INTRO DUCTION

The graduation project was a process of questioning myself, I kept going back to my design preferences as being related to my childhood and I continued to focus on storytelling, narrative and sense of place in architecture. I always positioning myself between storyteller and architect. I like to dream but not only. That’s why I want to catch something between reality and dream.

In China, there still a lot of cities are still in the mid-industrialisation stage. The characteristic is that industrial land is concentrated in the city center and urbanization has not kept up with the process of industrialization, resulting in the urban landscape is still a mixture of ruralization and industrialisation, thus forming a unique urban style.
CONTEXT
02
Since I was a child, huge electricity plants have been located in the heart of the city and people have been used to finding traces of industry in all parts of the city.

Although this does not mean that people accept the pollutions, but these industrial buildings do affect the urban landscape. Compared to the people in other cities, our city memories have been caught in the conflict between industrial buildings and rural life, creating a unique memory.

About Water Guixi is a city that was built by the water, with the Xinjiang River running through the city, and people have a unique attachment to this river. This river has supported many families. From the early ages, people used to fish on the river, and the river was surrounded by farmland, which was cultivated and irrigated by the water.

About Bridge
Place Attachment
before the HuiGuan Bridge was built, there was only one floating bridge. From then, the people on both sides of the river began to communicate more closely, with many people crossing the bridge every day to sell vegetables or to go out of town on business. Gradually markets were formed around the bridge in which people often exchanged goods and sold vegetables.Young people used to swimming and dating by the bridge. As a result, there are many happy memories about the bridge in people's minds, and the bridge gradually became the most important part in our life.
HuiGuan Bridge 12
The bridge is also very important to the people of Guixi, which carries significant social properties. The bridge was not just a place for crossing, but a place for people to meet and socialize:

The HuiGuan bridge was originally built for the Guixi electricity plant as a functional bridge for the transport of materials and the disposal of waste materials.
City Side
The pipelines on the right are called the water pipe used for the transport of tap water from the XiangShan mountain reservoir to the electricity plant, while the pipelines on the left are called the ash pipes used for the transport of the nonrecyclable wastewater from the electricity plant to the XiangShan mountain for burial and disposal.

Changes in the Riverbanks
Place Attachment
The bridge began to become the link between these two landscapes, connecting modern life and our childhood memories in rural life.
HuiGuan Bridge 16
Gradually, the two riverbanks began to develop in a completely different way, with the northern side becoming more urbanized, while the southern side still retains its typical rural landscape.

When we were children..... we always crossed the HuiGuan bridge to swim under the bridge in the summer, and parents would take us to walk on the pipeline and say: "you need to practice walking on the pipe to show respect for this bridge".
Childhood Memory
HuiGuan Bridge 26
Sometimes my grandparents carried me up the pipe to play, with drinks, they would lead me along, telling me stories about the Bridge, the River, and the city.
Spatial Design
Interview
When we were teenagers..... we always walk and chat with classmates on the bridge after school. At that time there were many people drying their quilts on the bridge, so we used to hide behind quilts and play hide-and-seek game with friends.
Childhood Memory
HuiGuan Bridge 28
The most fun there was finding drawings or notes on the pipelines by other teenagers which shows their moods ,wished and gossip. of course, we write as well.
Spatial Design
Interview
When we were adults..... We would often go to the bridge with friends in the summertime to blow the wind and look at the river view. The pipelines were cool because it carries water, so we always lay on them and look at the stars, talking about our dreams or worries.
Childhood Memory
HuiGuan Bridge 30
At night, so many people would choose dating on the bridge because there were no lights on it.

How to transform the HuiGuan Bridge to fit the modern life of the people in GuiXi city and recall the memory properties it carries?
INTER VENTION
03
Although the location and scale of the project is closely related to urban planning. However,I am more concentrate on the spatial potential of the site itself and how it can be designed from a spatial perspective.
