risp, delicious fall is so close I can taste it! I can’t get enough of all the “f’s” in this issue! Fun, fashion, food, CARLA VALENCIA friends – did I mention fashDE MARTINEZ + PASCUAL ion? You’ll notice that’s the recurring theme here. From our coverage of New York Fashion Week last month to a few local style icons in our book that share this season’s inspired look starting on page 42. Plus a few local experts making it big in their chosen fields. There’s the regular fuel to feed your stomach from new restaurants and our monthly food truck coverage to Beatrice Allen’s unpretentious coverage of the local foodie scene. We hope to make our ways into your heart through your very grumbling bellies. Also support the local nonprofit community and learn about LIFE on page 20. For friends and fun, check out the loads of post-event coverage scattered throughout the magazine as well as the special section called “The Scene.” Want to get invited to our events or exclusive events? Make sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest where our social media maven, Jordan Campbell, is constantly giving away prizes, invites and more! One of the things that makes 002houston magazine so special is that we produce everything inhouse. Meaning the cover shoot was shot on location at Spring Street Studios in sweltering Houston heat while most of the people who made it happen are all local talent. From veteran Page 713. model Amara Risa, who has graced our cover more than once in the last 13+ years, to our wildly talented photographer Gabriella Nissen, who leads a magical life in the Heights area. The amazing fall look you see was actually one of two that stylist Marzi Fatemizadeh conjured up with her mad skills. Hair and makeup were done by Edward Sanchez with whom we’ve been working since we were babies it feels like! And now he’s grown up and is set to open the Vanity Lounge in West Ave. And you can read about Urban Izzy in this month’s Retail Wrap. Plus our whole staff gets involved in the concept, execution and polishing of each cover and our shoots. 6. october 12 | www.002mag.com

1. THE MENIL COLLECTION www.menil.org Claes Oldenburg: Strange Eggs, on view thru February 3, 2013. The Strange Eggs are a remarkable group of collages by American artist Claes Oldenburg (b. 1929). Completed over the course of two years after he moved to New York City from Chicago in 1956, they constitute some of the artist’s earliest known works and represent a pivotal moment of experimentation by Oldenburg. 2. HOUSTON CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHY www.hcponline.org In Appropriation, on view thru October 28, presents a selection of contemporary photographers who directly instigate strikingly new photographic work through the appropriation of preexisting imagery – whether it be found, historical, canonical, personal, archival or otherwise. “Appropriation” has been an important conceptual strategy within the visual arts for nearly a century. But in the case of the artists presented here, this act is not purely a matter of taking an image from one context and placing it within another. Instead, these photographers are carefully examining, incorporating and then transforming such pictures in an effective, engaging and incredibly original manner. 3. THE ROTHKO CHAPEL www.rothkochapel.org

SIRUN GUAN O
HANNAH BACOL BUSCH GALLERY
UT WITH THE NEW; IN WITH THE OLD. CASE IN POINT: HANNAH BACOL BUSCH IS BRINGING BACK GONGBI, AN ANCIENT CHINESE PAINTING TECHNIQUE. “IT ORIGINATED IN THE CHINESE CULTURE AND ONLY THE MOST AFFLUENT PEOPLE COULD AFFORD TO COMMISSION GONGBI ARTISTS,” EXPLAINS BACOL BUSCH. “IT’S A TYPE OF PAINTING THAT IS VERY METICULOUS.” Shanghai-born Sirun Guan will be demonstrating her watercolor technique October 27 at Hannah Bacol Busch Gallery during an opening reception for her solo exhibit. “We have four huge panels and she will do a section. She is hoping to complete them by next year for another show. The public will be invited to watch when she completes it,” says Bacol Busch.
The name Gongbi is from the Chinese gong chin meaning “tidy.” The technique uses highly detailed brushstrokes that delimit details very precisely and usually depicts figural or narrative subjects. It is usually highly coloured. Guan’s mission is to give the age-old technique a modern twist. “There’s a huge movement in China right now of modernizing Gongbi,” reveals Bacol Busch. “But I think Siran Guan is the only artist in Texas who paints in this style,” she adds.
The paintings on view this month are intricate and richly hued. “It takes her two to three months to do one painting,” says Bacol Busch. Preferring rice paper to canvas, Guan is an artist in residence who also teaches at the gallery. She is part of a roster of three artists who offer classes for both children and adults. “This is under the umbrella of services to the community. I want to do films, talks and bring artists from other countries and inspire art enthusiasts,” says Bacol Busch. Originally located on Shepherd Ave. in River Oaks, Hannah Bacol Busch Gallery is grooving on its temporary digs in Bellaire. “I’ve realized, being out here, that location is everything!” says Bacol Busch. She is working on a future site in the Museum District. “That’s an ideal location if I want to be internationally recognized,” she says, “but I’d like to keep the classes here because this is a great space and Bellaire is really highly acknowledged for its schools. Bellaire High is an excellent school. My husband went there and then went to Harvard!” she adds about her psychologist husband, who is sharing his roomy office building with the gallery.
Sirun Guan graduated from Tongji University in China. Her mentors included acclaimed Chinese painters/professors Zhan Hongchang and Cheng Xi. She came to the United States in 2007 to continue exploring the world of art while also working as an urban designer. She trained with American watercolorists and her paintings were selected in multiple juried art shows, including American Watercolor Bacol Busch is also working on a brand new gallery structure in the Museum District, Society, International Exhibition and Watercolor Art Society of which she hopes to complete by end of 2013. She is especially SIRUN GUAN SHOW PREVIEW Houston International Art Competition. Her original paintings are enthusiastic as she describes the shows she plans on having there. ART FILMS ARE GOOD FOR THE SOUL…TAKE A FRIEND TO ONE. BIRTHDAYS AND BICYCLES
Southwest Alternate Media Project (www.swamp.org) celebrated its quarter-century recently and 14 Pews (www.14pews.org) is now two. Happy Birthday, y’all! 14 Pews is celebrating on 10/26 from 6-9pm with a “Birthday Bash and Membership Drive” that will feature delicious refreshments, a silent auction, Puppet Pizzazz and much more. My hubcap-based art (pictured) called “Mod Mandalas: The Chakra Series” will open with a party on 10/4 from 7-9pm and will be up until 11/18. Screenings throughout the month include The Kid with a Bike (10/1, 7pm; 10/5, 7pm; 10/7, 4pm); a tribute to Chris Marker that’s a double feature of La Jetee and Sans Soleil (10/7, 6pm; 10/8, 7pm; 10/11, 7pm); and the dance film, Wanderland (10/12, 7pm; 10/13, 7pm; 10/19, 7pm; 10/20, 7pm). · Two Halloween-ish events round out October: a “Zombie Party” on 10/27 from 7-10pm (complete with a Zombie Fashion Show!) and a screening of Roger Corman’s A Bucket of Blood on Halloween night at 7pm. · Studio Movie Grill City Centre (www.studiomoviegrill.com) has several special screenings this month: Beatles, Magical Mystery Tour (10/2 and 10/4, 7:30pm); Lesson Before Love (10/2-10/4, 7:30pm); Bill W. Documentary (10/4, 7pm); and Girls Night Out: Pretty in Pink (10/10, 7:30pm).
SING-A-LONGS AND SUSHI FUN Miller Outdoor Theatre (www.milleroutdoortheatre.com) is still throwing films onto the big screen and this month they feature one of my personal fave events: a “Sound of Music Sing-a-Long” on 10/20 at 6:30pm – audience participation is encouraged, even if you’re totally off-key. And you can celebrate Halloween outdoors with their screening of the 1960 horror classic, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, at 8pm. · Catch a young Gérard Depardieu (pictured) this month at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s (www.mfah.org) “Blier/Depardieu” program that’s an homage to the French duo of Bertrand Blier who often employed popular French actor Depardieu in his films. Onscreen will be Going Places (Les valseuses, 10/26, 7pm); Get Out Your Handkerchiefs (Préparez vos mouchoirs, 10/27, 7pm); and Too Beautiful for You (Trop belle pour toi, 10/28 at 5pm). The Museum is excellent at community partnering – they’ve teamed up with the Sushi Club of Houston (www.houston-sushi.com) to present Sushi: The Global Catch, a revealing documentary that celebrates sushi while considering the impact of its worldwide consumption on the population of our seas. · Another MFAH partnership is with the Texas Independent Film Network (TIFN, www.austinfilm.org/tifn), a statewide coalition of film societies, universities and independent theaters united for the purpose of screening Texas independent film; all TIFN programs are cosponsored by the Southwest Alternate Media Project (SWAMP) and the Houston Film Critics Society. This conglomerate is bringing the story of one man’s quest for touching the moon, Man on a Mission: Richard Garriott’s Road to the Stars (10/30, 7pm).
“OUR IMAGE FILM AND ARTS FEST” and more The 2012 Our Image Film and Arts Festival (ourimagefest.com) will celebrate their third year of honoring some of the best black independent film makers, artists and local musicians. The festival returns to Rice Cinema (ricecinema.rice.edu/) on 10/19, 6pm, and 10/20, 3:30pm. Films included will be Katrina’s Son, the harrowing tale of the life of a little boy in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; Wolf, the story of a family’s journey of sexual abuse of their son; and An Oversimplification of Her Beauty, a story of love between the director and a young woman. Sundance Houston (www.sundancecinemas.com) has a great line-up on their “Screening Room” calendar: How to Survive a Plague (10/5-10/11); The Revisionaries (10/12-10/18); and something I’m super excited about, Decoding Deepak (10/19-10/25). · The River Oaks (www.landmarktheatres.com) has several midnighters lined up: Casablanca (10/5-6); I Drink Your Blood (10/12); The Room (10/19); and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (10/26-27). Their regular features this month are The Perks of Being a Wallflower (9/28); Little White Lies (10/5); The Other Dream Team (10/12, pictured); and The Paperboy (10/19). Rock on, October!

LIFE
(LOCAL INFANT FORMULA FOR EMERGENCIES) HOUSTON
by Susan M. Bynam
C
ELEBRATING 23 YEARS OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF INFANTS AND THEIR FAMILIES IN HOUSTON
nity. One year ago, LIFE/Houston welcomed newcomer Neystal Howard-Jones as its new executive director. The proud Howard University alum with over 7 years of nonprofit experience (having served as executive director for Brighter Tomorrows, a domestic violence agency in Dallas), deems her role both vital to LIFE/Houston’s longevity and as a gift that is worth treasuring for – yes, you guessed it, Houston – a lifetime!
For those who have ready access to staple foods, proper nutrition is often taken for granted. Yet, for those who lack access for whatever reason, especially children, inadequate nutrition during early childhood can impede brain development and have lasting effects on a child’s ability to learn. Those who have passion for life itself recognize the benefits of maintaining a zealous, long-lasting one.
Per Howard-Jones, “Prior to my start at LIFE/Houston, I enjoyed a nonprofit career for over 7 years, but longed for a role emphasizing children. Being an expectant mother at the time of my transition here and assuming a role which entailed an opportunity to see children all day while making a difference in the development of children was not only a perfect fit for me and LIFE/Houston, but self-gratifying in light of my circumstances of becoming a new mother. LIFE/Houston is often viewed as one of Houston’s best-kept secrets – for our presence and services are still relatively foreign to many.
One former Houstonian, Marion Knight, clearly exhibited such passion.

iPhone®5 All about this new revolutionary new product from Apple Inc.® • 4-inch Retina display • LTE connectivity • A6 chip • iOS 6 The facts about the new iPhone 5 compared to previous iPhones It’s faster, using the Apple A6 chip. Thinner – 1.8mm, and lighter – 112 grams. 4-inch Retina display. Full HD iSight® camera (better for FaceTime®), 3 microphones plus photo taking abilities and finally, LTE, the fastest broadband connection out there. Why should you get it? Personally I can get it at the reduced price with a 2-year contract, so for me it’s a no-brainer. But to answer the question: You should get it if you want to have upgraded and improved hardware. Plus, everything will be faster! Taking photos, talking to Siri®, playing games, browsing the web, even posting photos on FB® and Instagram® will be a snap. Where is the best place to get the iPhone 5? My recommendation is to visit your favorite Apple Retail Store (no, I don’t work there anymore, nor do I get kickbacks). There the Mac® Specialist will be able to help you with the knowledge only an Apple employee has.
Now for my monthly Tips for the iPhone, iPad® or any iOS 6 device. Inserting bold, italics or underline (you can only do this in Mail) by selecting the word you just typed, then tap on the arrow next to “Paste” and there you go – a menu bar of options. *Note - You can also insert Photo or Video.
iCloud® to back up your iPhone, iPad, etc. Go to Settings/iCloud, scroll down and select Storage and Backup. Remember you get 5 GB of free iCloud storage; if you have more data on your iOS you will need to purchase more space. Personally I prefer to use my Mac at home to do a full backup every week with iTunes®, which is best for me because it’s a faster process and I feel more secure having my personal backup at home.
BABIES ARE ADORABLE, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE SLEEPING! BUT, DID YOU KNOW THAT WHILE THEY ARE PEACEFULLY SLEEPING, THEY ARE BEING BOMBARDED WITH TOXIC CHEMICALS IN THEIR VERY OWN NURSERY? It’s sad to say, but today, we are all surrounded by chemical toxins – many of which have proven negative health impacts. Parents know that there is nothing more important than the health of their child. Through local “healthy home hub” New Living or through the national nonprofit, Healthy Child Healthy World, you can get expert advice on how to help your little ones lay down their heads in the healthiest environment possible. HERE ARE OUR QUICK TIPS FOR DETOXIFYING YOUR NURSERY AND HOME: Clear the air: Filter biological and chemical particles out of your air to alleviate allergies, asthma and more. We recommend filters that use both HEPA and Activated Carbon technologies, like Austin Air. Drink (and bathe in) clean water: Houston’s water quality is some of the nation’s worst, and most bottled water isn’t much better! Filter out heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and disinfecting chemicals with a whole house or point-of-use water systems. We can recommend several different brands at different price-points! There are models that filter your bath and shower water, which can be just as harmful as drinking water! Healthy color: Use healthy, non-toxic paints and stains from The Green Painter to minimize toxic chemicals brought into your home. Painters have elevated cancer risks for a reason (40% greater than any other construction trade according to the Environmental Working Group). Healthy paint works just like traditional paint and costs about the same, and it’s so nontoxic you can paint and sleep in the room the same night!

5 TIPS FOR ACHIEVING YOUR OWN STYLE/DESIGN
1. BE CONFIDENT AND COMFORTABLE IN WHAT YOU ARE BUYING. 2. STAY TRUE TO YOUR PERSONAL STYLE. 3. DON’T DO SOMETHING BECAUSE IT’S TRENDY, DO IT BECAUSE IT’S STYLISH AND YOU LOVE IT. 4. UNDERSTAND YOUR STRENGTHS AND YOUR WEAKNESSES WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR BODY. 5. GO FOR COLORS THAT WON’T DROWN YOU OUT.
YEARS IN OPERATION Since May 12, 2012. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS BUSINESS? It has always been a dream of mine to have my own clothing store. Witnessing the major boom in the food truck community over the past few years in Houston, it seemed like an organic idea to synergize the two ideas. Having the store on wheels afforded me the unique opportunity to take my store with me wherever I wanted to go. WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER STORES? Wheels.
WHAT OR WHO INSPIRES YOU? All of the local artisans and clothiers are a big part of my inspiration. Urban Izzy has given me the rare chance to represent the work of some genuinely talented craftsmen. Words really cannot sum up my respect for these artists. Jessica Dolan of Starlet, who’s like a sister to me since the age of 3, is a huge part of this. She has been with me on this journey since day one and taught me so much of what she knows of her 10+ years in the industry. I would be remiss if I did not at least recognize the pivotal role my grandfather played in inspiring me to go forward with this endeavor. Papa (Izzy): We did it!
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITES ITEMS IN YOUR SHOP NOW? This is a tough one, but I’m always going to be partial to my lovely dresses. There are such a variety of styles to choose from. Another favorite of mine would have to be the hand-dyed tops and scarves. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS NEW THIS SEASON THAT IS GOING TO BE BIG? Mobile boutiques. Lol. In all seriousness, I’m really feeling the military lines that are being shown on the runways this fall. We’re seeing lots of golds and flirty accessories, which are always really fun to play around with.
PLACE FOR COFFEE I love Agora! So glad they rebuilt it after the fire! TRAVEL DESTINATION Austin. The city always has been one of my favorites. And the indigenous people of Jamaica are so culturally rich and full of life – the beach is really my Zen place. Dream trips: India, Bora Bora. FLOWER AND WHERE TO GET THEM Country Flowers on Fannin. I love that you don’t have to spend a fortune on orchids and lilies. WINE Malbec, Merlot (I’m not at all particular…) 34. october 12 | www.002mag.com

Fine art photographer Hunter Gorham opened the doors to his new gallery, which is perched above Paulie’s, with Paradise Found, an exhibit showcasing infinity-mounted exotic images from far-off destinations like Cuba, Mallorca and Ibiza. The art transformed the old loft into an enticing sanctuary, far removed from the bustle of Westheimer just below. David Michael OWNER, HAIR STYLIST What hair looks are you loving for fall? That’s easy – curls, loose waves, natural hair. Hair has been straight for so long, so now we’re moving back toward texture. These looks can be accomplished with rollers, curling irons or professional treatments. Are styles age-appropriate or is it more individual? There really aren’t any hard and fast rules when it comes to hair, in my opinion. I think everyone should go for an individual style that flatters them and their lifestyle. The idea that women need to go short when they go older is really outdated. Growing up, who was your role model? Before I started doing hair, I was a makeup artist. In college, someone gave me Kevyn Aucoin’s book Making Faces and it was a revelation. He was a true artist and creative genius who inspired me to

pursue a career in making women (and men) look and feel their best. Who sets trends in Houston? She doesn’t live here anymore, but I am obsessed with Solange Knowles. She does not live in her sister’s shadow at all. She’s got a fierce, fashionable look and is really making a name for herself as a DJ. In fact, she’s DJing at Diane von Furstenberg’s Manhattan store during Fashion’s Night Out. She also DJ’d the opening of the Miu Miu store in the Galleria. Plus, she’s the face of Madewell’s Fall 2012 campaign – “Mix Well. Madewell.” Which celebrity would you like to have as a client? Which local celebrity? The ultimate celebrity client would be Madonna. She’s always changing it up, so it would be incredible to work with her on her next incarnation. Locally, I’d love to work with Jaclyn Smith. She’s a great-looking Houston lady with beautiful hair
who never seems to age. And plus, she knows hair. Don’t forget she was the host of Shear Genius! What product do you use that you just love? The American Wave is a revolutionary texturizing service that creates permanent curls, beachy waves, volume and fullness that will help support fine and limp hair. Danielle Doyle Are styles age-appropriate or is it more individual? I think nowadays very few styles are considered “age appropriate.” With women taking better care of themselves and many looking 20 years younger than they are, they are easily pulling off what has been viewed as much younger styles and looking great doing so. Growing up, who was your role model? Honestly my mom was my “makeup role model.” She worked at the makeup counters

in the mall in our small town of Biloxi, Mississippi, so instead of playing with Barbie® makeup, I got to play with Elizabeth Arden and Estée Lauder™. What’s the next big trend? Deep Berry stained lips. I loved them in the Gucci show, with clean eyes. Try “Blackberry” at www.tpfcosmetics.com. What single thing could most men do to enhance their looks? Groom their eyebrows! Men never think about that feature and it’s such a simple thing to get rid of the
unibrow and clean up around the edges and on the lid above the crease. It really opens up the eye and helps men appear more youthful. What’s the most outrageous “look” you ever had yourself? In jr. high I was a skater chick and I had an asymmetrical ear-length bob (with naturally curly hair) with a tail hanging to my mid back. Very scary. Very 80’s.

Vick Adams OWNER, NAIL ARTIST | NAIL MOGUL
Growing up, who was your role model? My grandmother. She was always so put together. She was a model and actress for a local PBS station back at home.
What fall show are you watching? I am looking forward to Revenge, the new Dallas – love it!! The Housewives of Anything ... LOL.
What single thing could most men do to enhance their fashion/looks/style? Fashion – I love to see a man in a suit. Style – blazers. And I am loving the colored socks for fall and the hats. I think a great-looking hat will give your outfit a whole different look. l like Dsquared2; their look is hip and prep for man.
Favorite fall nail trends? Nail trends will be Shellac/Foil, Stiletto Nails and bling. Deep, rich colors like blues, purple and dark pinks.
Which celebrity would you like to have as a client? Which local celebrity? I would like to have Kelly Rowland as a client. I love her personality and she always looks fabulous! And locally I would like to have all the local broadcasters as clients. They are celebrities to me.

What’s the most outrageous “look” you ever had yourself? When I was younger I used to color my hair a lot. One time I tried to color it blonde and it turned out orange. What “look” would you like to resurrect? I would say the asymmetric haircut. That’s the cut that was like bob short on one side and would drop longer on the other side. I loved that haircut.

Donae Cangelosi Chramosta OWNER | THE VINTAGE CONTESSA
Are styles age-appropriate or is it more individual? Age-appropriate style is actually a humorous subject for me. A few years ago, my husband, Rob, and I went to Simon’s FNO at the Galleria and were interviewed by Todd Ramos and Rebecca Spera for Mirror Mirror. They asked what I was wearing, which happened to be a Vionnet dress I bought in London at Harvey Nichol’s huge summer sale and Hermès overthe-knee and “over the top” boots with fur that I had purchased from the Hermès sale in Paris. I felt so hip and confident. Then Todd made a comment that my style was “age-appropriate” in the interview. I was amazed at 42 (at the time); I was “age-appropriate” in the amount of skin I was showing, given the length of my skirt and the cutouts on the sleeves of the dress.

Growing up, who was your role model? My mom has always been incredibly stylish and pulled together from head to toe every day. I can’t remember ever seeing her leave the house without full makeup and personally selected coordinated handbag, shoes and jewelry for every “outfit.” My father’s father (my namesake, Donato Cangelosi) was a Sicilian-Italian immigrant, shoe cobbler who settled in Bryan-College Station. His leather craftsmanship was so respected he was honored with the task of making the first bridle for the first Reveille at Texas A & M University. This heritage of craftsmanship continued with my father’s marble and granite fabrication business, Cangelosi Co. My dad would often surprise me with a new Gucci® bag each time he’d return from traveling to
Italian marble quarries. It merely fanned the flame of a lifelong obsession of fashion and trends for me. Why vintage? How did you get into this specific area? I’ve always loved fashion. My husband has been an entrepreneur since college as a numismatist, vintage watch dealer, diamond broker and estate jeweler. Every trip we took to shows throughout the world, I would treasure hunt for vintage luxury goods. He suggested we turn my hobby and spending habits into an expansion of his estate jewelry business. What are you listening to now? I love old country: Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Jr. www.thevintagecontessa.com www.Cangelosi.com www.timespastcollections.com

Lauren Craft JEWELRY DESIGNER, LAUREN CRAFT COLLECTION
Growing up, who was your role model? Growing up my role model was none other than Gabrielle Bonheur, “Coco Chanel.” I always admired her work ethic and of course the start of her fashion career by designing hats in Paris in 1908. I also admired her long strands of pearls. She loved to mix real jewels with imitation jewels especially when she designed her famous strands of pearls. She was my fashion icon and role model growing up. Which celebrity would you like to have as a client? Well, I can already cross Charlize Theron off my list. I died when her assistant called me for a bangle. In Houston, definitely Jill Ford Schlenker. She is an absolute doll and looks stunning in my pieces. What gadget/product do you use that you just love? Definitely this portable phone charger called a mophie. My media director, Brian Tran, introduced it to me at NYFW. Lifesaving. It’s a small battery pack that charges your phone in 30 minutes. Not bulky at all. Just throw it in your purse and go. What accessory looks are you loving for fall? I’m really attracted to this dark romance thing going on right now. I’ve been inspired by dark silver, gunmetal and emeralds lately. It’s like a chic, sinister elegance. What are you listening to now? Right now I am loving the song “Crave You” by Flight Facilities featuring Giselle, “You Used to Hold Me” by Calvin Harris, Thievery Corporation, Kaskade and “Take You Higher” by Goodwill and Hook N Sling. Favorite place to hang out in town? Or when you travel? In Houston, Katsuya and Uchi for dinner, Coquette Boutique and K’ATIA is where I do all of my shopping during the day and FIT in River Oaks because that is where I train with my trainer, Hillary Hagner, 3 days a week in the morning! As far as lounging in New York, I love hanging out with friends at Soho House, Bungalow 8, Bagatelle and Boom Boom Room. www.laurencraft.com

c-la + bea take on fashion week We aren’t going to lie, Fashion Week, let alone New York City, is intimidating. It doesn’t matter how many times we’ve done it. Last month we had the pleasure of attending this circus. By circus we mean the absolute pandemonium that takes over the city. Ladies and gents decked out in their finest, most creative and rarely comfortable looks but somehow entirely appropriate for not only the shows, but picking up groceries and even fetching coffee. By no means are we experts at the art that is Fashion Week let alone NYC: we merely aim to share our humble tips with any of you daydreaming of heading to the next shows or the Big Apple. The experts are there: you’ll know who they are, trust us. Catherine Malandrino show
h
ow do two women, let alone sisters who LOVE fashion, reasonably pack for such an occasion? How on earth could we pre-plan now what we would feel like when we’re there?! Our advice? Comfort is key. Not only that, we like the saying “Act like you’ve been there.” In other words, don’t get intimidated and don’t obsess with being the center of attention. Leave that to De Petra baubles the veterans, bloggers, etc. It’s about being smart and looking effortlessly cool all at the same time. It also helped that Lorena and Cynthia, the über-talented sisters behind de petra jewels quite literally stocked us with enough jewelry for several changes throughout the day. (Stilettos all day WILL wreak havoc on your feet, but do like the natives and carry flats in your bag to walk around in.) Plus be willing to roll with whatever the day might evolve into.
Four girlfriends, four days – with the plan to eat, shop, get some fashion in and maybe catch a Broadway show. We hit the ground running… but we did it our
50. october 12 | www.002mag.com
way. Fashion Week takes place twice a year in New York at Lincoln Center. Once in February and once in September, to show the following season’s collections. We were there for the Spring 2013 shows, which of course we aren’t even thinking about right now because we are anxiously awaiting our first fall breeze.
Basic NYFw 101 (that’s New York Fashion Week).
In most cases the shows are invitation only. Although Mercedes Benz Fashion Week (www.mbfashionweek.com) is the headliner, so-to-speak, of the week, it’s not the only place to see collections. MBFW is a platform where more than 80 designers show their collections to the industry, but for example, Catherine Malandrino, Herve Léger and Ralph Lauren show in their own showrooms or spaces used specifically for shows. BUT there is a way for normal people to go to MBFW and it takes the hysteria of Lincoln Center out of the equation completely. American Express offers Platinum Cardholders By Invitation Only events – think drivers, fashion show passes – and the entire experience goes from circus to thoughtlessly seamless.

Carloe Miele Show
With Paula Abdul
Lincoln Center
You have to be ready for when the By Invitation A room with a view @ the Ritz experiences are released for sale. You can buy per Drink break show or a full-day pass (about $950) but the beauty is that the @ Cipriani’s Skybox has full service – meaning food and drinks. Mimosas while watching Oscar? Sign me up! In essence there are a limited amount of places per show in the Skybox (think 25), which overlooks the main runway area. It is enclosed, like you are in a crystal box overlooking the action – I have been on the floor and it’s hectic to say the least. experience consisted of prime seating in the luxurious, catered Skybox. We started our day with the breathtaking Carolina Herrera Show (note: Vogue’s Anna Wintour in the front row seated next to Hamish Bowles). In between shows we participated in moderated Q&A’s with industry notables and talent including designers, editors and buyers. We had an intimate conversation with Chantecaille owner, Olivia Chantecaille, as well as Paula Abdul, while we waited for the Carlos Miele show to start. Before the afternoon shows we were whisked away in SUVs to the Nicole Miller store on Madison for a private shopping experience complete with champagne and hors d’oeuvres as guests mingled with the designer and shopped. Plus we were all given $250 shopping cards! Doesn’t that sound better than the circus the shows can be?
Our By Invitation Only
It doesn’t matter how much we prepare, do our research, get recommendations – we still always hit the streets and ask ourselves, “Where do we start?” We could ramble for days about our amazing jam-packed trip, but we’ll sum it up below and let the pictures speak for themselves.
Getting there After scoring this amazing invite, we had the task of finding a dreaded flight to New York during Fashion Week no less. Enter AmEx Platinum Travel Services and within a few hours we had options. Plus a $200 travel credit good for anything related to our flights. Baggage fees, upgrade services, TV in the plane, even adult beverages on the plane are good for this credit. From organizing our hotel stay to booking our flights, we were only left with the task of doing research on where to eat, drink and play. But if you don’t have time to do that either, their concierge service can do all of this for you too.

What to Watch lthough there are plenty of shows to choose from, we saw “Bring It On.” The line of pre-teen and teenage girls was bananas leading us to quickly question our choice in shows, but not only were our seats (which by the way, again we secured through our American Express Platinum Concierge, insuring prime seating – third row), but the stunts, music, storyline, the actors, the whole thing was amazing, pleasantly surprising us.
Where to Eat Momofuku Noodle Bar (momofuku.com/new-york/noodle-bar) 163 1st Ave. Reservations are not taken and the place is small. They have a few different restaurants, but we were told to go here and order whatever the bun of the day was, the house sake and the soft serve. Blue Ribbon Sushi (www.blueribbonrestaurants.com) 119 Sullivan Street Another one with many restaurants so pay attention to which one you go to. We went late and were able to get in at about 10:30pm; luckily half of us got dropped off in front of the Sushi location while our girlfriends put us all on the waitlist at their Brasserie located a few buildings over. Life-altering sushi and a full house. We sighted one of the gals behind Dannijo Jewelry. The Dutch (www.thedutchnyc.com) 131 Sullivan Street Make a reservation (212.677.6200) if you want to get in; apparently this is the hot spot. These guys basically serve food that makes them happy. It’s American food clean and simple but delicious, with a great ambiance. Jimmy at the James Hotel (www.jameshotels.com) 27 Grand Street An über-cool rooftop bar in SoHo where we found some of the coolest locals. We turned Saturday into our Sunday Funday…or was it Sunday?
WE HIT THE GROUND RUNNING… BUT WE DID IT OUR WAY. Collichio & Sons (www.craftrestaurantsinc.com) 85 Tenth Avenue Don’t miss taking notice of the massive mural on the wall weaving the story of the artist’s family into the history momofuku shrimp bun of the Meatpacking district, where this place is located. Delicious food from start to finish, which is rare. From my creative appetizer of Hamachi served with watermelon, lime and cantaloupe sliced like carpaccio to the surprisingly light and delicate risotto with squid, shiso and zucchini blossom to quite frankly the entire dessert menu. Eataly (www.eatalyny.com) 200 5th Avenue This Italian mecca is not to be missed, especially if you are a fan of the cuisine. A hybrid supermarket with a musical chairs of restaurants, if you will, allows guests to create their own culinary wonder through fresh seafood, cheeses, pizzas and pastas, meats and so much more. Cipriani Downtown® (www.cipriani.com) 376 West Broadway The more casual version near Broome Street, a beautiful and quirky interior offers a small bar, to sip on original Bellinis, or table seating inside plus a patio. Opting for a quick, light bite, we sipped on Bellinis – the original version with Italian Prosecco and white peach juice – while indulging on buratta and tuna tartare. Bar Americain (www.baramericain.com) 152 W. 52nd St. Bobby Flay’s American Brasserie – perfect for people watching. We spotted the amazing Mary Louis Parker of Weeds, causing Carla to have atrue starstruck moment.

We all know that texting and driving do not mix but a smartphone can be valuable when used safely inside a vehicle. For example…the GPS mapping feature. But how do you use your device and keep both hands on the steering wheel? The GoSmart Clip is one simple way to free your hands and keep your smartphone handy for voice-activated calls or turn-by-turn directions. The gadget securely fastens to the steering wheel of a car – or a golf or shopping cart – so the driver no longer has to reach across to look for his phone or fish it from the floor after a sudden stop. Your smartphone is held in place with two J-shaped hooks which lock with an easy-release mechanism. No tools are required for installation as an elastic strap wraps firmly around the steering wheel to hold it in place. Keep your eyes on the road and your smartphone on the steering wheel. $25.95
Guarded ID Anti-Keylogging Software ®
Protecting your computer data is very important. But hackers are getting sneakier with programs like a keylogger – a piece of malicious software which records every keystroke you make on a keyboard. They can be installed without your knowledge or consent when you visit a website or install a program. GuardedID is a software program that protects you by encrypting your keystrokes when you bank, shop and email online. Once you install this program all of your keystrokes are encrypted and rerouted directly to your browser through its own unique path. Your keystrokes bypass the typical places keyloggers normally reside. That helps eliminate your vulnerability to keylogging attacks which could compromise your personal information causing you financial or identity losses. $29.99
MXL® Tempo USB Microphone One of the most important tools I work with daily is a microphone. My radio studio has top-level equipment, and I have built a decent facsimile in my home office. The Tempo Microphone from MXL is my choice because of its audio capability and ease of use with my computer. The Tempo is an allpurpose USB mic for recording on your PC or Mac® – with no other equipment. Connect it to your computer. Record your vocals or instruments. Plug into the mic’s headphone jack for zerolatency monitoring and crystal-clear playback. You’ll get professional-sounding results, whether you’re recording music, podcasts or voice-overs. The microphone also works with a wide variety of online voice and video chat services like Skype™ and Google Chat. $79.95

OUSTON HAS ARRIVED. WITH FORBES NAMING US ONE OF THE COOLEST CITIES AND BON APPÉTIT LAUDING OXHEART AS A CULINARY GEM, THE CITY IS HAVING ITS MOMENT. A 180 FROM THOSE OTHER MOMENTS (ENRON, “FATTEST CITY,” IKE) WE’D ALL RATHER FORGET. FOR MOST BORN AND RAISED HERE, MYSELF INCLUDED, THIS CITY HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE CANVAS FOR WONDER AND OPPORTUNITY … EVERYONE ELSE IS JUST CATCHING ON. THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF OPINIONS AND THESE OPINIONS CAN EITHER MAKE OR BREAK YOU. AND QUITE FRANKLY, WE’RE OPEN TO CRITICISM. CONSTRUCTIVE OR NOT, BECAUSE WITH IT, COMES CHANGE. AND IF YOU KNOW THIS CITY, YOU KNOW CHANGE IS RAMPANT. THE KITCHEN This city supports its local talent and strives to hone it, perINCUBATOR fect it and let it thrive. Nowhere is it truer than in this culi-

nary realm. A handful – two handfuls – of chefs have grown, supported and sprouted together in the city to help each reach their potential and in turn help Houston reach its potential. While there are those that are blessed with a particular skill set, others go the apprenticeship route and some choose the academic route. Culinary Institute Le Notre, run by husband and wife team, Chef Alain and Marie LeNotre, offers an academic route with hours not only spent in a classroom setting but also in the kitchen lab plus an internship at their very own Kris Bistro. With over 40 years of experience, Chef Alain and his staff of Executive Chefs supervise and instruct students on the basics, guiding them into a world of cuisines with 85% of the focus done handson in the kitchen labs.

he Kitchen Incubator offers the genius of licensed commercial kitchens for rent and the additional value of advisory services and business development to turn your culinary goals into fruition. Their website states “you can come in with an idea and leave with a business.” They’ve helped launch over 18 businesses in two years with seven of those graduating to their own facilities. Boomtown Coffee, coincidentally featured in Open on page 60 this month, is one of those. Here, a community of like-minded individuals comes together to help perfect a business with the ability to test and bounce ideas off each other before exposing it to a sea of criticism.
THE PASS AND PROVISIONS
Photography by Ralph Smith
There is no lack of excitement though for new or innovative thinking. In fact, Houstonians encourage it and although it seems like on Yelp and other review sites, customers feed off the bad experiences, there’s nothing like the satisfaction of discovering a new favorite that has yet to be shared. It’s your secret for a month and then the word spreads and it’s foodie/curiosity madness. And there are plenty of know-it-alls willing to tell how to make your food better or how to run your business. Wouldn’t you like to tell them how to run their house?!

One such place that has reviewers, foodies and restaurateurs waiting in anticipation is the double concept known as The Pass and Provisions. From the moment the news dropped of not one but TWO chefs sharing the same space to provide different experiences, the city was intrigued. It could change the culinary blueprint. Two chefs: comrades, not rivals, but supporters of each other’s passion sharing burdens, hardships and triumphs – it’s unheard of! But fascinating! The Pass will be a fine dining prix fixed experience while Provisions will be centered around a wood-burning oven in a casual community setting. The idea is romantic.

nd with such inspiring up-and-comers, iconic institutions reinvent themselves. Not to keep up but as a sign of growth and evolution. The idea that as you change, so too can your vision and presentation. And although we maybe weary of change, we do it every day so why shouldn’t these institutions be able to do the same? Chef Monica Pope is a trailblazer of this refreshing idea. Pope’s T’afia fed the masses for almost a decade. In that time Pope evolved and so did her vision. The Sparrow frees itself from the cage, the symbolism of not conforming to what others feel you should but rather to think outside of the box. Freedom to return to what is true. Going back to basics with food, ingredients and presentation, making your dining experience about great food, a casual setting and your family. The dream progressed but the passion for food and the entertainment of dining remains the same.
“Going back to basics with food, ingredients and presentation, making your dining experience about great food, a casual setting and your family...”
These natural progressions, supported by a community eager for triumphs while seeming to like criticizing, in reality is hopeful for success. When these culinary experiments become permanent establishments not only do the dreams of these creative culinary artists become a reality but also the city of Houston is praised for what we, locals and transplants who’ve grown to love the city, have always believed – Houston is what dreams are made of. Come to think of it, Forbes got it right. We are pretty dang cool!

MONSTER PBJ TRUCK www.monsterpbj.com www.facebook.com/Monsterpbj | 1.855.PBJ.LOVE CUISINE PBJ MADNESS! There is something about a Peanut Butter and Jelly (PBJ) sandwich that has a cult following. My husband is one of those cult followers. WHEN I GOT AN EMAIL THAT THERE WAS A NEW TRUCK IN TOWN DEDICATED TO PBJS, I WAS INTRIGUED. Apparently, a LOT of people fancy this childhood sandwich. And then I saw the truck, the Monster logo, the sandwich options and kind of fell for the truck myself. It’s marketing at its finest. On the brown paper sack, on the stickers, you’ll find their monster staring right back at you. And the options – oh, the options. From picking your size – a junior, one slice, half stacked, to the classic two slices stacked to the monster three slices stacked – there is one for your appetite. Then the bread – choose from white, wheat or gluten-free white. You pick your nut butter, fruit (jam and the sliced variety) and finally a sweetener. And the customization doesn’t stop there! Don’t like crust? Remove it. Grill your PBJ. Plus choose the cut: triangles, perfect halves, quarters, it can all be done. We had a classic with cashew butter, strawberry jam, sliced bananas and Nutella® and a classic with peanut butter, blueberry jam, sliced apples and Nutella. The first grilled, the latter not. Ummm, Mom, you’ve got some explaining to do! Who knew I could have all of these filler options?! Both amazing. I loved the grilled version with sliced bananas and cashew butter. It was slightly sweeter than the peanut butter/sliced apple classic whose subtleness won me over. With all these options though, I’m dying to get my hands on a sliced strawberry, Nutella, almond butter, apple jam combo. Facebook, Twitter – check them out today and get your hand on your personalized PBJ. It’s “certiMPBJ bag+wrapper fied monsterlicious!”

LOCATED RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO ROOTS IS WHERE YOU’LL FIND THIS REFRESHING LITTLE OUTPOST. MAKING FRESH, TO-ORDER JUICES AND SMOOTHIES IS THEIR SPECIALTY. Here at the 002houston headquarters, you could call us juiceheads. We are HUGE fans of the movement with Editor Carla Valencia de Martinez being our leader. If you are a juice fan or not, Roots is the place to figure it all out. They have starter juices like the citrus Liquid Sunshine, to acquired flavor juices like an earthy Green Age Dreams, to the unique juices like the subtle spice of a Summer Fling. The texroots basket ture is light, just like juice. Not thick or chunky, swigging them down is easy. When I’m not in the mood to juice or don’t have time, I love to drop in and grab a couple to keep my energy up. Juice has that power. I’m currently addicted to the Summer Fling. Super-hydrating watermelon is mixed with cilantro, Serrano and lime. It’s a subtle spice and it’s amazing! I won’t even try to recreate it at home because I’m in no need to try to achieve that proper balance. Another unique refresher is the Cuke. A mix of cucumber, apple, lime and mint make for bright, crisp delight on a warm day. Aside from juices and smoothies, they have several bites to choose from too. Don’t miss out on the Sunny Sandwich. In between slices of gluten-free sunflower seed bread are layered basil pesto, avocado, goat cheese, squash blossoms and sunflower sprouts. The ingredients are all local and it’s a veggie delight! If you are doing a juice cleanse or even curious, if you like to eat light, feel light or curious about juice, Roots Juice is the place to go to not only have a great juice experience but also their friendly staff is more than willing to answer questions and educate.

Having honed his retail expertise at the Kitchen Incubator with Café Luz, Boomtown Coffee Heights is the bricks and mortar of Matthew Toomey’s labor of love for the bean. Located in what used to be The Ashbury on 19th Street, this coffee shop has won over the hearts of the Heights. One visit and it’s no surprise. You can find Matt there and his friendly and knowledgeable staff. There’s a space that allows for cozy lounge seating or tabletop plus free WIFI for work, study or play. On our visit we sat and talked with Matt, who happens to be a long-time family friend, about his venture. A love for the art of making coffee and providing a service to the area with a good attitude is undeniable. The steady stream of regulars and new visitors must see this too. They make a mean iced coffee that didn’t have me clawing up the walls, thankfully. (My attention span can go if I have too much coffee or too strong coffee.) Like Matt says, “The proof is in the cup.” Which is pretty dang good proof. I also had a light Vegetable Baguette composed of a red olive and goat cheese spread, pickled cucumber and avocado, made open-faced, served with a side salad. One of their most popular items is their Gringo taco or Grincaco. Wrapped in the most amazing corn tortilla by Amaize Artisanal Flatbread, who preserves the old school method by using heirloom varietal corn plus no preservatives – just maize and water. Inside this awesome tortilla you’ll find homemade salsa, black beans, homemade barbacoa, avocado, cheese and a fried egg. It smells divine. Homemade is a big component, from the coffee to the food. Including the out-of-this-world, oldfashioned chocolate chip with sea salt (I know, madness) cookies made by a gentleman right down the block. People talk big about their baking but this man delivers. So much so, they are constantly sold out of his cookies. Looking to support a local business that is looking to start your day off right, Boomtown Coffee Heights is just that.

TRACY’S
Tasty Tidbits By Tracy Karp | Tracy Karp photography by Sofia van der Dys
I THINK MOST PEOPLE WOULD AGREE THAT VEGETABLES ARE A VITAL PART TO A HEALTHY DIET. VEGETABLES ARE FULL OF ANTIOXIDANTS, WHICH MAY HELP PROTECT THE BODY AGAINST HEART DISEASE AND CERTAIN TYPES OF CANCERS. VEGETABLES ARE FIBER RICH, HELPING TO KEEP DIGESTION IN LINE AND REDUCE THE RISK OF OBESITY AND TYPE 2 DIABETES. WHILE THERE ARE COUNTLESS POSITIVE INCENTIVES FOR EATING VEGETABLES, TASTE IS NOT ALWAYS AT THE TOP OF THE LIST. HOWEVER, WHEN IT COMES TO VEGGIES, THE FLAVOR IS SOLELY BASED UPON THE PREPARATION. BY CHANGING UP THE PROCESS IN WHICH THESE NUTRIENT-RICH FOODS ARE MADE, YOU MAY FIND THE ZUCCHINI YOU DREADED EATING YESTERDAY TO BE DELECTABLE AS A GRILLED SIDE DISH TODAY. JUST BECAUSE YOU DID NOT ENJOY RAW MUSHROOMS ON YOUR SALAD, THAT DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL NOT FALL HEAD OVER HEELS FOR STOVE-TOP SAUTÉED MUSHROOMS (AS SEEN BELOW).
ne quality I love about cooking vegetables is the versatility that comes with them. A little creativity can go a long way. You can eat them raw, steamed, roasted, sautéed, grilled, stewed – and that’s just to name a few. My go-to preparation would have to be the roasted option. This easy method brings out the vegetables’ sweet flavors. You can take Brussels sprouts, broccolini, cauliflower or any other vegetable of your choice. Preheat the oven to 400°F, toss in some olive oil, a few pinches of coarse salt, add a sprinkle (or two) of garlic powder and roast on a baking sheet for about 30 minutes. Voila! Delicious and nutritious!
O
I have included two simple recipes that are sure to please your diet and your taste buds too!
ROASTED BROCCOLI WITH PARMESAN CHEESE Preheat oven to 450°. Lightly oil a nonstick baking pan. Sprinkle kosher salt on top. Arrange fresh or frozen broccoli florets on pan. Drizzle olive oil along tops of broccoli. (A generous amount of cooking spray will work too.) Cook for about 20 minutes. Sprinkle fresh Parmesan cheese on top and cook for another 5 minutes. For extra crispy broccoli, cook an extra 5 minutes or so. SAUTÉED MUSHROOMS Heat 2 teaspoons olive oil, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, a pinch of kosher salt, a pinch of fresh ground pepper and mushrooms in a nonstick sautéing pan. Add 2 tablespoons of water and allow mushrooms to soften while stirring continuously. Once the water has dissolved, allow mushrooms to lightly brown. Serve from pan.

Bea Here Now
By Beatrice Allen
Yay! October! MY FAVORITE MONTH. NO INTRO NEEDED. JUST TAKE IT ALL IN, PEEPS. OK, I COULDN’T GET AWAY WITH THAT. BUT, YES, IT’S THE MONTH I LOOK FORWARD TO MOST. IT STARTS OFF THE HOLIDAY SWING PLUS OTHER SPECIAL DATES FOR ME. I WON’T BORE YOU WITH THOSE DETAILS BECAUSE I’M 99.9% SURE YOU COULD READ THE SAME INTRO PARAGRAPH IN PAST OCTOBER ISSUES. IT’S THE BEGINNING OF SEPTEMBER (AT PRESS TIME) AND REST ASSURED, I STILL DON’T HAVE MY HALLOWEEN COSTUME FIGURED OUT. I STILL HAVE TIME. IF THIS IS IN YOUR HANDS OCTOBER 1ST, I HAVE 30 DAYS TO MAKE MIRACLES HAPPEN. IT DOESN’T HELP THAT I LOST FIVE DAYS IN NEW YORK FOR FASHION WEEK (THAT STORY IS SEVERAL PAGES BEFORE THIS GREAT READ). IN THE MEANTIME, ENJOY A LITTLE DOOZY THAT INCLUDES A LOCAL ICONIC INSTITUTION, A SUSHI DEAL/STEAL, SOUTHERN COMFORT AT ITS FINEST, AN ITALIAN SPOT THAT HAS YET TO DISAPPOINT AND A HIP, COOL BAR THAT MAKES ME WANT TO JOIN A BAND, DRINK LIQUOR NEAT AND GET A TATTOO. KIDDING, MOM.
Tony’s 3755 Richmond 713.622.6778 www.tonyshouston.com For special occasions, ladies who lunch and girls who like to sit in the bar with bubbles, a bowl of cheese, cotton candy and soufflé. It’s what GREAT days are made of. The new Tableside Truffled Mozzarella with Umbrian black truffles is lifealtering deliciousness. Prepared tableside and served hot, it’s meant to be devoured warm while the scent of truffle permeates the air. Top it off with their masterpiece soufflé that is a work of art of biblical proportions. It’s huge. And must be experienced at least once in your life. Memorable dishes for memorable moments are what Tony’s is serving.
Uptown Sushi 1131-14 Uptown Park Blvd. 713.871.1200 www.uptown-sushi.com If you missed out on our 002houston dinner special at Uptown – well, you missed out. Never have I experienced that much delectable sushi, from salads to soups to sashimi to a platter of sushi all to myself for $50. PLUS a bottle of sake for two. It was unforgettable. The quality, the amount, it was above and beyond and such a deal. Here is to hoping this becomes a once-amonth treat with an evolving menu.
BRC 519 Shepherd Dr. 713.861.2233 www.brcgastropub.com I mean, just slay me, BRC. First you rock my world with your amazing burger and the unbeatable burger Monday deal and then you show up at my place of business with this bad A$$ box of biscuit “crack.” ARE YOU CRAZY?! The diet mentioned below goes out the window with these goodies. In this box you’ll find a dozen biscuits, a pimento cheese jar and a bacon jam jar plus potato salad and a cider jug. At first I went the separate route with the spreads and then I said the heck with it, layering! Ummm, I’m comatose. I’ll have to get back to you on this…Get yourself a box; call 24 hours in advance and there are options. It’s unforgettable.
Coppa 5555 Washington Ave. 713.426.4260. www.copparistorante.com (Yes, they appear in here a lot. No, they don’t pay me or buy my meals or adver-
tise. They’re just that good.) Chef Brandi Key gets me every time. The staff puts up with us while we rearrange their tables into this and then they deal with Chatty Kathy girls who want like ten different things all at once. The last time I was there, I went with the gulf fish en cartoccio. Oh. My. God. It was amazing. There is nothing like the tenderness of this light, simple, elegantly prepared fish. Following a diet, this is your dish. It’s 100 percent satisfying even though you are passing up pizza and pasta – and you won’t feel you have to skip out on the zeppole. You can’t leave without a little Italian donut dessert after all. You were so good!
Mongoose vs. Cobra 1011 McGowen 713.650.MVSC www.mongooseversuscobra.com Unbeknownst to me I’m a fan of the Moscow Mule. So sophisticated, I know. And this new, cool spot in Midtown is just the place to have one. Served in various vintage barware, this expansive space with exposed wood, large garage-style windows and community seating should not be missed on your next night out. It truly is like nowhere else in the city.

AKE A MOMENT AND ASK YOURSELF THIS QUESTION: HOW DO YOU FEEL? YES, RIGHT NOW. USE THIS SIMPLE SCALE – 1EQUALS PRETTY DARN BAD UP TO 10 WHICH EQUALS PRETTY DARN GREAT. IF YOUR ANSWER IS ANY NUMBER NOT 10 – HECK, EVEN IF IT IS A 10 AND YOU ARE LOOKING TO HIT 11 – WE HAVE THE SOLUTION: J. BLACK’S FEEL GOOD KITCHEN & LOUNGE.
club+lounge review By Michael Cook Photography by Daniel Ortiz
The good Dr. is in, and his “office” is located on the corner of Washington Ave. and Heights Blvd. This building always had high hopes. All Phil wanted to do was open a BBQ joint. Picking the former Southwest Muffler and Brake spot, Phil set out on an expensive and beautiful build-out and opened his dream, Phil’s Texas Barbecue. Reality hit Phil’s hard and the dream didn’t last very long, leaving the building to sit empty for quite some time. That all changed a few months ago when the family-owned, Austin- bred Feel Good Kitchen & Lounge announced it was on its way to town. J. BLACK’S is here and if the recent valet lines (free from 4-7pm) and crowds inside are any indication, you could surmise it should have been located in this exact spot some time ago, maybe saving Phil from ultimate demise.
J. BLACK’S KITCHEN+LOUNGE
dr. feelgood
We found ourselves around a 10 on the scale one Wednesday (we got some great news on Tuesday) so to J. BLACKS’ we went. After navigating the slammin’ parking situation we enter through a very unique front door. People are everywhere! The place looks great though. This is certainly not Phil’s anymore. You are now given a choice of which side of the building to let the feel good therapy begin: the right side, laid out and decorated more like a “bar,” or the left side, the swanky “lounge.” A friendly receptionist is there to help guide the way but man it’s crowded. Oh, it’s the Friends of St Jude Summer Happy Hour, and they have quite the group on the bar side. Anyone planning an event take note: J. BLACK’S is a heck of a spot for a happy hour and the Houston management (all female!!) know how to host.

Because of good St. Jude our mission to feel good starts in the lounge which is just dandy because not only is there a good crowd over here they are a good-looking crowd as well!We expect this is the norm for J. BLACK’S. Let the therapy begin! We select barley-based therapy, a nice pint of Scrimshaw Pilsner from North Coast Brewing. As any good Texas lounge would have it, there are plenty of local and craft beer selections on draft and bottles galore. Ol’ J. did try and persuade us to do cocktailbased therapy as the specialty menu of “recipes & remedies” looked solid – so noted for next session. Champagne and wine are on the menu too because as you all know, therapy comes in many different glasses.

“FEEL GOOD NOW”
On our second feel good session, we were delighted to find pizza and pint night which includes $3 Texas pints and ½ price pizza (every Tuesday evening and Friday lunch). Let’s just say the Winner Winner pizza was awesome. Charlie Sheen would approve! Other menu offerings are split up by starters, salads, sharing plates (group therapy!), artisanal pizzas and sliders. Dessert? Yes! Feeling good also requires a salted caramel brownie. This menu has some high-quality therapy! Therapy in the morning? Sure. Brunch is available Saturday and Sunday. It’s possible we did hit an 11. Both times. Really, though, we don’t think you need to be persuaded any further. Go get some feel good therapy as soon as you can. On the bottom of the drink menu J. BLACK’S tell us to “FEEL GOOD. NOW.” Fine! Don’t mind if we do!

recording Interview by Lance Scott Walker Photography by Anthony Rathbun
CHINGO BLING SPEAKING BY PHONE FROM CORPUS CHRISTI, WHERE HE IS WORKING ON A PROJECT WITH DJ DUST, THE ARTIST KNOWN FOR THE ALBUM AND THE SLOGAN THEY CAN’T DEPORT US ALL IS STILL AT IT. So how’s Corpus? Do you do a lot of shows down there, a lot of work down there? Actually, it’s almost like there’re two Corpuses. Because I’m an outsider, that’s kind of how I view it. What Dust and his crew are creating down here in downtown Corpus is basically something that — like they’re all really, really creative, and in the past, most of the creative folks felt like they had to leave the city to make stuff happen, but basically what they have going on down here — they’ve got like studios, sushi bar, art gallery, nightclubs, just a bunch of cool shit. They’re working directly with the city, because the city’s taking note of what they’re doing. They’re reviving downtown. So now, one thing they put together is like First Friday, the ArtWalk, and on First Friday you see families down here, strollers and just people out … the community, they want stuff. And really like all that stuff that they’re doing, it hits close to home with me, with all the stuff and the changes and growth that I’m trying to do, which is express myself as an artist. I get a lot of satisfaction out of expressing myself, and it’s just like I’m finding … it’s like an old love that I’m being reacquainted with. Because in high school and stuff I was all about art class. I did installation art where, at that school I went to … let’s say parents come to visit their kids and they walk through the art building, well, they see this big installation piece with like some immigration shit going on! Little toy soldiers lined up on sand on a map, lined up alongside the U.S./Mexico border.
You’ve had a lot to say about that before. With the election coming up and the Latino vote being so important, will you involve yourself at all in politics, use your platform to reach out? As of now, I haven’t really felt compelled to really say much, and it probably comes back to feeling jaded a little bit to where like everyone’s really excited about Obama, you know, “Oh, shit! There’s hope and there’s change!” Everyone has these unrealistic expectations. You know, because stuff was so bad, in my opinion, right up to that point. You’ve got all this war … so, you know, they promise, “We’re going to bring all the troops home! We’re getting up out of there,” “We’re against war,” and all these things, but I’m just to the point where I feel like, you know, we have two people to choose from, and that’s one more option than a dictatorship in a way. Or like a Third World country, where just like, “Okay, he’s the king, and he’s there because his daddy was the king, and his granddaddy was the king.” Here, it’s just kind of like … for instance, if my daughter wants to argue with me in the morning, she’s like, “No, I want to wear this!” It’s totally mismatched. I’m gonna look like a bad dad if she wears it. So I’m like, “Okay, I’m gonna let you pick your clothes. Now check this out: You have these two options, which are already pre-approved by me.” [laughs] You know? And she’s like, “Great! I have a choice!” And that’s just kind of how I look at things. But I don’t know — as of now, I really don’t have too much
of an opinion. I just kind of stay out of it. And really, I’ve tried to keep my mouth closed about a lot of that stuff because I don’t want people viewing me as the type of opportunist to where, “Ah, yeah — if there’s a campaign … how do I align myself with it?” Do you feel like your music has taken a different direction to where something like that wouldn’t be such a part of it? I guess one way to explain it is that in my opinion, a lot of people saw They Can’t Deport Us All from a political standpoint, like it’s strictly political. And to me, the reason I love the slogan so much is because I look back at my career and to me, that’s like a really, really bright moment. Well, it was bittersweet. It was mixed. But the slogan itself, to me, I love the slogan because to me, it’s like some of my greatest art. I look at it as art, because even though it was an album on a label and there was a budget behind it, I felt like we stuck with our guns with that title because in the long run, in a sense, not only did it help define where I stood on things and what I was about, but I was drawing the line in the sand. Beyond that, I’m very proud of it because I felt like I made a statement that … I don’t want to say it’s poetic or anything like that, but I just felt like it’s in your face and that — at the time, that was my style of expression.
