NEXT ISSUE March 2021
Letter from the Editor Happy New Year to you, from myself and the team. It is not without some excitement that I welcome you to the Phoenix Issue of Hepburn. We start this year filled with joy and rejoice in the possibilities, the new beginnings, and the fresh start that a new year brings. We start with a clean slate, a tabula rasa, to be filled with new stories, new people, and new conversations. The Phoenix, a mythical bird with feathers of red and gold, heralds from ancient times. It was said, the phoenix lived eternally, with its life ending in flames, only to be reborn, by arising from the ashes of its former self. Symbolic legends remind us that while life has its mysteries and challenges, we can learn from these, heal and begin again. This year, we invite you to be like the Phoenix and begin this year with the comfort and knowledge that you can make greater things happen. Our journey to deliver a multimedia magazine for our readers continues. We introduce you to two amazing women we spoke with in December for our In Conversation with Amazing Australian Women. Sally McGrath, Health and Wellbeing Coach and owner of Health that Heals, charmed us with her thoughts on wellbeing and adding harmony to your life. Georgina Pazzi, Education and Wellbeing Consultant and owner of Edumazing, explained Human Literacy and drew us in with her compassion and conviction that children receive the education they need. You will find these interviews on the Hepburn Magazine YouTube and podcast channels. Look for our distinctive logo.

Gone But Not Forgotten Jacqueline Hodges
J
anuary marks the beginning of the school year for many young Australians. And this year is especially important as students re-join their classmates and teachers in the classroom. Last year, teachers and parents alike struggled to ensure all pupils had access to the materials they needed to learn, to meet on zoom, and to pass the year. It was a transformative year, that inspired us to to celebrate the work of Maria Montessori, who brought radical change and transformed education during her time. Today, teaching and education are intrinsic to society. Education for all children is a right under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Yet historically, education and teaching were in the affluent male domain and we learn through history and novels of the struggles that women have faced in pursuing the teaching profession. While Maria Montessori inspires us for bringing new teaching methods, historically, there are many notable female teachers such as Anne Sullivan, Maria Collins, Mary Ward, Mother Teresa, and Princess Diana of Wales. Anne Sullivan, was to initiate and support the formal and continuing education of Helen Keller throughout her life. Marva Collins, who used critical thinking and argumentative dialogue to raise the education standards of black children living in an impoverished district. Mary Ward, a catholic nun who envisaged education of all women in 1609, with the formation of the first Loreta College. Mother Teresa began her journey to help the impoverished as a teacher in Calcutta. Princess Dianna of Wales, known for her immense empathy and compassion and love of children, was a teacher’s assistant in a Montessori school.
12 | Hepburn
Maria Montessori was a leading educator who also brought transformative change to the education system. Maria was one of the first women to enter medical school in Rome in 1890 and qualified as a physician in 1896. It was through her work as a volunteer, that she developed an interest in the needs of children with learning disabilities. Radical at the time, Maria advocated for social reform and support for mentally and developmentally disabled children. She believed their lack of support was the cause of their delinquency.
“We must help the child to act for himself, will for himself, think for himself; this is the art of those who aspire to serve the spirit.”
During a period of economic uncertainty, Maria opened the first Children’s House to bring education to children of San Lorenzo, Italy. Rather than offering a strict curriculum, Maria provided an array of activities and learning materials. She believed that children who were placed in an environment where activities were designed to support their natural development had the power to educate themselves. This theory became the foundations of the Montessori Method.
“Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed.” The Montessori Method was translated into 20 languages and with following speaking engagements by Maria, Montessori schools commenced throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States of America. During WWII, in 1946, Maria presented an address to the UNESCO on Education and Peace. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize in 1949, 1950 and 1951.
“Education is the best weapon for peace.” Maria’s approach to education was to inspire children towards a lifelong love of learning, by following their natural developmental, via vertical and individualised self-paced learning. This approach aimed to help students to become confident, responsible, independent learners, who trust in their own abilities.
“It is not true, that I invented what is called the Montessori Method. I have studied the child, I have taken what the child has given me and expressed it, and that is what is called the Montessori Method.” Whether, you favour the Montessori Method or not, this woman made a significant contribution to the education of children and in particular, those with learning disabilities. She made a difference to many.

Trends to follow this Valentine’s Day Kristina Mazalova
T
here is a persistent division of opinion on what Valentine’s Day means. For some, it is a day to celebrate their romantic relationship, for others it is a day of celebrating independence and self-love. Some people perceive the day to be an outdated social construct, and some believe it to be an opportunity to participate in the global enveloping movement of love.
Regardless of our personal beliefs, Valentine’s Day can still be a time to promote and extend kindness and joy – whether that be towards ourselves or others. Whether we embrace the status quo of the day or not, this season can act as a gentle reminder to ourselves to reinforce our beliefs and opinions into more positive ones and redirect our energy towards personally fruitful and fulfilling endeavors. Like with all things in life, we must find the confidence and the energy within ourselves in order to fully capture the momentum of growth. Part of the journey of finding this confidence is about embracing our style and boosting our morale by looking great. Clichés aside, we would like to help you find the motivation to feel and look fabulous this Valentine’s Day. We are not going to focus on what one should or should not wear. Instead, we will focus on providing you with avenues for exploration and self-expression utilising clothing and fashion.
Hepburn | 15
To feel powerful and enigmatic What colours make you feel powerful? What kind of clothing makes you feel like you are in a cinematic reel when walking down the street? What kind of outfit makes you beam at yourself in the mirror? (Don’t forget to blow yourself a kiss and say, ‘I love you’.) You know the feeling of power that comes from clothing. You absolutely do. Remember the last time you felt that feeling. Now capture it and feel it. What are you wearing? What’s happening with your hair? To allow yourself to feel the power means to let go of the fear of taking up space and attracting attention. Letting go of this inhibition is the number one step in order to connect with your true nature and show up in the world how you desire. This Valentine’s Day, say goodbye to trends and listening to what you ought to do and do what you want to do. You want to wear a bright red suit? Go for it. You want to wear a linen white dress? Go for it. You want to dress in expensive embellished pants? Absolutely go for it. Go for what makes you feel proud about who you are, and what motivates you to chase that empowered feeling not only on Valentine’s Day but every day.
To feel comfortable Facing your insecurities about self-love and relationships on this day can be difficult, we get it. We have all been in dark places reminiscing on past relationships, as well as on the relationship we have with ourselves. Reflection is a crucial component of finding comfort within the discomfort. Kindness is equally crucial. To feel comfortable with who you are and who you are with this Valentine’s Day, extend kindness to yourself and others. Do not strap yourself into outfits that you feel like you should wear. Be gentle with your perception of self. Wear clothing that allows you to breathe and be flexible in movement; wear clothing that enables you the peace of mind to ruminate and reflect. The day is already filled with so much stimulus, do
16 | Hepburn
not overwhelm yourself even more by pushing yourself into things that do not feel right. Our advice? Choose to dress in what you know you feel great in. Take that trusty outfit out of the wardrobe, and rock it like it is new.
To feel hopeful If you are not in the right headspace to deal with everything that Valentine’s Day brings with it, it is okay. If you feel that you are not in the right place in life romantically, if you feel that you could be loving yourself more, do not fear that you are not there yet. All good things take time, and perhaps this Valentine’s Day could be leveraged to develop a deeper sense of hope for yourself. On the other hand, if you embrace all that this day brings with it, and feel content with where you are, there is also an opportunity to build deeper hope for the future. To feel hopeful, wear something that inspires you. Wear something that inspires you to live in the moment, something that inspires you to become a better human being, something that inspires you to seek new things. Treat dressing this day as an avenue for self-expression and exploration. Do you look up to someone’s style? Try experimenting with their fashion choices and incorporate them into your outfit this day. Is being ethical and sustainable important to you? Make the intentional choice to wear an outfit that reflects those values. Have you always wanted to try dressing radically different? Do it. This Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to allow yourself to feel inspired and hopeful by challenging your preconceptions, conditioning and comfort. It is also the perfect day to allow others to do the same. Be kind and openminded. After all, this is a day of love. You will look stunning as long as you follow your intuition and set the right intentions for this day.

Reborn or Reformed? Sushmita Sharma
W
e are coming out of a year that was marked by self-isolation, social distancing, and MASKS! Wearing a mask everywhere, changed our lives in numerous ways. The lockdown gave us the opportunity to reflect more on our inner self. Lesser interactions with the outer world put the societal pressures and expectations to where they belong – the trash. On one hand, the lockdown encouraged many women to put away their other favourite mask – Makeup. On the other hand, we saw fashion posts for grocery runs because that’s the only place people were free to go. Regardless of what they chose, women became more of themselves, and lesser of what the society expects them to be.
Hepburn | 19
Celebrities joined the revolution of challenging the standard notions of the society by posting no-makeup selfies and influencing many other women to embrace their natural beauty. All they were wearing then was the COVID Confidence. The self-esteem did not come from makeup anymore, but from within. Is there anything more beautiful than a woman being comfortable in her own skin? I don’t think so. Thanks to the lockdown, women started accepting their true self and challenged the old tyranny of an ideal woman. However, the pandemic is over now. We have bid our goodbyes to 2020 and as we enter 2021, the question arises as to whether women will continue to accept their natural self and leave behind the old cultural standard of beauty or will they revert to their older self as they resume the ‘normal’ life? Will they be Reborn as their older self or Reformed with a new perspective on beauty?
20 | Hepburn
The truth is, there is nothing wrong with whatever you choose as long as you remember to love and truly accept your natural self. Whether you put on a dark purple lipstick or a subtle nude shade, it is your choice and no one is ever entitled to provide their opinion on what or how you should be. What matters is your own opinion about yourself.
Are you wearing makeup to simply accentuate your beauty or are you wearing it to enhance your self-esteem and confidence? Your makeup is not the source of your pride and confidence. You are! Wear makeup because you want to, not because others think you should. In the end, remember it is your body and you have just as much space on this planet as anyone else.
No one, other than yourself can tell you how to be yourself. So, if you wish to be reborn and revert to your old makeup routine, there’s nothing wrong with it. Just don’t make it the reason for your confidence. Remember to give some rest to your skin every now and then, to relax and refresh. If you wish to ditch your lengthy makeup routine altogether, you are not alone. From Kim Kardashian to Gwyneth Paltrow to Jennifer Lopez, celebrities have widely supported the no-makeup trend in many fashion weeks over the past few years. 2020, as one may say, was just the grand finale of this movement so far. The lockdown has given us this great opportunity to reform our makeup style or put it out of the window altogether. The silver lining of the lockdown is that it gave our skin the time to breathe freely again and replenish. So, in 2021, if you are comfortable in your own skin and want to go ‘bare faced’ to work or even on a date, the world is yours to be yourself! Again, whatever you choose, it is only your decision and no one else’s. Wear confidence within yourself not through your makeup. You are beautiful as you are!

To Swipe Right or Not to Swipe Right? Kristina Mazalova
Swiping life is difficult as is. The filtering, the gradual complacency, the sore thumb – they are unavoidable when dating online. The one aspect of online dating that attracts many is the relative anonymity of the process. In a way, online dating allows users to interact with each other without high social stakes. This is achieved by alleviating the pressure of conversation starters and conversation exits and providing a space for individuals to construct their online persona. Dating apps and websites also provide a peace of mind knowing that a user wouldn’t likely meet another user in real life (depending on the user database in a specific location). When in this safe bubble, a user has the choice and the safe space to make decisions that are most suitable and desirable for them. However, the whole game and the playing field change once one comes across someone they know. The game becomes even more complicated when their pre-existing relationship is constrained to something, for example, a working relationship.
Picture this: you are swiping peacefully, without any hesitation or anxiety. You even naturally accelerate your swiping speed at some points. You’ve been through this process several times – it’s nothing new and you probably won’t meet many of these people in real life. That is until a familiar face flashes in front of you, and you urgently stall to make sure it is who you think it is… your colleague. For some, an initial panic may set in. They may start thinking “do I like them?”, “have they swiped right on me?”, “do any of the co-workers know about my profile here?”. These questions arise naturally and serendipitously. Some people may experience a sense of excitement or anticipation. The first thought or question that comes to mind genuinely reflects our insecurities, anxieties, desires or ambitions. Before you go any further, think before you swipe. Rest assured that you have options here. Should you ever come across a colleague on a dating app, remember these pointers in order to tackle the circumstance with the right intentions and peace of mind.
22 | Hepburn
Hepburn | 23
24 | Hepburn
Point 1: Check
Point 3: Conversation
You’ve come across a co-worker. Your thumb is frozen mid-swipe, and you gently release just so as not to accidentally swipe left or right (or even worse – Superlike or similar). Right now, it is important to figure out whether you are attracted to them. This is a seemingly simple thing to decide on but is undoubtedly multifactorial. At this stage, ask yourself – “What am I looking for?”. After you have an answer for that, proceed to think about whether this particular person suits the parameters for what you are looking for – not as a colleague but simply as a human being and an individual.
If you swiped left – congratulations! If you swiped right and never matched – congratulations! Rejection is divine protection. If you decided to swipe right and matched – congratulations! Now you have the choice to begin a conversation, if you wish.
Point 2: Consequences
Starting off with something witty and lighthearted could work in your favour. Whether the first message acknowledges your working relationship is up to you, and is a truly subjective choice. Proceed through the conversation at your own pace and address the fact that you’re colleagues, at your convenience. There is a certain art to bringing the matter up at the right point in the conversation, and having rapport with the other person would help. However, residing in ambiguity could be harmful down the line, so make a wise call as to when the fact needs to be acknowledged. Later, you could express curiosity about why they swiped right on you and what they are looking for. Be mindful of the steps you take but also do not deprive yourself of something potentially great simply out of fear.
Everyone has different intentions when dating online – some people are looking for more meaningful interactions and relationships, and others look for casual intimacy. After you understand what you want, bear in mind that you simply cannot exactly know what the other person’s intentions are for being in the game. Right now would be a good time to analyse the consequences of your potential pairing in your own personal lives. Think about whether it is worth breaking your anonymity, and whether interacting with this specific colleague is worth the potential risk of: a) Not matching in intentions, and b) Losing professional integrity. On the other hand, also look on the bright side and how you do not know what could happen unless you try. You cannot assume what the other person thinks or feels. All in all, understand the barriers and values that must be maintained and communicated in order to uphold personal and professional integrity.
Let’s be honest – ignoring the elephant in the room rarely plays out well. Despite this, jumping into your professional relationship as a conversation starter may be intimidating, overwhelming or initially unnecessary for some. Analyse how well you know this person, and if you feel comfortable enough – message them.
Remember your professional integrity and stay faithful to your heart.

Phoenix Sutra Sushmita Sharma
Doesn’t it feel like yesterday when we stood with open arms to welcome 2021? And now February is right around the corner. February, the month of love, chocolates, flowers, and red hearts, many MANY red hearts on every single thing. The Legends of the Phoenix Marked by the love and joy of Valentine’s Day, February is the sugary, sweet time of the year – with all those candies and cupcakes, quite literally! Whether you are in a healthy and happy relationship with the love of your life or whether you are waiting for the right person to knock on the door of your heart, Valentine’s Day is the perfect occasion to express love. Not just to your partner, but to yourself as well. Just because your soulmate is waiting for you just as you are waiting for them, does not mean you have no reason to celebrate the one day dedicated to pure love. And even if you have the love of your life rubbing your feet as you read this article, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t fall in love with yourself all over again. Being single often comes with the negative connotation of loneliness and desperation. What many people fail to realise is that being single can be a blissful experience that makes you more independent and allows you to invest time in your own improvement. And for those who are happily in their dreamland of love, remember that a healthy relationship lets you breathe freely and have your own space when you need it. So, this Valentine’s Day, let your inner Phoenix rise and give you a new meaning of power and hope through solitude. Whether in love with someone or waiting for ‘the one’, this Phoenix Sutra is crafted for all the women out there who deserve to be loved, by themselves first.
26 | Hepburn
With its wondrously undeniable beauty, a Phoenix is a symbol of hope, power, grace and solitude. For a Phoenix, there is no end to life but only new beginnings one after another. Reviving from its own ashes, a Phoenix signifies the importance of moving forward from the loss and grief of the past and believing in new opportunities that the future holds. With a hue of gold and red in its marvellous feathers, a Phoenix is a rising sun after a dark night. The Phoenix has found its context in many mythological texts from Egypt to China. In every legend, what remains constant is the resilience of the Phoenix in the times of pain and its ability to let the pain die and rise renewed from it. The Phoenix, even when aged and tired, never gives up on its desire to become better than what it currently is. It teaches us the importance of believing in our abilities and gathering the strength to let go of the past and learn from it as we move on with a new perspective. It relies only on itself to heal and live. The Phoenix demonstrates optimism and freedom from the pain of life. And so, far it flies with its new wings
“From the midst of destruction, I became the creator of myself. From the midst of darkness, I became my own source of light.” | 27 CristenHepburn Rodgers
Becoming a Phoenix A Phoenix redefines the journey of loss, hurt, and finding hope in the most distressing times of life. It transcends towards victory from the most difficult situation. But the most important thing we learn from a Phoenix is that it never quits working on itself. So, this Valentine’s Day, give yourself the gift of becoming more self-reliant and confident. This Valentine’s Day, become a Phoenix. In your current circumstances, whether you are in love or waiting for it, there is always room for some improvement. Remember, no one in this world can complete you but yourself. You are only capable of giving love to others when you love yourself truly. If you recently came out of a long-term relationship, burn the pain and move past it with your newer self who has learnt some important lessons of life. Celebrate the love you have for yourself before you offer it to someone else.
Once you become a Phoenix, you are competent. You are resilient. You are strong and powerful. You are capable of achieving any milestone in this world. You are complete. You are both Yin and Yang within yourself.
28 | Hepburn
Celebrating Valentine’s Day as a Phoenix Loving yourself can be as challenging as loving someone else. In fact, it is more challenging than that because here, there is no exit strategy. It is just you with yourself and you must equally love your flaws as much as you love your strengths. The journey of self-love requires efforts and commitment but it is equally rewarding in terms of empowerment, confidence, and self-esteem. The love you seek from the outer world actually truly manifests from within you. This Valentine’s Day, before you buy a gift for your partner, take these little steps first, to give the gift of love to yourself.
Celebrate the love you have for yourself before you offer it to someone else.
Hepburn | 29
1. Care
3. Appreciate
Be like a Phoenix but don’t burn out in this heat. Remember to keep your body hydrated, in and out. Take care of your skin with natural and organic ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, and coconut. Self-care is the first step in the journey of self-love. Just as you care for your loved ones, care for yourself. Pay attention to the things you like and dislike. Get enough sleep and eat healthy food. Most importantly, burn the negative vibes around you and rise above with the positive shine in your wings.
As magnificent as the Phoenix, you are worthy and beautiful! Be grateful for your existence and appreciate the little steps you take every day to transform to your better self. Write a letter to yourself in which you enlist all the things you find beautiful within yourself. Express your gratitude towards that beauty of your heart that makes you who are. Appreciate everything you do for yourself and for others. Remember, you are enough for yourself.
2. Accept
4. Pamper
Acceptance comes from truly acknowledging your strengths and weaknesses. Just like the rebirth of the Phoenix symbolizes its belief in its true and infinite potential, you too should believe in your capability. You can begin by maintaining a journal and noting down the areas where you excel and those where you need to improve. This will help you build your self-worth and release any hidden anxieties too. The more you acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses, the more you get to know yourself. When you accept your inner, authentic self, you move closer to falling in love with yourself.
No amount of love is enough. Pamper yourself by indulging in some glorious pleasures of life. It is time to overdo it and no, there is nothing wrong with that. Whether your best friends are named Diamonds or Pearls, meet them! Treat yourself with your favourite piece of jewellery or go to that fine-dining restaurant that has been on your list for months. Whatever it is that you wouldn’t usually do, do it this Valentine’s Day. The Phoenix knows the Sun is too far in the sky, yet it never stops flying towards it in the hope that one day they will meet. Let the Phoenix within you fly to new heights this Valentine’s Day.
Remember, from a million broken pieces, a beautiful mosaic is created.
Like the Phoenix, you fly. Like the Phoenix, you never give up. Like the Phoenix, you stand alone, strong, powerful, and magnificent!

Was That Really a Break? Sally McGrath Two whole weeks! How delicious, you are planning to read a book or two, relax by the pool and refresh ready to move into the New Year. So, are you one of the women who took time off at Christmas, and are now feeling like you have been through a tornado, whilst January is still the current month on the calendar? Perhaps you’ve returned to your work routine feeling like, what break, I missed that part of taking time off! Your break was full of entertaining and conversations, fun, yet tiring. Ladies, sadly you are not alone. The experience just described is all too common amongst women at this time each year. Now you are left reaching for any pill, potion or quick fix energy booster to "find your zing” and some energy to simply function as your routine returns. Week by week the workload and office builds and by the start of February, you are already feeling stressed, exhausted, potentially heading down the spiral to burnout.
What Can You Do? Here are three easy suggestions to implement:
1. Prioritise Sleep
3. Nutrition for the Season
Getting the right amount of sleep for your needs is absolutely essential. Go to bed early (an hour before you usually would), reduce or abstain from alcohol to give your body the best opportunity for a restorative sleep and have a cool shower prior to bed to reduce your body temperature. No pre-sleep scrolling or emails either! Ensure good airflow and darkness in your bedroom.
The warmer weather is fantastic for seasonal produce, that’s light, delicious and combined in a creative way, absolutely nutritious and delicious. Combining summer vegetables and fruits in a salad and adding some of your preferred protein makes meal preparation simple and quick. Prepare some leftovers for your lunch the next day, whip up a smoothie to grab on your way in the morning and you have set yourself up with energy for the day ahead.
2. Move Your Body The warmer evenings are a perfect time to stroll after your evening meal and also help you avoid any unnecessary nibbling at food or the temptation of alcohol for relaxation. The cooler temperature in the evening helps to relax your nervous system and removing yourself from the distractions of devices and screens will also support your preparation for a good night’s sleep. As the Italians say, “La Passeggiata”; an evening walk around the neighbourhood, wonderful for connection with your family and community and has the added benefit to support digestion.
Ladies, if you identify with desperately needing another break on returning to work, it sounds like your habits and patterns have not changed, keep this up and you are on the fast track to fatigue, exhaustion and burnout. If you need some support to keep you focused to reframe poor habits; it’s time to take action. Let’s talk; I have been there.
Being busy and burning out is not a badge of honour. Hepburn | 33
IS THIS YOU? Drag yourself to work Irritable and impatient Lack motivation & energy Drink to relieve stress Eat on the run

We often look to the New Year as a fresh start, a new beginning filled with personal and family renewal resolutions. In 2021, with all that we have endured in 2020, it is even more essential to consider what makes us happy, secures our future and protects our families, friends and communities. It is not often that the whole of Australia or the World is forced into such an uncomfortable paradigm shift that causes such disruption to our both personal and professional lives. Some of us decided to look outside the capital cities and there seems a definite trend of migration from the city to the regional areas of each state of Australia. People are moving and we can see part of this as per the ABS Report: “June 2020, Regional Internal Migration Estimates, Provisional” with key statistics such as: 85,500 people moved interstate in the three months to the end of June 2020. 14,800 less people moved interstate compared with the June 2019 quarter. Capital cities had a net loss of 10,500 people from internal migration, the largest quarterly net loss on record. Last year, we were forced to consider new ways of living; keeping healthy, doing business, and working through this journey. We have had to embrace change and technology.
The idea of working from home permanently or in the future for a majority of our working week is a real game changer. It carries opportunities. in abundance, for us all to explore different ways to do business and not be geographically bound to a location. This will and has enabled people to consider their health, happiness and financial position by moving into the regional areas of Australia or Interstate with a view to work from home, enjoy reduced living costs, improved lifestyle and still provide for their families and futures. The advent and acceptance of technology from all ages with such options as zoom, skype and other online meeting providers has shown people they can be connected without all the travel, time spent travelling and have more freedom with choosing a geographic area to live. The regional areas of Australia, no matter which States you explore and research, offer wonderful opportunities to relocate into communities providing value for money, services, education and a sense of community. Country values, lifestyle, travel time savings, and friendly communities all offer a real sea change from the grind of living in cities. We all have had so much time to think and consider the way we live, and what is important. For some of us, regional Australia is the answer. Regional areas have easy access to the city, through public or private transport and the daily commute has changed with working from home to a more flexible arrangement that is open to negotiation in most cases.

In some ways, it’s easy to feel like a millionaire in the regional areas of Australia. The lower cost of housing allows people to enjoy a quality of life that just isn’t sustainable if purchasing a similar home in the city. If we look at Victoria, as one example you can drive to anywhere in the State within a day. So, the idea of weekend tranquillity, working from home and only travelling to the city once or twice a week really appeals to those moving to the country. When I look at Australia State by State, regional areas have wonderful townships which are real gems for people to consider, move to and live-in great communities. Embracing change is challenging, but the circumstances of 2020 created new business models and challenged our old ways of thinking. Unlocking the potential of all Australians, improving lifestyles, mental health and achieving happiness are some of the wonderful outcomes of the challenges we have all faced in different ways.
Capital cities had a net loss of 10,500 people from internal migration, the largest quarterly net loss on record
We have witnessed, a country-wide paradigm shift removing the limit on how, where, why and when we work as long as performance and targets are achieved. We have lived through the results of COVID-19 in 2020 with its ongoing impact on our lives. When seeking your new beginnings for 2021, give yourself a real and fresh start, a forward momentum and an opportunity to consider country living and the benefits it could bring to you. So, explore your options and enjoy 2021.

Balancing Your 2021 Personal Financial Wealth Resolutions Jacqueline Hodges
2020 was a wipe out as most of us suffered huge financial loss. Some readers will say “We lost jobs”, “We lost investment value”, “We lost investment income”. Others will say, “Well, our credit card debt sky-rocketed”, as lockdown caused an online spending spree. We took home loan repayment holidays only to be stung with a growing debt as interest still accrued. It’s time to close out the 2020 mentality and start 2021 with a healthy personal financial plan. After the year that 2020 was, you may not have financial balance in mind or you may not know where to begin. There is no need to worry, we’ll step you through building your 2021 balanced personal financial wealth plan.
Start a Personal Budget A personal budget is a summary of your income and expenses, that allows you to plan your saving and your spending. Once you have created a budget, it becomes a useful tool to track your financial behaviours and help achieve your personal goals. A budget also allows you to manage your debt repayments and plan to reduce that debt. If you have funds available, it is good for the soul to set aside a part of the budget for donations. Here are some simple steps to start your personal budget.
1
Gather your financial documents
2
Calculate income
3
List all your expenses
4
Total net income
5
Warning
1. Gather your financial documents: To start your personal budget, you will need to gather your financial documents, e.g.: Bank statements Credit card statements Investment accounts Payslips Recent bills Receipts from the last three months Home loan statements Car loan statements
Hepburn | 39
40 | Hepburn
2. Calculate your income
4. Total Net Income
Include all income you regularly receive and income from any other sources, such as child support or social security. Use your bank statements, receipts, payslips and any other information from the last three months to identify your income.
Now subtract the total spending from total income and you will have an estimate of your net monthly income.
Wages Investment Income Child Support
5. Warning Will Robinson! WARNING: If your spending is more than your income, you will need to adjust your spending. Work through the list of spending. Look to see if there is anything that you can reduce.
Make a list of the income and record the amount you received. Total your income for each month.
If there was an unusual one-off payment, such as paying for a new car in one payment or if you paid a large amount of your home loan, then these should be removed from your new budget. If you still have these debts, then allocate a reasonable monthly amount for that item.
3. List your spending
Start a Debt Reduction Plan
Use your bank statements, receipts, and credit card statements from the last three months to identify your spending.
Make 2021 the year to regain control of your personal finances. Focus on reducing your debt. Right now, interest rates are at an all-time low. At the time of writing, the Reserve Bank announced an interest rate of 0.10% and the banks are passing on this debt.
Social Securities Pensions
Mortgage payments or rent Car payments Insurance Groceries Utilities Entertainment Personal care Eating out Childcare Transportation costs Travel
Set your goal to get out of Debt Getting out of debt is a personally rewarding and liberating feeling. Not only that, once you have paid off that debt, you will have more money to play with, to save, to give or to invest. Following are our tips to start reducing your debt: Set up a debt repayment plan Switch credit cards to lower interest rate or 0% rate cards
Credit card payments
Sell any unused items (check out local Facebook groups)
Savings
Tighten your spending belt
Emergency Funds
Turn your hobby into an earning machine
Private Health Insurance
Commit to the plan and stick with it
Pet Costs Any other expenses Make a list of the spending and record the amount you paid. Total your spending for each month.
Hepburn | 41
“Commit to the plan.” TIP: With the home loan interest rates so low, now is the time to pump extra cash into your loan to reduce the principal component. You’ll be surprised! Once you have a debt management plan, you will find your stress levels and productivity at work or in your business improve.
Start a Savings Plan You should set aside at least 10% of your income each month. Set up a separate bank account, so that you can see your savings grow. While the interest rates don’t seem to make savings worthwhile at present, at some stage interest rates will increase and you will have established a saving behaviour. You need to know why you are saving and how much you want to save. Establish a savings goal, such as “I want to save $20,000 to go on a holiday to the Lizard Island” or “I want to save $1,500 from each pay to save for that exquisite strand of Golden South Sea Pearls from Paspaley, ”. If you don’t have a need for the extra savings, think about placing this into your superannuation fund instead. But remember, unless you have reached retirement age or one of the conditions of release, this money must remain in the superannuation fund. See these useful tips to start your savings plan: Establish your savings goal Set up a separate saving bank account Reduce your discretionary spending Look for a bank account that has no bank fees Regularly review the interest rate payable. If interest rates go up, switch to the higher interest earning account You’ll be surprised! Once you have a savings plan in place, you will find watching your savings grow will bring a smile to your face.
42 | Hepburn
Start an Investment Plan An investment plan allows you to grow your wealth through an investment portfolio and enjoy a diversified income stream. For example, if you buy shares, you may receive dividend income or if you invest in a managed fund, you may receive a trust distribution. Set aside an amount from each pay that will go towards your investment portfolio. Your investment portfolio may include cash, property, shares, unit trusts, cryptocurrency, gold, and collectibles. See these useful tips to start your investment plan: Speak with a financial adviser Learn about the stock market (the Australian Stock Exchange has online training) Read investment books Join an investment club, but check them out thoroughly Understand your personal attitude to risk Set up a savings account for your investment plan Investing can be risky, so we highly recommend that you speak with a financial adviser who understands the type of investment that you are interested in. You wouldn’t go to a Toyota repair shop if you own a Mercedes Benz. Likewise, if you want to invest in gold, speak with an adviser that specialises in gold. With an investment plan in place, you will find the investment value may go up and down, but you will learn more if you regularly record the changes in your investment’s value.
Start a Giving Plan While establishing a giving plan may not help with your personal financial wealth plan, it will let you enjoy extra credits to your moral bank account. Giving to a charity adds to your
feelings of kindness and you will be helping an organisation achieve its charitable objectives and you could be supporting another human being. Better still, if you give a gift to a tax deductible gift recipient, you may be entitled to a tax deduction for your donation. With a giving plan in place, you will feel your well of kindness and empathy grow.
SMARTER Goals Goal setting is an important part of life and essential in developing your personal financial wealth plan. Goal Setting helps us align our desires and wants with an actionable plan and timeframe to achieve them. This time of year, we all make resolutions, yet hardly any resolution survives part one month. Overcome this New Year’s Syndrome with SMARTER Goals. SMARTER is a mnemonic acronym.
The New Year is a great time to reset your financial goals and revise your monthly budget. New Year’s resolutions come and go. Be honest with yourself! Be realistic! Make small goals that are more achievable. These will be your stepping stones to achieving your larger goals. Be SMARTER. He comes to power supported by his wife, First Lady Jill Biden, an American educator. Vice-President Kamala Harris will become a strong role model for all American women as the first Female, first African American, and first South Asian. woman to serve as Vice President of the United States.
“There will be a resistance to your ambition, there will be people who say to you, ‘You are out of your lane.’ They are burdened by only having the capacity to see what has always been instead of what can be – but don’t let that burden you.” These women have the power to influence major international decisions and those decisions will impact Australia, our closest allies and those with whom we do not trade. It will be interesting to see how our world reacts. These women will also be amongst those who determine fashion trends and their inauguration Cashmere frock and coat outfits do not disappoint. She is a woman of great dignity and spoke with love, compassion and empathy for her fellow Americans. She spoke of reflecting on the responsibility as a mother to encourage, give strength and teach values of kindness. “It is our duty as adults and parents to ensure the children have the best opportunities to lead fulfilling and healthy lives.” During her term as First Lady, among the policy initiatives she launched the Be Best Program, which focused on Wellbeing, Online Safety and Opioid Abuse to help take care of the next generation.

Leadership and Management – Emotional Intelligence & Your Team Jacqueline Hodges
While it may have been difficult at times, we have over the last year enjoyed the relaxed, unstructured atmosphere of working from home. We have developed a COVID-confidence, avoiding make-up, fancy hairdos and business suits. We have unashamedly adapted to conference calls from our bedrooms with a business up top look. We have accepted children interrupting our thoughts, our meetings and our business day. After all, they can’t be expected to understand that Mummy or Daddy can’t talk to them right now. But life is about to change again. We are returning to working in the office. As we begin to return to working in the office, we may become aware of the sacrifices that we will make. We haven’t been working in a structured 9 to 5 way. We may miss our children and their constant interruptions. We may miss the flexibility of choosing when our day starts and ends. We may miss not having to dress appropriately. We will certainly miss that time gained whilst not having to commute during peak hour. As we begin to return to working in the office, we may also become aware of our personal foibles and idiosyncrasies or recognise the peculiarities of others within our team. After all, we haven’t been working with each other directly, personally, closely for some time. We will all rejoice in seeing each other again, but we will also need to adjust. As managers and team leaders, our return to team work will be a challenge as the team reforms. We will need to help our team rebuild trust and develop self-awareness, as they adjust to the close, physical proximity of colleagues, as the barriers of social distancing begin to fall. As managers and team leaders, we will
Based on Tuckman’s Team Development Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing Process Model, 1965
not only need to draw upon the strength of our own Emotional Intelligence but ensure the development of the team’s EI. We have become self-reliant, self-regulating, and will now need to adapt to the closeness and availability of our colleagues. As managers and team leaders, we may notice a drop in productivity during the adjustment period as teams reform.
Tuckman’s Group Development Model As managers and team leaders, as your team reforms, you may be reminded of Tuckman’s Group Development Model. The basis of this model is that team development follows a process of forming, storming, norming and performing. Forming: The team meets and becomes acquainted with each other, the opportunities and challenges, and seek direction from a leader. Storming: The team may question the actions or decisions of the leader, individuals may voice their opinions, conflict may arise between team members as they build trust Norming: The team is aware they share a common goal and team members take responsibility and strive to work for the success of the team’s goals. Performing: The team is motivated and the team members are now competent, autonomous and make decisions without supervision.

Emotional Intelligence There are several models of emotional intelligence: Ability Model: Mayer, Salovey, and Caruso 2004 Mixed Model: Daniel Goleman 1998 Trait Model: Petrides 2007 The Ability Model suggests that leaders need an ability to accurately perceive emotions, generate emotions, understand emotions, and regulate emotions. 1. Perceiving emotions – the ability to detect and decipher emotions in faces, pictures, voices, and cultural artifacts—including the ability to identify one’s own emotions 2. Using emotions – the ability to harness emotions to facilitate various cognitive activities, such as thinking and problem-solving 3. Understanding emotions – the ability to comprehend the language of emotion and to appreciate complicated relationships among emotions 4. Managing emotions – the ability to regulate emotions in both ourselves and in others. Goleman’s Mixed Model includes a set of learned emotional competencies within each construct of EI. 1. Self-awareness: You are self-confident. You recognise your own emotions, strengths, weaknesses, values and goals, thoughts and behaviours, and understand the impact on others 2. Self-regulation: You are intuitive. You regulate, control and redirect disruptive emotions and impulsive feelings and behaviours in healthy ways and adapt to changing circumstances
4. Relationship management: You are inspiring. You communicate clearly and with influence, develop and maintain good relationships, inspire others, and manage conflict. Trait EI refers to an individual’s self-perceptions of their emotional abilities and is measured by self report.
Building Your Emotional Intelligence for Team Success Developing your own emotional intelligence will help you be a better team leader. As you develop the ability to recognize and understand your own emotions, you will find it easier to appreciate how others are feeling, improve how you communicate and help your personal and professional relationships to flourish. If you find that you struggle with your emotions you can: 1. Learn to relieve stress 2. Learn to meditate 3. Practice mindfulness 4. Pay attention to others Managing your stress will help you stay balanced, focused, and in control of your life. Meditation will help you to relax, and teach you how to harness your emotions. Mindfulness helps shift your thoughts toward an appreciation of the moment, your physical and emotional sensations, and brings a larger perspective on life. Mindfulness complements self-awareness, while it helps you be calm and focused. By paying attention to others, you will gain insight into your own emotional state as well as your values and beliefs.
3. Social awareness: You are empathetic. You pick up on emotional cues, needs, and concerns of other people, feel comfortable socially, and recognize a group’s power dynamics

Team Capabilities
As we return to work, as managers and team leaders it will be our responsibility to ensure the team is working effectively and are now performing. Researchers, Vanessa Urch Druskat and Steven B. Wolff (2001) identified the three conditions to help team members develop their emotional intelligence: trust among members, a sense of group identity and a sense of group efficacy. Having a team that is emotionally intelligent, will help with performance, as the team members, whether individually or collaboratively, will work to resolve issues, help each other to perform, and seek to reach goals and targets.
There are a number of ways to help develop the team. Job rotation may help team members understand the roles within the team, improve communication between team members and develop empathy for team members. Mission and vision statements help the team to understand its identity and purpose. Formal praise of achievement, allows members to recognise each other’s accomplishments and develop respect for the team. Building team trust is a critical success factor. Trust can be achieved through completing small but difficult tasks. Trust can also be developed by doing things outside of the office; have a team lunch or start a team sport.
So, as your team returns to work, remember they will be forming or reforming. Productivity may slump at first as the team loops through to norming and performing. It will be up to you to guide and develop the team. You may not be able to force emotional intelligence on your team, but you can give your team every opportunity to develop by creating the conditions that foster it.
“Colleagues who are in each other’s lives work harder. You’re no longer a collection of individuals who gather in an office but a true community pulling for group success.” Grant Gordon

Rising from 2020 Sushmita Sharma
For what it’s worth, 2020 has been an enlightening experience indeed. It challenged our perseverance and made us look at life with a wholly refined perspective. Coming out of an exceptionally overwhelming year that 2020 was, there are many lessons that we have learnt and many that will remain with us till the end of time. Like a Phoenix, we rise from the ashes of what we lost in 2020 and fly towards 2021 with new hopes of what we can become. Hope is all we can hold on to as we enter a new year. Hope to be normal again, hope to be able to freely travel again, hope to meet our friends and family again without looking at Government updates, hope to build a better and safer tomorrow for us and the upcoming generations. Hope and many lessons are all we take from 2020, and move towards a better year. So, here are 5 key takeaways from 2020 that we must take with us as we embark upon 2021.
1. You are your first priority Emphasised before every flight is the instruction of putting your oxygen mask first before you assist anyone else. As much as it is applicable during the flight, it is essential to remember in life as well. To be able to save anyone else, you must save yourself first. Keeping yourself safe and taking care of yourself is not selfish, but necessary. In the solitude of 2020, we learnt to reflect upon the importance of protecting our own energy and health. Indulge in your ‘me time’ whenever you get a chance. Whether it means going to a spa or just meditating in the silence of the day, take out time for yourself where you give rest to your
60 | Hepburn
mind, body, and soul. Positive or negative, every emotion carries an insight within itself that we must not ignore. Listen to your heart and value what it says. Remember that you can only listen to your soul when your mind is in silence. So, silence the chaos of your daily life and meditate to listen to your own heart. Taking care of yourself should be your first priority in everything you do in 2021.
2. Learn and Adapt Dominated by the global pandemic, 2020 led many businesses to shut down permanently. The year highlighted the significance of resilience in life and business, as well. Planning is important in any business but plans fail due to unforeseen internal and external factors. What we learnt from 2020 is to adapt and keep moving forward. We learnt to go with the flow and be a little more flexible in life. Whether you’re in 2020 or any other year, life has always been unpredictable and situations will always keep changing. Especially in your workplace, you demonstrate true leadership style when you thrive under pressure by being flexible and adaptive. So, in the next year, when you find yourself amidst chaotic situations, navigate where you can adapt and keep some ‘backup’ plans to keep moving forward. Just remember that you are responsible for creating your opportunities.
“We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails.” Dolly Parton
Hepburn | 61
3. Appreciate little things
5. Nothing lasts forever
Remember the infamous toilet paper war in the beginning of the lockdown? Uncertainty creates chaos. Sometimes, the innate human desire for safety and stability drive people to take impetuous albeit irrational measures to protect their survival.
Just as this present second, everything in life is temporary. One after the other, things come and go. Whether good or bad, nothing in this world is permanent. This pandemic won’t last forever, the social distancing won’t last forever, the industry downfall will not last forever. Today we are here, tomorrow we’ll again see a new sunrise. Don’t lose your hope and positivity over one year that may not have been the best for you.
Panic buying during the pandemic taught us to appreciate little things in life, as nothing is predictable or constant. Life is not meant to be lived by taking it for granted. Whether it is telling someone you love them when you see them, or as little and as simple as having brunch with your girlfriends on a Sunday, anything can be taken away any second. Everything in life must be treasured and preserved, for you never know when it may be taken away. So, let 2021 be the year to start practicing gratitude for all the little and big things in life.
4. Communication is vital for survival Social distancing made us realise the importance of fostering human connections in our society. While spending time with ourselves was indeed a blessing in disguise, we all craved the human touch. The lack of warmth from social connections led to increased anxieties and depression amongst the world. Human connections give us a sense of belonging in the society and make us more compassionate. As social creatures, we are all meant to be together, live together, and grow together. Entering 2021, remember to nurture the meaningful relations in your personal as well as professional life. Reach out to your old friends more often and make new ones as well. Treat others with kindness and compassion, for every human being deserves love and respect.
62 | Hepburn
As you enter 2021, keep your head high and embrace the new opportunities with a warm and welcoming heart. With every stage of life comes a new lesson, take it, love it, learn from it and keep moving.

Exploring Tai Chi With its origins in ancient China, Tai chi, otherwise known as “moving meditation” is an integration of slow, flowing body movements, rhythmic breathing, and a relaxed mind. Although it was initiated as a form of martial arts, today it is practiced to soothe the mind, body, and soul through various body movements and breathing patterns that stimulate the flow of qi or chi (life energy) within the body. Tai chi for Anger Management The flow of this inner energy builds your inner strength and relaxes you from the inside out. This meditation in motion transcends you to a state where you can carefully observe the life energy flowing in your body like water in a river. Often, we perform our daily activities, not realising how much effort each of our muscles and bones is making to perform those activities. Tai chi, an active meditation, focuses our attention to all these efforts in motion through its slow movements. There are 108 movements or forms in Tai chi, paired with many breathing techniques (qigong) that activate your body energy internally. Several scientific studies have shown that Tai chi, when practiced regularly, can boost your mood, alleviate stress and anxiety, and improve your overall fitness by increasing your muscle strength and flexibility. It is not as intense as other forms of martial arts and can be easily practised at the comfort of your home. However, if you wish to learn advanced Tai chi, there are many training institutions in Australia where you can attend paid sessions. For beginners, there are free online classes that you can attend however, it is recommended that you practice this activity in a group, to stay motivated. There is no equipment required at the beginner’s level; just put on some comfortable clothes and shoes that allow your body to move freely. 64 | Hepburn
Anger, stress, and anxiety are not comfortable emotions but they are a part of us as human beings. While expressing your emotions is healthy, expressing your negative emotions may not always be constructive for your health. Tai chi works as an anger management therapy for your mind and body as it makes you conscious of your existence and life energy within you. It brings your body in total harmony with your mind and soul, thereby releasing stress and yielding multiple physical and mental health benefits like improving your balance, sleep quality, increasing bone density and cardiovascular health, and decreasing blood pressure. Tai chi can also be used as an effective self defense technique. So, explore Tai chi to release the stress and anger from your life. To begin, you may choose online classes however we do recommend you seek guidance from an experienced Tai chi instructor before beginning the practice to reap full benefits of this slow and graceful activity.

There are few young women who consciously stand up for their beliefs and raise their voice enough to make the world listen. Malala Yousafzai is one of these young women. You may not remember her family name but everyone knows of whom we speak when we say the name Malala. In this article, we wish to honour Malala for her voice and for advocating for female education in a country and at a time when this was not accepted.

Malala lived in a small town in Pakistan where her father was a teacher at a girls’ school. She was 11 years old when the Taliban took over the town and banned education for girls. At just 15 years of age, Malala spoke out publicly on behalf of girls and their right to education.
Jacqueline Hodges
“Let us pick up our books and pens. They are our most powerful weapons.” To quash her voice, she became a target of the Taliban and was shot in the head. But this young woman survived and now lives in the United Kingdom.
“The terrorists thought that they would change our aims and stop our ambitions, but nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage were born.” Whilst recovering in a UK hospital, UN Special Envoy for Global Education, Gordon Brown visited her and launched the “I am Malala” appeal to demand that all children enjoy the right to education. The petition contains three demands:
Malala Yousafzai “We call on Pakistan to agree to a plan to deliver education for every child. We call on all countries to outlaw discrimination against girls. We call on international organisations to ensure the world's 61 million out-of-school children are in education by the end of 2015.” Any ordinary young woman would remain quiet, may even become reclusive. Yet Malala, continued to speak and advocate on behalf of girls and their right to education. In 2013, she was awarded the International Children’s Peace Prize for her advocacy on children's rights. That same year, on her 16th birthday, she delivered a speech to the United Nations asking those leaders to change their policies on education and women’s rights and advocated against illiteracy, poverty and terrorism. The day was dubbed Malala Day, but in the spirit of her true character, Malala announced it was not her day, but the day for every woman, boy and girl who have stood for their rights.
Hepburn | 67
“Malala day is not my day. Today is the day of every woman, every boy and every girl who have raised their voice for their rights.” For her bravery and advocacy, Malala became an international symbol of the fight for girls’ education. Just two years after being shot, in December 2014, Malala became the youngest person to receive a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and in 2017, Secretary-General António Guterres designated Malala as a United Nations Messenger of Peace to help raise the awareness of the importance of girls’ education. She and her father co-founded the Malala Fund to bring awareness to the social and economic impact of girls' education and to empower girls to demand change. She has traveled to many countries to meet girls fighting poverty, wars, child marriage and gender discrimination. The Fund invests in developing country educators and activists, and continues to advocate on behalf of all girls and hold leaders accountable for their promises. Last year in 2020, Malala graduated from Oxford University. She will continue her fight for education and equality to create a world where all girls can learn and lead.
“No child should have to die for going to school. Nowhere should teachers fear to teach or children fear to learn. Together, we can change the picture.”
Malala may be a name we will not forget but her petition, the right for all children to receive education, is one that we must remember and support. Malala’s memoir “I Am Malala: the Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban”, co-written with British journalist Christina Lamb, was published in 2013. A children’s version has also been published under the title “I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World”.

How the Cosmopolitan Made Its Comeback Mel How Mel How is the Founder and Director of The Cocktail Shop Discover the Cosmopolitan and other bottled cocktails on thecocktailshop.com.au

Remember Sex and the City? It was the show that taught us everything we needed to know about designer clothes, dating, friendship and, of course, cocktails. And while it was the show that turned Sarah Jessica Parker into a fashion icon, don’t forget that other icon – the Cosmopolitan. Sips on a Cosmo between sex talk and shoe stories became the done thing. We cried and laughed and cringed through six glorious seasons, tasting every sip of every cocktail vicariously through the Fab Four. It was the cocktail they turned to on birthdays and in moments of regret, “Another Cosmopolitan, please!” As pretty and sophisticated as the characters it was inextricably linked to, the Cosmo became a symbol of success, independence and female comradery. Uninhibited women in their thirties, gallivanting around New York, doing as they please and drinking pink cocktails from glassware on stems as thin and long as their heels. It was glorious. Like so many great things to come out of the 80’s, the Cosmopolitan stepped out of the fluoro-soaked decade with style. The blend of vodka, Cointreau, cranberry juice and lime was invented by New York bartender Toby Cecchini, and quickly became the most popular cocktail in London and New York after drawing the attention of bartenders everywhere. The 90’s was a blur of Cosmos, right up until bartenders grew sick of them and people stopped ordering them for fear of having to apologise. It’s a strange thing when zeitgeisty turns to hated. The list of cringeworthy things to come out of the 20th Century is endless (think men’s fashion in the 70’s and Demi Moore in Striptease, for God’s sake!), but the Cosmo? What were those bartenders thinking, hating on something so pink and fabulous? The mind boggles. As a cocktail that became wrapped up in the identity of striving career woman, it was inevitable that something would reinvigorate its image. That something would of course be
Madonna, photographed at a Sony Grammy Awards after-party sipping on a Cosmo at the World-famous Rainbow Room in Manhattan. The only thing bartenders could do to avoid making them was literally refuse, and they did. Like everything trendy, the Cosmopolitan became passé eventually and drifted into oblivion. Now, twenty years on, it’s making a triumphant comeback to rival the scrunchie. What was cast aside as a girly drink for two decades is now back in pop culture. Bartenders are no longer knocking them, and celebrities like Jennifer Lopez have been spotted imbibing. It shouldn’t be that surprising that the Cosmo is back. We’re in the depths of a cocktail renaissance and bartenders have been reintroducing all the lost and forgotten classics. They know that all they need is a pop star, celeb or supermodel to be seen sipping and fans scramble to get their lips around one. Instant notoriety. If you’re ready to try a Cosmo and want to know how one tastes, it's the perfect blend of sweet, tart and sour. Perfectly refreshing, especially when served ice cold in a chilled martini glass, making it a superb alternative to a Rosé on a summer day. See, it’s not just a fashion accessory after all. With Cosmos cool again, we’ll be seeing more trendy drink brands landing in local bottlo’s and online. Non-alcoholic cocktail bases are popping up, making it simple to just add alcohol and shake-up a Cosmo. For those that can’t be bothered with the fuss of measuring and shaking, keep your eye out for ready to drink, bottled Cosmos you simply chill and serve. Either way, Cosmos are set to be all the rage this summer as Aussies find ways to add some glamour to their home imbibing. It may be impossible to popularise the Cosmo as much as they did in the ‘80s, 90’s or early naughties, but the second coming of the Cosmo is set whether those pesky bartenders like it or not. It’s time to channel your inner Carrie Bradshaw and prepare yourself for a nostalgic reunion. The Cosmo is back in vogue. Hepburn | 79

Feast the Basalt Plains Neil Churches
The western district of Victoria is one of the richest farming districts of the world. It’s dark volcanic soil vigorously supporting whatever grows or grazes from or on it. Those who have lived there for generations appreciate its quiet beauties. The subtle shifts of climate, the qualities of its vast cloudscapes. For the traveller, this space is easily overlooked by the larger glamours to the north and south: Gariwerd/Grampians and the Great Ocean Road. These two remarkable places are now filled by those looking to enjoy startling landscapes. The basalt plains of the western district are quieter, but equally remarkable. One of the largest volcanic fields in the world, with around 5,500 craters, from Hamilton to Mt Gambier, Ballarat to Geelong. The cuisine of this region is being remade by new artisans, working with local produce, global sensibilities, ancient techniques and recipes. It is a quiet change that matches its landscape. Feast The Basalt Plains is a new gastronomy tour that brings this landscape and cuisine to the sophisticated traveller over a four day journey. Local knowledge is shared over meals at surprising locations. from the small wildernesses of remnant dry rainforests to wool-sheds. However, it is not all eating and drinking fabulous fare r. First, work up an appetite. Walk across native grass fields to stunning crater lakes. Climb a forested cinder cone to count how many other sleeping volcanoes can be seen in any direction. Promenade the European gardens of the local palaces built by squatters off the sheep’s back.
82 | Hepburn
Hepburn | 83
There are discussions with winemakers throughout the journey about adapting European and New World viticulture methods to the Basalt Plains. This may be comprehensively tested in tasting and food matching by any hungry adventurer. Remarkably, there are pictures of most of these places from the 1850s, painted by Eugen von Guerard, who travelled through the district as an illustrator for scientific expeditions. His detail and delight in the landscape is telling. Placing yourself at the viewpoint of these paintings and sketches allows you to see how the bones of the landscape remain constant, while the skin has been shifted. They are remarkable images, the first accurate European visual record and the last view of ancient cultivation. In 2019, UNESCO granted World Heritage status to the Budj Bim Lake Condah region. It’s one of the oldest (if not the oldest) aquaculture centres in the world. The eel traps created from local vegetation allow a steady supply of eel for smoking. Depending on the season and weather, this landscape is explored with the expert guidance of its generational custodians. Koroitj Tower Hill has a microclimate that defines the cuisine within and surrounding its crater. Local variations of traditional recipes, indigenous, Asian and European are explored in the meal that follows the walk around this nested maar wildlife reserve. The Sisters are an extraordinary landscape of interlocking craters of vast size on the way to Lake Kurrumbeit. There is a remarkable sense of enfolding and enclosure as you pass through them to the pale blue waters of the volcanic lake.
84 | Hepburn
The Cloven Hills, Derrinallum, Mt Elephant, and Camperdown are all landmarks that change their mood depending on the time of day and angle of approach. The galvanised iron and bluestone that dot these spaces only look important close to hand. They disappear against the contours of sleeping lava. They do represent important moments in the last two hundred years; and are a record of how industrialised agriculture has engaged with the rich soil flowing across this region. Each day begins with a deluxe glamp breakfast at a new hearth. There will be approximately three hours walking per day and no more than three hours of driving time. Guests are driven in luxury cars to their residing spot, large glamping tents. All luggage is ported and a full service is provided throughout the journey. There is an opportunity early in 2021 to participate in the last scoping tour, before the itinerary is completely locked in for the autumn season. Please get in contact with Neil Churches from The Crow’s Flight to discuss your interest on +61 425 753 988 or neil@thecrowsflight.com

Summer Starts with
S
Summer starts with S, is no sensational surprise. But that so many sensational summer sports start with S is surprising. To delight you, we thought we would dive in and tempt you with our pick of seven liquid leisure pursuits.
Hepburn | 91
Swimming Whether you are building up laps in the pool, preparing for a marathon, challenging yourself with coasteering or simply having some fun at the beach, swimming is a great for a full body workout, general wellbeing and increased energy levels. Better yet, it is exercise without sweat! For the really adventurous ones, you might like to swim with the Whale Sharks at Ningaloo. Or perhaps you enjoy the challenge of open water swimming, where you can enjoy the sun and the surf with no lane hire fees. For seasoned swimmers, ‘Swim the Gold Coast’ is a 21.5km open water swimming competition that will test your endurance. So head down to your local pool, or the beach. Remember to slip, slop slap and drink plenty of water.
92 | Hepburn
Snorkelling Snorkelling is a step into the mysterious, underwater world, observing marine life in the calm, shallow waters without complicated equipment and training. All you will need is a diving mask, a snorkel, and some swimming fins. It is a relaxing and pleasant experience that even non-swimmers can enjoy. Snorkellers can generally be found in the warm, calm waters near tropical resorts and shallow reefs where they are treated to tropical fish, vibrantly coloured corals, massive rock formations, and historic shipwrecks. Australia boasts some fabulous spots for snorkelling, including: Flinders Pier on the Mornington Peninsula, Stony Point on the Eyre Peninsula, Rottnest Island in Western Australia, Julian Rocks at Byron Bay, and Michaelmans Cay off the coast from Cairns.
Hepburn | 93
Scuba Diving Snorkelling is limited by how long you can hold your breath and might be great for a glimpse. But Scuba diving allows you to freely explore and escape to the underwater world. Scuba is actually an acronym for the Self-contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. Not sure that Scuba is for you? It is a serious leisure! It is an extreme way to challenge yourself to let go and face your fears and enjoy a new adventure. It is a new adventure every time. You could return to the same spot yet enjoy a different experience. Every dive will be different, you will discover new spots and see different marine life. Australia’s coast line offers you plenty of choice. You could be diving the Great Barrier Reef, Ningaloo Reef, Christmas Island, Lord Howe Island or Port Phillip Bay. With 70% of the world covered by water, why limit yourself to the land.
94 | Hepburn
Surfing Surfing like Gigdet on a longboard might be a dream out of vogue, but with Australia’s golden beaches surfing is here to stay. Not only is surfing good fun, it provides many health benefits including: cardiovascular fitness, shoulder, back, leg and core strength. If you don’t know how to ride a board, there are plenty of adult classes to be found like Merrick’s Noosa Learn to Surf where you learn to surf with, 2 x pro Merrick Davis. Surf Schools like “Go Ride A Wave’’ offer classes at Queensland’s Gold and Sunshine Coasts, and at several beaches along the Victorian coastline.
Hepburn | 95
Sailboarding Faster than a surfboard, more responsive than a boat, a sailboard will let you feel the wind in your hair, the strength of the wind in your sail, and the water on your feet. Sailboarding is the original name for what we now call windsurfing. Newman Darby invented the sailboard in 1964, “sailboarding is sailing with a difference: you get all the fun of handling a fast, responsive boat, and have the fun of spills without the work of righting and bailing out.” Sailboarding is a recreational sport, popular at flat water destinations, such as Golden Beach (Qld), Sandy Point (Vic), Geraldton (WA) and Gerroa (NSW). The Battle on the Bay, national sailbord championship, is being held this Easter at Parkdale Beach. If you’re not competing, and around Parkdale this Easter, you’ll be treated with a flotilla of around 120 brilliantly coloured sails ducking and weaving all vying for first place.
96 | Hepburn
Sailing Considered a luxurious pastime, sailing offers so many different experiences, from sailing for pleasure to passage-making or competing. If sailing for pleasure, you might enjoy a short trip across the bay, a coastal cruise or even a day out on a tall-ship. You will need to know the ropes, understand the tacks and become skilled at some fairly specific knots. If you fantasize about sailing in exotic locations or experiencing the tranquil waters of the Whitsundays, you can hire a yacht with a skipper and crew or learn to sail yourself. You won’t need a licence to sail in the Whitsundays, but we recommend that you check with the Royal Yacht Club in each State to confirm if you need a licence. Sailing with friends and family, or on a romantic getaway might just be the leisurely escape you need.
Hepburn | 97
Spearfishing Gruesome to some, the ultimate in game hunting to others, spearfishing is not for meek. If you are into superb seafood and healthy outdoor exercise, spearfishing might interest you. As a beginner, you will learn to free-dive and equalise. Freediving is the art of holding your breath underwater, much like the pearl divers of yesteryear! Equalising involves regulating the pressure in your middle ear. It will take practice, and remember the fish are at home in the sea, they generally swim close to the seabed, so you will need to learn to hold your breath. Spearfishing requires your strength and stamina. If you want to learn more about spearfishing, your best starting point is to contact the Australian Underwater Federation. The AUF advocates spearfishing as being “safe, sustainable, selective seafood.” Always dive with a buddy!
