t’s funny how some things just work out organically. That’s kind of what happened with this issue. From long-time contributing photographer Gabriella Nissen joining our team as Creative Director to the cover concept of local musicians sharing love stories and love songs. The overall flow and the people who are in it are all intertwined beautifully.

I love so many things about this issue! From all of the food information beginning with the story on page 14 about locally harvested and roasted coffee beans initiated by Matthew Toomey of Boomtown Coffee in The Heights. To the abundance of food bites in on our radar. And I am obsessed with Big & Juicy featured in this month’s Open, which covers new spots in town. If you’re still going strong with your health resolutions, you need to check out this gem. To ramen house Tiger Den in China Town – the place reminds me of New York. I LOVE it! And, hello, Chef’s Special Kevin Bryant of Eleven XI is charming. You’ll also notice the new look for Where to Live Now created by local illustrator and artist Paige Moore. We are so excited to have her on board as well. I am so excited I was asked to be one of the foodies creating a unique roll for RA Sushi’s Foodies Show Heart. On Thursday, February 13, a tasting will be hosted where I will compete against six other prominent writers and bloggers in a battle for my signature roll, created with a RA Sushi chef to win the chance to be added to the menu for 30 days. The public will serve as the judging panel during the event and if I win, a portion of the proceeds of sales will benefit my charity, Casa de Esperanza. We hope you’ll enjoy exploring your city as much as we enjoyed putting this month’s hip guide together! Happy Valentine’s Day!

Carroll joined the HGO Studio last season after winning first prize and the Audience Choice Award in HGO’s 2012 Eleanor McCollum Competition Concert of Arias. In summer 2013, she returned to Wolf Trap Opera to sing Corinna in Il viaggio a Reims. Recent honors include a 2012 award from the Sullivan Foundation, second prize in the Gerda Lissner Foundation competition and a regional Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions encouragement award. Future engagements include her debut at Washington National Opera and a return to the Glimmerglass Festival as Julie in Carousel. Favorite Love Song? “I’m an unashamed Disney enthusiast, so I’m going to go with Love, from Robin Hood. Aside from how cute the scene is in the movie (Maid Marian and Robin Hood, hand in hand, walking through a moonlit Sherwood Forest), it’s a simple and beautiful love song. The nonprofit builds charitable hearts by helping children in the Houston community learn about their world, appreciate the needs of others and create positive change through the hands-on learning opportunities for elementary aged and children as young as three to get involved and make a difference. FOOD +DRINK BOOMTOWN COFFEE #H-TOWN BEANS OWNER MATT TOOMEY SPILLS THE BEANS ON ROASTING A LOCAL CROP

OUSTON IS NOT THE USUAL PROVENANCE OF BOOMTOWN COFFEE’S BEANS, BUT WHEN OWNER MATT TOOMEY NOTICED THE BEANS AT THE COCKRELL BUTTERFLY CENTER WERE READY FOR HARVEST HE CALLED IT TO HORTICULTURIST ZAC SLAYTON’S ATTENTION. “Houston is not one of those regions where coffee grows. This is technically a first. Stayton has recreated an ecosystem in the Cockrell Butterfly Center,” he explains. The unexpected harvest comes from a 4-year-old plant. The blend’s name is the Blue Morpho Blend after a butterfly. Blue Morpho was roasted for Toomey by InerAmerican Coffee.

“It reminded me of something I’d had before,” he says of the small batch of Coffea arabica, which yielded about 30 cups of coffee. “I think the inherent quality is good.” Quality is top priority for Toomey, who opened Boomtown Coffee almost two years ago. “We’ve hit this stride, and I realized we don’t have downtime anymore,” he reveals of his growing business which now employs 17. Toomey and his team select their beans, which are roasted on site, through stringent methodology. “We order samples and brew them in different ways; we use cupping and taste the coffee hot, then cooled,” he elaborates. The final selection

usually comes from somewhere in South America, although Toomey admits he’s partial to Ethiopia. The career-barista relishes the unique stories behind all his beans. “Most people get their coffee and there’s not a lot of thought that goes into the story behind the coffee. The web of how coffee is produced, how many people it affects and how it’s tied to real lives – each coffee has its own unique story,” he says. Although Toomey has no plans to grow his own coffee plants any time soon, there is buzz about a second Boomtown location sometime in the not-so-distant future.

He thinks for a moment and suggests the meatloaf, which he says is a 12 out of 10. With that, I had to try it, and within minutes a huge tower arrives. After a few bites, the server came by and asked how it was. Giving an honest answer, I said it was a 7 or 8 out of 10, because while it was good, it fell a little short on seasoning. The establishment has an open kitchen, and the chef, who overheard the conversation, asked me to leave! I was caught between bewilderment and hysterics.

Named for the famous songbird it also references Houston music legend Sippie Wallace, known as the Texas Nightingale during her prime in the 1920s. Gateway Memorial City, a two-level center, sits just west of Memorial City Mall. The development boasts four new chef-driven restaurants: Vallone’s, namesake of legendary Houston restaurateur Tony Vallone, opened to the public at the beginning of December. Churrascos, on the second level, marks the fourth Churrascos and eighth Cordúa restaurant in the Houston area. It also opened in December and is led by Latin American cuisine pioneer Michael Cordúa and his son, Chef David Cordúa. KUU Restaurant is the first solo offering from Chef Adison Lee, protégé of famed celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa. SATISFYING A NEED FOR NOODLES

IN CASE YOU HADN’T NOTICED YET, RAMEN IS HOT. MY FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH REAL RAMEN CAME ON A RECENT THURSDAY NIGHT. NOW, I’M DISCOUNTING THE FIVE-FOR-ADOLLAR-PACKAGEDNOODLE-STAPLE FROM THE GROCERY STORE THAT HELPED SUSTAIN ME IN COLLEGE BACK DURING THE REAGAN ADMINISTRATION.

We’re talking about an entirely different experience here. My lovely dinner companion and I chose Tiger Den, the authentic ramen noodle restaurant on Bellaire in China Town. There are some interesting appetizers. Things like pork jowl, chicken skin and hearts. Small servings. Not filling, but potent and interesting. Mike Tran, the owner, told me that many ramen places in Japan are like tapas restaurants. People come in to hang out, have some grilled munchies, and a few beers, before scarfing down a bowl of noodles. That’s what Tran was hoping to create here, a friendly community spot. For the moment, though, it’s too early to identify “regulars.” People are coming from everywhere. Young and old, Eastern and Western, from all walks. experience the ramen. At capacity, Tiger Den can seat between 60 and 70 people. It’s a full house on this night. A lot of energy. Back to the tasty appetizers. The chicken skin is a crunchy and slightly chewy delicacy, skewered and grilled. The pork jowl is a salty treat, also grilled. The grilled lamb has a wasabi mayo. It’s excellent. After savoring the starters, the noodles come. Since I was a first-timer, I opted for the traditional Tonkotsu, the original silky pork noodle soup topped with chashu (roasted pork belly), ajisuke tamago (seasoned boiled egg), menma (seasoned bamboo shoots), cabbage, kikurage mushroom, scallion and fresh garlic. A big bowl of wonderfulness.

My dinner companion opted for the spicy miso version. Next time in, that’ll be my choice. Well, or the black garlic option. It’s all good. There are a few spots around town serving ramen. But things are about to get serious.

“When people eat here now, they only compare it to New York or LA,” said Tran. But he actually looks forward to new ramen restaurants opening – and apparently there are plans for several coming in the next year. “Competition will be good for everyone. ”When he started he thought he’d be open for lunch and all day, but there is too much prep. Tran’s approach requires you to boil the pork bone, for the broth, for around 30 hours. “You have to get the soup milky,” he says. “It takes time to get that creamy consistency.” The noodles are prepared in house as well. Mike estimates they prepare 400 servings a day. The process starts very early, before dawn, and finishes around a half hour before opening at 5pm. “You have to love it,” he says, stirring the thickening broth. “Everything takes time.” There are plans to expand the menu, add new exotic items, but for now, the fundamental ramen and yakitori are putting smiles on the faces of the continuous stream of noodle cravers. I highly recommend a visit.

Bright hues of blue fill the interior of the dining area and oyster bar as one of the main focal points. When I visited Caracol I grabbed an available seat at the bar during Happy Hour and was taken care of by Nas; he really knew the menu well and was able to offer great drink and food suggestions. Fat Cat Creamery has a special place in my heart. When I first started blogging, my blog partner and I created a signature ice cream flavor with the Cats for our 1-year anniversary party. The final product was a chocolate beer stout and candied bacon ice cream that was really, really delicious! The experience of getting to know the two passionate minds behind Fat Cat Creamery (Sarah and Jarvis) was one that I’ll savor forever, long after the pints of ice cream were gone. The Cats recently opened their first ice cream parlor on N. Shepherd in The Heights and it’s definitely worth a visit! a nice “bite” from the tamarind and the roasted spiced simple syrup; quite the choice for the chilly Houston night that I visited. The Gusanos, which may shock some, are sautéed, dried maguey worms. Once you get over the initial shock factor that you’re eating worms you’ll really enjoy this dish. Served taco style, I found this dish to be best when drizzled with the lime and topped with salsa. The Tostada de Atun Crudo was also packed with flavor. The tuna was very fresh and topped with a sour orange mayonnaise. The dining room quickly became packed with families enjoying the traditional Mexican flavors that Chef Ortega has become known for. Juicing has become more mainstream in the recent years. Drinks like Kale Yeah and Chatauranga Cowabunga appeal to everyone. I tried the Chatauranga Cowabunga, one of the most popular drinks, made with cucumber, pineapple, spinach, green apple, lemon and sage. It was easy to see why this drink is a favorite. The staff is insanely happy and always helpful with advice on what to order. There’s positive reinforcement everywhere. Places like this make getting your workout not only easier but more enjoyable, and the juice bar makes living healthy a no-brainer. I was eager to check out their Chataranga yoga schedule before I walked out Cowabunga Juice the door. If you’re similar to me, it could be somewhat intimidating as a beginner but they assure you that the classes are mixed with beginners and pros, a unique experience for sure. The space, the juice and the people all contribute to making this Juice Bar one of the hippest new spots in town. Now that the secret is out, I’m sure I’ll see you there. Namaste.

This family-owned business is the coolest running and fitness store in the country, in my opinion. The Lucas family was a big proponent of fitness long before it was cool. Mike Lucas is a great cattleman and 44 Farms customer. We definitely share a mutual admiration of each other’s businesses, and I really respect their involvement in the community through their support of races and charitable fitness events.

“THERE’S A NEW FIESTA IN THE MAKING AS WE SPEAK…”

“…IT’S OUT AT THE MOON TOWER.” UNLIKE MR. WOODERSON’S FIRST PARTY THAT NIGHT IN DAZED AND CONFUSED, HOUSTON’S MOON TOWER DIDN’T GET BUSTED … IT WENT ON HIATUS TO UPGRADE. THE FIELD PARTY ON THE EAST SIDE OF DOWNTOWN IS BACK, AND THIS FIESTA IS PERMANENT, HAPPENING 7 DAYS A WEEK, MY MAN. WHAT’S THAT? NEVER EXPERIENCED THE MOON TOWER INN? WELL, HOP IN YOUR T-BIRD AND HEAD OVER TO CANAL STREET BECAUSE IT’D BE A LOT COOLER IF YOU DID.

Moon Tower still sits on a huge grass lot full of picnic tables, fire pits, table tennis and random cedar posts. There is a covered seating section, but the party is out under the sun/stars. What’s new? Well, the new tap wall inside the main container (all the “buildings” are shipping containers) has up to 66 draft beers! The bathrooms are upgraded too. They also expanded the kitchen which will certainly help get some of the best dogs in town out quicker, and Moon Tower is now the only bona fide brewpub Houston – yep, they brew beer on site. Speaking of beer, Moon Tower’s got some good ones – like real good. Prairie Noir stout anyone?! So, not to confuse, the menu lays out the current offerings by type (lager, stout, lambics/ciders, Belgians, etc.) and bold typefaces the Texas breweries. Since you

came to party we highly recommended you eat some food. Buffalo, pheasant and dove are highlights of the dogs and the homemade case-free boudin “dog” put us in a daze. All from a kitchen built in a shipping container! Remember it’s still small and can get backed up – the “this ain’t fast food, shut up and wait” sign provides a subtle reminder.

Fariba Abedin’s large-scale geometric paintings are amazing. The five paintings give the effect of a blown-up kaleidoscope to the viewer. The rich saturation of color and the sharp, straight lines are soothing and happy. Abedin shares, “Since my childhood I have been exposed to the rich culture and art of Iran. I look back on all those beautiful geometric designs that I would see every day, whether it being in the architecture of the historic buildings or the mosques. I wondered how such gorgeous domes were built in the old times!” Her work is detail-oriented, and it’s easy to see her cultural influence. Her message is appealing: “My work is a representative of who I am and how I think. I believe life is not about war, but rather about optimism, beauty, love and mercy. Opening February 14, Memories of a Voyage: The Late Work of René Magritte continues its exploration beyond Magritte’s breakthrough years leading up to World War II. The Menil Collection will present a selection of works illuminating abiding interests and concerns of the artist and trace his continuous reinterpretation of themes. Often, Magritte expanded upon the iconography of his earlier work. Some of his newly created motifs − of people and places and things that defy laws of gravity and sense − are among the most recognizable and enduring of Magritte’s oeuvre, including the sky filled with bowler-hatted men in Golconda (1953) and the day-for-night streetscape of The Dominion of Light (1954). In addition to paintings, the exhibition will include rarely-seen preparatory drawings, gouaches (an increasingly important medium to Magritte during his late period) and sculptures such as two painted bottles (only 25 of which are known to exist). 2. Does a humid climate like Houston’s worry you when traveling with the violin? Well, when am I coming – early March? It shouldn’t be too humid, right? It’s not like it’s the middle of the summer. You’re laughing! Uh-oh. I spoke with a violin maker once who told me that one of the most interesting things about the violin is that there was no precedent. It was like the violin came out of the blue. Is that sort of the case with this violin, that when it was made, it was a different kind of thing? Well, that’s right – the violin in general, the earliest ones in the late 1500s – sort of came out of the blue. Now, by the 1720s, Stradivari is already 76 years old. But he was an inventor throughout his life, constantly experimenting and changing the shape of the violin. By the time he invented the model that I’m currently using, he hit the nail on the head. It still remains the most copied and perfect model of any violin ever made. And this is the one where it just kind of clicked. Yeah, they call it the perfect model. The perfect Stradivarius.

Bob scored the first homerun in the history of Houston baseball as a third baseman for the Colt 45s in 1962. In 1963 he hit a grand slam in honor of a boy from Arkansas named Bill Bradly who was in town for a series of eye surgeries after being blinded when lightning struck a nearby tree while he was drinking water from a fountain. While visiting Bradly, the 9year-old asked Aspromonte to hit a homer for him that night – and Aspromonte delivered.

AN OPEN CONVERSATION WITH JOANNE KING HERRING

THE BELLE OF BRAINS AND BRAWN When God made Joanne King Herring, perhaps our most famous Houstonian, he broke the mold. Simply put, there is no one like her. The larger than life socialite who played a not-so-small role in bringing down the Soviet Union (as portrayed by Julia Roberts in the movie Charlie Wilson’s War) has negotiated, dined and partied with kings and queens, presidents and prime ministers, legendary actors and internationally known artists. She also led her daytime talk show to national prominence, wrote a best-selling book and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help impoverished populations in our land and abroad. And though heartache occasionally befell her (poverty, divorce, death), youth, gratitude, optimism and exuberance remain. I sat down with this unparalleled thoroughbred and she was beyond poised, elegant and graceful. The rarest of rare, at 84, her couture cover girl looks were matched particularly by her intelligence, wit and strength. She is a woman other women could only aspire to be like and men could only aspire to have.

Harrison: WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT BEING A CHILD? Herring: What an interesting question. Time. I had time without every moment being scheduled. When you’re a child you need free time. Today’s children are overscheduled and to overschedule a child is to condemn them to a lifetime dictated by a clock. Harrison: WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AND WHAT HAS OVERCOMING IT TAUGHT YOU? Herring: Dyslexia. If I have any good quality, it’s analysis, which came from solving math problems as a dyslexic. I’ve had to analyze everything since I was a small child. I can take any problem, tear it apart and find different ways of solving it, which became my biggest asset. Harrison: YOU’RE EATING AT A TABLE WITH FIVE OTHERS, ALL OF WHOM ARE DECEASED, WHO ARE THEY? Herring: Einstein. Jesus. George Washington. Let’s see. I’m going to see my family again and I’m really looking forward to that, so Genghis Khan because he changed war. I knew Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan those two were unbelievable. Napoleon, because he changed the world.

Harrison: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE YOUR THREE LIFE-DEFINING MOMENTS? Herring: The days my children were born and the subsequent sweet thing those boys have done after. And then when I went broke; there was nothing in the bank. So many times, we fight to hold onto what we think we need. You find that all these material things don’t mean a thing. Others: When my husband proposed. When my mother cried because I got into National Honor Society. When I realized I have no future. Very life-defining because I realized I don’t have to save things. I wish I had done this a long time ago. I have no idea how long I will live, but no one does. It’s very freeing. Harrison: HOW DID YOU COME TO THAT REALIZATION? Herring: Well, because I am old. [laughs] I kept saying, “Well, when I get old… when I get old.” Well, I am old……er. [laughs] I love saying old-er. Harrison: WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN? Herring: My mother used to tell me, “There’s always going to be somebody richer, smarter, prettier, so don’t worry about it.” We must enjoy what we have and make the most of it. Don’t be jealous of other people. Envy is the most insidious thing you can have.

M. COHEN M. Cohen earned his first job stringing beads in a local jewelry store in a small beach village in North Israel. During his long working hours he began designing his own pieces. BHEESTIE BAG You got your phone wet! What to do? You can try to dry it out by putting it in uncooked rice or dusty cat litter. An easier – and cleaner – way is to drop it in a Bheestie Bag. This is an innovative tool that removes moisture when your electronics encounter a water mishap. Place your device in the bag immediately along with the packet of molecular sieve beads. These beads can selectively absorb gas and liquids. Seal the bag from 8 to 72 hours, depending on the moisture level. Bheestie cannot guarantee your gear can be saved but I have had good luck with a pool-drenched smartphone. Gadgets are also exposed to humidity, rain, heat and perspiration. You can also put your device in the bag daily to prevent moisture build-up. $18–30

MYND CALENDAR We are one month into the new year but it is not too late to get organized. Calendars are my favorite way to keep events and appointments straight, and the one I use now is an app that helps me get things done. Mynd is a free download for iOS mobile devices and very simple to set up as it works with all of the existing calendars on your phone. The home screen is Mynd’s way of showing you the most critical and interesting information about your day – a snapshot of what your day looks like. Mynd also displays useful information pertaining to your events, like the weather, distance to be traveled between events, alerts and how you’re spending your time. It can send you alerts for appointments, tell you when you need to leave (calculated by drive times), alert you to traffic conditions in your route plus it integrates with most navigation apps. Try this calendar app for one week and your 2014 should be a bit easier to manage.

BASIS HEALTH TRACKER Fitness bands and watches are a big craze right now. Most can monitor your heart rate and calorie expenditure – and most look like bland, waterproof sport watches. The Basis Health Tracker not only adds features to track your health but also looks great on your wrist. The Basis band has advanced sensors that continuously capture heart rate patterns and motion by activity, even perspiration and skin temperature. All of this data is captured 24/7 and the only thing required of you is to wear it. A very useful feature is its sleep analysis. EVENT ANNUAL HOLIDAY SCHMOOZE WHERE MITHOFF HOME

Legacy Community Health Services hosted their annual Holiday Schmooze at the beautiful home of Melissa and Michael Mithoff who co-hosted the event with Rosemarie and Matt Johnson. 250 guests were privy to the holiday decorations by Darryl Murchinson while sipping on cocktails and feasting on favorites prepared by Jackson Hicks and Company. The cocktail party raised over $200,000 to benefit Legacyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highly regarded healthcare programs â&#x20AC;&#x201C; from their maternity and pediatric services to their social and medical services for people living with HIV/AIDS.

COFFEE HOUSE THE WHO: Art League Houston shares its building with the visually appealing Inversion Coffee House, or maybe it’s the other way around. Intellects, Montroseans, wifi fans, lovers of art installations and friends catching up fill Inversion’s inviting yet modern interior. A unique “couch” and plenty of tables and bar seating keep everyone from falling all over each other. The friendly staff and outside seating also add to the experience. THE BREW: We got a latte special drinks here. Using locally roasted Katz Coffee beans, Inversion has all the basics including pour overs, blended drinks and smoothies, but they get artistic with the lattes. For the winter, the Gingerbread latte, Honey Badger, Cherry Cobbler and a few other options help enhance the spirit of the season. There is also a consistent list of ‘special’ drinks and we recommend the strong and interestingly named White Librarian (iced toddy brew with chocolate and half & half). THE FOOD: Standard fare (think muffins, pastries, bagels and fruit) plays well with one of the most consistent offerings of food trucks in town. Many days up to 3 local food trucks hang like art on the wall out in the parking lot. On our most recent visit, Breakfast Burritos and Bernie’s Burger Bus were the trucks du jour.
