XIANGZHOU CULTURAL CENTRE Zhuhai, China
After designing the AIA award winning Dalian Library, 10 DESIGN have been commissioned to lead the design for a prominent cultural centre for the Xiangzhou Town in Zhuhai.

XIANGZHOU CULTURAL CENTRE is a 50,000 square metre facility for housing art and cultural exhibitions located in the heart Zhuhai China. The cultural centre acts as a bridge between two historical villages dating from the Sung Dynasty. The design is intended to make maximum advantage of the site position, orientation towards the surroundings and micro climate of Zhuhai to create a sustainable built environment that is unique but still deeply connected with the city. The aim of the project is to design a smart building with high level of flexibility in housing various functions that operates within different time schedules.

The Site The project seeks to blur the line between the natural and cultivated landscapes. The site location forms the edge between the two ancient villages and a large beautiful mountain park. The building is split into two volumes creating a large outdoor garden for the community and to maintain and strengthen a direct connection to the park. The split in the building also helps to natural catch and channel summer breezes from the mountain park into the outdoor spaces.
open onto the internal garden space, providing a hub for community activitiesfurther strengthening the cultural center as a part of the community. Visitors to the center will be given tours of the local villages. The cultural center will begin construction in late 2013 and is anticipated to be opened to the public in 2015.
Current on the site the villagers use a covered bus stop and a dark tunnel underpass as an outdoor market and impromptu gathering space. Each village has a central temple and community building which are intertwined with a series of outdoor spaces. Our design pulls from this culture of outdoor living and supports it by creating a large outdoor courtyard space linked closely linked with the internal functions. A large public library and theatre

Concept & Approach The design process was inspired by Zhuhai’s ancient Chinese garden pavilion, the harmonious interweaving of the built environment and landscape element, nature and Zhuhai’s local culture when designing Zhuhai Xiangzhou Cutural Centre. To allow maximum planning flexibility, the building is split into two volumes; one volume housing the gallery and teaching functions and the other containing the library and various workshops. This strategy allows various functions operating in different time schedules to operate effectively independent of one another.

The interaction between two volumes that sits harmoniously on the site creates large outdoor public spaces that have an open view towards the hills on the south side of the site. A large public library and theater open onto internal garden space, providing a hub for community activities and a space for outdoor activities such as outdoor exhibition, farmers’ market and performance art. The volumes are also positioned strategically to avoid over-shadowing between the two forms and the plaza thus exposing the public plaza to southern sun.

One volume facing the street, containing the teaching functions and gallery, has an elongated form so as to maximize exposure towards the south and northern sun for all the classrooms and galleries and simultaneously minimize the heat gain caused by east and west sunlight. This form also creates a sound barrier that protects the outdoor public space.

The other volume, sitting on the southern side of the site and containing the library and various workshops, has an even shape that enables high degree of interior space flexibility. This way, the building can easily be divided into various rooms with different dimensions catering to different activities.

Façade Design
The façade is inspired by the traditional landscape paintings of the Sung dynasty. As in the paintings which are activated by the motion of streams and clouds, the building’s form is articulated by its internal circulation patterns. The main window on the front façade is a reaction to the internal escalators taking visitors up to the gallery spaces. One of the main factors controlling the design was a very tight budget. We kept the massing simple and used minimal glass to keep the budget in balance. We also selected the same local stone for the façade that was originally used in the adjacent villages- to both save cost and to integrate the new geometries with the old village structure.
