En la estadio de Boca Juniors se conoce como “tribuna de Casa Amarilla” a la que ocupa la hinchada local, en la cabecera norte. También “arco de Casa Amarilla”, al que se ubica sobre ese sector. En esa dirección se encuentra el Complejo Casa Amarilla, espacio para el entrenamiento del plantel profesional y otras dependencias del Club. Pero ¿qué es esa tan mentada Casa Amarilla? Ubicada sobre la Avenida Guillermo Brown es la réplica de la casa que tenía a metros de allí el legendario Almirante Brown, marino irlandés que llegó a Buenos Aires en 1811 y se enamoró del ímpetu independentista de aquel momento. Creó la marina nacional y, siempre en inferioridad de condiciones, doblegó a las poderosas flotas imperiales de España y Brasil con enorme capacidad estratégica y un valor a
prueba de cañonazos, que lo llevó a encarar, por su cuenta, una campaña corsaria para debilitar la flota española del Pacífico. Ya anciano, combatió contra el bloqueo anglofrancés llegando a vencer al italiano Giuseppe Garibaldi. Esa Casa Amarilla abrigó su gloria, pero también su mayor dolor: la muerte (se especula que por suicidio) de su hija mayor, Eliza, de 17 años, profundamente deprimida por la reciente muerte en combate de su prometido, destacado oficial de su padre, Francisco Drummond. En 1857, en aquella Casa Amarilla, falleció uno de los Almirantes qué más veces entró en batalla en la historia naval mundial. Uno de los hombres que más hizo por la libertad de América, dejó su huella detrás de un arco de la cancha de Boca.

Also, the goal on that end is known as the “Casa Amarilla” goal. That side of the stadium points at the Casa Amarilla complex, a venue where the players train, and where other facilities of the Club are located. /// But, why is the yellow house so famous? /// Standing on Guillermo Brown avenue, it’s a replica of the house of legendary Admiral Brown, an Irish sailor who arrived in Buenos Aires in 1811 and got caught by the Independentist spirit of the time. He created the Argentine navy and, always at a disadvantage, defeated the powerful imperial fleets of Spain and Brazil with his huge strategic skills and cannonball-proof courage, which allowed him to lead, on his own, a corsair-like campaign to weaken the Spanish fleet of the Pacific ocean. As an old man, he fought against the Anglo-French blockade, defeating Italian Giuseppe Garibaldi. /// That yellow house harbored his glory, but also the cause of his greatest grief: the death (possibly by suicide) of his eldest daugher, Eliza, aged 17, who suffered from a serious case of depression as a result of the recent death in combat of his fiance, Francisco Drummond, an oustanding officer under the command of her father. /// In 1857, in that yellow house, died one of the Admirals who fought the most times in the history of world naval battles. One of the men who did the most for the freedom of America left his trace behind one of the goals of Boca stadium.

There’s a unique charm to the Northern region of Argentina. Before jumping on the bus I asked myself, “Why is Salta called la linda (pretty)?” The answer revealed itself when I arrived. It’s a city surrounded by mountains, beautiful wherever you look. / / / I walked around a bit, and wandered the streets of the city. The only sight I missed was from the air, on one of its aerial trams. / / / First thing I did was to take the “Train to the Clouds”. I was woken up by my roommate at 6 a.m. I wanted to kill her, but I knew that a myriad marvels lay ahead. My anxiety subsided as the train started on and left the city behind and went into the heart of Salta. We crossed 29 bridges, went through 21 tunnels, 13 viaducts, 2 zigzags and 2 loops across 434 km (out and back). Each loop we took we went up 18 meters. Engineer Richard Maury came up with this system inspired by the flight of a hawk. A genius. After a few hours of going through amazing scenic views, we made it to the La Polvorilla viaduct, at 4220 meters above sea level. Insanely pretty. Right there in the heights, the train made a stop and we got off for a little walk. Just a few steps away, tucked between some rocks, I found a man making ham and cheese pies. Bring it on! I was starving.
On the way back, we stopped at San Antonio de los Cobres, a very quiet village, where cheerful people welcomes you offering their crafts, but I was still hungry and bought 2 fruit salads from Vane, a local. Once on the train, I made friends with people from all over the world, especially with a party of very cool Spaniards with whom I spent a great deal of the journey back drinking beers in the train’s dining car. I had a blast. I almost filled my camera’s memory card with pictures./ / /The next day, Francisco picked me up and we went for a bike ride on the mountains, through the vegetable cover of Valle de Lerma. My 4 ride buddies were English and Irish. The day was perfect because it was humid, giving the air and the paths a special smell. We rode on all sorts of surfaces, including rocky paths that went up and down, brooks and rivers. It was killing, but I enjoyed it so much, the Yungas circuit is pure adventure. / / / I spent 3 days in Tolar Grande. It’s simply out of this world. A wonderful place, a total must. It all began in Salta, took the local bus to go back to San Antonio de los Cobres. There I met with my travel buddies:
Claudia and José and, of course, Juan, who would guide us throughout the entire adventure. We started off on a truck to Tolar, the first attraction on the way being me throwing up by the road. I had had a rush lunch, and the puna got me. Afterwards, I was already a different person. It was only then that I started enjoying the endless views along the road. We saw the Salar del Diablo, the Seven Curves, Los Colorados and a few other salt lakes. We ran across herds of vicuñas and other wild animals. Every 5 minutes we stopped to take pictures because we were amazed with so much spectacularity, so many rocks, so much to learn. Up there everything is huge and everything becomes magnified. We even experienced a small sand storm, we couldn’t see a thing, everything went red, seemed like we were in Mars. On the way we passed by Alto Chorrillo, the highest point on the route, standing at 4560 m above sea level. I had never been / We spent the night at the municipal refuge of Tolar Grande and on the following day / so high up while having my feet on the earth. / Miguel, a local guide, joined us and took us to the “Ojo de Mar”, or “sea eye”, two turquoise water wells in the middle of a salt lake. An outlandish sight. We went on
to the Arenal. The name means “place full of sand”, and it’s self-descriptive. We did a little mountain trekking and on the top we got one of the best views of the Andes Range. You’d breathe pure air. José tried bum boarding but he got stuck. We should have brought a sandboard. It was the perfect spot for it. After a light meal, the next stop was the Cono de Arita, at the Arizaro salt lake. I never imagined I was going to find such a whimsical work of nature, it’s a unique thing. We hiked for about 5 km from the salt lake to the foot of this 187m-high hill in the middle of the white desert. I just sat there, meditating, absorbing the energies of the place. When I thought we were going back, we went up to a lookout point to see this marvel at its best. Juan didn’t say a thing to make it a surprise, but the thing is when we arrived we found a spectacular view. The Cono de Arita seemed to float over all the whiteness surrounding it. It was the postcard image of my trip.
Back in Salta, I decided I couldn’t leave withou t doing a horse ride. We arrived in a ranch called “La Quesera”, where Gonzalo and his scout friends welcomed me. The place is a conven t built in 1823. You could breathe history in there. After a safety talk, I jumped on the horse and rode across the vegetation and valley s, in the Valle de La Quesera. The peace surrou nding the place was from another world, just what I was looking for. We reached a lookou t point, and once again I was stump for words on the scenic view of the valley. When we got back to the ranch, a succulent asado was waitin g, but before that I was challenged to a game of sapo—the loser would have vegetables for dinner. I took it on immediately. I had a good aim, so I ate beef. Incredible beef. My last day there was relaxed, among gaucho friends, asado, and right in the middle of the countryside. I couldn’t ask for more. Pan. Todo pasa de repente: el Dani, los dos pies alineados hacia mí, el taco derecho apoyado en el puntín del izquierdo, me mira con ansiedad. Queso, pronuncio al tiempo que imito su gesto, mi pie derecho se acopla al izquierdo en línea recta hacia él. Todos nos miran con ansiedad. Pan. Queso. Es curioso: la estamos pisando el Dani y yo para disputarnos quién elegirá tercero y quién cuarto, porque ya sabemos quién va a ser el primero que elija cada uno. El de él, el Negro Flores, el que mejor mueve la bocha en todo el barrio. El mío, Ramiro, que es mi amigo. Pan. Queso. Pan y queso, vamos diciendo. Él da un pasito, un paso del tamaño exacto de su pie, y después yo hago lo mismo, una vez cada uno, nos vamos acercando como dos trenes que van a chocar de frente, y cuando estemos muy cerca uno de los dos dará un paso que dejará la punta de su pie demasiado cerca de la punta del pie del otro, y entonces ese otro, con su siguiente paso, lo pisará. Y elegirá primero. Pan. Queso. Ramiro no es muy bueno al fóbal, pero es mi amigo. Al Dani esas cosas no le importan: solo quiere ganar. Por eso sabemos que va a elegir primero al Negro Flores, que es un engreído, un morfón insoportable, un sorete. Pan. Queso. Estoy nervioso. No pensé que me pondría así la otra vez, cuando para que me dejara de joder le dije que sí, que estaba bien, que lo definíamos con un picadito acá en el potrero. Pan. Queso. ¿A quién se le habrá ocurrido, cómo habrá nacido esa forma de decidir quién elige primero a la hora de armar los equipos? ¿Cuándo y dónde un chico habrá sido el primero en sentir la satisfacción de pisar el pie de su rival? Pan. Queso. Siento bajo mis pies los pozos que dejaron los caballos que pasaron por acá después de la lluvia de anteayer. Pan, queso… PAN. Mierda. Ramiro, dice el Dani. ¿Eh? Desconcierto. Desconcierto total en la cara de Ramiro, en la mía, en la de todos. Me toca. ¿A quién elijo? Al Negro Flores, ni en pedo. Más desconcierto. El Polaquito, digo. El Negro, señala el Dani al Negro Flores, la sonrisa enorme en sus caras. Elijo al Flaco Meza… Me ganó cuando me ganó el pan y queso, que en realidad está definido desde el principio: el orden es invariable, el tamaño de cada pie también. Una vez que empieza, solo queda esperar que la suma de los pasos revele al inevitable ganador. Yo no quería jugar en contra de Ramiro. Tiene la malicia del diablo, el Dani, el hijo de puta. ¿Cuánto salimos? Ni me acuerdo. Creo que ellos metieron algún gol más que nosotros… BREAD AND CHEESE /// Bread. Totally disconcerted. ‘Polaquito,’ I say. ‘El Negro,’ says Dani pointing at Negro Flores, both grinning. I pick Flaco Meza… /// He beat me the moment he won at bread and cheese, which is settled right from the start: the order is invariable, so is the length of each foot. Once you start playing, there’s nothing you can do but hope that the sum of the steps reveals the unavoidable winner. I didn’t want to play against Ramiro. That Dani, he’s as mean as hell, that son of a bitch. What was the score? I don’t even remember. I think they might have scored a goal or two more than us…

Miguel y sus hijos de 5 y 7 años estaban viendo un partido en la cancha de Comunicaciones. Pasó frente a ellos un vendedor de cuyo bolsillo estaba a punto de caerse uno de los billetes que venía recaudando. Miguel tomó el billete y se lo alcanzó al vendedor, quien no le dio tiempo a avisarle que ese billete le pertenecía: en seguida le dio un puñado de caramelos. La anécdota ilustra la manera de ser
y de comerciar de aquel inolvidable vendedor de unos caramelos caseros que él mismo fabricaba: no importaba el monto del dinero ofrecido, la respuesta era siempre un puñado de caramelos, envueltos en exagerada cantidad de papel, extraídos de la gran bolsa que los contenía. Ambos, vendedor y caramelos, eran conocidos como Chuenga. Y eran habitués de partidos de fútbol en casi
cualquier cancha de la ciudad de Buenos Aires en los que llamaba la atención con sus coloridos pulóveres. “¡Chuengaaa!” era el grito que lo hizo popular. No había peso ni medida. Ni precio. La cantidad imprecisa, el valor no estipulado. Ése era el contrato entre Chuenga y la gente. El nombre viene de la deformación de “chewing gum”, goma de mascar, en inglés. Pero ese empalagoso e irregular caramelo blan-
co era de todo menos masticable: era durísimo. La leyenda cuenta que José Eduardo Pastor después de 40 o quizás 50 años de Chuenga, dejó de ir a las canchas cuando dejó este mundo, allá por 1984, llevándose a la tumba la fórmula de la golosina. Se fue y dejó un lugar que nadie ocupó: no hay gaseosa, choripán, gorro, bandera o vincha (ni sus vendedores) que se le parezcan.

Miguel and his children, aged 5 and 7, were watching a football match at the Comunicaciones stadium. A vendor walked past them, who was about to lose a bill that was falling from his pocket. Miguel took the bill and passed it to the vendor, who didn’t give Miguel enough time to tell him that the bill actually belonged to him: the vendor immediately produced a handful of candy. /// The story describes the ways of that unforgettable vendor of home-made hard candy he made himself: no matter how much you’d offer him, the reply was always a handful of candy, which he pulled out of a big bag, wrapped in an excessive amount of paper. /// Vendor and candy were both known by the name of Chuenga. And they were regulars at football matches in almost any stadium in the city of Buenos Aires, where he stood out for his colourful sweaters. /// “Chuengaaa!”, was the cry that made him popular. There was no weight or measure. Or price. The amount was uncertain, the value was undetermined. That was the contract between Chuenga and his customres. The name is a deformed version of “chewing gum”, in English. But that sickly sweet, irregular white candy was everything but chewable: it was hard as rock. /// Legend has it that José Eduardo Pastor, after 40 or maybe 50 years of selling Chuenga, stopped going to the stadiums when he passed away, in 1984, taking the recipe of his product with him and leaving a gap yet unfilled: there’s no soda drink, hotdog, cap, banner or headband (or the sellers of them) that compares.

Por esos pagos y por esa época conoce a Jorge Jones, inglés, bon vivant, exigente bebedor, fanático del agua tónica inglesa. Él sería quien le plantee el desafío a Magnini: fabricar un agua tónica de la calidad de las importadas. Jones conocía los ingredientes pero no tenía idea de las proporciones. / / / Magnini recogió el guante: elaboraba una prueba y la sometía al veredicto del inglés. Así una y otra vez. Hasta que un día de 1929, Jones dijo: “esto es una verdadera tónica inglesa”. / / / Fue un éxito instantáneo en el pueblo y muy pronto en la cercana Durazno y en poco tiempo en Montevideo. / / / La demanda exigía crecimiento. Se arma una sociedad anónima con acciones vendidas a todo el pueblo. En 1950 se abre una segunda fábrica en Montevideo. / / / Con el éxito llegó la gente de Pepsi Co., trayendo una oferta irresistible y todos vendieron sus acciones. A principios de 1957 Magnini veía cómo Pepsi se quedaba con la mayoría de las acciones y su empresa se le iba de las manos. Murió, abatido, dos años más tarde. / / / Pepsi dejaría de fabricar la gaseosa en el pueblo. Cuentan los memoriosos que ya no es lo mismo pues el verdadero secreto estaba en el pozo de dónde Magnini extraía el agua: si la bebida ya se llamaba tónica por las propiedades medicinales de la quinina contenida, el agua de Paso de los Toros la mejoraba. Aquel manjar dulce y amargo a la vez, curaba cualquier mal. No como ahora que, simplemente, arrolla la sed*. 1924. Those with good memory say that the drink hasn’t been the same since, because the real secret lay in the well from which Magnini took the water. If the drink was named “tonic” because of the medicinal properties of the quinine in it, Paso de los Toros enhanced it. That bittersweet delicacy would heal any illness. Famoso en todo el mundo, este perro nació en Córdoba, en 1928. Su origen está emparentado con uno de los mayores horrores adjudicables al hombre: la riña de animales; que, en esta provincia, fue muy popular hasta comienzos del siglo XX, cuando fue prohibida. Otro motivo fue el jabalí, plaga introducida desde Europa, animal cazado no sólo por su preciada carne, sino para limitar y controlar su expansión. El “padre” del Dogo Argentino fue el Dr. Antonio Nores Martínez. En sucesivas cruzas, cada raza dejó algo: el Perro de Pelea Cordobés, el Bulldog Inglés y el Bull Terrier sumaron capacidad de combate; el Boxer, energía y bondad; el Dogo de Burdeos, porte y una poderosísima mordida; el Mastín Español, rusticidad y fuerza; el Gran Danés sumó centímetros; el Irish Wolf Hound, velocidad y talento para la caza, algo

que también viene del Pointer que además le aportó su extraordinario olfato; la blancura y resistencia a climas diversos la heredó del Perro de Montaña de los Pirineos. En la cacería es inmejorable: trabaja en grupo, pero uno solo puede detener al poderoso jabalí a la espera de otros Dogos o del cazador, con una mordida con fama de no soltarse por graves que sean las heridas que reciba en la pelea. Varios casos de ataques fatales a personas, con mayor repercusión cuando se trató de niños, le dieron mala fama. Sus defensores argumentan que todo depende de la crianza que le dé su dueño. Destacan que con su amo no hay raza más fiel y cariñosa. También cuentan que es muy callado. Y si como dice el refrán “perro que ladra no muerde”, el silencio del Dogo habla por él.

Throughout a series of crossings, each breed contributed something: the Córdoba Fighting Dog, the English Bulldog and the Bull Terrier contributed fighting power; the Boxer added energy and goodness; the Dogue de Bordeaux, its build and an extremely powerful bite; the Spanish Mastiff contributed a rustic air and strength; the Great Dane added height; the Irish Wolf Hound contributed speed and hunting skills, which was also added by the Pointer, who also contributed an extraordinary sense of smell; its white color and its resilience to various climates is an inheritance from the Great Pyrenees. /// Its hunting abilities are excellent: it works in a team, but one alone is enough to stop the powerful boar until the arrival of other Dogos or the hunter with a bite famous for not letting go no matter how serious the wounds received. /// Its reputation got damaged by several cases of lethal attacks on humans, specially when the victims were children. Its advocates argue that it all depends on the upbringing provided by the owner. They point out that no other breed is more faithful and affectionate with its master than the Argentine Dogo. It’s also said that the Dogo is very quiet. And if it’s true that a “barking dog never bites”, its silence speaks for it.
