W O M E N ’ S C O N F E R E N C E : SISTERS WORKING TO ACHIEVE INNER SELF-AWARENESS By Amber Tellis, Consortium Coordinator

On May 18th, 2013 at All Children’s Hospital, the Fourth Annual S.W.A.N.S. event was held. The conference focus encouraged women to take care of themselves. This year’s theme: ‘Celebrating the Health of Women: Physical, Emotional and Financial.’ There were several community vendors, speakers and activities that focuses on women and their needs. Christopher Hood, Hood Chiropractic discussed the importance of physical health, Brian Atkins, Regions Bank shared strategies to become financial healthy and Teresa Przetocki, Healthy Start Federal’s Community Health Educator, facilitated a “Mindfully Managing” stress activity utilizing ceramic tile squares and your own creativity. Other activities included” demonstration on how to correctly apply eye make-up and go from a day to evening look and a photo booth for participants to capture their experience at the conference. It was a great event to provide useful education and celebrate women!

We would like to thank our vendors!

FIREWORK SAFETY MONTH Parades, outdoor grilling, flag waving, and spectacular fireworks displays make every July 4th

celebration memorable. However, misusing consumer fireworks can turn a celebration into

a painful memory when an accident occurs. Every year, thousands of firework-related injuries are treated in hospital emergency rooms across the country. To make matters worse, many of those rushed to the emergency room are children, as the risk of fireworks injury is highest

Red, White and You: Stay Safe This 4th of July by Practicing Fireworks Safety

among kids aged 5-19 and adults 25-44. Fireworks, if used improperly, can result in injury to the eyes of a child or adult as well as varying degrees of burns on the skin. This 4th of July, take safe and simple steps before, during and after using consumer fireworks to keep you, your family and pets healthy, and your celebration safe.

SUMMER FUN & SAFETY

By Teresa Przetocki, Community Health Educator Summer is here and the weather is HOT! A great way to cool-off is to enjoy what our great Sunshine State has to offer – many beaches and pools. However, these water venues also offer opportunities for children to drown. SNAPSHOT of FLORIDA: • Drowning is the leading cause of death among children ages 1-4 in Florida. • Florida’s drowning death rate among children ages 1-4 is the highest in the nation. • Enough children drown each year in Florida to fill three to four preschool classrooms. • In 2009, 485 Florida residents drowned. There were an additional 388 hospitalizations for non-fatal drownings. Children ages 1 -4 made up 13% of the deaths and 43% of the hospitalizations.

How can we keep our families safe and prepared during the summer months? • Enroll your child/family members in swim lessons (information found at your local city recreation centers) • Visit FloridaSafePools.com and get a FREE In-Home Safety Check and qualify for a FREE door alarm. Her passion to assist those who need help in the community reaches farther than C.R.E.E.D as you can also find her volunteering at The Next STEPP’s Pregnancy Center and after the tragedy of 9/11, she began baking treats for a local fire house on the anniversary each year. Thank you Yolanda for all you do to make a difference in our community!
