“For a very long time now I’ve been saying to young women, ‘You can have it all, but not all at the same time.’ How important it is to take very good care of yourself, of your mental and physical and spiritual wellbeing; it’s hard to do. It’s easier to be a workaholic than to have a truly balanced life.”

The Honourable Dame
Quentin Bryce
Hepburn Hepburn | | 13 13
Quentin Bryce is formally Australia’s first female Governor-General. She may have retired from office but she is a remarkable, distinguished and elegant women, who held the position from 2008 to 2014 after serving as Governor of Queensland from 2003 to 2008. Quentin was born in Brisbane on December 23, 1942, as her family’s second child. She was raised by her two parents Norman Walter Strachan and Edwina Naida Wetzel, in the rural outback town of Ilfracombe, Queensland, as her father worked on wool scour factories. All four of the Strachan children received home schooling and moved around to several rural towns in Australia during their childhoods. They moved to Launceston, Tasmania, when Quentin was just seven years old and lived there for one year before relocating back to Brisbane and settling down in the suburb of Belmont. However, her father further moved to Tenterfield, New South Wales, while the rest of the family remained in the city. When Quentin was aged nine, she attended Camp Hill State School, where she first met her future husband, Michael Bryce. He was a teenager and the brother of Quentin’s close primary school friend. Although the pair lost contact when she attended boarding school at Moreton Bay College in Wynnum, the pair did meet again at University during the early 60s. Once she graduated High School, she studied a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws at the University of Queensland and was one of only two women in her cohort at the time. She reunited with Michael Bryce, who she met at primary school during her tertiary studies as their circles of friends mixed, and the pair began to date. The two married in December of 1964, and a year later, she graduated from University in 1965. Together, the couple had two daughters and three sons.

“Keep me busy. I’m here to work. I’m here to do good things. I’m here to meet as many people as possible”
In 1965 Quentin was one of the first
women to be accepted to the Queensland bar even though she had never practised. After graduation, Quentin and her husband travelled to Europe to live in London for the next few years and she looked after their firstborn while Michael worked in an Architectural firm. When they returned to Australia in 1968, Quentin wanted to begin her career within the legal practice but was offered a position to be a tutor, becoming the first female to work in the law faculty at the University of Queensland. While teaching, Quentin also joined the National Women’s Advisory Council in 1978 and further took on the role of Convener in 1982.
The bonds that women share around the world, wherever we come from, they’re very powerful and they have an ease of communication because we share those very important things of our families, our mothering, of improving opportunities for the next generation. She retired from teaching law in 1983, and in the following years, she embarked on many leadership positions. In 1984 she became the first director of the Queensland Women’s Information Service. She then became the Queensland Director of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission and left to further to work as the Federal Sex Discrimination Commissioner from 1988 to 1993. The position was based in Sydney, and she decided to commute between Brisbane and her new place of work.

This role was challenging as 2,000 complaints were received during those years, making the work difficult to keep up with; however, Quentin successfully handled the situations under pressure. She moved into the role of Founding Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the National Childcare Accreditation Council for the next three years before working at the Women’s College within the University of Sydney. She worked as the Principal and Chief Executive Officer at the University between 1997 and 2003, which was seen as a slight career change. Quentin’s reasoning for this involved wanting to influence students’ lives.
“children have been the focus of my life, all my life. Whatever else I might be doing, children, not just my own children but all children, have been at the centre.”
Queen approved Quentin’s appointment, and she was sworn in later that year, becoming the first woman to hold the title, which was from 2008 to 2014. After she stepped down from her role as Governor-General, she was appointed the Dame of the Order of Australia. This honour recognises Australian citizens for an achievement or service.
It’s a great privilege and an honour to have the experiences and opportunities that I do to meet extraordinary Australians right across our country who share a great generosity of spirit.
In 2003, the Premier of Queensland, Peter Beattie, offered the role of Governor of Queensland to Quentin, who contentedly accepted. During her time as Governor of Queensland, she travelled to regional and remote areas spending plenty of her time serving as a Governor for all of the Queensland state and was praised as an ‘inspiring leader’. Her five-year term was set to end in July of 2008. However, the Prime Minister at the time, Kevin Rudd, announced that Quentin would be taking on the role of the Governor-General of Australia. The

Hello! It’s Me, YOUR Body here, it’s 2022. It’s Time to Listen to Me, Now.
Sally McGrath
With a new year, comes, a new you, planning, goals and expectations for success in every area of your life … right?
Hepburn | 19
Your Plan for the Year Ahead If you’ve set goals to improve areas of your life the five points below will set the framework to help you with your “life cleanse”. 1. Reset Your Body & Mind Scenario: You’re tired of looking in the mirror seeing the same reflection that is unmotivated, not smiling back at you, and lacking the inspiration to go forward with your day. Instead you sigh and think “oh well, it is what it is” and continue on (possibly berating yourself for that extra glass of wine, not getting to sleep earlier or snoozing through the alarm). Now it’s time to create a consistent real-life routine that supports your body & mind.
3.
Re-assess Your Career
Scenario: The thought of heading back to 2. Review Your Financial Well-being work fills you with dread. Do I work from home or do I go into the office? Whilst it Scenario: Agh, money! This one makes you would be great to see peers and catch up cringe at the thought of the next credit card the thought of the whole day at work adds bill arriving in your inbox. Those “just have to the anxiety you are already experiencing it” purchases during the holidays are now catching up with you and it’s bringing with it and you wonder why you didn’t put more heightened anxiety to the point it makes you effort into the job search last year. You’ve found you have a new routine that fits a daily feel physically sick. You’ve avoided dealing with the financial plan for the last year so now morning routine that used to be consumed it is time to get real, it’s time to bring in what by commuting and you are more productive and the fear of this changing makes you want you are worth! It’s time to take charge and to change jobs. Now is the opportunity to own your financial direction and planning, evaluate what’s working and what can be one-step-at-a-time. improved; job change or not.
20 | Hepburn
Hepburn | 21
4.
Re-store Your Life
Scenario: Your life is compartmentalised, you attempt to keep work and life separate. You enjoy spending time with friends, yet often find you are comparing yourself to those around you and wishing you had made different decisions so you’d be in a different/better place now. You constantly wonder what the future will bring and planning, that’s just too hard. Your life links to a cycle and the cycle for you right now is overwhelming, you know this part of your life needs attention, you just don’t know where or how to start. It’s time to remove the overwhelm and create the life you really want to live, to thrive not just survive.
5. Re-evaluate Relationships Scenario: You’ve got friends, family and peers in your life, maybe a partner or significant other, yet you feel disconnected at times and would like to have deeper and more meaningful relationships. Your relationship with yourself is often a rollercoaster ride and being hard on yourself, with high expectations is normal. It’s time to find the right tribe, identify who lights you up, makes you smile and supports you (as much as you support them).
You’re a hig achiever and wonder if “it’s” ever going to happen! Every year at this point in time you get to this point reflecting on what has been and where you are going and wonder what is next? 22 | Hepburn
If by this point you are feeling emotionally drained, you’re in the right place. It’s time to “listen to your body”. We know our bodies are smart, correct? So why do we continue to ignore the signs and warnings, relentlessly pushing harder thinking we’ll reach some holy grail of a “balanced life”. Balance and reality are not friends. When you consider balance, think of the see-saw in the park, one side is always higher or lower than the other; and if there is balance, it’s literally for a fleeting moment. Here’s my three pillars give you the platform to living a satisfying, fulfilling and harmonious life:
1. Your Work & Life Synergy plan 2. Your Mental Hygiene plan 3. Your Burnout Prevention plan Work & Life Synergy vs Balance
Your Mental Hygiene Mental Health has gone through a massive de-stigmatisation. Whilst some have suffered for years in silence and experiencing judgement, many have just experienced what it’s like to struggle with mental health challenges, specifically what it’s like to feel extreme lows where you stop caring, have zero focus and consider that opting out of life is a solution. This is why a mental hygiene plan is essential for everyone. Considering your mental hygiene practice being similar to the exercise we do to keep our bodies fit and strong, you’ve got the idea behind the importance of supporting and exercising the mind in a preventative way. The combination of meditation, nutrition, stress reduction, anxiety triggers and mindset management combined with our overall outlook on life & work are contributing factors that form an integral part in developing a consistent mental hygiene plan that contributes to your preventative health and prevents the spiral into a full mental health breakdown. There is no health without mental hygiene.
If there is no balance then does that mean there is no hope? Once you identify that finding “balance and reality” don’t work then you can move forward and create what is achievable and that’s “work & life synergy”, where you set the framework to lean in when need be, preparing and setting points to re-group and establish boundaries that will protect you and what’s important to you, whilst retaining the ability to be productive and focused to deliver outcomes. Changes in the way we work and live have expedited the options to apply work and life in synergy.
Hepburn | 23
Your Burnout Prevention Plan
1. Slow Down, Please!
Burnout is also a condition that you’ve no doubt heard about and is on the increase both at work and outside work. The World Health Organisation now acknowledges burnout as a workplace phenomenon. Knowing the signs of burnout and being able to identify these are important to treating and or preventing burnout progressing. Your habits and beliefs that have been formed for many years can be contributing to the development of burnout without you having any awareness and therefore no way of changing.
When you drive through a school zone, the legal speed limit is 40km, during the designated times, well we’re the same, we need to slow down at times and change the pace.
Creating an awareness of burnout and the associated signs is the baseline to a burnout prevention plan, getting support and being held accountable is the path to preventing burnout happening or reoccurring.
Begin with Energy & Enthusiasm Whilst you might be starting the year full of energy and enthusiasm you need to have a sustainable plan in place that is robust enough to keep you going when the pressures rise & challenges appear. You’ve started your year of self-development and improvement. Here’s three tips to keep your momentum & care for yourself, by turning up the volume on your ability to listen to your body!
Rest assured,it is ok to speed up when you want to and it is easy to do this. It’s likely you are better at speeding up than slowing down. We all have plenty of practice in this department. So, if we want to slow down enough to hear something, (your body’s needs) we need to practice this, too.
2. Breathe Deeply to Encourage Relaxation When you breathe normally, you don’t create unusual sensations in your body, so this readily translates to virtually no sensation at all. Breathe deeply and make yourself as conscious of your breathing as possible. Breathing has a wonderful way of centering the mind and body and can really reframe your state. Try it now! Build in relaxation to your breathing, you will get more benefit and feel less tense and stiff. If it helps put your hand on your stomach to feel the ebb and flow of the breath and you’ll feel the stomach rise and fall with your breathing which can help induce a meditative state, picture the air filling your body and flooding all that oxygen through you.
3. Move without Thinking or Deciding Let your breath do this for you, and practice first in your body. When you’re relaxed, your inhales will give you a lift, and your exhales will make you more movable. So let it move, don’t think, just move and go with the flow of the breath. You may feel inspired by music that is playing and start dancing or singing, allow yourself to simply be. There is no need to make decisions, just move, breathe and go with the flow. 24 | Hepburn
It’s Your Time to Shine Now it’s time to leave behind the experiences that have left you unfulfilled and uninspired. Make the year ahead, your time to shine. Apply the three life plans I’ve shared here and you’ll be on your way. If you need help, I’d be delighted to guide and support you through your best year!

Sleep for Success Georgie Arnaud
Don’t
let life get in the way of your beauty sleep. I know that it can be difficult to remember to take care of ourselves at times, especially at this time of the year. The festive season has come and gone, so now instead of recovering from that busy period you’re probably thinking, ‘now I have to start preparing for a new year ahead.’ As much as that may be exciting, it is essential to take a moment to restore our sleep patterns and release any stress we’ve brought into the New Year. Let’s celebrate the year that’s just finished by celebrating our own wellbeing. If you have caught yourself zoning in and out of conversations lately or simply lacking the energy to get through the day, you need to start prioritising your rem cycle. Here’s how and why you should be getting some shut eye.
26 | Hepburn
“Your future depends on your dreams, so go to sleep.” – Mesut Barazany
1. Fitting sleep into your busy schedule
Have you noticed yourself zoning out during meetings or in conversations with work colleagues? You may be experiencing fatigue from unbalanced sleep patterns. It’s common when starting a new year to find ourselves pushing a bit too hard to ‘start the year off right’ or achieve all of our new year’s resolutions as soon as possible. We tend to disregard the fact that we need rest in order to be our productive, successful selves. It’s all about balance. Think about it this way, if you don’t give your mind and body the chance to recover each night, you’re probably never giving 100 per cent to your job or any of your other daily activities. You will never reach your full potential without first looking after yourself.
2. Recovering from Christmas stress
We’ve had a long, tough year. Don’t just ignore what you’ve been through in the last year or through the stressful Christmas season. Recognise the struggles you’ve overcome in 2021 and make an effort to start fresh. Somewhere along the way we all forgot to give ourselves a break and give ourselves that eight hours of sleep each night. It’s not too late to take control of our rem sleep and start the year revived and ready to go.
3. Returning to work environments
Office Christmas party fun would’ve been an exciting way for most of us to enjoy the new freedoms we’ve been granted after a long year of on and off lockdowns. However, the initial shock of normal socialisation would’ve been overwhelming and somewhat exhausting for some. It’s important that we acknowledge this and start to reintroduce healthy habits towards everyday connections with our friends and family again. Let’s focus on reigniting these friendships and returning to our energetic sociable selves, slowly but surely. How can you do this you may ask?
Hepburn | 27
Here are my tips and tricks to rejuvenating myself for the new year.
Salvaging your sleep patterns So, let’s explore some ways you can start making your sleep a priority rather than a convenience. Life is too short to disregard looking after ourselves and be present in everyday life. Some basic need to know tips are: Making sure you set boundaries with work- don’t sacrifice your health by overworking yourself. Once you get home each day, shut all distractions from your job off and only focus on you time. A proven way to improving sleep is being consistent with your diet- If caffeine is likely to keep you up at night make sure you’re watching your intake, and I know we all get a bit peckish around bedtime but it’s best to finish food intake a couple of hours before bed for good digestion, leading to a better night’s sleep. Lastly, a regular and consistent sleep cycle is guaranteed to improve your sleep quality- ensure if you are getting a certain number of hours of sleep every night that you are getting that same amount each and every night. Set alarms to remind you if need be.
“The minute anyone’s getting anxious I say, ‘You must eat and you must sleep.’ They’re the two vital elements for a healthy life.” — Francesca Annis

Sleep retreats It’s challenging to escape the everpresent technology and busyness of our everyday working lives, however what you could consider, is attending the very unique and modern experience of a sleep retreat. Rejuvenate yourself through the deep, relaxation methods of natural therapies, holistic treatments, and personal consultations. If you’re really struggling to balance your sleep and get a good night’s rest, there are multiple destinations across Australia that specialize in restoring your normal sleep pattern. Some possible getaways are: Golden Door Health Retreat NSW, Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat QLD, and The Sleep Detective Melbourne.
Yoga retreats If you are looking to simply take a break from working or the stresses of life and recover for the year ahead, a yoga retreat could be your solution. Yoga retreats focus on reviving your energy and caring for your holistic wellbeing. They offer a variety of classes focused on pain relief, grief or trauma, gut health and a variety of other healing options targeted at your personal growth. As a result, studies have shown that yoga balances sleep patterns and is likely to reduce insomnia, due to the breathing awareness and mindful approach of yoga practice. Some options for yoga retreats in Australia are- BIYOME in Brisbane, Rasalila in Byron Bay NSW, Samadhi Retreat in Daylesford, Victoria.
Meditation and Self-care The most accessible solution to rejuvenating your mind and soul before the working year, is to practice meditation and self-care each night. You can do this from the comfort of your own home, and it only takes a few minutes each night to relax yourself before your head hits the pillow. Simply take a seat anywhere you feel comfortable and start to take note of your breath, each time you feel yourself drifting away, bring yourself back to the present moment. In regard to selfcare, having a regular skincare or nightly routine will help to prepare yourself for rest and remind your body that you’re there to take care of it but now it’s time to take a break. If you want to practice a deeper understanding of meditation, consider attending a meditation or silent retreat, where you can find your peace in a quiet environment. You could visit Kadampa Meditation Centre in Brisbane or Perth, Billabong Retreat Sydney, or any of the many retreats around Australia. You may not even think of sleep as one of your top five priorities right now, but the reality is if you fall behind in salvaging your sleep this year, overtime it will reflect in your job, your relationships and being present in your everyday life. Make sure you start this year right and acknowledge everything you’ve accomplished despite the obstacles thrown at you last year. After all, you have to wake up with yourself every day for the rest of your life, therefore you are the most important priority. So, remember sleep equals success and you can’t have success without a good night’s sleep.

Is Envy & Jealousy
Dominating You?
32 | Hepburn
“The surest route to breeding jealousy is to compare. Since jealousy comes from feeling less than another, comparisons only fan the fires.” - Dorothy Corkille Briggs
How often have you desired a job, project or role that was offered to one of your colleagues? Have you wished your peer well but felt a well of envy building up or even worse did you become jealous of your teammate? We have probably all felt the pangs of envy at some time in our career. Sometimes a little envy maybe the impetus to self-improvement. Particularly, if we recognise what made us feel envious or jealous. However, when you allow negative emotions to dominate your thoughts, your negativity will become hard to hide, may jeopardise your career trajectory, and may prevent you from realising your maximum potential.
Envy or Jealousy We often use Envy and Jealousy interchangeably but in truth these two negative emotions are quite different. Envy s the feeling we have when we want something that someone else has. Perhaps you want a new company car just like your colleague. You may feel envious of a colleague if they receive a promotion that you applied for but missed out on. You may feel the sting of envy particularly if you feel you were the better candidate.
Jealousy is quite a different feeling. You feel jealousy over something that you already have but are afraid of losing. Competition in a workplace may trigger jealousy. If you manage a key client, but a colleague is campaigning to takeover that client, you may feel a jealous, particularly if the relationships and networks are still developing and not that strong. You might become jealous of your colleague if they develop a close relationship with your manager. You may become worried that you will be overlooked for career or project opportunities.
Conquering Envy & Jealousy Whether you find yourself becoming envious or jealous in the workplace, or for that matter in any situation, these emotions arise from your own or other people’s insecurities. Often these negative emotions will manifest into negative behaviours. People may become disparaging of another’s success and may start distancing themselves from the person at the centre of their envy or jealousy. But these feelings can be managed.
Hepburn | 33
8 Ways to Conquer Envy & Jealousy 1.
Find the cause of your negative emotions, ask why until you find the root cause.
2.
Improve your own self-worth with continued learning and experience the different
3.
Build your workplace and social networks into solid relationships
4.
Develop intentional communication to discuss the wins, challenges and concerns
5.
If you’re a high achiever find the opportunity to mentor your peers
6.
Observe people’s signals, cues and behaviours to strengthen your relationships
7.
Celebrate your colleagues success and learn to be genuinely happy for them
8.
Know when to squash the problem and have someone intervene if necessary
It is worth remembering people rarely succeed on the first attempt. Your colleague’s success will have come with many setbacks throughout their career. So celebrate their win, foster good social and workplace relationships and your time to shine will come too!

Gaslighting
Recognising the Villian As we start to regroup and return to the office, we need to again become aware of office politics, team dynamics, bullyies, backstabbers, those who seek to harm us for their own career advatage. We also need ot recognise and have the skillset to react darker villians who may seek to undermine our confidence. Gaslighting is one ways these villians may set out to weaken us emotionally. We have all been guilty of saying “You’ve already told me that” or “You don’t know what you are doing”, “You are being over sensitive”. In general these little phrases are simply statements of fact. But if these little statements or similar words are used over and over again to undermine your confidence and belief in yourself, someone may be trying to manipulate you by Gaslighting. Gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse. The abuse is gradual and may leave victims feeling confused, anxious, and unable to trust themselves, cognitively or emotionally. Anyone can experience gaslighting, in intimate relationships, in social interactions or even in the workplace. It is especially common where there is an imbalance of power within the relationship. The term “gaslighting” actually originates from playwright Patrick Hamilton’s 1938 mystery thriller “Gas Light”. You may

be familiar with the 1944 movie starring Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer. The story reveals a diabolic plot by the husband Gregory who manipulates his trusting wife Paula into believing she is losing her mind and can no longer trust her own perceptions of reality, so that he can have her committed into a mental institution and steal her inheritance. Contemporary, Noregian mystery drama series “Outlier” is a modern teledrama highlighting gaslighting in personal and workplace relationships through its subplots. Most people have experienced gaslighting at some point in our lives. So it is important to learn how to recognise the technique, deal with it, and minimize any psychological impact. If not dealt with, psychologists warn gaslighting can have a devastating and long-term impact on our emotional, psychological, and even physical well-being. It’s important to also understand that the genuine disagreement within a relationship may be beneficial and is not gaslighting.
Gaslighting in the Office It could be your manager, co-worker, a client, a frenemy or even the person in human resources. It is important to identify not only their behaviours but you behaviours as well. Some signs you may be victim to a gaslighter include: •
You overwork yourself just to “prove yourself”
•
You feel incompetent
•
You lack self confidence
•
You are uncharacteristically jealous or insecure
Gaslight Techniques Gaslighting follows a gradual abusive approach, making it difficult for the victim to detect. Some techniques a person may use to gaslight someone include: Countering: questioning the victim’s memories. “You never remember things accurately,” or “Are you sure? Withholding: refusing to engage in a conversation. “I do not know what you are talking about,” or “you are just trying to confuse me.” Trivializing: belittling the victim’s feelings. “You’re just being too sensitive” or “You are overreacting” Denial: pretending to forget events. “That didn’t happen” or “Your just making that up to confuse me” Diverting: refocussing of a discussion to question the victim’s credibility. “that is just another crazy idea you got from your friends.” Stereotyping: intentionally using negative stereotypes of the victim’s gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, nationality, or age to manipulate them. “Everyone will think you crazy if you go to a psychologist”.
“ If you are going to trust one person, let it be yourself.
”

How to deal with Gaslighting
Examples of Gaslighting at Work:
Identify the Perpetrator’s Behavior Patterns - Look out for patterns that confuse you and consider whether they are gaslighting you.
The gaslighter:
Trust Your Instincts - Trust yourself, your thoughts and your feelings.
makes a racist or sexist comment only to condemn it when other colleagues do the same thing,
Stand Strong - Don’t let their words or actions affect you or your work. Document everything - Keep a diary, write down what was done and said, later look for patterns of behaviour. Consciously Affirm Your Self Beliefs Remind yourself that your work is valuable and you are valued. Be direct - Try to address the situations directly with the gaslighter. Talk to a colleague you can trust - If it feels safe, bring up what’s been happening and ask if they’ve been harassed in this way as well. Meet with Management - Stay professional and address the issue with your manager and bring your notes. Let it go - You can’t control anyone’s opinion, the only person whose opinion you can control is your own. Consider moving on – if there is no solution, you need to look after yourself. Leaving this job may be the best career move you will ever make.
- says they never got the presentation you definitely turned in on time and you have the sent receipt in your email outbox,
shifts or borrows and replaces items on your desk without asking, says it’s fine to skip that a.m. meeting but then emails you about missing the meeting, or changes company policies to suit their own objective, whim or mood.
“Some people will label you as vindictive, unforgiving or even evil for not allowing them to hurt you, yet again.” ― Wayne Gerard Trotman
Gaslighters are people While we might wish to hate them, gaslighters are people too! And gaslighting is a learned behaviour. The gaslighter may not be acting with malicious intent nor even realize that they are using Gaslighting behaviours.
“The gaslighter may not even know he is doing anything strategic or manipulative. He lacks self-awareness and may just think he is expressing himself directly, or is prone to unflinching honesty…” ― Robyn Stern

Love yourself If you are in a compromising dynamic, practising some self-love may not be easy. Make time each day to gift yourself some kindness and allow yourself to believe in yourself and to feel your emotions. This will help you when you are not feeling confident and strong. If you are struggling, seek professional help. There is no shame only strength in admitting you need some help to recover.
“Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life, but define yourself.” ― Harvey Fierstein

Create Your Personal Financial Plan for 2022 We have all been enjoying living and working in a somewhat unstructured way, with working from home, tolerating and accepting change, and expecting the unexpected. Some of us have suffered huge financial losses over the couple of years. Some readers will say we lost jobs, we lost investment value, we lost investment income. Others will say, well our credit card debt sky-rocketed, as we embrace an online spending spree. We took home loan repayment holidays only to be stung with a growing debt as interest still accrued. This unstructured way of living permeates our mindset and leaks into the way we manage our financial wellbeing. So while, we adjust to a new raft of COVID uncertainty, it’s time to close out the unstructured mentality and start 2022 with a healthy personal financial plan. You may not have financial balance in mind or not know where to begin. So we are setting out the basic structure to step you through building your 2022 balanced personal financial wealth plan.
Hepburn | 41
Start a Personal Budget A personal budget is a summary of your income and expenses, that allows you to plan your saving, and your spending. Once you have created a budget, it becomes a useful tool to track your financial behaviours and help achieve your personal goals. A budget also, allows you to manage your debt repayments and plan to reduce that debt. If you have funds available, it is good for the soul to set aside a part of the budget for donations.
1. From Empty Nester to Downsizer To start your personal budget, you will need to gather your financial documents, e.g.: -
Bank statements
-
Credit card statements
-
Investment accounts
-
Payslips
-
Recent bills
-
Receipts from the last three months
-
Home loan statements
-
Car loan statements
2. Calculate your income Include all income you regularly receive and income from any other sources, such as child support or social security. Use your bank statements, receipts, payslips and any other information from the last three months to identify your income. -
Wages
-
Investment Income
-
Child Support
-
Social Securities
-
Pensions
Make a list of the income and record the amount you received. Total your income for each month.
42 | Hepburn
3. List your spending Use your bank statements, receipts, and credit card statements from the last three months to identify your spending. -
Mortgage payments or rent
-
Car payments
-
Insurance
-
Groceries
-
Utilities
-
Entertainment
-
Personal care
-
Eating out
-
Childcare
-
Transportation costs
-
Travel
-
Credit card payments
-
Savings
-
Emergency Funds
-
Private Health Insurance
Make a list of the spending and record the amount you paid. Total your spending for each month.
4. Total net income Now subtract the total spending from total income and you will have an estimate of your net monthly income. Like permanent rentals, you will need to include your rental income and expenses in your tax return. If you are starting out or simply offering the space on an ad hoc basis you will still need to include the net rental income or loss in your income tax return.
5. Warning Will Robinson! WARNING: If your spending is more than your income, you will need to adjust your spending. Work through the list of spending. Look to see if there is anything that you can reduce, If there was an unusual one-off payment, such as paying for a new car in one payment or if you paid a large amount of your home loan, then these should be removed. If you still have thee debts, then allocate a reasonable monthly amount for that item.

Reduce Spending
Reduce Debt
Make, 2022 the year to curb your desire for excessive or discretionary spending sprees. Focus on reducing your non-essential spending. Those lattes you are enjoying every day, may not seem much at the time, but cutting back on one coffee each day will save you around $1,000 per year.
Make, 2022 the year to regain control of your personal finances. Focus on reducing your Debt. Right now, interest rates are still at an all-time low. At the time of writing, the Reserve Bank is still holding the interest rate at 0.10% and the banks rates are similarly low. Set your goal to get out of Debt
Set your goal to Curb the Spending
Getting out of debt is a personally rewarding and liberating feeling. Not only that, once you have paid off that debt, you will have more money to play with, to save, to give or to invest.
Shopping can be so much fun but that feeling of instant gratification isn’t really helping you achieve financial freedom or growing your wealth. So next time you are ready to spend, think can I be doing something better with this money.
Following are our tips to start reducing your debt: •
Set up a debt repayment plan
•
Switch credit cards to lower interest rate or 0% rate cards
•
Here are some tips to start curbing your spending:
Sell any unused items, check out local facebook groups
•
Tighten your spending belt
•
Write a shopping list and only buy what is on the list
•
Turn your hobby into a earning machine
•
Buy one less coffee/tea/smoothie/juice every day
•
Get a second job or start a side hustle
•
Commit to sticking to the plan
•
Cut down on the number of times your eat out or buy in
•
“Commit to sticking to the plan”
•
Think about what you need as opposed to what you want
•
Consider if you really need those gorgeous shoes at the moment
•
Set a fixed amount each week for fun money
•
Commit to sticking to the plan
Getting out of debt is a personally rewarding and liberating feeling. Not only that, once you have paid off that debt, you will have more money to play with, to save, to give or to invest.
TIP: With the home loan interest rates so low, now is the time to pump extra cash into your loan to reduce the principal component. You’ll be surprised, once you have a debt management plan you will find your stress levels and productivity at work or in your business will improve.
TIP: With that extra money that you didn’t spend, pop it into a separate savings account. Then leave that account alone so you can monitor how much you really spend over the year. You’ll be surprised, once you have a spending reduction plan you will find yourself smiling as those small amounts grow and become money that you can use towards a bigger goal.
Hepburn Hepburn | 45 | 45
Start Saving You should set aside at least 10% of your income each month. Set up a separate bank account, so that you can see your savings grow. While, the interest rates, don’t seem to make savings worthwhile at present, at some stage interest rates will increase and you will have established a savings behaviour. You need to know why you are saving and how much you want to save. Establish a savings goal, such as I want to save $10,000 to go on a holiday to the Great Barrier Reef or I want to save $100 from each pay to save for an emergency. Set up a separate savings account, so that you can watch your savings grow. If you are setting up an emergency fund, set up a separate bank account for this fund. If you don’t have a need for the extra savings, think about placing this into your superannuation fund instead. But remember, unless you have reached retirement age, or one of the conditions of release this money must remain in the superannuation fund. See these useful tips to start your savings plan: •
Establish your savings goal
•
Set up a separate saving bank account
•
Reduce your discretionary spending
•
Look for a bank account that has no bank fees
•
Regularly review the interest rate payable.
•
If interest rates go up, switch to the higher interest earning account
You’ll be surprised, once you have a savings plan in place, you will find watching your savings grow will bring a smile to your face.
46 | Hepburn
Start Investing An investment plan allows you to grow your wealth through an investment portfolio and enjoy a diversified income stream. For example, if you buy shares, you may receive dividend income or if you invest in a managed fund you may receive a trust distribution. Set aside an amount from each pay that will go towards your investment portfolio. Your investment portfolio may include, cash, property, shares, unit trusts, cryptocurrency, gold, and collectibles. See these useful tips to start your investment plan: •
Speak with a financial advise
•
Learn about the stock market, the Australian Stock Exchange has online training
•
Read investment books
•
Join an investment club, but check them out thoroughly
•
Understand your personal attitude to risk
•
Set up a savings account for your investment plan
Investing can be risky, so we highly recommend that you speak with a financial adviser who, understand the type of investment that you are interested in. You wouldn’t go to a Toyota repairer of you own a Mercedes Benz. Likewise, if you want to invest in gold, speak with an adviser that specialises in gold. You’ll be surprised, once you have an investment plan in place, you will find the investment value may go up and down, but you will learn more if you regularly record the changes in your investment’s value.
Smarter Goals
S
Goal setting is an important part of life and essential in developing your personal financial wealth plan. Goalsetting helps us align our desires and wants with an actionable plan and timeframe to achieve them.
M A
This time of year, we all make resolutions, yet hardly any resolution survives part one month. Overcome this New Year’s Syndrome with SMARTER Goals. SMARTER is a mnemonic acronym. The New Year is a great time to reset your financial goals and revise your monthly budget. New Year’s resolutions come and go! Be honest with yourself! Be realistic! Make small goals that are more achievable that can be your stepping stones to achieving your larger goals. Be SMARTER.
Start Giving While, establishing a giving plan may not help with your personal financial wealth plan, you will enjoy extra credits to your moral bank account. Giving to a charity adds to your feelings of kindness and you will be helping an organisation achieve its charitable objectives and you could be supporting another human being. Better still, if you gift to a tax deductible gift recipient, you may be entitled to a tax deduction for your donation. You’ll be surprised, once you have a giving plan in place, you will feel your well of kindness and empathy grow.
R T E R Based on the original SMART goals concept, first known writings by George T. Doran (November 1981 issue of Management Review), later adapted by Peter Drucker

Amazing Australian Women:
Ash Barty
Isabella Stephan
If I win, it’s a bonus. If I lose, the sun still comes up the next day, and it’s all good.”
Ranked world No 1 by the Women’s Tennis Association, Australian Ash Barty has dominated tennis courts around the globe, taking out the 2019 French Open, the 2021 Wimbledon Championship, and the 2018 Grand Slam doubles title at the US Open. Her drive to become a professional tennis player began as a young child when she decided to quit playing netball, as she believed her two older sisters were better at the sport and because she ‘thought netball was a girls’ game’.
5050| |Hepburn Hepburn
The beginning of her life started in Ipswich, just west of Brisbane City, where she attended a local state college for high school and lived in the suburbs of Springfield. She started training with her first tennis coach, Jim Joyce, when she was just four years of age at the West Brisbane Tennis Centre in Richlands. Her junior coach recalls that he usually didn’t train children at such a young age; however, Barty’s high level of focus, determination, and brilliant hand-eye coordination shone through, and he made the exception for her. He fondly remembers their first training session, “the first ball I threw to her, bang! She hit it right back.” Barty was enthralled by the sport and began practising it in her spare time at home, recounting, “I used to hit the ball against the wall exterior to our living room every day after school, for hours on end.” Some would say her childhood flew by as she devoted it to tennis. When she was nine years old, she was versing boys who were at least six years her senior, and by the time she was twelve, she was versing male adults in matches. Her coaching team grew bigger the more she captivated those who saw her play, with former Australian tennis player Scott Draper joining her team who once reached the fourth rounds of both the French and US Open in the 1990s. Former professional tennis player Jason Stoltenberg, known for coaching Lleyton Hewitt, also joined Barty’s team and became her primary coach when she was just 15. She played as a junior for most of her teen years, leading her to travel to Europe and play in tournaments across several different countries. This meant that Barty was away from her home country for the majority of the year, recounting that she was only in Australia for just under a month during this time period. She had impressive wins during her junior tennis career, reaching a world junior ranking of No. 2. Her junior career began when she was 13 in 2009, where she played at low-level events to climb the ranks. The first title that she won was the Grade 4 Australian International when

she was just shy of her 14th birthday before securing a Grade 2 title in Thailand. She moved up to the higher tiers within the junior circuit early the following year, playing her first junior grand slam at the Australian Open. Although Barty lost her opening match, she regained her winning streak a few months later at the Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup in Malaysia and at the Belgian International Junior Championships. Later on, she won the junior Grand Slam title at Wimbledon at 15, becoming the first Australian girl to win a junior Grand Slam singles title since the ’90s. She began her professional tennis career in 2010 at an International Tennis Federation event in Ipswich, where she continued to play other events around Australia. She debuted at Brisbane International and Hobart International before making her Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open, where she was defeated. However, she won her first two WTA (worldwide top-tier tennis tour for women) at the Malaysian Open. In 2013, Barty partnered with Australian tennis player Casey Dellacqua for all four Grand Slam tournaments, where they won runner-up for three of the events. Her achievements over the years include becoming the youngest Gram Slam finalist at the Australian Open and the first duo (with Dellacqua) to reach the women’s doubles final since 1977. These triumphs placed her 100 spots down the list to No. 46 in the world.
“That top 100 is a big barrier that every tennis player strives to break into.”

“
I love the sport of tennis, but I sort of got a little bit away from what I really wanted to do. It became robotic for me, and that’s not what I wanted. It’s such an amazing sport, and I just really wanted to enjoy it, and I lost that enjoyment and that passion. Barty then returned to tennis in 2016, where she qualified for the Eastbourne Trophy and the Nottingham Open, making it to the quarterfinals. Major highlights of her career include when she played in the Cincinnati Open and won her match against No. 9 Venus Williams, winning doubles at the Italian, Canadian, and US Opens, and winning Grand Slam singles at both the French and US Open, becoming No. 1 in the world in 2019. In 2021, after a COVID-19 hiatus, Barty continued to play and won the Miami, Stuttgart, Wimbledon, and French Opens and also represented Australia for the 2020 Summer Olympics. Barty is also the National Indigenous Tennis Ambassador for Tennis Australia as she is a member of the Ngaragu people through her greatgrandmother. Her new role is to promote more Indigenous participation within the sport.
“I’m a very proud Indigenous woman, and I think that for me taking on this role is something very close to my heart.”

First Things First If you are thinking fo starting your own business, then you probably have what is consdiered and entrepreneurial mindset. You may think, I’m not an entrepreneur, I don’t want to become Richard Branson or Elon Musk. So, just what is an entrepreneur? Do you know what an entrepreneur is? There are actually many definitions but we will stick with a simple definition. An entrepreneur is someone who starts a business, taking on the financial risk in the hope of a profit. There is really nothing stopping you from becoming an entrepreneur. While a little education and a good bank account certainly help, they are not real necessities to starting out on your own. You don’t even need business experience. But what you do need is a plan.
Step 1. It All Starts with You Every journey you take begins with you and what you want to do. Chances are you have dabbled in business already, you might have a side-hustle, you may have a friend who seems to be doing well running their own business, or you work for an entrepreneur and think you could do this to, or you hate your 9-5 job with a vengeance. When you are in a secure job and earning a regular income, having a side hustle may give you the confidence to jump ship and really focus on your business. Being employed and earning that regular income is very different to being selfemployed. Not only do you lose the regular pay check, but if you are going into the venture be yourself you have no one to discuss your business ideas, concerns, and problems with. At least not until you find the right network. So before you begin this journey, think about the following? Am I ready to run my own business? Do I have the necessary skills to do this? Do I have the finances to start? Do I understand my responsibilities? Do I understand the risks involved? Can I cope with a high level of risk? Can I cope with fluctuating income? Can I cope if sales are down? Can I cope with doing everything myself? What are my strengths? What are my weaknesses? Does my partner support my decision?
62 | Hepburn
Self Evaluation Life can be a little rocky when you start a business. Income is generally fairly unstable when you start and you will still have to manage your usual household expenses as well as manage the business expenses that are now burning a hole in your pocket. Then there is a risk that sales may not be stable for many months or they may be seasonal and you may have to do a lot of marketing before you see any money coming in. Ask yourself: Is this something that I can cope? Can I handle the stress of uncertain or fluctuating income? If you feel that you may be able to handle this uncertainty, then you should sit down and really evaluate yourself. Before you start the business you need to consider what you are trying to achieve, why you want to achieve it, and can you achieve it.
I recently had a client who decided to buy a small hairdressing business. I was gobsmacked. My client had no experience in the industry and wasn’t qaulified. But the client showed she had the qualities to run a small business. She was determined, she was financially savvy, and she was resillient. The salon was located in a small shopping centre right beside a major chain store. Needless to say things did not start out smoothly, she became the apprentice in here own business. While her thinking was good, it actually caused some confusion about roles with the employees. Who was the boss? Who was the junior? The client then began her course leaving her staff in charge of the salon whilst she was away. This required a lot of trust in her staff. This client actually made a success of the business, trained her staff up, paid them well, won industry awards, and then sold the business when she was ready for a new challenge. But one success story doesn’t always mean every venture is a success. Hepburn | 63
“Every time you state what you want or believe, you’re the first to hear it. It’s a message to both you and others about what you think is possible. Don’t put a ceiling on yourself.” - Oprah Winfrey Before you start out in your business, you need to understand your strengths and weaknesses. You need to understand what YOU bring to the table. Think about the knowledge, skills, and experience have you gained over your career. Now add to this your life skills. If you’re a parent then add these skills as well. These are your personal assets that can be used in the business. Take a look at your personal resume, list out all your assets. Evaluate your values, likes and dislikes, your wants and your needs. Think about whether you like working alone or with others. Is running a green, sustainable ethical business of high importance to you? Do you want a home office where you can work in you can have “business up top” zoom meetings with potential clients? Are you diligent, can you rely on yourself if you work from home? Is having an office or a shop front more important to you. Next think about what you want to achieve in the business, in your life, and in your relationships. If you want to do the Artic marathon next year, then this would not be a good time to start your business. You need to focus on the business and forget about competing priorities. Your business and your family must take priority.

Next think about what you want to achieve in the business, in your life, and in your relationships. If you want to do the Artic marathon next year, then this would not be a good time to start your business. You need to focus on the business and forget about competing priorities. Your business and your family must take priority. Next think about your financial goals. Do you want a small business, or you want to expand in the future? Do you want to make lots of money, or are you have with a comfortable life, with sufficient to get by? Are you good with money? Can you trust yourself with money. Make a list of your personal attributes. What you bring to the table. Your list might include: •
Self disciplined
•
Enquiring Mind
•
Optomisitic/Realistic
•
Financially savvy
•
Good with technology
•
Great Communicator
•
Public Speaking
•
Creative Thinker
•
Good networker
There are many more to explore.
Find a Mentor You should also list the attributes that you believe you lack. These are your weaknesses. How will you build upon your weaknesses? Is there someone else that can help with these attributes. A business mentor or even a life coach can help you develop in your areas of weakness. You may need more than one mentor or coach, different people will bring differing skillsets to the table. Mentors and Coaches will also communicate differently, which will add a different dynamic to your discussions and learning.

Inspirational International Women
Maye Musk “Whatever obstacle is in front of you, you have to address it and find another way to sort it out.” Best-selling author, model, dietitian and speaker Maye Musk is certainly a powerful and influential role model to many. She is still modelling today at age 73 and continues to spread her wisdom to younger women and readers of her book ‘A Woman Makes a Plan: Advice for a Lifetime of Adventure, Beauty, and Success.’ She is also mother to the richest man on earth- Elon Musk, and you know what they say “behind every successful man is a very strong woman.” Elon has had his fair share of attention; it is time to pay tribute to the woman who raised the popular entrepreneur, while also achieving her own outstanding accomplishments.
66 | Hepburn
Maye began her modelling career as a teenager in South Africa, a friend of her parents ran a modelling school and agency, so she was easily immersed in the modelling occupation at a young age. However, she discusses in depth in her book that her real dream was to attend university. Maye is truly influential in her expression of women being about more than just their appearance. She’s passionate about the importance of planning ahead and the benefits it can reap for your life. While completing her degree Maye also continued to model and straight after her studies, got married. She started her own nutrition practice at 22, slowly building clients as she made good money through modelling gigs. She then almost immediately started a family and after her third child, jumped straight into modelling again. This is when she became the oldest model in South Africa at age 28.

“At twenty-one you are no longer an orphan. This means, you need to take responsibility for your future life. The harder you work, the easier it is for luck to find you.” Maye advocates women don’t have to stop moving just because their age increases, she is living proof that women can achieve anything at any age, as long as you have a plan and a positive outlook. Maye continued to model as a single mum in following years while also balancing her nutrition practice clients. She is known now for her unique look and eccentric hair styles, and the confidence in which she carries herself. She influences all women and men to dare to be different and never limit yourself because of your age.
“Make a plan and take a chance.” Despite the many obstacles she had to conquer along the way, Maye was still seen plastered across billboards everywhere as a 67-year-old woman and to this day is a well-known model at 73. Maye claims her change to natural white hair, rather than attempting to hide her aging, has led to a lot of her success in modelling at an older age. She is authentic, she is intelligent and she is incredibly influential.
“No matter how big or small the opportunity, someone else will always answer the question for you of “why not?” But think about what’s going to make you happy.” Not only is Maye a well renowned supermodel and was the oldest Covergirl for four years, she’s also a talented speaker who presents to groups about prominent issues that everyone faces. Some of the concepts she is passionate about sharing with her listeners are: entrepreneurship, aging, gender equality, single parenting, overcoming challenges, and confidence. She aspires to reach people with her advice and wisdom to hopefully encourage
them to learn from her mistakes as well as her victories.
“You don’t have to plan every detail in your life, you can sort out your problems as they come along.” She’s redefining what aging is for a woman in this day and age, therefore influencing women to embrace their uniqueness regardless of their age. Hence Maye’s motto, “It’s great to be 73.” She’s a powerful business woman while also being the kind, compassionate presence in her family’s’ lives. She supports numerous charities and is the ambassador for Big Green, a charity that builds vegetable and fruit gardens in under privileged schools. Her commitment to modelling since she was 15, while pursuing her studies, proves her dedication and prevailing influence on all women. Her strength will continue to remind women of the many things we can achieve in our lifetime despite the overwhelming pressure from society to perform a certain role. Tune into her book available online and instore, to learn how to “Live dangerously- carefully” and achieve all your goals as Maye has done so successfully. I will leave you with this final quote from Maye.
“If at the moment you feel as though you don’t have any talents, go to a time in the past when you felt confident about some aspect of your life. Work on that section, study it, share it, and become more interesting. If you have a profession, a hobby, or a special interest, read about it, and mention it in conversations. Be excited about it, and you’ll be more interesting and more intelligent.” Hepburn | 69

What to wear this Season It feels like we only just wrapped our heads around the trends of winter wear, and now that summer is fast approaching, fashion trends are changing again. So, we took it upon ourselves to converse with the likes of beautiful Australian brands Zokky and Tengdahl on what we should wear for the Summer season.
We spoke to Zokky Novak, the Designer and Director of Melbourne fashion label Zokky, on what she believes women should be wearing this season, enlightening us about the bright block colours we’ve seen on the runways of late. ‘Bold colours never go out of fashion [but] they should be reserved for accessories’. While Julie Tengdahl, the CEO of Brisbane fashion label Tengdahl says flower colours such as orchard pinks, cherry pinks and whites are trending this season as well as earth-like colours (and we’re here for it!). She says a big trend that emerged from COVID-19 was slow fashion. Because of the pandemic this trend has been heightened and includes buying from local women in the industry and supporting sustainability, as well as appreciating artistic fabrics and artisan. Julie recognises this as a positive effect from the virus stating that the approach to sustainable fashion is necessary and ‘things need to slow down’.

highly trending this season. She further states that fibres such as linen, silk and handloom cotton should be worn as these are ‘hand-touch elements and are beautiful on the skin’. Zokky also made it clear (and for a good reason) that synthetics are never a good idea, and choosing linens, cotton, and wools is best (and breathable) for the warmer months ahead. Zokky further elaborates on the choice of garments talking specifically about floral prints, which of course, go hand in hand with spring and summer. ‘Florals are good, but you need to be careful with the size of the print,’ as some florals can be too large and come across as unflattering to the eye. Julie shares her opinion on prints, suggesting that women need to introduce more plain colours into their wardrobe as classic neutrals never tire and are a great mix with print garments.
Zokky says that smart casual and darker shades of charcoals and greys are best for older women coordinated with additional bright pops of colour. This is best for a woman who tends to stick to neutrals and darker shades but wants to branch out with their style. While the younger should try and opt for the brighter tones that are taking over the fashion scene. Zokky believes that now is the time for women to break out and wear different necklines and find items that please the eye. She also stated that tank tops in multiple colours are becoming increasingly popular this season and should be nicely paired with skirts, pants or worn underneath dresses. These casual but chic looks should be worn with sneakers for the everyday style as Julie states there is a resurgence of lower shoes to feel more grounded to the earth. Julie says classic drawstring linen pants and simple strap linen dresses in neutral shades are current go-to’s and
Hepburn Hepburn | | 73 73
Moving onto this season’s accessories, both designers provide their insightful and expert views on the topic. Julie talks about small and delicate pearl accessories that have been making a comeback recently, listing that pearl drops and necklaces, simple studs, opals, and stones are widely trending while fast, sparkly jewellery is not. Julie says it’s about ‘the things you cherish more’ and the everyday wear.

While Zokky says, women need to question their accessories carefully when it comes to florals. A whole lot of print and accessories layered over the top may be too much. She states that a woman needs a few different styled bags to match their shoes and events (we couldn’t agree more). She also says that small but stylish backpacks are ideal as they are practical for those on the move, are hands-free, and can’t be easily snatched.
So next time you’re shopping at your favourite designer stores remember that neutrals, earth shades, linens, bright and bubbly flower colours, minimal prints and everyday minimal accessories are the leading trends of the summer season.

What’s In The beginning of a New Year in the land down under always goes hand in hand with the Australian Open Grand Slam. This event brings some of the greatest tennis players from all over the globe to our country, including Rafael Nadal, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Madison Keys, Naomi Osaka, and our very own Australian champions, including Ash Barty and Nick Kyrgios. With plenty of brilliant matches happening day in and day out, you won’t be flicking around trying to find something to watch on the local channels in January. Our exceptional, good-mannered, well respected, and honest champion, who also holds a few Grand Slam titles from the past few years, has been dominating the Rod Laver tennis arena and has made her way to the final. Kyrgios, a somewhat polarizing character, has captivated the hearts of many Australians but has also divided the nation on whether he should be praised or not. But whether you like the talented player or would rather see his antics taken off the court, it can’t be denied that he is one of Australia’s current best. Making the crowd roar with his wins; these matches have been entertaining.

What’s OUT Undoubtedly COVID-19 has brought about a change in not only Australia but also the world. A change and a new normal that the earth’s entire population has been slowly dealing with and adapting to includes providing vaccine certificates, mandatory masks, and check-ins where no exceptions are made for anyone. These rules were made quite clear at the beginning of January when Novak Djokovic, the world’s current number one tennis player, was denied entry into the country after spending a few hours in the Melbourne International Airport. He was denied after flying in with a vaccine exemption, and further, after landing on our soil, his visa was cancelled because it was not a visa that allows for medical exemptions. After many days were spent in hotel quarantine with his team and after the intense legal battles were over, he was then deported from Australia unable to play in the Open. This may also mean that Djokovic could lose his world number one ranking, as other professional players will take the Australian Open Grand Slam title.
Overall, as most would know, the world is a different place from what it was before the pandemic, so the likes of visa restrictions, flying, getting into places, whether that’s your local shopping centre, café, or restaurant, is just more difficult and tighter than ever. And as the Australian Government goes to show no one will be an exception to these rules going forth. Take care everyne.

Passion 1. Any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling, as love or hate 2. A strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for anything
Is Anger Good for You? Anger is not one of the most pleasant emotions of a human being, but one that may overpower many other emotions. Life, in the 21st century and especially in the challenging times we’ve been experiencing, is not as easy and simple as it used to be. It is indeed full of exasperations and not all of us are stoics. Sometimes, it makes us impatient, frustrated, and angry at trivial things and sometimes it teaches us how to accept those emotions to be successful. How many times have you felt angry without regretting it later? The truth is you don’t have to regret feeling the way you do. .
82 | Hepburn
Being angry is just as normal and basic as being happy or sad, as long as your anger does not turn to aggression or impact your relationship with others. Knowing the reasons for your anger and how to manage it is very crucial for your mental health, but knowing how to express it without hurting somebody’s feelings is even more important in the current times. There is a difference between being angry to break something and being angry to fix something. When you are angry to rectify something or to make it better, you have a source of motivation that you should not let go.
Hepburn | 83
Anger as a source of motivation
Anger for better communication
Gender equality, celebration of LGBTQ+ community, environmental policies, race equality and all the improvements in the society that we have seen in this century would not have been possible if a cadre of activists did not get angry and fight for their rights. Sometimes, right things come from a surge of angered feelings. It is in that moment when one finds determination to reach a goal. When you find what you are fighting for, you emerge as a leader. Like Aristotle said, “Anybody can become angry – that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way – that is not within everybody’s power and is not easy.”
Suppressing your anger does not mean you are managing your anger. This also does not imply that you are entitled to hurt others verbally or physically. Anger can inspire you to communicate your needs and your true feelings with others. When you focus your attention on what you are feeling and not how others made you feel, you show compassion.
Anger fuels acceptance
Every time you get angry and every time you express your feelings, you come closer to yourself. Anger is an emotion that helps you realise what you really care about. Once you realise what you really care about, you find ways to effectively communicate it with compassion. Anger is a form of communication that fuels self-awareness and acceptance. The next time you find yourself being triggered by something, try to take a deep breath and understand why you are feeling what you are feeling. Let anger ignite your curiosity.
84 | Hepburn
At the same time, using too many “I” statements can make you look self-centred. Find the right balance. Instead of blaming the other person with “How could you do this?” make them understand why you are angry by saying “I felt upset when you did that.” Communicating with compassion will bring you solutions that will relax your mind. Anger can be uncomfortable for you and those around you. It can also be rewarding when you use it to improve yourself.
At the end of the day it’s all about making the right choices.

Exploring Archery
Get your archery game on! Who needs Robin Hood when you can be your very own Maid Marian? We’ve all seen it in action on well-to-do movies and even on the Olympics every four years, but have you ever thought to put the arrow to the bow yourself? The sport has been around for countless centuries, although it’s not one that many have participated in before. So, what better time to learn than just before cupid’s day? Said to have originated around the time of the Middle Stone Age, archery has been around in many shapes and forms adapting to each time period, and eventually evolving into what we know today. From being used in warfare and military practices to becoming a leisurely sport in the form of target archery, the game will continue to be a useful and rewarding skill to have. There are several types of archery that have evolved over the years that range from quite popular to unknown styles. Such types include 3D archery, a course that improves hunting skills and the likes of field archery which is designed with targets placed at varying distances, heights, and angles that is often done on rough terrain. Other types of archery include flight archery with the aim of reaching the longest distance and ski archery where archers in the snow aim for targets from keeling and standing positions. However, the most common style remains to be target archery where archers aim for targets between 18 to 90 metres away.
86 | Hepburn
Tips to remember before taking aim Now that you know about the several types of different archery styles that one can play let’s dive into how you can go from little experience to hitting the bullseye (or at the very least the target). First things first make sure you’re standing correctly. Walk to the shooting line and put your left foot in front of your right foot (for those who are right-handers) and place your feet parallel to the shooting line and shoulders-width apart. Stand with your knees slightly bent, your lower back as straight and flat as possible, and your shoulders relaxed instead of stiff. The technical term for placing an arrow onto the string of your bow is called ‘nocking the arrow’. Although, if you’re a beginner the professionals at the archery ranges will have put your arrow into place and set the nocking point for you. When aiming for the target make sure you don’t clench your grip too tightly as this can cause your hand to shake and therefore affect your aim. Instead, hold the bow with a relaxed grip, but tight enough to avoid dropping the weapon. When aiming at the target, aim directly toward what you want to hit but not above it. For a hot tip: remember to keep your arrow pointed down or directly in line towards the target but never up. Squeeze your shoulder blades together, keep your drawing wrist straight, your chest facing the target, and your dominant hand’s pointer finger nearing your mouth before letting the arrow go in one smooth motion.

THE GREATEST PLACES TO AIM AND SHOOT Sherwood Forest Activity Centre, England Feel like Robin Hood as you shoot arrows in the very same Sherwood Forest that he once did in Nottingham, England. Surrounded by nothing but grey skies and tall pine trees, it will feel as if you’ve stepped back in time using only archery to defend yourself from other team members (only this time the arrows are made from foam). You can also book in a one-hour session to test your aim with the proper equipment. Archery Adventures, Hawaii If you’ve never been or are longing to get back to the beautiful Hawaiian Islands, put Archery Adventures Hawaii on your to-do list while you’re there for a spectacular experience. With the twohour session available you’ll be able to wander through the forested slopes of Holualoa and get to try your hand at the sport in one of the most breathtaking forests in the world. TrollAktiv, Norway For those archery fanatics out there, you won’t want to miss booking in an archery experience at TrollAktiv in Norway. Embark on a two-hour adventure and aim to shoot at twenty 3D animal targets amongst the scenic mountains and rivers within the Nordic country. Sissi Archery, Greece Although, if you’d like to try archery within a confined space rather than in the great outdoors during your travels, we’d recommend Sissi Archery in Greece. The intimate and small archery range is located inside one of the many classic, white coloured buildings that Greece is renowned for. Here they provide you with their own bows and arrows and instruct archers through the ins and outs of the sport.

Get into the
Swing
The New Year means days in the sun and for keen tennis goers the beginning of the Australian Open. And although it’s exciting to watch your favourite player in a stadium filled with almost 15,000 other fans, for those who prefer some action and participation you’ll get into the swing with our pick of seven racket and ball pursuits.
Hepburn Hepburn | | 103 103
Totem Tennis One way to pass an afternoon on a lazy and relaxed weekend is a game of totem tennis. You may remember playing this in the backyard whne you were young, but that doens’t mean you can’t go it a go now. Get into the swing of things by playing a few rounds of a friendly totem tennis game with your family or friends. This game is an all-time backyard favourite and is a great way to get the tennis juices and the hand-eye coordination skills flowing. Totem tennis is a simple game set out with easy to understand rules, which is why it’s the perfect pass-time for anyone wanting to get into the motion of playing tennis. Simply set up the vertical pole firmly into the grass and go head-tohead, striking the ball with plastic racquets. With one player hitting clockwise and the other hitting anti-clockwise, the aim of totem tennis will become quickly realised as one player will win by hitting the ball in one direction until it can’t be hit further.

Beach Tennis Have you seen plenty of beach sports in action from afar and thought to yourself, maybe I should give that a go? Look no further than beach tennis. Give yourself a bit of a challenge this year and join in on all the fun the sport has to offer. After all, there’s no better time to head to the beach than at the beginning of the year where the weather is warm, and the water is cool, so it’s practically a win-win situation. This type of bat and ball sport is slightly harder as the surface is difficult to quickly run on (as anyone would know from walking up the beach after a long swim). Beach tennis also combines both elements of tennis and volleyball, which in turn will give you the ultimate workout as you verse your family, friends, or teammates in a doubles or singles game. Put in all of what you’ve got, and afterwards, you can treat yourself to a dip in the surf to cool down from the heated match!
Hepburn | 105
Badminton Have you ever tried your hand at badminton? If you prefer a bat and ball sport similar to that of tennis, then you might be on the brink of finding your next favourite sport. Gather a group of four friends together to play a game or have long rallies at a local badminton club. Run from one side of the court to the other as you reach for the shuttlecock and smash it over the metre and a half tall net to your opponent’s side. Whichever way you play the game, whether that be a competitive one between friends or a light and fun family game of badminton, overall, you’ll find yourself gaining new skills and benefiting from the exercise of the social activity. So now that you’re considering playing a game of badminton, you’re probably wondering where are the best places to do just that? The likes of Dragon Badminton Club based in Brisbane, Badminton Academy of Victoria Club based in Melbourne, An Yu Badminton Academy in Perth, and the Adelaide Badminton Club in South Australia are just a handful of some of Australia’s best clubs to try the sport at.

Table Tennis Table tennis, also known to many as pingpong, is a widely recognised sport played in the Olympics. If you haven’t before, try and test your abilities and skills with a game of table tennis. This game is a fun way to increase your concentration levels and your hand-eye coordination. This fun but challenging game of table tennis will also allow you to strategically plan your shots and take out the win if you’re swift and concise enough compared to your opponent (or friend). It’s also a great way to keep fit with friends or challenge your boss when you return to work. Plan your winning shots down the line or diagonally across the table like tennis champion Roger Federer and take out the title within your group. So where can I do this, you may be asking? There are plenty of national clubs around Australia where you can give table tennis your best shot. These include; Brisbane’s Table Tennis Association club, Ashfield Table tennis Club in Sydney, the Yarra Table Tennis Club in Melbourne, and the Eastside Table Tennis League located in Tasmania (to just name a few).

Clay Court Tennis Clay tennis courts are a fun, easy-going, and enjoyable surface suitable for all types of players. Because it’s made of limestone, crushed shale, and stone, this allows for players to slide around on the court and reach for (almost) impossible returns over the net. You will get the gist of sliding around on the court and find yourself returning short (and sneaky) drop shots and smashing them down the line in a winning shot in no time. Versing your family or friends, you’ll find yourself picking up new techniques and finding skills you never knew you possessed. As clay courts are made out of brick, this means that within your rallies, the ball will return over the net at a slow and high rate, meaning that you can have long and easy games with your friends as this type of court is perfect for beginners to try their hand at! Although, if you want to see some professionals in their element on these clay courts, we suggest the impressive ones used for the French Open in Paris.

Synthetic Grass Court If you’ve seen the likes of Federer and Nadal play numerous gripping matches on the famous grass Centre Court throughout the years at London’s Wimbledon and want to experience that type of tennis for yourself, then, by all means, give the grass courts a go. These courts are an in-between medium for those who aren’t new to the sport but haven’t quite grasped the game or honed in on their new skill set just yet. Like clay courts, the ball moves slowly, which is excellent for those beginning as they will have the time to reach it and hit the shot down the line for a winning point. Because these types of courts are covered with polyethylene grass fibres and layered with graded sand, this acts as a foolproof surface for those who may be on the more clumsy side when it comes to sport, limiting any potential injuries that may occur.

Hard Court So, if you’ve tried the fun, enjoyable, and relaxed bat and ball sports similar to that of tennis, as well as the easy-going tennis courts, then perhaps you might like to try the sport on a hard court. If you’re up for a challenge, we suggest heading out onto a hard tennis court to play on next. Have a thrilling match (or a relaxed hit up to get into the swing of things) to test yourself and your abilities. During this fast-paced game, you’ll be amidst the likes of fast rallies, strong serves, and aces. Give topspin your best shot and trick your opponent as it lands in one spot and jumps in a completely different direction. Once you’ve got the gist of the hard courts, you probably won’t want to return to the amateur courts any time soon (trust us). Although, if you want to see some hard courts in action, then head to either the Australian Open at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne or the US Open at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre in New York City that can hold from 14,000 to 23,000 people.
