Community canvassing is an effective way to build support around important issues and raise community awareness. According to Kevin B. Chavous (Hit the ground Running) the benefits of grassroots efforts include: Potential Membership with your organization and reaching new members who may be difficult to engage through traditional methods, Public Education providing face-to-face conversations and information to individuals encountered and Raising Awareness informing concerned citizens on issues happening in their community and expanding the reach by activating people in targeted locations. The members of C.R.E.E.D are passionate about infant mortality and issues that surround a family prior to, during and after a pregnancy. They understand how vital it is to get out and spread the word, educate and recruit others. It begins with us, but it does not have to end there. You can: Get Involved! Have your Say! Make a Difference!
C.R.E.E.D members along with Staff geared up for a canvassing session.
C.R.E.E.D. members visit community members in front of a local business on 16th Street South.
As a community, we can come together and help to improve ourselves, families and neighborhoods. C.R.E.E.D. works with the St. Petersburg Healthy Start Federal Project in efforts to assist in the reduction of infant mortality and low birth weight and pre-term infants for families in south St. Petersburg.
IF NOT US, THEN WHO? C.R.E.E.D. Often, people think they can not make a difference because they are just one person, but that is just not true. Everyone can make a difference in their own way! Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was just one person but he spoke out against injustice and helped change segregation. Susan B. Anthony was only one person but she spearheaded the
women’s suffrage movement to ensure that women have the right to vote. One person can change things and that person is you! Join C.R.E.E.D. to help make a change and make your mark in history starting in your community. ~From the Desk of Amber Tellis

SPOTLIGHT: NEW BEGINNINGS with the ST. PETERSBURG HEALTHY START FEDERAL PROJECT CASE MANAGEMENT TEAM Article and photos by Kimberly BrownBrown-Williams
Case management services have been around for a long time. While there are many models used to provide case management (CM) services, the team from New Beginnings with the St. Petersburg Healthy Start Federal Project (Project) rely on the multidisciplinary approach to offer the most effective services. The CM team is comprised of five case managers who work to ensure that women focus on themselves prior to pregnancy so they are at their optimum health before getting pregnant. They also work with high-risk pregnant women by providing support for the best possible birth outcome. The CM team includes a male intervention specialist whose primary role is to work with men and tailor services around their individual needs. Additional resources that the CM team have access to include a nurse, health educator, outreach specialist and social workers who bring their knowledge and expertise to the case management process and provide wrap around services if needed. Kimberly Brown-Williams, Community Services Supervisor stated, “It takes a special kind of person to provide case management services.” According to one of the programs participants, Merinda, her case worker Sharon is very encouraging and inspires her to do better. Within the program clients are afforded the opportunity to have their medical, physical and psychosocial needs evaluated and addressed. The CM team members are not only advocates for their clients but teach these skills to assist in the process of self-sufficiency. Even upon case closure, the CM team coordinates community support systems and services for continued successful outcomes. C.R.E.E.D. salutes the Case Management team for a job well done!
