couldn’t figure myself out, how could I understand others? So I focused on a more enhanced meaning of empathy. I feel like my purpose in this life is to support others and help change perspective. I fight for deeper understanding, and want others to challenge themselves and be open to others’ thoughts and beliefs, even if they don’t match their own. I believe in the diversity experience and what it has to offer.

I Am Zain PUBLISHER

THE PHOTOGRAPHER

I AM ZZAIN1

“Only today can change tomorrow.” Zzain1 BY PHILLIP DIAS JR.

I

started out as a Graphic Designer in the year 2006. When I started college, I was actively engaged in graphic designing, but during one class opened my creativity, and the way I looked at art had been completely changed. Prior to the course I assumed that art was something no more than an aesthetically pleasing painting, drawing, sculpture and photography. At the completion of the course, I began thinking of art in a different light. Photography means to paint with light and I soon realized that there was more to photography than pressing a button. I realized the goal of an artist is not simply to create a beautiful picture, rather to express opinions, ideas and feelings to a viewer. This is when I began to think of art as a movement of the soul and mind that is brought to life through my work. Similar to writing, art is simply another way we’re able to communicate thoughts to one another. I am beginning to see art is a universal language that can be understood by all who have the ability to tap into all your senses. This language can be used to express history, religion, politics, philosophy, reality, fantasy, complex feelings, emotions or anything a person wishes to evoke through their work. The photographer creates a painting to communicate something to the viewer and the role of the viewer is to analyze and attempt to find meaning within the work. I wish to help students become more aware of art as a beautiful language through which we can express ourselves. Over the years I’ve been working on my style

of photography and I realized I love to take pictures in a low light environment. Most of the pictures I took were of inanimate objects because I didn’t have any live models to work with. I took this opportunity to study an object and how the light wrapped around it. Midnight is when I did most of my photography. My midnight photography lead me to an idea which combined my low light photography with the setting of the day. I developed a name for my style: “After Dark Special.” It is a combination of my low light photography and my cinematic style. I worked with model Lenney Garcia, who is my close friend and he helped to develop the After Dark Special even further. Ever since I linked up with him, he has helped market my photography. Lenney also assisted my in building up my fan base on all the popular social media sites. He inspired me to branch out which I am truly thankful for. The purpose of my magazine is to not only showcase my work but it is also to serve as a platform for up-and-coming talents. So in other words, if you are musician, singer, dancer, or model, this magazine gives you a chance to show off those skills. I aim to capture the personality of the person, which is important because you want people to see you for who you are, and not for what you look like.
