ED IT O R ’S NO TE When you hear the words ‘textile art’, what comes to mind? Items like quilts, embroidery, rugs, or tapestries? Although these are indeed examples of textile art, some artists have moved away from the usual flat surfaces and home furnishings into new directions, creating textile artwork that fills rooms, suspends from ceilings or walls, and towers over viewers. These artists are creating 3D textile art using fibers like cotton, wool, hemp, silk or even synthetics like polyester and nylon. Some of these pieces of artwork extend out into space, away from a wall or up from the floor. This type of art is becoming ever more popular, and so in this edition, we explore the work of a few artists that have created some intriguing pieces of 3D textile art. At 1340Art, we strive to continue bringing you progressive styles, techniques and creativity, so you can always keep abreast of the latest trends!
We’re lucky to have many of the best emerging artists from all over the world as our contributors. If we’re a platform for showcasing innovative artists, their ideas and exhibitions, it’s thanks to them. We’re very grateful to those in the art world who’ve supported us thus far, and we hope to keep inspiring the art community. This magazine is our commitment to sustaining that community, consistently developing ways to provide international exposure for upcoming artists. Thanks to everyone who has helped us grow to this point and we hope you will continue with us through each edition in our endeavours to bring art to the world!

VAN DER HORST As a photographer, I like to show the beautiful and extraordinary things in life because we are so often shown the ugly and bad. To emphasize the mood in my picturesque and sometimes surreal world, I use a painterly look with (mostly) warm and desaturated colors. By using several manipulated versions of the image in different layers and adding layers of photographed patterns to it, I compose a less ‘clean’ and sharp digital image that helps setting the mood I like to create. With my work, I hope to show others a minute of beauty and peace in this hectic and violent modern world. Sweetest Thing (Top) Pipe Dream (Bottom) Photographic Composit - 50 x 50 cm

“Broken pieces belong to my work. They are coming to the surface, wanting to be looked at deeply. My desire is to connect. By tying together the many layers of marks and paint on a canvas, by re-arranging broken plates and tiles, by gluing ripped up paintings into a colourful flower I tell a new story. This reminds us to embrace the rift and find ways to bring together even the most antagonist elements - inside and in the world - to a surprising new whole. Car ved (Left) Acrylic on Paper - 55.9 x 76.2 cm

“I am caressing my fiber creatures. While doing this I noticed how the still material can express directionality or movement just by touching/moving the threads. These pieces represent different types of movement. I am capturing how the wind blows, the water leaks, the rust spreads or the sea waves... They are still and moving at the very same time.

“My love for calligraphy and the making of marks, both planned and accidental, has profoundly contributed through several series in drawing, painting, and sculpture where invented calligraphic forms are in evidence. I have always been interested in ritual, ceremony, mystery and magic pertaining to invented imagery and secret “messages”. In this series entitled “Ancient Walls,” I expose the hint of cultural existence that is perhaps “undiscovered”. Forms and symbols are used with the intent to give clues to human interaction not yet deciphered.” Ancient Walls #7 (Left) Ancient Walls #27 (Right) Acrylic on Paper - 30.5 x 40.6 cm each

Tin Tam™ (Right) Tin Cans, Steel & UV Ink - 120 x 120 x 4 cm
Early development comprised experimentation with abstract metal shapes but it wasn’t long before the ‘association with title’ became a prime concept-driving technique. The incorporation of puns, metaphors and word puzzles used so commonly by newspapers, comedians and advertisers reflect much of the artist’s childhood interest in cartooning, humour, and the association of images with words in his professional career in advertising and design. A laser-etched title on a steel nameplate discloses something of the artist’s inspiration and the idea contained within the artwork. Nonetheless, the prime function remains that the artwork needs only to stand alone as ‘aesthetic design’ and no communicated association or meaning is necessary to justify its existence.

“My work of drawing on canvas is an exploration of process, rules-based art. This procedure is comprised of a formula of specific actions based upon a variable circumstance and can be rooted in computer based algorithmic if...then statements. These procedural mandates are instituted from the beginning of a work and continue through its completion.

INTERNATIONAL CHILD ART
FOUNDATION Creativity and empathy are key attributes of successful learners and leaders. Creativity fuels discovery, originality and invention while empathy brings mutuality, compromise and collaborative innovation. The development of creativity and empathy is thus a precondition for prosperity and peace.
This development must start early because of the right of the child to be creative and empathetic—free from the pervasive “4thgrade slump” in creativity and sectarian tensions that muddy their “mirror neurons” responsible for empathy. The arts can foster creativity and empathy since both are rooted in the arts—children’s universal language. Here at ICAF we plant the seeds of freedom by fostering critical creative thinking and developing mutual empathy. We serve American children as their national arts organization and their peers worldwide as the international arts organization. Our national or global programs and world festivals are free-of-charge and our ChildArt magazine is free of commercial advertisements.
