uly has to be a wonderful month, what with fireworks and celebration on the 4th; it’s the perfect way to kick off the month! Celebrate at Discovery Green, at the Kemah Boardwalk or The Woodlands – there are several celebrations throughout town. Check out our blog for a full listing of things going on in your neck of the woods! Plus email us your favorite celebratory pics to phoneshot@002mag.com.

It’s Anti-Boredom Month and sometimes in Houston, it has nothing to do with boredom, it’s the heat that keeps us from doing much. But there is so much going on in and around the city – some involve the heat – but there’s water close by to take a dip in.

I’M KEEPING IT SHORT AND SWEET THIS MONTH SO YOU CAN START PLANNING YOUR BUSY MONTH.

DINE WRITE

NOT THE USUAL WOODROW’S WOODROW’S HEIGHTS

1

By Jeff Lane

Photography by Nicole Kestenbaum

I

HADN’T HAD A CAJUN FOOD EXPERIENCE IN A WHILE, SO RECENTLY I VISITED THE WOODROW’S HEIGHTS ON DURHAM. A COUPLE TIMES. IT WAS A CONVENIENT SPOT TO MEET A FEW FRIENDS AFTER WORK AND DIVE INTO SOME CRAWFISH. Now, perhaps you’ve frequented one or more Woodrow’s around town, but this place is different. First of all, it’s located in the very building that was once Floyd’s. And everybody loved Floyd’s. Loyalists have raved about his devotion to authentic Cajun cooking, the freshest ingredients, local food, etc. Well, if the menu, and the bar, is any indication, the Heights Woodrow’s is of the same ilk. Raj, the man at the helm of Woodrow’s Heights, has the same commitment to Gulf seafood and local suppliers. And great beer, too. More on that in a bit. When I arrive, my friends, one a full-on crawfish connoisseur, are already up to their elbows in the spicy tails and claws. As I sink my teeth into my first, I’m rewarded. Tender, moist, just enough spice. But I realize I’m not going to get my share. My buddy’s style is methodical and efficient. No wasted effort. His lady friend is not the machine he is, but she’s still more adept than I am. And manages to down her crawfish with class and grace. Not sure how to

14. july 13 | www.002mag.com

do that. But anyway, not being the savvy veteran of the tail-twisting, head-sucking arts, no way I could keep up. Which was fine, since that left room for some wonderfully rich crab cakes. Rich enough to make me feel guilty for eating them. But not enough to stop me. And then the Gulf Shrimp a’Trois, which includes grilled, fried and stuffed shrimp. And a bowl of seafood gumbo. Now one simply cannot tackle all this good food without proper liquid. Fortunately, Raj and his team take the beverage thing seriously. On tap I found Abita Turbo Dog, a personal favorite, as well as several other Abita brews. I also spied Buffalo Bayou’s 1836. And their menu on the wall behind the bar included wonderful selections from No Label (Katy) and Lone Pint (Magnolia). I heard Real Ale was coming in the following week. And I got the chance to sample something new, Lagunitas IPA, from California. Excellent.

1. Woodrows’s Heights | 2. Crawfish 3. Oysters Pedro

3

It was all so satisfying that after I recovered from my Cajun comfort food coma – the following week – I returned for another assault on the menu. This time I ordered some blackened boudin. Now I grew up with some friends from the Lake Charles area. So I was, from an early age, exposed to good boudin. But this was different. They took something already delicious and gave it a whole other level of yummy. My favorite item, so far, is Oysters Pedro, a devilishly good creation from a gentleman tending bar this night. It is nothing short of love on the half shell. It’s oysters with spinach dip and bacon and Parmesan. Simply amazing.

SAMPLE MENU headliner • Crawfish $5.99/lb. starters • Fried Pickles $5 • Boudin Link (Original or Jalapeno, blackened or grilled) $7 • Fried Gator $11 cajun faves • Jambalaya (chicken and sausage or seafood) $13 • Etouffee (crawfish or shrimp) $15 entress • Shrimp a’Trois $21 • Crawfish Pasta $14 A MUST TRY • Oysters Pedro $10

For my entrée I went with the grilled red snapper, which was so fresh it may have been caught about the time I was biting into my first oyster. Of course, it’s entirely possible I simply lost all sense of time and space. It’s a great place to catch a game. Plenty of good screens. On that second visit, I supped at the bar and watched the first half of Game 1 of the NBA championship series. The mood was festive and fun. Patrons at the bar jawing with, even needling, the staff. Like family. This could easily become a regular haunt.

What makes Ripe Cuisine a standout, for me, is Stephanie’s ability to use ingredients that may be unfamiliar to some people in a way that is relatable and tasty.

IF YOU KNOW ME, YOU KNOW THERE ARE TOO MANY THINGS I LOVE ABOUT HOUSTON TO MENTION ON THIS PAGE – OR IN THIS MAGAZINE, FOR THAT MATTER. THIS LIST WASN’T EASY TO MAKE, BUT HERE IT IS: A LIST OF THE TOP 5 REASONS I THINK HOUSTON’S HOTTER THAN EVER THIS SUMMER.

We’re embracing change and making progress. With the passing of Prop B in the last election, we’re blazing bike trails and adding green space all over town. We may be spread out, but, damn, if we can’t be bikeable anyway. Check out what I could fit in front of my lens at Free Press Summer Fest (and this was just a fraction of the bikes parked outside). Take advantage of the Heights Bike Trail; ride downtown to pop into Goro & Gun for a bite to eat.

With Houston’s One Bin for All victory in the Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge, we’re leading the way in recycling innovation and continuing to add to an ever-growing list of sustainability accomplishments. I’m proud we’re one of few cities in the nation that has a Director of Sustainability on staff. If you don’t know Laura Spanjian’s name, it’s time to learn it. (And if you don’t recycle, know that we’re coming to get you.)

We’re giving back. Houston is truly embracing the social good movement. We’re taking action and making things happen. Take Neighborhood Centers’ For Good Movement. They’re asking everyone in Houston “What are YOU doing FOR GOOD?” through a traveling art installation that’s making its way around the city and the website iamforgood.org.

It’s a challenge so many Houstonians are taking seriously. We could use a little more of that.

We’re enjoying life! And for me, a big part of that includes food and entertainment. We take our title as a culinary capital seriously, and incredible new restaurants are popping up every day. Topping my list of current favorites is the Pass (of Pass & Provisions). It’s my go-to recommendation when someone asks me where they should go for a special occasion – or just special food. (Who needs an occasion for that?) I’m also a sucker for Blacksmith (biscuits, please), Sparrow (pull up to the bar) and Dolce Vita (timeless). And after dinner? TUTS, Catastrophic Theater, Cactus Music and Fitzgerald’s are gems, not to be missed. They’re delivering the absolute best in theater and music!

CLUB/LOUNGE REVIEW D&T DRIVE INN

THE NEEDLE IN THE HAYSTACK

W

E FOUND IT. WELL, WE DIDN’T FIND IT, BUT THESE GUYS SURE DID! PRETTY QUICKLY AFTER A DOWN HOUSE MANAGER SPENT A FEW NIGHTS DRINKING AT NEARBY ICEHOUSE HE REALIZED HOW GOOD THIS “FIND” REALLY WAS. SOON, DOWN HOUSE’S OWNERS JOINED HIM ON A REGULAR BASIS AND, WELL, THEY DECIDED TO BUY THE ICEHOUSE. AFTER SOME RENOVATING WHICH TOOK JUST OVER A YEAR, D&T DRIVE INN WAS REOPENED FOR ALL OF US TO ENJOY.

D&T is the second house on the right when you go south on Enid from W. world and the occasional surprise. No beer drinker will be disappointed. TABC Cavalcade. Two things should jump out at you when reading that sentence. Where allows icehouses to serve not more than 14% or 17% wine. Clear as mud, am I the F is Enid St.? It’s just west on W. Cavalcade off 45, north of Downtown. The other right? Anyway, what that means for D&T is one red, one white and one thing? D&T is surrounded by houses. Actually sometime before 1965 when D&T bubble/mimosa offering. They also have a frozen shandy (beer & lemonade) and first opened as a true Texas icehouse (literally selling ice), it was probably a house frozen sangria, both house made. You know what else is sharp? D&T offers ‘set-ups’ too. Somewhere along the way it turned into what we know an icehouse to be these meaning you can bring your own bottle of swill (whatever wets your whistle) and days – a good solid beer joint. This quality doesn’t escape the new D&T, honestly D&T has your favorite non-alcoholic mixer ready to go. Another interesting note because D&T was a solid icehouse before the recent update. Virtually open air (by about the beverage program: Any beer D&T sells can be bought ‘to go.’ Growlers, way of sizable garage doors on the front and back), a wall of taps that mean busibottles and cans. We took home a prized Hitachino Nest bottle because why not. ness, a bar top made from a tree that sadly had to be cut down during renovations and a back that rivals the best beer gardens. This D&T place has something unique. D&T for now relies on food trucks (and a ‘hot nuts’ vending machine) to keep Something we rarely find in bars these days but can’t quite put our hands on. Well, patrons happy. Pretty soon that will all change, but we bet they keep the ‘hot nuts.’ the bar “has a relaxing and inviting soul,” manager (and the man responsible for A line chef from Down House will be moving over after crafting a specific menu with the find) Jason Moore tells us during our discussion of D&T’s histoDown House chef Benjy Mason. This is great news for all of us. The ry while sitting out back on a humid Sunday. That’s it! Soul. D&T small kitchen will be situated in the front of the bar and is sure to 1307 Enid Street, 77009 has soul. Right when you walk in, it’s … right. Relaxing? Once you offer some great food. 713.868.6165 hit the patio, you’ll see. The whole place, it’s just comfortable. We can’t help but remember Moore telling us how the bar “was an Mon-Fri: 3pm – Midnight Enjoying a lazy Sunday is easy when you have 50 draft beers to extension of ourselves” – maybe that’s why the place feels just Sat: 11am – 1am choose from. A few beers like PBR and Bud Light made the list right. But, come on, man. The bar is already super-cool and now Sun: 11am – Midnight because no good icehouse operates without them. The other you tell us this! Jealous, we are. Houston, we found your needle. roughly 45 beers range from special one-off beers, many of www.dandtdriveinn.com Houston’s finest, quality Texas beers, fine beers from around the

SAVE THE DATE FOR HOUSTON RESTAURANT WEEK AUGUST 1 – SEPTEMBER 2, 2013. This year marks the 10th year anniversary of what started as a week-long fund raiser and is now a month-long food odyssey. Founded in 2003 by Cleverley Stone, Houston Restaurant Weeks raised over $1.22million for the Houston Food Bank from the over 253,000 meals served at the 169 participating restaurants. The result: The 3.66 million meals provided for those who are food insecure made Houston Restaurant Weeks 2012 the largest single fundraising event for the Food Bank and the largest restaurant weeks of its kind in the United States. www.HoustonRestaurantWeeks.com

ANS OF LAWNDALE’S THE BIG SHOW CAN ENJOY MORE ART BY UP-AND-COMERS AT THE SALON DES REFUSÉS – AN EXHIBITION FEATURING THE WORKS THAT WERE REJECTED AT THE LAWNDALE EVENT.

Based on an 1863 Paris exhibit of the same name, the new version offers local artists an opportunity to display their work in a gallery setting. “The original salon of 1863 consisted of artwork rejected from the official Paris Salon. Exhibiting artists of the Salon des Refusés of 1863 included Paul Cézanne, Édouard Manet, Camille Pissarro and James Whistler, among others,” explains founder Emily Sloan. Submissions for The Big Show come from within a 100mile radius of Houston. Artists can bring up to three works of art that have not previously been shown, and a guest juror selects work for the show. The process is unique because the works are judged on-site. “For The Big Show, artworks are delivered to Lawndale Art Center for on-site jurying as opposed to being viewed from online submissions as is the case with many juried shows,” says Sloan. The artists whose work is selected have a shot at one of three cash prizes. An artist in her own right, Sloan decided to launch the exhibition project in 2010. “I was also the artist-in-residence of a hair salon, so it seemed fitting,” she adds.

Sloan dabbles in drawing, sculpture and painting, but is best known for using a humorous approach to social and environmental issues. Her installations sometimes border on the macabre, as in Funeral Party, a one-day faux-funeral that took place on January 1. “Funeral Party is an interactive performance project exploring death rituals, customs and comforts. It has taken place twice and was different in mood each time,” she tells us. “I’m also creating some blood and gore for filmmaker Bunny Watts.” In keeping with the unconventional theme, Sloan claims she is part of The Southern Naptist Convention, a somewhat obscure and questionable religious sect. “It celebrates, encourages and explores creative approaches of napping. Our motto is: “Let ye that have never fallen asleep in church cast the first pillow,” she reveals. Sloan doesn’t completely shun the mainstream, though. “I’m working on some pieces for a show organized by Gus Kopriva that will be traveling to Egypt, then Greece. Also, The Kenmore (my studio mini-fridge) will be a part of the Houston Center for Photography’s show See Food, organized by Natalie Zelt and opening in the fall,” she says.

TAMARIE COOPER’S OLD AS HELL! July 12 – August 24, Wed-Sat @ 8pm Tamarie’s back with the next installment of her series of super-popular, original musicals, but this time there’s a problem. At the end of the opening number, the Theatre Police arrive threatening to close down the show. They cite Tamarie for being in violation of the Ingénue Code, which relegates all actresses over the age of 40 to play character roles like nosy neighbors, crazy aunts and dotty maids. The only way to save the show is to recast the role of Tamarie with a younger actress. Removed from her own show, Tamarie attempts to connect with the youth of today in order to demonstrate her suitability to play the role of herself. The Catastrophic Theatre (1119 East Frwy., Houston, TX 77002)- Pay What You Can. www.catastrophictheatre.com

Join The Flamenco Poets Society for a romantic evening of poetry and music. This summer they are celebrating the love poems of Pablo Neruda, written to his wife, Matilde Urrutia. Neruda has always been cherished for the earthy sensuality and eroticism of his love prose written against the backdrop of Isla Negra, the sea, white sand, delicate flowers, the hot sun and the salty smell of the ocean. His poems are expressed with brilliant images and simplicity, and in 1971 he received the Nobel Prize for literature. The program will feature Randy Cordero, flamenco guitarist; Paco Garrigues, cante; and Ben Lind, poetry reading. (Bilingual reading in Spanish and English.) 18. ASIA SOCIETY TEXAS CENTER www.asiasociety.org  Universe Is Flux: The Art of Tawara Yûsaku, on view thru September 15. This exhibit is the first large-scale exhibition in this country of the famed Japanese artist’s paintings. It presents an artist whose evocative gestural paintings convey the world as unstable and constantly changing. Highlights of the exhibition include several renditions of the character “ichi,” which means “one” in Japanese. For the artist, it signifies more than a number. It is “the ‘One’ to which all things are ultimately reducible. It is the ‘One’ of the absolute world.” Traditionally executed in a single stroke in calligraphy, Tawara painted these ichi with his method of layering innumerable brushstrokes.

GISH at the MOVIES

Ah, July, the month of independence! It’s also a great month for independent film. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (www.mfah.org) kicks it all off with a visit to New York’s hippest ‘hoods in “Greenwich Village: Music That Defined a Generation” (pictured, 7/4, 1pm; 7/5, 7pm; 7/12, 7pm). This fine doc features archival footage and new live performances from the likes of politically minded musical giants that shaped the 1960s and 1970s such as Pete Seeger, Kris Kristofferson, Don McLean, Peter Yarrow, Arlo Guthrie, Lucy and Carly Simon, Tom Chapin and Judy Collins, among dozens of other music luminaries.

Remember “Pink Flamingos”? “Polyester” and “Lust in the Dust”? Those and many other films star the charming drag queen “Divine,” whose film “Hairspray” (with perky Ricky Lake!) is the annual outdoor, family-friendly and free “Julydoscope” screening at Discovery Green (www.discoverygreen.com) that kicks off this year’s QFest (www.q-fest.org). It’s being co-presented again with the Houston Cinema Arts Society (www.cinemartsociety.org) and TUTS (www.theatreunderthestars.org) and will screen on Saturday, July 20. “I Am Divine” (pictured, 7/25), the new documentary on the dee-vine drag queen formerly known as Harris Glenn Milstead, is the opening night film for this year’s Festival and it should be quite a peek into the life of the gal John Waters would marry if he could. Another annual festival hitting the screens this month is the “Summer Israeli Film Series” at the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center (www.erjcc.org). On 7/25, they will be screening the pilot episode of “Prisoners of War/Hatufim” (pictured), the original Israeli series upon which the TV show “Homeland” is based and Israel’s all-time highest-rated drama. Even more engrossing and powerful than its U.S. offspring, the episode starts with the return of three soldiers who had been in captivity for 17 years. Two of them – Nimrod and Uri – come back alive; one – Amiel – returns in a coffin. The series follows Nimrod and Uri and the people closest to them as they attempt to go back to the lives they were yanked out of 17 years ago.

RECORDING

GRAMMYS AND GREYHOUNDS ERIC JARVIS

Interview by Lance Scott Walker

Photography by Anthony Rathbun

T

HIS PAGE IS ALWAYS OSTENSIBLY ABOUT MUSIC, BUT THE CONVERSATIONS CAN GO ANYWHERE. PRODUCER AND ENGINEER ERIC JARVIS HAS BECOME A HOUSTON INSTITUTION OVER THE LAST DECADE SINCE HE LEFT A COMPUTER JOB AND FORMED HIS OWN COMPANY, CRUSHPAD. DURING THAT TIME, HE ALSO EARNED THE TITLE OF VICE PRESIDENT OF THE TEXAS CHAPTER OF THE GRAMMY AWARDS, ALONGSIDE PRESIDENT PAUL WALL. BUT HE’S QUICK TO POINT OUT THAT IT’S NOT ALL GLAMOUR, AS HE’LL OFTEN GO STRAIGHT FROM THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BEACHFRONT TO THE BACK OF A GREYHOUND BUS BARRELING ACROSS TEXAS TO WORK WITH UNCLE TUPELO/WILCO/GOURDS MAINSTAY MAX JOHNSTON. AND THE GREYHOUND CONNECTION DOESN’T END THERE...

What determines if a greyhound is cat-friendly? Do they get scared or do they get aggressive? Oh, they act like they’ll kill it. You know almost instantly if they wanna kill it or if they just don’t care. Sometimes they wanna play with them, sometimes they wanna eat them, sometimes they don’t give a shit. So anyway, our cat has that job.

So you’re working on a record with Max Johnston? Yeah, The Gourds are in Austin but Max is in Dallas, so basically I go up on the Greyhound, and we work for four or five days, or as much as time allows. That was kind of his idea. That’s how he does The Gourds tour – if they’re going to do some dates, he takes the Greyhound from Dallas to Austin. He was telling me about that and I said, “Man, that sounds like a drag.” He’s like, “Nah, they have Wi-Fi now, they have power outlets so you can work or whatever, or you can just sleep.” I thought that didn’t sound like a bad idea; and also, my wife and I have two greyhounds and have fostered about 30 of them. All former racing dogs? Yeah, exactly. There’s a local organization here called GPA – Greyhound Pets of America, Houston

36. july 13 | www.002mag.com

– and they’re a clearing house for dogs that come in from all over the country and now are up for adoption. So we’ve had two at a time for several years now, and we’ve fostered about 30 of them. And what’s even crazier is when they come in from wherever they come from and before they can go up on the adoption board online, they gotta figure out if they’re cat-friendly or not. So we have this weird-ass, crazy cat, and she’s the guinea pig, so my wife takes her up there a couple times a month and she tests ... she walks amongst the lions and she tests to see if they’re cat-friendly. So we’re kind of involved. You know, we give our time and we cattest the dogs and we kind of bring them to finishing school here at Chateau Jarvis where they come and hang out with our mellow greyhounds and they learn how to be dogs before they go up for adoption.

Max has had a really long career for this to be his first solo record. How did it come around? His dad has been talking about this for a while, and he said that Max had a bunch of great songs queued up that were not really Gourds songs and he wanted me to produce it. So Max and his father and I have been talking about it for months and months, maybe a year or so. And we finally nailed down the first pre-production session – I rented a car and drove up there and Max was like, “Dude, I don’t have any songs.” At first, it was terrifying – because I thought he had a bunch of material, but he didn’t. And then, when I got up there, he brought literally a wadded up piece of paper with two stanzas of just kind of raw, stream of consciousness lyrics on there. But they were good. So the big surprise has been that he’s not only a gifted musician, but he’s a great writer and has a really cool singing voice. And we’re writing the record from the ground up. I’m actually writing with him. It’s definitely a Max record. It’s Max’s record, but he shows up with a germ of an idea and we run with it. So on the way up and on the way back, I just sit on that Greyhound bus and work.

FIRST GRADUATING CLASS

The last time we checked, the freshman class at Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School of Houston was just getting started. Four years later, 100% of the 60 grads are headed for college. “They signed up to go to this school that they had never seen,” recalls Jacquelyn Olexa, Associate Director of Communications and Public Relations. “They put their faith in us. We’ll always have a place in our hearts for them,” she says.

The Catholic school serves students from economically disadvantaged families. “We started with just the freshman class. We added a grade every year,” explains Olexa. Located in Southeast Houston, the school took over the former Mount Carmel High School building. “During the

time it had been uninhabited, Hurricane Ike had hit and it was just in really bad shape. We renovated one hallway at a time as we were adding a grade each year. Now we have over 400 students. The building is completely renovated. And we didn’t have air conditioning; now we have air conditioning!” adds Olexa.

panies. “BP is one (company) that signed on last year that we were so excited about. We are trying to get more into the healthcare industry. We have Memorial Hermann and Methodist, and St. Luke’s has actually signed on for next year, which we are excited about. We have so many kids who want to go into healthcare,” Olexa says.

Part of a network of 25 schools around the country, Cristo Rey Jesuit has a Corporate Work-Study Program, where four students share one entry-level position at corporations around the city. This program pays for more than 50% of the students’ tuition. “We started when the recession hit, so it’s kind of miraculous that we were able to get so many companies to sign on,“ says Olexa of the 112 participating com-

The companies wrote many of the student’s recommendation letters, and some students have been promised internships and jobs post-college. With a cumulative $2.7 million in college scholarships to date for this class of seniors, “IT’S BEEN A PROVEN MODEL OF SUCCESS,” says Olexa.

I all too commonly see mothers and daughters dressed alike, but there’s something when a father and son do it. Love these swim trunks and can’t wait to see my boys in them this summer on the beach. (Follow my blog to see them in a few weeks! www.002mag.com/editorsblog)

THIS MERCURY GLASS CANDLE WILL PROVIDE THE PERFECT GLOW AS DAY TURNS INTO NIGHT. CAPRI BLUE CANDLE AT ANTHROPOLOGIE.

I love DIY projects. I’ve loved them forever; it’s just the projects have gotten bigger with age. The latest one involved decking our whole back yard. FAT FINDS

BEACHY CHIC Styled by MarziFat Photographed by Sofia Van Der Dys

SUMMER IS OFFICIALLY HERE SO BRING ON THE BEACH VACATIONS AND POOL PARTIES. MAYBE IT’S THE ANNUAL TRAVELS TO GREECE THAT HAVE MADE ME AMP UP MY SUMMER/BEACH ATTIRE. (MY FIRST TRIP NINE YEARS AGO SAW ME STICKING OUT LIKE A SORE THUMB, AND NOT IN A GOOD WAY.) THEY SEEM TO HAVE PERFECTED THE SEXY-EFFORTLESS-BOHOBEACH LOOK. SINCE THEN, I’VE STEPPED UP MY GAME AND YOU SHOULD TOO! Most of us have a shirt similar to this in our closet. It’s perfect for layering over your one-piece or bikini top and let a little sneak peek through the top. Pair it with these Free People shorts, or a maxi skirt would be a great alternative as well. Complete the look with wedges or flats

Lanston shirt: www.shopbop.com shorts @ Free People | shoes @ Jimmy Choo For more outfit ideas and inspired monochromatic ideas, follow us on Instagram! (002houston, valencarla, marzifat) during the month of July.

JEWELRY: FatFinds These look like they were snapped up in travels to a far exotic destination. Perfect for completing the look. To buy, email marzi@marzifat.com.

I fell in LOVE with this dress when I saw it. It’s the perfect swimsuit cover-up. It comes in this print and solid black. From the front it’s a simple maxi dress... and then you turn around and BOOM, there’s an amazing cut-out in the back. And this is no one-hit-wonder – you can also wear it for a night on the town by switching out the undergarments and adding a pair of heels. ACACIA dress @ www.ishine365.com

DESTINATION

AMERICAN RIVIERA SANTA BARBARA

By Sandra Ramani

L

IFE IS PRETTY IDYLLIC IN SANTA BARBARA. SPREAD OUT OVER 100 ACRES ALONG CALIFORNIA’S CENTRAL COAST, BORDERING THE PACIFIC OCEAN AND JUST TWO HOURS NORTH OF LOS ANGELES, THIS HISTORIC, CELEB-FAVORITE TOWN BOASTS THE NICKNAME “AMERICAN RIVIERA” FOR ITS PICTURESQUE MIX OF SUN, SEA AND MEDITERRANEAN STYLE. SPEND JUST A COUPLE DAYS BASKING IN THE BREEZY LOW HUMIDITY AND WANDERING THE CITRUS TREE AND HIBISCUS FLOWER-LINED STREETS AND IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY THE AREA HAS LONG BEEN A FAVORITE GETAWAY AND SECOND HOME SPOT, WHY NOTABLE CREATIVE BUSINESSES ARE BASED HERE, AND WHY THE RESTAURANT PATIOS ARE ALMOST ALWAYS FILLED WITH PATRONS SOAKING UP THE GOOD LIFE.

In recent years, the Santa Barbara region has also become a noted food and wine hotspot, with farm-to-table-focused eateries in town, and over 125 vineyards and wineries in the adjacent Happy Canyon, Sta. Rita Hills, Santa Ynez and Santa Maria counties. (You might remember the area from the movie “Sideways.”) Add the recent, long-awaited re-opening of the El Encanto resort, and there’s never been a better time to spend a long weekend in this West Coast gem. www.santabarbaraca.com AN ICON REBORN Set up on the hills above Santa Barbara, with views out to the ocean, El Encanto is the town’s oldest hotel, with roots going back to 1913. For much of the 20th century, the collection of Craftsman- and Mission-style bungalows was a favorite with travelers – including Old Hollywood stars like Clark Gable – while the terrace restaurant and bar were go-tos for locals. Mention the hotel to a Santa Barbara native today and you’re sure to hear how his parents got married there, or how it was the site of many special family occasions. Then, in 2007, the lights went dark. After being purchased by Orient-Express Hotels (whose other properties include Hotel Cipriani in Venice and Maroma in Mexico), El Encanto underwent a multi-year, multimillion dollar renovation that stayed true to the property’s historically significant (and landmark-protected) architecture, while also upgrad-

DRIVEWAY

ing it to a 21st-century five-star resort. Reopened this March, El Encanto includes 92 bungalows spread out among vibrant gardens and tiled courtyards; each stylishly appointed room is unique, though many boast original details and perks like fireplaces, private terraces, heated bathroom floors and clawfoot tubs. Just below a wisteria tree-lined lily pond sits an ocean-view swimming pool, and there’s an on-site spa offering treatments using natural lines like Amala, Osea and the locally made Grapeseed Company. Led by Executive Chef Patrice Martineau, the dining room, terrace and fireplace lounge serve a flavorful, Asia-meets-California menu featuring lots of local ingredients – including cheese made from milk from Ellie, the hotel’s own cow. And just like in decades past, you’ll find scores of locals enjoying the view from the top. www.elencanto.com WHERE TO EAT Santa Barbara is brimming with noteworthy restaurants; Here are two favorites: WINE CASK Set in a historic building, this local legend celebrates the best of regional wine and produce. Grab a seat on the terrace for a lunch of veggiepacked salmon salads, filet mignon enchiladas and Greek, Thai and “Taco Truck”-flavored flatbreads. www.winecask.com CIELITO Under a gleaming tin ceiling, this pan-Mexican favorite offers a gourmet take on regional small plates; think pork belly quesadillas, duck confit huaraches and mango guacamole. There’s also a raw/ceviche bar, and long list of tequilas and cocktails – including a serrano-infused margarita. www.cielitorestaurant.com

WHAT TO DO Take in the area’s historic sites and notable architecture – including the Courthouse, Mission and rose garden – with a Santa Barbara Trolley Tour. The company also offers trolley tours through the Santa Ynez wine country. www.sbtrolley.com Shop the downtown boutiques; main thoroughfare State Street is lined with both local and chain shops, and will lead you right down to the beach. Just off State, Chocolate Maya is a resident favorite for the creatively flavored truffles. If you can’t get out to explore the nearby vineyards, the Urban Wine Trail is the next best thing. Visit www.urbanwinetrailsb.com for a map of the in-town tasting rooms of top local winemakers like Grassini Family Vineyards and Margerum Wine Company.

Designer Nike Karlsson was inspired by industrial furniture from the early 20th century, especially the so-called medical cabinets, where medicine and medical supplies were kept. The glass-door cabinet with glass allow for display storage of china in a dining room, or as an apothecary in a bathroom. They would work well in a walk-in closet or as storage for some of your favorite things.

TOOLS AND GADGETS

DRAFTMARK HOME TAP SYSTEM Who doesn’t enjoy a cold draft beer, especially in the summer? Instead of bellying up to your local bar you can now sip on draft beer from your refrigerator. The Draftmark is a simple and lowmaintenance tap system that puts beer fans in complete control of their draft beer experiences at home, from choosing the style of beer to pulling their very own tap handle. It takes up about the same amount of space as a “fridge pack” of soda and uses onegallon refills. Using Draftmark is easy: just fill, chill and pour fresh beer. The pressurized system removes the need for additional CO2 , and each refill comes with its own spout, which eliminates any beer line cleaning.Current selections of beer include Budweiser, Bass Pale Ale, Michelob AmberBock, Shock Top and Goose Island. The beer stays fresh for 30 days once tapped … if you don’t drink it all by then. Tap system – $49.99 | Refills – $14.99 (average)

PRINTSTIK Thanks to the convenience of laptops and smartphones, many of us are working while we are mobile. Printing is now easily done on the road with portable devices like the Planon PrintStik. The PrintStik is a small, fullpage portable printer. It can connect to your laptop and smartphones via Bluetooth. The device is remarkably tiny – only about 1”x2”x11” – with 20 pages of paper inside making it easy to carry in a coat pocket, laptop or netbook bag, or purse. There’s no need for external power as it runs on batteries. Resolution can be adjusted up to 400dpi and can push out 3 pages per minute. This provides a solution for mobile executives, field workers, students and anyone who prints away from the office. You can now print regular-sized sheets of paper anywhere. $199-$399

HP ENVY X2 The convergence of laptops and tablets is getting closer. So much so that a new line of hardware called “convertible devices” is on the market. These mostly consist of a tablet and a keyboard docking station. The Envy X2 from HP is as sleek as they come. When the tablet and dock are connected, the device looks like a thin laptop. It acts like a typical laptop running Windows® 8 with an 11.6” display and full-size keyboard. But pop the latch and the screen detaches from the docked keyboard and it becomes a touchscreen tablet. It’s lightweight and has two cameras, plus the volume and power controls are exactly where you place your fingers on the back, which comes in handy. Battery life is great as the tablet has about 10 hours per charge and the dock has another 4 hours. This is one great solution for people looking to buy both a laptop and tablet. Starting at $649
