Next CREED Meeting: November 11, 2013 Monday @ 6:00 pm All Children’s Education & Conference Center, 701 4th Street South, St.Petersburg, FL 33701

September is National Infant Mortality (IM) Awareness Month. In recognition of this month, the St. Petersburg Healthy Start Federal Project hosted their 4th annual IM walk on Saturday, September 21st at Dell Holmes Park. The walk is an opportunity to increase awareness of infant mortality and the factors that contribute to infant deaths, pre-term births and low-birth weight babies in Pinellas County. This annual walk is an important event to draw attention to local efforts to reduce infant mortality (the death of an infant before age one). Many came out to walk the walk while enjoying a beautiful day in the park. It was clear that each participant had in mind to walk one step at a time, to help our babies thrive! HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS

Know the dangers of holiday decorations:

Get responsible at get-togethers:

Be on the lookout when shopping:

It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays. You’ve got parties, decorations and shopping on your mind—but that’s all the more reason to be aware and keep alert of any potential dangers. Use these expert tips and precautions as a guideline and spread the spirit of safety this holiday season:

The National Fire Protection Association recommends that if you’re going with a live tree, get it fresh. An old tree with dry needles is a fire hazard. And if it’s an artificial tree, make sure it’s fireretardant. Make sure to check all string lights and don’t overload your electrical outlets.

Whether you’ve got people over or you’re out and about visiting others, the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly advises to make sure children are always supervised. If the place you’re visiting isn’t childproofed, be aware of the potential danger spots and watch the children closely.

Try to shop in pairs. Avoid parking the car in dark, isolated areas. Be suspicious of strangers that come up to you for no reason. They may be trying to distract you in order to take your purse, packages or other belongings. Make purchases with a check or credit card, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS By Teresa Przetocki, Community Health Educator

Happy Halloween! It’s almost time to get dressed up and celebrate in the festivities of All Hallows’ Eve. To stay safe while still having fun this holiday season, here are some tips to remember: 1.

Walking in groups or with a trusted adult is a great way to trick-or-treat with people and not alone.

2.

Put reflective tape on your costumes and bags to help drivers see you, as well as carry a flashlight for other trick-or-treaters to know where you are in the evening to night.

3.

Try to use crosswalks, sidewalks, or stay as close as you can to the curb while walking and crossing streets. Remember to always look both ways before crossing a street and to walk not run.

4.

Scary masks and costumes are fun – just remember to have them fit comfortably so you can still see and move around without having your vision impaired and to prevent falls.

5.

If wearing make-up, test in a small area first, and always remove ALL makeup before going to bed.

6.

Only eat non-tampered candy – if the wrapper looks suspicious, throw it away. Also, avoid eating any homemade treats given to you by strangers.

7.

Only visit houses that are well-lit, and keep away from candles or open flames – make sure your costume is flame-resistant.

8.

Never enter a home or accept a ride from strangers.

We hope you have a fun evening and gets lots of treats without the tricks!
