Letter from the Editor Last year I was extremely privileged and overawed to see my mother care for my sister whilst she was in hospital. My sister was recovering from a serious illness and had lost her memory, her ability to walk, talk and fend for herself. One weekend, I had come to visit my sister but I had not anticipated how moved I would become as my mother fed my sister breakfast. My sister looked up to the woman feeding her and accepted each mouthful of food. I had not been prepared or this lasting impression that still moves me today. It was such a personal moment, a private moment, a moment that I could but would not capture as an image. But etched forever in my mind is how strong a mother’s love can be. It is a love eternal.

Interior Design tips. Our Nouvelle Cuisine section will tempt you with a Mother’s Day inspired mocktail and cocktail and brunch canapes. We also invite you to Indulge the Basalt and inspire you start walk with our Follow my Footsteps article. Like any journey, Hepburn is not a solo adventure. Influencial Women in Leadership

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth Jacqueline Hodges

Whether you are a royalist or a republican we must respect and admire, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as one of the most iconic leaders in world history. The Queen now in her 95th year is the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch, the world’s oldest living monarch, the world’s longest-reigning current monarch, the longest-serving female head of state in the world, and the longest-serving head of state. These mark a longevity of reign that may never be surpassed. Yet, even today the Queen remains as dutiful in her service to the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth realms as when she was upon her coronation at age 27.

“I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service.”

12 | Hepburn

Her coronation heralded a New Elizabethan Age. Young and glamorous, and progressive, Queen Elizabeth embraced change to help redefine the future of the monarchy. Her reign has changed from an empire of 70 nations to a Commonwealth of just 16 nations to which she dedicates her heart and soul.

A transition born of necessity from a decision reflecting that of a true leader. Although the monarchs are officially exempted from paying taxes, in 1992 The Queen volunteered to start paying both income and capital gains tax. She also opened both Buckingham and Windsor Castles to the public to assist in financing their maintenance. We should add here that yes, The Queen was a working mother, and the first since Queen Victoria in 1857.

“I know of no single formula for success. But over the years I have observed that some attributes of leadership are universal and are often about finding ways of encouraging people to combine their efforts, their talents, their insights, their enthusiasm and their inspiration to work together.”

Trends for Mothers Day Kristina Mazalova

W

hether you are best friends or barely on speaking terms one day you want to be together is Mother’s Day. This special day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. It’s a day to remember the little things, the cut lunches, the sports days and end of season carnivals, the music lessons and end of year concerts, the bruised knee and the bruised teenage heart. It’s a day to celebrate your Mother, how great your Mother is and how much you truly love her. If you live just around the corner lucky you, you probably see your mum every other day. If you are separated by miles or even overseas, you may speak to each other every week by phone or share some facetime. No matter how far from each other you are, it is important to remember this day, share your family memories, and make time to celebrate your love and admiration for each other.

Hepburn | 17

Dress for you There is something uniquely uplifting about a good Mother’s Day celebration. A fabulous getup is empowering and reassuring of our confidence; even more so, it allows us to embrace the joy and the love for others and ourselves. Regardless of how and where you are celebrating this year, you have the capacity to look and feel fantastic this Mother’s Day.

18 | Hepburn

Brunch in style It might take a little planning to manage this at home but it is worth every enjoyable morsel. Brunch as a social event can last for several hours and a shared meal is always a perfect opportunity to reunite and reinforce your family bonds. There is so many options for brunch, hot or cold, savoury or sweet, plated or buffet, eat in or dine out. No matter how you choose to celebrate this Mother’s Day you are destined to enjoy a cornucopia of food and love.

Creating Memories

Floral Bouquet In Australia we love gifting a brunch of chrysanthemum’s on Mother’s Day. And it’s the red Chrysanthemum that means Motherly love and gratitude. Regardless of the colour, it is a great long-lasting cut flower and it even ends with the word “mum.” Off course, you can mix it up and create a beautiful bouquet with roses, tulips, carnations or Australian natives. A potted Chrysanthemum creates more memorable and lasting gift that can be planted out to show your mum how much you love her. Not only will your mum enjoy a showy display every May, she’ll be reminded of you.

Making Mother’s Day a special occasion for your family is a wonderful way to spend time together, share family stories, to have family fun, and to create enduring memories. If you believe that brunch is a little passé, or simply not your style, find something that you can do together as a family. It might be taking to a paint and sip class, or hosting a bocce tournament, booking into a spa or a weekend getaway, or find something more adventurous like ziplining, kayaking or stroll through the farmer’s markets.

No matter what treat you have planned for the 9th May, your Mother will glow with pride for simply having her family by her side.

The Real You, The Changing You Sushmita Sharma

Beyond this body, the personality, and the traits that you are known for, who are they really? Do you know? Does anybody? We think we know who we are but what is our perception of self is simply an illusion created by the projection of someone else’s opinion of who we are? This is the second and final part to this article. The first part of this article looked as how people change, selfconcept, ego and cultural contexts. Please continue on this journey of selfexploration to discover the real you.

Herclitus’ Theory of Self When trying to unravel the prolonged mystery of “Know Thyself”, we must look at the philosophy of a pre-Socratic philosopher, Heraclitus of Ephesus. In his belief, everything is constantly changing and nothing is ever the same. He used an analogy of a river to highlight the similarity in the ever-changing world.

“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” - Heraclitus At the molecular level, the river is at a constant change. The water in front of you is not the same water as it was a second ago. In its constant flow, the river keeps changing, as does the person watching it. We, as human beings, change every second. Every second you observe a new thing, your memory changes. With every breath you take, you inhale a new composition of air. 20 | Hepburn

Every cell of your body is dying and replacing itself throughout your life. The point is, biologically your body is at a constant change, but what about your mind? Well, that is changing too. You might be a very friendly, kind, and positive person in your partner’s eyes, but maybe, not in the eyes of someone else. Imagine this scenario. You ordered a new appliance but it got damaged during the shipping. When you called the customer service helpline, they said that there is no refund and return policy and you should have bought the shipping insurance to protect your product from such damage. What is your instant reaction? Anger? Frustration? Maybe it is reflected in your tone too. Perhaps you complain ever furiously now than before. Now, try to understand your image from the other side. That person is only doing their job and following the protocol and your aggravated behaviour, for them, may not be justified. But you faced a loss too, and for you, this reaction seems appropriate. For this person, you are a nagging and obstinate customer. But are you really a nagging and obstinate person? Maybe not.

Hepburn | 21

22 | Hepburn

This is exactly what Herclitus’ theory suggests. Every person is different in a different time and situation. From this logic, self-actualisation, at its core, is a myth, an impossible and unattainable goal. However, this sounds a lot like ego. It is not you who is reacting to different situations in different times, making you a different person in everyone’s perception. It is your ego that makes you act differently in different circumstances. You are a lot more than the understanding of you in others’ opinion. You are a lot more than just the collection of ideas gathered by your actions. The problem is that it is tremendously challenging to fight your ego and not let your action be guided by it. But remember, nothing in this world is impossible if you are determined to make it possible.

Control your Ego The first thing you should remember in finding your true self, is to stop looking and letting it reveal itself to you. The second is to understand that your ego should not control you. You should control your ego. When you let your soul take charge of your ego, you gain full awareness of your existence and purpose in this universe. Here are a few ways you can take control of your ego.

Recognize your ego You must completely understand your ego in order to control it. Do you find yourself silently speaking to yourself in your head? Most of the times, it is your ego. When someone’s action makes you angry and you think in your head “How

dare they do that to me?”, that is your ego. Let go of these voices in your head. Let go of the “What ifs” scenarios you keep creating in your head. These are all signs of your ego creeping its way in your journey of self-identification. It has an innate desire to plant negative thoughts and imaginary scenarios that generate fear in your head. Recognise this voice and stop following it.

“Dissolve your ego before it dissolves your self.” Maxime Lagacé

Let go of your pride The ego loves being right. Most of the times, when you feel a negative emotion towards someone, it is because your ego creates this image that they did something wrong to you and you are the victim of the situation. It blinds you from seeing the other person’s perspective. This “I am right and you are wrong” mindset is the most favourite game of the ego. Understand that you can be wrong too. Do not let your ego take the face of pride and separate you from the connections with others in this world. Practice gratitude every night when you go to bed. Think of all the people who helped you during the day. Thank the universe for your existence and for introducing you to the people and opportunities that make your life a little better every day.

Hepburn Hepburn | | 23 23

Be one with the universe Being one with the universe means letting yourself be an inseparable part of the universe. According to the Law of Attraction philosophy, your thoughts and emotions are forms of energies that you provide to the universe. The universe, in turn, brings you scenarios that you had imagined or wished for. So, when you let your ego constantly plant negative emotions in your head, the universe will return the same in your life. Create a positive home for your internal thoughts and emotions so that the universe can create a positive space for you.

“All that we are is a result of what we have thought.” – Buddha Practice mindfulness Silence allows you listen beyond the superficial sounds of your inner self. To quiet your ego and listen to your true inner self – your soul, you must sit in silence and let your soul speak. Sit in silence and practice mindfulness. Let your inner self become aware of every part and every sense of your body. When you feel the life energy flowing through your body, your consciousness rises. Let this awareness course through every bit of your body. Become one with your inner-self through this awareness of life energy. At first, your ego will deliberately distract you and put your attention to other activities or topics that stress your mind.

24 | Hepburn

The moment you realise you are being distracted, bring your attention back to your present moment. After months of practising meditation, mindfulness becomes effortless and you create a more peaceful living space for your inner self.

Grow your Wisdom When you control your ego and stop obsessing over imaginary or irrelevant scenarios, you allow your brain to gain wisdom and learn more about life and yourself. You stop blaming others and start focusing on your own growth. Complaining becomes forgiveness. Anger becomes peace. You become more you and less of your ego.

Hepburn | 25

You are Beautiful We all look in the mirror to look for the signs of change. We look for wrinkles appearing, jouls forming, gravity taking hold, and those weight changes. We are so critical of ourselves, so unaccepting of ourselves. We are our harshest critic. What if we became our greatest ally instead. With the right attitude, a little confidence and a touch of kindness you will glow radiantly and see just how beautiful you are.

1.

Attitude

We have been programmed into thinking that we are only beautiful when we are wearing the right clothes and make-up. That was until we found the COVID Confidence. We have spent over 12 months showing up to zoom meetings without make-up and wearing our comfy clothes. We became accepted as we are.

2.

Confidence Now we are out of lockdown, it isn’t the time to drop the COVID Confidence. Its time to remember how comfortable we were in our own skin. Confident in our own selves. If you are lacking confidence, try smiling. Smiling uses muscles that change how you appear. Not only will you look confident, you will begin to feel it as well.

26 | Hepburn

3.

Kindness Treat yourself with kindness. After all, that woman looking back at you when you look in the mirror will always be you. We are meant to change, that is just life. But if you stop judging your appearance and start appraising your reflection with kindness, you will be happier with who you are becoming. With a little kindness you will start a journey believing you are beautiful.

“Be kind to your body, gentle with your mind and patient with your heart. Stay true to your spirit, cherish your soul and never doubt yourself. You are still becoming, my love, and there is no one more deserving of the nurturing grace of your love.” - Becca Lee

Shattering the Glass We all realise the glass ceiling is real, but arm yourself right and you may just smash right through! The glass ceiling is a metaphor for the invisible barrier of workplace norms and biases that prevent women for rising to the managerial and executive levels. Having your career progression blocked may leave you feeling confused, angry, resentful, and isolated. You may even start to doubt yourself. But don’t let this negative experience destroy your dreams.

“I believe the only limitations are the ones that we accept. I know that there is, in theory, a glass ceiling. But I don't believe that it's a solid wall. I'm going through it. Nothing's stopping me. Yes, there are these preconceived notions; yes, we have challenges. Let's accept them, let's not be afraid of them, let's break through them.”

In 2020 the Workplace Gender Equality Agency revealed in a study based on Australian companies over a six-year period that there is a causal relationship between greater gender diversity and business success. Similarly in the United Kingdom, The Women Count 2020 Report found that companies that have greater gender diversity in the leadership panel show greater profit margins then companies that don’t have women in positions of leadership. The profit margin difference is great and cannot be ignored. Women can arm themselves for success with self-improvement. By developing three key areas, women may find an opening in the impervious

Attitude

Set Yourself up for Success

A can do attitude will always shine through. Employers often hire based on attitude over skills. Skills can be learnt on the job but the right attitude must be present. Attitude is a complexity of traits including tenacity and confidence. You need the tenacity to deal with challenges and the confidence to overcome them.

Don’t set yourself up for failure. Women often fail to push through the glass ceiling by:

Education While attitude is a starter, you will need to necessary skills to succeed. Start with the necessary qualification for your industry and then continue. Continue to build your skills with professional development and further education.

Mentoring If you haven’t already, find a mentor and if you can find one go stand on the shoulders of giants. A good mentor will hone you into a strong leader, help you develop the critical skills needed to thrive and survive. It can be hostile at the top.

“I never thought I was breaking a glass ceiling. I just had to do what I had to do, and it never occurred to me not to.”

- Marian Wright Edelman

1. Failing to ask for more: learn the art of negotiation 2. Undervaluing their skills: recognise and own your expertise 3. Avoiding conflict: participate in healthy discussion and debate 4. Expecting it all at once: learn to walk not run 5. Fearing risk and failure: believe in yourself, and learn from failure

Seek an Alternative Not every job is going to be the right one for you. If you are a mother, consider whether the organisation offers flexible hours, part-time work or telecommuting. If you are pursuing further education, consider whether the organisation provide study support and time off for exams. If you are ready to soar, look to see if the executive has a gender bias, it may be an indicator that your career progression is limited.

Beware the Glass Cliff The Glass Cliff is a metaphor for the phenomenon that women tend to be promoted to positions of power during times of crises or downturn, when failure is more likely. Typically, women on the glass cliff will have broken through the glass ceiling. We’re not saying don’t try, just be cautious. Finally, your career goals and success is really only limited by you. If you can’t move ahead where you are, then move to an organisation where you can progress. Or if you have a burning desire to lead, start your own business, you will be in charge and you will find the only ceiling is the one above you.

etamorphosis for Self

Doesn’t it feel like yesterday when you stood with open arms and innocent hearts bringing gifts with love to your mother on Mother’s Day. Now it’s May and you will again be celebrating Mother’s Day. It is a day of external love, breakfast brunches and long lunches, and chocolates and chrystanthemums. And for those who have lost their mother, you may wistfully remember your mother on Bereaved Mother’s Day. Some of you will experience the gift of love for and from your child. We may not all be mothers and able rely upon the undenial love of a child, some may never have this joy, some may choose a life without a child, some may be waiting for that bundle of joy. Whether you are a mother or not, does not mean you have no reason to celebrate the one day dedicated to eternal love. And even if you do have little ones tugging as you read this article, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t cherish yourself.

Forget the negative connotations of loneliness and desperation. What many people fail to realise is that being childless can be an extraordinary experience that allows for a more independent life, and allows you to invest time in your own improvement. And for those who are happily in their dreamland of motherhood, remember that a family lets you gather strength but rarely allows you your own space when you need it. So, this Mother’s Day, let your self-love grow, and give you a new meaning of self, power and hope through a moment of solitude. Whether you are a mother, waiting to become one or choosing none, this Metamorphosis for Self is crafted for all the women out there who deserve to be loved, by themselves first.

Hepburn | 33 Hepburn | 33

Concept of Self You have a sense of self, whether it is positive or negative. It will be based on your experiences in life and your perceptions of yourself. Your concept of self derives from your perception of yourself, your self-esteem and self-efficacy. If you have low self-esteem or low self-efficacy you may have a distorted view of yourself. This may be due to past losses and grief. It is important to move past the losses and grief of the past and believe in the new opportunities that the future holds for you. What you believe about yourself strongly influences your choices, your level of effort and your persistence. As you improve your concept of self you will find renewed hope, power, grace and peace. You may seek someone else’s opinion of how they perceived you but you must resist the pressure to accept their view as your own. Only you have the insight to dive into the wondrous cavern of who you truly are, to perceive yourself. As you remove the barriers and hesitations you will find the strength to let go of the past and learn from it and move on with a new perspective. It is a process that relies only on you to heal and live as yourself. As you do, you will find the wings of freedom and confidence to be you.

Butterflies can’t see their wings. They can’t see how truly beautiful they are, but everyone else can. People are like that as well.

34 | Hepburn

― Naya Rivera

Building Your Self Efficacy Your self-efficacy is your belief that you have the ability to accomplish a task. Accept that you may be capable to complete some things but not others. Let go of perfection and redefine your journey with love, joy and happiness. Never quit working on yourself. So, this Mother’s Day, give yourself a gift of becoming more self-reliant and confident.

Building Your Self Esteem Self esteem is the measure of respect that you have for yourself. High selfesteem allows you to live genuinely, to live positively, and to live happily. If your self esteem is low you may have feelings of unhappiness, anxiety, inferiority, and negativity. Build your self esteem with positive affirmations, by recognising your strengths, and your self worth. Accept mistakes and rejection. You are worth it! In your current circumstances, whether you are enjoy maternal love, are waiting for it, or not there is always room for some improvement. Remember, no one in this world can complete you but yourself. You are only capable of giving love to others when you love yourself truly. If you are grieving, burn the pain and move past it with your newer self who has learnt some important lessons of life. Celebrate the love you have for yourself before you offer it to someone else.

Build your self esteem, and become the real you. You are competent. You are resilient. You are strong and powerful. You are capable of achieving any milestone in this world. You are complete. You are both Yin and Yang within yourself.

Completing Your Self Love

Loving yourself can be as challenging as loving someone else. In fact, it is more challenging than that because here, there is no exit strategy. It is just you with yourself and you must equally love your flaws as much as you love your strengths. The journey of self-love requires efforts and commitment but it is equally rewarding in terms of empowerment, confidence, and self-esteem. The love you seek from the outer world actually truly manifests from within you. This Mother’s Day, before you buy a gift for your mother, take these little steps first, to give the gift of love to yourself.

Hepburn Hepburn | | 35 35

1. Care

3. Appreciate

Be the woman you desire. Remember to keep your body hydrated, in and out. Take care of your skin with natural and organic ingredients like aloevera, shea butter, and coconut. Selfcare is the first step in the journey of self-love. Just as you care for your loved ones, care for yourself. Pay attention to the things you like and dislike. Get enough sleep and eat healthy food. Most importantly, burn the negative vibes around you and rise above with a positive glow.

Appreciate that you are glorious, you are worthy and beautiful! Be grateful for your existence and appreciate the little steps you take every day to transform to your better self. Write a letter to yourself in which you enlist all the things you find beautiful within yourself. Express your gratitude towards that beauty of your heart that makes you who are. Appreciate everything you do for yourself and for others. Remember, you are enough for yourself.

2. Accept

4. Pamper

Acceptance comes from truly acknowledging your strengths and weaknesses. Belief in your true and infinite potential, and in your capability. You can begin by maintaining a journal and noting down the areas where you excel and those where you need to improve. This will help you build your selfworth and release any hidden anxieties too. The more you acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses, the more you get to know yourself. When you accept your inner, authentic self, you move closer to falling in love with yourself. Remember, from a million broken pieces, a beautiful mosaic is created.

No amount of love is enough love. It is time to overdo it and no, there is nothing wrong with it. Pamper yourself by indulging in some glorious pleasures of life. If your best friends are named Diamonds or Pearls, meet them! Treat yourself with your favourite piece of jewellery or go to that fine-dining restaurant that has been on your list for months. Have a pedicure and a manicure. Whatever it is that you wouldn’t usually do, do it this Mother’s Day. Let love fly you to new heights this Mother’s Day.

When looking at buying, renovating or building consider the impact of your windows, check out:

We all want a comfortable home and windows are an essential part to consider in achieving this when looking at buying, renovating or building a home.

• research thermal properties of glazing systems (i.e. single & double etc),

Windows are great conductors and transfer energy easily into and out of the home, and this costs us money and comfort.

“Up to 40% of a home’s heating energy can be lost and up to 87% of its heat gained through windows. Improving windows’ thermal performance reduces energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions.”

40 | Hepburn 40 | Hepburn

• the buildings design (i.e. how does its orientation, design & layout affect the windows performance) • locations climate (i.e. humidity, sunshine, wind & temperature),

• building materials (i.e. thermal mass & insulation used) There are many factors that make up the energy efficiency of a home, and windows are important to consider as you enjoy the view to the outside. Windows also provide heat gain in Summer & in Winter heat loss, so anything you can do to maximise their efficiency is worthwhile, to improve your comfort and can save you money. Growing up in Mount Beauty and skiing at Falls Creek, and working at the State Electricity Commission of Victoria for 13 years together with some work with CertainTeed Double Glazed Windows in Melbourne made me really appreciate the benefits of solar passive design and energy efficiency.

Have a good look at the windows in the home you’re considering as they have a significant impact on the future comfort and enjoyment you will experience during your ownership. Its great if an existing home already had double glazing, but if it does not consider the ways in which you could improve their efficiency and your comfort (i.e., pelmets, curtains, outside shading, any draughts around the window frames). When building or renovating, the added investment of installing double glazing, should save you on such areas as sizing of the heating or cooling systems, window coverings not to mention your ongoing heating and cooling bills.

“Passive design reduces or eliminates the need for auxiliary heating or cooling, which accounts for about 40% (or much more in some climates) of energy use in the average Australian home.” I love looking out the windows in a home, letting in light and feeling connected to the outside environment, and if I can choose a home or investment with double glazing, I will do so to enjoy the energy savings, cost savings, benefit to the environment and increased comfort.

Your Money, Your Wealth, Your Estate Jacqueline Hodges

We all long for a healthy life in our retirement and enough funds in retirement, enough funds to enjoy ourselves, and some left over for our family. If you can relate to this, then you need consider how you wish to live in your retirement, establish your goals, start planning for your future, and decide how to share your estate among your family and love ones after your death. If you haven’t considered your retirement yet, now is the time to start planning. Because the earlier you start the more likely you will have plenty to enjoy in your later years.

We are fortunate in Australia, that we have guaranteed future retirement savings in the form of superannuation. Those of us we are employed, have the benefit of our employers pay at least 9.5% of our wage into our superannuation fund. If you are selfemployed you, your superannuation savings may be more sporadic than you desire. Shaping your future can be confusing and not only involves navigating a myriad of rules, regulations and tax laws but also managing the family dynamics. You should seek the help of your financial team but as an introduction you will need to establish a retirement plan and an estate plan.

Hepburn | 47

Start a Retirement Plan We all have dreams about how we wish to spend our retirement. It may be a sea change with a life at the beach, a tree change to a farmlet or a lifestyle block, or a caravan trip around Australia. How you fund your lifestyle choice will require planning and the earlier you start you will be able to control of your retirement savings. Planning requires understanding your goals and values. Spend some time to think about how you wish to spend your retirement and write down you goals. Once you have your goals established you need to consider how much you will need to fund those goals. Ask yourself. Are your goals feasible? Can you save enough to fund those goals? Funding your retirement can be a multi-pronged approach. You may be waiting to downsize form the family home into a smaller property and use the excess equity for your retirement funds. You may already have a sizable superannuation fund and investment portfolio and feel confident that your retirement is secure. If you haven’t got a plan yet, that’s ok. Now is the time to focus on your future, consider what options you have and set your plan in motion.

only be taxed at 15%. You will also receive a pension from your superannuation and although while you are under 60 years of age the pension is assessable, you will receive a 15% tax offset against this income. Effectively, the amount that you put into your superannuation fund will be more than the amount that you take out as a pension.

Transition to Retirement

“Right now is the best time to create your tomorrow.” – Ken Poirot

If you are aged 55 and over and are still working you may be able to supplement your income and your superannuation savings using a Transition to Retirement pension. If transitioning to retirement you can transfer some or all of your current superannuation into pension phase while continuing to earn income. You can boost your super by salary sacrificing additional super into your fund up to the concessional cap. Your additional superannuation contributions will

Start an Estate Plan You estate plan is more than simply preparing a will. Your will is just one part of the estate plan. Estate planning is a process. A process of deciding how your assets will be organised and managed before and after you pass away. It is an important part of your wealth management. While your estate plan will include your will, it may also include life insurance, and a testamentary trust. A testamentary trust is a special type of trust that is set up by your will on your death. They are particularly useful for distributing to minors or where you wish to protect the assets from be split in a divorce. Your superannuation does not form part of your estate, but deciding how the superannuation will be distributed is a part of the estate planning process. Generally you will nominate a beneficiary by way of a Non-Binding Death Benefit Nomination or a Binding Death Benefit Nomination. Remember, things change, people change, and choices change. Your estate plan is simply a plan and it can also change to reflect your changing relationships, your changing wishes and also changes in the law. You should consider it to be a dynamic document that is to be reviewed regularly.

Bind Death Benefit Nomination A Binding Death Benefit Nomination is a written direction from you to the trustee of your superannuation fund setting out how you want the remaining superannuation balance to be distributed and to whom it is to be distributed. The BDBN must be renewed each three years, but might also lapse if your marital status changes. The BDBN must be in writing, signed, dated and appropriately witnessed to be valid.

Make a date with yourself Block out some time and clear a space, so that you are mentally prepared to think about your future, your retirement, and your estate. Have a notepad ready. You can use a variety of tools, such as a mind-map, post-it notes, an excel spreadsheet, an electronic notepad or specialist software. Whichever tools you are going to use, have them ready to commence your date.

“The best time to start was yesterday. The next best time is now.” –

Setting Goals and Values Goalsetting is essential in developing your retirement plan. So make it an important part of your life. Set financial goals that align with your values and think about how you direct your current and future cash flows to achieve those goals. Goalsetting helps us align our desires and wants with an actionable plan and timeframe to achieve them.

Overcome the challenges of dealing with your future with SMARTER Goals. SMARTER is a mnemonic acronym. Set SMARTER Goals.

Align your values to your goals Once you know what your goals are, you can see how these align to your values. You may find at times that you move away or diverge from your values. It is normal to change your values at different life stages or when your circumstances change, such as when you are preparing to retire, and when you retire. Remember to revisit your values and align them with your goals on your budget date night. Here are some examples: Values

Goals

Security

Having an emergency fund of $10,000

Travel

Having cash available for one big trip per year

Family

Having time available to care for grandchildren

Health

Maintaining top level Private Health Insurance

Caring

Ambition 1. An earnest desire and determination to achieve success.

What’s IN Whether you dream of a sea change or a tree change, living regionally is currently in vogue. The once soft prices of regional Australia are rising. But the lure of the fresh salt air, the relaxed country living and friendly village atmosphere certainly has its appeal for young and old. Even with the rising prices, regional Australia is still affordable. It is affordable for the young who want to raise their family in the country and can manage the commute or remote work life. It’s also a great down-sizer option for those nearing retirement looking to boost their pension funds.

“We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are go-ng back to whence we came.” – J F Kennedy It doesn’t matter whether you are young or old, regional living offers a great lifestyle for those who get involved with the community. Don’t worry if it takes a while to adjust, change takes time, be happy with where you are and take time to sit back and enjoy the simple things.

“The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.” – William Arthur Ward

What’s OUT Inner city living is changing! One beds and studios apartments now sit empty and hotels now medi-accommodate for COVID-19. The city malls are devoid of the crowds, offices are barren, and shopping opportunities Spartan. Once the mecca for young and old, the city is no more the place for fast living, swanky shopping, the coffee culture, glamorous high teas, and sumptuous meals, or quiet library times and art gallery visits. It is now the place we wish to escape from. Since the pandemic we crave safety in isolation and distance.

“The city is not a concrete jungle, it is a human zoo.” – Desmond Morris Cities are overpriced concrete jungles. We suffered the small apartments to enjoy being there, in the heart of it all.

“The heart of a city Is the soul of a man

“A city is a place where there is no need to wait for next week to get the answer to a question, to taste the food of any country, to find new voices to listen to and familiar ones to listen to again.” - Margaret Mead

And in the end, even Michelangelo loved the city above all!

It winds like a river Through the heart of the land They can tear down a building They can tear down a park They can strike at a symbol But they can’t strike the heart” - Janis Ian We once longed for togetherness, the justle and bustle of the crowds, the togetherness of the human herd. The being together and witnessing the traffic and congestion. Hepburn | 61

Inspiring International Women

Oprah Winfrey There was a period when she was the Queen of day time television and the host of her own talk show. Farewelled in 2011 over a two part episode, after 25 years The Oprah Winfrey Show may be gone but our memory of Oprah Winfrey and the support she offered to her audience, to her guests and to women in general has not diminished. Oprah is as recognisable today as she was when she was just beginning to take her stand.

“Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another stepping stone to greatness.” Hepburn | 63

While best known as an American talk show host, Oprah is a television producer, actress, author, tv host and most notably philanthropist. She an international influencer, and started the rapport talk genre. She made viewers care because she cared.

It doesn’t matter who you are, where you come from. The ability to triumph begins with you – always. Her rapport talk shows and down-to-earth style provided audiences with a glimpse into Oprah’s life as she confessed to us the details of her life, from struggling with weight, to difficulties in her love life, to sexual abuse. Nothing was sacred as she drew out the intimate details of her guests lives and cried along with them. She is a passionate philanthropist and has helped many and brought social issues to the world’s attention. None more so than her trip to schools and orphanages in poverty-stricken areas of South Africa.

“The key to realizing a dream is to focus not on success but on significance — and then even the small steps and little victories along your path will take on greater meaning.” She is a passionate philanthropist and has helped many and brought social issues to the world’s attention. She has helped families rebuild homes struck down by hurricanes. She supported charitable projects and provided grants to non-profit organizations around the world. She holds great value in education and she personally invested into a leadership academy for girls in Johannesburg. But her trip to schools and orphanages in povertystricken areas of South Africa melted the hearts of her audience. That Christmas episode raised over $7million from viewers across the globe.

“Everybody has a calling. And your real job in life is to figure out as soon as possible what that is, who you were meant to be, and to begin to honor that in the best way possible for yourself.”

64 | Hepburn 64 | Hepburn

“Leadership is about empathy. It is about having the ability to relate to and connect with people for the purpose of inspiring and empowering their lives.” The champion of the underprivileged and the underdog, may be a strong woman but she is not without fear. If you didn’t know this you maybe as surprised as I was to find Oprah has Globophobia. It’s a chunky word, meaning a fear of balloons. But she has turned that fear into a metaphor for facing your fears, when for her 40th birthday, she had to walk through a room filled with balloons.

“The thing you fear most has no power. Your fear of it is what has the power. Facing the truth really will set you free.”

So, it comes as no surprise then that Oprah was the chosen host to speak with Prince Harry Duke of Sussex and Meghan Duchess of Sussex as they tell-all and reveal why they left the palace. Not Oprah’s strength and credibility as a celebrity interviewer does not need to be reinforced. She is the first black female billionaire. She is a media mogul and entrepreneur. She launched her OWN network and has more recently signed with Apple. She has the Oprah Effect.

“You are where you are in life because of what you believe is possible for yourself.”

Many of us may remember well the celebrity guests that clambered for a spot on the show, Tom Cruise, Kim Kardashian, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, and even Ellen Degeneres. The Oprah Show was the catapult that launched several careers and successful independent shows including Dr Phil and Doctor OZ. But back in 1996 is was the tell-all by Sarah Ferguson Duchess of York and formerly wife of Prince Andrew Duke of York that had us watching as she revealed her life as a royal. “With every experience, you alone are painting your own canvas, thought by thought, choice by choice.” Hepburn | 65

D

eveloping the Team

You’re an effective leader, you direct and delegate your work to you team. You understand the unique strengths of each of your team members. After all you’re only as good as the people around you. This might be your perfect scenario but how do you know that your team are performing at their best? Have you identified their strengths? Do you understand the skills required to perform their jobs? How do you develop the team?

66 | Hepburn

Team Development

Starts with You Leaders who are capable of building and developing effective teams have a critical advantage over others. When delivered correctly, team development can create an atmosphere that encourages cooperation, teamwork and trust within the team. But this development has to start with you. Shaping good behaviour within the team starts with role modelling, and good self-development will also help refine the skills you need to help develop others. Start by building trust so you can inspire your team to take ownership of their roles. Show you are invested in their success and on their side. Turn weekly meetings into learning opportunities. In fact, all your interactions with the team, from reviews, to catch ups, to weekly meetings, are opportunities to develop your team. How are you integrating a development mindset into your regular meetings? Try asking questions. Involve your team by asking good questions.

Your Leadership Approach As a manager, you will choose different leadership approaches to respond to different team members and situations according to the experience and knowledge of the team member and the level of complexity of the situation. When approaching a given scenario, you may choose an approach that is coaching, mentoring, training or counselling. Understanding which approach is the right one for a given situation equips you to help your team.

Your teams’ success equates to your success. Your ability to inspire and develop people is critical to not only your own future, as you climb up the leadership ladder, but also to the business objectives and goals.

Hepburn | 67

Coaching

Training

Coaching typically focuses on task and performance and is an effective approach for improving performance. The role of the coach is to provide feedback on your team member’s observed performance. If using this approach you are likely to set and suggest goals for the individual and measure performance periodically as they develops new skills. This approach requires a good rapport between the coach and the individual team members.

Training is used to impart knowledge and information through instruction and explanation and is effective for simple knowledge transfer scenarios. The goal is for team members to acquire new skills, through focused training sessions. Like counselling learning is a one-way flow and the relationship between a trainer and team member may not exist. Training may be facilitated by external experts or even via web tools to deliver training on demand.

Mentoring Mentoring emphasises a mutuality of learning between the mentor and the mentee and is an effective approach for building the capability of a carefully selected team member. The role of the mentor is to build capability and help the team member discover their personal wisdom by encouraging them to work towards their goals. Because this approach is mutually beneficial a higher level of rapport develops. If you are the direct line manager it is best to help your team member find a mentor.

68 | Hepburn

Counselling Counselling involves listening and questioning to build self-awareness and self-confidence in the team member and is effective in helping a team member deal with personal hurdles. The role of the counsellor is to help the person deal with work issues the team member finds emotionally difficult. This approach is usually used when performance is not adequate. Learning from counselling is one-way and does not require as high a level of rapport.

The 70:20:10 Model The 70:20:10 model developed by Morgan McCall, Michael M. Lombardo and Robert A. Eichinger in the 1980’s, suggests that 70 percent of learning is experiential. It happens through experience. 20 percent of learning is social it happens through conversations with other people. While 10 percent of learning is formal and happens through traditional training courses.

E

Experimental - Learning on the Job, across multiple contexts and challanges

S

Social - Coaching, Mentoring, Feedback from sharing and collaberating

F

Formal - Programs and courses, eLearning, Work simulations and reading

Other Training Models Technology and online and mobile learning technologies, have altered the views of the 70-20-10 model as it does not reflect the increased emphasis on informal learning. Recent research identified a new concept of learning called the OSF ratio. OFS meaning on-the-job, social, and formal. The OFS emphasises formal training as a foundation in training but realised the experiential and social are also important in team development. There are other training models, such as 3E learning model by CLO, representing three “Es” of experience, exposure and education, and the FIS model by Dan Pontefract, representing formal, informal and social learning.

Low Rapport The Power of Coaching When leaders take the time to coach their team effectively, the results can be impressive. Leadership expert Jack Zenger suggest effective coaching will generate: • higher levels of engagement and commitment! • higher willingness to “go the extra mile” for the team • higher levels of job satisfaction • higher ratings of supervisor effectiveness • Lower employee turnover

Leave them do their work Your team needs to know they can trust you. If you treat them with the dignity, respect, and courtesy they deserve, you will be empowering them too. Step away and let them do their job but also let them know how valuable they are within the team and to the business. If they know their success matters to you, they will respect your feedback and show you how their improvement. Your responsibility as a leader is to develop your team and help them to achieve their personal best. 70 | Hepburn

Passion 1. Any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling, as love or hate 2. A strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for anything 72 | Hepburn

For Love or Obsession I love it, I just love it! I truly love it! When you are blinded by emotion, is it truly love or has it become an obsession? If the very thought of that someone or something preoccupies your mind to the occlusion of all else, then it’s more likely to be an obsession. But how can you really know if it’s an obsession, how can you tell them apart, and what can you do to control it?

Hepburn | 73

Now, if you have started a new hobby that has taken over your life to the exclusion of all else. For example, you are only eating take away, you’ve stopped washing the dishes, you’ve stopped doing any form of housework, you’ve isolated yourself from friends and you are working on your new project from morning to night, you may need to take a look at why you are neglecting yourself, your loved ones and life. And unless you do have an urgent deadline to meet you probably do have an obsession that you need to deal with.

So just what are the warning signs to watch out for:

But what about when it comes to romantic love? You have finally found someone you gets you, who shares your interests, your values, your passions, you have common dreams and as time passes you find are falling head over heels in love. Lucky you! Love is healthy. But obsession is something else. How can you tell them apart? Particularly at the beginning of the relationship when all you are feeling is gooey sweetness, butterflies and excitement, when everything is new and you are learning about each other, and you are absorbed in each other? How can you tell if your new found lover is obsessed?

• They are overly and intensively attentive

Love is risky. When you begin a new relationship, you allow your vulnerability, insecurity and anxiety to rise. After all, you are placing trust is someone you hardly know. In the early stages the difference between love and obsession is subtle. But if there is any sign of extreme anxiety or an extreme controlling behaviour you may be in an obsessive love relationship. Obsessive love relationships can be damaging and leave you defenceless and subordinate.

74 | Hepburn

• They are pushing the relationship into moving too fast • They have low self-esteem and tend to need excessive reassurance • They give more than they take • They make repeated calls and texts each and every day • They try to monitor or control your daily life and activities

• They tend to focus on only your positive or the negative features or behaviours • They have trouble focusing on their daily lives, work, and other activities • Mental health disorders such are schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, delusional disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder Love is honest. Obsession comes from fear and anxiety. If you feel your relationship is unhealthy speak with your partner about your feelings. If they are genuinely falling in love with you they will want you to be open and frank with them. After all, they may not be aware of their actions and how they make you feel. It might be nudge that is needed to get the relationship back on track. Relationships are reciprocal, if the conversation is not going well or triggers inappropriate behaviours you may need to find a way to improve the relationship or say goodbye.

Love can conquer. Obsessive love is not a good foundation for a relationship but you can find a way to move forward if both you and your partner are willing to try. Some ways you can help your relationship move forward are: •

Ask for some space

Reduce contact

Focus on yourself

Analyse your feelings

Find a hobby

Find a support network

Seek professional counselling

expectations and open your heart and mind to a healthy relationship filled with love. Focus on giving love because the more deeply you love the more deeply you will be loved in return. See who you are and love yourself because you will only receive what you are willing to give yourself. Likewise, see your partner for who they are and be willing to learn from them. As you learn from each other your relationship will blossom and grow. Finally, embrace the extraordinariness of the ordinary. Your love will grow out from sharing the ordinary things that occur in each day.

Once you have had some distance and have a little more time to yourself, you need to ask the big question. Ask yourself is this the relationship and future that you want. Love for yourself. If your partner is showing signs of threatening or dangerous behaviours, be ready to protect yourself. If your partner has been love bombing you, you may find they have narcissistic controlling tendencies. This may mean that you activate your safety plan, phone the police and if necessary apply for a restraining order.

“We come to love not by finding a perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly.” - Sam Keen

Love is healthy. A healthy love relationship is not a romance novel. It is a real life tale played by real people and you are one of them. So let go of the unrealistic

Exploring

Capoeira

C

apoeira is a Brazilian martial art form combining music, rythym, acrobatics, and dance. It is thought Capoeira is based on N’golo, a ritual dance of the involving elements of hand combat and the spiritual channelling of ancestors that was brought to Brazil by the African slaves during the years of Portuguese colonialism. Music and rhythm were used to camouflage the martial arts aspects, of the kicks and strikes as dance moves. Capoeira is a significant cultural practice and is now listed by UNESCO for its intangible cultural heritage.

The 3 Forms of Capoeira are; Angola, Regional, & Contemporânea. Capoeira Angola is a strategic form that values the traditions of cunning (malícia), subterfuge (malandragem) and unpredictability of movement. Capoeira Regional developed in the 1920’s, focuses mainly on attack, dodging and counter-attack, precision and discipline. Capoeira Contemporânea is a mix of the Angola and Regional styles or other marital arts, and each contemporânea mix is a style of its own that may be a fast-paced game, a dance influenced or a more aggressive style.

A capoeira game is played by two fighters (capoeiristas) in a circle (roda) formed by capoeiristas and capoeira musical instruments who keep the rhythym and tempo. Music is used to create a sacred space in forming the roda and an aural space to connect to the spirit world. 76 76 | | Hepburn Hepburn

The capoeira band (bateria) is composed of a mix traditional instruments, including berimbaus, pandeiros, agogo, reco-reco, and atabaque. While not all instruments may be used, there is always at least one berimbau in any roda. The berimbau, a single stringed musical bow, leads, begins, and ends the roda. Those forming the circle also sing traditional and modern capoeira songs. The roda commences with a solo (ladainha), usually sung by the one playing lead berimbau. The game commences with a call to invoke God, the Masters (Mestres), the capoeiristas (louvação), and to give thanks. During the game, a chorus (Corrido) is sung to inspire the players, to comment on the game, to praise the fighters, and to teach moral values. It is a dynamic martial art form, with various techniques that may be executed from the ground or during an acrobatic manoeuvre. Attacks may be hard including slaps, punches, elbows, kicks and knees, or softer sweeps. kicks and evasions. Florieos, are a group of techniques, stylistic variations, and acrobatic movements performed by experienced capoeiristas that look like breakdancing or acrobatics. Beginners learn 10 fundamental movements, starting with the fundamental footwork (ginga). The ginga, footwork in a triangle of constant movement, to the novice looks more like a rhythmic dance step than the steps towards a fighting stance. Today capoeira schools can be found throughout the world, in most major cities. If you are looking for a new challenge and a change in your workout regime, capoeira will provide both a physical and cultural experience. Not only will you learn a repertoire of martial arts movements as you progress through the various levels but you will learn the rhythm, the songs, the musical instruments and perhaps a little Portuguese.

Gone But Not Forgotten - Helen Reddy

80 | Hepburn

T

here have been many strong feminist activists that should be remembered, from Emmeline Pankhurst and those famous suffragettes of the early 1900’s, Simone de Beauvoir who in 1949 authored “The Second Sex”, Betty Friedan who in 1963 wrote “The Feminine Mystique”, the 60’s and 70’s “Mother of Feminism” Gloria Steinem, speaker and writer Maya Angelou, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg US Supreme Court justice and advocate for women’s rights. But this article is focusing on Helen Reddy, Australian-American pop singer who’s iconic 1972 pop song “I am Woman” became the anthem for the Feminist Movement. The iconic pop song co-written by Helen Reddy was a song that the music producers and disc jockeys of the day didn’t like but whose wives loved the lyrics.

“I think it came along at the right time. I’d gotten involved in the women’s movement, and there were a lot of songs on the radio about being weak and being dainty and all those sort of things. All the women in my family, they were strong women. They worked. They lived through the Depression and a world war, and they were just strong women. I certainly didn’t see myself as being dainty,”

“It’s not just for women…It’s a general empowerment song about feeling good about yourself, believing in yourself.”

The lyrics to I am Woman were inspired by Helen’s time in the Women’s Liberation Movement and captured the spirit of the feelings of women at meetings and became a defining song for a generation of women. The song was released to coincide with the opening of the feminist comedy movie “Stand Up And Be Counted.” Helen the savvy feminist agreed on the condition that the producer donate $1,000 to each of the Women’s Centre’s in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles and that she could rerecord the song. The song gained popularity climbing to the top of the US charts, making Helen Reddy the first Australian singer to hit Number One in the U.S. and receive a Grammy.

Hepburn | 81

During the 1970s, Reddy had several hits. “I am Woman” was her second hit, her first hit “I don’t know how to love him” saw her play Mary Magdalene in the 1970’s musical “Jesus Christ Superstar”. A succession of singles followed including “Delta Dawn”, “Leave Me Alone”, “You and Me Against the World”, “You’re My World” and “Angie Baby,” and 15 of her singles reached the top 10. She sold more than 15 million albums and more than 10 million singles. She won the Favourite Pop/Rock Female Artist in 1974 at the inaugural American Music Awards. She also became the first Australian to host a weekly primetime variety show on an American network, along with specials that were seen in more than 40 countries. She was the only Australian to achieve international success across every medium – recording, television, film, theatre and concert stage.

82 | Hepburn

In 2002 Helen returned to Australia to live in Sydney in her retirement. In 2006, she was inaugurated into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame. But she subsequently returned to the United Stated, and in 2015 suffering dementia she moved into the Motion Picture and Television Fund’s Samuel Goldwyn Center.

Helen was awarded the Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Services to Australian Music earlier this year. Her songs are easy listening and intergenerational. Whether she wanted to be remembered this way, her legacy is in providing the lyrics that inspired and encouraged the women of the 70’s and beyond.

Indulge the Basalt Plains Neil Churches The Changing Seasons: chill winds, long nights, short days, hot food, warm hearths, a time to gather with others at a hearty meal. A time to listen to wild tales, gentle stories, and share quiet memories. These moments around a table can be adventures in conversation. They are special at home, they are also special at rare places in the landscape. The Basalt Plains of Victoria have some unique places to share the warmth of tabletalk; sheltered gardens, grand dining rooms, and shearers’ huts For thousands of years the Western District of Victoria has been the richest landscape in Australia. Its basalt based soil creating a fertile plain of abundance. If you can reward yourself with two or more days travel from Melbourne, there are remarkable hidden gems of landscape that emerge above the horizon as you travel. From the small wildernesses of remnant dry rainforests to woolsheds, native grass fields to stunning crater lakes. Climb a green cinder cone to count how many other dormant volcanoes can be seen in any direction. Koroitj (Tower Hill) merges with the Southern Ocean and has its own microclimate within and surrounding its crater. The Sisters are an extraordinary landscape of interlocking craters of vast size, there is a remarkable sense of enfolding and enclosure as you pass through them on the way to the pale blue waters of to Lake Kurrumbeit. The Cloven Hills, Derrinallum (Mount Elephant), and Camperdown are all landmarks that change their mood depending on the time of day and angle of approach. If you are eagle eyed you can see the grand family houses nestled at the feet of other volcanic hills. You will also see the wealth of the district proudly displayed in the grandeur of the local towns. A quality of architecture that rivals that of the goldfields, but paid for by agriculture not mining.

Hepburn | 99

Remarkably there are pictures of most of these places from the 1850s. Painted by the first curator of the National Gallery of Victoria; Eugen von Guerard, who travelled through the district as an illustrator for scientific expeditions. Placing yourself at the viewpoint of these paintings and sketches allows you to see how the bones of the landscape remain constant, while the skin has been shifted. They are a remarkable images, the first accurate European visual record and a view of ancient husbandry and cultivation. The new food and wine culture emerging from The Basalt Plains is beginning to attract attention. Engaging these new approaches with the older cultures of the region makes for some remarkable possibilities. The longest continuous culture, the plains’ traditional custodians, have won UNESCO recognition for their aquaculture landscape at Budj Bim. The colonial culture of graziers remains intact with some families resident in their bluestone palaces since the 1830s. The conversations opening between these old and new residents is creating some interesting gourmet experiences. This is matched by exploration of story emerging in the small towns and communities around these magical hills. From bizarre talent night fundraisers that gather amazing performances, to the celebration of local literary heroes, like Alan Marshall in his home landscape of Noorat and Terang. Stories told about landscape and journeying, departure and arrival, belonging and dislocation. Family stories thousands of years old that intertwine with those almost “fresh off the boat.”

100 | Hepburn

Indulge The Basalt is a new adventure touring business bringing this landscape and cuisine to the sophisticated traveller. The experiences available over the seasons are curated into a series of small group tours. This local knowledge is shared over meals at surprising locations, a garden here, a hilltop there, as well as in warmth and comfort of a snug near the fire. Local variations of traditional recipes both indigenous, Asian and European are explored in the meals that follows the walks around and across the sleeping giants of the plain. There are discussions with winemakers throughout the journey about adapting European and New World viticulture methods to the Basalt Plains. This may be comprehensively tested in tasting and food matching by any hungry adventurers. Each day begins with a deluxe breakfast at a new hearth. There will be approximately three hours of driving time through the landscape per day and three hours walking per day, up and down volcanic slopes and around volcanic lakes. Two, three or four day journeys are on offer, all departing Melbourne. Small groups of six guests are driven in luxury vans and stay in deluxe rooms. All luggage is ported and a fully guided service is provided throughout the journey.

Follow my

Footsteps

Now that the weather is cooling it’s a great time to get out and start walking and enjoy the fresh air. You might enjoy the challenge of putting a new spring in your walking step with our pick of seven leisure pursuits to get you up and walking.

102 | Hepburn

Forest Bathing Unwind, de-stress, reconnect with nature and spiritually exfoliate your connectivity with technology. Forest bathing allows you to take time out, slow down, listen to the wind, breathe in the fresh clean air, and enjoy the beauty of nature. In Japan, Shinrin-yoku is used as a preventive medicine to help boost the immune system, lower corstiol levels, and improve memory and concentration. With forest bathing, you are not simply going for a walk in the forest or the bush. You are embarking on a mindful experience, looking at the colours of nature, observing nature’s patterns, touching the trees, seeing the sky, listening to nature, feeling the environment, while remaining in the present moment. You are connecting with nature and yourself. Take time for forest-bathing, allow yourself a few hours each month to convene with nature. If you can’t get out into the forest or bush, start out with a walk in your local botanic gardens or arboretum.

104 | Hepburn

Chi Walking Chi Walking is a low impact way to enjoy a mindful experience and a leisurely walk. It practices five mindful steps to help you get aligned, engage your core, improve balance, make better choices and finally to move forward. Chi Walking emphasises using the proper biomechanics of walking: good posture, loose joints, engaging your core and relaxing the arms and legs. To begin your Chi Walk, start with your feet hip-width apart and parallel, relax your feet and knees, and stall tall to make your spine as spacious and long. You will need to imagine your crown is pulled to the sky. Improve your balance by centering your body weight over your leading foot. Based on the philosophical and psychological principles of Tai chi, this style of walking is a spiritual exploration and the integration of body, mind and spirit. It may not be for everyone. It’s a little challenging and will take time to get right.

Hepburn | 105

Nordic Walking Nordic Walking is a popular trend to get you stepping out into the street, beating a path in the bush or trailing by a stream. It might seem that it’s a new trend but Nordic Walking has been around for decades. Originating in Finland, Nordic Walking or Sauvakävely as the Finnish say, is a total-body form of fitness walking that can offer non-athletes a healthy fitness alternative. For the serious walker, this technique is not just a fitness alternative it’s a sport. Many cross-country skiers and marathon runners use this technique both to train and stay fit in the off-season. Some trekkers and backpackers use the Nordic Walking poles whilst hiking. Whether you are young, old or somewhere in between, Nordic Walking is a great way to get you out of the armchair, back outdoors and have some fun. To get you starts, look for a Nordic walking club in the major cities or on the slopes.

106 | Hepburn

Foot Orienteering If you like timed problem-solving challenge, can read a topographical map and know how to use a compass, foot orienteering might be for you. This is a challenging sport that requires you to arrive at a destination across unfamiliar territory at speed. Orienteering is a competitive sport that began in Sweden in the late 1800’s. It is an organised, adventure sport that requires skill and speed. You will need the skill to choose the best route to find and arrive at checkpoints along the way. Often orienteering events are held in the bush, but they can also be in a park or in the streets. This is a sport for life. Whether you are 30 or 80, you can maintain physical and mental agility with orienteering. Holding a street or parkland orienteering event may also be a good way to raise funds for your local charity.

Hepburn | 107

Race Walking Step out fast with race walking. Race walking is a sport. This sport is not simply speed walking, it is an art form in itself with two rules. Race walkers must maintain contact with the ground by keeping their back toe on the ground until the heel of the front foot has touched, and your supporting leg must be straightened and remain straightened until the body passes directly over it. Learning to race walk to will put your walking work outs into high gear. Not only will your workout take less time but you will be burning more kilojoules. If you have a competitive edge and you believe walking may be your thing you might consider training for the Masters or even the World Race Walking Challenge. There are local clubs to help you start your race walk training on the right foot.

108 | Hepburn

Marathon Walking Not all of us can be runners but you may still like the challenge of the marathon with a walking event. It’s tough! Marathon walking will test your stamina and mental endurance. There are events for all stages, from beginners at just five kilometres, to a 50km ultramarathon, through to the 100km Oxfam Trailwalker. If walking a marathon is on your bucket list, you can find training groups in most major cities and towns. You will need a good level of fitness to complete in a marathon so preparation is key. Walking 8-10kms three times a week is a good start for a marathon, but step it up to 15kms for an ultramarathon. Remember to have fun, smell the air, look at your surrounds and join in organised walks to find a walk buddy.

Hepburn | 109

Parkour We are all amazed by the daring of the traceuse as they jump, climb and roll across the build environment. If you like courageous athletic and mental challenges, then tracing a path of climbing, jumping, running and balancing through a parkour de combattant (obstacle course) might be for you. You will need some willpower and courage to attack some of the obstacles. It is definitively a new way to interact with the built environment. Whilst the sport is fairly new it draws on the skills and techniques of the method naturelle and the ancient martial arts of qinggong, and ninja. This physical sport but has an underpinning philosophy of altruism, useful strength, longevity, self-improvement and selfunderstanding. While not mainstream per se, there are now parkour parks and associations in the major cities that will have you learning the steps, skills and philosophy.
