I
f you haven’t noticed, it’s hot, humid and frankly unbearable this summer, which makes functioning quite difficult. The last thing I want to do is get outside and move, but I love to exercise outside! So, I’ve been trying to get runs in early or later CARLA VALENCIA DE MARTINEZ at night and sprinkling bike rides in the mix as well. I’ve found I have to mix it up, which is shocking coming from the woman who swore by yoga only!
For this issue we took on the task of checking out new fitness routines available around town – check it out on page 38. And you couldn’t have missed our beautifully fit cover gal, Cari Shoemate! Read all about how she kicks butt on page 48. We’ve also got a few pages of active beauty products, clothes and more. So what are you waiting for? Start reading and get inspired to move. On a serious note, in our July issue we published an article, Wise Guy Tim Moloney’s “Gypped,” without thinking about its consequences, and we now owe all of our readers an apology. We respect Tim for his wit and his writing ability, but this column was written too hastily and too emotionally after he was duped by off-the-street car repairmen. Racist remarks, harassment, sexist remarks, ageism prejudices, religious intolerance, etc., hurt us all. As editors we accepted this piece too hastily, not objecting immediately and strongly at the slur inferred. Shame on all of us. Including the scam artists. For information on the Roma people and the persecution of them even today we direct you to www.radoc.net, The University of Texas Romani Archives and Documentation Center.

The Arts of the Islamic World Gala was a huge success, raising more than $600,000 that will go directly toward the museum’s Islamic World department. Also benefitting the department is a beautiful Egyptian brass basin (valued at nearly a quarter-million dollars!), donated on behalf of the late Kazem Kooros by his son Vahid Kooros and Vahid’s wife Cathy.

Objects of Devotion, opening August 13, explores the ways in which art supported religious practice in different times and places. Objects ranging from small-scale works of personal nature, such as Byzantine pilgrim ampoule, to a Maya vessel used in ninth-century chocolate drinking rituals, to architectural sculpture, including a thirteenth-century Japanese Shinto shrine figure, allow us to consider the various roles to which objects are put in the service of establishing, reinforcing and refining spiritual beliefs. 2. housTon CenTer for PhoTograPhy www.hcponline.org
28th Annual Juried Membership Exhibition, on view thru August 22, 2010, highlights the photographs of its national and international members. This group exhibition of their work sparkles with talent from Texas and beyond. The styles and formats run the full gamut, but the quality of the work never waivers. 3. The roThko ChaPel www.rothkochapel.org
An intimate sanctuary available to people of every belief, this modern meditative environment was inspired by the paintings of American abstract expressionist Mark Rothko. Intimate in scale, the Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum is the repository of the only intact Byzantine frescoes of this size and importance in the Western Hemisphere. It’s also a manifestation of the redemptive power of art: The chapel was expressly built to house 13-century Byzantine frescoes that had been looted from their original home in a small chapel in Lysi, Cyprus. 5. housTon CenTer for ConTeMPorary CrafT www.crafthouston.org

An Austin-based collective collecting consortium, in cooperation with Lawndale Art Center, is pleased to announce the first and only viewing of their most cherished artifact. Salvaged from the Gulf of Mexico inside the Chicxulub Crater, this PreKhormusan monument resembles that of a giant head. Examining Restitution: The Bielitz Collection, on view thru August 31, 2010. On Nov. 9-10, 1938, now memorialized as Kristallnacht or the “Night of Broken Glass,” more than 200 synagogues were destroyed and 7,500 Jewish businesses were looted throughout Germany and Austria. More than 30,000 Jewish men were sent to concentration camps. The Steiner family escaped the violence of this night, but their heirs would spend the next 60 years trying to win restitution for their lost property. WILLIAM PERKINS | OF LLEJU PRODUCTIONS www.lleju.com
Interview by Lance Scott Walker Photography by Cody Bess
AFTER MAKING HIS MILLIONS IN ENERGY TRADING IN THE BAYOU CITY, BILL PERKINS DECIDED TO INVEST IN FILM. TWO YEARS LATER, LLEJU PRODUCTIONS IS IN FULL SWING, WITH A NUMBER OF PROJECTS UNDER THEIR BELT AND SEVERAL ON THE WAY JUST THIS YEAR. WHAT WAS IT THAT MADE YOU THINK YOU COULD MAKE A FILM PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION COMPANY WORK IN HOUSTON? Stupidity? I would say… serendipity? Well, I kind of stumbled into it, piece by piece. There was a guy called Michael Manshel who made a movie for a million dollars called “Better Luck Tomorrow” that’s distributed by MTV Films. I saw it and I was like ‘wow, that looks like fun – I could lose a million dollars; lemme try it.’ So obviously, we got into making movies and you know you want to explore your artistic and creative side and the business side is always kind of tagging along. Like how can I make this better? How can I do this inhouse? And it just kind of grew. So it was an attempt at trying HOW INVOLVED DO YOU GET WITH THE PROJECTS? IS THERE ANY SAY IN WHAT ACTORS ARE USED, something different and just be creative, and then realizing WHAT ENDS UP ON THE SOUNDTRACK? ‘well, why do I have to do this?’ And with the internet, with the When I first started, I was just kind of the jackass with the money, the equity. And everybody’s nice to you on ability to post videos online and communicate with the edit the set, but the more I got involved, the more I learned. I’m not doing this to get rich, I’m doing this to be room and reduce the amount of time it takes I felt like we’d be involved. So now we’re in the stage where if we’re financing, I’m putting together the pieces and I have say and okay in Houston. I’m very involved in a collaborative way. A final say type of way. Some people will call me and they’re like ‘I DID YOU HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT THE PHONETICS OF THE NAME BEING SO CLOSE TO YAHOO? Yeah, but we were so irreverent and capricious about it; we take what we do seriously, but we don’t take ourselves seriously, so we were like ‘we’re a bunch of ya-hoos and we’ll keep it that way.’ We’ll just keep it that way. We’re not Garden Rock or Summit or whatever, a big name. We just thought it would be fun. We’re mostly trying to enjoy what we’re doing and create what I call a sustainable hobby. Flat, negative 5% to plus 5% would be great for us, but I made my money doing something and I’m trying to transfer my money in order to learn a different skill set. So we’re just trying to be sustainable. We’re not trying to hit a home run. ARE YOU ACQUIRING RIGHTS PROJECT-BY-PROJECT OR ARE YOU SORT OF BUILDING UP A LIBRARY OF TITLES FROM WHICH TO CHOOSE? It’s a project-by-project basis, but when I go to these people to inquire about these rights, they want to know what I’m gonna do with their project. There’s a lot of emotional attachment in these things that people create, so I want to make sure that I’m totally transparent with them that I’m going to give it the old college try in getting people to view their work. Now we’re on a project-by-project basis, and when we feel like we’ve got enough action in the distribution market and we’ve got enough relationships with people that we can actually get the products out to people, we’ll start doing more wholesale stuff. But right now it’s project-by-project.
22. august 10 | www.002mag.com
have a project,’ and I’ll say, ‘Listen: I’m not investing in bakeries. I like baking cakes. So don’t confuse my desire to bake cakes with my desire to invest in a bakery.’ And they get it! They’re like ‘okay, you want to make the cupcake, you want to mix the dough…’ I’m not in this necessarily to be profitable, support my life, send my kids to college. I’m doing this for other reasons, but even though I’m doing this for other reasons, don’t confuse that with me wanting to lose just a whole bunch of money. I want to be smart about it. WHAT’S THE MOST SURPRISING HAT YOU’VE HAD TO PUT ON THROUGH THESE LAST TWO YEARS? Babysitter? Babysitter/negotiator. That’s the most surprising thing, is that you’re on the set and you know the director and you know the people. There’re all kinds of personalities and opinions, hierarchies and egos… I had to go from my normal trader role of ‘I don’t give a damn…’ to bringing people together. I was surprised that I’ve had to do it, and surprised that I had it.
THE ZERO IS WHAT YOU HAVE IN PRODUCTION NEXT, THEN? Yeah, we just got the second draft of the script, and we’re looking to start attaching the elements, putting the elements together. Actually the two are kind of neck and neck – that and The Four Kings of Ruin, directed by Chad St. John. DO YOU HAVE PLANS IN THE FUTURE TO BRING ANY PRODUCTION TO HOUSTON? I would love to, except for the cost. I do have plans, and I have been actively, actively looking for a micro budget script, which would be a sub-million dollar movie. When you’re shooting sub-million, the transportation factor outweighs any benefits that any states would offer, even if you’re on a small budget. So I would love to, but the 50 states are extremely competitive with the rebates they give for the crew and filming in their state. But there’s talent here! Houston has more theater seats than New York City, and we’ve got a lot of talent here and we have a lot of local actors, what they call ‘day players,’ that would come in and pick up some buzz. Houston would be a great place for the film industry to flourish. Much the way Austin has a kind of film industry going on there with the festival. It’s just hard for an independent to cut away 30% of their budget. SO SOMEONE NEEDS TO WRITE A SCRIPT SET IN HOUSTON. I just haven’t found one that I like yet, but it would be excellent in Houston. We have the talent here. It would be awesome.

nonprofit By Sarah Gajkowski-Hill
ANNA MARIA GARZA HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN GIRL BANDS SINCE SHE WAS SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD, BEGAN BOOKING SHOWS SOON AFTER, AND IS PROMINENTLY INVOLVED WITH THE ORGANIZATION “HANDS UP HOUSTON,” THE BIGGEST INDEPENDENT BOOKING COLLECTIVE IN HOUSTON. “The doors for young women in rock have been opened, knocked down…but we’re not walking through them,” Anna Maria earnestly laments. This lack of initiative in teaching young girls rock music is an affront she takes personally. It was because of this that one evening, Garza and her fellow bandmates were viewing the documentary Girls Rock at the Angelika Film Center. Soon after, she and other like-minded women had started a grassroots organization to promote rock bands for young girls – a feat which requires a great deal of encouragement and practical instruction. A similar template as the Portland-based rock camp used in the film was planned for Houston and the first summer installment has its capacity for campers met. The need for a girls rock camp in the area turned out to be a pressing one, and the organizers couldn’t be more excited to begin camp August 9-13 at the Moores School of Music on the University of Houston campus. Girl bands do exist and Garza admits that there are many women to emulate in the music business, however many of these artists are of the acoustic singer/songwriter ilk. Girls are simply not being taught rock instruments as often as they are encouraged to join school bands and orchestras. Girls Rock Camp Houston has assembled a great amount of donated instruments from local music stores and personal collections – from mini electric guitars to drum sets – and they have ambitious songstresses to teach the girls. Each camper will join a band (divided up by age group) and, after writing an original song, will play it at a concert at Walters on Washington at the culmination of the camp. The organization, which is in the process of getting their nonprofit status, is still looking for female musicians to give of their time and talent. Girls Rock Camp is relying 100% on volunteers. Anna Maria and her small staff will have musical instrument and songwriting instruction in the mornings. Much like a language immersion, the girls will live the rock experience with the help of local music scene-sters such as April Patrick, the bass player of the “Guitars,” and Rosa Guerrero, KTRU DJ and member of the band “Ditchwater.” The afternoon will boast workshops such as silkscreening, where the girls will explore the creation of logos, rock climbing to promote self-confidence and team-building and a class in producing fan-zines. The camp is bound to grow exponentially, having hit maximum capacity before the first week of
24. august 10 | www.002mag.com
being open for enrollment. Students attending are not only from Houston proper, but also from every surrounding suburb and city. Parents have even requested that the age requirement be lowered so that their daughters can join (this summer the campers must be between the ages of 8 and 18.) It looks like girls will be rocking Houston for many summers to come. TO FIND OUT MORE, VISIT WWW.GIRLSROCKHOUSTON.ORG FOR MORE INFORMATION ON VOLUNTEERING. SCREEN DANCING I’ve been fascinated by the life of former Houston Ballet dancer Li Cunxin ever since I heard him speak when touting his bestselling autobiography, Mao’s Last Dancer, a few years back. Lucky for us, that book inspired a movie of the same title, opening August 20 at Landmark River Oaks Theatre (www.landmarktheatres.com). It’s the American dream with a Chinese socialist spin and a little Baryshnikov thrown in: Li is plucked from poverty to attend Madame Mao’s Beijing Dance Academy after which he is discovered by former Houston Ballet Artistic Director Ben Stevenson. Li dances with our ballet troupe for 16 years and, upon marrying an American dancer, enters into a struggle with Chinese authorities who wanted to force him to return to China. The dancer and his family are allowed to stay, thanks to Houston immigration attorney Charles C. Foster (played by Kyle MacLachlan). Meet Li in person at the Junior League of Houston on Sunday, August 1, 4pm for a special book signing event. Speaking of dancing, the Contemporary Arts Museum (www.camh.org) has a new exhibition dedicated to dance and film, “Dance with Camera,” on view August 7 through October 17. The show features film, video and still photography and explores the work of a group of artists and dancers who make choreography for the camera. SCIENCE FILMS & MORE The Houston Museum of Natural Science (www.hmns.org) continues their program of interesting science films with Hubble 3D; Dolphins & Whales 3D; and Wild Ocean 3D. The Hubble film was created by the award-winning IMAX® Space Team and captures the troubled yet amazing and groundbreaking voyage of the Hubble Telescope. Nature is seen up close in the other films: Dolphins & Whales takes viewers from the dazzling coral reefs of the Bahamas to the warm depths of the waters of the exotic Kingdom of Tonga for a close encounter with the surviving tribes of the ocean while Wild Oceans 3D is
an adventure to the Kwazulu-Natal Coast in the oceans of South Africa. On other screens, the “Summer Israeli Film Series” wraps up this month with Five Hours from Paris (8/18, 7:30pm) at the JCC Houston (www.jcchouston.org), and the Aurora Picture Show (www.aurorapictureshow.org) helps you relive your awkward teens with Skip Elsheimer and his “Prom Date with the A/V Geeks” program, which promises a trip down memory lane with 16mm film (8/28, 7pm, Eldorado Ballroom). The following day, APS is hosting a video salon on 16mm film with Skip and fellow collector/artist Luke Savisky at 1pm, also at the Ballroom. The discussion will focus on techniques for presenting and archiving 16mm films. Elsheimer is the founder of A/V Geeks and the owner of a “pool of about 18,000 of the strangest films known to man.” BUT WAIT, THERE’S EVEN MORE… The Angelika Film Center (www.angelikafilmcenter.com) is opening The Concert and Disappearance of Alice Creed (8/6); The Dry Land; Eat Pray Love; Farewell; and Princess Kaiulani (8/13); Cairo Time and Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child (8/20); and Life During Wartime (8/27). DiverseWorks (www.diverseworks.org) is host to the Aurora Picture Show program, “Fragments” (8/13, 7pm) and they are encouraging you to have your cell phones on during the screening! Filmmaker Darrin Martin will be in attendance; he’s a Bay Area artist whose work loosely examines how technologies are used in an attempt to measure and augment our daily perceptions. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (www.mfah.org) continues their family summer matinees with Waking Sleeping Beauty (8/4, 11am & 2pm) and Mary Poppins (8/11, 11am & 2pm) and will have a special screening of the Japanese film House/Hausu (8/27 & 8/28, 7pm and 8/29, 5pm). The film has been described as “a hallucinatory head trip about a schoolgirl who travels with six classmates to her ailing aunt’s house only to come face to face with evil spirits, bloodthirsty pianos and a demonic housecat.” Coupled with The Last Exorcism, opening 8/27, these horror films will be sure to cool your blood! Coming to Rave Yorktown (www.ravemotionpictures.com) this month is Step Up 3-D (8/6); The Expendables; Scott Pilgrim vs. the World; and Eat Pray Love (8/13); The Switch; Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (8/20); and Takers (8/27).

Thrice Removed at Spacetaker Artist Resource Center, Opening Reception, August 28 @ 6pm A play on the phrase “twice removed” denoting familial relations through a system of “removals,” artist Lovie Olivia re-contextualizes this terminology to imply separation from African traditions and customs, male authority and heterosexual privilege in her solo show, Thrice Removed. The show explores the multi-dimensionality of women of African Diaspora in light of the challenges and joy associated with a hybridized presence. Part autobiographical-part objective, Olivia zeroes in on the complex histories of racism, sexism and classism in America which intersect for ‘thrice’ the barrier to equal opportunity. Her exhibition, influenced by recorded conversations, video footage, folklore and ancestral documents, redefines these selves outside conventional depictions in a celebration of identity. After almost three months of fun in the sun and sleeping in, kids are not only eager to reconnect with old friends, they are also looking forward to shopping for their new school supplies. Do you remember how exciting that was? It was so important to have the coolest backpack, the latest scented markers, the Hello Kitty pencil case, the metal TV-themed lunch box and the ever-so-popular Trapper Keeper. It’s funny how some things never change! Here are some of the latest back-to-school must-haves so your kiddos can be cool at school.

SUBJECT: SEAN O’KEEFE MENTOR: BARRY BLUMENTHAL THIS MONTH, BARRY BLUMENTHAL, A FINANCIAL ADVISOR AND A SKATER AT HEART, CATCHES SOME HEAT WITH EIGHT-YEAR-OLD ASPIRING SEAN O’KEEFE.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN SKATING? SEAN 4 years. BARRY 35 years. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO DO IT? BARRY It looked fun and I wanted to try it. SEAN ’Cause it’s hard. BARRY, SO TELL ME ABOUT PUSH AND WHAT IT’S DOING FOR HOUSTON? PUSH is Public Use Skatearks for Houston. It’s a grass roots organization of skateboarders, friends and family who came together to build the skate park. We’re one of the fundraising groups for the skateboarders who got the ball rolling to get this park started and then the Houston Parks Board took over. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO HELP THE PARK? Because I was a life-long skateboarder and wanted a place that was free for guys like Sean to hone their skills. And a really good one that would be challenging for the next 25-30 years. So we wanted to make sure that it was a really great park. The city had built some parks but we felt they were the equivalent of a putt-putt golf course, so all the skateboarders got involved with this park to make sure it was challenging. So maybe this guy might be the next Tony Hawk and he’s got a place to train. DO YOU HAVE FAVORITE MUSIC? SEAN Rap. BARRY Live music + rock and roll. DO YOU GUYS HAVE ANY TIPS? BARRY Just to have fun, ride around and go fast! SEAN I like the bowl. FAVORITE RESTAURANT OR PLACE TO HANG OUT? BARRY Boy, there’re so many great places; I like the Dragon Bowl. SEAN Roma’s Pizza. BARRY, DO YOU HAVE ADVICE FOR OTHER YOUNG SKATERS? Skateboard as much as you can! This park is free and one of the best in the world! SEAN, DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR OLD SKATERS? (Everyone laughs.) BARRY Those are good questions, Jackson! JACKSON Thanks. BARRY That’s good, I’ll say I knew when you were getting started, man! Don’t forget all the little people [laughs]. Have fun in Africa.

BrAd BLUME + sEAN rUdOLPH | TENNIS EXPRESS years in operation 2010 is our 10th anniversary 11026 Westheimer Rd., Houston TX 77042 | 713.435.4800 | www.tennisexpress.com Brad Blume | Sean Randolph
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE BUSINESS? We love tennis. It’s a lifetime sport. WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER SPORTS STORES? We know tennis! Tennis Express is a tennis specialty store with a team comprised of unique individuals that love and play the game. Our enthusiasm shows through our team members who are full of confidence and personality. Our associates love to have fun and enjoy nurturing the inner champion in each and every customer. Tennis Express was built on sharing knowledge with friends and customers. We’re Houston proud! There isn’t another store in the country like us. The depth of products we carry is unmatched with the best selection of top brands and expert service at fair prices. WHAT ARE YOU KNOWN FOR? Tennis Express – a candy store for tennis players!
HOW DO YOU STAY CURRENT AND ENSURE YOU CARRY THE THINGS YOUR CLIENTS NEED AS WELL AS THE THINGS THEY END UP WANTING? With over sixty team members who love tennis, we get plenty of input on new products, apparel and equipment to feature and carry. Our friendly customers are a huge asset because they love giving us feedback about different products. For instance, one customer asked us to carry “Yellowbox” shoes. She helped us choose the first order and brought in ten of her friends to shop once we received the sandals. Another customer asked us to carry Maui Jim Sunglasses and has not only purchased a few pairs, but recruited friends to purchase them too. We’re a big tennis family.
{
WHY TENNIS? It’s a lifetime sport. It’s a family sport. The real answer to that question lies in the John Isner (USA) and Nicolas Mahut (FRA) first round match at Wimbledon. Isner took the match winning the 5th set 70-68. There wasn’t a loser. That match was the greatest advertisement for the sport of tennis!
}
5 RULES OF TENNIS STYLE
1 Keep it classy and simple – dress your body type and follow the trends that complement and emphasize your assets.
2 Protect yourself from injury – keep your tennis gear current and up-to-date. 3 It’s not a style guideline, but be kind to your skin – always use a great sunscreen for your body and face on court.
4 Always have a pair of sunglasses handy – the perfect cherry on top of any outfit.
5 You can never go wrong with basics.

Tommy John Second Skin Collection – created by Tom Patterson in the search to find the perfect men’s t-shirt. Tom asked regular guys to share thoughts on t-shirts and paired the information with intense study on all the top brands which included turning shirts inside out, measuring proportions, comfort, flexibility. The result? Tailored Stretch Technology™ which ensures a better fit with no bunching. The shirts don’t yellow after one wear or shrink after one wash, and they fit like second skin. No, these aren’t Spanx for men, but they are essentially the perfect T. Available at Neiman Marcus.
Hip-T is genius and should have been around when crack was all we were seeing with all those lo-rise jeans. Luckily jeans have gone higher, but sometimes shirts are still a tad too short. Slip on a Hip-T in a variety of prints and solids to extend your too short tee and cover all your “assets” from top to bottom. Or wear around hips to diminish the muffin top. You can even pull it up around chest to cover up your front side while wearing a low-cut top. www.myhip-t.com

Les miLLs Body PumP™ I CONSIDER MYSELF A FIT PERSON WORKING OUT 4 TO 5 DAYS A WEEK ENDURING HELLISH SPX CLASSES. I’M NOT EASING THROUGH THE CLASS BY ANY MEANS BUT I MAKE IT THROUGH. Suffering, but in my mind, no pain, no gain. So when I heard about Body Pump, I did zero research. The last thing I wanted to do was freak myself out. I had heard from Sofia, our trusted, insane workout beast/photographer, that it was intense. Grueling even. That was about all I needed to hear. So when the moment of reckoning came, some of the staff was freaked thanks to that research. And the instructor, Justin, was a beast. Muscles everywhere, calm but energetic. That worried me. I knew I wasn’t going to be yelled at drill sergeant style but I also knew he must have an insane amount of endurance. I certainly was not disappointed. The class uses a step, a sticky mat (optional cushioning) and a bar with various weights from 1lb up to 5 plus to interchange at his instruction, a towel (for sweat because you will) and any other weight he might work into your particular class. Being that it was my first time, I stayed on the light side of the weights (and really, I’m weak). The class started with a warm-up
INTENSE and then from there it’s full-on hardcore until weight switching in between sets that some take for mini breaks. The idea was to begin with your larger muscles and end with the smallest. So legs it was! With a range of squats and lunges, I could barely hold myself up at the end of the set. Legs shaking we moved on to our backs. Constantly with knees bent didn’t help my legs stop quivering. From there it’s time to work out chests, then triceps while laying on the step. I thought, sweet relief! Wrong! My poor little tinker arms were noodles, shaking just trying to keep the bar with tiny 1lb weights over my body. Shoulders had me using those tiny 1lb weights in my hands in order to function through the set. Sweating and laughing due to the muscle fatigue I was feeling everywhere, Justin’s encouragement to power through helped me stay on track. I pushed through biceps, never changing my weight. (Remember, it’s my first class.) I was impressed at just how much people were lifting around me. I’m talking small girls lifting stacks. Obvious true hardcore Body Pumpers. Abs on the step and floor rounded out our session. Relieved to be on the floor stretching at the end, I felt spent. I burned 400 calories though and I knew tomorrow’s soreness was something I would hate but secretly enjoy. Work well spent, in my mind!
By Beatrice Valencia
It will probably take a few classes to master the routines, instructor lingo and finding your ideal weights. The class is quick paced, sound tracked from AC/DC to BEP. Great for muscle building and toning. You might even get a bit of cardio if you push it. OK, NOT GOING TO LIE ABOUT THIS ONE. IT WAS SUNDAY, JULY 11, WE WERE WATCHING THE FINAL WORLD CUP MATCH OF SPAIN VS. HOLLAND AT A FRIEND’S HOUSE AND I’M TELLING MY FRIEND PAYMAN ABOUT THIS SPORTS+FITNESS FEATURE. And Payman is, well, kind of ripped, so he tells me he’s been running and doing these kickboxing classes. Long story short, by the end of the match (and one too many sangrias) I agreed to check out the class the next day with him. Hoger is located in a small strip mall off Richmond across the street from Sam’s Boat (which isn’t a bad thing, ‘cause after that first class you just might want a drink). I showed up with a girlfriend (hey, I was scared!) and rightly so; I walked into the lion’s den. These people were not messing around. But before I get ahead of myself…
weren’t judging my skills. Sam Hoger, a.k.a. The Alaskan Assassin, is our professor. He seems nice and I relax, a little. [I later find out Hoger is the only mixed martial arts (MMA) instructor in town to have fought for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and continues to train and compete regularly. Plus, in MMA he holds a professional record of 8-4, and is the current Cruiser Weight Champion for the Urban Rumble Championship. He also holds belt titles for Art of War as well as Xtreme Combat Submission Championships. WHAT?!] So, the class starts and he runs through a quick warm-up with some sprinting, punching and stretching. Next we pair up with someone for some punching. I end up with Jessica Castillo, super petite and cute gal who happens to be one of those professional fighters I mentioned. My friend Catherine pairs up with Paola, who has a black eye given to her…by Jessica…I’m scared. But Jessica rocks and shows me the ropes Every time you get on or off the mat you bow You will be drenched in no time; Paola does the same for in respect, otherwise (if you get caught) they in sweat; this is seriously Catherine. And at first we’re doing the will make you drop and do 10 push-ups. The physical; more men than punches with the pros holding the class is done barefoot. (And, yes, it kind of punching pads, but then we switch smells, but again are you serious or do you women ratio; this is done bareand now I’m holding the pads for this pint-size pro and all I can want to take a gym kickboxing class?) Now foot; you’ll need handsay is “ouch.” But I’ll be back – ’cause this place is the real deal. don’t expect the instructor to give you a one-on-one explanation. I literwraps. ally walked in, intimidated by the abundance of guys and four girls (two of Hoger MMA | 5717 Richmond Ave. | Houston, TX 77057 whom were professional fighters, more on that later). So you have to pay atten713.808.9682 | www.hogermma.com tion and go with the flow. Everyone was pretty cool, and from what I could tell,

THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX AND TRY THIS WORKOUT THAT SEEMS ALMOST EFFORTLESS BUT DELIVERS A PUNCH. This is literally a dance party that combines exercise with fun and easy-to-follow dance moves in a nightclub setting. The idea is to have fun while your body works up a sweat. The calorie-burning routine is so easy: you simply follow a series of moves set to a DJ spinning 80’s, hip-hop, pop and disco music, add a little of your own panache and voila! Pop! Pop! The instructor shouts out instructions while more than 50 people move their bodies in synchronized motion; it’s pretty cool! The class is divided into segments to keep it fresh. You begin with a warm-up, followed by a more blood-pumping set and then, when you think it’s getting too hard, the instructor breaks the class into a soul train dance line, or at times, a conga line, giving each attendee the opportunity to let loose while they perform their free-style dance. This is a great stress reliever and will have you out of your shell in no time! For some, gyms can be a little overwhelming and this is a great option. The class is welcome to anyone eager to get fit. Kids are welcome too! It’s so great, in fact, that at least three doctors in the Houston area are now giving out Nightclub cardio class prescriptions and that’s no joke.

After a warm-up about halfway through the class, Oscar busted out with a song of serious squats. As the group got more comfortable, the moves got a little more daring. He even threw in a Bollywood song, which was received with wild applause. Within minutes everyone was prancing around, hands in prayer position like skilled extras on a Bollywood set. To wrap up the class, a cool down set to the tunes of Mariah Carey, in a mildly cheesy choreographed sequence which actually delivered one of the best stretches I’ve experienced. All in all this was a fun, sweaty workout that I probably would have otherwise not branched out and tried.

IF GYM SESSIONS ARE STARTING TO FEEL A LITTLE HUMDRUM, HOPE STONE’S HOPE CENTER, SET IN THE HEART OF THE MONTROSE AREA, OFFERS AN ASSORTMENT OF CLASSES GUARANTEED TO PUT A NEW TWIST IN YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE. A Beginner/Intermediate Ballet class caught this writer’s eye. Having been a childhood ballerina, I naively thought this would be a piece of cake and pictured a group of amateur ladies dabbling in a few pliés. Wrong. With a fairly complex series of bar and floor exercises, this class will whip your body – and mind – into shape faster than any aerobics class. Summer sessions are particularly challenging, with many out-of-school dancers keeping up their skills. Ballet slippers are a must for turns and pirouettes. It’s like being a kid again – even if you never were a ballet kid. The less limber might prefer Hope Center’s Gyrokinesis. It may sound mysterious, but the dance-ish exercises are fairly simple and accessible. Rhythmic and fluid, Gyrokinesis is somewhat reminiscent of Pilates, tai chi or yoga. Originally developed by professional dancer Juliu Horvath, the practice was meant to help repair injuries he had sustained as a dancer. Non-dancers will benefit from the self-massage aspect, referred to by its inventor as “awakening of the senses,” and should achieve increased joint flexibility and endurance. Half the class is spent on a small stool; the rest consists of mat exercises. The Iaido Sword class is another interesting choice. This ancient Japanese martial art involves investing in a real sword and donning a keikogi, a Japanese black workout uniform. Iaido loosely translates to “the way of harmonizing with the present.” Most of the members of this group, led by Craig Hocker, are serious adepts, interested in Japanese culture. Students use practice swords, metal blades called Iaito, which are either dull or only partially sharpened and no protective gear. Iaido is not intended as a self-defense technique, but instead is a great practice in attention, awareness and sense of personal space. Students are invited to observe a few classes before committing.

We aren’t going to tell you about each one, but if you’ve ever had a desire to try yoga in any of its incarnations try one of the many free classes offered all over town on Free Yoga Day, September 6. If you want a non-stop cardio intense workout, try a faster paced class like Vinyasa flow. If you want a more challenging class, try Ashtanga or Forrest Yoga. If flexibility is what you crave, Bikram yoga and hot yoga’s heat will help you get closer to your toes. Just remember to make sure you go to a certified studio, as you don’t want to risk injury.

BUT I RECENTLY HAD MY FIRST ONEON-ONE LESSON WITH HILARY OVER AT WASHINGTON PILATES AND LEFT HAPPILY SURPRISED. Pilates is different, to say the least. It’s intense in a different sort of way. It’s not crazy cardio, dripping wet sweaty (unless you are like me and are by nature a sweater). I took four classes with Hilary and in them learned more about my body than anything else I’ve ever done. First of all, my core is not nearly as strong as I thought! The ab work is much slower and meticulous; you must use your abs, there’s no cheating here. When you cheat, you are cheating yourself out of not only wicked results but also your hard-earned cash! Plus, if you don’t do the work properly it could result in you catapulting off something – but never fear, it won’t happen. That’s why Hilary is there, to catch you if you fall.

You really get out of this what you put into it. I had done some of the exercises in other classes but Pilates gets down to the nitty-gritty, working smaller hidden muscles. Hence the awkward soreness felt after a session. Some of the movements are able to target my tight hips in a way that not even my regular yoga practice can. In a lot of senses, it’s the fact that Pilates targets a very specified set of muscles in a very specified way – which is why a certified instructor is pivotal to your success. Washington Pilates takes duets, meaning you can train with a friend, BUT make sure that partner is at the same level of fitness, or you guessed it – you’re cheating yourself! The amount of machines you can work on paired with the thousands of exercises developed for them would be impossible to learn. Hilary was fantastic at seamlessly threading me from machine-to-machine, adjusting springs and pulleys and fuzzies and bars to make my hour worth my while. The clientspecific workout is definitely for someone who is serious about getting fit, and learning to control your body. You must be in sync with your alignment, breathing, etc., so your body becomes a fine-tuned machine. My sync is still a little cattywompus but I’m looking forward to exploring more Pilates to straighten me out!

BEING AN EXERCISE ENTHUSIAST, I HAVE NEVER PASSED UP AN OPPORTUNITY TO TRY A NEW WORKOUT... SO WHEN MY FRIEND CLIVE TOLD ME ABOUT A 2-WEEK BOOT CAMP I WAS QUICK TO AGREE TO IT, NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
SPX
He mentioned that it was the toughest workout he had ever taken, and he even bet me that I wouldn’t be able to complete the entire 2-week program (in retrospect, this was probably my cue to start asking questions). I accepted his challenge, and a challenge it was! I have taken several boot camps in the past, but I assure you, this is DEFINITELY the real thing. The SealPT Boot Camp is a 2-week challenge offered several times throughout the year at Memorial Park. It is a 90-minute workout starting at 5am. Each class is led by one or more veteran Special Forces military personnel and, although I took it for the fitness aspect of it, don’t be surprised if you see “white shirts” training with you. They are recruits (either enlisted or officer) preparing to join the military. They train with you until it’s time for them to “ship out.” I remember this
arriving on my first day, bright and early (or shall I say dark and early!) at 5am. The instructor hadn’t even closed his car door and he already had us in plank position ready for the first exercise of the morning – push-ups. Not only did we have a day filled with bear crawls, chase-the-rabbits, sit-ups, push-ups, sprints and 8 counts, but we had to do everything while being wet and covered in sand (funny how Clive never mentioned this part to me). As the days progressed, I had some of the most intense workouts of my life, but I would leave class each morning feeling like I could conquer the world! On the last day of the boot camp, when I graduated, I received an invitation to the Lifers Program (a maintenance program for boot camp graduates). I signed up immediately! It’s funny how when the boot camp first started I couldn’t wait for it to end but once it ended I wanted it to keep going. I never used to be a 5 o’clock in the morning kind of person, but now I absolutely LOVE it. I love being surrounded by other people who have gone through the same grueling 2 weeks as I have Be prepared to be mentaland who have the same motivation and dedication ly“broken down.” You might even to working out as I do, and hey, the weight loss is witness criers and quitters. It’s all part of nice too! It’s true what they say on the website – the process. Once you conquer mind over “It’s the toughest challenge you will ever love!” matter, it’s pushing yourself to finish. Proformer
MOST OF THE WORKOUTS AT SCULPT STUDIO FEATURE A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT CALLED THE PROFORMER – WHICH IS BASED ON PILATES. CREATED BY FITNESS VISIONARY SEBASTIEN LAGREE IN AN ATTEMPT TO FULFILL THE “INADEQUACIES” HE FOUND IN THE REFORMER, the Proformer is a new system capable of more, and it is not meant to be Pilates. SPX blends Pilates, bodybuilding and some cardio to sculpt, tone and strengthen. There are a variety of classes offered; at its core is the 40-minute shirt-drenching, SPX class. If you are already in shape and want to tone and chisel, this is it. They also offer a class called Pilates Plus and since SPX is so grueling, I thought this class would be no problem! Now, I’ve never taken a Fast-paced, intense resistance movePilates class in my life. I’m ments all done to music. touching, knees out (like a plié stance but laying down) pushing back and forth. Easy enough, I felt a little burn. Then he modified it with pelvis in the air. Not so easy anymore. With pelvis lifted (never dropping it) for the next four or five sets, my thighs were on FIRE! My glutes close to cramping, this is not normal Pilates. The core workout is insane. Let’s just say it hurts to take deep breaths the day after. A major part of the class is core focus. If your core is strong, then all movements should flow. Next it’s arms (apparently I have zero upper body strength), three sets of shoulders to triceps sequence. After just the first set, I felt I might lose an arm. I was elated when the set was over, only to be reminded I have two more sets of this sequence! Luckily, there are modifications for “Olive Oyls” out there like me. Next, we get on our backs, legs extended with feet in “fuzzies” (with resistance of the springs of course) making large circles, reaching, extending as wide as possible, repeating until my legs felt like they might circle off. And then we raised our pelvises again for another sequence! Balance for these movements is essential so your core is constantly tight, working to keep you steady. In 50 minutes, we extended, balanced, stretched and sweated, managing to burn close to 300 calories. You leave feeling balanced, stretched and with no doubt that results will come after such intensity.

COMMIT TO GET FIT WITH CELEB TRAINER CARI SHOEMATE
IN A CITY BRIMMING WITH PERSONAL TRAINERS AND EXERCISE GURUS, CARI SHOEMATE HAS RISEN TO BE THE CRÈME DE LA CRÈME. While it’s possible to attribute her celeb status to her ability to do over 100 pushups and sprint at speeds upwards of 15 miles per hour, her success is more likely due to understanding where her clients (who range from athletes and celebs to your average Joe Shmo) come from. After all, Cari knows what it’s like to struggle to stay fit. She’s done the corporate job. She’s gained the weight, felt the stress and knows how overwhelming it can be to get in (or stay in) shape. With a deep appreciation of her clients’ needs and a training style that’s “kinda like a blonde, friendly version of Jillian Michaels,” who better to help you shed that spare tire? Cari is a certified personal trainer, yoga teacher, group fitness instructor, trainer for the Houston Rockets Power Dancers, a regular on Houston’s Fox Morning News, and now the newest face (and Texas’ only face!) of Exercise TV. Cari started her career in commercial real estate. Too much travel and too little activity led her to gain weight and lose her sanity. Always wanting to return to fitness, her first love, she eventually told the nine-to-five to take a hike and focused her energy on becoming a full-time personal trainer. Today, as the new face of Exercise TV (where she rubs abs with the likes of Jillian Michaels and Billy Blanks) and hot off the release of her workout DVD, “Long, Lean Legs,” it was definitely the best decision she’s ever made. With a slew of diet programs, bizarre exercise equipment and trendy weight-loss scams, it’s so easy to feel overwhelmed when starting a fitness regime. Cari sympathizes with how difficult this can be and advises clients to just “keep it simple.” When it comes to buying healthy food she says, “Stick to fruits, veggies and meat – things you can recognize. If you look at the label and you can’t pronounce it, don’t buy it.” Similarly, when it comes to exercise her philosophy is: “Just keep it simple. Go for a walk, go for a run, do some pushups, or squats – the old school stuff works the best. A hard workout + good food = results.” A die-hard Houstonian, Cari believes our city gets a bad rap. “If you’re out and about on a Saturday morning, it’s clear how active our city truly is.” It’s true that Houston does have a lot of delicious restaurants (even Cari admits to loving egg kolaches once in awhile, although only the whole wheat ones!) but she does not believe we are bigger or fatter than any other U.S. city. In fact she thinks with our abundance of beautiful parks, running clubs, biking clubs and plethora of outdoor spaces, we set a great example.
48. august 10 | www.002mag.com
According to Cari, “Working out in the [Houston] heat is not a bad thing.” Sweating away in ninety-plus degrees, we’re all guilty of throwing in the exercise towel on a day (or three) during the Houston summer because “it’s just too darn hot!” The number one thing she urges Houstonians to do when exercising in the brutal summer sun is to hydrate. “Not just the thirty minutes before you work out, but all day, every day.” She advises drinking water the day before you exercise, during your workout and after. Even if you’re just going out for a quick 30-minute run, bring water with you, don’t just drink it before and after. She also recommends dropping the intensity a notch or two when sweatin’ it in the summer heat. Higher temperatures elevate our heat rate and put more stress on our body, but also help to burn calories faster. When it comes to getting in shape, Cari believes “the biggest motivator is you.” When her clients see results that they make happen, not necessarily weight loss, although it might be losing one or two pounds, but realize I am stronger. I can do 20 pushups instead of ten – that’s what motivates them to stick with it. Fitness to Cari is so much more than just looking good. To her, fitness is health, wellness and the ability to take charge of your life. It’s her passion – and she knows her stuff. The only thing better than having a trainer with skills, enthusiasm, not to mention legs, as great as Cari is having one who’s been there, who can relate to you and who loves the city you love. “I love Houston and will always be connected to the city because of my family, friends and experiences. My heart is here.” For more information, exercise tips, recipes and workout videos, check out Cari on www.cari-fit.com and www.exercisetv.com.

Jamey Rootes has one of the coolest jobs in Houston. As President of The Houston Texans he is responsible for all of the club’s business operations. During his tenure he has overseen the team’s stadium naming rights and sponsorship, coordinated radio and TV broadcasting relationships, engineered the club’s successful ticket and suite sales campaigns, led the creation and launch of the team’s identity, and developed the team’s highly acclaimed customer service strategy. And, he’s young…a two-time member of Sports Business Journal’s distinguished “Forty Under 40” list of leading sports executives. A native of Stone Mountain, Georgia, Rootes attended Clemson University and was a member of the Tigers’ soccer team that captured two NCAA titles and served as Student Body President. He is married with two children, resides in West University and after spending the day with this exceptionally talented, busy and charismatic executive, I got the feeling that if he wasn’t running this team that a career in motivational speaking could be in his future.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO WORK IN SPORTS? I knew I was interested in sports. After college at Clemson I went back and met with a guy named Bobby Robinson, the AD there, and said I think I want to do something in sports. He said, “Well, do you want to be a coach or in business?” and I just said, “Yes!” Well, that was my problem right there…they are not the same thing. That was really my eye-opener and impetus to get my graduate degree, work in the athletic department, coach and get some experience to figure out which direction I wanted to go. Eventually after 2 years I knew that I wanted to be in the sports business and not a coach.
people that are winners, that can take on new challenges. You don’t always have to have experience in what we’re asking you to do, but if you’re one of us, you’ll find a way to get it done and get it done right.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB IN THE SPORTS BUSINESS? First, I worked at Proctor & Gamble, which I knew was more of a stopover until I could get into sports. Then I got a call from Lamar Hunt’s office about a job in soccer, went and met with them and ended up becoming the GM of the Columbus Crew MLS team at age 28.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MANAGEMENT STYLE? I think it comes down to control the controllable. Meaning, just like in a football game, you have a game plan; well, we have our game plan on the business side and try to control the aspects we can control. Just as in that game, we’re prepared to change and deal with elements that come up that are out of our control. We also have our mission and vision statements, but the reality is those statements can’t just stay on a wall, they have to get into your head and heart and that’s part of managing to develop that culture that you want.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN AN EXECUTIVE OR EMPLOYEE? Passion. People that have a strong desire for success and are hungry. That have proven they can overcome obstacles and have been successful at whatever they do. I look for

HOW DID YOU GET TO HOUSTON? While I was in Columbus I got a call from a recruiter who said, “Do you want to work for the Houston NFL team?” I said, “Houston doesn’t have an NFL team.” She said, “They will soon.” I was definitely interested and came down and met with the owners; philosophically and ideologically it felt right and fortunately it has worked out.
HOW’D THE TEXANS GET THEIR NAME? The three finalists were the Stallions, Wildcatters and Texans. We decided that we’d make a decision after we had logo designs. Well, we knew what a stallion looked like, didn’t really know about wildcatter and Texan. Well, who’s to say what a “Texan” looks like? We couldn’t decide on anything we liked. We couldn’t get much out of our focus group and had been at it a while, so finally I spoke to Mr. McNair and told him you need to come down to our focus group. That was the very first day that we were presented with the bull head logo. They pulled back the sheet, showed the design and everyone said, “That’s it!, it’s perfect…That’s what a Texan is!” Mr. McNair turned to me and said, “You see, this marketing stuff isn’t that hard…” WHAT’S THE BIGGEST RISK YOU’VE TAKEN? I’ve certainly taken a few…but it’s not so much about the risk itself, because once I’ve thought about the risk and decided to do it, then I just forget about the risk. Throw your heart over the bar and your body will follow. That’s the way I try and live my life. As long as you’re in touch with what is really important to you, the risks don’t really matter.

The Garia features a Formula 1 inspired front suspension, a drive train built by an Italian company that also produces Ducati gearboxes and aluminum profiles made by the same company that supplies aluminum profiles to Aston Martin, Jaguar and Volvo. Available this month, the Garia LSV is fitted with street legal safety equipment such as seatbelts and side mirrors, and it also has a hydraulic brake system. Its small size makes it perfect for the city, and with tax-based incentives in many countries and an increasing number of states and countries that allow LSVs to be operated on roads with speed limits of 35 mph (50km/h) or less, the Garia LSV may be what you need off the links. EVENT CARRIED AWAY WHY SHOPPING EVENT IN CELEBRATION OF SEX AND THE CITY 2 WHERE TOOTSIES WHEN MAY 26
Houston’s fashion-savvy ladies got carried away during a fave private shopping soirée at Tootsies to celebrate the release of Sex and the City 2. Ladies strutted through the store in their stilettos in search of the coveted Halston Heritage line, which was featured throughout the movie, in hopes of having a little piece of Ms. Bradshaw’s infamous closet. A look-a-like contest provided a lucky shopper with a Tootsies gift card.

Your Looks shouLd kiLL Before a night on the town, we suggest freshening up with Nivea’s new Q10 products. And for the morning after, try the pocketsize Revitalizing Eye Roller Gel that reduces the appearance of dark circles, puffiness and fine lines, which will certainly come in handy after a night of imbibing and gambling (all for a good cause of course). www.Nivea.com

Nothing says you are a high roller more than pulling up to the valet in the new Porsche Panamera. The souped-up sedan is a grown-up’s version of the Porsche 911, topping out at speeds of 188mph. Consider this alternative mode of transportation to the evening’s festivities if your Aston Martin is in the shop.

FREEAGENT THEATER + JAYBIRD SPORTSBAND HD MEDIA PLAYER BLUETOOTH You can have all the photos and movies you want on HEADPHONES your computer but it is not too comfortable watching them from that stiff office chair. Transfer that entire digital media from your computer directly to your living room with Seagate’s FreeAgent Theater + HD Media Player. It is a unique docking system that provides a quick and easy way to connect your external hard drive to your TV. After loading the drive with your favorite movies, videos, music and pictures from the home PC, simply slide it into the FreeAgent Theater + dock to get instant access to your digital media library. The included software syncs with both a PC and Mac. It has an HDMI connector with full 1080p HD playback and Dolby Digital audio output. www.seagate.com | $99
These headphones may look like they came out of the ’80s but up close they have a sleek, modern edge. No matter how cool they look it’s all about the sound. And every note I heard from my music catalog sounded great through these wireless headphones. The SB2 Sportsband introduces the option of CD quality music performance over Bluetooth. It comes with apt-X on board, which cleans up, adds depth, bass and treble to your music matching that of CD quality output. The bass-rich music experience is incredible and pairs with most all Bluetooth devices with a regular-sized headphone jack including your iPhone, iPod or iPad. www.jaybirdgear.com | $99
CHARGEPOD A mobile device is only good as long it has power. I probably have miles of cables and cords to keep all my devices charged. I threw most of those cords out recently after trying the Chargepod and I haven’t looked back. Think of the Chargepod as a starfish with charging ports for arms. Up to six different devices can be connected and charged using a variety of dongles. And by variety, I mean over 3,000 different devices can be charged using the stable of available connectors. This includes cell phones, NAV units, portable game systems, MP3 players and digital cameras. The device comes with three different connectors – one Apple Dock connector, one miniUSB connector and one micro-USB connector. Each dongle is about $10 and can be purchased on the company’s website. www.callpod.com | $49.95
NIKE+ SPORTBAND WITH HEART MONITOR I’ve run many races with the Nike+ SportBand on my wrist to keep aware of my time and pace. Nothing could be simpler than to plug the small LCD digital watch face into my computer’s USB port. The data uploads to my online account so I can track my distance and other vitals. Nike just released an upgraded version of this system that now includes a heart rate monitor. It lets you see your BPM at a glance on your Nike+ SportBand, or hear spoken feedback of your BPM while you run on your iPod nano. The heart rate monitor, made by industry-leader Polar, even works with Polar’s own range of training computers at the same time. It has a soft textile chest strap that promises to “seamlessly adapt” to your body shape and is – thankfully – machine washable. In addition to some new two-tone color schemes, the updated Nike+ SportBand packs an improved screen with a white background for better visibility, along with a welded seal for water resistance. I just wish it could make me run faster and longer. www.nike.com | $59

ACKNOWLEDGE, ACKNOWLEDGE, ACKNOWLEDGE
By Tim Moloney
I WAS HAVING LUNCH WITH A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE THE OTHER DAY AT RDG + BAR ANNIE (WHEN AM I NOT?) AND SHE WAS TELLING ME ABOUT A RECENT CORPORATE RETREAT THAT WAS HELD AT HER COMPANY. THE THEME WAS “ACKNOWLEDGE.” NOW, WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN? SIMPLY PUT, ACKNOWLEDGING IS THE MOST POWERFUL THING YOU CAN DO IN ANY SITUATION. SAY YOU WALK INTO A PARTY AND SEE SOMEONE YOU KNOW – BUT YOU REALLY DON’T FEEL LIKE TALKING TO THEM. INSTEAD OF HIDING BEHIND A POTTED PALM, JUST GO UP TO THEM AND SAY HELLO. DO YOU KNOW HOW GOOD THIS WILL MAKE THE OTHER PERSON FEEL? OR, SAY YOU’VE MADE A MISTAKE AT WORK. INSTEAD OF TRYING TO SHIFT BLAME OR COVER IT UP, ACKNOWLEDGE AND OWN IT. AND THEN MOVE ON. FINALLY, WHEN SOMEONE DOES SOMETHING GOOD, ACKNOWLEDGE THAT. EVERYONE LOVES PRAISE AND APPRECIATION. OK, I’M OFF MY SOAPBOX NOW. BACK TO BEING A SILLY, SUPERFICIAL PERSON. AT LEAST I ACKNOWLEDGE IT.
AND THE HONOREES ARE… The rest of the world isn’t in awards show mode right now, but there’s no reason why we can’t be – right here in this magazine. So, I’m instituting my honorary Wise Guy and Wise Gal awards this month. Drumroll, please. Our Wise Guy is none other than the one and only Anthony Bourdain, who’s coming to Houston on September 20 for an appearance at Jones Hall. The Society for the Performing Arts (www.spahouston.org) is getting “Up Close and Confidential” with the bestselling author, TV personality and opinionated bon vivant. Ticket prices range from $25-$65. And who might this month’s Wise Gal be? In a stunning upset, it’s Ashley Ronald Nelly (speaking of opinionated), the brains and sass behind productsnob.com. Ashley is a frequently fierce blogger who reviews all sorts of products, mainly geared toward girls but she did a recent piece on Southern bow ties that was pretty cool. She’s always looking for new products to review, so send them on. And tell your lady friends about the blog. It’s a really good read, because in addition to being a product snob, she’s a damn good writer.
TIME AFTER TIME If there’s one thing that bothers me (in addition to jean shorts and birds), it’s men who don’t wear watches. Women get a pass on this, mainly because they’re usually wearing other jewelry. But guys? Seriously? Don’t ask me what time it is. Get a damn watch. Some say, “I don’t need a watch. I can get the time on my phone.” You know what then? Look at your damn phone and stop bothering me.

With that said, you can get yourself either a Timex or one of these beauties from our friend Franco Valobra. For me, there’s no in between. First up for your consideration is this magnificent Vacheron Constantin Toledo 1952 with a beautiful cushioned, shaped case in 18kt white gold with a moon phase, sub-second dial and crocodile strap. It’s restrained, it’s elegant and frankly, it’s expensive. Call for pricing. If you’re more of a flashy fellow (see also: me), the Hublot’s Big Bang is for you. I love this watch. Made of 18kt rose gold and with a cool skeleton back that lets you view the works, its band of simple rubber brings it back down to earth. Franco will work with you on pricing for this one as well. Talk about a Wise Guy. Maybe he should have been this month’s honoree.
BRICKS AND MORTAR Just a few months after opening on Westheimer, our friends at Mortar have already moved to a new, larger space across the street. The terrifically well-edited men’s store seems to be running some counter-programming to the ongoing drumbeat of depressing economic news, and good for them. Remember, Microsoft was born during a recession, too. AND THAT’S IT FOR THIS MONTH. I GOT NOTHING ELSE. SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER.

atches are often used to measure a man’s success and sartorial prowess. All black watches – and I’m talking all black: black face, black srap – are borderline androgynous and gives the wearer an understated sleekness. A personal favorite, the Rolex submariner, isn’t even available from the Swiss watchmaker; the noir timepiece is custom designed by Blackltdedition.com who specializes in painting watches black and treats them using an advanced process that gives the
band that unique stealth black finish.

make your own protein shake Photography by Jaime Lagdameo WHO BETTER THAN THE WOMAN BEHIND REALMEALS365 (AND MODERN DAY RENAISSANCE WOMAN) TO TEACH US HOW TO MAKE THE PERFECT SHAKE POST-WORKOUT! IVONNE HALLARD TAKES TIME OUT OF HER BUSY DAY TO SHARE SOME TIPS! WHEN HALLARD ISN’T AT THE HELM OF 365, SHE’S BUSY WITH HER LATEST VENTURE WWW.MYDAILYDEALS.COM, A LOCAL VERSION OF GROUPON WHERE SHE SNAGS THE ULTIMATE DEAL FOR YOU!
NUTTY CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRY BANANA SHAKE Servings: 2.0 Serving Size: 16 oz Calories/Serving: 375 CPF Ratio: 37-35-28 INGREDIENTS SOY MILK 1 cup WATER 1 cup PROTEIN POWDER- CHOCOLATE 2 scoop STRAWBERRY, FROZEN 1 cup BANANA, FRESH 1 large PEANUT BUTTER, NATURAL 2 tbsp ALMOND EXTRACT 1/4 tsp ICE CUBES 8
Start off with a liquid such as Soy Milk or Almond Milk. Soy Milk is a great source of protein, calcium and isoflavones and has no lactose or cholesterol. Add your protein powder, a great way to increase your protein intake. We recommend one without aspartame. There are many popular brands that come in different flavors, and vanilla blends right in with the taste of most fruits.
ADD FROZEN OR FRESH FRUIT, EITHER WORKS GREAT. OUR VERSION IS MADE WITH FROZEN STRAWBERRIES AND FRESH BANANAS. EXPERIMENT WITH YOUR OWN FAVORITE FRUITS.
DON’T take a peek while blending!
DO have fun with the mix-ins! Here is where the magic begins. In our version we added peanut butter and a dash of pure almond extract. This is your chance to put your brand on your smoothie. Testing new combinations is fun and creative. Mix-in options: flaxseed meal, coffee, almond butter, vanilla extract
60. august 10 | www.002mag.com
If you have more fresh fruit than frozen, you may want to add a few extra ice cubes to give the smoothie a cooler temperature and better texture. Mixing ice with fruit makes the smoothie cool, delicious, and refreshing in the summertime heat!

How to Blend Blend ingredients until the contents have been liquefied. Depending on the make and model of your blender, it can take anywhere from 5-30 seconds or longer if the jar is full. Make sure you don’t have too much in your jar or your blender will never achieve proper circulation, even with the most powerful motor.
YOU ARE NOW ON YOUR WAY TO BECOMING YOUR OWN IRON SMOOTHIE CHEF!
DON’T add sugar, stick to natural extracts and other natural sweeteners.
! p U s m o t t o B BONUS TIP Buy many of your favorite ingredients in bulk at major retailers such as Costco or Sam’s Club and you’ll save significantly. TO GO KaiseKi is a traditional Japanese multi-course extravaganza that dates back to the 14th century. It requires a very skilled chef, exquisite ingredients, lots of time and poetry to prepare. Each course symbolizes different themes from seasons, landscapes and moods. All the dishes are meant to stimulate all the senses and take the guest on a delicatessen journey. Thanks to Kubo’s Chef Ito, this ancient Japanese feast is available in town. Available in “full” Kaiseki and a “mini” version. Reservations are required – and ask for the sake pairing if you really want to do it right.. Kubo’s 2414 University Blvd. 200, Houston TX, 77005 www.kubos-sushi.com

HIS MARKET/CAFÉ IS NO DELI OR CAFETERIA! ALTHOUGH ORDERING IS COUNTER SERVICE STYLE, YOU’LL FIND THE QUALITY OF DINING IS SUPERB GOURMET RESTAURANT QUALITY. IT’S CHEF DRIVEN, CASUAL DINING BUT THERE’S NO REASON THEY SHOULDN’T BE ON YOUR RADAR. IF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN (OR NEED AN EXCUSE), THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN THE NEED FOR SOMETHING NEW.
Many of you dine downtown, whether it’s during the workweek for lunch or for dinner before the theatre. There is no doubt that your dining options are mundane. This is usually where I would name a few but why draw away from the diamond in the rough. The charming historical space has seating on its second level, street level and patio seating along the sidewalk. The Market is set up with wire metal racks holding various household items downtown dwellers need from washing detergent to olive oil to freshly baked breads, pastries, wine and specialty items.
• S.P.L.A.T.- sprouts, Portobello, avocado and tomato with a touch of pesto • Join the Byrd’s Club- turkey, ham, homemade bacon, fried green tomato, arugula and white cheddar piled strategically between 3 slices of bread slathered with creole honey mustard
At the helm of the kitchen is CHEF MARLIES WASTERVAL. Her creations are gourmet, delicious. The quality of produce, meat, fish is beyond what you would expect from this market and café. It’s surprisingly, delightfully good. Almost too good to share!
entrées
I stopped in for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon and found myself on their patio, a couple hours later, sipping delicious chardonnay and enjoying an outstanding skirt steak. Naturally, my visit began with lunch dishes and ended with dinner entrées. Thankfully, I wasn’t alone on this visit.
• Half Rotisserie Chicken- with grilled pear, romaine hearts and goat cheese drizzled with a light pesto sauce • Grilled Salmon- served with apple pancetta crumble and lemon scented orzo

After scanning the menu, the smoked tuna club sandwich caught my attention. I had no idea what to expect so I figured this was the way to go. Would it be a filet of tuna or ground tuna like what you find in canned tuna? No clue, but I was intrigued. But to start, we went with the hummus of the day, sweet chili hummus. We settled into our table outside and took in Downtown when we were served this deep bowl of yummy goodness. The sweet chili hummus was subtle so it didn’t stray far from the original. Little specks of chilies peppered the hummus that came in a smaller bowl nestled in the center of mini fried bread triangles. Yes, fried bread! In olive oil nonetheless – it was awesome! The crunch and flavor is crazy. Never would I have imagined frying bread but with the hummus it was an inventive twist to pita bread. Not wanting to overindulge on this pleasant appetizer, I put the fried bread goodness down and waited for my sandwich. And then it arrived. FOUR TRIPLE STACKED SANDWICH TRIANGLES WITH THE UNCANNIEST FLAVOR I’VE EVER TASTED. The smoked tuna is made in-house, as are most meats. They grind it, so it resembles canned tuna in texture, and

4 then smoke it for hours! Smoked tuna! It’s insane. It tastes like smoked brisket! I could not wrap my head around the fact that I was eating tuna and not brisket. It’s layered in between whole wheat bread, tomato, homemade bacon and arugula. It’s shockingly amazing! I also got to taste a bite of the meatloaf sandwich my fiancé ordered and it too was on the WOW level. They also grind the meat for it and serve it atop a ciabatta-like bun with caramelized onions and their homemade BBQ. It’s a great combination of savory flavors. As a self-proclaimed foodie, I was in heaven at this point. So many new flavors and creations are always a thrilling discovery! It was already one of those meals that I knew, if I ever couldn’t think of where to eat lunch or any meal, Byrd’s would definitely be one of those go-to options. JUST WHEN I THOUGHT MY TASTE BUDS HAD BEEN PIQUED, then Chef Marlies Wasterval took me to a whole other level of deliciousness. A dinner entrée of sweet pepper marinated skirt steak over cumin honey mashed potatoes, pickled carrots and chilies with a side of heirloom tomato sauce had me and my fiancé finding space in our bellies for more food. Chef Marlies is the best-kept secret downtown! We were cleaning the plate literally! The quality of skirt steak and the subtleness of the flavors all combined to make this wildly sweet but savory dish. No flavor overwhelmed the other. Not the cumin, not the chilies outshined the steak. And making this dish even sweeter: their entrées are reasonably priced from $11-15! Not deterred by the amount of food already ingested, we powered on for dessert. (I can’t have a meal without closing it out with something sweet.) A twist on the regular coffee after dinner, we had a shot of espresso poured over hazelnut gelato. It’s caffeine on a sugar rush! You kill two birds, one stone. It’s my kind of dessert. But that was just an introduction to their enormous, i.e., shareable, pecan pie brownie a la mode. It’s big. It’s gooey. It’s warm. It’s awesome. The next time you are planning lunch or your evening at the theatre, head to Byrd’s. You can have a gourmet meal at an unbeatable price that will have you wondering why you didn’t know about this gem earlier. My meal was beyond memorable. My excitement for it was electric. I don’t say that about many places and many never make it into my normal dining lineup. I can happily say Byrd’s is on that list.

Although they’ve been on the block (didn’t plan that one) a while now, their induction into the lunch realm has only been around a few months. By now, you should know that their Block 7 burger is amazing. Their lunch menu is equally delicious and inventive. On my visit, I had the stuffed chicken salad while my sister ordered the smoked Atlantic salmon. Chef Miguel, the mad scientist behind the menu, showcases his talent by creating extraordinary dishes out of local, ordinary ingredients. The salad had chicken slices, wrapped in crispy bacon, stuffed with almonds, cheese and golden raisins, and served next to a bed of romaine with fresh blueberries, gruyere, toasted almonds, in a poppy seed vinaigrette. Perfection! Never has chicken wrapped in bacon been prepared so perfectly. There were no raw bacon pieces that can sometimes remain when you don’t cook the bacon a bit before wrapping. It provided this crispy, crunchy shell to tender chicken with cheese and bits of raisin mixing together in the middle. It was surprising light as well. The presentation on the salmon was quite unexpected. Slivers of salmon are served next to a line of crostini with a slather of crème fraiche on the plate for dressing and a cluster of pickled onions. The idea is to build it as you’d like. It’s a beautiful dish and a great serving size for lunch that won’t knock you out later. If you’re jonesing for a NEW LUNCH SPOT, CHECK OUT WHAT’S NEW AT THE BLOCK. BLOCK 7, THAT IS… 70. august 10 | www.002mag.com
Located in the former Bistro Vino, this is no Tex-Mex restaurant. Hence the name. It’s ambiguous for a reason. Not wanting to confuse customers with the illusion of queso and fajitas, Ocean’s is up to slight interpretation. But in all reality, after dining here, it is spot on. Seafood is the star of the menu. They do offer some prime filet but the seafood outshines the filet. We started with the Ocean’s ceviche and the oriental. The Ocean’s ceviche came with thin slices of salmon with julienned red onion, olives, manzano chile, a splash of orange juice, avocado, shaved parmesan and cilantro across the center of a rectangular dish with tostadas around the edge for layering. The menu doesn’t specify what fish will be served – the idea of the freshness means using what they get the same day. ONCE A SPECIFIC FISH RUNS OUT, IT’S OUT. The oriental ceviche came with thin yellowtail slices, julienned cucumber, chives, ginger and an orange juice, soy sauce, rice vinegar and sesame seed oil marinade. Both were fresh and great, different flavors. Not feeling quite satisfied yet, we tried the Ocean’s, Prime Filet and Maximiliano tacos. The Ocean’s taco is 4 ounces of grilled lobster tail, creamy chipotle sauce, black beans and avocado on a flour tortilla. IT’S PRETTY AWESOME. SOUNDS CRAZY BUT IT HAPPENS TO WORK NICELY. The prime filet mignon taco has the flavor of a typical Mexican taco served with white onions and cilantro only. That’s authentic. The Maximiliano is grilled shrimp in their special house red sauce with mozzarella, avocado, shaved Parmesan and extra virgin olive oil on a corn tortilla. Another crazy sounding combo but it’s good too! (I want the recipe to this special house red sauce!) You can order the same tacos above as tostadas and both versions come with a side of pommes frites and an assortment of sauces. If inventive but authentic Mexican is what you crave, they have you covered.
There’s a new cupcake queen in town! The LA original – who is actually credited for starting the cupcake craze – has finally landed in Houston. SPRINKLES! Hold on to your hats, folks, because THERE’S NO DENYING, THIS CUPCAKE TOPS THEM ALL. Other than the storefront being adorable, lines go out the door and the flavor is unparalleled. The moment I tried their red velvet masterpiece, the wheel in my head started spinning. “Oh no, this could be trouble!” The moistness of the cupcake is something I’ve never encountered in others. The cream cheese frosting is not too sweet so devouring a whole entire cupcake or two is no big feat. Check out all their flavors and the days offered by visiting their website. Lucky for me, they offer red velvet every day! And for those of you who are vegan or gluten free, this flavor comes in both options so you too can indulge in this deliciousness.

❸ ❶ M Y F I T F OOD S Locations - 12 locations and 7 drop-off points. Also available in Austin and Dallas. service - The Shepherd location I visited had really friendly, outgoing, knowledgeable honest service. Right down to letting you know which dishes aren’t the most flavorful. Packaging - Not the most exciting containers, although reusable containers are a plus. Black and white label with nutritional information and microwaving time on side. Coded such as LC for low carb. Their thin stick logo man is present everywhere, bags, corner of labels, menu, website, etc. Denyse’s killuh chili, small serving - A decent sized (or normal, rather) portion of ground meat, black beans, chunks of celery and tomato are mixed into a tomato chili sauce. It has a bit of spice and the flavors aren’t bad for a healthy chili. It’s actually really tasty, to be honest. choice trail Mix - Almonds, walnuts, cashews, dried assorted berries and chocolate chips round out this classic
trail mix snack. You really can’t mess this snack up and it does hit the spot when you feel a sudden urge of hunger come on. ❷ SM ART M EALS Locations - 2 service - Very nice, they ask questions to get to the bottom of what dish you’d probably enjoy most and offer “cooking”/reheating techniques (use a toaster oven) to enjoy the meal at its best flavor. Packaging - Reusable containers with more professional looking labels, packaging is colorful and large with the pertinent nutritional information and microwaving instructions. steak Pommes Frites, small serving - A palm-sized seared/almost done filet mignon comes sliced with a side of rosemary French fries and a medley of zucchini and peppers. Opting to put it in the toaster oven, the filet was a bit dry afterward but it was still a very nice cut. I couldn’t taste the demi-glace. I would think if there were more
❸ of it, the dryness factor wouldn’t have been an issue. The small amount (this is a diet dish, folks) of fries crisped up. And remarkably the veggies were still crunchy! I thought for sure they’d turn into mush. The flavor is pretty decent. The veggies were seasoned and cooked great. Basil tofu dip - This dip is definitely a favorite but I would dip crudité in it rather than a chip. The flavor is so crisp you need something fresh to complement it and a chip is definitely not it. ❸ R E AL M E AL S 3 6 5 Locations - 1 but delivery is offered service - Knowledgable staff helps you find the meal plan for your desired outcome. Packaging - Reusable containers (Yea!). Small labels. Finding the name for the dish can be tricky with all the nutritional information, instructions, etc. chipotle turkey chili small - Obviously, I have a thing for chili. And lucky for me I nabbed the last one, leading me to believe this is a good choice. And it definitely was!

YOUR CHOICES ARE MANY. BUT THE REAL QUESTION IS, ARE THEY APPETIZING? A PREPACKAGED MEAL LABELED WITH THE NUTRITIONAL FACTS SOUNDS IDEAL IF YOU’RE TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT OR JUST WANT HEALTHY MEAL OPTIONS, BUT IF THEY DON’T TASTE GOOD, WHAT’S THE POINT. WE’RE HERE TO WEED THROUGH A FEW TO GET DOWN TO THE NITTY-GRITTY. WOULD WE BE RETURN CUSTOMERS ON THIS GREAT PREPACKAGED HEALTH MACHINE?

This chili had more veggies in it. Diced bits of zucchini, onion, bell peppers are abundant with black beans and ground turkey in a chili mix. It’s not very saucy or spicy, but the flavors are great and you feel satisfied with the portion when finished. tiramisu snack - A small serving of what seems like tiramisu pudding comes with a little ladyfinger garnish dipped in chocolate. It tastes just like tiramisu but I couldn’t get over the texture. It’s not quite as smooth and light as a pudding. chicken parmigiano - A few strips of chicken come lightly breaded with marinara sauce and a light sprinkle of cheese and dried herbs. Served with broccoli on the side. Disclaimer: At press time, we were experiencing the horrible thunderstorms from numerous tropical disturbances. This led to power outages we weren’t aware of and eventually these dishes unknowingly went bad because the fridge was out, in other words, the image is of the delish looking Chicken parm that went bad. You’ll have to imagine the chili.
CONCLUSION: After trying (and attempting to try) all three of these (there are MANY more) meal plan providers the decision is in: They all offer great variety so in reality, it depends on what your goal is. And, to be honest, what’s available in your area. I personally had My Fit Foods at my gym so I ate them most regularly. It was a matter of convenience not necessarily taste. Regardless, these meals are a great option whether you are trying to lose weight or picking out lunch to take to work for the week. It’s a healthier alternative to fast food. At a couple dollars difference, your waistline (and heart) will thank you! august 10 | www.002mag.com .71

EVENT: SPRINKLES CUPCAKES’ SOIREE WHY: GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION WHERE: HIGHLAND VILLAGE WHEN: JUNE 21 Sprinkles sparkled during their grand opening celebration with a Hollywood-style soiree. The famous Beverly Hills-based, Oprah-approved, out-of-this-world cupcake shop was welcomed with open arms by H-town’s crème de la crème and has become the must-stop-by-before-we-go locale at Highland Village. It’s really like the cherry on top after an exhausting day of shopping. The atmosphere was glamorous; more than 300 guests relaxed and mingled, drank plenty of Veuve Clicquot Champagne and of course… ate plenty of Sprinkles Cupcakes. Word of advice…proceed with caution, these little suckers can be quite addicting. They are so yummy!

EVEN IN HOUSTON’S DIVERSE MUSICAL LANDSCAPE, THE IDEA OF A BLUEGRASS VIOLINIST MERGING INTO THE CITY’S LIVE MUSIC SCENE WITHOUT CHANGING STYLES WOULD SEEM FAR-FETCHED. UNTIL HILARY CAME ALONG. So how old were you when you first started getting out and playing with people, playing live? You were in the church when you were young, right? Yeah, singing in the church. It was a cappella, harmony singing. So I guess I was about 19, 20, and I had taken a couple of years off from playing altogether, and I started going to bluegrass jams and started playing bluegrass again, learning how to improvise, throwing myself in there with the musicians. Coming from playing a lot of classical and music that was just, you know, very rehearsed. It’s actually a very difficult thing for most of us to jump in there and sort of suck at times, really, and force yourself out of your box. It wasn’t until I hooked up with Umbrella Man I guess about 4 years ago that I really started getting into the club scene here inside the Loop that I really started meeting the musicians that would change me in some really profound ways, musically and personally – that I can make a lot of different kinds of music and still be myself with my style, and keep that integrity. You’ve said you feel a sort of responsibility in your lyrics – but what about the music? Do you feel a sort of responsibility to the history of bluegrass, musically? Very much so. I mean that’s a very insular, hardcore culture, and it has been so co-opted and corporatized… the people really just feel this pull to maintain a lot of those tones and sounds and everything that is ancient coming from Celtic music, our Irish heritage, so you really want to keep that connection and, yeah, I want to play and experiment and grow but I want to keep my roots tied down into that. It’s a very specific genre. How do they treat innovation within bluegrass circles, if you want to innovate and push the boundaries? Generally, it’s squashed, like a bug (laughs). It’s like jazz, where you’ve got your jazz snobs – jazz snobs and bluegrass snobs have so much in common. It requires so much discipline to play it; people are so much more passionate about keeping the roots alive. And there’s a lot of conservatism in the culture. I know many musicians who tried to get involved and tried to go out to the festivals and they just really were discouraged because they were open-minded individuals and a little different. Bluegrass has definitely turned away the next generation of innovators, and also a lot of people who innovate in bluegrass music are leaving. As popular country has taken this dive in the last 20 or 25 years to where it’s basically pop music, has bluegrass further divorced itself from the overall genre? No, because you take somebody like Bill Monroe, who just stuck to who he was through all those years. No matter what happened, it was not accepted by country music. I mean bluegrass is sort of left over from the old days, and it seemed to be an embarrassment for a while. But then people like Ricky Skaggs – people loved Ricky when he did his country thing and that whole movement of Ricky Skaggs and Emmylou [Harris] – bluegrass was in the music, like Ricky would unplug and his band would play bluegrass at the end of his shows, and that was really, really rare but the artists themselves, I mean,
78. august 10 | www.002mag.com
so many country artists just adore bluegrass music, they have bluegrass musicians on their albums… but I think anything that’s just too… deeply Hillbilly is not going to be embraced by the corporate culture because hillbillies… you know, you can’t control them. I mean they don’t need you (laughs). They’re not gonna take a lot. They’re going to be honest and tell it like it is. But there are artists who are really trying to put themselves out there and make compromises. I mean my album is pretty pop and it has a lot in common with mainstream pop country, but it’s still me and all those roots are down in there. On one hand, you have this frustration with mainstream country and the way things are going and on the other hand there’s so much beauty in the pop song. I love the pop format and simple arrangements and whatnot. I think you can do something that’s really emotional and deep and really affects people, in a pop format, and still be sellable, still be successful and make some money. There are always ways to walk that line or find that balance. When you have cover versions on your record, but also sort of a storyline or theme, do you think about how you’re incorporating someone else’s lyrics into your storyline? I guess I sort of have a vision that I try and stick to and things do happen organically and little pieces of the puzzle come in at different times. The songs that I really love and the ones that I end up using come through very quickly, just writing it down basically. It’s so hard to talk about, how things come together, where they come from and because of this… just seemed like this belongs here, you know what I mean? It all comes together. What’s the biggest difference between your new album and the last? Well, the last album was recorded live and it was first and second takes. I wasn’t going for technical perfection, I was going for feeling. This one, I went to Tommy Detamore’s studio with my favorite musicians – Paul Valdez on drums, Kelly Doyle on guitar, Geoffrey Muller on bass and Wayne “Animal” Turner on guitar. Some wonderful things happened, and I was able to get exactly what I wanted, sound-wise. I wasn’t really going for something that sounded really mainstream or pop-ish but that’s kind of the way it turned out after I got everybody together, recording them. It just came out. It’s really simple and clear and really very angelic in a lot of ways. A lot of fun. A lot of it’s about dreams, dreamy, love songs and dealing with the aftermath of love. But, yeah, it was a whole different process and sort of terrifying, but I think that the best things that you do are absolutely terrifying.

SANCTUARY | LATEST WASHINGTON UPSTART ISN’T LEAVING THINGS TO CHANCE 2420 washington ave, houston, tx 77007 | 713.861.7300 | www.sanctuaryhouston.com
R
UNNING A BAR ON WASHINGTON AVENUE IS LIKE PLAYING RUSSIAN ROULETTE. SOME ESTABLISHMENTS WITH EVEN THE MOST MUNDANE FORMULAS CAN GIVE IT A SPIN AND COME UP ROSES EVERY SINGLE TIME BY SHEER LUCK OF THEIR LOCATION. BY THE SAME TOKEN, HOWEVER, THERE ARE SOME SPOTS THAT SEEM TO DROP ENTREPRENEURIAL OWNERS WITH SEEMINGLY GREAT IDEAS LIKE A SACK OF LEAD – SIMPLY DUE TO CHANCE. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THE CONSTANT GUESSING GAME AS TO WHO THE NEXT TENANT WILL BE AT 2420 WASHINGTON HAS FINALLY COME TO AN END THOUGH, AS SANCTUARY HAS PUT THE PROVERBIAL REVOLVER DOWN IN FAVOR OF A MORE MATURE AND LESS MESSY GAME.
Sure, we had plenty of kudos for the previous tenant, Block 21, with its ornate and extravagant flair, but sometimes it takes a stronger horse to lead a lame one to pasture and Sanctuary gladly took the reins. A similar layout as before awaits patrons (high ceilings, spacious dance floor, elevated and plush couches lining the walls), but the devil and the difference are in the details. Sanctuary makes no bones about the ambiance they are aiming for. The immense front room is all Miami, adorned in white and graced with clean lines and accented by green bamboo. The front bar is backlit in a cool, blue haze – the kind that can make a guy think he’s cooler than he actually is. Guilty. Usually when places try to partition up their ambiance, they’ll stick some leopard print pillows and a plastic palm tree behind a curtain and call it the jungle room. Meanwhile, you’re still listening to the exact same music, sitting on the exact same chairs and still waiting on a drink just like before you got lost on the way to the bathroom. Sanctuary does a much better job. Through a back hallway, visitors can enter a completely different attitude in the decidedly Vegas back bar. Crushed velvet, crimson lighting and a change in soundtrack can make a guy forget about the real Sin City and the $1,000 mistake he made in June. (Never bet against the Lakers. Ever.) The service is tight and friendly wherever you find yourself inside Sanctuary. Everyone is given the VIP experience, so feel free to meander without fear of sideways glance or dirty look.
Sanctuary’s crowd is as hot as the all-American nightspots from which it borrows its motif. Bass-booming weekend nights are dress-to-impress and cater to a seasoned, upscale clientele with reservations and full bottle service. Sanctuary rests the strobe lights and frenetic tunes in favor of lower lighting and a more intimate feel on weeknights, but the upscale nature remains. Sanctuary’s happy hour is sick, as the kids are saying nowadays. It runs all evening Tuesday and Wednesday, and consists of $2 off beer and cocktails, 25% off all bottles in their delectable wine selection and 25% off their gourmet, yet belly-filling fare. Sanctuary understands that a Tuesday and Wednesday happy hour is often just a tease for most working folk, so they run it back Thursday through Saturday nights from 8 to 10. Ever wonder how great it must feel to play Russian Roulette and be the last guy at the table? Yeah…not really something I dwell on either, but if Washington Avenue is indeed a similarly great equalizer, then it’s clear that Sanctuary is refusing to rely upon sheer luck. Sanctuary would much rather rely on the hard work, class and attention to detail it takes to make it in Houston.

Bea Here Now By Beatrice Valencia
ONE OF THE PERKS (OR DRAWBACKS) OF THIS POSITION IS GETTING TO EAT AT ALL THE FINE ESTABLISHMENTS HOUSTON HAS TO OFFER, PLUS WE GET FOOD OR OFFERS AT THE OFFICE WEEKLY. A DRAWBACK IF YOU’RE DIETING, A PERK IF YOU’RE A FOODIE. AND WITH ALL THIS EATING COMES THE SACRIFICE OF WORKING IN EXERCISE TIME INTO MY SCHEDULE. BUT BEING THAT I REALLY ENJOY FOOD, I DO THE WORK SO I CAN CONTINUE TO ENJOY AND DIMINISH THE GUILT OR JUSTIFY IT. THEY’RE INTERCHANGEABLE. CAN I REALLY FEEL GUILT WHEN I’M ENJOYING IT SO MUCH? I DON’T THINK SO. I’D LIKE TO GET TO THE PEARLY GATES AND NOT WONDER WHAT THAT SPICY CHICKEN SANDWICH TASTED LIKE. SO THIS MONTH, I INDULGED IN THAT SANDWICH, SOME TASTY BBQ, A CHIC FRENCH CAFÉ PLUS A FEW SURPRISES.
Je t’ aime Paris ♥

ePicure café 2005 West Gray street, 713.520.6174 | www.epicure-café .com This time of year reminds me of my trip to Paris last summer. I crave pain de chocolate, croque moinsuers and champagne – anything Parisian. Luckily, I can get some satisfaction at this bistro style café. At Epicure, I get a bit of the fare and the small café feeling. We ordered their ham and cheese quiche served with a Caesar salad, a croissant and some alfajors (obviously not French, but delicious) for dessert. I like to eat my bites of quiche with salad. They mix deliciously together. What’s not to love about a buttery croissant! And the alfajors are a wonderful treat that isn’t overwhelmingly sweet. Caramel is sandwiched in cookie and dusted with powdered sugar. Makes my teeth tingle just typing it! Definitely my go-to meal if I’m feeling nostalgic.
And just when you thought they couldn’t get anymore delicious they introduce a new item to their menu. Something that hasn’t been done in years! Their leap into the spicy chicken sandwich world could not be any more appropriate. After all, this is the chicken Mecca of fast food! It’s a spicy that progresses as you eat the sandwich. At first, you’re like, no biggie; by the last bite, you’ve got a little perspiration on the cheeks. I like to add their Buffalo Sauce to kick it up a notch! A welcomed addition to an already stellar fast food menu. Now, if only we could get them to open up for a bit on Sundays…

it was only available around Rodeo time. After a busy day of moving, we dropped in the I-10 location for lunch. It doesn’t get better than a lean chopped brisket sandwich, potato salad and coleslaw. Well, the loaded and stuffed baked potato isn’t a bad choice either! Extra sauce for dipping is a must. The food soaks it right up! The BBQ is smoky, it’s tender, it really hits the spot when a craving hits. I love Texas!
I’m already partial to the margarita – it’s my favorite in town. Made with real lime juice minus the triple-sec makes all the difference in flavor. It’s refreshing rather than tart and lingering. Craving tacos al carbon, the waiter suggested these off the dinner menu: tacos bistec. From the lunch menu, these wood grilled hanger steak tacos are AWESOME! Served on blue corn tortillas with a bit of onions, rajas, pico de gallo and a side of guacamole and salsa, these tacos taste phenomenal. The meat with the crunch of fresh pico and rajas asadas with onions is the perfect complement to my favorite margarita.

A FEW NEW AMBIENT RELEASES TO SHARE WITH YOU THIS MONTH. OPEN UP:
THE LOVE LANGUAGE Libraries (Merge) This is a big ass record. The drums are big and boomy, the guitars ring like they’ve been tuned through their amps to fill a ballroom, and the whole thing shimmers with a nice taste of Phil Spector (excepting a stereo mix). North Carolina native Stuart McLamb’s songs go back to the balladry of the ’50s and ’60s, but his voice wears the ’00s all over it, and in a way that cripples the songwriting to the point of missing the point. That delicate balance...
LoveLikeFire Tear Ourselves Away (Heist or Hit) Wait, this record is huge, too! But in a totally different way. LoveLikeFire actually released this last year in the UK, and that’s fitting; it subscribes directly to the shoegaze/Britpop aesthetic, all the while distancing from those genres by actually having the vocals up in the mix. And that works, as they’re a little too uppity (the inherent American element) to have the vocals buried, and Anne Yu’s voice works better when heard clearly than it would were it laundered away. Musically, they offer little in the way of dynamics, but it’s something that complements the vocals handily. Maybe one would draw a comparison to The Raveonettes. Actually, one could draw many comparisons. Nothing jumps out in its own way on the first few listens. The exception? “Stand In Your Shoes,” on which the vocal melody and guitars feel so effortless that they pull the song along in a way that gives you hope in this day and age of over-saturation.
TENNIS “South Carolina” b/w “Sea Farer” (Fire Talk) For all that talk above about bands ripping off aged genres and coopting them without any soul, there comes this limited edition 7” etched out of pure Denver honey. Tennis is a duo from Colorado who happen to be married and who have come from out of nowhere with a growing catalog of (again) Spectoresque pop gems – only they get the vocals, the production and (most of all) the heart right. “South Carolina” just may be the jam of the summer for those who don’t listen to the radio.

A few months ago, HERRADURA TEQUILA introduced its first ever brand ambassador – HALL OF FAMER EMMITT SMITH. Smith is the first celebrity athlete to participate in the over-140-year-old brand’s Buy-the-Barrel program. THE PROGRAM ALLOWS TEQUILA CONNOISSEURS TO ORDER THEIR VERY OWN HERRADURA DOUBLE BARREL REPOSADO. Each container is filled with specially crafted tequila reposado aged for an additional month, ensuring every ounce captures flavors and notes directly drawn from customer-selected barrels. Each yields 240 750ml bottles, which are adorned with personalized labels, including the purchaser’s name, number and bottling date. I had the opportunity to join various media outlets on the trip to tour the agave fields and meet the jimadores who have been taught the skill handed down from their fathers who learned the trade from their grandfathers and so on. Herradura Hacienda is a beautiful estate seeped with age-old traditions.
