By Kimberly Brown-Williams, Community Services Supervisor The Raising your MENtality Men’s Group (comprised of cased managed men from the St. Petersburg Healthy Start Federal Project (HSFP) and the Healthy Families programs participated in their 1st annual Grill Off! On Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Campbell’s Park, the air was filled with a scent like none other. The men began early eager to showcase the best burger and chicken, each wanted the crown of “Grillmaster”! Seven individuals accepted the challenge and the boasting began very early in the game. It was clear, each participant wanted to win.
Winners Circle: Calvin Williams, Joe Jackson, and Ken Holloway
The judges were local business owner, Joe from Joe’s Barbeque and a case manager, (associated with HSFP), Sharon known for her culinary skills. The judges had a hard task to select the “best burger and best chicken, in the end they finally made a decision after much deliberation. Joe won for best burger and Mr. Calvin and Mr. Ken tied for best chicken. Golden spatulas/forks and chef hats were awarded to the winners along with the bragging rights of ‘Grill Master” until next year’s cook-off! The event was a great success and many have already begun to discuss who will win next year. Overall, the men enjoyed themselves and it was a great way to honor and encourage them.
MMmmmm MMmmmm Good!

MAKE SAFE TOYS AND GIFTS APART OF YOUR HOLIDAYS Information from Prevent Blindness America (preventblindness.org) Thanks to online sales and some retailers starting the holiday shopping season earlier every year, many giftgivers have already begun to purchase items to get a jump-start on their lists. But sometimes, the best deal may not be the safest. Prevent Blindness America, the nation’s oldest non-profit eye health and safety group, wants everyone to make sure that all gifts purchased, especially for children, are safe. In 2010, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimated that hospital emergency rooms across the country treated 251,700 toy-related injuries. And, 72 percent of those injuries were to those under the age of 15. “In order to spend the holidays with family and friends, instead of in the emergency room, we must be diligent in making sure our children are protected,” said Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness America. “We all need to make a conscious effort to think about the gifts we are buying to make sure they are appropriate for every child’s age and development level.” Prevent Blindness America has declared December as Safe Toys and Gifts Month in an effort to help adults make the best decisions on how to keep the holiday season joyful for everyone. WORLD AIDS DAY Article by Shavon Gibson, Health Educator
December 1st is nationally recognized as World AIDS Day. This day gives the opportunity for many people to support those in their community or life who have been affected by AIDS. World AIDS Day is designed to improve and advance the knowledge of those who participate in the events held within their community. It also aids to diminish social prejudices about AIDS and those who may be affected by this illness. The city of St. Petersburg acknowledges World AIDS Day every year at Williams Park, located on 4th Street and 2nd Ave. N. This health fair event provides the community with prevention education and resources for local services. There is also HIV and Hepatitis testing available, as well as flu shots and general health screenings. This event will be Friday, November 29th from 11am-4pm. With so much hustle and bustle going on, from traveling to preparing the house for guest, one could easily forget about the importance of their own health or receiving health education. So this December please be sure to spread the word and support the cause. Educating yourself and others is the best gift that anyone could receive. Until next time, stay healthy!!
