ccording to statistics, nearly 6,200 weddings take place in the United States daily, and I’m pretty sure all those brides took over the George R. Brown convention center in January for the Bridal Extravaganza.
My sister, and 002’s lifestyle editor, Beatrice is getting married in October so we are in the midst of wedding planning and stopped by the Extravaganza to get organized. My wedding was out of the country, which made my CARLA VALENCIA de MARTINÉZ experience…well, honestly SO much easier than a local wedding. There’s so much you can’t control when it’s a destination wedding, I highly recommend it. Couples spend $72 billion per year on weddings and the average budget per couple is $20,000. I’m happy to say this issue has many options to help you spend it! We’re in LOVE with our fashion spread on page 40 shot by Kennon Evett. It will be hard to choose a dress, but Luvi Wheelock of Casa de Novia always has great options. Here are a few to get you day dreaming. We’ve also mixed in some J.Crew options, a great source for the bride, groom and bridal party frocks. Ladies, you’ll need some lacy lovelies to see you through the honeymoon, flip to page 32 for some options. And what about those last second emergencies? Beatrice has some remedies on page 39. Reyne Haines offers ideas for selecting vintage china on page 37. And check out some local couples that were recently hitched on page 50. April 22 is Earth Day, we honor Mother Earth on page 39. There’s so much more, so grab your favorite beverage, find a nice spot somewhere outside to take advantage of this fabulous weather before it gets too hot and turn the page – as always, we’re jam-packed with information. This month we asked our contributors to share a wedding memory…
On March 19, 1966, Texas Western University beat the University of Kentucky in the finals of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament 72-65. Unranked before the season started it was a glorious win for the Miners against the powerhouse Kentucky team. Bobby Joe Hill, at 5 foot 10 inches, scored 20 points and assured his place in college basketball history alongside his coach, Don Haskins. But basketball history wasn’t the only story rewritten that night. During this time of the Civil Rights movement, Coach Haskins started five African-American players for the first time in this championship game, while Coach Adolph Rupp’s Kentucky was the last team to start five white players in the championship game. The love of my life and I watched the game on TV on our wedding night. Among other things. VICTORIA BARTLETT | CONTRIBUTING EDITOR
Your wedding will come and go in a flash. Before you know it, you are on a plane Bali-bound. You and your husband are trying to remember details of the fabulous soiree, but unfortunately you soon realize you remember only bits and pieces. Having been a victim of this disorder once before, I decided to do something different the second time around. Once you’re done with all the formalities and you have shared some time with your guests dancing and prancing, step away for a brief moment. Grab your hubby, get some bubbly, find a spot that has a great view of the reception, take it all in and become a spectator. Observing the details and watching your guests having a ball is simply priceless and, yes…the memories will last forever!

EVENT RHAPSODY IN BLUES WHY POST-CONCERT PARTY WHERE HOUSE OF BLUES WHEN JANUARY 15
More than 200 music lovers flocked to the House of Blues for the Houston Symphony’s Young Professionals Backstage party where they were treated to a jazz-infused concert. Immediately following was the after party. Guests sipped on some cocktails, nibbled on some tasty bites courtesy of the HOB and enjoyed the spirited vocals of blues band Texas Johnny Boy.

Believe it or not, I have been the best man at three weddings (always the groomsman, never the groom, and let’s keep it that way). My first tour of duty took me to Mexico City to see my college roommate getting married at a leftist agitator’s rural compound. (There were wanted posters of our host posted in the garage.) My second best man role took me to Hilton Head, South Carolina, where everyone was drinking before and during the wedding at the yacht club. By the end of the ceremony, and before the reception, we were all showing each other our tattoos. My final trip down the aisle was in Seabrook for my friend Dallas’ wedding at the Lakewood Yacht Club. I was told repeatedly that I would not have to make a toast but, sure enough, two hours and 87 drinks in, I found the spotlight on my face and a mic in my hand. Luckily, I’m a charming drunk and everything went over pretty well. I’m available for your next wedding if your prospects are pretty slim.

I feel like I’ve been to a million weddings in the last 2 years. Every single one different but every single one beautiful. From weddings at country clubs, on ranches, in hotels – so many had unique and beautiful touches. Being that I’m now in the hot seat planning my own wedding, I applaud all those beautiful brides and those details that you spent time and effort, sleep, thinking over. I never leave a wedding scrutinizing the details. My most memorable experiences are when you walk down the aisle. I cry every single time. It’s a beautiful moment coming to culmination walking toward your best friend. It’s the most unplanned, unrehearsed, awaited moment when true emotion radiates. This raw beautiful moment is the one I’m most looking forward to on my day. Hopefully, I’ll keep my tears in this time.

EVENT PASSION FOR FASHION WHY KICK-OFF PARTY WHERE ROBIN REIMER’S HOME WHEN MARCH 23
The Passion for Fashion kick-off party, hosted by Robin Reimer, recapped the luncheon, which featured an interview with Designer Dana Buchman and benefitting the Fashion and Interior Design programs at Houston Community College. Guests mingled and munched on hors d’oeuvres as they floated around Reimer’s gorgeous dwelling, admiring the display of award-winning designs from the 2009 Flash and Trash Event, where students turned recycled materials into wacky and wearable art in hopes of winning cash awards and donated couture gowns.

1. THE MENIL COLLECTION www.menil.org
Leaps into the Void: Documents of Nouveau Réalist Performance, on view thru August 8, 2010, draws from the Menil’s strong holdings of work and material from the archives and collection that document, through film, photographs and works of art, the movement’s ephemeral and performancebased projects, perhaps most famously epitomized by Yves Klein’s “Leap into the Void.” Organized by Michelle White, Assistant Curator, the show highlights the temporality of a lesserknown avant-garde movement. Actively engaged with other conceptual and performance-based ways of making art as they were emerging in the United States at that time, such as Fluxus, Assemblage and Pop Art, Nouveau Réalisme was a brief but influential moment in the history of modern art. 2. HOUSTON CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHY www.hcponline.org
HCP´s Main Gallery features first-generation CubanAmerican Anthony Goicolea´s: Related. The artist strings together a complex series of dialectics denoting the Cuban-American experience of assimilation and desire to maintain ancestral histories. The focal point for this body of work is Goicolea´s family: four generations of Cubans who fled for the U.S. in 1961. On view thru April 25, 2010. 3. THE ROTHKO CHAPEL www.rothkochapel.org
An intimate sanctuary available to people of every belief, this modern meditative environment was inspired by the paintings of American abstract expressionist Mark Rothko. The Chapel serves as both art museum and public forum and hosts a range of educational programs, inter-religious dialogues and symposia on critical issues. 4. BYZANTINE FRESCO CHAPEL MUSEUM www.menil.org/visit/byzantine.php
The only intact examples of 13th-century Byzantine wall painting of this size and importance in the Western Hemisphere, these masterworks were stolen by thieves from a chapel in the Turkish occupied town of Lysi, cut into pieces and smuggled off the island of Cyprus. Rescued and restored by the Menil Foundation, the dome and apse now reside on a longterm loan from the Church of Cyprus in an intimate chapel designed by award-winning architect Francois de Menil.

ESPERANZA, CABO SAN LUCAS MEXICO By Carla Valencia de Martinez
As I sit in the back of the Escalade that swooped me up at the Cabo airport, I am captivated, as I am every time I visit Cabo, by the desert drive that leads to the beaches and resorts. The climate is perfection, warm enough days to soak up the sun beachside followed by cool evening dinners outside among fire pits. It’s one of the few locations that captures the best of both worlds, miles of cacti and dry terrain dead-ending at mountain scapes or endless ocean. I arrive at hope (Esperanza in Spanish) and am received by Victoria, my personal concierge, and led on a quick orientation tour to my casita #58 which is well appointed and boasts a beautiful beach view through the interlocking sliding doors that bring the terrace into my bedroom. Moments later, I am made a delicious margarita on the rocks…ay, ay, ay…I’m going to like it here… Day one is gone and so far Esperanza exceeds. Thursday nights sees Mexicanisimo, a popular Mexican themed night dinner overlooking the beach with Mexican décor, a beautiful spread of buffets featuring tacos al pastor, enchiladas, a seafood medley with the most delicious octopus and fresh red snapper, a desserts station and more. There’s also a Mercado featuring local artisan work. There is a variety of guests, from families on Spring Break, a few honeymooners, older couples getting away, as well as a fair share of couples expecting a baby relaxing before their big day. The “relax, unwind and disconnect” part is easy to achieve. I wake every day rested between 5:30-6am to catch the sunrise sitting on the generous sized day bed with aforementioned sliding doors completely open listening to the ocean and my iPod gently crooning in the casita’s docking station while sipping my freshly brewed Keurig dark roast. The gym is perfectly appointed with treadmills, elliptical, bicycles and a separate weight room. Next door, the spa merges interior spaces exterior spaces flawlessly and there are plunge pools and steam room areas that lead into an exterior relaxing area with large beds off of which are various treatment rooms each with their own outside shower. A LOT OF PEOPLE WANT THE WORK TO STAY THE SAME 20 YEARS LATER, 40 YEARS LATER; I EMBRACE THE CHANGES THAT HAPPEN. TIME IS AN IMPORTANT CONCEPT IN YOUR WORK – THE LAYERS OF TIME AND SUCH. BEING THAT OUR CONCEPT OF ‘TIME’ IS CHANGING SO RAPIDLY BECAUSE OF THE IMMEDIACY OF EVERYTHING IN THIS DAY AND AGE, HOW ARE YOU DEALING WITH THAT – IS THAT AFFECTING YOUR WORK? Yes. I made one work at the end of October, beginning of November, it was called “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough…” Actually, the work was called “Traffic.” It was based on the song “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” but it was based on bird songs. YOU’RE STEALING MY THUNDER ALREADY. I HAD THIS QUESTION WRITTEN… Oh, I’m sorry! I don’t know if I ever actually publicly talked about this with that work but there’s so much of our communication now is through text messaging and email that I think because of that, the roots with relationships are less grounded. With relationships and also with home, because we’re moving so much. I think that people are feeling that. I’m feeling that. I’m working with materials a lot of the time off of the street and I also embrace how things change over time. Even how my work changes over time. A lot of people want the work to stay the same 20 years later, 40 years later; I embrace the changes that happen.
THEY’RE ONE-DIMENSIONAL. Right. WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW? I’m interested in working on the memory collage some more. I’m about to talk to Mary Beth Edelson, an artist who’s in New York, and we’re going to do a show together in 2010 in Dallas. She’s a feminist artist and a pioneer in the feminist art movement. She’s been doing these performances that are one-on-one, and she makes eye contact at the person and the person stares back at her until one of the people breaks the gaze. That experience is recorded with 3 photographs. And then after that performance is done, she makes a drawing based on her perspective of the performance. So there are 4 perspectives – there are those 3 photographs and then there’s the drawing, and she doesn’t share the drawing. It’s her personal documentation; and so the idea that part of the work is something that no one ever sees I find really interesting. But I don’t know what part of the project she’s most fascinated with, and I’m looking forward to getting to talk to her more about this while in New York and being able to collaborate with her in some way.
YOUR WORK HAS ALWAYS ENCOURAGED PARTICIWHEN YOU DO A LARGE-SCALE WORK LIKE PATION. NOT WITH EVERY ONE OF THEM, BUT WITH “WELCOME,” THE BRAILLE ESPLANADE PROJECT IN A LOT OF THEM YOU ENCOURAGE THE PARTICIPANEW ORLEANS, THE REALITY IS THAT WITH A WORK TION OF THOSE VIEWING YOUR WORK. THIS SORT THAT’S OVER 100 FEET LONG, PEOPLE ONLY REALLY OF REFERS TO THE LAST QUESTION, BUT AS WE EXPERIENCE A PART OF IT AT A TIME. DO YOU THINK MOVE MORE AND MORE INTO THIS SORT OF NARABOUT THAT, THAT YOUR LARGER WORKS ARE EXPECISSISTIC SOCIETY WHERE EVERYONE HAS A RIENCED IN PIECES? FACEBOOK OR A TWITTER PROFILE BY WHICH THEY Yes, I do. I always think about that, actually, with all of Foxglove 2009 – (exhibited at Performa, 2009) COMMUNICATE AND SORT OF PUT THEMSELVES my work. Even if it’s a small object, I think about how Two Photographic Prints that comprise one work. Both are of the same OUT THERE, DO YOU EVER WORRY THAT THE WONsomeone’s going to enter the room and what it would be images taken from the exact same file. One is a Digital C-Print on Glossy DER OF PARTICIPATION WILL EVER GET LOST? like if someone were 6 feet tall or if it was a child and paper. The other is an Inkjet Pigment Print on thick cotton rag, similar Well, I feel like the participation that we are doing is if the room was full of people. So, when thinking maybe I shouldn’t go there, but I think that participatabout Welcome, I thought about all the different views ing on Facebook or participating on Twitter is very different from participating live. coming into the city park, coming into the museum, from various spaces in the And having a live exchange with someone… the quality of that is richer. Our mempark. ories are formed in nine dimensions, and in front of the computer screen, we don’t experience time the way we do moving in architectural space. In movies, when they BACK TO WHERE YOU STOLE MY THUNDER EARLIER, WHY DID YOU CHOOSE screen architectural spaces, they’re pushing you through the spaces to help you “AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH” FOR “TRAFFIC?” create better memories of what’s going on. And I think that time is moving faster Because it was my little brother’s favorite when he was about 5, and at that time I because we’re spending more time in front of the screen, and we are creating more was walking in the botanical gardens where they were protesting the expansion of relationships that are more shallow in a way because the memories of these relathis road nearby and I was curious why they were protesting this and I did some tionships are more difficult to grasp. research and found that the sound of automobile traffic was affecting bird populations – and my brother’s first word was ‘bird.’ So all of these things came together to make this work. I don’t know if my brother is crazy about this work. He doesn’t like Diana Ross anymore –and it was the Diana Ross version. Now, he’s not as fond. www.mollygochman.com

Hire a nanny(s) to watch over the kids and to coordinate activities. Set up an activity table with arts and crafts. Essential! Provide snacks and refreshments – kid-friendly of course! Organize games such as musical chairs and bingo. Set up a cinema corner; provide movies, game station and comfy seating. Face painting – always a favorite! Last but not least… Provide a “snooze zone” with sleeping mats and blankets. A must-have so parents don’t have to leave early.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS BUSINESS? I followed my passion of cooking and entertaining. WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER EVENT COMPANIES? Swift + Company is a turnkey business that provides execution of all aspects of an event under one roof. We specialize in catering, event design and planning. We create and meld all the pieces of an event together including invitations and paper goods, tasteful menus, fine wine and libations, trained staff, unique décor, furniture, equipment, entertainment, sound and lighting, permits and transportation. Additionally, we draft and manufacture many of our own event designs to ensure they are unique to your party. While Swift + Company offers full-service event production, our rental company is a separate entity that anyone may utilize. We love advising those who already have the cuisine portion of their event covered but are looking for beautiful and unique rental pieces.
ELIZABETH SWIFT COPELAND | SWIFT + COMPANY
DESIGN TRENDS? Minimalist and colorful. Simple, elegant and clean. WHY EVENTS? I love taking a clean palette and transforming it into an extraordinary event. Taking a client’s vision and turning it into something beyond their expectations is thrilling.
{
HOW DO YOU STAY CURRENT? I stay current by traveling, shopping, reading current publications and dining in “trend-setting” cities like Los Angeles, New York and Paris. I love trying new restaurants – not just for the food, but also for the décor and atmosphere. Design is such a major part of the “going out” experience. For me, a great restaurant has to appeal to all my senses and offer an element of surprise. DO MOST CLIENTS COME IN WITH A CLEAR VISION OR DO YOU CREATE ONE? Most clients can generally describe the event they have in mind, but we take their ideas to the next level and execute them seamlessly. Most are unaware of the details involved in putting on a large, cohesive, smoothly run event.

BELLS WILL BE RINGING… by Reyne Haines Photography by Jill Hunter
OMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW…SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE.” THIS TRADITION COMES FROM AN OLD ENGLISH RHYME “SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE, A SIXPENCE IN YOUR SHOE.”
The first four items the bride either carries with her or adds to her wedding outfit, all represent good luck. They are often given to the bride by her mother, sister or other relatives. Sometimes the bride will acquire these items on her own, or she might receive them from her bridal party. Something old represents continuity; something new represents high hopes for the future, something borrowed symbolizes borrowed happiness and something blue stands for fidelity, love and purity. The sixpence part (which we rarely hear in the US) represents…you guessed it, prosperity. Every bride needs formal china to use at dinner parties and Christmases to come. Special events call for special things. This leads me back to the “Something Old, Something New” part of the rhyme. Have you considered having a vintage dinnerware pattern as your something old and making it new again?
Vintage china can be a good thing for many reasons. First, you don’t have to worry about your best friend choosing the same pattern (much like the dread of being seen wearing the same dress!). It certainly makes for interesting conversation when you are asked, “Where did you get this great dinnerware?” Second, it can still be found in mint condition, just as if it was made yesterday. Third, what better way to recycle? If those reasons weren’t enough, not only is it often very affordable (then your guests have money left over to pitch in for that fabulous latte machine for the kitchen you’ve been eyeing!), but there are thousands of patterns, periods and companies to choose from to reflect your style. There were numerous German, English, French and American companies creating complete lines of dinnerware as far back as the early 1800s (and some even before then!).
If you are concerned that buying vintage porcelain will not offer a broad array of service pieces, think again. In the 1800s to early 1900s, dinner was much more formal than what it is today. You had a different stemware for each course of the meal (water, iced tea and wine), along with an array of dinner, salad, bread and dessert plates, dessert, soup and salad bowls, etc.
A FEW EXAMPLES OF THE MULTITUDE OF STYLES AVAILABLE: TIFFANY & CO: Audubon pattern – this is a white porcelain plate with a thick single color border with gold trim. This would be perfect for a more sophisticated, formal (even contemporary) look. LIMOGES: Bramble – this pattern offers a scalloped edge with a floral motif in the center and around the outer rim. MEISSEN: Blue Onion – a very popular pattern by this maker. This pattern works well with a country or traditional style home. ARABIA: Ruska – An extremely popular Finnish design for the modern, less formal crowd. A final consideration when buying something vintage…at some point, this pattern might be handed down to your children, who in turn might hand it down to theirs. You never know when you might be starting a family tradition. So where can you locate a variety of vintage dinnerware to determine which pattern is right for you? There are a few places: Right here in Houston, visit Carolyn Thompson’s Antique Center of Texas. If you like shopping online, visit Replacements Ltd. http://www.replacementsltd.com All china available at Carolyn Thompson’s Antique Center of Texas.

Theoretically, the Potty Patch is a great idea. It looks prettier than the wee wee pads strewn around the house on rainy days…but Murci hasn’t figured it out yet. I love the concept; it’s green and ecofriendly. The three-tiered patch has an Astroturf top, a collection tray and the bottom tray. It also traps odors and bacteria, making it the best solution for rainy day accidents. www.pottypatch.com I love Burt’s Bees rosewater and glycerin toner. KELLI KICKERILLO AND TODD FORESTER (the bride is keeping her name!) December 19, 2009
The overall feeling of the wedding was elegant simplicity…though the planning and details were anything but simple. The night seemed like an effortless flow from a refined religious ceremony at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, officiated by Rev. Troy Gately, to an elegant seated dinner to a colorful, fun dance party and reception at the Museum of Fine Arts. The bride wore a dress by Lisette Lux Haute Couture and Lace Overlay by Christabel Chiquillo with custom-made Christian Louboutin shoes. Mark Miller of Stems Custom Floral created the all-white décor with over 20,000 white roses flown in for the amazing white spheres that studded the reception. City Kitchen served comfort food including a wedge salad and filet with macaroni and cheese! The first dance song was a recording of Frank Sinatra’s All the Way and the Father/Daughter Song was a recording of Through the Years sung by the bride’s mother. MARZI FATEMIZADEH AND KONSTANTINOS (DINO) PETRIS July 31, 2008, Athens, Greece
Nearly 2500 years after the battles of Salamis and Marathon, large groups of Persians once again descended upon Athens – this time for love, not war. One year after Dino proposed to me while visiting his family in Athens, we returned to Athens for our wedding. The whitewashed church by the Aegean sea provided the perfect backdrop for a memorable ceremony, followed by a celebration with family and friends which lasted until the early hours of the morning. This time, the only battles that took place between the Greeks and the Persians were on the dance floor. Photography by Arthur Garcia, www.selectstudios.com

SHYLA BATLIWALLA AND DANOOSH KAPADIA February 4, 2010, Bombay, India – May 1, 2010, San Francisco
For all practical purposes, Danoosh and I should have been married in baggage claim at Bush Intercontinental Airport. We shared our first kiss, many teary-cheeked goodbyes, and even our proposal right there in front of swarms of harried passengers and fraying Samsonites. Our careers kept us apart for many months; I was working as a writer in San Francisco and he was working as an engineer in Houston. The airport, consequently, was an ideal place for us to commit to each other for a lifetime. With his family in Bombay and my family in San Francisco, we got two big, fat Indian weddings. Our Bombay wedding took place in February. It was truly a magical day filled with love, family, 800 guests, and, of course, lots and lots of curry. The best thing about getting married (as clichéd as it sounds) is waking up and going to sleep with your best friend in your bed and finding comfort in the knowledge that he’s contractually obligated to be there. IT IS THE MARRIAGE OF COMMUNITY AND DESIGN THAT DEFINES THE ART OF ARCHITECTURE. WHETHER IT’S A MIXED-USE PROJECT SUCH AS THE TIME WARNER CENTER IN MANHATTAN, WHICH PROVIDES A GREAT EXAMPLE OF THE NEED TO MELD 5 STAR ZAGAT RESTAURANTS, AUSTIN’S WHOLE FOODS AND THE MANDARIN HOTELS U.S. FLAGSHIP WITHIN THE HISTORIC MIX OF PRE-WAR RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS AND ENHANCE WALKABILITY IN A CITY KNOWN FOR SUCH, OR TO HAVE INNATE ABILITY TO “GET IT” AND BE ABLE TO DESIGN “NEW” TO MERGE WITHIN A HISTORIC COMMUNITY IN A WAY THAT EVEN THOSE IN THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY SAY “WHAT A GREAT OLD HOUSE” WHEN IT WAS BUILT 6 YEARS AGO.
me throughout the entire, labyrinthine course. I’d want them to listen to me, but also educate me on the process as we go – really, to act like a “professional friend.”
EDUCATION BACKGROUND: Texas A&M University, Bachelor of Environmental Design Arizona State University, Master of Architecture
HOW CAN CHILDREN BE ENCOURAGED TO APPRECIATE ARCHITECTURE? Art exists as a marvelous result of mankind’s innate need and desire to create. To me, architecture is an art form that clearly depicts Man creating in God’s world. It’s why I named our firm Brickmoon – human creation (brick) meets divine creation (the moon). Children need their inherent creativity affirmed and encouraged. By pointing them to architecture, we show them a wonderful means of creative expression that’s both beautiful and practical. It’s also a great way to teach children the benefit of working toward something that lasts, enduring for generations.

Custom home design and construction is a team effort, so it would also be important to choose a firm that has a proven track record at assembling teams and steering those teams in the right direction. Everyone from builders to interior designers to cabinet-makers… I’d want my designer to have good relationships with those people and know how to lead them all the way from concept to movein.
IF YOU WERE NOT AN ARCHITECT, WHAT WOULD YOU BE? A fly-fishing guide. Showing people around nature, helping them appreciate their surroundings, and teaching them a skill… that’s a nice back-up career.
SPECIALTY: Upscale custom homes in a variety of styles as well as residential renovations. CURRENT PROJECTS: We have a pretty diverse portfolio and our current projects reflect that. Right now, we’re working on a modern custom home in Garden Oaks, a craftsman in the Heights, a traditional style in Braes Heights and a number of renovations (new kitchens, master baths and room additions) inside the Loop. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN? I’m inquisitive, by nature. I love asking good, probing questions and, honestly, I love to listen. To me, 90% of the design process is about communication. It’s about finding out what a client wants, why they want it and helping them understand the path from vision to reality. In a lot of ways, the relationship between client and designer is like a little marriage: its health relies on proper communication; understanding needs, desires, and expectations; and having a common goal. Oh, and having fun along the way. WHAT SHOULD A BUYER BE LOOKING FOR IN A PROSPECTIVE ARCHITECTURE FIRM FOR THEIR CUSTOM HOME DESIGN? The design process can be daunting. It can be long and complicated and represents a substantial investment of your time, mental energy and money. If I were shopping for a designer, I’d look for one who would function as an advocate for

SAM W. GAINER has been in public accounting since 1975. He received a BBA in accounting from The University of Texas at Austin in 1967 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from The University of Texas School of Law in 1970. Sam is an accomplished photographer, having traveled to more than 108 countries, capturing the stunning visual images that appear in the annual GD&D calendar. He is also a terrific ragtime piano player with three albums to his credit, a past president of the Houston Society of Magicians and builds furniture in his spare time.

Greg: SO SAM, WHAT’S THE BIGGEST RISK YOU’VE TAKEN IN YOUR LIFE? Sam Gainer: I’ve got to say that my decision to take over the accounting practice of W.D. Dawson and agreeing to pay him $2,500 a month for the next five years, when I had no money to put down, was a real risk for me. I couldn’t take any real salary but I could see the potential and that this thing could be built into something really big. I’m glad that I took that risk as it’s turned into what is now Gainer, Donnelly & Desroches and over 130 employees – so I’m trying to open doors for the people around me who have that same potential and vision. I get a lot of satisfaction in that. Dawson Carter once said to me before he left, “Sam, when you get to the end of the road, it’s going to be a bit of a humbling experience as you’re going to find out that you’re not as irreplaceable as you thought you were...” And gradually clients that had confidence in him developed confidence in me and that’s what I’m doing now here at GD&D.

TRIED AND TRUE CLASSICS The wedding world is naturally dominated by women (as you can see in this issue) and men can easily be overlooked. But tried and true classics always complete a groom’s look. A flawless pair of Rayban shades, an heirloom Vacheron Constantin Historique Ultra-fine 1968 watch to hand down to your son some day, some sharp Frank Ghery for Tiffany & Co. cufflinks and a sterling silver tie clip from J.Crew. The key is to look back at your wedding pictures with no regrets‌

THE TALKYONE BLUETOOTH SPEAKER So maybe you don’t like talking on your cell phone with a geeky-looking device dangling from your ear. Here is a simple and stylish way to talk hands-free and listen to your tunes without a headset. The TalkyOne from Novero is a universal Bluetooth speakerphone that syncs with almost any wireless phone. About the size of an iPhone, fix it to your dashboard or clip it to your visor. Novero designed it with safety in mind by putting just one button on the device. Hit it and you’re talking, rock it back-and-forth to change the volume. Its noise reduction and echo cancellation make for good clarity on calls. The battery lasts for about 15 hours of talk time but my fave feature is when The TalkyOne talks to you...it tells you who is calling when your phone rings. That’s even better than a secretary.

VERTU CONSTELLATION AYXTA All cell phones are not created equally. Nokia subsidiary Vertu is the prime example. Not only are its phones on the high-end of tech specs, take a peek at the price tag. But you get what you pay for. The Constellation Ayxta is the company’s first clamshell phone. Choose from models with polished stainless steel, ceramic keys and leather casing. World travelers will utilize its 20-plus languages and GSM multiband coverage. But the luxury comes with the service features. The Concierge gives the elite customer a direct line to a customer care rep who can address any questions with just a single button press. The Select City Brief uses the GPS to automatically change time to the local time zone and get the lowdown on the happening places in the vicinity. Talk ain’t cheap, though.

RAZER VESPULA MOUSEPAD
NIKON D3S
Seriously? A review for a mousepad? Only when one is extraordinary and has benefits. Not just to prevent carpel tunnel syndrome but to enhance your GAME. Razer makes high-end gaming products and peripherals “for gamers, by gamers.” Its new Vespula mousepad is dual-sided to provides gamers with the choice of a speed surface for faster mouse movements or a control surface that picks up even the most precise of mouse movements. My extended gaming sessions have been easier on my wrists thanks to a gel-filled memory conformance wrist rest. That is nerd-speak for less fatigue or potential strain. The gel pad is removable and the grippy corners keep the mousepad in place. Game on!
The last camera you will ever buy? Possibly. Nikon effectively declared the pixel war over with its D3 two years ago: It shot a mere 12 megapixels – less than most point-andshoots – but began the low-light arms race. Its new D3s model again forsakes more megapixels for more light and it’s a tiny miracle of engineering. It uses a completely new sensor that refines elements of photography. The camera shoots up to an equivalent of ISO 102,400, far beyond any film you could buy at Walgreens. (Does Walgreens still sell film?) At that level, you’re talking night vision. It is a bit heavy at 3 pounds, without a lens, but probably has the best ergonomics in its class. With dual CF card slots and a big battery, this will hold generations of photos and high-def video though. While costly, this could indeed be the last camera you will ever buy.

YOU’RE MY OBSESSION
By Tim Moloney
I AM COMPLETELY OBSESSED BY MANY THINGS: MORMONISM, SCIENTOLOGY, PROSTITUTION, INTERVENTION, TOOL ACADEMY, CASSEROLES, RED MEAT, BEER-BATTERED ASPARAGUS, CARS, DIGITAL WATCHES (HAVE YOU SEEN WILLIAM BETTS’ VINTAGE PULSAR TIME COMPUTER?) AND MOST OF ALL, SHOES. I’d be embarrassed to tell you how many pairs I have in my thankfully large closet – from $3 Old Navy flips to my prized collection of Barker Black brogues and YSL Jonny Boots. (Speaking of brogues, Duckie Brown is doing a special Florsheim collection this season that is beyond ill…check it out at www.barneys.com.) But back to YSL, as things often go. A few weeks ago, our friends Michael and Miguel at the Houston store notified me that the line’s new sneakers are in stock. Rejoice, tennis shoe lovers! This is not the stuff you will see at Academy, and the prices reflect the difference. First up is the Y-strap sneaker, available in blue and black. The fabrics are canvas and suede with (guess what?) a leather Y-strap. It’s yours for $445. My favorite would have to be the Y-Run. This high-top black and white shoe features tie-dyed degrade leather. It’s a vintage, worn look, and every one is different. Strap ’em on for $525. Oh, so you’re a more cautious, conservative fellow. Well, I can’t deny that you people are out there. Maybe you need to proceed to Gucci and investigate this shiny blue leather driver ($440). Color is so big for spring and summer and this is the perfect shoe to be on trend without making yourself an object of derision by the guys at Woodrow’s. Trust me, girls will think you’re really fine or possibly gay. Either way, that sorta gives you the edge. Find them at www.neimanmarcus.com.
BITS AND BITES At this point, you’re probably tired of me talking about my enduring love for the hamburgers at Bar Annie, Flemings, etc. Well, I’m cheating on both of them with the American Kobe Beef Burger with pickled red onions, pommes frites, white cheddar or Stilton cheese at creepy/medieval Mockingbird Bistro. Sixteen bucks well spent. Visit www.mockingbirdbistro.com. You can even do your laundry at the washateria next door while you’re eating. Next rec: for dinner, steel yourself and
head downtown to Hearsay Gastro Lounge on Travis, where the 12 Spot used to be. They’ve got a choice filet accompanied by scalloped potatoes, sautéed asparagus and topped with a port wine reduction for $21. My only complaint: my steak was ordered medium rare and came out medium. On the other hand, the service can’t be beat. Ask for manager Jeff Scoggins. www.hearsayhouston.com.
LEAN OUT WITH LAYN More on hotel workouts….The trick to maximizing your workout in a confined area, in a minimal amount of time, is to never stop moving. Circuit sets are the way to go, and full body movements optimize this further. Some great workouts that can be done circuit-set style are the burpie, mountain climbers and jumping jacks. BURPIES are done by starting in push-up position. You do a push-up, then bring your feet in so that you’re in a squat position. This is followed by reaching for the ceiling until you’re on your tip toes. Come back down and put your hands down, then kick out your legs to begin the second push-up. Do enough in a row and you’ll grasp the meaning of the name. MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS also start in the push-up position. You bring your right knee toward your chest, then kick it out back to starting position while bringing the left knee in. Alternate back and forth as rapidly as possible. Add in jumping jacks and try all three workouts back to back for 15-20 reps each for a set. Do 5-10 sets with no more than one minute rest between sets. Upon completion, you can feel better about hitting happy hour to celebrate your new marriage. Any questions? You can contact me @ layn.getlean@gmail.com
AND BEFORE WE GO No time to work out? That’s BS, and as your punishment, you are sentenced to wear a man-girdle. Huh? Spanx, the company that has tortured women for years, has evened the score with Spanx for men, or Manspanx. Supposedly, the end results are nothing short of amazing. The stretchy cotton compresses a beer belly and firms up less than perfect pecs. The fabric is breathable and it also provides lower back support. Prices start at $58 and styles come in traditional crew, vneck and tanks. Find them at Neiman Marcus, you lazy bum.

ALRIGHT, GUYS. NATURALLY THE GROOM IS NERVOUS ABOUT THE BIG DAY…AND THE GROOMSMEN ARE EITHER A WRECK BECAUSE THEY ARE ONE STEP CLOSER TO HAVING TO POP THE QUESTION TO THEIR GIRLFRIEND OF 5+ YEARS, OR THEY ARE CHILL TO SEE YOU’VE FINALLY CROSSED OVER TO THE MARRIAGE CLUB AND WILL NOW BE ABLE TO INCLUDE YOU IN COUPLES OUTINGS. BUT WE ARE GETTING AHEAD OF OURSELVES … BACK TO THE DAY. JUST KEEP IT COOL. HERE IS SOME BASIC 101, BOYS. • DON’T get wasted the night before or the day of.
• DO write a speech or be ready to say something nice to the couple, the parents, someone. • DO follow the very basic rule of one glass of water per alcoholic beverage.
• DON’T plan a contact sport the day of (or even a few weeks before) – you don’t need any broken limbs.
• DON’T lose it with some inappropriate story about that time in college or something…
60. april 10 | www.002mag.com
• DO stick to golf – or even safer, go the spa.

• DO relax during the ceremony. Remember to breathe. You DON’T want to be the one who faints! Relax – most eyes are on her anyway.
for more it’s cool to, go to 002mag.com
DON’T forget the ring ;)
• DO have your luggage ready to go along with any travel documentation you may need, but DON’T leave the day after; give yourselves a day to recuperate. april 10 | www.002mag.com .61

THERE IS ONE THING I ADORE ABOUT TEXAS, IT’S OUR BBQ. NOT JUST RESERVED FOR WHEN RODEO IS IN TOWN, BBQ IS OUR WAY OF LIFE HERE.
So it’s no surprise that we are picky and competition is stiff. You can’t just slather up some meat in BBQ sauce and call it BBQ. You’ve got to perfect the smokiness of your meat, choose the best cuts and your sauce – well, let’s just keep it simple. Don’t dress it up and don’t stray too far from the classic. You can get a lot of heat from Texans for doctoring up a sauce. Keeping all of this in mind, I put on my big girl boots and focused on the task at hand. Does Brookstreet BBQ have what it takes? I visited the Westheimer location. Out of the 3 locations they have, this is the most different. The other two are ranch-style freestanding restaurants. This one focuses on the customer around them. Cafeteria-style line service keeps you moving with the menu hanging behind for those waiting in line to peruse. All the usual suspects are present: chopped beef, sliced meat plates, ribs, potato salad, beans, stuffed baked potatoes, it’s all here. And from the moment you walk in, it smells DIVINE! I was literally in a BBQ “scent” coma by the time my partners in crime arrived.
Our table was served with a feast of their offerings. From a plate overflowing with meats to ribs, to a basket of sweet potato fries and fried okra, to a basket of toasty bread for dipping or sandwich making. With zero hesitation, we all attacked the spread. I have a confession: I’m not a rib eater. At all. But their ribs looked like utter perfection. Not over-slathered, not charred completely, only bits on the ends, and minimal fat pieces. I mean only on the edges so as not to compromise the flavor. I haven’t even bitten into it at this point. I’m just inspecting. HOLY COW! They are fall-off-the-bone-with-no-effort-at-all tender. The meat’s flavor is smoky but with nice sweet undertones. I just became a fan of ribs thanks to Brookstreet. And don’t just take my word for it – I had two rib-eating boys with me that pigged out on them due to their “spectacularness.” I had to taste the sliced beef. The leanness and beautiful color was screaming my name on the meat plate. I also took the liberty of stealing some sausage and pulled chicken. A toasted slice of white bread and some BBQ sauce and I was set. Already impressed by the ribs, this plate had a lot to live up to. And by golly, it delivered! The sauce is made daily with fresh Serrano peppers and garlic (the only two ingredients

Beef potato with butter, sour cream, bacon, chives and cheese could get out of the owner) so the spice level varies daily. Today it had a great kick. It’s got some vinegar which I love so I was dipping everything into the sauce. From the slow smoked (over hickory wood) beef to the toast, it tastes great on everything. All the meats were tender and surprisingly moist. Nothing was dry or tough to eat. You really need to taste the meat alone to enjoy its flavor; then add some BBQ sauce to taste the quality. I can’t forget the sides! I couldn’t get enough to the potato casserole, sweet potato fries and fried okra. The potato casserole was surprisingly lighter than I had imagined. Usually, I think casserole and cheese, heavy cream, richness jump into my mind. This was like a baked potato was transferred from the potato into a baking dish. The potato is served without all of that except for a bit of the standard baked potato garnish on top. So cheese, bacon bits and chives are all mixed into each bite. For sweet potato fries and fried okra, the grease was minimal. Both maintained their crispness throughout the meal and the bite-size pieces were conducive to just popping in a few bites. In my opinion, you definitely have to put Brookstreet BBQ into your BBQ lineup. The meats are the best cuts; the slow smoked over hickory wood method really shines on flavor. And the sauce, well, they just keep it simple. And simple equals perfection in my BBQ-loving mind. april 10 | www.002mag.com .67

EVENT REALCITY: LITERACY WHY FUNDRAISER TO BENEFIT YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTER WHERE 13 CELSIUS WHEN FEBRUARY 18 Over 200 big kids at heart played and partied while raising funds and futures for disadvantaged youths in Houston’s Greater Fifth Ward. 13 Celsius was nostalgically transformed into a retro arcade. A swanky jazz bar unfolded indoors, complete with a perfectly paired assortment of wine, beer, gourmet meats and delicious cheeses. The sophisticated and soulful sound of Kristine Mills provided a perfect jazzy vibe. Outdoors, a tented playroom inspired a return to youthful pursuits with games such as pinball machines, Jenga, Whac-A-Mole and classic ’80’s Nintendo favorites. DJ Freestyle Steve rocked the house with classic tunes.

Located street level at the Commerce Towers, this pizza spot will have you changing every notion you had about Indian food. The couple of times I had Indian food it was like a bomb in my belly and the aftertaste lingered all day. Thus began my exclusion of Indian food from my diet. THEN VIRAL PATEL, FOUNDER OF BOMBAY PIZZA CO., HAD ME REASSESSING THOSE FEELINGS. The idea behind his concept was to introduce Indian influences in a type of cuisine people were already comfortable with – Italian. I have to admit, in the beginning I couldn’t wrap my head around it; then I went, I tasted and it conquered. I went during lunch and from the crowd size, my mind was put at ease. If this many people enjoy, there is no way it can be scary. 35-40% of business is repeat costumers. We split the Saag Paneer, Sonu’s Rita and the slice of the day. Each pizza is a creation of dough and nan bread toasted thin with sprinkles of sesame seed on the crust. I loved this thin crispy version of “pizza dough.” The Saag Paneer was layered in spiced greens, Paneer, Fontina, goat cheese and mozzarella. A surprising light concoction. The Sonu’s Rita is their version of the Margherita pizza, with basil, tomatoes, Paneer, mozzarella, cilantro chutney and Bombay Pizza Sauce. These few tweaks between the cilantro chutney and dough produce a light but flavorful twist without compromising a classic. Our slice of the day was a curried veggie topped medley. The curry wasn’t overwhelming and little notes of sweetness perfumed each bite. The meal was a very manageable, refreshing reintroduction of Indian food to my palette.

A new Mexican grill is upon is. In an area surrounded by Vietnamese cuisine, this might be the “it” thing that the block needs. We started with a taste of a margarita. Not your normal margarita though. Our waiter, William, introduced us to this unique version made with pineapple-infused tequila and freshsqueezed lime juice. Sounds weird, but these two twists make all the difference in the world. It’s deceptively light and refreshing – it has to be dangerous. There’s no sweet aftertaste that lingers and the tequila is unrecognizable. Even the scent is gone! Not sure if this version is on the menu but it’s worth asking. Other notable twists on classics include their Ratones and enchiladas. Usually, with a Ratone, you are served grilled shrimp with jalapeno cheese all wrapped in bacon. Here, they place jumbo shrimp inside a pickled jalapeno with manchego cheese all wrapped in smoked apple bacon and then tempura fried, served atop greens with a chipotle remoulade dip on the side. The different flavors with the pickled jalapeno and manchego blend quite nicely. I was thoroughly delighted with their beef fajita enchiladas. Everywhere I’ve been they are served with a cumin-red pepper sauce. I don’t think I’ve EVER had that sauce in my life on any Mexican dish. AT HABANEROS, CHEF POLO USES A ROASTED TOMATO SALSA THAT TASTES LIKE IT WAS JUST BLENDED. I’ve seen my grandmother, mother, every Mexican woman I know make this type of sauce. The refried beans are quite possibly THE most authentic I’ve tasted. They taste like they were just scooped out of the “cazuela.” (That’s pot in Spanish.) In one lunch, I was reminded of just how delicious authenticity could be.
YAO’S SECOND VENTURE INTO THE HOUSTON PAVILIONS PROVES TO BE A GREAT MOVE. With Mexican food, tapas, steak and seafood specialty chains, a Chinese spot was needed. Boasting a sushi bar at the entrance, a long space with red and black being the color theme covering everything from tables to booths. We opted for a table that has Yao’s emblazoned in the middle. We started with a tuna tartar with wonton crisps. In the mixture of tuna are avocado slices, tomato and, for cilantrophobes, there is cilantro but the leaves are big and can easily be pulled out. It was very fresh and the texture of the tuna with the crispy wonton chip was a perfect balance. We ordered the beef and broccoli and kung pao shrimp for entrées with brown rice on the side. Served piping hot with a little rice container on the side, you can probably share one of these, just double up on rice. Both had a sufficient amount of meat/shrimp in proportion to the vegetables and the flavor was fresh. It didn’t have that lingering flavor that Chinese can sometimes have. For dessert we ordered the crème brulée. Offbeat for a Chinese restaurant, yes, but their vanilla bean version is definitely worth leaving some space for dessert.

MIKE MOE OF BELTWAY
8 RECORDS
AFTER 10 ACTIVE YEARS IN A VERY TRANSITIONAL PERIOD IN HOUSTON’S LENGTHY RAP MUSIC HISTORY, BELTWAY 8 RECORDS MOGUL MIKE MOE HAS DECIDED TO RETIRE. WHY? I HAD TO ASK…
STRAIGHT TO IT – ARE YOU REALLY RETIRING? Yep. I spent 10 years in it, and I just realized I need to build a foundation business-wise on my own back, not on an artist’s back. Because artists, pretty much, they’re fickle. One day they’re like this; one day they’re like that, I mean… I can’t base my future on how another person feels, so I decided to go into two different businesses. One of them is Moe’s Family Smoked Ribs and another one, I wrote a book called Cheat to Save Your Marriage. WHAT’S MOE’S FAMILY RIBS? IS THAT A FAMILY RECIPE? Well, I been cookin’ ribs for a long time, and somebody asked me, ‘man, you need to sell those.’ And I had been lookin’ for something else to do to get out the music business and the light went off ‘you know what – I can sell these ribs!’ And that’s what I did. I started sellin’ ribs and packaging up my family secret sauce, started sellin’ them, started catering folks and then people just started ordering up slabs and I bought a pit – I had a big pit custom-made. It’s been going pretty good. I haven’t opened up an actual restaurant yet, but I’m about to buy some property on the main drag on the northwest side and hope to have a spot up there. SO DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING PLANNED FOR YOUR SORT OF GOING AWAY FROM MUSIC? ARE YOU GOING TO EXIT MUSIC COMPLETELY, YOU THINK? I don’t… I know eventually I wanna come back. I know right now what I really wanna do is kind of consulting and I’ll still sell my catalog stuff but the only way I’ll come back is… I do it as a hobby and not as a living. I want to do it just for a hobby. I think for the most part my whole reason for getting’ in the business was to help young guys get into business for 76. april 10 | www.002mag.com
themselves, whether they be rappers or whatever the case is. It worked out, and then there was ups and downs with it pretty much, but you know after doin’ it for so long and then a lot of people didn’t just get the idea and the concept. It’s like ‘damn, what am I really in this for?’ 10, 11 YEARS AGO – DID YOU GET INTO IT THEN AS A HOBBY OR DID YOU HAVE THAT BUSINESS SENSE IN MIND ALREADY? I intentionally got into it as a business. I was laid off in ’99… YOU HAD LIKE A REAL JOB, LIKE A SERIOUS FULLTIME JOB, RIGHT? Back then I was working at Bettis Actuator Control Valve Company. I was a warehouse manager. I had been there for 6, 7 years or so. And they laid me off and I took the unemployment money and built a studio and bought a record store. AND THAT WAS IN PRAIRIE VIEW? That was in Prairie View. SO WERE THE ARTISTS YOU WERE WORKING WITH THEN LOCATED IN PRAIRIE VIEW? OBVIOUSLY SOME OF THE ARTISTS WERE IN HOUSTON… Yeah, for the most part when we was in Prairie View, we was strictly dealin’ with the Beltway 8 Boyz. And then… but we were doing a bunch of production stuff as far as slowed and chopped albums for pretty much everybody in Houston. And so that was kind of my connection. But the Prairie View situation, it was great because – I’ve always been the kind of person… I like the music industry, but I don’t wanna be in it. I don’t want to be in the fast lane or whatever the case is. I want to run at my pace and Prairie
View’s kind of like the ideal spot where… if you come to up Prairie View, that means you wanted to do business; if you didn’t come, you wasn’t tryin’ to do any business. TELL ME ABOUT THE BOOK. The book is called “Cheat to Save Your Marriage,” and it’s a book about people that are married and they’re cheating their marriages. And they pretty much wanna stay married but it’s just that the spouse is not doing a certain thing that they need. One guy in my book – he wanted his wife to be freaky in bed. It just wasn’t her. You know, he communicated to her and she still… you couldn’t bring it out of her. So he would end up going to a whorehouse, getting’ his rocks off, you know, his freaky side and come back home and everything’s fine and dandy. It saved his marriage. Other people, money-wise, one woman was short on money, she had another man who was takin’ care of her and her husband’s bills, and you know, she was sleepin’ with him or whatever the case is, and it saved their marriage. It’s a book that’s based on people that are married, and they’re finding different reasons to cheat in order to save their marriage. SO HOW DID YOU GET THE STORIES? Well, I started going around asking people. I started with people I knew, telling them I was writing this book, and I told them the title and the title grabbed them right away. For the most part, the people that told their story, it was almost like a confession. They confessed and it was like they got it off they chest, like, ‘I been wantin’ to tell somebody this story…’

NOUVEAU ANTIQUE ART BAR | HOUSTON HANGOUT MAKES THE ARTS THEIR CRAFT
2913 main st., houston, tx 77002 | nouveau_art_bar@yahoo.com | www.art-bar.net
remember it like it was yesterday. Dad couldn’t take me fishing, so the old lady was dragging me antique shopping. She told me before we stepped foot in the dainty little boutique not to touch anything or go running off or I wouldn’t get the ice cream she had promised or get to watch cartoons or play video games that Saturday morning. Inside, my pulse quickened in a panic as I was hit with an avalanche of shiny knick-knacks and sparkly knobs, figurines and fine china. Eventually, no longer able to fight the urge of rolling something across the floor or putting something in my mouth, I took my hands from my pockets. That’s when I felt her hot hand slap the back of my head and as I let out a surprised yelp I flailed into a case of crystal Faberge knockoffs, knocking a half dozen to the floor. Shocked, I stared slack jawed at her before throwing the quintessential fit. My girlfriend had learned to never take me antique shopping again. At Nouveau Antique Art Bar on 2913 Main St. I’m a little better behaved, but am no less struck by the wonder of things way too pretty for me to touch. Sure, the exterior with its festively lit trees and quaintly painted façade is nice and all, but getting down to brass tacks, it’s just a 4,500sf concrete shoebox with great parking. The true spectacle behind the buzz at Nouveau is what lies inside. Bedecked with one of the largest, privately owned collections of Tiffany lamps, the handmade orbs poke out from every crevice like a sea of vibrant, multihued jellyfish. They cast shards of lamplight over patrons and richly stained antique furniture from every angle. Like a 3am burrito, what appears to be a plain-Jane layout from the outside opens into a multilayered labyrinth of tasteful design inside. Nouveau maintains pub attitude up front, but wrapped around an aged, oaken bar evocative of a Victorian French bordello, guests find themselves in what feels like a string of posh living rooms.
celebration of the arts in Houston, Nouveau patrons can redeem ballet, theatre, art museum, opera and symphony ticket stubs for drinks at the bar. Quickly becoming known as a place to party progressively, Nouveau takes a unique approach to its evening entertainment. In a nutshell, if you get in early and are having some serious convo with the ample staff or your buds from work, DJ Whatshisname isn’t going to crush your eardrums like a grape just to “get the party started.” They let the crowd dictate the intensity of the evening. Also, for an off-the-beaten-path date night, Nouveau’s Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald Wednesday Lounge Night is hard to pass up. So after a taxing day out with the old lady doing a lot of unforeseen running and pretending not to understand English when confronted by shop owners using words like “damages” and “pay for” and “maniac,” evidently I owe her a nice date night. I know, I know – I don’t understand it either. Anyway though, I figure that my best strategy is to start anew – at Nouveau.
As posh as the surroundings feel, the dress code is creative and casual. The crowd rides a quirky continuum that includes anything from young, artsy hipsters looking to get the party started to straightlaced corporate execs in button-downs and blazers looking to get the deal closed. They gather under the stained glass of the lamps like moths to a flame. Moths that appreciate a good selection of inexpensive drinks served up fast and friendly, that is. Open Monday through Saturday, Nouveau knocks a dollar off drinks from 4 to 9. In addition to a happy hour worth getting excited about, and in an unabashed april 10 | www.002mag.com .77

Restaurateurs, club/bar owners, pubbers, etc., if there is a special event or something you would like the public to know about, email me at bvalencia@002mag.com and I will help spread the word for you. See you out!
Happy April! There will be nothing wedding related today, kids. I figured since it’s pretty much everywhere else, we’ll keep this strictly SIPCODE business. I can’t get enough of these beautiful sunny days we’ve been experiencing. It’s days like these that my mind draws a blank on restaurants that have patios. There’s still a slight chill in the air although the sun’s beams are sunburn-worthy so an umbrella option is a must. Learned about this in Galveston this past weekend when I got a really “cool” racer-back tan on the right side of my body. I didn’t experience much patio dining this month but I did discover some new gems, revisited an old favorite and learned what it’s like to watch movies luxe style. Enjoy this beautiful weather and see you next month! CANOPY- 3939 Montrose 713.528.6848 www.canopyhouston.com I LOVE brunch! And I have to admit, I can’t remember all the places that offer it. I wake up and want brunch. My only option is to hit the road and hope wherever I stop is still serving. Luckily, on this Saturday, Canopy caught my eye. The décor is very eco-chic. Sun beams in through the windows. A large wooden sculpture hangs overhead in the dining room and an enlarged photograph of a tree covers the wall behind the bar as well as a wall in the dining room. Wooden tables with green tops and wooden chairs add to the organic nature. All the tables outside were taken and it seemed the dining room was full as well, so we sat in a little table in the bar right by the window. This was as close to outside as we could get without a wait. I ordered the mushroom, goat cheese scramble and some of the artisan chocolate croissants made in house. The scramble came out first with fresh fruit and their crispy potatoes on the side. My scramble was perfect. The warmth of the eggs melted the cheese into every nook. Each bite with egg, mushroom, cheese and green onion (sprinkled on the top) was delicious. My 3 mini chocolate croissants arrived served atop a doily close to the end of my meal. Each crispy, warm bite was the “icing on the cake” to an already perfect meal. ARCODORO RISTORANTE ITALIANO- 5000 Westheimer Road 713.621.6888 One of my old favorites never ceases to deliver. It has been a LONG time since I’ve been. Naturally, I have to order my favorite, the four cheese pasta! Thankfully a girlfriend of mine wanted to split it. Last thing I want to do is knock out a whole
80. april 10 | www.002mag.com
plate of this delicious goodness. Eaters remorse and food “coma” go hand in hand. We also split an arcodoro salad to add a bit of greens. Ever since I went to Paris last year, I have this habit of putting my salad on top of my pasta and eating it together. It doesn’t work with all pastas. Not an idea for spaghetti. This combo was ideal. I got to eat my cheesy yummy bowtie pasta with a little bit of greens to make me feel like it was a healthier twist on one of their classics. EDDIE V’S- 12848 Queensbury Lane 832.200.2380 www.eddiev.com After catching a 7:40pm showing at Studio Movie Grill, we stopped in at their bar for a taste of their seafood delicacy. The dimly lit bar has lush booth seating and high bar seating with live piano bar music. Since we were a group of eight, we sat at a high bar table. After ordering a round of drinks we perused the menu. It was a little hard to read since the lighting was that dim. My sister, having been previously, suggested we order the “tower” instead of going through the whole menu. We ordered two to accommodate us all. The tower came with jumbo shrimp, oysters and crab claws on two tiers and fixings in the middle. They are not kidding when they say jumbo shrimp. They’re huge and “meaty.” It’s absolute perfection. We ordered some bread for extra stuffing. Served hot, we cut butter and slipped into each slice before tearing into it. I’m not an oyster fan unless they’re rockefeller, but the boy and girls cleaned up. Not one was left. It was the ideal amount of food after having some popcorn during the movie. If you don’t want to eat at the theatre (see below), save your appetite and drop in for some quality dining. STUDIO MOVIE GRILL- 805 Town and Country Village 713.461.4405 www.studiomoviegrill.com Speaking of movies, this is my new-found favorite way to watch movies. I love the comfort of being able to watch a movie, drink an adult beverage and dine all in
one package. The comfortable seating isn’t a bad perk either. I wasn’t sold the first time I visited Studio Movie Grill but on this visit one feature in particular wowed me. Even before I got to the theatre. On their website you can purchase tickets and reserve your seating. It’s a feature called “adult weekend” when you click on the show times icon on the main page. The total for two tickets comes out to about $50 but included in that bundle are two vouchers for $12 toward your food and beverage. Not only do you get the voucher but you also get to pick your seats for the movie online and they are reserved for you the night of. No fighting for seats or waiting in lines when you get there. We waited at the bar and then cruised through the ropes with several minutes to spare to get to our seats and place orders before the lights went down. It’s ingenious for a movie night with friends or a date!

cd reviews By Lance Scott Walker
BURZUM Belus (Indie Europe/Zoom) While most convicted murderers may well never be forgiven for their crimes, it would certainly seem as if Varg Vikernes has been. After murdering fellow black metal dignitary Euronymous (of the band Mayhem) in 1994 and then serving a prison term lasting 15 years, he has emerged with an almost triumphant musical statement. For context, Burzum made black metal records when black metal was in its relative infancy. After being in prison a few years (the prison system in Norway is notoriously lenient) he began making ambient records under the same name; still with the black metal vibe, just all on synthesizers with no guitars or drums. And he made it work. 1999’s Hli›skjálf, although not regularly accredited in ambient circles, should be considered one of the finest of the genre. But in that (exclusion), he created a genre all his own. Upon his release from prison, the question bugging most was exactly which direction he would venture musically. The answer is both. Belus is not only a balance of the two genres in which Vikernes has delved in his career, it is a synthesis. The intro to the album would hint at another ambient platter, and then it explodes and he’s back to square one with a lot better production and a hell of a lot more gutter to the screech he was perfecting before any of us knew what black metal was. And maybe now he’s out to redefine what he defined in the first place, introducing an element which, though present, is never audible in black metal: bass guitar. BLUNT MECHANIC World Record (Barsuk) Just when you think Ben Barnett (Kind of Like Spitting, The Thermals) is done, or that you may never hear from him again, his bald head bobs back up above the water. Whether the reason for that is the same reason he would note or what the listening public may perceive doesn’t matter. The fact is that, for better or worse, Barnett’s career has yet to peak. Kind of Like Spitting (his long-running solo venture) has some fantastic songs; the first Thermals record, on which he plays guitar, is also brilliant. But where is his? His opus, his masterpiece? This might not be it, either, but it is fully a step in that direction. “Breaking up” his solo act was a wise choice. One reason is that this is more filled out than anything Barnett has done. The “solo” mentality is gone. This is a full band, with big, roomy drums, and the guitars are rich – not just in sound but in the choice of chords and the sexiness in the rhythmic approach. Sexiness. Ben Barnett makes a record that sounds a little sexy? Never! But he did. Just ignore the cover. JOANNA NEWSOM Have One On Me (Drag City) Some records get so much press that it almost feels like a waste of space to offer up another review of the work. Brilliant. Moving… the descriptions run circles around themselves, slapping high fives… you either get it or you don’t. Her voice! And then maybe you don’t, or you get it and you don’t really like it. Or really don’t like it. Like Patti Smith… I appreciate it, but it does nothing and goes nowhere for me. At least you got a different review this time.
