EDIT OR’ S NOTE As with any art form, especially however, with visual art, there are many ways an artist can make a piece of work come to life. Design, composition or texture is one way. Capturing light and shadow is another way; the careful combination of hard and soft edges is yet another. Colour is certainly high up on the list of ways too. In this edition we explore a few of these different art forms, and hope you admire the various techniques used to bring the works to life - even through the printed page.

Whether photography, contemporary, or installation, being hooked on art in is something insatiable, and we are once again thrilled to bring you a display of unique works by some brilliant upcoming artists. This is at the very heart of what we do and why we do it. So, savour it with us, soak it all up, and feel the emotion portrayed in the selected artworks this issue.

Piper deals with the fascinating world of microscope photography and analog photography. What complexity, what uniqueness, what beauty resides in the seemingly most trivial objects! Plants, liquids, crystals and microorganisms: Viewed from the right perspective, greatly enlarged, you can see the visual treasures that we encounter every day without perceiving them. Piper’s home on the Baltic Sea has always provided her with inexhaustible material and inspiration.

MODEEN Modeen’s Wrap-Rings Collection is a series of rings that are all wrapped in different quotidian materials. All the pieces include a fragrance, which is either released by the wrap-material itself or through something stored within/by the artifact. The fragrance is released when the film/surface is pierced/punctured to enable wear. Many of the materials used are temporary, fragile, and will need to be reapplied on a regular basis. Consequently they all also, inevitably, involve a ritual in their use and application. Seaweed-a-Wrap Ring (Left) 3D Printed Bronze & Seaweed - 70 x 50 x 15 mm

‘The other side of San Diego’ is about capturing the lifestyles within the communities of gentrification, gangs, drugs, and homeless lifestyles inside the margins of South and South East San Diego, where these lifestyle influence dread and consume the lives, and communities here. Valencia’s vision is to bring awareness, inspire and tell the stories about these people really living those lifestyles, and for many of them to be heard because some of these persons inside my captures are no longer alive or are incarcerated. “My brush is my sword. I extract my fears, demons, and my rage against the social injustice. I put my anger, gratitude, love and wonder for life together, I mix them, and shout visually. I use a diverse array of media, constantly evolving: painting, installation, sculpture, collages, sketchbooks and video, paper, canvas, cloth, tears, dolls, Louis Vuitton bags, clay, barbed wire, old 18th century missal, maps, furniture, whatever I find that can express the non intelligible.”

MAD ABOUT ART

MADaboutART was founded in 2001 to

fight HIV using art and education. Pioneered in South Africa, its award-winning curriculum for children and youth uses art as the platform to ignite imagination, have fun and achieve social change. Many young people living in poverty around the world experience anger and low self-esteem; becoming trapped in a spiral of vulnerability that destroys hope. The burden of HIV potentiates emotional trauma and isolation. MADaboutART’s programme combines validated narrative therapy and psycho-social techniques to change lives by inspiring positive life choices and celebrating diversity. Independent evaluation showed a significant positive impact on well-being.
