Greetings Patients and Readers! (a few words from Uncle Henry)

Wow! Time really flies. It seems like we were just writing 420 event recaps! Here it is, finally officially summer and so many great things happening in the world of marijuana (and state laws). Just a few days ago, the state of Nevada became legal. Small steps to the goal of national acceptance. Onto this issue, another WOW! Our friend Nique Pichette, MSN, RN is back with a shared cover story in this issue with Nature Nurse pioneer Heather Manus, RN. These two sat down in an interview style format and talked cannabis, nursing and patient and personal journeys. Heather and Nique (and all the members of the American Cannabis Nurses Association), hats off to all of you. We recently met another nurse that is pro-cannabis and a big advocate for patient rights, Marissa Fratoni, RN. Marissa joins us in this issue as part of our Cannabis Nurse Warriors feature. Thanks very much for the work that you all do. Mark M. Ward’s Legal Weed series is back again with a slight twist. This time Mark teamed up with the Holi Collective to share an evening at a medicated fondue party. Jamilyn Gordon captured the evening in some great photos too. Our new friends from BeanTown GreenTown are featured in a double shot: Caregiver of the Month AND a great article that lets you get to know these guys and see why they are worth checking out! Our own Victoria Lee and @greenqueen401 both recap recent events to keep you in the loop of how things are going out there if you couldn’t attend. Geoff Charles, Ellen Lenox Smith, Master Bong and Ellen Taylor Brown have all generously shared some great articles with our readers as well. Cannabis Comics are back again for a new continuing series, “Bongman and Spliff”. Of course we have some amazing medicated recipes from Herb and Earth Organics and some fun treats from Mom’s Totally Baked Goodies. Good stuff!. I would also like to thank all of the photographers that kindly let us use their photos in support of our published articles and a very special thank you to Mary’s Nutritionals for sending us their exceptional products to review, very much appreciated. I mostly want to thank all of our readers, advertisers, supporters and the patients that make up this magazine. Keep the stories coming, keep spreading the word and get involved as much as you can! Much thanks and peace,

Event Recap: NORCAL TRIP JUNE 2017 Cannabis Cup NorCal 2017 by greenqueen401

Third times a charm,” so they say- and after my weekend in Santa Rosa, I would have to agree! The NorCal 2017 HighTimes Cannabis Cup was a huge success. Wth an estimated ten thousand patrons, Sonoma County Fairgrounds, was the place to be June 3rd and 4th for any cannabis enthusiast. Once arriving the fairgrounds, there were no lines. Just show your purchased ticket and ID then a bracelet was secured around your wrist, and entry was permitted. Life sized letters of HIGHTIMES spread across the right side of the path leading you directly to the medicated area. On the left side, were the medical card verification tables, my first stop. Although recreational cannabis is legal for anyone 21+, the commercial sale and licensing of cannabis is still TBD. For admittance into the medicated area of the event, which spanned over about half of the event space, a California medical card was mandatory. Don’t have one? No worries, directly behind the tables was an on-site doctor, and for an additional fee you could have yours the same day. My bracelet on my wrist, I walked through the prop215 gates and made my way into canna-craziness! Although the cup is regional, competition took in over 450 entries for fourteen different categories ranging from flower, hash, edibles, topical, and many more. The medicated

area was packed with vendors all vying for your attention, asking “wanna dab?”. Specials galore, and with pricing so low it was hard to resist buying a few goodies. Vendors such as The Kush Queens, who took home 2nd place in the topical category for her Lit Kit, and Cosmo D’s outrageous edibles interacted with patrons. Handing out free samples and talking all things industry. Everything you could think of infusing cannabis with was there, from almonds to potato chips. Glittery edible concoctions from the Mother Natures Edible booth, who even provided a cannabis filled claw machine which made for quite a site. Throughout the two days, seminars were held with discussion topics such as future of concentrates, how to grow cup-winning cannabis at home, and starting a canna-business 101. Sitting in on the Veterans Panel seminar, I found this particular presentation impactfull. Eddy Lepp, HighTimes Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, and @UncleStoner led the panel. Paranoia, Big Destroyer by Geoff Charles

Step number one. Turn off the goddamn TV. Right now. Understand this: Do not confuse the media with journalism. I’m in the media. It’s now pure entertainment. It’s not your grandfather’s, or great grandfather’s “Walter Cronkite” investigative, on-the-street media. It’s now part and parcel of the entertainment business. It’s purpose is to attract advertisers by increasing their overnight audience samples. The way to do that, is scare the shit out of the American people.

Vulcan oven, or a beheading in the public square.

China and Russia will never go to Def Con One in a nuclear showdown with the United States. Never.

Yes, we have a fatuous, egregious, impetuous, impulsive uneducated ape in the Oval Office. A child, who he himself admits, hasn’t changed emotionally since the first grade of his tenure in elementary school.

North Korea is an illusion. My sister has been there. All those skyscrapers? Just rebar and concrete. No floors, no people inside of them. The Magic Kingdom of Deceit and Inhumane Oppression. Of both thought, imagination, and mind. “The middle ground between light and shadow, between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge”. ( Thank you, Rod Serling). North Korea’s nuclear weapons program? Those missiles are fashioned out of cardboard and paper maiche. Yes, they have nuclear capabilities. Yes, they can make a mess out of South Korea. But if they do, China will step in and kick their ass. Militarily and economically. What China doesn’t want, is millions of North Korean refugees pouring across their border. The real threat of nuclear war lies on the red line drawn in the sands on the border between India and Pakistan. Both nuclear states. If the the M-80 Minnesota Limit detonates, that’s where it will happen. And of course, once you light up a nuke, others, perhaps Israel, which has the Bomb and everyone in Illustration by Brazillain Artist Marcos Vitor. the Middle East knows it, especially Iran, and the rest of the world, might just want to settle some old scores. Period. Don’t you just adore religion? The cause of all of mankind’s pain. Here’s a factoid. Except for philosophical spiritual practices, such as Buddhism which has no invisible deity living in the sky, all the opening acts of the world’s major religions begin with the appearance of a serpent. A reptilian creature that talks. Changing the course of human destiny from living in congress with nature, to abandoning it. To creating hate among members of the same species, laying down commands and orders, condemning those who pay no attention to its lethal demands to the fires of either a searing eternity spent hunched up inside a stainless steel

But god forbid the American media even mentions the impending nuclear annihilation of India and Pakistan. Doesn’t even hint that Israel is a nuclear power. Doesn’t bother telling the fucking truth about why Iran wants a nuclear device. Mutually Assured Destruction. It worked during the Cold War and will work now once every nation in the Middle East has the same hand of cards and chips on the same felt Baccarat table.

He fucking admits it! So turn away. There’s nothing we can do about it. There are no more people, men or women, in Congress who will put America first. They’re all hacks. I consider them to be nothing more than an elected criminal cabal obedient only to the elites who keep us imprisoned in the penitentiary of both thought, deed, action, and imagination. Now, take some time out from reading this, light up a fatty, take an impeccable bong hit, devour some edibles, do the dabba dabba do. Ready?

DID YOU KNOW? While THC is still illegal in the U.S. and most countries around the world, synthetic versions of the chemical have been legally prescribed for decades. Anxiety is a common side effect of marijuana. Yet many people use marijuana to relieve stress and anxiety.

THC is considered a “neuroprotectant,” meaning it can protect brain cells from damage caused by things like inflammation and oxidative stress.

While the accuracy of strain names is often debated, there’s a lesser known species of cannabis that exists. This species is known as Cannabis ruderalis. On Dec. 14 2016, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) made it clear that any marijuana-based extract is considered a Schedule I drug under federal law, including CBD oil and other types of CBD-rich extracts. THCA is typically converted to THC when exposed to heat, through a process called decarboxylation (or “decarbing”). However, when plants are stored, small amounts of the acid may be converted to THC over time.

We are happy to introduce you to Dr. Fire from BeanTown GreenTown as our featured caregiver for this issue. Check out his thoughts on using MMJ to replace Big Pharma along with some nice grow info and a boatload of patient compassion. What is your name?

Doctor Fire, Beantown Greentown.

How many years have you been a care giver? Officially, 2 years. Unofficially, 20+.

meds are helping them everyday is what motivates me. My personal reasons for being a caregiver, are also for my own issues. One doctor sent me to see another doctor who was part of the Wounded Warrior program. I didn’t serve in the military myself, but I met a lot of people who did. Turns out we had something in common. We had all been living with PTSD. It just seemed to all click into place. Cannabis saved my life, and all I wanted to do was help someone else. I worked my life in a pharmacy and never saw relief. Never saw people getting better. They all got more sick from pharmaceutical medication and eventually died. They all suffered and never felt relief. And I became so disgusted by these big pharmacy companies because I know their motivation was not to cure people. They don’t want to help heal people. They want people sick. They know the more suffering that continues the more money they make. They love money, not people. When it’s not “care”, it’s “money” because not one of those doctors, nurses or pharmacists would ever show up to work or even care about those sick people unless they’re getting paid. I’ve spent a lot of money and time giving away marijuana as medicine to sick people. My motivation is to build a business that is here to help people have access to more meds that are clean and natural.

State of your operation? MA.

What do you use for nutrients? Why that product? I use BioThrive by General Organics. We choose to grow organically to get the purest medicine and bring out the most raw plant flavor profile for each strain. We believe that growing with vegan nutrients helps us achieve that type of outcome.

What would you say are your favorite strains? Why? I grow a lot of strains. In the past year I have grown over 100 different strains, and bred my own. I now have about 25 original genetics taken from my favorite strains.

How many patients do you currently have? One. Well, two including myself.

What is your motivation for being a caregiver? I am motivated to help people. In our inner circle we have helped people with cancer relief, epilepsy, PTSD, and a number of other issues. Hearing their stories about how our

10

1000 Watts Magazine Series 6 | Issue 48

I have been growing a GSC that our crew calls “Gods Gift.” It’s beautiful, smells amazing and tastes like candy. I love this plant.

What do you find to be the most useful piece of equipment you have purchased and why? Honestly, it’s funny but something as simple as a twenty

five dollar collapsible hose has made a big difference in my space. Having the ability to drain a hose to shrink up into a small ball in a small space helps a lot.

What specific illness do your patients have? (please do not include names)

We won a contest and GoldLeaf LED’s sent us a set of lights for free. Its amazing the light penetration of these lights. Solistek also sent us a free 1000 watt double ended kit that rocks! In short we use it all and we will also be testing some lights from GST coming to us shortly. Liquid cooled LED’s... next phase / generation of lights for sure!

Our patients have a variety of illness that we help treat. It’s crazy to think you can help so many different issues with one plant, but it is so true. One patient has had epilepsy for years, and she was medicated with pills that did nothing. Cannabis helped her find relief from her symptoms and now she is pill free. One of our founding members suffered from PTSD and addiction, finding that cannabis was his last resort and gateway to freedom from pharmaceuticals. To name a few others quickly, PTSD, ANXIETY, INSOMNIA, DEPRESSION, ADD, ADHD and a bunch of others.

How do feel that you have helped your patients illness/ailment? I have been able to cure two stage 4 lung cancer patients, curb my own asthma as well as others, I have made great progress in stopping and shrinking pancreatic cancer and brain cancer, I have been able to help others as well as myself in getting thru with PTSD struggles, and I have been able to rejuvenate the liver as well.

Do you prefer to grow Indicas or Sativas? Why? We love to grow a mix, and most of our meds are hybrids. When you grow for patients, you can never have enough, soon enough. So we have been working with some quick flower strains. For example; Maple X Black Domina which is a 45 day flower. This plant is amazing... it has a great growth structure, amazing sent, and big, bulky buds. So our mission is to figure out a good cross with this plant and more pure sativa strains. One of our home grown Massachusetts strains coming out soon will be 617HAZE. We crossed Super Silver Haze with Maple. Our hope is a high sativa outcome with a quick flower. Still on the pheno hunt with that strain but its in the works and available soon enough.

What process do you use to grow? I use the same process everyone else does. Light, water, air... repeat. Lots of love and care. Lots of talking to and petting. Lots of research and time spent trying new things. It has been a long journey but its a labor of love.

What type of lighting do you use to grow? I use every light I can. I have really found appreciation for CMH, and some of the new technology behind LED lights.

Do you grow from seeds or clones? Why? I grow using both. We clone the plants we love, and keep them around. We also try new strains from seed. There is a benefit to both and you just need to find what works for you.

What are the most difficult challenges you have faced as a caregiver? The most difficult challenges have been growing enough within the legal limits. Our process and theory is to grow bigger, better plants that produce more. The challenge being that vegetative growth for a bigger plant is twice as long and takes twice the space. If the law says I can only grow 12 plants, well you better believe that plant is going to fill my room up. Check our Instagram page and see what one plant looks like with some extra veg growth at @beantown_ greentown.

Do you prefer hydro or soil? Why? Hahaha its always one of the biggest and most frequently asked questions. I have to admit I do both. I love growing in soil mixes like ProMix, but I also love the tenacity of DWC. Our crew does both well and we constantly push each other to try new things.

Do you flush your plants before you harvest? And if so, for how long?

Hellllllllz YES we do. Although, when growing with “veganic” nutrients, we have found that flushing is not as much of a

11

concern. There are no harsh chemicals and or additives in our mix, so when we flush we do so with the intention of feeding mostly water in our last week or so. The plant still needs something to live on and finish nicely so we find that most of that love is left in the natural environment of the soil. We haven’t heard any complaints about the taste, smell, and quality of our meds, so we will continue to do what we do.

How do you feel about compassion centers and dispensaries? Oh man.... With a heavy heart I will answer this question. Frankly, they are good and not so good. We constantly get requests for our product because it’s exactly what the “dispensaries” are not selling. Some of our fans hit us up with some of the most horrific stories. They tell us about buds from RMD’s that are tasteless, moldy, wet, and not cared for like they should be. Granted those are few and far between, but for the majority the locations are there to serve those in need, so its a hot topic that has a lot of people asking questions. In the end game, their job is technically to turn a profit and make money. Our end game is to provide the best product possible, and help cure people of their medical issues...More Weed Less Greed.

How to Ask Your Doctor About Medical Marijuana by Ellen Lenox Smith, Columnist

I

f you are considering medical marijuana as an alternative treatment for your chronic pain or other medical issues, you might be uncomfortable about approaching your doctor. There are so many stories circulating about patients being judged by their doctor or being labeled a “drug seeker” if they ask about marijuana, that many have chosen not to engage in a conversation they really wish to have. So, what can you do to make this as comfortable as possible? First, take the time to understand your state’s medical marijuana law. Over half the states have now legalized medical marijuana, but the rules are different for doctors and patients in each state. As of today, there are varying laws legalizing some form of medical marijuana in 30 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. Here in Rhode Island, residents can approach any doctor not only in Rhode Island but in the adjacent states of Connecticut and Massachusetts. If you have no success with the doctors that treat you, then we have a few locations in Rhode Island that you can turn to. These specialty doctors evaluate your medical issues and can sign you on. The one negative for using these facilities is that there is a fee that must be paid upfront and you must return yearly to confirm your continued need for medical marijuana. A regular doctor’s appointment only means a co-pay, depending on your insurance.

marijuana to see if cannabis has been used to treat it. Feel free to use our website to download articles about the successful use of marijuana with your condition. Dr. Stephen Corn has a wonderful website for doctors called “The Answer Page” where they can turn to for education on this topic and also submit questions they might have. I would encourage you to share the link with your doctor. Be sure to share with your doctor what medications you have already tried to help cope with your condition. Explain why they have not worked for you. Remind them that they are not writing a script or prescription for marijuana, but simply confirming you have one of your state’s qualifying conditions for it. Share with the doctor that you don’t expect them to guide you in how to administer marijuana, and that you will be educated at the dispensary or by a caregiver. I know it feels intimidating to consider asking your doctor to support you, but if this is a possible solution for your life, take the time to prepare for the meeting and go for it. There are risks involved with using marijuana without telling your doctor. They could be caught by surprise and discharge you if marijuana unexpectedly shows up in a drug test. That’s happened to some patients, even though the CDC specifically warns that “clinicians should not dismiss patients from care based on a urine drug test result because this could constitute patient abandonment and could have adverse consequences for patient safety.” I have turned my life around with a simple teaspoon of a marijuana-based oil at night -- and had to be convinced by my own doctor to give it a try! Once I realized what this was doing for my quality of life, I had to share my success with others. I hope that others may find this natural and safe option to be successful for them too.

Second, you want to approach a doctor you believe might be the most open to considering marijuana. How do you figure that out? You can consider asking other patients already in the program what success they had with your doctor or see if they know another doctor in the area who would be better. If you think your doctor might be open to this discussion, consider calling their office in advance and sound out where the doctor stands on marijuana before going in. If it sounds hopeless, then turn to a different doctor that treats you. Also, our compassion centers may also be able to guide you to a doctor willing to sign you on, if you have no luck with your own personal doctors. Third, when you finally approach the doctor, come to the appointment with some knowledge to share. Be ready to educate them. Google your health condition and medical

The Legal Weed Series: Canna Dinners Part 1

I’m Pretty Fondue Your Company… A Not So Cheesy Infused Meal by The Holi Collective by Mark M. Ward

F

oods infused with cannabis are becoming much more frequently consumed by a society now adopting or accepting cannabis culture. Not only is the amount of people who consume infused foods steadily rising, but also the types of infused foods that are available are starting to vary so profoundly that now even the pickiest palate can enjoy cannabis dinning. It may not be a surprise to some, but I am a connoisseur of sorts of infused foods and have had sampled everything from medicated candied bacon to infused freeze pops, but nothing could prepare my taste buds for what was in store. You may ask what type of edible could be so titillating and decadent that it may rank as my top canna-dining experience. The answer is simple… I’d say cheese. To be more specific and give proper due credit, not just cheese, but The Holi Collective’s perfectly infused French inspired fondue meal that after consuming, it would have even made a raging Napoleon relax, kick up his feet and exclaim “Hey man, se la vie”. As my colleague Marcus, of Marcus and Mark Edible Delights and I arrived at the beautiful newly developed home in a high end area of Massachusetts, I almost believed we had possibly gotten lost. Could such an affluent area play venue to a modern day cannabis event? As I ring the doorbell with this very question in mind, Chef Nic Florentino and his lovely wife Amy appeared to ease my mind and greet me with comfort into the beautiful abode. As I enter the home, I notice an ohso very familiar appearance of a huddled kitchen gathering in such jubilee and fine spirit that it could have only meant fantastic food was being prepared. Introductions are made and I come to find the patrons to this fine dining party are perfect representations of a modern cannabis community. Amongst us were upper middle class hard working, educated professionals such as career artists, teachers, medical professionals and business owners. Conversation was starting slowly but constant, as party goers were stating their experiences and familiarity levels with cannabis and edibles, mixed with a few humorous related anecdotes. We all got to know each other better

14

1000 Watts Magazine Series 6 | Issue 48

as we sipped the served refreshments of nonalcoholic cannabis infused blueberry pomegranate cranberry cocktails finished with a twist of lime that Amy had graciously been serving as Nic concocted his artistry in the kitchen. Discourse started to get lighter around the room and the private function was becoming more and more comfortable sharing exchange and story with Marcus and I whom were merely, but two strangers at the door just moments ago. The night continued with a much lighter, almost familiar tone of family and friends as infused cheese fondue was served in communal table centered crocks and indulged in at once. The sauce was a Swiss and Gruyere and it was skillfully prepared and thoughtfully paired with The Holi Collective’s garlic poppy canna-bread, infused seasoned chicken meat balls, fresh broccoli and slightly spicy potato cubes. By the time the cheese was low… the group was smiling, content and had lost all unnecessary reservations. I’m actually pretty sure I had witnessed a teacher gradually slide over a fondue bowl closer in order to hoard for himself. And then… there was dessert, which consisted of infused melted chocolate sauce paired with infused raspberry and

infused pistachio sugar cookies, organic bananas, mangos, apple and pineapple. At this point you could imagine the smiles and praise given to the brilliant collective couple, as the beautifully presented dessert was served and enjoyed throughout the room. The mmm’s and ahh’s were numerous and every one was meant whole heartily as they were exclaimed. New friends were made, old friends were made closer and full bellies and a warm vibes were had by all that night. So why, you may ask is this one of my favorite canna-dining experiences? I say it was the friendship, contentment and cheese… served on a plate by The Holi Collective.

“Jack the Ripper” Terp Sap

from Spoiled Patients by DJ Stone

Yes sir! You will spoiled too if you dab “Jack the Ripper.” First, let me tell you a little about Spoiled Patients, the company that makes the “terp sap”. Rob White has been on the cutting edge of oil for many years now. He was first introduced to me by Hash Man about 4 or 5 years ago. In 2013 Spoiled Patients won the Dab-aDoo event in San Francisco, and have claimed many more awards since then. Now, Jack the Ripper. Terp Sap is basically terpenes and THC and is extremely sugary. The smell of this Jack the Ripper is very pungent and reminds me of a Lemon Jack. Looking through my scope, it looks like rich golden sugar. It tested at 80% THC ….absolutely amazing. Like I said, you will be spoiled too! It has a very strong citrus flavor and at 2 dabs, I am really feeling the effects. All I can say is ask for it by name. I bet if you try any of the flavors, you will be blown away as well.

U.Nique Interview by Nurse Heather Manus, RN.

N

ique Pichette, as a Registered Nurse, when did you learn about the Endocannabinoid system? I had never even heard of the endocannabinoid system until I was fighting my second battle with breast cancer.

Heather Manus, RN. Founder of Nature Nurse.

Since neither of us learned about the 12th body system during nursing school… How did you 1st learn about and begin understanding the importance of the eCB system? Once I started using cannabis as a patient, I wanted to learn more

“Nursing and medical students currently study the 11 human body systems in detail, but rarely ever hear of the 12th system. The Endocannabinoid (eCB) System is a vital receptor signaling system in the human body that is responsible for achieving and maintaining balance or homeostasis within all other body systems. The eCB system’s purpose is to keep our body and mind balanced, healthy, and resistant of dis-ease.” about cannabis as a nurse. I started searching ways to learn more, and I found information about a cannabis conference called Patients Out of Time (POT). I was actually directed there by Nurse Marcie Cooper, when I found her during my search and was intrigued by her connection to holistic and cannabis nursing. She informed me of the cannabinoid therapeutics conference being held in West Palm Beach, Florida. So, I registered and attended my first scientific cannabis conference in 2015. This is where I met you Cannabis Nurse Heather, and you became my ‘Tom Brady’ of Cannabis Nursing after attending a class where I heard you teach.

“It’s not about getting high. It’s about harvesting wisdom that nature gives us and using it wisely.” -Dr. Oz cannabis, rather than something else? Cannabis was a natural option. The medical system had put me on so many prescribed medications in debilitating doses that in the past it had gotten to the point where I was on disability while trying to treat the severe depression, anxiety, and eating disorder I was experiencing. I decided that didn’t work for me and I was not going to take that route again. Actually, everything that I was starting to learn about cannabis as medicine, it appeared to not have many significant adverse side effects. I gave it a shot, and it helped. What is your current maintenance routine that increases your health & well-being? After beating breast cancer for a 2nd time, I now use cannabinoids as part of my overall healthy lifestyle and daily maintenance routine. I have tried many different flower strains, edibles, tinctures, oils, rosin; but for me, I find that Nature Nurse products and the micro-dosing technique has helped me take my medication without being impaired. Why is it important for you not to be impaired?

Nurse Nique Pichette, MSN, RN - two time breast cancer survivor, ex-US Marine.

“As nurses and educators we never know whose lives will be touched by our sharing of knowledge and information. I’ve been educating since 2010 and continue to learn more & more about the eCB system, cannabis, cannabinoid science and therapeutics. Like you, Nurse Nique, my biggest “ah-ha” moments come after attending conferences where I find myself in the room with people who know things I haven’t learned yet. Each conference attended or new stunning research article read, is a simple reminder that we do not know what we don’t know, until we learn it.”

I cannot be impaired because I do not feel comfortable being out in public like that. I also work in nursing and I cannot be impaired at work or while I am taking care of my patients. I am very sensitive to THC and I become paranoid very easily when the THC level is increased. CBD helps reduce the effects of THC, and I prefer to use CBD during the day. I also work out often lifting weights. I am unable to workout in public under the influence of high THC because it actually enhances my insecurities and makes me feel like everyone can tell I am impaired. I just prefer to keep my mind clear. Is there a standardized cannabinoid therapeutics protocol for current or post-cancer patients?

What compelled you to choose cannabis as an option? I saw a picture taken with my son while I was going through my cancer treatments. I looked emaciated and frail, weighing 111lbs. This was shocking and revealing to me, because in 2005 I was hospitalized for anorexia nervosa, where upon admission I weighed 93lbs and thought I was beautiful. Seeing this picture with my son sparked the “Fight to Win” in me. I knew in that moment that I had U.Nique beauty and purpose. Not only would I never see the inside of a psychiatric hospital again, cancer was not going to beat me, no matter what. I heard that cannabis could help with nausea during cancer treatments, so I became a legal cannabis patient so I could access medicine through the Rhode Island medical marijuana program. How did your experience with cancer lead you to

I would have to say that I am not totally certain. What I can Nurses Nique and Heather fighting the good fight together.

say though is that in my work with patients, I have found that individualized dosing, and nourishing each person’s endocannabinoid system independently, is a much safer, more effective, and pleasant way to introduce cannabis as medicine. It’s a more comfortable journey. For example, if your doctor started you on 30mg Percocet, you would most likely become ill, and sleep indefinitely. That’s why medicine is prescribed in lower doses and raised over time as needed. However, I’ve also worked with a caregiver that dosed cancer patients alike when it came to cannabis. The caregiver did use a THC/CBD combination, but the THC for some patients was too high and they couldn’t tolerate such significant doses. Since starting my 30 day challenge with Nature Nurse, I’ve been able to feel the unwanted side effects from too much THC and was able to easily correct it because of my micro-dosing technique. “Nurses understand the efficacy of individualized patient care and the benefits that emerge from patient empowerment regarding self-titrated medications. Every patient is unique and each have different levels of physical and mental activity, nutritional intake, family/ work/life stressors, attitudes toward health and overall views of medicine. Cannabis has the ability to assist in creating balance within the whole person; mind, body, and spirit.”

covered by insurance companies, and patients will have the ability, within reason, to grow their own. Education for the medical hierarchy is necessary. Nurses and doctors need to become educated, and knowledge of the endocannabinoid system must be accepted into nursing programs and medical programs. What do you wish you would have known as a new nurse that you know now? I wish I would have realized the importance of nature in healing the human body. The ocean has seen me cry, felt my tears, and heard me laugh all the way to the bottom of my soul. Complementary therapy is an essential part of the healing journey. To truly help heal and care for another human being you must incorporate the mind, body and spirit… and do it with the least amount of harm as possible. There are many pharmaceuticals that have multiple side effects. It is nice to have options to give patients choices to be able to choose the medication with the least risk and greatest benefit ratio. Nature Nurse recognizes the Endocannabinoid (eCB) system and the importance of systematic balance to achieve and maintain health. Nature Nurse Products are intelligently & intuitively formulated to support the eCB system and encourage systematic homeostasis.

Which products, methods of administration, and cannabinoid ratios work best for you? The current foundation of my protocol is approximately 20mg of CBD and 5-7.5mg of THC in the form of Cocoa Cannabinoids from Nature Nurse. Each cube is 2.5 mg so I’m able to adjust my dosing throughout the day. I’ve also found the Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) that was increased by chemotherapy is not helped by THC use during the day. In general, I cannot use THC until nighttime, because even in small doses it seems to scatter or disorganize my thoughts. The 40mg 1:1 transdermal Synergy patch from Nature Nurse is the only medication that I currently use consistently, in combination with oral doses of THC and CBD Cocoa Cannabinoids. It has been very educational attempting to micro dose my way to health and learning more about my own 24 hour need to sustain a healthy endocannabinoid system. I take approximately 15-20mg CBD and 5-10mg THC Cocoa Cannabinoids per day. I also smoke at night sometimes. It is my pleasure dose, a way to relax from the day and sleep well too. I enjoy smoking flower in the evening, but it has to be an Indica and high in CBD. I get anxious with the wrong strain. The effectiveness of inhaling cannabis causes a different high-mindedness and I become very philosophical. It helps me write and helps me reach deep inside and learn more about the insecurities that have made parts of my past feel difficult. How do you see cannabis playing a future role within the healTHCare system? If my vision of this plant comes to fruition, it will be part of the choices as medicine in conventional medicine. It will be

On the Front Lines with a Cannabis Nurse by Marissa Fratoni, RN

H

ave you ever been in the presence of someone having a severe flashback to a war that was fought over forty years ago? Let me paint a picture for you. I’m visiting a patient because he has had a really bad week and may need to be admitted to hospital if his mental status doesn’t improve soon. My patient is a very big guy at about six feet, four inches tall. He weighs well over two hundred fifty pounds. He is cowering in fear of being shot at in a far away jungle. The issue is that the jungle is in his head. To keep himself “safe” he is currently hiding behind a couch that he’s moved to the center of his living room. His wife has witnessed episodes like this too often in their long marriage. Tears stream down her face as she tries to wash the dishes. As if everything that’s happening in this moment is normal. As if washing the dishes makes everything happening in this moment normal. “He’ll be fine in a few minutes,” she manages to squeak out, “he usually comes to when he realizes he’s behind our furniture. I’m not sure what triggered him today. It doesn’t take much. This is the third or fourth time he’s ended up

22

1000 Watts Magazine Series 6 | Issue 48

having a flashback in the last couple days.” Sure enough, within a couple of minutes, the patient comes back to the present. Audibly exhausted, he calls for his wife. She leaves a dirty dish in the sink, shuts the water off, and opens a kitchen cabinet. She removes a small lock box from the cabinet and turns to move into the living room. “You’re okay. You’re okay.” The patient’s wife repeats this mantra as she moves to the other side of the couch. Her husband is soaked with sweat and hoarse from this episode. Together, they plop down on the couch and take turns sighing deeply. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, an estimated 31% of male Vietnam War veterans suffer from PTSD. My patient in this story is a Vietnam veteran. He was drafted, plucked from his home in upstate New York when he was barely nineteen years old. He was shot at in the deep jungles of Vietnam. His young friends, mostly twentysomethings, were killed. He was one of five survivors in a platoon of over forty men. And he relived this nightmare

nearly every day depending on his stress level. Beyond this, he didn’t sleep for more than a few hours every night if he slept at all. His wife fiddled with the box and opened the lid as she handed it to her husband. He took out a small pipe and a medicine bottle. Out of the medicine bottle came a pinch of bright green cannabis. The pungent aroma filled the room before my patient even started smoking it. “We’ve decided that this is better than Ativan, and all those other drugs that he’s been prescribed.” My patient’s wife explained to me as my patient lit his pipe. He took three puffs and exhaled the smoke away from where myself and his wife were sitting. Within a few minutes, my much more relaxed patient explained some of the horrors that he had experienced while serving his country, “I can hear them screaming sometimes when I’m just going about my day. One of my brothers took four bullets in his back. He died in my arms, begging to go home. Some days, not an hour goes by when I don’t think about him.” My patient continued to qualify his cannabis use to me as if I was just another healthcare professional about to pass judgement, “I’m supposed to be stopping this stuff. I have a substance abuse problem. I shouldn’t be doing this, but it’s the only thing that helps.” “If it helps, then that’s what matters.” I said. I had the full attention of my patient and his wife now. Apparently, they had very little experience with a nurse who would express anything remotely positive about cannabis use. I went on to ask my patient and his wife about his cannabis use. I found out that my patient had smoked cannabis for decades. Ironically, he started smoking cannabis in Vietnam. He was consistently told by the VA Hospital that he needed to quit. Subsequently, he was diagnosed with cannabis-use disorder. Otherwise, he didn’t use tobacco, drink alcohol, or use any illicit substances. When he did quit smoking cannabis, his flashbacks would become a regular occurrence. His insomnia would worsen. He would become so angry, irritable, and frustrated that he would willingly stay in a motel up the street from his home. His wife said that he would never hurt anyone, but he couldn’t be around anyone while in that state. In fact, he lost several jobs because of his mental and emotional distress. “He doesn’t get high. His goal is not to get high. He just wants to feel better,” my patient’s wife was now advocating for her husband. “I used to have a problem with this stuff because it stinks, and I didn’t want our kids to know that their father used marijuana. But he’s tried everything else. And this is what works best!” When asked how cannabis helps with his PTSD, my patient readily answered, “It helps me to forget for a while. If the trauma bubbles up, I can stay here. Like here in the present, not caught up in my head. I can deal with it better. I don’t have a panic attack. And I don’t feel the rage and anger. Some days I have to smoke three or four times just to feel normal.”

His wife chimed in, “He didn’t smoke at all this week. Marijuana helps him sleep too. But he hasn’t slept in at least four nights. He’s trying to do what his doctor wants him to do, but I think it’s a bad idea. It’s just not worth it honey!” My patient’s wife was now speaking directly to her husband. “Please don’t go off of your medicine again!” “I agree with your wife, sir. You should continue to use your medicine. I think you can stay out of the hospital if you continue to use cannabis to treat your symptoms.” I stated with confidence. “My only suggestions — you should work with a physician who understands therapeutic cannabis and PTSD. And make sure you obtain cannabis from a reputable source, such as a medical marijuana dispensary.” My patient and his wife could get on board with that plan. And I could add their story to my constantly growing list of anecdotal evidence for the therapeutic use of cannabis. A few days later, I followed up with my patient. He was doing well, using his cannabis in the morning and before bed. He had slept relatively well, and was searching for a recommending physician who could help him gain access to the medical marijuana dispensaries in our state. Before we got off the phone, he thanked me for not judging him, for encouraging him to continue to use the remedy that helped him most. I could hear the relief in his voice. In that moment, I realized that I made a positive impact in this patient’s life. As a nurse, I always hope to do so. With this patient and his family, I had succeeded. Gradus, J. L., DSc, MPH. New England Veterans Alliance A Haven for Veterans by Ellen Taylor Brown

V

eterans make up about seven percent of the United States population. Of that percentage, we are losing approximately 22 veterans per DAY to being over prescribed. The department of veteran’s affairs is federally funded and because cannabis is a schedule one substance, doctors can’t prescribe it or talk about using cannabis as an alternative medicine. The repercussions of this are clear by the staggering 22 per day statistic. Some states don’t report the numbers of over doses and suicides. Please keep that in mind. We don’t even know the full extent of the irreparable damage being done to our veteran community. Where are veterans to go that want an alternative? Where can they find reputable information? More than that, where can they find a support system? Here in New England, we are fortunate to have NEVA. The New England Veterans Alliance, which has been a beacon of hope for those struggling with the opiate epidemic and a haven for those seeking information, provides a sense of community and camaraderie that a lot of veterans miss once they get out of the service. It started with Derek Cloutier and Sean Judge who are now the cofounders of NEVA. Both served in war, have seen combat and both have unique stories of their struggles with being over prescribed and finding that using cannabis instead was life saving for them. It’s given them back their families, allowed them to treat themselves and it gave them a mission to help others and lead by example.

NEVA was founded a little over a year and ago and just like the military, it’s members have been motivated and dedicated to spreading the word and making their voices heard. The non-profit organization is open to any and everyone who wants to help the cause of empowering veterans. They have an optional membership that gives members discounts with organizations NEVA is affiliated with such as Pot Pocket, the Healing Rose and more! They also work in partnerships with cannabis schools in New England such as the Northeastern Institute of Cannabis,

24

Sensimillia Seminars and Homegrown Health Care of Maine to offer veterans discounted or even free classes. They work hard to make sure they can offer veterans everything they need to be successful. Not only does this organization strive to work with like minded groups, it works with local legislation to change laws that would allow safer access to cannabis. NEVA Veteran educating another veterans on Roots What is so Organics nutrients line 2016. Photo: NEVA. incredible about the members is that they are proud to say “I’m a veteran and I’m apart of NEVA”. Members have been found in every state house in New England testifying in support of cannabis reform. NEVA members were at the New Hampshire state house testifying in support of posttraumatic stress disorder being added as a qualifying condition to their medical marijuana program and in February of this year PTSD was added. In Massachusetts, NEVA members testified in support of Bill H. 1050, an act relative to a medical marijuana pilot program also known as the Crosby Project (named after James Crosby) who is a marine corps veteran. This bill would allow veterans to have a pilot alternative wellness center in Massachusetts called the Veterans Alternative Health and Wellness Center where they could get the cannabis and education they need. This center would serve as a haven for veterans in Massachusetts. If it passes, the Crosby Project will show the state how beneficial this program could be and it will be duplicated and implemented STATE WIDE! Massachusetts hasn’t decided yet on the Crosby Project. Their activism doesn’t stop at the state house. You can find members and supporters of NEVA on panels and advocating across the country! In April, the High Times Cannabis Cup held its first cup in Nevada, where they held a veteran’s panel. The New England Veterans Alliance was there in full force making sure they were avid about veterans leading by example and showed this by smoking on stage that there is no stigma to cannabis use. Members have also spoken at the Boston Freedom Rally Extravaganja and anywhere where

people are willing to listen to the testimonials of veterans trying to be educating others with facts and life experiences. September 11, 2001 was sixteen years ago. During this time, many of us have served or had loved ones serve. Some have passed away due to war, others to the opiate epidemic. If you know someone who could benefit from education or interaction with other veterans, don’t hesitate to reach out to the New England Veterans Alliance. Their mission is to serve those that have served our country in finding alternative routes of enrichment though community, cannabis and commitment to others.

Mary’s Nutritionals Elite Topical Compound

A

ll I can say is sometimes I really enjoy the perks of my job! When I was given the opportunity to review the Mary’s Nutritionals Elite Topical Compound, I was psyched! First of all, I love all of the new ways that CBD and hemp are being used in consumer products, especially topical products and other health, beauty and nutritional items. There are so many amazing uses that are helping people in ways we may have never expected. Now...let’s talk about Mary’s Nutritionals specifically. The Elite Topical Compound is recommended for tender

I started using the compound on my lower back as well as on my shoulders to alleviate chronic pain that I have in those areas on a daily basis. The first thing I noticed was that it was very firm. It definitely has more of a waxy texture than that of a lotion or cream. I actually liked that since it made the jar last much longer. A lot goes a long way. It does absorb quickly and does not leave a greasy feeling on your skin. The second thing I noticed was the slight sensation of heat where I applied it. It was similar to an Icy Hot salve or patch, but much less intense. It was just the right amount of heat. I would however suggest washing your hands after applying it, since it may irritate your eyes or highly sensitive areas of your skin. The third thing to note was the amazing scent. It contains Beeswax, Mango Butter, Safflower Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Sesame Seed Oil, Jojoba Seed Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil, Olive Oil, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Menthol, Oleic Acid, OptiPhen, Natural Fragrance. Wow! The 1 oz. jar contains 100 mg. Hemp Extract. I quickly became a fan! I used it twice a day (morning

25

and before bed) and I found that it really loosened up my trouble spots. If you have back pain, you know how tense and tight that can make you. For me personally, twice a day was helpful. In the morning I felt relief to start the day ahead and in the evening it helped me sink into bed fully relaxed and extremely comfortable, which is very unusual for me because of my back and shoulder pain. I actually could feel the inflammation going away. I have been using the Elite Topical Compound for several weeks now and have also created a few more Mary’s Nutritionals fans along the way! Two close friends tried it after a grueling day of planting and yard work and said it was amazing (but I knew that). One more thing to note: Mary’s takes pride in using only 100% organic, locally grown hemp flower from Colorado. The flower is sourced from select farmers that produce higher yields and better potency than overseas farmers. If you need a go-to “ointment” or salve for what ails you, I would highly recommend giving this a try. All round, it is effective, lasts long, smells great, feels AWESOME and is all natural too! Oh, and did I mention that it REALLY works? What else could you ask for? Check out the Mary’s Nutritionals website for more info on this and their other natural products. Also, check out Donny’s review of Mary’sw transdermal patch in this issue too! Thanks Mary’s Nutritionals for making my days a little easier and my nights more restful!

Mary’s Nutritionals Transdermal CBD Elite Patch Synergy on a Sticker by Donny Adelman

Mary’s Nutritionals Transdermal CBD Elite Patch is a product that helps patients like me get the CBD kick to the system that’s most beneficial for health and wellness. I generally did not use a CBD product until recently, when I learned with THC AND CBD I MAXIMIZE ALL EFFECTS OF MY MEDICINE. The patch itself measures roughly about 2”x2”, the CBD is hemp based and for a patch actually stuck pretty well. It is a moderate dose at 10mg but for me was enough to get more from my medicine. I tried using this in conjunction with using a strain ECG by Freedom Terps with 34% THC-a. The THC, yes, helped with the pain itself but without CBD the medical benefits only go so far. When I used the patch, it offered great relief from my nerve pain and helped so much with my gastroparesis, I actually was able to eat BBQ! I believe as some do, that CBD and/or 1:1 flower is not what’s best for my medical needs. This patch bridges that gap where pain relief is most important but other maladies still have significant effects. I believe Mary’s got this right and I would only like to see higher dose options in the future for the needs of all patients. I would strongly recommend this product for those suffering from neurological and gastro problems, child patients and for anyone not interested in mixing CBD flower with their THC flower. Also this product is great as it helps get medicine when inhaling is not possible or necessary.

Getting to know the crew from

Beantown Greentown

W

hen you think of Boston’s cannabis community, you can’t overlook the Beantown Greentown crew. This team of medical patients operate autonomously, but share one common goal for making the metro a more cannabis friendly “green” environment. This like minded community of cultivators all share one Instagram handle (@beantown_greentown) and post regularly about growing tips, different strains, cloning, and often about cannabis culture in general. Check in on one day and you could see a few different personal legal grow ops. Stay tuned in on Instagram and you just may be able to untangle the web they have woven, but it won’t be that easy.

cannabis. “We see it as being ‘trapped in the closet’ (or grow room), secretly doing something borderline “illegal”, but its NOT. We need to stand up for our rights to grow whatever we want, wherever we want, whenever we want.” This is a bold statement for your average Joe that is cautious about growing even one plant, but not for this team.

Beantown Greentown made its official launch at the 2017 NECANN Tradeshow this past month at the Hynes Convention Center, and they came with a splash. The team describes the launch as “a way to get out in front of people and carry the mission forward.” And that splash was more like a cannon ball. The BTGT booth was stacked with Hats, Hoodies and T-Shirts under a fully branded tent. The crew brought the fun with a custom spin wheel handing out free gifts to anyone that supported their cause. “Its about giving back to the community. We love what we do and we want to share that knowledge.” After the smoke cleared from the show the team received a write up in High Times online that put them front and center in the region. “Its humbling. We had no idea things would be this intense and up lifting. We are honored and blessed”. You know you did something right to gain that type of credentials fresh out of the gate. Their home grown slogan is “More Weed Less Greed”, which stands as their preamble for what they wish to accomplish in the next decade. The team wishes to defend the home growers of Massachusetts by breaking down the barriers and stigmatism associated with growing

Since the group can remember they were guerrilla growers, planting seeds in public spaces, paths less traveled, and fields where no one would care to walk. “We didn’t care where we grew, it was fun to just watch it grow. One of my most fond memories was dropping a clone in our local gas station. They watered it, and it grew to be a bush and eventually it was chopped down.” To this team it was an experiment that is paying off dividends now. With a combined 40 years of growing experience this group is producing some amazing results. Results that many of them are shocked with themselves. One member spoke about the results he benefits from personally after overcoming opiate addiction and PTSD. “Without my medicine, I don’t know where I would be right now. I may never have overcome my pill problem.” This is true for many people who benefit from cannabis, and that is exactly what Beantown Greentown is trying to accomplish. “One of the people I gift to has given up their epilepsy pharmaceuticals because of our medicine. That’s why we do what we do.” The two founding members of the group are unique individuals that have been long time friends. They both have been reunited on this venture to share a love for cannabis and its health benefits. Take a long time pharmaceutical technician and cross that with a contemporary marketing guru and you get the genetic make up for this start up. “It’s not about the money for us, because if it was I wouldn’t give up the pharmaceutical business to grow medical marijuana, although the two are now somewhat symbiotic we don’t

view it that way.” Finding the core values is what drives the team to work hard at their goals. “Its our mission. Marketing to the cannabis culture is tricky, but its also basic. Just give the people what they want... no bullshit.” As business picks up for the group, they started to bring in key members with real positive attributes. Two new members are first time growers, but also add key elements of electrical engineering and veteran status. “Our two new members are key to our progress. If we have electrical issues we know who to call. One of our biggest core beliefs is helping veterans so having a service member patient involved helps us reach that group.” The group continues to search out and add new key members as things evolve. They view themselves as a community of like minded people in search of a common goal. The future is bright for these “ganjapreneurs”, and they don’t seem to be slowing down. On 4/20/17 they launched their website and online store front. In early May they just released their clone share club dubbed “The IVXX CLUB”. Join the membership and you will be growing all year round with the latest and most sought after strains. “We wanted to extend our community exponentially. The only way we saw that working was with a true growers clone share club.” The club is offering some of the old school favorites like Grand Daddy Purple, White Widow and Sour D, while also offering some of their own home breed specialties like JWAY (Skywalker X NL), and 617HAZE (Super Silver Haze x Maple) all genetics bred by the BTGT crew right here in the Boston area. Club members have the benefit of access to grow info, discounts on supplies, and club gear,

Beantown Greentown plans on hitting up a full schedule of events, festivals, and cannabis cups to carry their mission forward. They host a online community with a blog catered toward growing tips, strain development, and recipes for medical consumption. “Any way we can spread our mission, we will. And we will be happy to help anyone.” For more updates on Beantown Greentown check out www. beantowngreentown.com, follow them on Instagram (@beantown_ greentown), or on the blog site (beantowngreentowncom.wordpress.com) Also stay pulled into your 1000 Watts Magazine for special Beantown Greentown contributor write ups and growing tips. “Stay Green Beantown” - BTGT

MASTER BONG’S

BIGGEST HITS!

by Master Bong

S

ummer is fast approaching and on the way which means that there is a plethora and abundance of fresh fruit. One of my favorite fruits is a strawberry. I remember being a little kid and just how juicy and flavorful they tasted. The texture was amazing and that bright vibrant red just sucked you right in! So, of course as I continued in my smoking career I had to make a strawberry pipe or two! Well the other day when I was chilling with Pez Bros. up in Mendo at their facility, they had some fat juicy strawberries that we were munching on after a session... and an idea popped right out of my fro...

TIME TO ENJOY!

So if you are all about that organic life and love having and trying new experiences in life, then I feel that making the double barrel strawberry raspberry pipe is a perfect addition to your smoking repertoire this summer or anytime of the year that you can get your hands on a strawberry or two! I know that we had an amazing time when we created this and the homies over at Pez Bros. had never smoked out of a double barrel strawberry raspberry pipe before so it was a new experience for them as well. Life is all about new experiences and that is one of the things that I enjoy most about all these creative smoking devices. Remember, whatever the mind of man can conceive and bring himself to believe, he can achieve! Stay Blessed & Highly Favored... PEACE, Master Bong

I had the idea to create a strawberry and raspberry pipe and smoke flower from one raspberry bowl, plus a little rosin out of the other raspberry bowl at the same damn time!!! Steps for making your strawberry/raspberry double barrel pipes... 1. PICK A HUGE STRAWBERRY. 2. GET TWO SMALL/ MEDIUM RASPBERRIES. 3. USE A TOKER POKER TO BORE OUT STRAWBERRY. 4. PLACE RASPBERRIES IN BORED HOLES ON SIDES OF STRAWBERRY. 5. PACK WEED AND ROSIN
