Last year we experienced a lot of growth in the 1340Art world, and we are incredibly proud of the effort our ever expanding team, and our wonderful featured artists have put into their work for each edition, as well as for the 1340Gallery. We would like to also take this opportunity to thank our 1340Foundation for all the donations made to provide support to the various art-related charities through the year. The growth in our readership has been exponential, and we would like to thank our readers, all lovers of art, all around the world, for their valued support. We promise this year will be an even more exciting, exhilarating one! So we invite you to stay for the ride and enjoy the journey with us, as we continue to break barriers in the art world.
I thought it would be great to start the year off with a bang, and therefore decided we would focus greater attention on installation artwork and sculptures; selecting more of this style of work for our Q1 2019 edition. The focus on how the viewer experiences the work, and the desire to provide an intense experience for them, is a dominant theme in installation art. Although in this issue we’re only bringing it to you on the printed page, we imagine you will still indulge your senses, and delve deeply into the experience and quality of each piece chosen. We hope to bring it to life for you all, ensuring our readers enjoy viewing it as much as we have had the privilege to.

Mariaan’s work is situated in ‘Object Oriented Philosophy’- Looking for the’ Soul of the Thing’. It questions human dominance, which forms a direct contrast in the way we consider objects. It proposes an alternative perception where we would admit that ‘Things’ are more than we perceive them to be. Themes in her work include power relationships, the meaning of dominance, and the idea of being human in a world filling up with non-human intellectual entities. Is it possible to join creative forces with ‘Things’ like AI (Artificial Intelligence), or will we continue to think about ‘us’ and ‘them’?

JILLETT As an emerging artist, Jillett’s work responds to the unique global positioning of the Far North Queensland region in Australia. Influenced by the weaving techniques of indigenous people from this area, her work incorporates natural materials alongside thigh-spun yarn and recycled fabrics. Combining coiled basketry construction with textile techniques, the works present as sculptural items referencing the coastal landscape of the region. Jillett credits Maryanne Tokome for her knowledge in Bilum making that has strongly influenced the development of this weaving technique. The sculptures of the series “Perpetual Motion� evoke the concept of the continuous development of man and the evolution of humanity. The dynamic force animates a man and ensures his vital energy. Just like our molecular system, in its heart the assembly of atoms constituting a molecule is never stable, always changing, transforming like our body, which changes perpetually, day after day.

Skuse lives and works in the Gold Coast Hinterland of Queensland and draws inspiration from the sub-tropical rainforests of the area. Her current series of work brings together a diverse range of influences including Asian philosophy and traditional art, textile pattern, bird-watching and the phenomenology of perception. Susan’s paintings work with layers of color and pattern combined with realistic depictions of Australian birds. The work goes through four processes (at least) Firstly, Skuse creates an abstract color background using vibrant lithographic inks with solvent to create fluid organic effects.Then Skuse works with her ever growing library of custom made stencils - sometimes plant forms, sometimes abstract or classical patterns. Susan then sits back and considers what bird subject it suggests. The final stage is to re-balance the work tonally so that the subjects sit happily with the background.

Ale Rambar is a Costa Rican artist who’s work is based on the themes of gender, tolerance, respect among us and respect for the planet. These themes are represented by analyzing human bodies topographically, just like a topographer would study mountains, valleys or rivers. For its realization Rambar developed a style that is based on three-dimensional compositions made with layers of paper. Each piece is cut separately, layer by layer and then assembled by hand to create “human topographies�. This is a technique in which the three-dimensionality of the figure, the nature of the material, and its shading under the light, are the elements that give life to each one of the pieces. The use of paper is due to the fragility of the material, which contrasts with the theme of the pieces.

L E R OY The Alchemy series is an ongoing collaboration between photographer Michel Leroy and a wide range of professional athletes with varying body types that explores the tension between physicality and identity. The images are simple in form, but rich in ideas and emotions. Each moment captured is a celebration of athletic confidence and vitality at its most pure. Moments of sculptural balance, anticipation and strength define the graceful lines and organic gestures of these vivid Black and White images.
In this figurative series the artist creates body-positive images that are exaggerated and explicit without sexual objectification. By emphasizing form over identity, Leroy seduces the viewer to reveal empathy for body acceptance that transcends the self-image obsession of social media. Mario Molins Roger grew up in the field, in direct contact with Nature. Roger found something special and mystical in it, creating a deep love, respect, and feeling of protection towards her. Roger creates “sprout� sculptures that have the tree and wood as protagonists. Roger seeks to create natural poetics through wood. They report the years of more rain or drought, or the territory where the tree lived. Roger lets it speak to discover a whole world.

Through art Schäfer seeks telling the ‘untold’, the things we don’t like to talk about, the stories that never happened (or never will have), the atmosphere of a moment lost somewhere in time. Schäfer dares you to think outside the box: To capture the beauty of a horrible scene or the unsettling morbid creeping into your field of vision of a beautiful moment (or at least you thought it was nice, didn’t you?). Somewhere between these two poles life is swaying and a dream can easily turn into a nightmare and vice versa. Art is Schäfer’s way to give a form to these disembodied demons and disarm them.

ICAF Creativity and empathy are key attributes of successful learners and leaders. Creativity fuels discovery, originality and invention while empathy brings mutuality, compromise and collaborative innovation. The development of creativity and empathy is thus a precondition for prosperity and peace.
This development must start early because of the right of the child to be creative and empathetic—free from the pervasive “4thgrade slump” in creativity and sectarian tensions that muddy their “mirror neurons” responsible for empathy. The arts can foster creativity and empathy since both are rooted in the arts—children’s universal language. Here at ICAF we plant the seeds of freedom by fostering critical creative thinking and developing mutual empathy. We serve American children as their national arts organization and their peers worldwide as the international arts organization. Our national or global programs and world festivals are free-of-charge and our ChildArt magazine is free of commercial advertisements.
