Letter from the Editor Spring, I love this time of year! With the new

growth on the trees, the air freshening up, bulbs bursting through the ground, the snow melting.

Longer days, and the flowers all colouring the landscape.

I always feel revitalised emerging from those cold wintery days. Spring gives me a sense of new energy and drive. It becomes a time for planning, preparing for the year ahead, revisiting my vision and mission, and preparing the strategies to bring all to fruition.

We will be celebrating soon! It is almost one year since we launched and published the Premiere Edition of Hepburn. And I am so proud of the team and what we have achieved, what we have learnt, and where we are heading. We have revitalised our magazine and encourage you to share your thoughts on our new look inside.

So as we hit our one year mark, and step into Spring, I welcome you to read the Vitality Issue of Hepburn.

In this issue, influenced by the growth and vitality of Spring, we explore the Trends for the Spring Racing Carnival, Conquering the Glass Cliff, How Quiet is a Power Strength, Six Ways to Earn Money From Your Home, and 2022 Start with a Strategy. We introduce our new Business Book Review section featuring Quietly Powerful by Megumi Miki. We also invite you to Dive into WA’s Coral Coast and inspire you to don your boots for some horse riding with our Horses for Courses article.

We also feature women who have inspire us in many ways and hope they will inspire you too!

In this issue we feature Katalin Karikó, Özlem Türeci, Anika Chebrolu and Ramida Juenapaisal as our Influential Women in Leadership.

These woman are helping save the world from COVID-19.

Given it is the start of the Spring Racing Carnival, it would be remiss not to include some horsey women. So we feature in our Inspiring International Women is Anne, Princess Royal, Michelle Payne, as our Amazing Australian Women, and our Gone but Not Forgotten women is Elizabeth Taylor. Each of these women are amazing in their own right and our stories provide a small glimpse into their triumphs, their courage, and their philanthrophic side. We will be sharing these stories on our YouTube and podcast channels shortly.

Like any journey, Hepburn is not a solo adventure. It is only achieved through the efforts of an amazing team and our contributors. I personally wish to thank each member for their contribution to make each issue better than the last. I

t is over a year since the World Health Organisation declared the COVID-19 a pandemic and every corner of the world has felt the devastating impact of the pandemic. It is with overwhelming gratitude that we recognise some of the innovators, women and girls who raced to save humanity. Through sheer persistence, determination, and fortitude they have pioneered treatments and created vaccines that will save us from the coronavirus. They are women who will be remembered in history and some may even be awarded with the highest of accolades, the Nobel Prize.

Özlem Türeci

A decade of failed research grant applications, a demotion from Research Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and a personal battle with cancer, did not deter Katalin Karikó.

We owe a great deal of gratitude to this woman for her tenacity, persistence, fortitude, steely determination, and her strong belief to continue research into mRNA when others doubted.

Karikó stayed on at the university and in 1997 met colleague Drew Weissman, Professor of Immunology. Together, Karikó and Weissman continued the research into mRNA for a further 23 years.

German born Özlem Türeci is a billionaire physician, scientist, entrepreneur leading the pathway in the fight against COVID-19.

Türeci, her husband Uğur Şahin, and Christoph Huber founded the German-based biotechnology company BioNTech, at which Türeci is the Chief Medical Officer and is primarily responsible for clinical research and development.

Katalin Karikó and her former colleague Drew Weissman developed the synthetic mRNA method that is now the basis of the Covid-19 vaccine. Their joint patent facilitated the pathway for the BioNTech/ Pfizer and Moderna/NIH COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. Karikó and Weissman are seen as contenders for a Nobel Prize.

Karikó’s is not only a leader in her field but she is also an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania and Senior Vice President at BioNTech RNA Pharmaceuticals. This small German company that helped continue the research into mRNA facilitated the pathway for both the Pfizer and the comirnaty vaccinations.

As CMO she oversaw the research and development of messenger RNA applications which the company had been developing as a patient specific treatment for cancer. Türeci’s focus is the use of the body’s own immune system to fight disease.

However, in early 2020 the company directors realised the possibility of the global pandemic and turned their attention to and facilitated the commercialisation of the first mRNA based vaccine approved to fight against COVID-19.

Türeci was responsible for the clinical trials in the development of the Comirnaty vaccine.

The company has been researching the application of mRNA for almost two decades and remarkably helped develop the covid vaccine within a year. She has filed more than 80 international patent applications and published more than 110 articles in peerreviewed scientific journals.

Türeci a leader in the global health sector together with the BioNTech directors plan to continue the company’s original purpose of creating an mRNA-based cancer vaccine.

There are many other wonder women across the globe who have contributed their knowledge to the help fight against this disease. Young women such as Anika Chebrolu and Ramida Juenapaisal.

Anika Chebrolu, a young aspiring American scientist at the age of 14 and with the help of a mentor identified a lead molecule that can selectively bind to the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and potentially inhibit the novel corona virus. Digital product designer and front-end developer, Ramida Juengpaisal, at just 24, created a national COVID-19 tracker to stop the spread of misinformation by pulling together all available information about the virus.

And last but not at all least we thank the frontline staff, the doctors, nurses and technicians who fight this disease at the frontline, who give the vaccines, test for the disease and treat those who have caught the coronavirus.

Conquering the Glass Cliff We see women rising to positions of power and leadership, taking charge, taking responsibility. But have these women really pushed through the glass ceiling or are they heading towards the glass cliff?

Y

ou will not doubt be familiar with the Glass Ceiling effect, that informal barrier that prevents women from rising to the top in their career path. But have you head of the Glass Cliff?

The glass cliff is a phrase coined by UK professors Michelle K. Ryan and Alexander Hasslam. In 2005 Ryan and Hasslam of the University of Exeter, presented their research challenging the notion that that female leaders have a negative impact on company performance. Their research found the glass cliff, the phenomenon that women are more likely to be promoted into leadership positions that are risky and precarious, during times of crises or in downturns. This might be when a company’s share price is weak, or the company is facing a scandal, or the position involves personal reputational risk.

The Glass Cliff phenomenon is supported by subsequent research by Alison Cook and Christy Glass at Utah State University supports the glass cliff.

Cook and Glass found this phenomenon may occur during turbulent time because qualified male candidates are more risk adverse, women may

seize the opportunity as their one and only chance, and because there is a perception that women can negotiate tough times better than their male counterparts.

We don’t have to look far afield for prime examples. Consider Julia Gilliard former Prime Minister of Australia, Theresa May became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom shortly after a referendum result to leave the EU caused the pound to drop in value, Sophie Wilmès became first female prime minister of Belgium, during the coronavirus crisis, and recently appointed Alexis George CEO of the troubled Australian financial services company AMP Limited.

It isn’t all doom and gloom. There are women succeeding. Elizabeth Gaines, Chief Executive Officer of Fortesque Metals Group rose to the position in 2017 and the company has recently announced continued and expects continued growth in a time when international relationships with China its primary market are tense.

Prepare and Conquer the Glass Cliff 1. Knowledge Knowledge is power. Stay up to date with what is happening in the business and in the industry. Understand industry trends, seasonality, business cycles and economic or external factors events that may interfere with business performance.

2. Gender Biases Women actually do have better facial recognition, social cognition, emotional intelligence and empathy than men. Use these gender biases to your advantage to observe what is happening around you.

Build your network

If you are procrastinating or over-preparing for a task, think of a way to change how you approach it. It might be that you ask a colleague for assistance, or chunk it down.

Break the task down to smaller achievable tasks.

Surround yourself with people you can trust. Build your network with people in your team, your colleagues, your managers, peers outside the organisation, and mentors. Add professionals from other industries and lines of work to your network, you will be surprised what you can learn from people in other industries and professions.

3. Negotiate

Don’t be afraid to walk away

Define your expectations for the role, and understand the KPI’s, the rewards, and the benefits before you sign the contract. If you don’t know how to negotiate now is the time to lessons, find a mentor and give yourself the best outcome.

Take time to realistically assess the position.

If they likelihood of failure and reputational risk is to great, admit it. There is less likelihood of finding a similar position if you are dismissed, but if you walk away then your reputation remains intact. In the end trust yourself. You’ve got this.

Quiet is a Power Strength

We

often believe that being heard is being seen. But what if you are a quiet person? How does being quiet impact you and your career? An often overlooked ability of the quiet person is their ability to really listen and hear. Not only that by being able to really listen, you can learn a lot about what is happening around you, what problems exist, and perhaps you may even understand why those problems exist. This power is your strength.

1. Courage

Be courageous. Quiet doesn’t need to mean shy. Speak up when needed and speak with authority and influence.

2. Create

Curiosity and creativity are the life force of innovation and traits required for leadership and to inspire and lead those around you.

3. Engage

Engage your emotional intelligence, empathy and communication prowess so that others see you as a loyal team player.

4. Space

Take time to recharge your mind. Make time in your day for self-reflection so you can focus on the longer term.

5. Positive

Stand tall and feel the confidence flow within from head to toe. You know the questions and you know at least some of the answers.

Don’t worry if you are not a quiet person. This is a skill that you can learn.

Your Money, Your Wealth, Your Estate Jacqueline Hodges

Six ways to earn income from your home If you are a property owner, you can be almost guaranteed that your personal wealth has grown over the last twelve months. Property prices are trending upwards and economists say that this trend will continue at least for the shortterm. With property prices soaring you might be wondering how you can tap into this wealth. You might wonder If now the right time to sell your property and make the sea change you have dreamed of or to simplydownsize. You might have considered other ways to make money from your property. Short-term accommodation and permanent rentals can yield a nice little profit.

So, in this article I will look at some of the various ways you can make money from residential property. We will look at Australia’s biggest tax advantage - sale of the family home, just what is downsizing and how it works, negative gearing versus positive gearing and why positive is always better, permanent rental, short-term accommodation, homestay, and mirorenting.

1. Selling the Family Home

2. From Empty Nester to Downsizer

It has long been the dream of every Australian to own their own home. Just what is a home?

For some a home will be a large family house with a big backyard where the children to play, for some it will be a quiet town house with a peaceful and private courtyard, for some it will be a superb inner city unit where it is all happening, and for others it might be a tiny home and a larger block where they can enjoy an off-grid lifestyle.

When the children have grown up and finally left home and you are finally living by yourself, you may start to feel the empty nest pangs of loneliness in a big empty space.

Perhaps you are contemplating selling up and downsizing into a smaller home. If you are 65 years or more, you will be pleased to know that some of that extra cash you will have from the gain on selling you home can be used to top your retirement pool. Provided you meet the eligibility rules, you may be able to make a downsizer contribution into your superannuation of up to $300,000 from the proceeds of selling your home.

If you are thinking about selling your home and given the fantastic values at present, this might be a good option, then you might be in for a tax free gain. Special rules in the Australian tax law apply to the family home, exempting any gain on your home from tax.

However, there are conditions.

If you have always lived in your home and have never used it for income producing purposes such as renting a room, listing on Airbnb, or run a business from home, then you are in for the full windfall.

But if you have used your home to earn income in the past you may need to apportion that gain between income producing and non-income producing periods. You will need to pay tax on the portion that relates to the income producing period.

You might ask, What if I have only rented the house out for a short time, while I lived somewhere else? Well, there is another exemption, with provisos. If you leave your home to live in another place that you do not own, and you rent your family home out, as long as you return to the ome wihtin six years and do not buy a new home during that period, you will enjoy the gain you make without having to pay any tax. But this is a complex area, so check with your accountant if you do propose to sell your home!

If you are over 60 you might want tospeak with your accountant or finanical planner to stay informed about any changes to the law.

The good news is that your downsizer contribution will not: • Count towards your contribution caps • Affect your total superannuation balance • Count towards your transfer balance cap • Count towards your non-concessional caps Downsizing is a once only opportunity!

A downsizer contribution can only be used once, but if you have a partner you both may be able to make a downsizer contribution provided you both meet the eligibility criteria.

This mean a married couple may be able to contribute an extra $600,000 into their superannuation fund.

3. Permanent Rental If selling your home is not part of your plan, renting may be an attractive option. Renting your home or a room allows you to retain your asset, while reducing the repayment burden. You might choose to rent the whole house or a part of the house, and become a landlord.

If you rent the whole house you will need to consider whether you take advantage of the low interest rates and build your asset base buy buying a new home, or renting in the area of your choice. Many people choose to buy a house where they can afford and use the rental income to offset the cost of renting in a better suburb or somewhere closer to their work.

The rental income less the costs associated with renting will form part of your taxable income and need to be recorded in your income tax return. If you make a profit on the rent, you will increase your income and may have additional tax to pay. With the current low interest many more landlords are realising a profit this year. Conversely, if you make a loss on renting you property, you will be able to reduce your taxable income and may reduce your income tax payable.

4. Running a BnB Starting a Bed and Breakfast like requires some planning particularly if you have no experience in the hospitality industry. But with a little research you can turn your spare room into an income generator.

You will need to do some marketing to attract guests, however with the many listing sites such as AirBnB or booking. com you won’t have the stress of managing a website.

As a host, you can engage with your guests and create a social experience to entertain your guests. Or if you have the right space, such as a downstairs apartment or a granny flat you can leave your guests manage their own space and time.

Like permanent rentals, you will need to include your rental income and expenses in your tax return. If you are starting out or simply offering the space on an ad hoc basis you will still need to include the net rental income or loss in your income tax return.

5. International Student Homestay If you have a spare room and would like to try a cultural exchange experience, hosting an international student may be a good way to bolster your income. As the host you provide the student with more than a room and a meal, you are providing a safe and supportive home environment for an agreed time frame at a specific rate. You may need to provide meals, assistance and other activities.

If you really engage with the student, you may find you have a friend for life and a place to stay if you ever travel to their home country. A familiar face is always nice when travelling abroad. Hosting an international student is generally treated as board and not taxable. However, this will depend on your specific circumstance.

6. Film Set This is not for everyone! You have to accept there will be lights, cameras, and action!

Renting your home out for a photoshoot or as a film location is form of short-term rental and in the case of a photoshoot a micro-rental. A photoshoot may only last one hour.

If your home has unique characteristics, it is likely to capture the attention of a location specialist. Perhaps it is a heritage home, or Art Deco apartment, or the interior is carefully and skilfully curated to convey a sense of glamour, or perhaps you have an old rundown ramshackle barn on a farm.

Filmmakers, advertisers and photographers are always looking for great locations and your home could be one what they require.

While it may not mean a regular source of income or the chance that the next major movie filmed will feature your home, registering your home as a location can be a great way to earn the occasional extra income.

Preparing your business for sale It’s exciting, challenging and time consuming to buy a business and run it yourself.

Beyond immersing yourself, in the starting and running of your business it’s just as important to plan for the future. Your exit from the business in the future, and preparing your business for sale is an important section of your ongoing business plan and strategy.

Planning and taking the time to prepare for this future event is not only wise, but will provide the best chance for you to realise the best return and sales price for your going concern, no matter when that may be.

We never know what the future may bring, but we can prepare and consider our options beforehand providing a framework and safety net to protect our interests in the future and best position your business for life’s eventualities.

So many business owners may rush into a sale and do not take the time to position themselves for best results, which at a minimum is 12 months beforehand. Being so involved in the business, dealing with the daily running, challenges, obstacles it’s like being too close to the trees to see the forest.

No one wants to be in a position in the future when a fire sale is required or the selling price for your business is not the strongest it could be.

For those that start a business and enjoy the adventure at some time in the future there comes a time when it needs to be sold.

So, look at all the requirements needed to sell your business in the future and research all the angles to best position the business for a strong result.

Section 52 Disclosure Statement A Section 52 which is a disclosure statement that the owner of a small business must provide to a prospective purchaser, and this statement follows the legal requirements set out in Section 52 of the Estate Agents Act 1980 for Victoria. Check your own State in Australia to confirm the local requirements and reach out to a professional and expert for assistance.

This statement is required for the sale of a small business in Victoria at a price of up to $450,000. It is usually completed by the seller and their accountant using the form prescribed under the Estate Agents (General, Accounts and Audit) Regulations 2018.

The statement is part of the buyer’s due diligence and sets out the financial performance of the business over the last two years.

The statement must also provide the financial performance for the current financial year up to the most recent quarter. Beware: If you don’t provide the statement to the buyer, the contract can be voided.

When to Start Many people have a love hate relationship with Tax and the ATO, but when selling your business telling a buyer you make extra income through cash is not something they can generally verify. Think about the advice would you offer them with respect to scalability, your customers, suppliers list and how the business has been run.

he quieter member of the Windsor family, second child and only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, Anne Princess Royal may have received less public press exposure than other members of the family but that was until we all fell in love with her or at least the portrayal of her in season three and four of The Crown. She is unique, quirky, independent, headstrong, passionate, and a Knight of the Garter.

Following in her mother’s footsteps, Anne has a love of animals and is an accomplished equestrian in her own right. Breaking with the establishment, she was the first royal to attend the Olympics. She represented England at the 1976 Montreal Olympics Riding allowed Anne to make a name for herself, independent of her royal status.

Due to succession rules of the day Anne although second child was not immediately in line to the throne. She is currently sixteenth in line behind her younger brothers Andrew and Edward. Thankfully these outdated rules have now changed but will not see Anne’s position change. Perhaps she is quite happy with that!

In 1986 she was appointed president of the Fédération Équestre Internationale, the international governing body of equestrian sports, a position she held for eight years. then in 1971 she won the European Eventing Championships becoming the first British Royal Family member to win a European title. However, it is in 2016 that Anne was awarded the Longines Ladies Award for her lifelong achievement at the highest level of equestrian sport.

Anne is one of the busiest royals, as patron to over 300 charities, organisations and military regiments in the UK and overseas.

Now 70 years of age she devotes much of her working life to official engagements and visits. She has officially represented the monarchy since she was 18 years of age. Her work is varied across areas which include children, poverty, logistics, women, health, carers, education, sport, animal welfare, and the British Army.

In another break with tradition Anne choose to marry a commoner Captain Mark Phillips in a televised ceremony watched by over 500 million people across the globe. Phillips refused a title and consequently their children Peter Phillips and Zara Phillips do not have titles. Anne was the first Royal to divorce since 1905. It was a public divorce, but she found love again with Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence. Anne, Princess Royal and Sir Timothy Laurence have been married for almost 30 years.

From a young girl who grew up in a family of privilege and honour Anne has proven herself an independent thinker, and an inspirational woman. Anne may not be a fairytale princess but her home Gatcombe Park is magical. She is impressive.

She is remarkable. She is real.

A business strategy is the master plan that will assist you in achieving your business objectives. It encompasses the business’ aspirations, goals, playing field, resources, and capabilities.

What What are your aspirations?

What is the vision and mission of the business?

When What are the goals for the business?

What are milestones that can measure

Who

your success?

Where do you want to play?

Who is your target market?

Why

What is the value proposition for your customer?

Why will they buy from you?

How

Do you have the capability to deliver?

What do you need to make it happen?

You may find you have several target customers and therefore a separate strategy for each. Afterall, your approach, language and resources will be different if you are targeting an individual, a small retail chain or a big corporate. You will need separate strategies for each target market.

To help you define your business strategy start with your vision and mission statements then ask the following the three questions.

1. Who is your target customer?

2. What is the value proposition to that customer?

3. What are the essential capabilities needed to deliver that value proposition?

Then go back to your vision and mission statements and consider does that target market align to your aspirations. You may need to look at you values and beliefs and consider if this is a market that you really want to play in.

What strategies does your business need Developing your business strategy takes time and thought. But it is not just one strategy. You need several strategies to cover the key areas of your business. Whether you are a sole trader or a large business all key areas of your business need attention for your business to succeed and grow.

Sales are the life force of any business and having the right sales person for the job is crucial. Consider your sales channels and determine whether you require a transactional sales person, a trusted advisers or a strategic partner.

Your strategy might be to develop a sales funnel to convert prospects into sales.

Establish a good relationship with the bank. You never know when you may need funding and you will need to have the relationship established. Banks are not likely to lend to you in an emergency of you don’t have the established rapport.

Your strategy might be to meet regularly with the business banker.

Marketing is the essential connection between the business and the world.

Your branding provides an emotional connection between the world and your products and/or services. Consider what image you want to portray and how your customers will perceive that image. Your strategy might be to nurture customer relationships for future sales.

Build the relationships with your customers to ensure they are engaged and focused on buying form your business. Happy customers provide referrals to grow your business. You strategy might be to identify your customer and where to find them.

When necessary train your employees up to improve the capabilities of the business. Your strategy might be to outsource to contractors.

You might consider footprint and location and whether this supplier can supply when needed. Your strategy might be to review suppliers six-monthly.

8. Operations You have got to understand the numbers, and the timing of the cash flows. When does the money come in and when does it go out. Establish operational policies, procedure and processes to ensure consistency across the business. Your strategy might be to learn some accounting fundamentals.

9. Innovation Continuous improvement to stay ahead and relevant. When developing your product or service consider how it can be improved in the future and whether it should be scrapped after a certain time. Its no use making parts for X if X no longer exists. Your strategy might be to hold a weekly meeting address continuous improvement.

10. Technology We are all in the cloud today and it is convenient. Focus on using current technology and analyse what’s in the market. The software you use today make not be the best option as the business grows. Develop and understand cybersecurity relevant to your business. Your strategy might be to conduct a six0monthly review on software requirements.

Off course these are broad concepts to get you started. You can drill down on each area to develop strategies that specifically align to your business. Following are some sales strategy examples that may be used to help start the thought processes.

“Everybody gets caught up in everything, but at the end of the day we’re all just here for a short time, so we may as well enjoy it.”

Youthfulness denies a woman the wealth of knowledge and expertise that can only come from years of experience. Yet some possess the passion, courage and determination that leads them to become the first to succeed in their field. And it is these qualities that make Michelle Payne an amazing woman. It is hard to believe that six years have passed since Michelle led the field to become the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup. It didn’t happen be chance.

It took a career in the saddle, years of training, a strict dietary regime, early mornings, sweat boxes, grit, a will to win, and a family’s love of horse racing.

“Racing is my passion and I’ve been able to have a good life anyway.

I’ve been able to travel the world, so I’m not complaining.”

It was enthralling and incredible to watch the 2015 Melbourne Cup. Hailed as the race that stops the nation, the 2015 cup it was an unbelievable race. With my amateurish racing aptitude, it didn’t look promising. Michelle on Pirates of Penzance held back until the last moment before letting the horse gallop ahead and surge past the favourites to go onto to win the race. And it wasn’t by a nose or by a head.

It was by a whole length. This young woman sporting the colours of the suffragettes showed the racing fraternity that the Melbourne Cup could be won by a female jockey.

“I do believe my mum looks after me, and I feel so much faith thinking that she is riding with me and is with me in everyday life, whenever I need her.”

Michelle, the youngest of 10 children was only six-months old when her mother was tragically killed in a car accident leaving Paddy, Michelle’s father, to raise his brood. Paddy Payne originally from New Zealand had an established career as a jockey and trainer before moving to Australia.

His knowledge has clearly pathed the way for this family.

Eight siblings have continued in racing as jockey’s and trainers. While her brother Stevie who has Down Syndrome, was her strapper at the 2015 Melbourne Cup.

“I always grew up thinking how amazing my dad was, how strong he was.”

She may have said a prayer to her Mum before the race and Stevie may have claimed selecting the barrier but Michelle made it happen.

As you would expect, the Melbourne Cup was not Michelle’s first win and certainly not the first time at a Group One meet. She has ridden over 700 winners, including the Tattersall’s Tiara (2011) and The Thousand Guineas (2010). And it hasn’t been without difficulty and upset.

Michelle has suffered a fractured skull, broken ribs. Shortly after winning the Melbourne Cup, Michelle suffered a serious fall that resulted in pancreatic surgery and a long recovery. But passion holds strong and she continues to ride and train horses at her Nottingham Farm, near Ballarat.

Michelle’s shares her life story and the story behind her historic win in her memoir, Life As I know It, written with John Harms, Such an inspirational story was quickly made for the big screen with Rachel Griffiths as Director. What’s IN Spring racing carnival is on and whether you are a punter or not, its exciting to watch the horses race and enjoy the fresh raw smell of a country meet. Its close, its personal, you can speak to the jockeys, you can stand close to the barriers or the finish and hear the horses pounding the earth aS they gallop past.

There are plenty of country races that are part of the carnival and it’s a great day out for a picnic at the races. Invite your family or your friends, get a small marquee and table and chairs, some champagne and chicken sandwiches and your set for a day of Spring racing fun.

What’s OUT It’s the race that stops the nation.

Melburnians enjoy a public holiday and many head off to the track, to the members stand, the Birdcage, or the public area on that first Tuesday in November. Across the nation many host sumptuous lunches and soirees, and banks and other institutions make sure a television is available for the race. There is nothing else like it and nothing else that takes hold of the nation in this way.

And the jockeys, and the owners, and the stewards, and the punters all dream of winning this race. And the bookies and the TAB will fear the chances of an outsider to win.

But in the face of Melbourne lockdowns for the first time in history, 2020 saw a Melbourne Cup like no other. Flemington had no spectators. It was a race day like no other and this year the Flemington race will face the same COVID restrictions.

It will be a different feel, without the crowds cheering in a thunderous roar as the horses gallop towards the finish line.

But we as a nation will still stop to watch this marvellous race. A race that has us all intrigued whether we are punter or not, we will join in across the nation and cheer from our seats as our horse races past the post.

With Spring Racing Carnival upon us, it is time to put on your cocktail frock, don your fascinator, and shine. Race days are meant to be fun, a time you can share with friends, and cheer on your favourite horses. They are also an occasion when you can dress up and wear something that you wouldn’t wear everyday. But strict dress codes apply to some races. So here’s our tips for what to wear this year.

If you were looking to go to Melbourne Cup, Racing Victoria have announced that the same strict COVID-safe protocols that were in place in 2020 will apply this year too! That means no general public, and no spectators. Only industry particpants will be allowed but you can still enjoy the race from home.

And if restrictions apply have a zoom party in the lounge. You can watch the races, and chat at the same time. It may not be quite the same but you can still make this a fun event.

Nothing over the top. Some country meets are quite laid back, so country casual may be acceptable. You may also find there is an expectation of wearing a hat.

Here are a few more tips if you’re going to the races...

If you are in the public area arrange a group and arrive early so you can find a good spot.

Take a picnic blanket, plenty of finger food and fruit to share. Wear pumps rather than stilettos, if you’re standing on the lawn your heels will simply sink in and you may trip or ruin your shoes.

If you intend to stand all day, wear shoes that are a size larger than usual. Your feet will swell during the day and a larger fitting will ensure you are comfortable all day. Wear a hat rather than a fascinator. It may be hard to find a shady spot and if you’re in the sun all day you’ll escape a nasty sun stroke. Pack a rain poncho, just in case.

Check the rules at each race track as different rules may apply. You may find you need to be vaccinated to enter. Also you may not be able to bring food or drinks in, so be prepared to buy water.

And don’t forget some bubbles. You’ll want to celebrate that little win!

Effective communication is not just about getting the message out, it is about knowing when to deliver the message, and when to keep quiet. Knowing when and why to keep quiet will not only help the business find new opportunities and harness existing opportunities but it will also help with your own personal and professional development.

To be a good communicator take practice and there are a few key skills you need to develop to help you build successful business relationships.

Listen and Learn Meetings are a great place for learning, not only about the business but about other people. When you actively participate in a meeting you are sharing information about yourself, your personality, your knowledge, your beliefs, Instead of being the active participant, try being an observer. Watch what others do and say. Watch the quiet people. Listen for what is not being said.

Generally the smartest person in the room is the one saying nothing. Listening is an art and it takes time and requires practice. But try to listen more, because when you listen you learn.

Negotiating the Sale Silence is a powerful negotiation tactic. But more than that if during the negotiations you ask open-ended questions, you give yourself permission to remain silent and allow the other person to speak. The other person may also need a moment of silence to gather their thoughts and formulate their response.

These silent moments at the negotiation table provide you with time to think about your response, consider objections, consider alternatives, and propose solutions.

Importantly, these moments of silence allow you to reign in your ego. You will also learn whether you wish to continue the negotiations with this person, and whether you want to form and build a relationship with this person.

Negotionation is a skill that can be developed over time. However, if you don’t feel confident in this area, or don’t have the time spare to devleop thise skills. find a mediator, a lawyer, or a consultant who can negotiate on your behalf.

Confidential Information Confidential information is any type of information that you regard as confidential. It forms part of the business’s intellectual property and form part of the business’s good will. Confidential information includes trade secrets and know-how. It also includes business information such as financial records, business plans, marketing plans, customer lists, supplier lists, operational plans, and technical information.

Confidential information provides your business with a competitive advantage that you may not want to share with your competitor. However you may want to share this information in a specific business arrangement or you may have to share some information with employees and contractors.

To protect this information, you will need a lawyer to draft confidentiality agreements and clauses in your employment contacts.

An Oregon orchardist in 1978, developed the Red Angel Pear which ripens more easily and stays fresher than a green pear. The variety has maintained its status as a ‘trade secret’ throughout the decades.

Recently, Goulburn Valley orchardist Mr Kalafatis and fellow orchardist Mr Rullo have acquired the exclusive right to grow and sell the Red Angel in Australia. Permission to grow the pear was negotiated through the Australian Nurserymen’s Fruit Improvement Company and the Associated International Group of Nurseries.

If your trade secrets, know-how, or confidential information are misappropriated, you can commence legal proceedings against the person that misappropriated them.

When not be silent There will be times that silent isn’t your greatest weapon!

If you are being asked for your personal opinion in a meeting, give it. You can be succinct, without being abrupt. But by keeping quiet, you may diminish your professional standing.

If you are counselling an employee, you need to provide reasons as t why the counselling is needed. Keeping quiet and raising your eyebrow in disapproval will not help this situation. You need to provide guidance to the employee and show them how they can improve.

Exploring Kapa Haka Aotearoa land of the long white cloud, (New Zealand) is home of Kapa Haka. The Kapa (line) Haka (dance) is the performance arts of traditional dance forms, songs, chants and weaponary of the Maori. A spiritual people, Kapa Haka evokes an emotional performance held during special events and festivals and on Marae (Maori meeting grounds). The haka is a founded in cultural legend and is more than the haka played out on international rugby tours. It goes to the heart and soul of the Maori people.

Maori traditional dance has three main forms, including the Waiata-ā-ringa, Poi, and the Haka. Waiata-ā-ringa action songs are social renditions done by male and female performers using hand movements to symbolise and convey meaning and tell a story. Stories, history and legends were traditionally passed from generation to generation via the songs and chants of the Haka. Poi dancing is usually performed by women who swirl one or more Poi balls on a string. Poi is intended to convey charm, grace, and beauty.

Meant to intimidate, the well-known challenge Haka, is a loud war dance involving chants, hand movements, Waewae takahia foot-stomping, thigh slapping, and Whetero the poking out of the tongue. Performers may use weapons to demonstrate their ferocity, such as a Taiaha spears, and Patu clubs.

Today the Haka may be performed by men and women, however there is debate as whether the Haka was traditionally a male only dance.

The familiar Ka mate of the Te Rauparaha Haka performed by the All Blacks is a ceremonial haka.

Manawa wera haka is also a ceremonial dance performed at funerals or memorials.

There are some Maori legends about the origins of the Haka. One legend suggests that the shimmering air on a hot day represents the dancing performed by Tane-rore the son of Tamanui-te-ra the sun god and his wife Hine-raumati who embodies the essence of summer. Another legend suggest women were the first to perform the Haka. In this legend the women were sent by their ancestor Tinirau to find the person who killed his pet whale. The women developed the dance and facial expressions to expose the culprit.

Pukana facial expression is important to the Maori dancing. While this may seem aggressive and intimidating, it is meant to convey an exaggerated expression of the emotional meaning of the lyrics and transfer that meaning to the audience. Women will widen their wyes and poke out their chin, while men will widen their eyes and poke out their tongue. The haka also has spiritual meaning and provides a connection with Tupuna ancestors.

Kapa haka is offered as a subject in universities, and is practised in schools and military institutions. Anybody may learn the Haka, you will find Maori schools offering lessons in most capital cities but for an immersive experience we suggest you travel to New Zealand to take in the culture respectfully.

Ending a career of 61 years, Elizabeth retired from acting in 2001 to concentrate on her philanthropic pursuits.

She amassed one of the largest and most important private jewellery collections in the world. Husband Richard Burton gifted her three significant pieces, the 33.19 carat Krupp Diamond, the 69.42 carat Taylor-Burton Diamond, and the 50 carat La Peregrina Pearl. She also published a book My Love Affair with Jewellery, a personal anecdotal tale complemented by 275 images of her collection.

Elizabeth suffered from ill health for most of her life, suffering chronic back problems and in later life from congestive heart failure. Addicted to alcohol and prescription drugs, she became the first celebrity to openly admit her rehabilitation treatment.

During her life, Elizabeth Taylor advocated strongly for the Gay Community

and raised more than USD $270million for HIV/AIDS. She was one of the first celebrities to support this cause, which at the time was a global endemic.

For her philanthropy, she was made a Knight of the French Legion of Honour and received several other awards.

She passed away at the age of 79 in 2011. After her death in 2011, her jewellery collection was sold at auction for USD $115.9million, a world record for a private collection. The proceeds were bequeathed to The Elizabeth Taylor Foundation. Even through her own suffering, she fought for the welfare of others.

Mocktail Virgin Raspberry Mojito Ingredients 300mls

Soda water

Lime juice

250mls Water 250gms Raspberries 300gms Sugar 125gm

Fresh mint leaves

Extra raspberries and mint for garnish

Equipment Old-fashioned rocks glasses for serving Cocktail shaker

Directions 1. Crush mint leaves using a mortar and pestle.

Over a medium heat boil crushed mint leaves, 250gm sugar and water for around 3 minutes, stirring to dissolve sugar.

2. Let cool to room temperature, then strain out mint leaves, press with a wooden spoon to help release all liquid.

3. Using a wooden spoon, muddle raspberries with 100gm sugar until broken down.

4. Divide raspberries between 4 glasses and add 2 tablespoons sugar syrup and 2 tablespoons lime juice to each glass.

5. Fill glasses with ice and top with soda water.

6. Garnish with mint and whole raspberries.

Variations a. Midnight Splash: substitute raspberries with blackberries or black currents. Garnish with a wedge of lime and fresh whole blackberries.

b. Morning Dash: substitute raspberries and soda water with pomegranate and coconut water. Garnish with a wedge of lime and shaved coconut.

Directions 1. Add crushed ice into coupe glass 2. Dry shake Gin, Lemon Myrtle syrup, and lemon juice.

3. Pour Gin mix over crushed ice and drizzle with Crème de Mure.

4. Garnish with lemon zest and fresh seasonal berries.

5. Serve immediately.

Variations a. For a floral note substitute lemon myrtle syrup with Elderflower cordial and garnish with a sprig of rosemary. b. For a blast of freshness substitute lemon juice with lime juice and garnish with fresh mint.

Infuse your own Spiced Raspberry Gin Ingredients

Directions 1. Place all dry ingredients in Mason jar.

750mls Gin 1 cup

fresh raspberries

1/4cup

dried apple

1 tsp

black tea leaves

whole cloves

honey

2. Pour gin over the dry ingredients and continue to fill jar.

3. Store in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks, gently stir every few days.

4. After 2 weeks, strain liqueur through a fine sieve or double layer of dampened cheesecloth or coffee filter into a clean container. Do not remove the raspberries. Allow this to steep for a further 10 days. Add honey or sugar and stir well.

Equipment 1 litre mason jar

5. Strain final mixture through cheesecloth into a small jar and seal tightly. Store for up to one year.

Directions Arrange oysters in their half shell on a bed of ice on a large serving platter. Add toppings about half an hour before serving.

Raspberry Vinaigrette: Combine lemon juice, eshallot, raspberries, mint, vinegar and syrup. Spoon vinaigrette over the oysters.

Raspberry, Mango & Roe: Sprinkle oysters with lemon juice. Arrange raspberries, mangoes, and roe on each oyster Coconut & Lychees: Mix coconut cream, lemon juice, and xanthan gum in a bowl until smooth. Peel lychees and cut lychees flesh into four pieces and slice raspberries Spoon a little coconut mixture over each oyster and garnish with lychees and raspberries Mango Salsa: Combine mango, avocado, coriander, chilli and onion in a bowl and refrigerate until ready to use. Mix sugar, fish sauce and lime juice in a small bowl. When ready to serve mix sauce with salsa and place a small amount on each oyster.

Coming Up: European Masters Prepare to be mesmerised by the European Masterpieces from The Metropolitan Museum Of Art, New York.

About the European Masters Spanning 500 years, the exhibit offers a breathtaking journey from the 1420s and emerging Renaissance to conclude at the height of early twentieth century post-impressionism.

Dive into the Coral Coast

W

estern Australia is big, beautiful and a billion years old. At close to the size of Western Europe, and at one-third of Australia, WA offers a diverse experience, from 20,000 kilometres of coastline, you will find glorious beaches, to tropical rainforest, to scorching red desert tracks, and a host of natural wonders. It is the State of Summer somewhere, with Mediterranean conditions in the south through to wet tropics in the north. And the Coral Coast in the middle greets the Indian Ocean and you’ll be spoiled in the evening with majestic sunsets.

Western Australia’s Coral Coast boasts amazing marine life, endless white sandy beaches, and the stunningly beautiful turquoise and warm waters of the Indian Ocean. This region is home to Ningaloo Reef and Shark Bay both World Heritage listed sites.

The Indian Ocean Drive skirts the towns of Cervantes, Jurien Bay, Leeman and Dongara, where you’ll find unexpected food and drink experiences; The Lobster Shack at Cervantes celebrating one of the state’s many premium food exports, while Illegal Tender Rum Co at Dongara adds to an ever-growing number of distilleries in the state.

The Pinnacles, 17 kilometres south of Cervantes within Nambung National Park, is unforgettable and ethereal, with its thousands of limestone pillars pointing skyward. A traditional site of “women’s business” within Noongar culture, the pillars are said to be young men punished for straying into the sacred area, encased in sand and stone, their weapons pointing to the sky.

Inland regions draw wildflower hunters, both experienced and novice, in late winter and early spring. Western Australia is rich in flora with over 12,000 identified wildflower species.

Lesueur National Park, 20 kilometres from Jurien Bay, is a starting point for many. Geraldton, 420 kilometres from Perth, is a centre for cray (lobster) fishing, a rugged industry with an international reputation for quality, and one which can be experienced just offshore. Operators like Jay Cox of Eco Abrolhos run crayfish tours, guests boarding the cray boat for a few hours, pulling up pots laden with crays, with the 30-year veteran of the industry. It’s a hands-on experience that culminates on dry land, feasting on the days catch at local restaurant Skeetas (owned by Jay Cox’s brother, Colin Cox).

Snorkelling at Ningaloo Reef.

If you’re visiting Exmouth, Coral Bay or the ocean-side pastoral stations north of Carnarvon, this is an absolute must-do.

The World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef is regarded as one of the last great ocean paradises on Earth, and you can access this watery wonderland by simply stepping off the beach and swimming a few metres to one of the world’s largest fringing reef.

Swimming with gentle giants.

Join a whale shark tour from Exmouth or Coral Bay for the ultimate wildlife encounter – swimming with the world’s largest fish. Whale sharks visit Ningaloo Reef from mid-March to the end of July; or swim with humpback whales from July/ August to November. Year round you can also swim with giant manta rays while keeping an eye out for sea turtles, dugongs and game fish.

Friendly dolphins at Monkey Mia. One of the world’s most reliable places for wild dolphin encounters, Monkey Mia’s curious bottlenose dolphins have been swimming to shore to interact with humans for more than 40 years. While in the World Heritage-listed Shark Bay area, you can also spot sea turtles and dugongs, admire the world’s oldest and largest living fossils – Hamelin Pool’s stromatolites – and fish, snorkel and dive. Don’t miss a trip into Francois Peron National Park, the colours are sure to impress.

Head inland to explore some of WA’s most magnificent wildflower country, particularly between June and October when blooms are at their breath-taking best. While spotting some of WA’s 12,000 wildflower species, check out other amazing colours at Hutt Lagoon near Port Gregory, where waters could be red, bubblegum pink or lilac depending on the conditions. The lagoon, best viewed between April and October, is located between other Coral Coast highlights – the seaside city of Geraldton and its diving drawcard, the Abrolhos Islands; and Kalbarri, where soaring river gorges meet the sea.

Acres of incredible limestone spires rise eerily from the sand at the Pinnacles in Nambung National Park near the coastal town of Cervantes, a little over two hours north of Perth on the Indian Ocean Drive. Meanwhile in Kalbarri National Park, the much anticipated Kalbarri Skywalk officially opened in June 2020. Offering visitors breathtaking and uninterrupted views over Kalbarri National Park, the 100-metre high skywalk features two cantilevered viewing platforms that extend 25 and 17-metres beyond the rim of the Murchison River Gorge.

Dressage If you have you dreamed of gracefully performing a carefully choreographed pattern of movements around an arena then dressage is calling you. Dressage is an equestrian form of artistic expression. It requires lots of rigorous training, and mastery not only of the highly stylised riding but also the development of the horse’s athletic ability. The dressage event is about both the rider and the horse. Training focuses on rhythm, gait, tempo, and regularity. If dressage is for you will find training schools throughout the country. And if you think you’ve left it too late to start in this competitive sport, taken courage, Australian Mary Hanna aged 66 represented Australia at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in June this year and will compete at the 2022 World Championships in Denmark.

Show Jumping Show jumping takes precision, and tact to complete a predefined course challenge. An experienced rider and horse will perform this dynamic event with a grace and visual spectacle that will impress all. Australian show jumping is graded by height to accommodate the level of experience from maiden and novice to open class. Jumps for a maiden at set at 75cms while the open class the jumps are set to 1.4m. Internationally, show jumping events include hunter classes, jumper classes and hunt seat equitation classes. Hunters are judged subjectively and must meet an ideal standard of manners and style. Jumper classes compete on a more complex and technical course and are scored on a numerical score determined only by whether the horse attempts the obstacle sequence successfully and in the allotted time. Show jumping requires a good level of fitness and training at a specialist school.

Polo and Polocrosse Polo, the sport of Kings, is one of the world’s oldest team sports and can be traced back to the nobility of Persia from around 220 AD. It is played by two opposing teams of four. Each player uses a long-handled wooden mallet to hit a small wooden ball whilst riding. Polocrosse is essentially lacrosse on horseback. It is a team sport consisting of two teams of six players. Players use a cane with racket attached. Similar to polo the object is to hit a small ball down the field and through the goal posts. If you are not into team sports you can enjoy the game as a spectator and join in the divot stomping on the field. It is quite fun to participate in the stomping but it serves the practical necessity of repairing the ground to reduce the risk of falls and injury during play. Endurance Endurance riding is like orienteering on horseback, with horse and rider required to successfully complete a marked course over varying terrain within a set timeframe. You will need all your horse management skills to negotiate these events. While there are shorter rides for families, the common distance for an endurance is 80 kms, a penultimate one day championship of 160kms, and for a marathon 400kms spread over five days. Events are split into legs to spell the horse and allow for vet checks. If you’re a beginner taking your first training ride, you will be supported with appropriate planning to develop up to the 40 km endurance over a twelve week period. You will find endurance riding clubs throughout Australia.

Barrel Racing Looking for a bit more action? Whether you are an experienced rider or just want to spectate, barrel racing has the thrill of the rodeo showing off the horse’s athleticism, the skilful horsemanship of the rider, figureeights, three-leaf clovers, three barrels, and a whole lotta dust. This started as a women’s event in Texas, USA around 1948. You will see men competing today. The object is to run a set pattern around the three barrels in the shortest time. Barrel racing horses need to be fast, strong, agile, and intelligent. It takes wits to hug the barrels on the turn, follow commands, and manoeuvre through the course at a pace. If you want to find out what it’s about you will find barrel racing events are rodeos, gymkhanas and championships most weekends around the country. Vaulting Meet gymnastics on horseback. This ancient sport dates back to the ancient Greece and the Isle of Crete. If you want to try out your hand at a choreographed performance in a glitzy outfit to a musical composition, while balancing on horse that is cantering in a15-metre circle, then vaulting might be for you. You won’t need to worry about directing the horse as a Longeur controls the horse, so you will be free to concentrate on your balance and performance. A special girth called a vaulting surcingle is used to support the performer. This is an artistic sport that requires balance, flexibility. In fact it is a sport that is sometimes prescribed to children who have difficulties with balance. It is also a competitive sport with classes to suit the individual vaulter with one-minute events, pas-de-duex with two-minute events, and team of three vaulters with four-minute events.
