ED IT O R ’S NO TE The “art world” is a tricky phrase, but under it’s far reaching umbrella, it’s the rich multiplicity of visions and voices that comprise it. We believe all the artists who have participated in our magazine editions to date, have contributed to this expanding theme. Thanks to all the artists who applied this quarter and who gave us so many varying artworks to consider. We are thrilled to yet again produce a new edition in which we feature several contributors to this multifaceted exploration of sensory engagement. So many of these outstanding artists create work that transform every day objects into monuments of wonder. While art is visual and physical, through the vast array of pieces designed, we are able to delve
deep into human thought, how we perceive the world–with all its panoply of stuff–around us. Using colour and texture to rouse and beckon body, brain and eye, we are able to experience what could be considered a guilty pleasure in today’s contemporary art world, in which theory is increasingly given primacy over the physical and experiential aspects of engaging with art. This considered, we are sure you will take as much pleasure in the absorbing works of art in this edition as we did.

“I am fascinated by human relationships, strengths, survival power in the everlasting changeable and often surprising human life. In addition to humans, nature and music are a constant source of inspiration. The light, the sounds, the moods, the colors, shapes, small details and beautiful views. I take many photos that directly or most often indirectly inspire me with a mood or idea for an image. Most often, the images reflect the optimism that I experience is found in most people, even when difficulties in times try to block the view.”

KRANTZ “I think of my work as organic-psychedelia.They are familiar representations of ecology, but not quite of this world. I’m drawn to the universality of patterns found in nature. From the micro to the macro, or the way a coral reef in northern Queensland harbours the same organic patterns as fungi in the alpine tundra in Tasmania. It results in an extrapolation of imaginings of what could lie beyond our knowledge, in interplanetary or inter-dimensional worlds, or the less frequently visited known worlds such as that of moss, fungi and entomology; places of bonsai-ed beauty that play with our scale perception, and evoke a sense of nostalgic fantasy.” Moreton Bay Fig Bonsai (Top) Acrylic - 120 x 150 cm

“Finding inspiration for work isn’t always easy and seeking a meaningful daily practice can be challenging in the midst juggling the demands of family life. Like many people, my world consists of a lot of taking/picking up kids, running errands, going to the grocery store, watching kids at a sporting event, etc.-not terribly glamorous. But I began to take notice of things as I was making my way from point A to point B-small moments-a dock on the lake, decaying structures with a fragment of beautiful color or graffiti or a quirky house-things I would catch in my peripheral vision. I began to bring my camera with me every day to photograph these snippets of urban life that caught my eye-often times it was a something that I had passed many times before, but the difference being that I was now paying close attention to the mundane and finding inspiration.”

WAYN E
FISHER “The best part of what I do is to create photographs that I am proud of, defining a subject and portraying it to the best of my ability. I believe I have been given the gift of being able to see images and visualize the end result. My eye is constantly searching for images looking for patterns, textures and how the light is effecting the subject. I visit the subject and admire and respect its beauty, then I dissect it looking at every possible angle to portray it at its best. I fall in love easily with my subjects and have a feeling of attachment and leave with a lonely feeling of detachment. I am happy when I feel I have depicted it at its best, and sad when I have failed and this failure brings me back to the subject and the challenge of creating the image that I set out to do and proud of. Metamorphosis (Top) Photography - 58 x 42 cm

“My work explores the dichotomy between unusual juxtaposed materials and the intriguing object. I have always been fascinated by the many different making processes and techniques within jewellery and sculpture creation. The methodologies within my own concepts are often experimental, challenging and most of all, thought provoking. My work doesn’t always conform or adhere to the rules.”

MAD ABOUT ART
MADaboutART was founded in 2001 to
fight HIV using art and education. Pioneered in South Africa, its award-winning curriculum for children and youth uses art as the platform to ignite imagination, have fun and achieve social change. Many young people living in poverty around the world experience anger and low self-esteem; becoming trapped in a spiral of vulnerability that destroys hope. The burden of HIV potentiates emotional trauma and isolation. MADaboutART’s programme combines validated narrative therapy and psycho-social techniques to change lives by inspiring positive life choices and celebrating diversity. Independent evaluation showed a significant positive impact on well-being.
