10 DESIGN LEADS THE DESIGN FOR ANOTHER BRIDGE IN CHINA - THE ISLAND
Following the success of the award winning Zhuhai Infinity Loop Bridge, 10 DESIGN in collaboration with Buro Happold, were approached by the client (Wide Horizons) to design the 125m span bridge which connects the 2 major phases of a large new township in Chengdu, China.
One of the key design opportunities is that the bridge links waterfront parklands at diagonally opposite sides of the bridge. To link these parks while avoiding vehicular traffic we have created an undulating ramp that drops below the vehicular section of the bridge and then wraps up and around a naturally landscaped island in the middle of the waterway.

This island not only provides a rest stop but also allows a more intimate relationship with the water as people can step off the bridge and walk through the landscaped island to sit by the water’s edge. The sculpted structure of the ramp touches the water only at the turning points, appearing to skip across the water so that the arched spans of the ramp create a series of framed

views from the shore line of the island below, while also allowing pleasure boats to moor along the island’s shoreline. A feature waterfall at the edge of the ramp provides visual interest from the coastline while also providing background ambience to reduce the impact of the noise of the vehicular traffic above.

The phasing of the island allows pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy a full view to the adjacent park whilst enhancing privacy for the residents of the nearby villas on the other side of the Island.
