SPEAK, UP! LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD By Amber Tellis, Consortium Coordinator
The National Healthy Start Association (NHSA) is hosting it’s 15th Annual Spring Conference from March 29th thru April 1st. This year’s theme is ‘The ABC’s of Healthcare Transformation: Advocacy Benefits, Challenges, Sustainability.’ The theme encompasses everything that Healthy Start does across the nation to provide families with the tools they need to build strong community relationships, resources, and healthier families. NHSA is committed in its efforts to promote the development of MCH (Maternal and Child Health) programs and increase awareness to the issues of infant mortality, low birth-weight and disparTo view more event or program information, please visit ities in perinatal health. NHSA members are www.nationalhealthystart.org composed of Healthy Start project directors, maternal and child health professionals, social workers, health care providers, community and outreach workers and other individuals concerned about the well-being of women and children. Each year’s conference provides an opportunity for individuals to advocate on behalf of the Healthy Start Initiative and its benefits in individual communities across the nation. Locally, the St. Petersburg Healthy Start Federal Project mirrors the national efforts through education and advocacy and building community partnerships to provide much needed services. Advocacy is important as it aid people to access resources and information but most importantly it creates change.
MELANOMA/SKIN CANCER PREVENTION & DETECTION MONTH How can Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month make a difference?
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. UV radiation can also come from tanning booths or sunlamps. The most dangerous kind of skin cancer is called melanoma. The good news? Skin cancer can almost always be cured when it’s found and treated early. Communities, health professionals, and families can work together to prevent skin cancer or detect it early on.
We can use the month of May to raise awareness about skin cancer and help people take action to prevent or detect it, both at home and in the larger community. Here are just a few ideas:
Encourage families to adopt good habits together, like wearing sunscreen and limiting their time in the sun.
Motivate teachers and administrators to teach kids about the harm of UV radiation and why it’s important to protect yourself.
Identify youth leaders in your community who can talk to their peers about taking steps to prevent skin cancer.
Partner with a local hospital, state fair, or similar organization to host a skin cancer screening event. Information from The Health Finder (www.healthfinder.gov)

APRIL IS AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH
For more information, please visit http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/facts.html
By Z’kera Sims, Community Health Educator
The CDC defines Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) as a set of developmental disabilities that significantly alter the social, communication, and behavioral state of the individuals affected. ASD is categorized into three primary disorders; they include: Autistic Disorder, Asperger Syndrome, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder. Each year the month of April marks National Autism Awareness month. During this time Autism is given a national platform in which pivotal information about the disorder is shared. Listed below are facts about ASD as well as where more information on ASD can be found:
Autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that generally appears before the age of 3. ASD now affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys. ASD is the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the United States, yet most underfunded.
Boys are nearly five times more likely to have an ASD than girls. There is no medical detection or cure for ASD though with early intervention and treatment symptoms related to autism can be greatly improved. Information from The Center of Disease Control (www.cdc.gov)
Autism greatly varies from person to person (no two people with autism are alike ).
