e are officially in the throes of a Houston summer. Congratulations, you just have the rest of summer to go through. I have to first and foremost apologize at the mistake we made last month running CARLA VALENCIA DE MARTINEZ the incorrect crossword grid. I never realized how passionate the email, mail and voicemail would be. Although I welcome constructive criticism, you left me no way to personally apologize for ruining your day! We hope you won’t give up on us and will continue to pick us up, as we will continue to strive to be perfect for you month after month. So chillax, put your legs up, pour yourself something good to drink, and enjoy. If something’s wrong, just email me: c.valencia@002mag.com; I’d love to fix it if I can. The home+design issue has a little bit for everyone. There’re some green stories, some easy fixes to make your abode even better, and we catch up with a few local creatives who share the space in which they work. And if you’re still floating on World Cup fever like us, don’t miss the MLS All-Star game here in Houston this month. Turn to page 74 for the details. We are super excited about the 002deals on page 40 where designers, websites and restaurants offer you special deals for the month of July. I can’t wait to use a few! Plus if you’re not a friend of Facebook or following us on Twitter, you’re going to miss some great freebies in this issue throughout the month of July.

SANDRA GUNN has been a top producing Realtor for 26 years and can be found at Boulevard Realty or at sandragunn.com. She writes Archichat. What makes your home a home? H – How happy I feel every morning I wake up and look at the space full of light O – Original features that I kept from 1930 when renovating M – My wonderful neighbors E – Each flower, plant, tree, herb and butterfly that I nurture in the yard What makes your home unique? Plaster walls with cove ceilings, rose arbor over the front door, tiny 4-pane original window in the dormer, original paned windows in the workshop.
EVAN WETMORE, 002houston summer intern She is a rising senior at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, where she studies communication, psychology and journalism. Hobbies include singing, playing piano, scrapbooking and photography.
What do you miss most about home? I miss homemade food (and our mod kitchen), my fluffy white bed, TiVo and room to spread out! How do you make your college home more homey? I hang photos absolutely everywhere. With the help of a few bulletin boards and artsy frames, shots of my friends and my semester in Europe make a small dorm room quickly feel like home. I’m also having fun buying furniture and linens for my house next year!
JILL HUNTER, Photographer, shot Creative Spaces I‘ve always been inspired by the inventive design sense of my sister and the vintage style of both of my grandmothers, which is a fun mix of anthropologie meets mid-century modern and a few eclectic handmade pieces from my sister. In my kitchen, I love the combination of the retro table and chairs from one grandmother with an old tea set from the other that used to be displayed in her house. The nightstand in my bedroom is a stacked two-piece coffee table made by my sister with dark brown finish, pink racing stripes and metal legs from Home Depot. It’s pretty funky but I love the fresh design and knowing that I have something that was special to my sister in my own home.

EVENT HATS OFF TO MOTHERS LUNCHEON WHY TO HONOR 10 HOUSTON MOTHERS FOR THEIR DEDICATION AND TO BENEFIT UNITED CEREBRAL PALSY WHERE RIVER OAKS COUNTRY CLUB BALLROOM WHEN APRIL 7
The 11th annual Hats Off to Mothers Luncheon was the most successful to date, raising a net profit of more than $115,000 for United Cerebral Palsy’s mission to provide comprehensive services to those with disabilities and their families! UCP honored 10 Houston mothers for their contribution to their families and the Houston community, and the event was bright and colorful thanks to Houston-area moms and their stylish spring hats! Chairs Kristi Schiller and Millette Sherman did a wonderful job with the luncheon and even recruited guest speaker Sean Tuohy – the real-life dad whose story inspired the film The Blind Side!

DEVELOPMENT True to Farb family tradition, Jonathan Farb, grandson of the legendary Houston apartment developer, the late Harold Farb, is embarking on a new phase of his career with his first multi-family development. Named CITY PLACE, the development is located in the heart of Houston’s Midtown at the corner of McGowen and Bagby. Farb sites his grandfather as his mentor, saying, “He improved the landscape, the amenities and the rental dwellings for people in Houston, established a superior level of service and choices, and believed there is no substitute for quality. I’m going to do the same.” And since City Place happens to be the only new apartment development under construction inside the loop, he seems well on his way. Slated for pre-lease this November, we’ll keep you posted on updates.
Retail RIVER OAKS SHOPPING CENTER will soon welcome four new and unique tenants including Urban Retreat, Clark Cooper Brasserie, Haut Chocolate Delicious Clothes and V’s Barber Shop. TIFFANY & CO.’S Market Street store marks its second Houston-area location and will open up in the space previously occupied by Z Gallerie. PAPER SOURCE, the premier paperie and gift shop opening up in the ever-glamorous Highland Village, promises to spark creativity and inspire its customers do “Do Something Creative Every Day.” Opening its doors late this month, the shop will offer beautiful stationery, greeting cards and artisan papers in an effort to help everyone celebrate life moments just as they see fit. We all know (perhaps too well) how deadly the Houston heat can be, but these days, lots of athletes collapse during or after practice because of unknown heart conditions. Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute has paired with the Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine Institute to offer low-cost heart screenings for young adults ages 12 and up. An EKG test and echocardiogram will be conducted, and test results will be reviewed and discussed for only $150. 6411 Fannin 3rd Floor (in the Texas Medical Center), July 14, 5:307:30pm. NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION WISH UPON A WEDDING LAUNCHED IN HOUSTON LAST MONTH, OFFERING DREAM WEDDINGS AND CIVIL UNION CEREMONIES FOR COUPLES FACING THE MULTIFACETED CHALLENGES OF LIFE-THREATENING ILLNESSES. Art World-renowned artist DENNIS OPPENHEIM won last year’s competition to create a new, vibrant and captivating sign to welcome our city’s visitors! Oppenheim is currently featured at art museums all around Texas and has been at the forefront of contemporary art for the past fifty years. The new sign will feature multi-colored LED lights representing drops of water. Radiant Fountains will be unveiled this month, so keep your eye out next time you jet-set to the beach! Local artist Dandee Danao recently opened a ground-breaking new gallery off Main Street in the Museum District. The 2,400sf WAR’HOUS VISUAL STUDIOS showcases unique Houston artists who may struggle to gain entry into the city’s more traditional galleries. Featuring modern, fashion-forward, and in some cases, tattooed artwork, War’Hous is certainly generating a lot of buzz. Go check it out for yourself!
Gastronomy Actor-comedian Carlos Mencia is adding some flavor to Galveston’s Strand District this month. He is scheduled to open MAGGIE RITA’S MEXICAN GRILL & BAR in the historic Armour & Co. Building downtown, and boasts that his newest restaurant will offer a lively patio, friendly staff and incredible food and beverages…plus easy parking! What’s not to love?

Intimate in scale, the Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum is the repository of the only intact Byzantine frescoes of this size and importance in the Western Hemisphere. It’s also a manifestation of the redemptive power of art: The chapel was expressly built to house 13-century Byzantine frescoes that had been looted from their original home in a small chapel in Lysi, Cyprus. 5. housTon CenTer for ConTeMPorary CrafT www.crafthouston.org

CLASS IS ALMOST OUT AT CRISTO REY JESUIT COLLEGE PREPARATORY. THERE IS A PALPABLE SENSE OF RELIEF, BUT STUDENTS ARE STILL EAGER TO LEARN. SOME WILL BE BACK FOR SUMMER SCHOOL, OTHERS FOR AN SAT PREP COURSE, AND THE NEW FRESHMAN CLASS WILL ARRIVE IN EARLY AUGUST FOR WORK-STUDY TRAINING. WELCOME TO THE CRISTO REY NETWORK, WHERE 6,000 STUDENTS FROM LOW-INCOME FAMILIES ACROSS AMERICA ARE EXPERIENCING AN EDUCATIONAL REVOLUTION. Since the first school was founded in 1996 in the basement of a fr. martinez condemned Chicago church, the Cristo Rey Network has grown exponentially. With 24 high schools in diverse, urban areas around the country, the nonprofit organization boasts a superior Catholic curriculum at a minimal cost – and a 96% college acceptance rate. Houston’s Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory opened this past fall, one year ahead of schedule, welcoming 82 students into its inaugural Class of 2013. Situated on the expansive campus of the former Mount Carmel High School, Cristo Rey Jesuit is the youngest and largest school in the network. “Typical Texas,” jokes Father TJ Martinez, SJ, president of the school. With 77% of students dropping out of high school before junior year, this area of southeast Houston was determined by a Cristo Rey sustainability advisory board to be the most in-need of a network school out of all areas studied nationally. The students are accepted based purely on economic need (translation: qualify for free or reduced lunch), providing they are 14 years of age before September 1 and show a certain level of maturity. They are in class until 4pm, four days a week, with mandatory tutoring until 5:30, since many students are up to three grade levels behind. The fifth day is spent doing entry-level work at a reputable Houston corporation. Four students share one position – each student goes one day a week and takes one Friday per month – and their salary pays for their tuition. Nearly 70% of costs are covered by their hard work; they brought in half a million dollars this year. Not only does the work-study program bring money to the school, but the students love their jobs and are treated as equals. Companies like Sanchez Oil & Gas, Vinson & Elkins L.L.P. and the University of Houston are providing opportunities for the students to learn professionalism and the value of an education, in addition to bolstering the kids’ résumés. “Colleges are falling over themselves to get these kids,” said Fr. Martinez. This ground-breaking program is actually “an old idea, resurrected,” according to Fr. Martinez. In decades past, it was typical for teens to go to school and have a job. “We’re bringing that idea into the 21st century,” he explained.
22. july 10 | www.002mag.com
In a nutshell, Fr. Martinez is well-loved, energetic and totally hip. Everything from his sleek pointed-toe cowboy boots, eye-catching belt buckle and occasional fauxhawk plus his outgoing demeanor says “approachable.” He loves wandering the halls and joking with his students; a self-professed cheerleader, he loves to be right in the middle of everything – both the good and the bad. The zero-tolerance gang and cheating policies can put him in a difficult position, but at the end of the day, Fr. Martinez says he is the “luckiest Jesuit priest in the country.” As the face of the school, Fr. Martinez is doing an outstanding job telling their story and raising money. “Our goal was to raise $10 million by 2011,” said Susan Martin, Director of Communications. “We’ve already raised $7.5 million, since November!” Every chair, desk, floor tile and flat-screen television has been donated, and advertising company Brand Extract created the orange and yellow logo and crest pro bono. Despite the great success it has seen in fundraising efforts, plenty is still needed to accommodate the growing school. They are hoping to be at capacity (500-plus kids) within five years. Volunteer opportunities are endless, and the need for work-study jobs and building renovations is increasing. In three years, the first graduating class of Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory will walk across the stage, diploma and college acceptance letters in hand. Previously victims of the soft bigotry of low expectations, these students will have transformed and proved to everyone that with higher moral, behavioral, professional and academic expectations, they are truly the leaders of tomorrow. “Everyone has taken a leap of faith for these kids,” said Fr. Martinez. “Corporations, the city of Houston, students, families. Nobody thought these kids would be graduating from high school. Their graduation will be the most moving moment of my entire Jesuit life.” FOR MORE INFORMATION: SUSAN BRANDA MARTIN, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS 832.794.9662 | SMARTIN@CRISTOREYJESUIT.ORG WWW.CRISTOREYJESUIT.ORG

ART FILMS ARE GOOD FOR THE gish at the movies By Sarah Gish
SOUL…
TAKE A FRIEND
TO ONE!
REEL INDIE FILMS Hello, July! Reel Films (www.reelfilms.org) is presenting Living with the Trinity (7/10, 7pm) with director Rob Tranchin in attendance. The Trinity River is the star of this story that explores the conflict that developed in the early 1970s over plans to transform its entire length into a barge canal linking Dallas and Fort Worth to the Gulf of Mexico. The controversy placed Texas in the national spotlight and signaled a new era in environmental politics. The “Summer Israeli Film Series” continues this month with Eyes Wide Open (7/21, 7:30pm) at the JCC Houston (www.jcchouston.org). The film explores the constrictions of an ultraOrthodox Jewish community in Jerusalem in which a married butcher falls in love with another man. The Angelika Film Center (www.angelikafilmcenter.com) is opening Solitary Man (7/2); The Girl Who Played with Fire; Cyrus; and National Geographic’s Restrepo (7/9); Inception and The Killer Inside Me (7/16); Kisses and Nature of Existence (7/23) and Wild Grass (7/30). Southwest Alternate Media Project (www.swamp.org) is into its 3rd decade of bringing indie films into your living room; the 33rd season of “The Territory” is on air Tuesdays at 10pm through August 10 and its got a brand new website – check it out at www.theterritory.tv. MFAH and APS Congrats to Marian Luntz of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (www.mfah.org), who is celebrating 20 years as their film curator extraordinaire. Marian has shaped the Houston film community in the three decades since she moved here from New York. She has been involved with exhibition, distribution, production and advocacy for independent film, having worked for The American Film Institute, the Independent Feature Project, distributor Kino International and the Southwest Alternate Media
Project. The best way to keep up with what she’s doing these days is by following her blog, smARTFilm (http://blogs.chron.com/smartfilm/). So what’s the Museum screening this month? “Four French Films: The New Wave, Clouzot, and Romy” features Le combat dans l’île/Fire and Ice (7/16 and 7/17 at 7pm and 7/18 at 5pm); L’enfer d’HenriGeorges Clouzot/Henri-Georges Clouzot’s Inferno (7/23 at 7pm and 7/24 and 7/25 at 5pm); Two in the Wave (7/29 at 5pm; 7/30 at 8:45pm and 7/31 at 7pm); and Breathless (7/29 and 7/30 at 7pm; 7/31 at 3pm; and 8/1 at 5pm). The Aurora Picture Show (www.aurorapictureshow.org) has teamed up with Buffalo Bayou Partnership the Houston area Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, and the Rolling Roadshow to present an outdoor screening and “picnic extravaganza” of the documentary, Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Celebration (7/10, 8-10pm), on the Bayou across from Tony Marron Park (501 North York). This rarely seen film captures the antics and great music at Willie’s 2nd annual 4th of July bash. APS founder and another native New Yorker, Andrea Grover, is, sadly for us, heading back to Long Island soon with hubby Carlos Lama and kids Gigi and Lola. I hear the swoosh of culture leaving as it hops on the subway… FILMS & OTHER NEWS Congrats also go to Regina Scruggs, producer and host of KUHF’s “Music From The Movies,” also celebrating her 20th year – her time has been spent with KUHF (www.kuhf.org). She’s been in radio for over 30 years and is a charter member of the Houston Film Critics Society and a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association. “Music From the Movies” is a fabulous show that airs Fridays at 7pm; see her film reviews at http://app1.kuhf.org/houston_public_radiomusic_from_the_movies.php. All’s quiet on the W. Gray front with the River Oaks Theatre (thanks be to god!) and I actually have good news to report from the preservation-of-movie-theatres file: Thanks to developer John Beeson of Beeson Properties (www.beesonproperties.com), the lovely Tower Theatre façade on Westheimer is getting a re-do after Ike did a number on it. Beeson hopes to entice a new renter since Hollywood Video vacated the spot last November. Speaking of the RO, The Kids are Alright looks great – Julianne Moore and Annette Bening star as a lesbian couple who are surprised when bio dad (cutie Mark Ruffalo) pops in out of the blue. The film will most likely have a run at the River Oaks (www.landmarktheatres.com).

The Catastrophic Theatre presents Hunter Gatherers July 1-17 @ 8pm (Wednesdays-Saturdays) The Catastrophic Theatre announces the return of Hunter Gatherers. The hit comedy that sold out Stages last season finds Pam and Richard hosting their best friends for an annual gettogether, kicked off by an animal sacrifice and followed by sex, violence, deception, wrestling and a little dancing. The line between civilized and primal man will be blurred, and not everyone will survive long enough to enjoy dessert. Last year’s production had audiences crying with laughter, so scare up a crew to take advantage of this second chance to see the show. DiverseWorks ArtSpace – admission paywhat-you-can. The Big Show @ Lawndale Opening reception July 9 @ 6:309:30pm They say everything’s bigger in Texas, which is why Lawndale’s annual open-call, juried exhibition is aptly named The Big Show. The Big Show features the work of emerging and underrepresented artists living within 100 miles of
Houston and has showcased a tasty smorgasbord of local talent since its conception in 1984. Even better, it has catapulted featured artists to other big deals – like the Whitney Biennial, Artpace residencies and the Texas Prize. Last year, Lawndale received 994 submissions by 400 local artists … so come see for yourself what the big fuss is all about. Lawndale Art Center (4912 Main Street ) – Free. Visit www.lawndaleartcenter.org for more details. Filmic Stew with Cinema Bomar @ Spacetaker July 10 @ 6:30pm A little of this, a little of that … add some spice and voila! Spacetaker is teaming up with Cinema Bomar, an organization dedicated to screening 16mm industrial, educational and ephemeral films in all their dated and deteriorated glory, for a film tasting of sorts. In the hour-long mix are short films covering everything from instructive tips for winning beauty contests to art-deco dream sequences. Add cocktails to the ingredients and mix vigorously. But mind your manners, as one film tells the cautionary tale of food getting so fed up with bad lunchroom behavior that it launches a gastronomic assault! Spacetaker ARC at Winter Street Studios (2101 Winter St. ) – Free. Visit www.spacetaker.org or www.cinemabomar.org for more details.
CAMH’s Steel Lounge Underground July 30 @ 8-11pm If you’re looking for a perfect marriage of visual art and music, make a date with Steel Lounge Underground, an ongoing monthly event showcasing Houston-based musical artists performing live in the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS BUSINESS? The owner came to the States and started as a cab driver – with the background of diamond cutting. It captures the American dream story! He started his business with a small office and years of experience working with diamonds, which brought him here to the Village. WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO KEEP OFFERING NEW AND INNOVATIVE DESIGNS AFTER YEARS? The brides-to-be are the real trendsetters, and we help them achieve their design goals. Paying attention to what our customers want is what keeps us innovative and helps us create new rings with different designs to please the most discerning bride-to-be. I get inspired by every lady that comes in full of excitement to share her wish list with us. I listen to her carefully while she explains what will make her happy which is in itself great inspiration and challenge! I have been designing for years but with my jeweler by my side I have made some great things happen. It’s great to have the design support to create. I am also working on bringing colorful jewelry designs to accommodate any anniversary, birthday or “just because” gifts. WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER JEWELRY STORES? I will tell you what the customers who visit us say: “You are very helpful, insightful, educational and very laid-back!” My personal motto, and what I try to instill in this store, is to make everyone comfortable without the car salesman pressure that is out there. I guide them, then educate them about diamonds as well as ring styles. If my bride-to-be is very hands on and active, I will steer her to a stronger ring that will last her a lifetime as opposed to a very delicate and super-thin engagement ring. Once my customers see that I give them honest advice, then a great relationship begins. I’ve been known to tell my couples, “OK, I will speak to you like a mom and say you ‘don’t want that, dear.’” We have a good laugh and most of the time they appreciate my candid honesty. And lastly, our price in diamonds speaks for itself! We work with absolutely every budget. The combination of our certified diamonds plus our in-house diamond buyer and his know-how is the leading key to our success. DESIGN TRENDS: Diamonds circling “THE DIAMOND” is a definite trend (we call it a halo), along with a thin band with shared prongs (a favorite on the same ring), and is our number one seller. Vintage is still going strong! We have added a twist by merging old meets new. We create a fantastic combination to please anyone with a romantic character of old as well as architectural and clean line modern feel of new. Round cuts are number one, while cushion cut diamonds are sought after but ovals have been coming back strong, believe it or not!

SUBJECT: ELLA "BEAN" MENTOR: FINA REISINgER GREEN DESIGNER AT NEW LIVING
Jackson: Are you ready? Ella: I’m…waiting. Jackson: Huh? Ella: I’m waiting… Dad: That’s a yes, Jackson. Jackson: Okay. So, how long have you cared about the environment? Ella: Environment? A long time. Jackson: Umm…what frustrates you most that people do to harm the environment? Ella: Throwing trash on the ground. No, I don’t like that. (Ella’s mom shares that she gets so mad when she sees litter on the road and even madder at her for not pulling over that second so she can pick it up and put it where it belongs!) Jackson: What are things that everyone can do to help the environment? Ella: By recycling…stuff like that. (Ella’s mom says that all of the light bulbs in her home are the squiggly kind, as Ella calls them.) Jackson: If you could do one thing to help the planet what would it be? Ella: Recycling! Jackson: What are your favorite things to do? Ella: Well, my favorite things are recycling and doing stuff for the earth. Jackson: Cool. Um, what’s your favorite color? Ella: Green! Jackson: And what’s your favorite food? Ella: My favorite food….well, I really like McDonald’s. Jackson: What do you like to get at McDonald’s? Ella: Hamburger in a kid’s meal. Jackson: Where’s your favorite place to play? Ella: My playroom. Jackson: Do you have a favorite cartoon character? Ella: Mmm, not really.
ELLA is passionate about many things, but her mission in life is to save the earth! She is all about recycling and water conservation. She is constantly getting after her parents about turning the water off when it’s not needed. Ella’s mom is from Seattle, so she’s been green for a while, but talk about an eye opener for the rest of bean’s family. Ella recently won the Aaron Brothers “Color Earth Green” contest at the Sugar Land location & went on to nationals where she didn’t win, but her mom shares that she was sad for about 2 minutes, and then said “It’s OK, I’ll just try again next year!” What she is focused on at the moment is living water. She wants to send her whole piggy bank off to Africa so they can buy clean water. She has her father so into it, he’s already attended a living water meeting to build a well in a third world country, with the family’s church. They are actively raising $850 to get Ella’s dad to Guatamala with Living Water International, and have until July 2. Keep up with them at sugarbeane.blogspot.com.

YOUR UPCOMING 4TH OF JULY BBQ PARTY IS JUST A FEW DAYS AWAY. YOU MAKE THE CHECKLIST OF THINGS YOU NEED: CHICKEN, HOTDOGS, HAMBURGERS KOOL-AID FOR THE KIDS, SHINER FOR THE ADULTS POTATO SALAD, CHIPS, PICKLES……THOSE LITTLE FLAGS FOR THE KIDS TO WAVE, ALONG WITH A FEW WATER BALLOONS. IT’S GOING TO BE ANOTHER BACKYARD BASH, BUT WHAT MAKES YOUR PARTY STAND OUT FROM THE REST? THIS YEAR INCORPORATE A LITTLE VINTAGE DINNERWARE AND BARWARE TO MAKE YOUR EVENT MEMORABLE. Everyone loves the three-sectioned plates to keep the barbeque beans from touching the potato salad and then getting all over the meat! Instead of drab paper plates that have the ability of folding and spilling all over your guests, try serving your feast on Fiesta Ware grill plates! Fiesta Ware, the most popular American dinnerware ever, was introduced in America in 1936 by the Homer Laughlin Pottery Company of Newell, West Virginia. There were numerous changes over the years for shapes, sizes and designs and eventually it was discontinued in 1972. Fiesta Ware offers a multi-colored line of grill plates that are affordable and can be found in local antique stores, online sites and even flea markets. Do you need a platter to hold all the hamburger buns? They make those too – along with salad plates, bowls, dessert bowls, tumblers, water pitchers, etc. What’s a summer BBQ without sweet tea? It just doesn’t happen in Texas. What better way to serve your tea than with an antique pitcher and tumblers? The options are endless, starting with a great pattern glass set from the Victorian era to something hip from the 1960s!

The tea can also be kept cold in a stoneware cooler. They hold around 2 gallons of liquid and will keep it ice cold on a hot Houston day. Stoneware has been around since the early 1800s. They were originally made to hold water. Stoneware coolers can vary in price, depending on design, artist and decoration – from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands. Certainly an expensive way to keep the tea cold but, oh, what a conversation piece! If stoneware is not in your budget, there are certainly other less expensive items that will impress your guests. Picture this: the fireworks have started and your guests are ooohing and aaahing at the sparkles in midair. Why not dazzle them with a dirty martini served in a vintage crystal martini glass? A variety of makers produced martini glasses (and shakers) starting in the 1950s (the martini heyday). Vintage glasses can be purchased from as little as $6-8 each to $150 each, depending on the maker.

Bergner and Johnson Design: The Sweet Smell of Success Garden variety flowers are just what the florist ordered for this sweet-smelling decorating firm. Eschewing the familiar roses-and-baby’s-breath bouquets, Johnson has elevated the art of floral arranging to a level that impresses even the most jaded eye. The secret is in “our use of interesting garden flowers – similar to garden tomatoes versus commercial ones,” she says. Regular deliveries to posh Houston clientele are evidence of Johnson’s mastery of the art. Her customers include businesses like Gensler Architecture Firm, which requests fresh flowers for their offices weekly. She also caters to individuals, some of whom count continuous floral arrangements in their home as a necessity and look to Johnson to satisfy their caprices. “They rarely come and look at what is in the shop; luckily they trust us,” confides Johnson, whose warehouse is in the Heights. Beautifying weddings, balls and galas since 1995, Bergner and Johnson Design employs up to 40 people for some events. Beyond flowers, the firm provides props,
lighting, linens and draping to complete the effect. “I do all the Menil, Contemporary Arts Museum and Society for the Performing Arts events, which means a lot to me because I studied art,” Johnson explains. The legendary Children’s Museum Gala is another high profile event that she’ll work on in the fall. Playing with stems goes way back for this St. Louis, Missouri native. “I started arranging flowers when I was a child. I would cut tulips, jonquils or peonies out of our yard and put them around the house,” she says. The game turned more serious after apprenticing with Sarah Bergner, her former partner, and a stint in New York. “I learned to not only be good but be fast,” she explains. Spring and summer are the perfect time to bring a little of the outdoors in. Johnson’s current favorite flowers include lilac, sweet peas and peonies. She also keeps an open mind when it comes to choosing. “I like all flowers, I just don’t like ugly arrangements,” she says.
FLOWER ARRANGING TIPS
Keep it simple. Don’t group too many colors or varieties. Choose flowers that are not fully opened so the arrangement will continue to evolve. july 10 | www.002mag.com .35

Mpire Design and Development: Freestyle Adrian Sanchez, aka Mpire, has finally come full circle. “Mpire was my nickname when I was a silly teenager and I was an aspiring rapper/professional skateboarder,” he says. His namesake company has, as he puts it, “no boundaries or limits in visual design.” Along with five other creative souls, Sanchez has been building Mpire Design and Development since 2008. Forming the business came after a series of career detours. “I was a jeweler, an A/C technician, (and) an I.T. guy,” he reveals. He finally settled on design and acquired his DBA in 2004. He then worked as a part-time freelancer while maintaining a full-time job, until destiny called. It was meant to be, insists Sanchez, as he fondly recalls a favorite childhood memory. “When I was 8 years old I won $80 in a design contest at Northline Mall. The theme was smokers’ health so I drew a sarcastic talking cigarette and even though my family spent my winnings at a Payless shoe store, I knew then that design was definitely in my future and I was instantly hooked.” A kind of maverick, Sanchez is paving his own road, not afraid to try new
things, cultivating a genre that has a hint of Generation Y to it. “As software technology advances we will see limits being pushed farther,” he says. Mpire does not limit itself in scope either. They just worked with Manhattan Life Insurance Company to work on rebranding their image. “This project will take me to New York City, a place I have always wanted to visit,” he says. The company also designs and hosts websites for everyone from real estate companies to custom cabinet makers. They’ve made packaging and brochures, designed logos and trade show displays. They’ve produced architectural and environmental design. They’ll even make furniture or create iPhone applications. In fact, their website lists 68 items under “What we do,” begging the question, “What don’t they do?” Forget about the community is what they won’t do. In an effort to give back, Mpire Design offers free design services to nonprofit organizations lacking funding for their projects.

Sylvia Dorsey Interiors: Laid-Back Luxe Casually elegant yet not afraid of a little bit of opulence, Sylvia Longoria Dorsey is known for a worldly aesthetic that transcends trends. It’s all about hand-carved furniture and gilt finishes that will last forever combined with luxe, custom fabrics. A mild sense of decadence infuses this designer’s calm, subdued color palettes. Her penchant for a little glitz is part of the legacy left by her mentor and friend James Northcutt, the renowned L.A.-based luxury hotel designer, whom she met while living in the West Coast. “I loved his sense of color and his creativity,” she says. A bottom-to-top approach is what sets Sylvia Dorsey apart, allowing clients to work with a global vision from the construction phase to the last scrupulously selected hand towel. The designer honed her skills working for husband Tommy Dorsey’s building company, where she worked with architects and selected finishings and fixtures. It wasn’t long before Houston’s well-heeled homeowners, looking for livable luxury, began calling on Dorsey to style their pads. “I would rather have less that is good than a house full of stuff,” says Dorsey. This modern sense of restraint is a key element in achieving the serene quality that defines her interiors. Dorsey’s eye for beautiful surroundings began early on. Growing up in Mexico, Dorsey watched as her parents built a new home and her mother, an avid art collector, handed down a legacy of good taste. Her career took off when longtime friend Farrah Fawcett, with whom she went to college, asked Dorsey to decorate her Los Angeles home. “She was one of my first clients. That was a really special job,” explains Dorsey, who remained close to the actress until she passed away in 2009. To ensure a constant supply of high-quality bed and table linens and accessories, Dorsey opened Longoria Collection in 1993. “I felt that Houston did not have a store that offered a lot of things that I needed when I was finishing a job,” she says. The Uptown Park boutique has become an indispensable source for other designers and in-the-know Houstonians, offering hard to find brands like Ankasa as well as jewelry by Austin-based Rebeca IsaBella. TOP 3 DECORATING TIPS ❶ Have a plan. Do not buy on impulse. ❷ If you want to do something trendy, try pillows. Furniture is a long-term investment. ❸ Listen to your Interior Designer.

When it comes to putting Houston on the design map, leave it to Mark Geer of Geer Design. Past projects include a sleek-look book for Plattsburg College, a New York State University in the North Country. He laboriously assembled archival images of man’s attempts to record the moon and heavens to showcase Luna, a fine commercial printing paper company from Canada. He even crafted the identities and glossy collateral material of real estate projects in Moscow, Russia and Warsaw, Poland. “I’m a firm believer that if you consistently do your job well, others who recognize it will seek you out,” says Geer. Geer’s company specializes in corporate identity development, publication design, annual reports and communication programs for national and international corporations, universities and nonprofit institutions. “We help our clients uncover truths about their business and express them in a way that is simple, thoughtful and unexpected. Our work is recognized for conceptual integrity and sophisticated design, coupled with an attention to impeccable craft,” he explains. If behind every great man is a great woman, in this case it is Julie, Geer’s wife, who manages the business. The two of them have kept a tight grip on the wheel since founding the company. “I’ve deliberately kept our company small so that I can be personally involved in all aspects of our projects. This structure ensures that our clients receive senior level talent and expertise at every phase of a project. Our size also provides the freedom to be more selective about the projects we take on.” So what’s the secret behind international success when it comes to design and marketing? Geer adheres strictly to his ideal, a combination of conceptual integrity and sophisticated design, coupled with an attention to impeccable craft. He singles out a couple of design giants as examples he admires. “I think both Apple and Target do a great job of consistently communicating their brand experience in clear, fresh and engaging ways.”

Colossus Communications: Damn good marketing A self-proclaimed “expert at parodies,” Tim Moloney is what some might call a venture marketer. Moloney, who never says no to a good project, is also a fearless marketing whiz. “One day I can be writing an annual report for an oil and gas company, and the next day I’m coming up with names for a new restaurant concept,” he says. His company, Colossus Communications, is a full-service strategic marketing communications agency. Clients run the gamut from real estate, energy, healthcare, the public sector, retail and nonprofit organizations. “I’ll work with anyone who offers good work and is a good client.” His “can-do” attitude seems to be working. Colossus Communications, established in January 2009, is quickly picking up steam. “We’re in the middle of a complete re-branding of a very large Houston accounting firm, writing the website for an executive recruiter, polishing the script for a Mexican vacation club company video, which I will also get to direct – my favorite thing, and today I started consulting with a criminal defense attorney on her marketing communications. It helps to
have a big white board to keep track of everything,” Moloney elucidates. Moloney’s professional elasticity may be attributable to his genuine appreciation for brilliant marketing. Moloney knows catchy branding when he sees it. “You can’t beat Simon Doonan, the Creative Director of Barneys New York. That guy is a genius. From the store windows to the website to the catalogs to the in-store merchandising, he and his team are consistently surprising and so clever.” Without a hint of self-importance, Moloney has no qualms about giving kudos where they’re due. “I’m also a huge fan of whoever was writing those Continental billboards. Every time I was on my way to the airport, I would get so damn envious of the talented writer behind all those great lines.” A talented writer himself, Moloney uses his spare time to hone his skills. You may have seen his name in 002houston before; he is a regular contributor whose stories are easy to spot. “I love saying “damn” a lot,” he confesses. It’s usually in a good way.

THE NEW WHAT GAVE YOU THE IDEA TO STRIP AN EXISTING RESIDENTIAL HOME DOWN AND MAKE IT A GREEN BUILDING? WOULD THAT BE THE BEST WAY TO SUM UP WHAT YOU’RE DOING? Our initial thought wasn’t “we want a green house.” Our thought was, “this is an established neighborhood [Memorial Glen] where we want to live and raise our family.” We had driven around the neighborhood literally 40-50 times in the past couple of years, just to see if there was ever anything we could afford. With the recession and fortuitous timing, we happened upon a home at the end of a cul-de-sac that had been on the market for 7-8 months. It was in horrible shape, it had been flooded and there was bare concrete on much of the first floor. Anyway, we looked at it kind of on a lark, and saw that it had good bones. I work in the architecture/engineering industry, so I had an architect friend come look at the house, and he could see the potential too. So we made an offer and were able to get the house 15% under the original list price (for slightly over lot value.)
GREEN HOUSE
ARCHITECT: Camillo Parra, Parra Design Group | BUILDER: Catama Builders
Interview by Lance Scott Walker
CARRIE STALLWITZ AND HER HUSBAND DAVE ARE RENOVATING A HOME THEY JUST BOUGHT IN MEMORIAL BEND. BECAUSE OF THE WAY IN WHICH THEY ARE DOING IT, WE BECAME INTERESTED IN FOLLOWING THE PROCESS. READ ON.
Sure, green is the sexy thing to do now, but for us, the bigger issue is that it makes more financial sense, given this opportunity to practically build a new house, to design the home to be as energy efficient as possible. In our previous home, we had one electricity bill for more than $1,000! With simple changes like better insulation and windows, we will be able to cut that by 75% or more. By capturing rainwater in a cistern, we’ll be able take care of all our lawn/garden water needs without ever turning on the hose. To sum up what we are doing, we are creating our dream home, and we’re trying to be environmentally responsible about it. AND SO THEY ACTUALLY TAKE EVERYTHING APART BY HAND AS OPPOSED TO BRINGING IN HEAVY EQUIPMENT FOR DEMOLITION? As for the “deconstruction,” which is the term Habitat for Humanity uses for their process, their crews literally take the house apart by hand – to the degree that every single shingle is removed individually. Because of our schedule (we need to move into the house by September) we ended up doing a limited deconstruction. Habitat spent about three days in the house and got the things that would get them the highest return by either reselling in their ReStore or selling for scrap. They pulled out most of the wiring in the house, storm windows, doors – they remove the entire frame and take the door with it! – switch plates, the A/C unit, plumbing fixtures and cabinets. I will get a complete itemized list soon. With that list, we can then appraise the value of the reclaimed materials and deduct it on our taxes. For full deconstruction, it is not uncommon for the appraised value of the materials to be more than $50K. Since we only did a limited amount, our appraisal will obviously be less. We will still require heavy equipment to demolish our garage. If we had more time, Habitat would take it apart. Deconstruction of a complete house takes about four weeks.
HOW DID YOU PRESENT THE PROJECT TO YOUR ARCHITECT CAMILO? DID HE HAVE TO SORT OF JUST IMAGINE THE SPACE WITHOUT ITS CURRENT WALLS? Camilo went to the house with me one day, and the only thing I told him is that we thought we might want to relocate the interior stairs. Now, the stairs are in a different location, and all but four of the interior walls are coming down. We all had to do a lot of “visioning” about how we wanted to spaces to relate to each other and how much openness we wanted. The funny thing is that my husband originally thought he would be at the house, knocking down walls with his own two hands, and then nailing 2x4s! Once we found out from Camilo that we could accomplish the scope of what we wanted by using a professional builder, that turned the tide for us. WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST EYE-OPENERS, THE BIGGEST THINGS YOU’VE LEARNED? So far, the biggest eye-opener has been schedule. Despite the fact that we as the owners told Camilo and Andres (the builder, of Catama Builders) that we want to be in the house by September 15th – originally it was the end of August!– it is a finely choreographed dance that must take part on their end to get all the moving pieces to work in harmony. On our end, the really hard work is just beginning. We will need to make a decision about every visible surface in the house, from the texture of the ceilings, to the color of grout between the tiles in the kitchen. This is where we will need to learn to dance! AT THIS POINT IN THE PROJECT, DO YOU FEEL LIKE IT’S A VIABLE OPTION FOR A LOT OF OTHER FOLKS? I still do think renovation is a viable option for most people. The extent of the project is what determines the viability. The extent of our renovation is probably beyond many people right now. But there are several DIY changes that people can do to make their homes more energy efficient.

GREG: WHAT DO YOU GUYS AT PARK LANE HEALTHY HOMES DO AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? STEVEN: The first thing we do is comprehensively analyze and identify any ways in which your home is not effectively “performing.” Our goal is health and energy efficiency balanced together. It’s important because 90% of the time the air inside your home is 2-5 times worse than it is outside. GREG: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THIS BUSINESS? BRENT: We’ve been in the custom home building business for years and have been building our homes to these specifications. We’ve been learning and acquiring all of this knowledge about efficiency and health and how everything should and could work together and it made sense to apply it to homes that were already built. We knew we could offer valuable services to homeowners who could benefit financially and health-wise from improving the condition of their homes. GREG: WHY DO PEOPLE USE PARK LANE? STEVEN: The best example is that they feel better. People tell us and we can prove that their homes are actually healthier and because of that, they tell their friends about us. When your home is healthier, you’re healthier. Breathing, sleeping, allergies are all improved…there are a lot of technical details about what we do, but the simple English version of it is that we make your home “tighter.” That holds the good

air in, keeps the bad air out and makes the home as efficient as possible. GREG: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS? BRENT: That our process is too expensive and time-consuming. In fact, any homeowner can take advantage of our services. Our basic home audit starts at $225 and is just a one-day, non-invasive, comprehensive analysis of your home. STEVEN: Not everyone will be able to do everything we recommend but just taking initial steps to improve the quality in your home can make a big difference. By making an investment in your home and your health you will end up saving in the long run as well. GREG: WHAT’S THE LATEST PRODUCT YOU’RE WORKING WITH RIGHT NOW? STEVEN: It’s the IQ Air system. IQ Air is the only system with a 16 MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating. It filters things such as dust, dust mites, mold spores, bacteria and viruses. It guarantees an over 90% reduction of airborne allergens and pollutants which means your air is instantly 10 times cleaner. It doesn’t require any motor or electricity and has a 3-year filter life so you don’t have to change – or forget to change – filters monthly…See, I told you we were into this stuff…

MARK JOHNSON AND JENNY STAFF JOHNSON | WWW.HOMETTA.COM once in a while you stumble across a very creative idea that fills a niche in this town where there just truly aren’t many housing choices: a bungalow in the Heights, Montrose or Southampton; a few Mid-century Modern in Glenbrook valley – and then there are tuscan tudor Georgian french Ranch. I met with Mark and Jenny Johnson in their Mid-Century, now very modern, home in Avalon Place to discuss their plan to bring small, semi-custom modern homes to the masses.
eDucAtion BAcKGRounD: Both: Bachelor’s in liberal arts; Mark: Master’s in teaching, Jenny: Master’s in public affairs HonoRS/AwARDS: treehugger Best Architecture idea Award, Best of Green Awards 2010; Greater Houston preservation Alliance Good Brick Award; Houston Heights Association community improvement Award; Houston Business Journal Special Recognition Mark was chosen as a speaker at teDx Houston 2010. cuRRent pRoJectS: H-town, a virtual 3-D neighborhood where visitors can tour our houses via their avatars. SPECIALTY: Selling plans for small, beautiful modern homes by 30 of America’s best young, award-winning modmark johnson | jenny staff | sandra gunn ern architects. We focus on delivering small home plans that maximize beauty, quality and sustainability without being oversized. They fill the gap in between large, fully custom architectural homes and the mass-produced builder housing that is so often ill-designed. WHAT DROVE YOU TO ARCHITECTURE? WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT IT? We started as builders in central Houston and were frustrated by the lack of choices for urban housing beyond the bungalow and the 3-story townhome. We wanted to try something new and started recruiting our friends who were doing excellent work in their architecture practices to help us address the problem. We’re most excited about the opportunity to improve the built environment and give homebuyers more options for excellence in their housing choices. HOW DID YOU COME TO LIVE/WORK IN HOUSTON AND WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN TO MAKE THIS YOUR HOME? We love the opportunity that Houston affords, and the openness of the people to try new things. TELL US ABOUT YOUR HOME AND ITS GREEN ELEMENTS. Our home is a 1956 residence that was designed by the firm Wilson, Morris & Crain, the same firm that designed the Astrodome. After living in it in its original condition for almost five years, we moved out and undertook a major renovation and addition designed by Interloop Architecture. We love the way it interprets classic mid-century elements with a modern slant (literally – the new part of the house is built on a nine degree angle). Though we settled on a rather large square footage to accommodate our growing family and our business, we tried to mitigate the size by choosing cladding, insulation and other systems that would minimize our energy use. We’re hoping to
get a Smart Meter soon so we can monitor and improve our habits even more! Most importantly, our home was designed and built to last, and we hope one of our children will want to inherit it one day. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE ARCHITECT AND WHY? Well, we work with so many wonderful architects that it would be impolitic to choose just one; however, we just returned from a trip to New York where we admired the New Museum building in the Bowery neighborhood, designed by Japanese firm (and recent Pritzker Prize winners) SANAA. ITCHING TO WORK ON? We’re investigating several innovative collaborations with architecture studios that will help more people access small, beautiful modern homes. Partnerships across disciplines will be key in improving housing delivery systems in this country, and we want to work with designers, builders and others who are trying to solve our housing problems in a meaningful way. BEST PLACES IN HOUSTON TO HANG OUT? Discovery Green, Brasil, Armando’s. HOW CAN CHILDREN BE ENCOURAGED TO APPRECIATE ARCHITECTURE? Exposure will usually do the trick. We take our kids to a lot of art museums, which usually has the side effect of showing them interesting buildings, both old and new.

FYRKAT Picnic grill Few things are as American as fireworks on the Fourth of July, but one that comes quite close is BBQing. And even though the Danes don’t celebrate our national holiday, the Danish-based company Bodum makes our lives a little easier this year with the FYRKAT Picnic charcoal grill which easily fits on terraces, porches and even the back of your car, so you can take your BBQ wherever the mood strikes you. Its size is just perfect enough for your favorite piece of meat or veggies for our more health-conscious friends. Made in a variety of colors, these grills make the perfect accessory for your picnic before the fireworks. Available at Amazon.

KIN ONE
Is that a Wi-Fi signal in your pocket or are you just happy to see me? If you don’t feel like searching for WiFi hotspots, then here is a device that creates one for you. The CLEAR Spot is a pocket-sized gadget that shares your WiMAX broadband connection with up to 8 nearby Wi-Fi devices or users. Plug a CLEAR activated USB modem into the device and everything from smartphones, laptops, Wi-Fi enabled home computers and more can utilize the super speedy connection. The CLEAR Spot comes with an AC power adapter and a rechargeable battery. This is a great accessory for small offices and also easy Internet access during power outages. Beware hurricane season! www.clear.com | $49.99
I get to play with many new wireless phones and many of them look and do similar things. Microsoft got into the phone game with its release of the KIN ONE and KIN TWO that are as unique as their design. The KIN ONE is most interesting to me due to its small form factor. It feels like a flat, smooth pebble and features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and touchscreen. Microsoft designed the KIN devices for people who are “actively navigating their social lives,” and blends the phone, online services and the PC. Indeed all my Facebook and Twitter feeds were displayed on the home screen. The drag-and-drop feature allowed for a snappy way to upload photos to my accounts and send links and photos to friends. Naturally the Zune features work well on the phones and Microsoft’s Bing location-based search found most everything nearby. www.verizonwireless.com | KIN ONE $49.99 | KIN TWO $99.99 After a $100 rebate and a two-year Verizon Wireless contract

If Dad got a new PC for Father’s Day or if you are planning to get a new PC for your college student, the biggest hurdle is transferring all the data from the old computer to the new one. PCmover is a software program that you install on both computers. You choose which programs, files and settings need to be moved, and when the transfer is complete your new computer will have the personality and functionality of your old PC. The PCs connect using a network, Laplink USB or Ethernet cable, or any type of removable media that can be read by both PCs, such as an external hard drive. The software can also be used to upgrade your existing PC from Windows XP to Windows 7. www.laplink.com | $39.95

wise guy
GYPPED
By Tim Moloney
H
ELLO, WISE GUYS AND GALS, AND WELCOME TO ANOTHER MONTH OF MY MUSINGS, MEANDERINGS AND MERCHANDISE. THIS TIME, I’M AFRAID THE COLUMN IS GOING TO BE MORE OF A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT RATHER THAN THE USUAL PRODUCT PLACEMENT PARTY.
You probably think of me as wordly, sophisticated and jaded, and while you’re mostly right, I’m also one of the most naïve and trusting people you will ever meet (this may be why publicists love me). You could tell me anything and I would believe you, because I can’t believe that someone would actually lie to my face. Seriously, you could tell me you just got back from the moon by private spaceship and my response would be something along the lines of, “Wow, that’s cool. How’s the legroom on those rockets? Did you have an aisle or window seat?” That’s why I have to tell you about an incident that happened to me this week that forever changed my outlook on life. I was working late at my office, the only one there, and at around 6pm I heard the front door open. A large man came around the corner and asked me, “Is that your car out there?” Immediately, I thought, “Oh shit, do NOT tell me you ran into my car!?” I replied that it was mine and he said, “I can take care of those scratches in the paint for you. I work in the BMW body shop and today’s my day off and I’m doing some body work for other people in the neighborhood and thought I could give you a good deal.” I had already gotten an estimate for the paint job from a few different places, so I asked him how much he would charge. “I’ll do it for $460 and have it done in 40 minutes,” he said. I couldn’t believe my luck. This was a few hundred dollars – and days shorter – than any estimate I had gotten and he was going to do it right there…in 40 minutes. “Sounds great!” I said and he went back outside to get to work. A few minutes later, I went outside to check out the progress. He had a crew of three; one of the guys was his father and the other was his brother. The father had just popped out a small dent with a suction cup. They were going to throw that in for free. What a deal! There was all this red, grainy paint smeared on the two left doors. I was told it was a “European polymer” that would seal the new paint and take 24 hours to dry and then I could just wash it off, revealing a brand new car.
When they were finished, they followed me to the ATM and I paid up. I had to go into two accounts because of the $400 daily withdrawal maximum, but I wanted to give them a good tip. I mean, what service! As I handed the money over to the father, he told me he was going to come by my office the following day to check on everything and leave me a stack of business cards so I could hand them out to my friends if I was satisfied with the work. “I’ll take care of you if you send business my way,” was his parting shot. As I got back into my car, I started thinking about the man’s odd accent. It was kind of guttural, vaguely Eastern European or maybe somewhat Russian, and then I realized it: they were a band of gypsies. And that’s not a good thing. Gypsies will fuck you up. My head whipped around so I could get their license plate number but I saw it was a paper tag as they sped away. I chased them down Washington but lost them downtown. Still, I wanted to think the best. I waited 24 hours and then tried to wash off this exclusive European polymer. No dice. It’s this sick-looking red Bondo or something that sticks to the paint like cement. Never have I felt more foolish. I went to Bubbles and they just sadly shook their heads. They tried and tried; still it stuck. I called a friend, looking for support, and learned the same thing had happened to him a few months ago, but he was too embarrassed to tell anyone. Unlike me, this guy is smart – a lawyer and a president of a respected company. But he’s a stupid trusting ass like yours truly, too. So what’s my point? First of all, lock your office door after hours. Second, don’t trust a deal that seems too good to be true. And third, wise up and realize that not everyone is telling the truth. It was a hard and expensive lesson to learn, but I guess they did me a favor in some way. This week, I became a jaded, worldly, sophisticate with red shit smeared all over his car. And a skeptic. See you next month. Hopefully, I will have located gypsy headquarters by then and exacted my revenge. Because it’s coming. Gypsies, it’s war. You pissed off the wrong Wise Guy.

DIY (that’s decorate it yourself…))
Photography Gabriella Nissen Sofa, rug, lamps, kitchen knobs, ottoman and cubes, black shelves all from IKEA.
DECORATING CAN BE A DAUNTING TASK, BUT REMEMBER IT’S YOUR HOME THAT YOU HAVE TO COME BACK TO DAY IN AND OUT, SO IT MAKES SENSE TO SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THE THINGS YOU LIKE. HERE’S HOW TO MAKE YOUR NEST ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO BE WITHOUT DIPPING INTO YOUR SAVINGS. THERE ARE TONS OF LOCAL RESOURCES TO HELP YOU KEEP YOUR BUDGET, LIKE IKEA. YOU CAN EVEN RECYCLE YOUR GARBAGE! (GO WITH US ON THIS ONE!)
QUICK TIP Use a lint brush to quickly and easily clean up dirt – or morsels from your TV dinner. OK, so you got a sofa, but DON’T leave it blah!
DO add pillows for aesthetics and comfort.
BEFORE
REMEMBER, THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE EASY! DON’T SETTLE FOR BORING KNOBS. DO TRY CHANGING THE KNOBS IN THE KITCHEN FOR A QUICK EASY FIX. AND IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THEM ALL (THAT’S MORE EXPENSIVE); WE JUST CHANGED THE UPPER CABINETS TOTALING 6, RATHER THAN ALL 14 KNOBS.
AFTER
DON’T LEAVE YOUR CABLES AND WIRES OUT FOR THE WORLD TO SEE!
QUICK TIP DON’T live with scraped and dinged furniture. Do get some shoe polish that matches and fill in the scratches until it blends in. And don’t worry! It won’t rub off and stain your stuff, just give it a day to set in.
58. july 10 | www.002mag.com
DO go wireless if you can, but strategically place furniture near outlets where you know a lamp, computer or anything else will be. Also if you can, get the cables cut shorter or just get some cable grips to wind them up tight.
002houston July 10:002houston 6/17/10 4:42 PM Page 59
DON’T OVERLOOK TRASH THAT COULD DOUBLE AS DÉCOR. Here we collected 002’s designing dude’s favorite coffee and lined a useless empty shelf in the kitchen (’cause it’s too high) creating instant (and recycled!) art.
DON’T LIVE WITH BARE WALLS, OR FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO HAVE FANCY ART. DO frame your own art, or your kids’ masterpieces, or anything that makes you happy. Try to keep the frames uniform. IKEA has a great variety at great prices.
Do sit back and relax in your new nest! july 10 | www.002mag.com .59

ADIES WHO LUNCH (AND THEIR MANLY COUNTERPARTS) WILL BE HAPPY TO HEAR THAT THIS LONGSTANDING SAKS INSTITUTION IS BACK! AND BETTER THAN EVER! WITH THE BRAINS BEHIND ÜBER-HIP HEARSAY GASTRO LOUNGE DOWNTOWN AT THE HELM, EXPECT UPDATES TO OLD CLASSICS AT THE NEW 51FIFTEEN RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE.
Executive CHEF PEDRO SILVA still heads the kitchen but is now the master of his own menu. Gone is the Grille 5115 phonebook menu and in its place is a streamlined showing of Latin and French influenced treats of Silva’s creation. Rest assured, guests who still crave something from the old menu, Silva is happy to oblige. Located on the second floor of SAKS, its highly convenient entrance off Westheimer with its own valet means you don’t ever have to step foot into the Galleria. This also means extended hours. Contrary to popular belief, they have their own hours that do not coincide with that of The Galleria. In other words, they are open even after The Galleria closes. I dropped in for lunch and was reminded of why I used to make this haunt my go-to shopping lunch stop. The large windows beam in natural light and you instantly get this surge of joy. Like a flower basking in the sunlight, you are drawn to the beams. The décor of neutral palates only enhances the light airiness of the space. Golds, white, silvers, gray and touches of black define the various dining experiences. The darker palate is more prominent in the lounge and bar.
Designer Jay Clues’ idea with keeping things “light” is to display the colorful food and clientele. Being that you are technically in The Galleria, fashion reigns supreme and what better way to let the fashion-savvy shine then keeping things minimal. But let’s not overlook the breathtaking massive white roses sculpture that extends along the length of the main dining area wall by Houston-based Navid Gheami. If you remember the old banquettes and mesh installation that once occupied this space, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at this most welcome beauty. The “Rose Wall” features programmable LED lighting system that allows the artwork to be lit in a variety of colors. Most noticeable in the evening, your eyes do not deceive you, the color can change from a calm blue to vibrant red all in one dining experience. While perusing the lunch menu, everything from the appetizers to salads to sandwiches to the entrées had either Latin or French flair. After reading your choices, deciding what you’re craving will be the hardest part. I went from ceviche to tostadas to wanting the crepes just in the reading process.

Being that it was lunch, I went light. We had the spicy crabmeat and lobster ceviche, roasted poblano soup, baked stuffed chicken and the grilled wild salmon. Other dishes that peaked my interest were the chicken and wild mushroom crepes and the filet mignon stuffed with jalapeno and asiago cheese topped with port wine reduction and a side of lobster ravioli. The filet is only a taste of the manlier dishes should your counterpart be joining you for lunch or an evening out. Our ceviche and poblano soup came out first and were a refreshing way to start out the meal. A hefty amount of crabmeat, lobster and avocado wet in a light, citrus cocktail sauce are presented in a cocktail glass accompanied with crispy plantains. A creative twist to the traditional chip. I was delighted that sauce was light and less dense. It really allowed the freshness and quality of the seafood to shine without masking its flavor. The roasted poblano soup has a homemade quality to the flavor. It was as if my grandmother were in the kitchen wiping it up. Little tortilla crisps and cheese are added on top to melt within the soup. A slight poblano kick lingers in the background. Our baked chicken and grilled wild salmon provided a different flavor to test all that Silva had to offer. The baked stuffed chicken is a breast stuffed with spinach, sundried tomatoes and goat cheese topped with a red wine reduction. It came accompanied with mash potatoes and green beans. The tender, juicy chicken packed a significant amount of meat with each ingredient. I love goat cheese and it melted and acted like the glue ensuring pieces of spinach and tomato in each bite. The grilled wild salmon filet was topped with shrimp in a tequila lime butter sauce. It was also accompanied with sweet potato mash, spinach and broccoli. I was very fond of the generous amount of veggies as sides with both dishes. It’s a nice turn away from heavy, dressed up sides along with an entrée. The filet was flakey, not overcooked (something that occurs often with salmon) and the tequila lime butter sauce was sinful! The salmon isn’t drenched but merely dressed in the sauce. It’s worth every bite and you’ll appreciate those veggie sides. Delighted with lunch, I’m counting the days until I can make it back in to eat those chicken and mushroom crepes and sample a few cocktails from the first class program from Hearsay mixologist Anthony Montz. It sounds like the perfect start or end (hello, lounge!) to an evening.

That little corridor off Highway 6 where a few restaurants intersect is home to Las Ventanas. A HACIENDA STYLE STRUCTURE COMPLETE WITH WATER FOUNTAIN IN FRONT MEANS YOU’RE AT THE RIGHT SPOT. Inside, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into someone’s “hacienda.” Decorative touches throughout from pillows, to wall coverings, to lamps are expertly placed even to the beautifully landscaped “back yard.” A lounge area, tables and even a kid’s section are all enclosed in the back. It’s really an expansive place. We stopped in during happy hour to get a taste of all they had to offer. Being from the same group who brought us Las Alamedas, I knew I would not be disappointed. The same salsa recipe remains for the chips. It’s awesome! And the margaritas, although not as potent, are very smooth, quite perfect to take down. We snacked on their sopes, ceviche, nachos and queso fundido. The sopes are perfectly crispy with a layer of refried beans, chicken (or beef), shredded lettuce and queso fresco. Three come in one order with sour cream and green salsa for dressing. The ceviche is shrimp, lump crab and white fish with avocado, capers, carrot slices and onions in a pickled lime juice. No cocktail sauce in this version, folks. The seafood really has to be fresh in order to shine in this rendition and it certainly does. The nachos are chicken (or beef) smothered in cheese with a heap of sour cream, avocado, jalapenos and guacamole on each piece. Perfection! We ordered the queso fundido with rajas and were served a combo of rajas and cheese perfect for wrapping in a corn tortilla. You get a generous amount of cheese and rajas so each bite has a bit of both. If you’re looking for authentic Mexican fare, not just TexMex, Las Ventanas has you covered. 68. july 10 | www.002mag.com
NO, IT’S NOT A “NEW” RESTAURANT BUT IT IS A NEW LOCATION WITH THE SAME EXCELLENT FARE AT UNBEATABLE PRICES. And it’s quite different from the others. The exterior gives you no clue to the gem that lies within. Modern is not a suitable descriptor; it’s like a piece of art. Art adorns all the walls, from sketches to acrylics to prints. It’s all there and breathes a creative, artistic vibe into the Washington area. The massive dining area is flanked by an incredible 4x4 (yes, actual wood 4x4 pieces) art installation titled “The Nest” – amazing way to take such a mundane (yet vital) material and turn it into something awe-inspiring. “The Nest” has an added value, a bar, nestled inside of it on the opposite side. They stay open until 3am for late night dining so now Les Givral’s can be a destination spot rather than just a starting point. I had a half order of my favorite – #42, the char-grill shrimp – on rice and tried their imperial rolls for the first time. I love the presentation served with the roll. A mound of Romaine lettuce, mint and parsley lie beside it with a cup of fish sauce. The idea is to wrap the roll in the greens, dip it in the fish sauce and prepare to be amazed. The number #42 is pretty much as described. I like to add some peanut sauce and Siracha for kick. However you like to “dress it” or order it, make sure you do it at this location. The food and décor are otherworldly.
This Heights house converted into a restaurant is the closest thing you’ll get to a home-cooked meal in town. Chef Jamie Zelko kept it simple and traditional with innovative techniques. Hence, her Captain’s Crunch fried chicken. So too with the décor. Mason Jars double as light fixtures; dish towels as napkins. It has a rustic, farmhouse feel which makes settling in easy. We loved the bruschetta with its hummus, feta cheese, red peppers, shallots, garlic, olive slivers, basil and parsley combo. The flavors are bright and refreshing together. I had to try the signature Captain’s Crunch fried chicken. Farm chicken is crusted with just the perfect layer of crunch served atop Yukon mashed potatoes with shallot jam and pea shoots. It’s surprisingly light and not as oily as you’d expect. It’s got such a homemade quality to it that it reminded me of something my mother would whip up rather than the commercial, overly crusted fried chicken you see elsewhere, where you eat more fried bits than chicken. We also had the seasonal market catch, which on our visit was grouper. I’m a huge fan of this presentation of a tomato and pineapple compote and white asparagus served atop an arugula salad. Each component with the bite of the arugula salad is awesome. The fish was cooked to absolute fall apart in your mouth perfection. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the number of diners ordering dessert. Among the most popular – their lemon icebox. I went with the special fudge brownie dessert with an ice cream. Another homemade delight. A NOTE: THEY DON’T TAKE RESERVATIONS, SO I WOULD RUN, NOT WALK, OVER TO ZELKO’S WHILE THERE’S STILL SPACE!

SHOCKiNG! HOUSTON CAUGHT iN TORRiD LOVE AffAiR WiTH SOCCER! Houston makes a date with the MLS All-Stars game and 70,000 fans at Reliant Stadium…despite its proclaimed love of football. By Nadia Michel | Photography by Tom Pennington
“I’m sure sex wouldn’t be so rewardIng as thIs world Cup. It’s not that sex Isn’t good but the world Cup Is every four years and sex Is not.” Ronaldo | BRazilian socceR playeR, afteR winning 2002 woRld cup.
ON JULY 28, MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER’S BEST PLAYERS WILL FACE OFF AGAINST MANCHESTER UNITED (THE SPORT’S MOST VALUABLE FRANCHISE IN THE WORLD, ACCORDING TO FORBES) RIGHT HERE, IN THE STATE WHERE MOVIES LIKE FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS ARE SET. After all these years of being the quintessential American football state, Texas has cracked the door open for European football aka soccer. To be fair, Houston is not necessarily classic Texas, but nonetheless, this is a major breakthrough. It’s a dream come true for local soccer enthusiasts, who have been trying to gain some attention for the sport for years. The summer’s hottest sports craze arguably kicked off May 13, when Mexico’s national soccer team played Angola at Reliant Stadium. A friend reported she saw the Mexican players being mobbed while shopping at the Galleria, as clamoring fans demanded autographs from the quasi-rock stars. It’s no surprise, either, as our neighbors from south of the border seem to enjoy our mega-sized malls, often making up the bulk of the line at high-end boutiques. You can bet they’ll be first in line for the All-Stars game, too. But it’s not just a Latin thing. That game also drew a solid homegrown crowd. “When we looked at ticket sales, we saw that there were people from half the states,” says Jamey Rootes, president of the Texans. Also, Houston has a large European community that comes to work in the oil and gas industry. The result? “Houston has proven itself to be a great soccer market,” says Chris Canetti, Chief Operating Officer for Houston’s Dynamos. Soccer has been sneaking up on us for about fourteen years now, when the Major League Soccer Association was formed. “Fifteen years ago, kids didn’t have a league to look up to. Now they do,” says Canetti. Indeed, more kids play soccer in the U.S. than any other sport. And now, those kids are buying tickets. Furthermore, the Houston Dynamos have been putting on a pretty good show for the past five years. “We’ve tried to capture that authentic soccer vibe that exists around the globe,” says Canetti. The enthusiasm at Dynamo games is undeniably infectious: there is singing and horns, plenty of pageantry and a sea of orangeclad fans. The kicker, though, is how successful the team has been. “The most important thing is being a winner, and we’ve been successful with that,” observes Canetti.

The All-Stars game may be just the beginning of soccer-mania. With this newly acquired field cred, Houston can proclaim itself among the top soccer cities in the United States. That may be a point for us when the time comes for the FIFA committee to name the hosts of the FIFA World Cup™ in 2018 and 2022. Houston is among 18 candidates put forth by the USA Bid Committee, supported by high-profile names like Brad Pitt, Spike Lee and Arnold Schwarzenegger. In the event the World Cup does come to the U.S., the All-Stars game just might give us the edge we need as a city. “We have the facilities, we have the market…I know that Houston has everything that it takes to handle this kind of event. And also, everyone is friendly, and that makes a big difference,” states Rootes. As for the rivalry between football and soccer? Well, Houston seems happily engaged in a ménage a trois. “We want to build interest in pro sports, we want pro sports to be viewed positively,” says Rootes, the football man. In other words, the more sports fans come to Houston, the better. Success breeds success. “There’s nothing bigger than football in Texas. We are never going to be football, but there are a lot of fans who love soccer,” says Canetti. Posh and Beckham have crossed the pond. The bigger challenge is exporting American football to the rest of the world.

BAMA
boyz
IF YOU’VE HEARD BEYONCE’S “WHY DON’T YOU LOVE ME,” FROM I AM… SASHA FIERCE, THEN YOU’VE HEARD THE BAMA BOYZ. CHANCES HAVE IT IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD THAT SONG, YOU’VE STILL HEARD THE BAMA BOYZ. EDDIE “E-TREZ” SMITH III, JESSE J. RANKINS AND JONATHAN D. WELLS HAD THIS TO SAY: So you guys really got to Houston right before everything exploded in 2004 and 2005. You’ve always been involved with a different scene, but did you get wrapped up in that at all? Jonathan: I think we were definitely down with the whole Houston movement. It was a great movement, and it’s still going on. But I think musically we just kind of stuck to what we did and we never really conformed. We had our sound and we just kind of grew it. And of course there’s… you win some, you lose some, even, doing it that way. But we thought that was the best back then and we still think it is to this day. We’re reaping the benefits of it to this day. Eddie: We felt the energy, the energy if anything. Just kind of how we see music anyway. Whenever there’s a lot of people in the room jumping up and down for something, it’s just energy more than anything, and we felt the energy of the city. We were here before that whole… Downtown started booming. We got here before that – the train and everything, I think it was the Super Bowl that they launched it. When we got here, it was exciting for us because the city was still new for us, seeing all the excitement and then Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Chamillionaire and all of that started happening in this city, it was exciting. To be quite honest with you, at that time we were more leaning in the pop scene, the stuff we were doing over at Music World, but it was around those guys that… it was inspiring. To go out into the club at night and just see the people that’s making a national – and international)– movement on the world. It inspired us to just… we were like ‘wow, we picked the right city.’ It was just perfect. You talk about being involved in the pop scene, but really the way you guys produce, you’re sort of genre-less, with what you produce and how you do it. Do you attribute that to what you grew up listening to? Jesse: We grew up listening to everything. I mean, I speak personally, in my house, my mom was the biggest Babyface/Luther Vandross fan. My dad loved blues, and then they all liked gospel. They didn’t like rap, though. They wouldn’t let me listen to rap. But when I went to school, all my friends listened to rap. And then by the time I was in high school – me and Eddy was in high school together – we went to school that was really, really diverse. It was really multicultural and so that’s when I got turned on to like everything from Drew Hill and just a bunch of other people that I would have never listened to growing up from my neighborhood, because everybody woulda joked on you and been like ‘why you listening to that?’ I think I learned then, man, that I realized that I was just like I just like music. From that point on, if I like it, I’ll listen to it. I do think it has a lot to do with how we grew up, and being in Alabama, it’s kind of like a melting pot. You get Atlanta, Tennessee, everything from New Orleans to Florida. So you get a lot of different info thrown at you.
Eddie: Lance, I want to thank you because this is the first interview where somebody actually said that, like the ‘genre-less’ thing. That’s how we feel. It’s easier for somebody in the industry as far as being able to place it somewhere, but they always want us to carve one out. But it’s probably the hardest thing for us to do in our career right is to pick our genre – what’s our genre? When you remix a track, do you look at it from the perspective of developing a new angle from which to see the song or do you try and make another idea fit under the existing one? Jonathan: We do a lot of remixing, and even a lot of things we did at first at Music World was remixes. But as producers, we always tried to bring something new. Sometimes we’d listen to the old record, sometimes we didn’t even want to listen to the old record. Just give us the a capellas. We’ll start from a blank canvas and just kind of envision what it could be, and to translate that musically and put it out. The biggest question, I think is: what do we want people to do with it? Was it a dance song already, and now we wanna make this a chill ride. Or this is a song that, when it drops, all the girls run to the dance floor and lose they mind. That’s how we approach the remixes. We try and pick something different from what it’s already doing and show it in a different light. Eddie: On the low, we’re big country fans. We just started working with this label, you know, just working in Nashville more. Country records are great records with great songs, and sometimes I feel like they miss some listeners just because it’s twangy and it’s guitars, live drums and everything. But I feel like ‘man, you put those same lyrics over the right beat, and you got a dance floor hit!’ That’s what I love about just being able to take records and remix and rework it. What you give back to the audience can be different. How much of that learning experience one gets from playing live do you bring back into the studio? Jesse: A whole lot, because our stage show is a whole lot different from us working in the studio. We don’t just bring the studio to the stage. So it gives us a chance just to feel the energy of the people. When we come back to the studio, we just take that energy. It kind of helps to see what works and what doesn’t work. A lot of times, you know, we’ll make records, and we’re like ‘aw, man, this is the part where people gonna go bananas.’ And sometimes, that’s not the part where people go bananas or where people get loud. It will be another part where people just go crazy and start dancing. And we’re like ‘hmmm… okay; duly noted.’ Do you think Houston’s a permanent home for you? Eddie: Noooo. We have no permanent home. The only permanent home we have is Alabama. Other than that, we a rolling stone. www.thebamaz.com

LOCALEBRITY: ASHLEY JONES BORN IN MEMPHIS BUT RAISED IN HOUSTON, ASHLEY JONES CAPTIVATED TELEVISION AUDIENCES LAST YEAR WITH HER ROLE AS DAPHNE THROUGHOUT THE SECOND SEASON OF HBO’S CULT VAMPIRE SERIES, TRUE BLOOD. MOST RECENTLY, SHE WRAPPED FILMING THE NEW PILOT REBOOT OF THE ROCKFORD FILES FOR NBC. THE DAYTIME EMMY-NOMINATED ACTRESS, WHO CAN BE SEEN DAILY AS BRIDGET FORRESTER ON THE #1 SERIAL DRAMA IN THE WORLD, THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, SHARES A LITTLE INSIGHT ON LIFE IN HOUSTON AND LIFE IN GENERAL. Is this your intended career path? If not, how did you get here? I believe I came out of the womb wanting to entertain on some level. I can’t remember ever wanting to do or be anything else. What was your first job? My first job ever was a national commercial. I was five. What are your favorite things to do in Houston? Visiting with friends and family ranks pretty high on the list. So does Ninfa’s and Goode Company. My parents love taking long walks for exercise. I always look forward to our walks through River Oaks and Memorial Park. Ima Hogg’s Bayou Bend Home during Christmas and the Holiday Season has become a tradition of sorts, too. In the off-season, I enjoy the gardens. It’s worth the visit. What defines Houston as your “hometown”? My fondest memories of growing up are in Houston. It’s where my family is based. Many of my best friends still have their “base” in Houston, so over holidays we’re all one big family.
eclectic people. The food. Okay, these aren’t so hidden. But, for those of you visiting, here’s a list. And for the natives, here’s a nice reminder. 1) Weather. Yes, the weather. The fact that it can be 90 degrees (or, I know, 100), then suddenly rain and thunderstorm out of nowhere with lightning and the whole nine yards is fascinating. It cools you off and prepares you for dinner on the patio sans jacket, glass of vino in hand. 2) The outskirts of Houston. The city of Richmond. Restaurants like the Swinging Door. Communities like First Colony. 3) Music scene. No, it’s not Austin, but there are great new and old places to go and listen to live music. And the whole Downtown thing is still new to me. I have yet to explore all of it. But House of Blues was a nice start last Christmas. 4) Shopping. Houston has amazing shopping. For anything name brand, there is the Galleria, where one could spend days. Then, you have the boutique scene. Then, the vintage shops. Museum stores... I could keep going.... Texans still have a reputation for bragging. What would you brag about? I brag about being from Texas. I really do. It’s so cliché, but you know how Texans are proud of everything “Texas”? I have the shape of the state in several places around the house: potholders, napkins, beach towels, t-shirts, you name it! And I’m not even trying, it just happens. Tell us about the collaboration with Snoopy? First of all, I love being able to say I’m “collaborating with Snoopy.” Talk about a kid’s dream come true! But, seriously, Snoopy turns 60 this year. Doesn’t he look great for his age!??! He’s hip and edgy and also giving a portion of his proceeds to The Boys and Girls Club. That makes me proud.

Are you named for anyone? Is anyone named after you? Well, I did throw my arm up, hand on forehead and quoted Gone with the Wind when I was three. “Oh, Ashley, Ashley!” But, my Great Grandfather’s name is also Ashley, so I like to pretend it’s a family name. As far as anyone being named after me, I don’t think so. Not my real name. But I receive mail where people are naming their babies after characters I’ve played: ‘Bridget’ (Bold and Beautiful) and ‘Daphne’ (True Blood). What’s your favorite meal? I’m a La Madeleine fan. They actually tweeted me thanking me for coming in the restaurant! We’re tweeting buddies now. I love their fat-free chicken Caesar salad. What do you love about your home? It’s weird. I have a lovely house in Los Angeles with a great yard and garden and patio and BBQ, etc., but there’s something about the smell and comfort of being home at Mom and Dad’s house in Texas. We have a large extended family and as we all know, family can be stressful at times. But, it’s a different kind of stress than I experience in Los Angeles working. I never sleep as well as I do at my mom’s house. It’s just home. In honor of Snoopy’s 60th birthday, we’re giving away 12 of these tanks the month of July! Become a friend on Facebook or follow us on Twitter to get updates.
What do you consider a hidden treasure of Houston? H-town IS a hidden treasure. Where do I begin? The
60 Years of Putting On the Dog! Ashley Jones (True Blood, The Bold and the Beautiful, FlashForward) suits up for the year-long celebration of Peanuts’ 60th Anniversary in a special vintage-inspired Snoopy tank. The top is available exclusively at Forever 21 stores nationwide for $14.90, and a portion of the sales will go to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. SUGARCANE | LATEST WASHINGTON INSTALLATION TASTES LIKE SUMMER 1919 washington ave, houston, tx 77007 | 713.864.9463 | www.sugarcanehouston.com
T
EARING INTO THE SEASON’S FIRST WATERMELON IS A TIME-HONORED TRADITION IN THE SMALL TOWN WHERE I’M FROM. DOUSING IT WITH A HALF BOTTLE OF VODKA, THOUGH, WAS HOW YOU REALLY KNEW SUMMER HAD ARRIVED. FOURTH OF JULY PARADES, CHURCH FUNCTIONS, FUNERALS – DIDN’T MATTER; IF THE BARE FLESH OF ANY KIND OF MELON WAS EXPOSED, IT WAS GETTING FLOODED WITH HOOCH. SUGARCANE, ON 1919 WASHINGTON, UNDERSTANDS THAT INHERENT DESIRE IN ALL HUMANKIND TO GET A BUZZ OFF THOSE FOUR DAILY SERVINGS OF FRUIT.
In the cavernous, red-brick shell of the former hideout Corkscrew, the completely retooled Sugarcane is swimming against the current of its Washington brethren. Sugarcane offers patrons a break from overpriced liquors from countries you couldn’t point out on a map and exotic imported brews, but doesn’t stoop to serving humdrum selections you can find at any other bar in town. Fresh and homegrown is the name of their game. There’s not a beer on their carefully selected list that isn’t brewed in the Lone Star state, and every liquor is either organic or domestically produced. Needless to say, we didn’t go to that trouble where I’m from, but the care Sugarcane takes to ensure Houston gets only the best is paying off and setting them apart from the “other guys.” Sugarcane’s large variety of organic/domestic liquors have no choice but to be crafted into a bevy of imaginative “ECOcktails” with 100% natural fruit juices, simply because that’s the only kind of juice Sugarcane uses. Pure watermelon juice and organic cucumber vodka team up for the summer-ific “Watermelon Refresher,” and the “Sugarmomma” isn’t your mother’s margarita. Not only are their ECOcktails delicious, creative and better for you than your average bev, they’re also quite ECOnomical. With their nothing-to-hide attitude, Sugarcane lists their prices for the world to see, and as if they weren’t reasonable enough, they knock two bucks off (and $1 off beers) for happy hour Monday through Friday from 4 to 7.
Sugarcane’s location (and abundance of parking) on the slightly less developed section of The Wash lends itself to being the perfect locale for kicking off or winding down an evening. The crowd is an eclectic mix of Houstonians who aren’t afraid to try something a little off the beaten Washington path. You’ll find more conversation here than booming bass, more catching up with old friends than catching up on the latest Astros beat-down (not a TV in the joint) and more care for the community than most other places that are content to just sling booze for profit. The art that hangs on the walls is all created by local artists. Whoopty-doo, right? Well, Sugarcane takes it a step further and donates their cut of the profit from sales to the contributing artist’s designated charity of choice. Maybe Sugarcane is just creatively riding the health trend or the organic craze into unexplored territories, but I like to think that the visions of my American youth, filled with sparklers, eating too many hotdogs and getting kicked out of church picnics with a half-empty bottle of vodka under my shirt were somehow involved. Never mind how it all came together – Houston…summer is go for launch!

Bea Here Now By Beatrice Valencia
HELLO SUMMER! FOR THE NEXT 3 MONTHS, I EXPECT NOTHING LESS THAN THE EXCRUCIATING HEAT AND HUMIDITY THAT DEFINES HOUSTON SUMMERS. YOU KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT, A LAYER OF MOISTURE INSTANTLY ON YOUR SKIN, CAR TEMPERATURES READING IN THE TRIPLE (INSANE) DIGITS, SO WARM IN YOUR CAR YOU ACTUALLY GET GOOSE BUMPS. THESE 3 MONTHS I’M WILLING TO ENDURE FOR OUR BEAUTIFUL SPRING AND FALL SEASONS. AS A MATTER OF FACT, I WOULDN’T WANT IT ANY OTHER WAY. THESE ARE THE SUMMERS I REMEMBER FROM MY CHILDHOOD. STAYING OUT UNTIL THE SUN WENT DOWN, ABSORBING ALL THE INFORMATION THAT CAME MY WAY VIA THE NEIGHBORHOOD KIDS. THE SUMMER HAS A WAY TO AWAKEN MY INNER CHILD. IT’S LIKE A RUSH OF ENERGY TO GET OUT THERE AND EXPLORE WHILE THERE’S STILL ALL THIS DAYLIGHT LEFT! THIS MONTH, I DISCOVER INNOVATIVE SUSHI, ULTIMATE RELAXATION AND AUTHENTIC TEX-MEX THAT CAN’T BE BEAT.
Sushi Rak-who? SUSHI RAKU 3201 Louisiana St. 713.526.8885
amazingly it does! The sea salt burst in between the yellowtail, blueberry, bright cilantro and bite of the jalapeno is phenomenal. I most definitely had dessert – the chocolate molten cake which needs 15 minutes to prepare. Cleaned that plate too! Although the service can be spotty (something they are working on), the quality and innovation is supreme.
My once-a-month indulgence… LIFETIME SPA CityCentre 815 Town and Country Lane 713.464.1200 www.lifetimefitness.com After attempting to get in around their opening date, I finally waited out the masses to sneak in a taste of what the entire buzz has been about. Saturday night, Memorial Day weekend, the masses flee Houston for bodies of water. Their good fortune is my advantage. First off, the décor is insane. Red is the color of choice. The bar is draped and wrapped in this wild red rope installation. We opted for this area to dine rather than their dining room. I immediately ordered their ebi mayo to start and the suggested beef tataki. Fried rock shrimp is served in a spicy yuzu mayonnaise. It’s AWESOME! I dream about this dish. The beef tataki is thinly sliced beef (think carpaccio) with shaved Parmesan slices, jalapeno, some arugula – all lightly dressed in combo that includes truffle oil. It was another stunner. The freshness and quality are unsurpassed. And it was constant through the meal. Not full, we ordered the spicy tuna roll with a modification and the lady Hama. The spicy tuna had avocado, jalapeno, scallion and white sesame seeds. We modified adding peppered tuna sashimi pieces on top. Another suggestion. I was reeling and giddy from just how delicious everything was. It was slowly winning a place in my heart. We finished with the lady Hama. Thinly sliced yellowtail is presented with white citrus soy, cilantro, jalapeno, blueberries and sea salt. This combo would’ve never occurred to work in my mind but

I’m not the type to get massages or regular manicures and pedicures. Half the reason is I don’t like people rubbing on me and the other half is I can polish my own nails. This all changed after my spa day at Lifetime Fitness. I still don’t get massages, but I do get regular facials. I can’t lie though, with my facial, I get a mini massage on my face, neck, arms and shoulders. Melissa, my facialist, is awesome! She recommends but never pushes treatments or products. We discuss my skin issues and see what we can do to minimize them. She also keeps track of my skin’s progress so I know I’m getting results. Not to mention, when you book a spa treatment, you can check out their fitness center for the day. And their amenities are not bad at all! The Spa is serene, dimly lit and comfortable. You have instant access from the ladies locker room where you are provided with a locker for your belongings and a Spa robe. It’s one indulgent thing that I’m happy I’ve found. Not only for my skin’s sake, but sanity. There’s nothing like escaping the real world for 90 minutes of pampering.
Tex-Mex. Often imitated but never replicated… EL TIEMPO CANTINA 1308 Montrose Blvd. 713.807.8996 www.eltiempocantina.com My fiancé has been working in Puerto Rico for the last month. On his last visit to Houston, the first thing he wanted was a margarita and queso. He, along with me and a long list of traveling Houstonians I know, misses our outstanding Tex-Mex. And you don’t necessarily realize how good it is until you go elsewhere and are served a sham they call Tex-Mex or even Mexican! On a visit up north once, I was served “white queso.” Not Escalante’s white queso but white American cheese melted in a bowl. I was insulted. On another occasion in LA, I was served porridge-like tortilla soup. It shouldn’t have a thick consistency, folks. All of these low points made me realize we are truly spoiled. You can’t even find Velveeta or Rotel in other states to make queso! So our first stop after errands was here. Happy Hour. Ritas. Guacamole and queso. It really doesn’t get any better than that.

cd reviews By Lance Scott Walker
A FEW NEW AMBIENT RELEASES TO SHARE WITH YOU THIS MONTH. OPEN UP:
TELEGRAPH CABIN Backward Flight EP (self-released) “Endless Curfew” drops in as both a perfect opener and a perfect description of its contents, as it works as a series of teases, movements fading in and out with the promise of going one direction and then never delivering. Guitars provide the rhythm over the tapping of a real telegraph, which is ultimately done away with by song’s end. The subsequent tracks turn tail and move away from ambient almost altogether, moving swiftly to the classical swing between New Age and the ever-present Dark Ambient genre, painting a creepy but intricate backdrop that merges all three moods by the time the EP’s closer, the 7minute “Train To Valencia,” takes it all out with exactly the promise hinted at in the first track.
BGUDNA Safe Harbor (self-released) Icelandic ambient composer Bjorgvin Gudnason etches in hard, foot to the floor beats (okay, for an ambient release) that bring about a sort of industrial discipline to the music. It’s not that the beats are all that hard-hitting; it’s that they have a machine-like quality to their tempo that holds the rest of the music hostage. It’s too bad, because the synths on this record, although a little milky and hard to understand the texture of, sound even more washed out in the wake. And there is possibility in their melodies. In short, the rhythms don’t have enough give in them to really embrace the rest of the sound. They stand apart from it, and not from a way that makes them stand out, but makes them sit on top.
VISUELLE MUSIK Solmis’olre Domir’emi (Luxus-Arctica) The highlight for many who pick this up is that it comes with a 19page PDF booklet that weighs in at heavy, heady, pretentious and refreshing all at the same time. That’s because it contains a lengthy explanation of basically how the entire album was created, filling a void for some and creating a chasm between the artist and other listeners. But really, we’re in a time when album art is shrinking, both as an art form and as a presence. This doesn’t do much in respect to the former, but its quantity and thought has to be appreciate. Oh… musically, Germany’s Mathias Brüssel ventures into a subdued eclectic territory on the album’s 9 tracks. Distractions make for the beats, with voices and noises culminating in the pulses that drive everything along. And that’s the weak point: Brüssel seems wanton to pick up the pace throughout, never rushing anything but never quite allowing the sounds to pick up air and float around. All that hurrying around to get to the end of the record does pay off, though: “Kraakdoos” is an apt closer, its multiple synth lines weaving around one another to spin themselves into brilliant circles and tidy everything up. Booklet’s good.
