’m still not over the fact that we didn’t really get a winter this year; and now we are full speed ahead into the dead heat of summer, and I still don’t have exciting summer plans.

But after shooting our cover and subsequent fashion pages in Beachtown Galveston, I foresee us spending some of this summer there. I hadn’t visited since Hurricane Ike hit but on the day we went, CARLA VALENCIA DE MARTINEZ the beach was beautiful. Granted it’s no Caribbean, but it’s under an hour’s drive away, the beach itself is huge with plenty of space to run or veg out, and destinations like Beachtown are a welcome upgrade to the dodgier establishments I remember. What makes these shoots so amazing, I think, is how much local talent we strive to include. We produce all of our shoots, from the concept to the production to what you see in your hand right now – it’s all team work. And I am so proud of all of our freelance photographers and writers. The models are both local, and it’s such a small world that on the day of our shoot, coincidentally, my husband (who also happens to be the publisher of 002houston magazine) was at the sports club chatting to his locker neighbor who mentioned that the guy who’s renting out his garage apartment happened to be shooting his first magazine assignment for 002houston. Check out models Drake and Jennifer on page 34. There is so much going on this month that it truly is a great time to summer in the city. This issue is jam-packed with new store openings, concerts, events and more. And if you really do need an escape, check out the other easy one in our destination– Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin. See you in July,

1. THE MENIL COLLECTION www.menil.org

This World Is Not My Home: Danny Lyon Photographs, on view thru July 29, is an exhibition of approximately 45 photographs and photographic montages tracing the evolution of the New York- and New Mexico-based artist’s career from 1962 to the present. A leading and explosively creative figure in the American street photography movement of the 1960s, Lyon distinguished himself from peers like Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand and Lee Friedlander through his exceptionally strong political consciousness and concern for those on the margins of society. This World… celebrates the artist’s 70th birthday and the extraordinary gift to the museum of 75 important photographs from the 1960s by Edmund Carpenter and Adelaide de Menil in 2010.

large gallery. The exhibition features two artists who share a background in metalsmithing and an interest in creating largescale wall installations from small, sometimes delicate, pieces referencing flora and fauna. Their shared interests come together in this lushly ornamental exhibition, which features past works by both artists, along with an entirely new, collaborative wall installation made specifically for Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC). 5. When recreating a work that means something to you personally as you did with “St. Matthew and the Angel,” is it a bundle of nerves to try and get it right or do you just trust your hands? The project of the recreation of St. Matthew and the Angel was the final step of a long-term fascination with Caravaggio. I fell in love with his paintings when I was a teenager, and during my years in Rome I studied his technique exhaustively. I was reading books about the Old Masters’ techniques and any publication I could find about the restoration of Caravaggio’s paintings. By the time I decided to approach this project, I had already done many small and medium-sized copies of his work. In this situation, the challenge was working from the only black and white photo shot before the destruction of the painting during World War II. Through the comparison of the other Caravaggio paintings, I had to guess what might have been the color scheme of “St. Matthew and the Angel.” I guess, like all of my paintings, I know that if I’m not 100% present while I’m painting I will spend a lot of time fixing mistakes later. I guess I wasn’t tense but more concentrated because my work requires a lot of attention. What did that experience teach you about your own creative process? My research on Caravaggio is at the base of my current paintings. For as much as my work might look dissimilar to Caravaggio’s, that period of experimentation is at its core. I think that the St. Matthew represented a sort of closure, after which I could dedicate myself to my new production. It also occurred to me how fictional the backgrounds in Caravaggio’s paintings are and how the illusion of a space is resolved simply with variations of dark colors. I decided to go in the opposite direc-

tion by staging my characters against textured and pure white background. This would allow me to emphasize the figures and their interactions. With the digital manipulation that took place with your Retrocorionica project, do you feel like the images gain something new when the oils lose textur e in the scanning? I love the texture and the surface of my paintings and I will try to transfer that feeling to my prints. I hope I will be able to apply my knowledge in the preparation of supports (canvas or paper) to the printing process. An oil painting is an image at its best. It has intrinsic value in the texture, uniqueness, craftsmanship, and it will last for centuries. On the other hand, I’m approaching printing not as a mirror reproduction of the paintings but as the only possible way to make single paintings and characters interact with each other in the Retrocorionica frieze. I like to see the single painting lose its autonomy and gain new nuances if seen in the larger context.

the crisis in the Western world that is spiritual before economical. And I use the word crisis referring to the Latin meaning of turning point, so not necessarily with a negative connotation. From this point of view, the question is if the social media are really social and if the ease, velocity and quantity of information exchanged (many times at the price of quality) that forces us to longer hours in front of a device really help us to interact. For my work, narcissism is essential. My characters are completely self-involved. Also when they cooperate, they do so in an awkward way that is difficult to comprehend. Nevertheless, they have no second thoughts or doubts. They are charged with a nervous energy that keeps them from stopping and thinking.

I fell in love with his paintings when I was a teenager, and during my years in Rome I studied his technique exhaustively. I was reading books about the Old Masters’ techniques and any publication I could find about the restoration of Caravaggio’s paintings.

With the changes we’ve seen in social media in recent years, what with the infatuation with image and the narcissism that the web has bred, has it changed anything about your work? My work is a lot about what is innate in humans and what changes in time. In particular, I focus on

And what’s your next project?

I’m planning to keep working on this project for a few years. I imagine a large procession, a sort of great diaspora with hundreds of characters departing to the left and to the right from an initial central group. It is a very demanding project. Every picture (usually 30x56 inches) takes an average of two months between the conception, the drawings and the actual painting. So I guess this will keep me busy for a while. www.fabiodaroma.com

LET THERE BE LIGHT IN TIMES OF DARKNESS. THE CHILDREN’S ASSESSMENT CENTER IN HOUSTON SHEDS RAYS OF LUMINOSITY DAILY IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES AS THEY COPE WITH THE DARK REALITY AND IMPACT OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE, WHILE VIGOROUSLY MOVING FORWARD WITH ITS NEWLY LAUNCHED CAPITAL CAMPAIGN TO RAISE $30 MILLION TO SUPPORT FACILITY EXPANSION. THE DARK SIDE. Child sexual abuse has triggered colossal waves on the social fabric of our society—affecting every socioeconomic group and ethnicity. It can be challenging to discuss sexual abuse and even more difficult to acknowledge that sexual abuse of children of all ages happens every day. At the extreme end of this phenomenon is sexual intercourse; nevertheless, all offenses that involve sexually touching a child, as well as non-touching offenses and sexual exploitation are just as harmful to a child’s well-being. Children are often robbed of their childhood and experience a loss of trust, feelings of guilt and self-abusive behavior and are 40% more likely to be arrested for a violent crime as an adult. Oftentimes, antisocial behavior, depression, identity confusion and loss of self-esteem follow victims into their pubescent years and even adulthood, if symptoms are not detected early and treated, timely. Vulnerable children, their families and non-offending caregivers impacted by child sexual abuse are deserving of brighter futures. And, under the helm of Elaine Stolte, executive director of The Children’s Assessment Center, coupled with compassionate, unified efforts by a hard-working, committed staff, a dedicated board of directors, and meticulously trained volunteers, there is light at the end of the tunnel. THE LIGHT. Founded in 1991, The Children’s Assessment Center (“CAC”), a 501(c)(3), collaborative public/private partnership of Harris County Commissioners Court

and The Children’s Assessment Center Foundation, provides a professional, compassionate and coordinated approach to the treatment of sexually abused children in Harris County and is heralded as one of the largest accredited advocacy centers in the nation. The 52,000sq. ft., state-of-the-art facility serves approximately 5,000 clients annually, was scrupulously designed to provide welcoming, child-friendly intervention systems for the most effective service delivery to sexually abused children and their families. A consortium of professionals centralized in one location from 45 partner agencies, including social workers, physicians, attorneys and law enforcement professionals – The CAC provides a continuum of comprehensive, coordinated services, all with the common goal of protecting children. Thanks to the hospitality and extensive knowledge of Tammy Hetmaniak, community outreach coordinator for The CAC, I experienced an all-inclusive tour of the awe-inspiring facility — where I departed feeling that sexually abused children treated at The CAC can anticipate brighter days and opportunities to lead productive, normal lives. Per Hetmaniak, “From technologically advanced forensic services (interview-

ing program enabling children to disclose abuse while being digitally recorded, allowing all professionals involved to view recorded statements, eliminating trauma from repeat interviews); to state-of-the-art, non-invasive medical equipment utilized during sexual abuse examinations to minimize child discomfort and fear; to a variety of crisis intervention and psychological evaluations and therapy sessions; to a diverse team of professionals on site to handle every facet of the investigative process — The CAC’s matchless framework ensures that all abused children in Harris County have access to our services.” The numbers of sexually abused children in Harris County continues to soar, warranting facility and fundraising expansion to ensure long-term sustainability. Having reached the halfway mark of its current “Restoring Hope, Rebuilding Lives Capital Campaign” during winter 2012, The CAC anticipates meeting its $30 million goal in the months to come, culminating with full expansion complete by fall 2014. Per Jill Buja, development director for The CAC, “Since our current building was built in ’98, our staff has increased by 81% and the number of partner agencies has quadrupled. Additional space is critical to accommodate our growth. It’s no secret that training is essential to prevention. Expansion to our current facility will afford us new training space for our firstresponders, staff and volunteers and additional work space to accommodate our staff and partnering agencies.” The Children’s Assessment Center The John M. ART FILMS ARE GOOD FOR THE SOUL…TAKE A FRIEND TO ONE.

ALIENS, PERVERTS, AND TREES – OH, MY! I’m a sucker for film programs with titles like “A Pervert’s Guide By Sarah Gish to Cinema” so I am happy to report that the Contemporary Arts Museum (www.camh.org) is spicing up their “Cineplex” offerings this month with a program curated by British filmmaker Sophie Fiennes (sis to Ralph and others) that looks at twisted films such as “Blue Velvet” as well as Sophie’s films, which are screening on June 7, 14 and 21. “Tribulation 99: Alien Anomalies Under America” screens on 6/21 at 7:30pm and “Be Johnny: Cityscope,” a live audio-visual performance on 6/28 at 7:30pm with Bree Edwards of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts and co-founder of Be Johnny (www.bejohnny.com), a video design studio she created with Johnny DeKam. • Congrats to SWAMP (www.swamp.org) on their 25th anny! Not only do they produce “The Territory,” the longest running indie film showcase on public television but they also support filmmakers by serving as a fiscal sponsor. They recently did just that for Leah White, who created a film to accompany her CD “Our Roots are Strong” (www.ourrootsarestrong.com). That 3-minute snippet will air at 14 Pews (www.14pews.org) on 6/1 at 6:30pm.

KID FUN-O-RAMA The Aurora Picture Show (www.aurorapictureshow.org) and I have teamed up on a cool “Popcorn Kids” shorts screening: “I Can Do Anything!” featuring films by, about and for kids on Friday, 6/8, at dusk at Discovery Green (www.discoverygreen.com). • The Aurora is showing off their lovely new home at 2442 Bartlett Street with the 15th Annual Extremely Shorts Film Festival on 6/29 and 6/30 and they’re presenting a film workshop for kids on 6/9 and all ages on 6/16. The Museum of Fine Arts Houston (www.mfah.org) has an eclectic line-up of films this month: “Payback,” an interesting film about debt of all kinds, based on writer Margaret Atwood’s work, which screens 6/15 and 6/16; the Turkish film “Once Upon a Time in Anatolia” on 6/22-6/24; and “The Turin Horse” on 6/29-7/1. • Domy Books (www.domystore.com) has a great line-up this month: “Slap Shot” (6/6); “Slim Susie” (6/13); Cinema Bomar (6/15); “My Name is Nobody” (6/20); and “The Jerk” (6/27). • The “48 Hour Film Project” (http://48hourfilm.com/houston/) will be in our town 6/8-10, so if you see film trucks rolling around, that’s why! GREEN IS GOOD The Houston Green Film Series continues at Rice Media Center (www.ricecinema.org). This month’s topic is consumerism in “Growthbusters” which screens 6/27, 6:30pm. • Fathom Events (www.fathomevents.com) has a full slate of one-day-only film screenings, kicking it off with the high energy “Drum Corp at the Movies: 2012 DCI Tour Premiere” on 6/18 and then screening 3 operas live from the Metropolitan Opera: “Anna Bolena” (6/13); “Le Comte Ory” (6/20) and “Don Giovanni” (6/27); check their website for theatres. • Some bigger films opening this month are Ridley Scott’s latest, “Prometheus,” (6/8) and an intriguing film by quirky guy Tim Burton who teamed up with Timur Bekmambetov to make “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” (6/22). Houston-grown Wes Anderson is back in the game with “Moonrise Kingdom,” the story of two twelve-year-olds in love, and actors Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley get wacko in “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” on 6/15. • Movies are taking it to the streets: At El Real Mexican Restaurant, kids can eat free and watch G films on Wednesdays, and Whole Foods/Montrose hosts Friday night films, curated by Alamo Drafthouse (www.drafthouse.com) – 6/8 will be “The Chronicles of Narnia” and 6/22 will be “Ghostbusters.” • Speaking of the Alamo Drafthouse, they’ll be closing down their West Oaks location in 2013 and finding an inner loop space: Can I hear a big “Whooopppeee!”? june 12 | www.002mag.com .25

NEW LIVING IS A HEALTHY, GREEN BUILDING AND HOME STORE LOCATED IN RICE VILLAGE. IT’S A NEW KIND OF BUSINESS CALLED A B-CORPORATION, LEGALLY CHARTERED TO HELP SOLVE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS. TOGETHER WITH THEIR SISTER STORE, THE GREEN PAINTER, THEY OFFER AN EXTENSIVE SELECTION OF RECYCLED, RECLAIMED, ORGANIC AND NONTOXIC PRODUCTS FOR THE HOME, AS WELL AS GREEN DESIGN AND INSTALLATIONS. WITH THIS COLUMN, 002HOUSTON + NEW LIVING WILL BRING YOU THE LATEST AND GREATEST IN ALL THINGS GREEN. By Amanda DeMers Have you ever driven past a modular home park on the side of a freeway? Besides being smelly, reeking of formaldehyde and freezing in the winter, these structures represent many of the things that the green movement has frowned upon – suburban sprawl, cheap and unsustainable production and unhealthy indoor air quality. Introducing a new way to think about pre-fabricated homes, ZFab Housing is a new line of portable, affordable, livable green homes from Houston residential designer and builder, Brett Zamore. Zfab homes are built locally and designed with energy efficiency and indoor air quality in mind. A Houstonian by choice ever since his days at the Rice University School of Architecture, Zamore has grown an impressive business specializing in green, healthy, LEED-accredited homes. Last year, Zamore was the recipient of a U of H Green Building Council Grant to develop his prefab housing, and it’s finally ready!

Cyrus, Ali, Haydeh and Teymour Davoudi

Rob, Maggie, Leighton and Abigail Vermillion

Future homeowners can choose from two efficiency-sized models: a studio at 360 sq. ft. or a one-bedroom at 504 sq. ft. Both are eligible for LEED certification and are built from healthy and green materials. Recycled, renewable and non-off-gassing features can be seen everywhere you look. Designed with energy and water conservation in mind, solar electricity and rain catchment upgrades are available and surprisingly affordable. These buildings can serve many purposes. Looking to move your in-laws out of the house? ZFab homes are great for adding additional living space in your backyard – or for that piece of land you have in the hill country or at the beach. There is even talk about how portable, green housing like this could be placed on urban land waiting to be redeveloped!

For now, ZFab is only available at New Living, but someday it may be sold all over. With prices starting from 65k, someday might be sooner rather than later! Buy yours and have it shipped to virtually anywhere in Texas. Sears pioneered the kit home movement over a century ago, offering quality, dependable homes for the masses in a retail environment. New Living is proud to fill that void today, as we enter the era of more sustainable cities. Zfab Housing offers quality, affordable homes, putting healthy indoor air quality at the forefront of design. Stop by the New Living showroom gallery at 6111 Kirby for a virtual tour.

WITH A GROWING LINE OF LEATHER BRACELETS, CORSETS, SUSPENDERS AND CUFFS, PLUS BLACK RESIN JEWELRY, CHAD SAYS HE FINDS HIS INSPIRATION IN THE TWISTED, THE MORBID AND, YES, IN STYLE ICON DAPHNE GUINNESS.

Why accessories? I’ve always been fascinated with accessories and their power to transform a look. Add a cuff or a corset and you’ve got a whole new outfit that is distinctly yours.

Where do you get your ideas? Everywhere – jellyfish, really old things, nature, aquatic life, owls, circles, horns. If it’s borderline morbid or looks strange or weird, I love it. Where do you find your materials? The leather comes from a store in Bellaire. The nuts and bolts are from hardware stores. I also find things from textile supply stores, flea markets and antique shops. There’s always something I can incorporate in some kind of way. Who are your favorite designers? Number one is Alexander McQueen for his dark brilliance. And I love Philip Crangi – he’s a big inspiration. Who would be your idea customer? Daphne Guinness because she’s amazing. Having her wear one of my octopus tentacles would be incredible.

UBOV AZRIA IS THE CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER FOR BCBGMAXAZRIA GROUP AND ALSO THE WIFE OF MAX AZRIA. LUBOV LEADS THE COMPANY’S DESIGN TEAM AND OVERSEES MARKETING AND MERCHANDISING FOR THE GROUP’S 20-PLUS LABELS, WHICH INCLUDE THE CORE BRAND BCBGMAXAZRIA, THE HIGH-FASHION RUNWAY LABEL AS WELL AS HERVÉ LÉGER AND MAX AZRIA. LUBOV WAS IN TOWN LAST MONTH TO PRESENT THE SPRING/SUMMER COLLECTION AT THE HOME OF LUCINDA LOYA AND WE CAUGHT UP WITH HER FOR A QUICK CHAT.

What do you think has made BCBG such an enduring brand that is able to evolve season after season creating trends? It is the dynamic lifestyle of the modern woman that inspires us to grow our brands, advance our product and improve ourselves. I love Hervé Léger. What was a deciding factor in Max Azria adding the line in 2008? Hervé Léger is about glamour and sensuality – we maintained the couturier heritage while evolving through our distinctive Azria spirit. It is exclusive, intimate and unforgettable while paying tribute to modern femininity. What do you do in your time off? I love to spend time with my family and go to museums and art exhibits. How do you and Max Azria make working together work? Max’s office is on the other side of the building, so we really just meet for lunch. In all seriousness, I think we have an immense level of respect for each other. Max is a visionary, and I’m detail-oriented. We’re each other’s support and love, and that’s why we make a great team.

5 things you always travel with? •A great dress •A pop of color •My iPhone •Aquaphor® Lip Balm •Fiji® Water

What are some great summer trends? Color is the most important trend for the spring and summer collections. People naturally gravitate toward color because it simply makes them happy. This season I’m really in love with orange and all of its shades. Some other great trends you can expect to see this summer include a lot of textures, metal finishes and tribal accents in prints and accessories.

THE CREATIVE, SELF-PROCLAIMED LEADER OF THE FLOCK, AIMEE WOODALL OF MARKETING AND PUBLICITY STUDIO BLACK SHEEP, SHARES HER PICKS OF APPS.

AS A REBEL WHO’S ALWAYS ON THE RUN, I HAVE LEARNED TO EMBRACE MY INNER GEEK AND LET MY TECH-SAVVY FLAG FLY. I SHUDDER TO THINK ABOUT WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO BE A PR PROFESSIONAL BEFORE IPHONES AND IPADS BECAUSE I COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT MINE. AND IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT HAVING A SHINY NEW APPLE PRODUCT (OR ONE OF THOSE OTHER SMART PHONES AND TABLETS) – TRUE PRODUCTIVITY COMES FROM USING THOSE GADGETS TO THEIR FULL POTENTIAL. AND THAT, MY FRIENDS, IS WHY I’M ALL ABOUT THE APPS.

HERE ARE SOME OF MY FAVES, FOR BUSINESS AND FOR PLEASURE. MINT – Finance is a big part of my life, whether I like it or not. This handy app tracks my spending personally and professionally, and keeps me in the black (where I belong). SONGKICK – If I had a personal assistant exclusively dedicated to keeping track of concerts and tour dates (by pouring over my ever-growing music library), then I wouldn’t need this app. Turns out, I do.

48. june 12 | www.002mag.com

PHOTO APPS – I can’t choose just one. Snapseed, Instagram, Camera+, picfx, 8mm, Hipstamatic, PicFrame, Pocketbooth (and the list goes on). PATH – Because sometimes you just have TOO many friends on Facebook and Twitter. It only allows 150 friends so you can keep up with people you really care about. Social media, now with fewer babies and breakfast updates.

MY EYES ONLY – I know a lot of secret information and passwords, and trying to remember all of them can be a giant hassle in my fast-paced world. Plus, it’s a super secure system, so if I happen to lose my phone, I won’t get hacked. HAND JIVES – Even for writers, sometimes words just aren’t enough. Now I have every emotion in the palm of my hand – literally. WUNDERLIST – For when the lists are a mile long. So pretty much every single day. If apps could get worn out, this one would be all but faded away. CINEMAGRAM – I don’t hold still, so why should my photos? Now they don’t, and everyone I know is jealous.

And of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t include the usual suspects like SPOTIFY, Evernote, Pinterest, Flipboard, Wikipedia, Tweetdeck and a handful of silly games. My mother always says, “A girl can never have too many apps” (really, my mom is cool), and I think she’s right. Now if I could just find an app for finding more apps.

BARTON CREEK RESORT+SPA austin,tx ALTHOUGH AUSTIN CAN BE A LITTLE WEIRD TO THE NEWBIE, BY NO MEANS IS IT AN ODD CHOICE FOR A DESTINATION. WHAT GETS ME EVERY TIME IS HOW DIFFERENT THE LANDSCAPE IS A MERE TWO AND A HALF HOURS AWAY FROM HOUSTON. NESTLED IN THE TEXAS HILL COUNTRY, BARTON CREEK RESORT & SPA IS THE PERFECT CHOICE IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN EASY ESCAPE WITH OR WITHOUT THE KIDDOS. I won’t lie: I was not a huge fan of Austin on my first few tries but have been converted. The city’s laidback, easy-going personality is so vastly different from the Space City that it’s a welcome escape. The combination of Barton Creek’s casual elegance with the endless options of outdoor activities will keep you and your family busy. Barton Creek opened about 25 years ago along 4,000 acres in the rolling Hill Country, and has slowly continued to not only maintain its casual elegance but enhance and grow, keeping up with travel trends and the needs of discerning guests. With four nationally acclaimed championship golf courses – Fazio Foothills, Fazio Canyons, Crenshaw Cliffside or Palmer Lakeside (each 18hole course was created by legends of the game) – sure to keep the aficionado busy for days, Barton Creek recently launched “The Game Changer,” an intensive four-day golf program sure to shave strokes off of any golfer’s game through a head-totoe instructional program that seeks to pinpoint problem areas, eliminate bad habits and take participants to a whole new level of golf play. Led by Director of Instruction Brech Spradley, who trained under several of Golf Digest’s 50 Greatest Teachers including Chuck Cook, Mac O’Grady and Ben Doyle, this all-inclusive experience boasts a comprehensive fourday golf “boot camp” that includes a pre-arrival GolfPsych evaluation, nine holes each day, rigorous drills and skill assessments, the latest in fitness instruction by the resort’s Titleist Performance Institute Certified Instructors, spa sessions, meals and

much more. Rates for “The Game Changer” begin at $3,656 per person based on double occupancy and are inclusive of all instruction, accommodations and meals. For more information or to make a reservation, please visit www.bartoncreek.com/gamechanger or call Chase Kelly, Director of Golf Sales, at 512.329.4002. The resort-style pool with impeccable service is where I found myself lounging in the Texas sun most days. But the nature trail on site is perfect for daily hikes. There’s also mini golf, the life-size chess game, kids club and Camp Barton. Dining options abound on site. Light poolside fare is offered at the Pool Cabana while 8212 Wine Bar & Grill offers delicious Texas-influenced dishes. Don’t miss the Pork Carnitas Nachos or the Southwestern Chicken Tortilla Soup. Rock House is beautifully rustic with laidback options, perfect to kick back after a day of activities with a bucket of beer. Three Springs Spas offers an array of treatments in a unique enclave where the beauty of a natural limestone wall has seen pure spring water trickle over it for over 25 years leaving calcium rich deposits enhancing the power of water. Over 300 luxuriously redesigned guestrooms feature warm wood tones and granite countertops with chaise lounges inviting you to unwind. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer views of the scenic surroundings. Generous sized bathrooms and floor plans are super inviting. Austin has so many wonderful hotel options, but if you are looking for a resort for a quick summer escape with the family that has something for everyone, Barton Creek is the only choice. The family-friendly resort will keep everyone happy.

nother month and another smartphone (or ten) hit the market. But the HTC One S from T-Mobile stands out for several reasons. The most striking of which is its compact form factor: Thin is in. At just 7.95mm thin with its aluminum, unibody design, this is T-Mobile’s thinnest smartphone. It packs Beats by Dre technology which gives a rich authentic sound when using headphones. Preloaded apps like T-Mobile TV, Beats Audio and HTC Movie Editor makes this a true multimedia device. This is one of the first smartphones I have used with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) – a great update to my already-favorite Android OS. The device takes advantage of T-Mobile’s 4G network speeds which makes functions like video-conferencing simple and seamless. www.t-mobile.com/one $199 after $50 mail-in rebate

H

AVING BEEN ON THE SCENE FOR ALMOST TEN YEARS, THE INDEPENDENTLY OWNED AND OPERATED UPTOWN SUSHI KNOWS THE SECRET TO LONGEVITY IN OUR FICKLE FOOD SCENE: CONSISTENCY. WITH 99 YEARS COMBINED OF CHEF EXPERIENCE THEY HAVE FUSED CLASSICAL JAPANESE TRAINING WITH THEIR OWN DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS TO CREATE AN ECLECTIC, UNIQUE AND TIMELESS MENU.

If there is one thing we don’t lack here it’s a shortage in dining options. And sushi is no exception. Even if this is Texas. With all the choices, one wonders how it’s possible to stand out. With sushi it comes down to pricing, quality, creativity, authenticity and, in a city this large, proximity. The last thing you want to do is shell out your hard-earned cash on mediocre freshness, especially with a cuisine that is essentially raw. Over the years and after many visits, Uptown has never disappointed. I’ve never left thinking I didn’t get exactly what was advertised. I’ve never left questioning the quality either. The only thing I’ve left with is delight and wonder for how they consistently satisfy over the years. This hometown favorite has stepped up their game with some new menu items that take their quality factor to another level. For one, they serve only the highest quality grade 1+ fresh fish. A variety of fresh fish (never frozen) is delivered at least once daily from all over the world. Our tasting started with an assortment of sashimi (fresh raw fish

meat sliced thin); nigiri (a small clump of rice with a slice of fish on top) and rolls were presented throughout the night, displaying their expertise in zushi fusion cuisine. A 30-year-aged soy sauce was brought out to accompany our sushi. Like most aged delicacies this provides a more robust and flavorful touch where a little goes a long way. They are the only place in the city that offers tamari – this fine soy sauce is aged like a fine Scotch, so remember to ask for it. In addition, the chefs prepare all of their sauces and oils in house. If flavor and freshness are what you are after, minus the rice factor, their sashimi in their cold appetizers is a must. Yellow Pon with slices of hamachi, thinly sliced jalapenos, tobiko and yuzu citrus is a mild, clean bite – a crunch of fresh jalapeno plus the tender hamachi and the tang of citrus. A more typical Japanese flavor is experienced in the Japanese Crudo. Red Snapper sashimi is dressed with thinly sliced herbs (in our case, cilantro) drizzled with negi oil and ponzu sauce. For a taste of the fusion mentioned

above, the Truffle Tuna is a must. Maguro sashimi is served drizzled with white truffle oil with a side of mixed thin slices of red onion and green onion plus crispy garlic chips. A bite with a bit of the mix and crispy garlic chip with the Maguro in a subtle hint of truffle is luxurious. My only problem was I had to share this with my husband. Once the cold part of our meal was done, we had a platter of signature rolls and nigiri to add to our delight. The signature rolls and nigiri are more than your typical roll. It’s their fusion creations. The rice is essential in these pieces. Executive chef/owner Donald Chang has spent over 20 years perfecting the sushi rice secret recipe, which includes using only filtered water. If you’re the adventurous type the freshwater eel nigiri is a must. Topped with a little block of their in-house mango cheesecake, it’s a savory, sweet combo unlike anything else. They are pioneers of topped sushi – a single bite of nigiri sushi delicately topped with complimenting flavors and contrasting textures to fancy even the most refined palate.

This hometown 5 favorite has stepped up their game with some new menu items that take their quality factor to another level. For one, they serve only the highest quality grade 1+ fresh fish.

A new favorite of mine is the seared escolar. This nigiri with anago sauce, olive oil, sesame seed and a garlic chip highlights the seared, smoky flavor of the escolar beautifully. A surprise ingredient wowed us with the snow crab nigiri. To our delight, snow crab is topped with a ceviche mix and drizzled with a sauce that included Cholula hot sauce (our favorite). It gives the combo mild spice and works really well with nigiri. Apparently they whip up the sauce differently each time but luckily for us, it was Cholula. If you need a texture change, order their wildly popular Butter Roll. With snow crab, avocado, butter and masago wrapped in tempura topped with a jalapeno purée, it’s obvious where the moniker came from. Even with the tempura crunch on the inside and the mild bite of the jalapeno purée, the contents inside melt like butter in your mouth. Each dish consistently pleased in quality. Their fusions are creatively paired to add layers of flavor not too complex to explain or understand. With their exceptional quality, attentive service, same glowing ambiance, Uptown Sushi proves its power is in the details. Consistent details.

H-TOWN STREATS http://twitter.com/#!/htownstreats www.facebook.com/Htownstreats CUISINE SOUL SATISFYING, GLOBALLY INSPIRED STREET FOOD If you are a follower of food trucks, which you have to be in order to find their location, then you probably knew that this beast of a truck was picked for the Dos XX FEAST OF THE BRAVE PROMOTION LAST MONTH. THEY WENT AROUND Alligator Taco THE CITY OFFERING FREE TACOS TO CROWN THE BRAVEST CITY IN THE COUNTRY. The brave part comes in the nature of the tacos being served. They didn’t have the task of cooking regular old tacos that were super spicy (scary). Oh no, they had to cook – make edible – tacos with fillings like alligator, shark, crickets, ostrich and mystery meat (TERRIFYING). And then find brave souls (full circle, people) who would eat these tacos. It was just our luck they parked right outside our offices. After some trepidation and a walkthrough from fellow editor Pixie on what some of these resemble in taste, I went for it. “I’ll take one shark taco and one alligator.” I was still scared. My number came up and it was time … to be brave. After one bite of my shark taco, like fish, I was pleasantly surprised. They grilled the shark to perfection and layered avocado crema and mango for a tender, creamy treat. This would be perfect for a normal fish taco. The alligator taco was fried alligator with a chipotle sauce, shredded lettuce, pico de gallo and sour cream. Another perfect combo with crunchy alligator meat. Now, you won’t find these tacos being served out of this truck anymore since it was only a limited promotion. My point is, though, if they can make shark and alligator that delicious, their normal fare must be mind-blowing! I will find you, HTown StrEATS. I see a Shorty Mac in my future!

DRIVING ON SHEPHERD, THIS PLACE IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MISS. IF YOU SEE THIS BRIGHTLY MULTICOLORED HOUSE TO YOUR RIGHT, YOU HAVE ARRIVED AT THE RIGHT PLACE. The visual stimulation doesn’t stop there. Once inside, raw wood, bright colors, Mexican references (luchadores), practical wares and creative esthetics make for an atmosphere that is only missing sand and the roar of ocean waves out back. For lunch we dined on a medley of tacos, ceviches, tiradito and shrimp cocktail and topped it off with a Mexican classic – churros! Everything is served once it’s prepared. There’s no science to it other than sharing the deliciousness with those you’re with. The Taco Camaron served in a corn tortilla with tamarind and chipotle dressing with pickled onion and a cabbage mix is sure to please with its crunchy, tangy combo. If freshness is on your mind, it gets no more authentic than their Ceviche de Huachinago (red snapper) in a Seville orange dressing and, true to Aquiles’ style, a mystery flavor. Combine that with their salmon and white fish tiradito with its fine slices and their Acapulco Golden Cocktail de Camaron made classic style with avocado and lime, and you’ll be in a beach state of mind. And don’t you dare skip dessert! Their churros, Mexico’s famous dessert, are 100% authentic. Served with a side of homemade chocolate and honey-herbs liquor in a mini-cup for dipping, it’s the ideal sweet but savory nightcap. Ceviche

AFTER THE MUCH TALKED ABOUT WEEK CLOSURE TO PERFECT THEIR SPRING MENU (A PRACTICE THEY WILL DO QUARTERLY), TRINITI IS BACK TO PROVE THAT NOTHING HAS CHANGED EXCEPT FOR THE MENU. The execution of each dish, the presentation and the service are still unrivaled. Once seated in a spacious booth we perused their new menu along with the addition of a lunch prix fixe menu at only $22 for three courses. The selections on this prix fixe change weekly. With my mother enticed by the greens and palm salad not offered on that menu, we went rogue. We tried said salad, the tuna poke for starters and the salmon entrée and chicken salad toast, respectively, topped off with their cheesecake for dessert. The greens and palm salad with long beans, hearts of palm, cucumber, pine nut sprinkles and chicks of goat cheese is crisp, clean and refreshing for the weather. The tuna poke with tuna and tomato diced together and layered atop avocado with crispy onions on top has an Asian influence for a completely different fresh flavor profile. When you serve tuna like this, it has to be good quality or you will taste it. The salmon entrée, a filling and regular sized portion, is served medium rare with a chickpea cake and carrot top nage. A simple pairing compared to the layered chicken salad. This is not your normal chicken salad, with pickled beets, tarragon and pistachio. Its light dressing paired with a side of greens Greens and Palms Salad and deviled eggs makes for complex delight, a refreshing update to the standard. You’d be mad to miss out on their desserts. They create true art from this course. Our deconstructed cheesecake: Arranged beautifully on the plate are spheres of cheesecake, dots of strawberry gel, strawberry foam, a scoop of strawberry sorbet and almond shortbread rounds. Together they create the cheesecake experience. Don’t wait for the next quarter to indulge the senses in the pleasure of Triniti.

PEOPLE OFTEN ASSUME THAT A THIN PERSON IS HEALTHY AND A LARGER PERSON MUST NOT BE. IN SOME CASES, THAT MAY BE TRUE, BUT, ALL-IN-ALL, HEALTH OR LACK OF IS NOT DETERMINED BY THE SIZE OF A PERSON. ASIDE FROM MEDICAL EXAMS, A HEALTHY PERSON IS TYPICALLY SOMEONE WHO HAS ENERGY, A STABLE MOOD AND SLEEPS WELL. EATING WELL-BALANCED MEALS AND SNACKS HOWEVER CAN PLAY A HUGE ROLE IN YOUR OVERALL WELL-BEING.

In order to pick your foods, you must understand what it is you are looking for. Yes, there are many different methods of rationalizing your carbohydrates to fats to proteins, and yes, they are effective. However, counting numbers, reading labels and measuring weight is not only time-consuming, but also takes the joy out of eating. In my experience, keeping it simple is the best long-term way to stay well. Eating multiple times a day is not only important for stabilizing your metabolism, but it also keeps those cravings under control. If I wait to eat until I am hungry, I wind up eating faster, and making decisions based on what looks good rather than what will make me feel well. By eating in between meals (every 3 hours or so) I keep my energy up, my mood stable and my figure in line. Now that we know when to eat, its time to figure out what to eat! There are countless snack options to choose from. One factor to keep in mind: Be sure the snack includes a little protein. A snack should also be easy and fast. Below I have listed a few healthy snack ideas: TURKEY ROLL-UPS • Lay out 4 slices of turkey. • Squeeze a line of mustard down the middle of each slice. • Add a thin slice of cheese on top. • Roll up the turkey like a taquito. OATMEAL MUFFINS • Preheat oven to 350°. – Combine:

– 1 mashed banana – 12 Splenda® packets (or sweetener of choice) – 3 egg whites – 2 teaspoons vanilla extract – ½ cup unsweetened applesauce – 1 cup unsweetened almond milk – 2 cups fast cooking oats – 1½ teaspoons baking powder – 2 teaspoons cinnamon – Fill 10 well-greased (PAM®) muffin cups. – Bake for 12-14 minutes. (I like to add half a cup of plain Greek yogurt for a more complete snack.) EGG WHITE WRAPS • Beat 3 egg whites and 2 tablespoons of fat-free milk. • Pour mixture into well-greased (PAM®) pan. • Add seasoned salt for taste. • When eggs are almost done, divide into two. • Place tortillas (with eggs inside) back onto skillet. • Add a bit of low-fat cheddar cheese. • Fold into two breakfast/snack tacos. (I like to add salsa for a little extra flair.) These are just a few of the countless snack options there are to choose from. If I am in a hurry and do not have time to prepare a snack, I always keep some pre-measured bags of Kashi® cereal to add to some low-fat cottage cheese or Greek yogurt. I also like the GNU® Foods Flavor and Fiber bars.

The weather could not stop this party from being the hottest event in Houston. A-listers gathered at the new rooftop bar, The Parque at Mr. Peeples, to celebrate The US Men’s Clay Courts Championship and players hosted by 002houston magazine and Camden Wealth Advisors. The downtown skyline created the perfect backdrop as guests danced the night away to beats provided by DJ Sun, snacked on Lamb Pops from 5115 Restaurant & Lounge, bites by BlackFinn American Grille and an amazing breakfast buffet from Luby’s. With Patron Tequila infused popsicles, Ultimat Vodka cocktails, IKAL and Duchman wines, and ice-cold Coronas cooling off guests, a 2012 Ferrari FF on display courtesy of Black & Gold Experience heated up the night. This event was in sensory overdrive and took Houston’s nightlife to new heights.

When the mercury starts to rise, the itch to get out and enjoy the weather and all the fun things Houston has to offer starts to be undeniable. Summer to some means taking in sporting events like Astros games or some Dynamos soccer action – meaning we need great dining options near the stadiums to gather before and after the games. OR FOR THE TRENDY DINER, HOUSTON’S GREAT FOOD TRUCKS ARE A HANDY OPTION TO GRAB A SNACK! Bea Here Now ♥ By Beatrice Allen

IT’S SUMMER!

I WISH I GOT A SUMMER BREAK. THAT FEELING IS ABSOLUTELY CONTAGIOUS. THE “I HAVE NO RESPONSIBILITIES EXCEPT FOR BEING BY THE POOL” FEELING, “LET’S TAKE A TRIP” FEELING, “I GET TO SLEEP IN” FEELING – I’M FEELING ALL OF THOSE. EXCEPT, I DON’T GET TO ACTUALLY ACT ON THEM (EXCEPT FOR THE OCCASIONAL SLEEP IN, THANK YOU, JEFE). AND APPARENTLY I ALSO FEEL THE NEED TO INDULGE IN EATING WHATEVER I WANT, THROWING CAUTION TO THE WIND SINCE I’M SWEATING SO MUCH (THANK YOU, HEAT) IT’S LIKE I’M WORKING OUT ALL DAY, RIGHT?! IT’S HOT, IT’S SUMMER, A TREAT EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE IS DESERVED. LIKE RECONNECTING WITH MY INNER CHILD. AND IN THAT RECONNECTION I FOUND AN AMAZING CARPACCIO, A CHANGE OF SCENERY FOR SPORTS, A “HEALTHY” BURGER AND AS THE COWS SAY, I “ATE MOR CHIKIN.”

UNDER THE SEA! REEF 2600 Travis @ McGowen 713.526.8282 reefhouston.com My only visit was when they first opened 5 years ago. Looking back and even now, with the amount of places that sprout up, this behavior is a pattern with no real intent. I recall the experience being good so that wasn’t it. Regardless, I’m excited to have made it back. I can’t shake the delicious memory of their snapper carpaccio with grapefruit agra dolce, sprinkles of mint served with garlic bruschetta that appeared to have a pesto spread of some sort. It’s sweet, fresh, tangy and savory on one plate. The freshness of this dish is ideal for the summer.

TIMES, THEY’RE A-CHANGING 360 SPORTS LOUNGE 4601 Washington Ave. 713.677.0398 www.360sportslounge.com After devouring my burger from next door and being that it was NBA playoff time, convincing my husband to go next door for a nightcap was easy. Offering TVs at every angle on the walls like wallpaper (with some even facing the outside patio), liquor, wine, beer and food, this sports lounge is the most grownup, normal smelling sport anything I’ve ever been in. A far cry from my collegiate, only beer serving, fried food, questionable scent sports bar days. Not that I don’t still frequent such establishments, it’s just good to know we have options.

bun with lettuce blend, tomato, red onion, Tilamook® cheddar (yeah, I couldn’t say no to the cheese but I thought about it) and chipotle aioli plus ketchup for my condiments. It was flavorful to the last bite. And I didn’t have a trail of grease dripping down my arm – instead it was a cheese, ketchup, aioli mix. Totally worth it! SAVE A COW, EAT A CHIKIN! CHICK-FIL-A® @ Sawyer Heights- 2222 Shearn St. 713.862.4311 www.cfahouston.com Speaking of diets, clearly that was not even a blip on my radar when I made this decision. But I did make myself feel a little better about it by ordering a diet lemonade (works every time) and walking to this new location from our office which just happens to be conveniently (convenient for my legs, not for my diet) located within walking distance. I went with the Chick-fil-A 8-nugget combo. And I can’t forget their waffle fries. Their super-cool Heinz® ketchup packages give you the option to dip or spread! Genius! Guilt? What guilt? I’m walking back to work in 90 degree weather…

CUSTOM BUILT BEA BURGER THE COUNTER 4601 Washington Ave. 713.966.6123 www.thecounterburger.com When I crave a burger minus the guilt, this is my goto. Mind you this is not when I’m craving a-greasy-ittastes-like-butter burger but an I-need-to-cheat-onmy-diet-without-going-back-to-square-one burger moment. I got a 1/3lb vegan patty on a multigrain

Interview by Lance Scott Walker Photography by Anthony Rathbun

JOHNNY FALSTAFF

L

ocal boy Johnny Falstaff is a local boy done good. He plays country music the way he wants, and over the past few years, he’s gotten the opportunity to do that overseas. Plus, just so that those good looks aren’t confined to the stage, he’s had a few turns in front of the camera as well, most notably in the film “Honky Tonk Blood,” with local rockers John Evans and Hank Schyma (of the Southern Backtones, with whom he co-wrote the film). Catching up with Johnny while on tour in Europe after a couple of good German beers on his end, we had this exchange.

So you’ve made several trips to play in Europe now. How is this one going? The tour is going great... I am using some German players on this tour, and we are having a ball! We are based out of Dresden (east Germany) and the city is awesome ... like Disneyland awesome. Their rehearsal complex is just like ours back home – crowded with all kinds of music, filthy, reeking like stale beer and cigarettes, simply perfect. There is a Christian rock band that sounds like death metal that practices next door. Kind of ironic that our hillbilly twang is the stuff of Satan. We just got back from Austria and Switzerland ... had a blast, then caught a train up to northeast Germany to a town called Braunschweig to play a big show with my amigos, The Twang ... sold out, rocking ... the kind of show that reminds you of why the hell you play music in the first place!

What is it about Texas honky tonk that keeps them bringing you back? What do you think they respond to? I think it is musical integrity that keeps them bringing me back. While I totally dig Buck Owens, Johnny Burnett, George Jones, etc. ... I can’t be clone or a rip-off. When I write a song or choose to cover one of these guys, it comes out sounding like ... me. You recorded a live album in Germany – does it do well there? The live record was a ton of fun. We recorded it in a small club in Cologne. Jack Daniels was flowing freely, so we were pretty wound up and the crowd was rocking right there with us. In a drunken instant, I decided to practice my German between songs ... not my proudest moment, but the crowd got a good laugh. So, yeah, the record is doing quite well over here.

Any plans to make another film? What will the direction be? As a matter of fact, Hank Schyma and I are working on a new film now! While I can’t let the cat completely out of the bag, I will say this ... it will be a western/horror flick. It was a super-cool experience to film “Honky Tonk Blood,” and I think the new movie will be over the top. We have already shot some great stuff in Arizona and west Texas, and we plan to go full bore when I get back after this tour. Anything else you’re working on? New album? I am indeed working on a new record. This one will be a bit off the beaten path, a concept type of record. The title is Death Western and will be full of wonderful songs about death and killing. Mom will not be pleased. A couple of songs will make it to the new movie soundtrack. We plan to wrap it up by the end of summer. www.reverbnation.com/johnnyfalstaff

CORRECTION: On last month’s Recording page, we ran an interview wtih SpringBoardSouth founder Barry Coffing along with a photo of rocker Johnny Falstaff. Since Falstaff’s interview actually runs this month, a shot of him accompanies Recording, and Barry’s photo is seen here. Apologies for the mixup!

WE’RE TALKING LIKE PROHIBITION ERA OLD SCHOOL. WORTH MENTIONING THIS PLACE ISN’T ‘ANIMAL HOUSE’ ANYMORE EITHER. SO WHAT IS IT? A COUPLE OF SEASONED HOUSTON BAR SCENE VETS HAVE HIT THE REWIND BUTTON TO BRING A NEW CONCEPT TO THE BUILDING THAT’S SURE TO TURN SOME HEADS WITH STYLES FROM YESTERYEAR. THE EIGHTEENTH COCKTAIL BAR (2511 BISSONNET ST.) IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS.

“Open” does not mean you will get in. First off, you have to know the “password,” see. That’s right – enter through the back door with a “password.” We are going full speakeasy theme here at Eighteenth Bar. And did they do. it. right. Boardwalk Empire right. I was absolutely floored (pun intended – look down when you get inside) with the remodel. Planks of raw reclaimed wood, period perfect furniture, a wall of antique mirrors, cement and brick all over – you might as well be in Atlantic City during prohibition drinking with Nucky after a raid on some bootleggers’ stash. Eighteenth Bar has really nailed the speakeasy scene with the rebuild. That does not mean they have not thought of everything, and I mean everything, that goes into a true quality bar. You know how when wood patios age, the boards start to warp, growing the gaps between them? Look down at the patios when you go outside. Notice the filled-in gaps. Who does that?? Guys who care, that’s who. Speaking of those patios, they are one way Eighteenth Bar does, for a moment, break from the speakeasy vibe. One sits on the front side facing Bissonnet and a nice and secluded second option is tastefully situated off the back. These, just like everything else here, are done just right. Gently draping shade covers, plenty of seating, areas glowing by candlelight – ladies and gents, this is an atmosphere well done!

No speakeasy exists simply because it looks cool. It exists because of the drinks! The resident mixologists, they know their stuff and are ready to go full bar scientist on us. A seasonal custom menu of cocktails will be served in delicate barware, looking just like it would have been in the years of yore. Want an old standard mixed drink, well you might get those served in coffee cups, also like the old prohibition days – you know, a cover in case the authorities stop by for a little raid. Beer (local and craft drafts, might even have some 8th Wonder Brewery on tap soon!) and wine are of course purveyed as well, as no thirst shall remain unquenched here. Drink well and drink what you want, settle in, relax and enjoy. So, what’s the password? I don’t know, and honestly it’s just for thematic consistency anyway, so don’t be worried being denied entry. This place isn’t huge in size, but soon we feel it’s going to be huge in its reputation. Eighteenth Bar is about quality not quantity, and the owners want this to be the place for you to bring your out-of-town friends, a place to show off the best of Houston. We are talking prime time! What does that mean for you? It means if you get in (which you should, shouldn’t you?) things are good, dare I say great. If you happen to be stuck in line, well, I can’t see many reasons why those who are inside will want to leave before closing so you might be stuck spending your evening in some blind pig. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
