M

y name is Eduardo Gil & that’s enough about me. How can I help? What is it you need me to do so that you can obtain that which you desire as a result? I need to know because it is my belief that darkness is where we begin & where we end. It isn’t until you shed some light to it & start forming shadows that you begin to shape it and form it. Expression is our gift of gratitude & I’m here to capture that. We don’t usually see light traveling in darkness of space because we only can see its reflection on substance. We see it everywhere & it’s time to see it in you. I am one who finds no limits to what can be achieve & accomplished. I paint the way light reacts to people & things. I bring passion to a craft where capturing the real, natural and sincere expression as if the camera was never in front of you. I Am Zain MUSIC

RYAN FLANNERY Ryan Flannery is a 22 year-old singer/songwriter from Dumont, NJ. He has fronted local rock bands Project Erie and Strive since 2005, and played alongside signed rock acts such as Smile Empty Soul, Like A Storm, and Dive. INTERVIEW BY: PHILLIP DIAS JR.

What aspect of making music excites you the most right now?

Being able to write songs that people who have never heard them can sing along to.

In what ways does the place where you live (or places where you have lived), affect the music you create, or your taste in music? Not too much. I feel like I’d write similar music if I was living where I wanted, which is California. However, I do think people would appreciate it more over there as opposed to Jersey.

When was the last time you wrote a song? What can you tell us about it?

Probably about a month ago. I’ve had a couple I’ve been tinkering with lyric-wise, so once I’m done with that I’ll have about five brand new ones. The most recent one is going to be called “Promise,” and

I Am Zain Photography/ FEBRUARY 2014

7

I wrote it about my cousin in the Army who served in Afghanistan a few years back. I’m really excited about it.

As you create more music, do you find yourself getting more or less interested in seeking out and listening to new music made by other people, and why do you think that is? I feel like the more I worry about what’s popular today and try to emulate it, the longer it takes me to write a song. I listen to enough of today’s music to influence my songwriting, but not so much that it takes away my individuality. I want to be current but I also want to be authentic.

Name a band or musician, past or present, who you flat-out love and think more people should be listening to. What’s one of your all-time favorite recordings by this band/musician?

I think that more people should be listening to the folk-pop duo The civil Wars. They have some of the most amazing songs and malefemale vocal harmonies I’ve ever heard. If you want to hear raw musical talent and you’re not biased towards a specific genre, I guarantee if you listen to them you will immediately fall in love. to hear his music, or receive any updates: Facebook.com/RyanFlanneryMusic check out his Youtube channel: Youtube.com/RyanPatrickFlannery

“I wanted to give my fans a piece of an insight into my life I didn’t want to just talk about puppy love no I wanted to dig into reality...” INTERVIEW BY: PHILLIP DIAS JR.

What producers, songwriters and/or artists do you see as your primary inspirations?

There are so many talented and legendary people that come to mind, like Ryan Leslie, or Swizz Beats— they inspired me to go to college to get my Bachelor’s Degree at a university in which I am currently attending for music production. I have tons of inspirations but the main people that have and will always inspire me are my fans. They are so supportive and motivated to see me succeed and accomplish more, they help me in their own unique ways and comfort me at my lowest points because, let’s face it, regardless of how much fame I’ll gain I’m still a normal guy and my fans understand that. I’ll always remain committed and humble to them. Finally, my mother is my greatest inspiration of them all; raising me as a single mother in the city of Paterson while not being

financially stable, always put a smile on our faces and would tell me each and every night to “pursue what makes you happy no matter what,” and I’ll always have her support as long as I have a smile. She’s a strong woman and I’m blessed to have her in my life as a parent.

Do you have a favorite musical project that you’ve worked on?

My favorite musical project I’ve worked on was my second album entitled, “VI/XIII.” I decided when I was working on this project I wanted to give my fans a piece of insight into my life. I didn’t want to just talk about “puppy love,” no. I wanted to dig into reality and talk about my life and so I wrote “Crazy Love” and “You Should Know,” which these tracks talked

12

a lot about my failed engagement and life experiences. I wrote these songs hoping that whatever I had gone through in my relationship, someone would relate to me as well. It worked [laugh out loud] and so I decided hey, from now on talk about yourself because no matter how many people are on this world, one person is going to relate to you.

Is there an artist you want to work with that you have not yet had the opportunity to work with?

I don’t think there is one artist I would not want to work with but the main artists that come off the top of the head hands down are Drake, Chris Brown and Jay-Z. These guys are at the top of the game and they influenced a lot of my music I make today. It would be

I Am Zain Photography/ FEBRUARY 2014

a dream come true to meet them, even to converse with them and gain some knowledge, also a part of their life stories would be more than an honor to me.

What do you like to do for fun outside of working on music?

I feel, if you lived in my shoes there would be no time for fun because I’m out doing something new. One day you’ll see me in school, the next you’ll see me protecting my neighborhood as a police officer, or defending my country as a soldier in the Army. I think the only thing I did for fun that took stress away was boxing. But I can’t even say that because with all the things I do in my life, I find a way to make it fun. I mean, we do only live once right? [Laugh

I Am Zain MUSIC out loud] why not enjoy it, even if to myself, “I’m not going down like you’re booked with tons of things to this.” I took a deep breath and it keep yourself busy! felt like a greater presence kicked in and I performed again and What or who made you want completely rocked the stage. Since then, I never looked back— I’m the to sing? singer I am today. Well at the age of nine, my grandfather passed away due to cancer. It hit me and my family so hard and I remember just sitting there in tears, just reminiscing about him playing his guitar, singing Puerto Rican country music and me grabbing my plastic electric guitar, acting like a rock star. Nothing made him laugh more than to see me rock on [laugh out loud]. It was encouragement— my stepping stone to realizing I was meant to entertain. I started singing and performing around the age of thirteen. I could think of this one performance… I actually had my first performance at my school’s talent show at Paterson Charter School for Science & Technology. I fractured my foot and I was told I could not attend the talent show because of safety hazards. I looked at my mom and said, “mom you know I want this, singing is in me. This is my chance to see if it’s meant to be.” She looked at me and said, “Let’s go now!” Let me just say this: I didn’t expect her to say let’s go, I had no song to sing or anything! I was so nervous; my first performance and I had nothing to sing. So I eventually got there on stage and the school staff looked at me like, “he’s here?” I didn’t care, I wanted to show my peers that this was me. To make a long story short, I began singing and was so nervous that I forgot my lyrics and choked! I looked at every one and thought

I Am Zain FASHION The “Updo Queen”

LEANNA REGINALD “Things you are passionate about are not random, they are your calling.” -Fabienne Frednickson Interview by: Phillip Dias Jr.

As a devoted hairdresser, I strive to please each and every one of my clients. I’m a freelance stylist who also manages a well established salon called, Sublime Salon and Spa of Ramsey. My styles truly vary from beach waves to the slicked back ponies to my favorite runway hair. In the salon, wild runway hair isn’t the “everyday” hairstyle. So I branched out to find models to let me showcase my work with the help of an amazing photographer Phil, to do what he does best: capture my unique out of the ordinary hairstyles. I was always a creative child growing up; my imagination just took off epically when it came to hair. Hair is my calling and I strive to create each style differently with its own unique flair.

What hair products is necessity?

Products can turn a bad hair day into a great hair week. Everyone has different needs, but if you do all the

right steps for your hair type, you’ll be amazed. SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONING

It’s funny when I ask my clients, “Do you shampoo and condition your hair the correct way?” They always look at me funny, as if there were a wrong way. And there is! - Quarter size shampoo, work into the scalp area and only the scalp! There is no need to shampoo the ends. The only thing you’re doing is stripping the color and natural oils and drying out your hair. - If you find it’s not lathering, add a little water! NOT MORE SHAMPOO! - Quarter size of conditioner from your ponytail down. No need to glob conditioner on your scalp. You create natural oils from your sebaceous glands. You don’t need to add more; by doing this you don’t have to wash your hair every day and will not look greasy!

What will be the hair for spring 2014 ?

For spring of 2014 there are going to be lots of down the center parts, sleek ponytails, natural looking bobs and of course messy braids!

What styles do you think

have seen their last days?

I love the look of the half shaved head but, this year they are going to put a more natural look on it. Meaning the transition from shaved to your full head of hair will be less dramatic.

What steps that everyone can take to ensure their hair is healthier?

To get healthier hair for all types is to have a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. - For my curly hair girls, don’t always straighten it. I know we always want what we don’t have but you’re damaging your hair. Get a good curl cream and add extra conditioner and you’ll love your curl I ensure you! - For my fine hair girls, add a volumizer before you blow dry along with a heat protective spray and your hair will have hold for the whole day! - For my straight hair girls, I know you want more than just that! You need a salt spray and a ponytail holder. Spray a little salt spray on damp hair along with a regular side swept braid and you’ll have beautiful beach waves.

I Am Zain Photography/ FEBRUARY 2014

31

I Am Zain FASHION How can I get rid of frizzes ? To get rid of frizz, you either need a haircut or just more moisture to your hair! In your regular routine add oil or a dime size of conditioner back into your hair from the ponytail down and byebye frizzes!

Is ombre still a thing?

Yes it is still a big thing, believe it or not! But it will be changing, it’s not going to be so dramatic, everyone is going for the natural Ombre look. The look will be a lot subtler than you’re used to.

Who is your hair icon?

My hair icon is Gwen Stefani, for her hairstyles! They are always out of this world!

Who inspires you?

So many people inspire me! From the barber shops to a high end salon, from the fall season to the summer! Everything I see I relate to hair. My sisters find it funny, because it’s all I talk about; it’s what I live for! It’s my dream to one day be able to speak in front of young hairdressers around the world and show them with hard work and dedication, you can do anything. In this industry there is always room for more! Hairstylist Bookings Contact: (201) 825 4700 Leannamreginald@aim.com

THE ART OF LOVE

Take Control This Valentine’s Day ALEX HAMMerli

Contributing Writer

Even stable couples face the risk of damaging their relationship if they aren’t doing enough or anything at all. Too many give into the hype and end up having the worst holiday ever due to forced action over natural. Valentine’s Day on a weekend is a disaster for anyone single or not, more often than not,

Valentine’s Day hosts a very similar situation when it falls on a weekend. During the week, it tends to be normal; people wearing red and carrying on, however the

34

I Am Zain Photography/ FEBRUARY 2014

Valentine’s Day is usually one of the worst days of the year for anyone. How can you make the best of a day made up by Hallmark? Don’t allow Valentine’s Day put take over the day or the weekend. The rest of the year is ahead. Rather than focus on being with someone for one day, treat it like any other Friday and proceed with your normal activities. Perhaps your friends in relationships may take it more seriously or handle it the way they see fit, but you are exempt from that responsibility! Take advantage of Valentine’s Day; if you like chocolate, all candy is on sale 50-75% off the day after, so have fun! Or just sit at home playing Xbox, reading or watching Netflix, but just remember there are much bigger things to worry about than a holiday.

There are two days most people in America dread: New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day. The problem with Valentine’s Day is when it lands on a Friday or Saturday— like it does this year, so much hype has to go into it. On New Year’s Eve, if you don’t do anything or have anywhere to go, you feel like you didn’t accomplish anything because you didn’t have plans for one night, even if you have had an amazing year.

weekend brings on that New Year’s Eve pressure. Single individuals feel forced to go out so as not to be deemed a “loser” by society. Some feel they have to go out and mingle or hook up with one of the available females at the club who may be upset because they are boyfriendless, in which they succumb to a new level of low standards just for the sake of feeling loved. Those in a relationship are pressured into having to treat Valentine’s Day like it’s an anniversary and birthday all in one.

I Am Zain THE ART OF LOVE

POEMS BY ZZAIN1 I Am Love: Some of you know who I am We first met when you cranked up that slow jam I was in the room for a minute, then lust came in people always confuse me for his twin I am here to make people enjoy life but why does it feel like in my back is a knife It hurts me when I put my neck out I’m either double crossed or filled with doubt Why does Lust get all the special treatment leaving me cold and alone in the basement Well I’m here to tell you all, no more No longer will you hide behind me, to get your big score I have a heart too yes it is true. For each heart that is broken I can feel the sorrow, the anger, the pain the list goes on, but what have I gained I invest my love to promote more happiness instead I get more stress They say that love can fade, yet here I stand I use to be high in demand Until I heard on a commercial sex sells What happened to long walks on the beach picking up shells Nope For those of you who actually treat me with tender love and care thank you for being fair For those of you who use my name and don’t mean it Well you know where you can stick. it.

so love equals war. But in order to be in war, you must have a form of hate for the opposing side. No matter what you say love generates hate... Passion is another word for intense love, its also is associated with fire. When you have a (fire) burning (love) passion you tend to focus on the fashion blinded by the brightness closing your eyes puts you in absolute darkness. Love burns slowing leading to hate, from that pain generates a battlefield built on rage. Fire is the end product of love. Once the war is over, you exist on the ground cold, hurt and lost. Do you really want to love? Once you have been left alone, with no one to pick you up from your feet How do you find the compassion to love again?... Faith.

Timeless: Time never sleeps. A memory never dreams. Now a Heart will always love... sometimes even hate. But when its cold and left alone...It will never break. Its the scars that heal over time in which it teaches us a lesson. Its the memories that give us reason to love So if they keep working on making making us better. How can a heart possibly fail you in love?

Fire > Love > Hate > War: Night Fall: Love is no different than Hate its only a tolerated copy of hate sometimes you think your in love but if you not in love then you are in war A battlefield associated with love

Bringing light to her eyes never had a need to lie trust is something that is earned and if abused can quickly burn...

ASK DARIA

Love & Pain. Peace & War. Fire & Ice. “Love is not complicated, people are.” -Daria S.

DARIA SZEP Contributing Writer

I was afraid that when I sat down to write this, I wouldn’t know what to say. Love is like that. It seems so complex and people have written countless books and articles on the subject and yet it still feels like a mystery to most of us. I think the most important part of understanding love is that it must be given in order to receive it. This is so hard to do because we all want to be loved. Most of the time, the only thing holding us back from getting love is that we are scared to give it. You have to be willing to take a chance and give without the expectation of getting anything in return. There’s nothing better than being loved in return. In the beginning just that victory is enough to make us happy. But what happens when it becomes a real relationship with real problems? There are so many factors involved in a successful relationship.

36

I Am Zain Photography/ FEBRUARY 2014

I Am Zain THE ART OF LOVE I truly believe communication is a main element. Being able to talk to each other and express your wants and needs makes things so much simpler. We are all different people and most of us are not psychic, which brings me to a few other important factors: Fight fair. It is not important to “ win” an argument. No one wins. Respect each other. Don’t call names. Don’t place blame. Respect each other. Yes, I say that twice because it’s so simple to say and yet hard to remember when you’re aggravated. Forgive each other. Forgiveness does not mean save it up to use against a person at a later date to “win” a fight. It also doesn’t mean we stay where we are not happy. Sometimes, even if we forgive a person we can’t move past what they’ve done to hurt us. That means move on. We only get what we put up with in life. Still forgive because carrying that to the next relationship will poison the new relationship like it poisoned the first one. Forgiveness is key in being happy with life in general. Recognize your partner’s gestures of love. We all communicate differently and we all express our love in different ways. I believe this is why love feels so much like a mystery. We have to remind ourselves that not everyone thinks the way we do. If we make love a selfless act we pay attention to our partner and what they perceive as a gesture of love and it should not be hard to show our love in a way they are receptive to. These things don’t always come naturally and may

require effort from both people in the relationship. But is there anything you wouldn’t do for true love? No relationship will be perfect or easy, but when there is real love it will always be worth it. If it has to be forced it isn’t true. If you aren’t getting at least an effort from the person you love, it may be time for you to realize that not all love is returned and you have to love yourself enough to be ok with that. A piece of you may always love that person, that’s what it means to love and expect nothing. Don’t take it personally. Don’t ask yourself why or what’s wrong with you. Forgive them, forgive yourself, and move on. You cannot get love if you stop giving it. I hope no one reading this is “alone” for Valentine’s Day. Realize you are never truly alone. There is always someone that you love. Make that day about showing your love instead of looking to receive love and watch how differently things feel. Augusto Suarez III I’m a just a man between generations. I live to bless the exit of the last generation and the entrance of the next. I have always thought of myself as a bridge; a bridge between mindset, personalities and perspectives. I link both similarities and differences together through the language of love and trust. The best way to do that is to do new things with those who genuinely value the lessons of life. If you want to make the first steps towards such an awareness, surround yourself with different people, in order to better understand yourself and the world around you. By embracing all ideas without bias or prejudice, analyzing facts and critically evaluating opinions, you can make judgments that lead towards commonality and progress. It’s my purpose to develop the same values in others, but I’m not limited by it. It’s okay if we don’t all have the same vision, or even disagree with the purpose of life. Being able to align with others is a sign of a good leader; it’s all a matter of finding a middle way. Fun facts: I play guitar and used to be a part of a band. Favorite food: Columbian Paisa
