73 Practical information

Welcome to Lolland-Falster! There is plenty of open space here, with room to relax, enjoy the countryside and hear the birds sing. But if you are looking for something exciting, we have lots going on and interesting places to visit. We have talked to one of the families who came for a holiday on Lolland-Falster in 2016. Mark and Maria Petersen from Copenhagen spent two weeks with their children in a summer cottage on Lolland. They just wanted to relax on the beach and see interesting places. “We decided it was time to try Lolland-Falster. We had spent a weekend with another couple in a summer cottage on Falster, and we wanted to look round and see more,” said Mark and Maria. They soon noticed that the locals call the area the ‘South Sea Islands’. “I thought it was a very good description. The islands are in the south, with wonderful countryside and fantastic beaches, and the people are very welcoming. We began to call them the ‘South Sea Islands’ ourselves,” smiled Maria. “It couldn’t be more relaxing when the children can play happily for hours on the beach with the sand and in the water. Back at the cottage, they enjoyed themselves out in the garden. It was simply great!” The family also went on a lot of outings, Mark added. “We went to Knuthenborg and the Mediaeval Centre, you shouldn’t miss them. We visited Knuthenlund, where the children watched the animals and the grown ups chose a good cheese to eat later. We had another good day canoeing, and we just landed when we felt like it.” “We decided one day to take the little ferry to Fejø, to see the island. When we got to the ferry landing point, we decided to buy an island pass, so we could visit Femø and Askø as well. It was great fun exploring, and we bought some local apple juice and salami.” The family had two lovely weeks, and it won’t be the last time they visit Lolland-Falster.

Holiday idyll at Hesnæs

Get into a real holiday mood on miles of sandy beach at Ulslev Strand along the east coast of Falster. It is close to Ulslev Strand Camping and a summer-cottage area, and has fine parking facilities. Great for children, with shallow water and a play area, campfire site, tables and benches etc.

It is easy to see why the broad white beach at Marielyst is repeatedly voted one of the best in Denmark. It is perfect for bathing - with a life-guard tower, big summer cottage area, lots of activities and places to eat: it has something for everyone. Not far away, south of Marielyst, is the naturist area at Bøtø.

Hestehoved Strand near Nakskov has Denmark’s warmest bathing waters. Children love the calm water and sandy beach in lovely natural surroundings off Nakskov Fjord and close to a campsite. It is also close to the yachting harbour, with good places to eat or play volleyball and crazy golf.

A lovely beach for children along the 6-kilometre spit of land on the south coast of Lolland. Explore the salt marsh right at the tip – With the Langeland Belt on one side and Nakskov Fjord on the other. The water is fine for surfing, and there is also a naturist area. Good parking and shopping at the nearby campsite.

The lovely beach at Bandholm was new in 2016, but it is only a few yards away from the jetties and flumes at Denmark’s oldest swimming facilities. The beach is part of a coastal park with benches, and is perfect for a break after a visit to Knuthenborg Safari Park, which is just close by. Try a Bandholmer from the ice cream stall if you want a special treat.

In the old fishing harbour at Hesnæs on the east coast of Falster, fishing boats bob in the water, while the old beech trees stretch slender branches over the sea. There are lovely sandy beaches on both sides of the harbour, and lots of beautiful woodland walks will give you an appetite for a meal at Pomlenakke, or you can pack a picnic and have a great day with the family by the sea.

HOLIDAY PARADISE WITH LOTS GOING ON

Marielyst Marielyst on Falster is a highly popular holiday area, with more than 6000 summer cottages, a glorious beach and plenty of action on the square. A SUMMER COTTAGE, PERHAPS? FOR CHILDREN, WATER SPORT LOVERS AND GOLFERS

There are summer cottages as far as you can see along the beach, so there is every chance of finding one to suit you, whether you prefer a small, simple cottage or are looking for a pool and rooms for several families. There are also camping sites, bed & breakfast and hotels near Marielyst.

Altogether, there are 20 kilometres of fine, white sandy beaches on the east coast of Falster. Marienlyst is patrolled by lifeguards in summer, and has been voted Denmark’s best beach. If the children don’t feel like beach games and sand, there is a big playground by the square. Older children can have fun playing bowls, football golf, or crazy golf, or try paintballing and rides on go-karts. Serious golfers should not miss Marielyst Golf Club.

> >

> Denmark’s biggest wooden deck

The square in Marielyst is covered with 4500 m2 of oak planks, so it is the biggest wooden deck in Denmark. There is a great southern atmosphere with live music most days, and the restaurants and bars serve food and drinks outdoors. There are restaurants and night life to suit every taste in the area, whether you like traditional Danish meals, or prefer Italian food, pizza, tapas, a buffet or the chef’s tender steaks.

FUN FOR EVERYONE

Knuthenborg saFARIPARK

#visitlollandfalster

WILD ADVENTURE A whole day goes quickly at Knuthenborg Safari Park, first seeing all the exotic animals close up, then letting the children loose in Limpopoland. This fabulous safari park is unlike other zoos: you get right close to so many animals. On the savanna you ride among all the great African animals: giraffes, zebra, rhinoceros, gnus, antelopes and ostriches. In other places you see the odd-looking emus, fascinating wolves and inquisitive llamas. You can even drive a car through the tigers’ forest. You have to keep the windows shut, but it is exciting to get so close to the sleepy tigers. If you want to go even nearer to the animals, you can ride on the monkey bus with monkeys literally hanging in front of the windows, and in the lemur forest you are often less than a metre from the charming lemurs. You can stroke the tame goats, ponies and camels in the park.

SEASON TICKETS Can’t get enough of Knuthenborg? Don’t worry, you can buy a season ticket for a whole year.

When you have soaked up all these impressions, the children can let off steam in Limpopoland, Knuthenborg’s free adventure park. They can have fun in the giant sandpit, or in the water playground, or the biggest nature playground in Denmark. Try climbing Kilimanjaro, a copy of the biggest mountain in Africa, and sliding down again. If you are very brave, the Congo Splash is the steepest flume in Europe, and you get butterflies in your stomach as you swoosh down 16 metres and land with a huge splash.

HOLIDAYS WITH WATER OR A VISIT TO THE MIDDLE AGES Get right into the Middle Ages one day, and dive head-first into giant waves the next. Something exciting for all the family.

GET REALLY WET IF YOU LIKE WATER GAMES

>

BACK TO THE MIDDLE AGES

You don’t need to travel further south than Rødby to find a tropical atmosphere and water at 30 degrees. The sun shines all year at Lalandia’s Aquadrome, so you can splash about for hours in the water. Can you keep your balance in the wave pool? Or you can swirl at top speed through one of the huge water flumes. Then you can sweat it out between water games in Monky Tonky Land, the great indoor playground. The climbing jungle rises through several storeys, and you can always take the slide down. There is a choice of restaurants for a meal, and then you can always take a nap or just take a break in a beach chair.

Not far from the centre of Nykøbing Falster, you can step straight into the Middle Ages. Cross the bridge over Guldborgsund and enter the mediaeval town of Sundkøbing. Suddenly you are back in 1400, with tournaments, fabulous creatures and busy people going about the town. For 25 years, the massive war machines, the trebuchets, have flung balls of stone out over the straight, and gallant knights have jousted daily in dramatic tournaments. Throughout the summer the town provides exciting and slightly scary experiences. Venture into the forest and meet Underground People, the three-legged ghost horse and the water elf, mythical beings from the Middle Ages. Watch the building of a church or discover some of the smart inventions of the Middle Ages.

Join us for a day of fun for all the family. Enjoy a whole day trying out all our activities in the park, which extends over an area of about 111,000 m2.

Crocodiles were already living on the earth 200 million years ago – side by side with dinosaurs. Now you can see the entire crocodile race on your holiday!

CROCODILE ZOO On Falster, not far from the Farø bridges, is Europe’s BIGGEST Crocodile Zoo, with all the world’s living crocodile species as well as snakes, giant turtles and monkeys. Take a break from the beach - and visit the crocodiles’ world - if you dare!

All crocodile species The Crocodile Zoo has crocodiles of all sizes in the many different pools, or you can see snakes, monkeys and giant turtles. The star of the show is Sobek, the African Nile crocodile. Over five metres long, he weighs more than half a ton, and is the biggest animal in the zoo.

NIGHT ZOO – with feeding at night Between the palms and pools in the Crocodile Zoo everything is pitch dark. All is silent except softly trickling water and the cry of a bird. You hear a rustle in the undergrowth. Suddenly red eyes gleam as they are caught in the light of a torch. Sobek has woken up, and he’s hungry!

At the other end, the Nile crocodile group, ‘Samson and the girls’, has moved in. They moved to Norway in 2009, but now they are home again as the greatest attraction at the Zoo. Together with 22 other crocodiles the Nile crocodiles makes it the biggest crocodile zoo in Europe, with all 23 species of crocodiles alive today.

In the summer, late in the evenings, you can meet Sobek, the rare tree leopards and all their friends at a very special event, the Crocodile NIGHT ZOO.

WHAT YOU WILL SEE... The Crocodile Zoo invites you to an amazing world that has all 23 living crocodile species. You can hold the smallest in your hand – and we have the biggest in Europe, more than 5 metres long!

Maribo surrounds the north end of Søndersø, naturally centred on the cathedral. A walk or cycle ride round the lake is warmly recommended.

THE CATHEDRAL Maribo Cathedral was built in about 1470 as part of an abbey, whose ruins are still visible. The church has been reconstructed and repaired several times in recent centuries, but has now been restored to its original mediaeval form. The inner walls have been restored recently, and the cathedral is now open to visitors. It stands in beautiful surroundings facing Maribo Lake, and a visit to the cathedral can naturally be combined with a walk round the lake. More details at www.maribodomkirke.dk

PILGRIMAGE For 1000 years, Lolland-Falster has been on the route for pilgrims travelling south. The tradition has been re-interpreted in fine walking routes. You can go on a spiritual journey too, as you walk. In Maribo there is a fine pilgrim centre with a café and hostel.

MARIBO - WELL WORTH A VISIT

dIvine by nature The monastic city of Maribo is a busy market town, full of culture, history and natural beauty too. The Maribo Lakes Nature Park is literally part of the town.

NATURE NEAR MARIBO

Maribo has a rich history going back to the monastic age in the 15th century, so the cathedral is a natural starting point for a historic walk round Maribo. On certain days you can go round with the watchman as he sings the old verses in the streets. The museum railway takes visitors to Bandholm and back in the oldest steam train still functioning in Denmark. The Stiftsmuseum is next to Maribo Station, and shows art and history. You can see some of the objects found while constructing the Femern link, such as the oldest brain of a goat in Denmark.

The 50 km2 Maribo Lakes Nature Park is right next to the town. Walking or cycling along the paths round the lakes you come right out in varied and stunningly beautiful countryside. Or you can enjoy sailing on the lakes in Anemonen, which cruises regularly to the island of Borgø.

NATURAL BEAUTY BY THE SEA Lolland and Falster are surrounded and separated by the sea, and the lakes are lovely. So you can cruise with the touring boats, hire a kayak, or simply walk close to the water’s edge. Maribo Lakes Nature Park In the middle of the magnificent landscape of Lolland’s manor estates lies the protected Maribo Lakes Nature Park. The park is a unique habitat for many birds and animal species. White-tailed eagles are rare in Denmark, but they live here, beside red-crested pochard, once declared extinct in Denmark, and rare migratory birds stop here to feed. The nature park is accessible for walkers and cyclists, and by kayak or canoe. Why not book a guided walk or boat trip? See more at www.naturparkmaribo.dk Out to sea with Anemonen A blue kingfisher or eagles swooping. Binoculars and a bird-book are a good idea if you sail with Anemonen. The boat cruises from the quay near Maribo Cathedral from May to September, close to nature on the beautiful lakes. Special events are arranged during the summer, when you can watch the sunset over the lakes, or enjoy a gourmet meal with wine and music. There are also trips to the 12th-century royal castle on Borgø. See more at www.naturparkmaribo.dk The fjord with most islands See seals lazing in the sun, or watch the amazing bird life in the Nakskov Fjord Nature Park. The area covers about 55 km2, extending from the shallow waters in the fjord over flat meadows and Albuen, an angled spit of land where mediaeval herring markets were held. THE MOST southern

TIP OF SCANDINAVIA

Take an evening walk to the southern tip of Scandinavia, and look across the Baltic towards Germany, or watch a wonderful sunset over Gedser.

VisitLolland-Falster.com

#visitlollandfalster

FEEL THE FORCES OF NATURE There is a very special feeling when you stand at the top of Gedser Odde, where you can see the sea on all sides. Feel the strength of the wind as you remember that this is the very end of Scandinavia.

The power of nature is strong on Gedser Odde, with the waves beating in on one side, while it may be perfectly calm on the other. The area is ideal for birds, and every spring and autumn thousands migrate past, as it is on the main route for the birds. Walk along the beach and see what washes in. Stones from the ice age are thrown up by the waves, or you may be lucky enough to find amber or fossils. Sydstenen - the Southern Stone - marks the most southern tip of Scandinavia. It weighs four tons and is a billion years old. On the way to the Southern Stone is the old marine station, formerly one of Denmark’s most important military facilities, which guarded the eastern part of the Baltic for more than 50 years. Today the marine station is an information point, and in the summer there are interesting exhibitions. You can always read about local history and geology, and migrating birds.

Gedser Odde Gedser Odde is surrounded by 25 km of clean, sandy beaches.

On the east side are the remains of a German radar station from World War II. The concrete blocks were foundations for anti-aircraft guns to protect the radar station, which was originally higher up the slope. The sea has eroded the coast, so the blocks are now on the beach.

GO FOR A WALK ON THE QUAY

THE HARBOUR ATMOSPHERE Walking along the quay with an ice cream in your hand, enjoying the calm as you watch the ships quietly sailing in. There are lots of friendly harbours round Lolland-Falster. These three are well worth a visit.

Kragenæs Marina

Nakskov Harbour is most beautiful seen from a boat sailing in through Nakskov Fjord, but it is still a pretty, lively harbour when approached from the land side. Nakskov is traditionally a shipbuilding town, and there is now a growing industry in the shipyard on the south side. Elegant ships often berth at the quay facing the town, and at the northern end of the basin is the yachting harbour. From there you can drive, walk or cycle along the fjord on the beach promenade.

Small ferries cross to Femø and Fejø from Kragenæs Harbour on the north of Lolland. Next to it is the Marina, which is a lively yachting harbour. Many of the owners use their boats like caravans, sleeping in them and enjoying themselves without necessarily sailing away from the land. There is always a lively atmosphere at Kragenæs Marina, which also has a café, playgrounds and a little supermarket.

>

Nakskov HARBOUR

>

> Nysted HARBOUR

Nysted harbour is at the centre of the town on south Lolland. Every year, many tourists and local people enjoy an idyllic walk and an ice cream on the mole, with its characteristic red buildings and magnificent scenery. There are camp fire sites, so you can bring your own food, or eat at the reasonably priced restaurants and kiosks. The harbour also has a playground, crazy golf and pedal boats for hire. The Shark Cutter Regatta is held in Nysted in August, with sailing races, and music and entertainment on land.

Tip Visit the friendly harbour at Guldborg on the enorth-east coast of Lolland. Enjoy a walk on the quay with a good old-fashioned ice cream, and you can buy freshly caught fish or shrimps from local fishermen.

The most southerN town in Denmark

WE KNOW WHERE The ferry from Rostock calls at Gedser, the home of iconic film buildings and a nostalgic railway. Taste the smoked specialities too. Gedser is well worth a visit.

THE YELLOW PALACE The Yellow Palace was a command post in one of the Olsen Banden films, and is greatly treasured by Olsen Banden fans. For years it had stood unused, and was due for demolition, when Danish and German fans made a plan and were allowed to move it. The foundation for preservation of the Gedser Engine Shed provided a site, so the Yellow Palace now stands in Gedser, close to the harbour.

>

GEDSER ENGINE SHED

>

More information at www.gedserremise.dk

The Engine Shed is the building where Danish railway locomotives were maintained and prepared for service until the 1980s. Today, it is a railway museum with an exhibition of rolling stock and veteran trains. There are 12 tracks and a turntable linking the buildings. Visitors can try out the old cycle trolleys at the Engine Shed.

The Black Geomuseum in Gedser has an impressive collection of rocks, fossils and amber that have washed in at Gedser Odde. The museum takes you back millions of years through the earth’s geological history, to the time when the dinosaurs moved onto the land. More information at www.detsortegeomuseum.dk

LIKE OLDen DAYS THE CHARMING MARIBO OPEN-AIR MUSEUM IS SURROUNDED BY NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL COUNTRYside AND CLOSE TO THE LAKES. GO BACK IN HISTORY AND VISIT A FARM, A BLACKSMITH, THE ROPE-MAKER, THE SCHOOL AND THE FIRE STATION. THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT GARDENS AND A STEAM-DRIVEN LOCOMOBILE. EVERY YEAR, A STEAM RALLY IS HELD, WHICH DRAWS STEAM ENTHUSIASTS FROM ALL OVER DENMARK AND EUROPE.

TRY A CATTLE SAFARI Hold on tight, because it’s quite a ride! At Kirkehøjens Limousine you are taken close to the big red-brown limousine cattle and their sweet little calves as they graze in the pastures. On the safari, visitors ride in a trailer with benches, and there is room for wheelchairs and prams.

FARM HOLIDAY WITH FRIENDLY ANIMALS Kernegaarden on Fejø is a relaxed farmyard where you can stroke the goats, rabbits and kittens. The Winter family grow and make a series of good food products themselves, not forgetting award-winning apple juice. There are holiday homes at Kernegaarden, but you are welcome just to visit and look round the farm shop.

VisitLolland-Falster.com

CHUG INTO HISTORY ON THE MUSEUM RAILWAY The veteran train in Maribo takes you through a chapter of Danish history. Maribo was the only market town on Lolland with no harbour, but from 1869 it had the first privatelyowned railway in Denmark, to transport passengers and agricultural produce to Bandholm. Today it is operated as a museum railway. Guests ride in trains pulled by KIØGE, the oldest steam locomotive still operating in Denmark, and you can visit the large collection of steam and diesel locomotives and rolling stock from 1869 – 1935. The line is still used occasionally as a goods line.

Fun for everyone Sometimes we should leave the present and our modern technology behind. Go back to nature and in time to when everything just happened at a calmer pace. Lolland-Falster has plenty to offer for young and old and everyone in between. Come and join us where things are still as they used to be.

HYLLEKROG LIGHTHOUSE

Hyllekrog lighthouse is over 100 years old, and has now been restored and is open for visitors. The view from the top is one of the finest in Denmark, looking out over the sea, the landscape and wind turbines at sea. Bird life flourishes in the bird sanctuary around the lighthouse. At times you can see thousands of migrating birds, and seals and eider ducks as well if you are lucky. You have to park the car and walk about 3 km out on the landspit to reach the lighthouse.

By the outer quay at Bandholm harbour, near the landing stage for the Askø ferry, you come to the bathing facility. There are two jetties, a flume, and 16 changing cubicles. Next to the harbour is a fine new sandy beach, which is open to the public. Bandholm often has the warmest sea bathing water of Denmark because the water is shallow in the Småland Sea.

Skejten

Skejten is a famous little peninsula on the west bank of Guldborgsund. It is a nature reserve with uneven paths and primitive bridges. The great, flourishing oak trees are believed to be more than 300 years old. Artists have visited Skejten for more than a century, and the big meeting hall of the Folketing is decorated with paintings of it. You can easily combine an outing here with a visit to Fuglsang Art Museum.

A TASTE OF SUMMER

COME AND SEE DENMARK’S BIGGEST FRUIT GARDEN Dewy fresh strawberries, newly dug potatoes - all the best of the season’s fruit and vegetables. As soon as you are out of town and in the country, you see wayside stalls and farm shops, one after another.

FRESHPICKED HOLIDAYS It is quite obvious why Lolland-Falster is compared with Provence. There are fruit trees everywhere, while the mild climate and rich soil guarantee fruit and vegetables in a class of their own. You see an old table by the roadside, with rough-and-ready shelves made of wooden crates. Fresh flowers prettily arranged in an old tin can, and beside them is the obligatory money box. Take a close look: this is one of dozens of roadside stalls on Lolland-Falster, where the vegetables are fresh and the newly picked fruit is bursting with juice. There may be a few jars of delicious home-made jam or newly extracted honey.

FOOD MARKET AND FRUIT FESTIVAL Visit the Southern Islands’ fruit festival and the great food market in Sakskøbing. For a weekend the town turns into a paradise of fresh fruit and creative cooks, all competing in inventiveness. Read more at www.frugtfestival.dk

There are just as many possibilities as roadside stalls. That means plenty. They are everywhere on Lolland-Falster and the islands, Fejø, Femø and Askø. If you are looking for something particular, go for the farm shops, where the selection is wide, and you can buy everything for a meal: chicken or beef, wine and vegetables. Not forgetting something sweet for dessert. Several places let you bring the whole family and visit the animals in the stables, or see how their products are made. In the autumn the apples are ripe and the juice presses are busy. Find farm shops at www.visitlolland-falster.com

FARMING ON LOLLAND-FALSTER

DEVELOPMENT and GOOD SOIL WORLD CLASS PLANT PRODUCTION

>

The rich soil and mild climate on Lolland-Falster are ideal conditions for plant production. In fact, 25% of the total private employment in the region is in the farming sector or the derived industries that process products from or for agriculture. Best known are the sugar factories, which produce large quantities of sugar. There are also three seed merchants in the region: one supplies grass seed for football pitches worldwide, and the others supply the majority of the world’s total of spinach seed. Ardo on North Falster produces frozen green peas from more than 1000 hectares, and supermarkets are important customers for the peas. Nakskov Mill Foods on west Lolland produces large quantities of breakfast cereals, and SEiMEi make the delicious ’WiSH’ juices. Lolland-Falster has more fruit than any other region in Denmark. Many therefore grow apples and pears and produce variations of fine apple juice.

Knuthenlund The Knuthenlund estate is famous for its award-winning cheeses and for Denmark’s largest shift to organic farming. It is always a friendly place to visit, and you are welcome in the farm shop and café, to talk to the animals or go for walks in the fields and the woods. Knuthenlund has its own dairy and flour mill, while cows and pigs roam free. The policy at Knuthenlund is that ‘we always do it if it needs extra care’. You can taste it in their products, which are simply top class. ARE YOU THIRSTY? THE DRINKS ARE

WORLD CLASS The climate on Lolland-Falster is ideal for growing apples and cherries, and you can taste it in locally produced cherry wines and apple juice. The local beers are in a class of their own, too.

KRENKERUP BREWERY

>

Guldborgsund Fruit is a group of four farms with apple orchards along Guldborgsund. Like many others in the area, they grow fantastic apples and make delicious apple juice. Guldborgsund Æbler have just launched a new, nonalcoholic sparkling drink, SPRING, in apple and plum flavours. They are not quite as sweet as apple juice, just slightly drier, with lots of refreshing bubbles, so they are a fine substitute for cider or champagne. They are sold in many Coop shops and in specialist shops on Lolland-Falster.

>

GULDBORGSUND FRUIT

>

Krenkerup Brewery’s German master brewer makes fine beer using traditional methods. Just try Krenkerup’s powerful Doppel Bock, which has been nominated the best in Europe. You can taste the many varieties of beer in the restaurant, or you can buy a two-litre bottle with the flavour of your choice, and bring it back to have it refilled.

Frederiksdal CHERRY WINE Frederiksdal’s cherry orchards grow on the western tip of Lolland, close to the Langeland Belt. It is one of the warmest and sunniest areas of Denmark, and you can taste it! World class cherry wine is made there, and it has received awards and acclaim from connoisseurs. The wines are richer and more vinous than the best known cherry wines. In short, a unique product that has to be tasted. Try Frederiksdal’s new cherry liqueur, too: it is a new interpretation of dessert wine.

OUT IN THE OPEN AIR

Art Lolland-Falster has plenty of art to offer in museums and galleries, but there are also works of art in the open air - quite free of charge!

ART IN THE STREET SCENE

>

Driving round the towns on Lolland-Falster you will see numerous works of art outdoors. On the square in Sakskøbing is a bronze statue of two Polish farm workers. The Gammeltorv square in Nysted has a fountain in bronze. Near the station in Nykøbing is a sugar beet, with streams of water forming the leaves of the beet. There is plenty more to see in the towns and the countryside just keep your eyes open!

In a field on the north side of Lolland, twelve stone pillars are being raised. This local ‘Stonehenge’ is called the Dodecalith, a tribute to the mythical tribe called the Lolers, who were believed to have come to Lolland more than 5000 years ago. They are said to have raised a circle of twelve stone monuments, which regularly sang like a choir. The local people were enchanted by the beautiful song, but also found it frightening. The song was said to be especially powerful at midsummer, and anyone brave enough to approach the stones on midsummer night would see women hovering and dancing in and around the stone circle.

>

THE DODECALITH

The artist working on the Dodecalith is Thomas Kadziola, and you can also see his carved stone faces near the theatre in Nykøbing F. and by the harbour front in Nakskov. Granite blocks weighing several tons are transported from Sweden to Lolland, where Thomas Kadziola carves the faces with a chisel. So far, he has carved four faces, and why worry if the process takes several years, when he knows that the Dodecalith may stand for a thousand years? Park the car in Kragenæs and walk to the Dodecalith along the Glentehøj path. More information at www.dodekalit.dk

SAKSKØBING

MARKET TOWN ON A BEAUTIFUL FJORD sakskøbing fjord FRUIT FESTIVAL

FARM SHOP IN SAKSKØBING

A MAGNET FOR FOODIES Visit Sakskøbing and taste what good food is The town on Sakskøbing Fjord is a market centre for local food products, the place to buy fresh local fruit and vegetables, meat from local farms, and lots more.

58

VisitLolland-Falster.com

It is a friendly old provincial market town. You pass many fascinating shops on a walk through the streets round the square and along Søndergade. Sakskøbing is renowned for its active, well-supplied shops. The town is becoming the regional gastronomic centre with its wide range of local food products. Local food production and gastronomic activities all culminate during the fruit harvest at the Fruit Festival in September. Many producers of fresh foods are based in the area around Sakskøbing and local products are sold daily at Sakskøbing Madhus on the square, where cookery courses are also run. Sakskøbing is the town with gastronomic experiences for everyone - for your palate, eye and shopping basket!

Ten years with Sakskøbing Fruit Festival

Ten years ago, Claus Meyer started the annual festival celebrating pomes and drupes in the area where they grow best. Now people come swarming to taste, eat and enjoy themselves, and buy the best to take home. There is no shortage of tempting offers in the shopping streets and the town square. Long rows of stalls offer samples to taste of all kinds of apples and pears and top quality apple juice and fruit wine. Try something more substantial too – old-fashioned apple cake, fried pork with apples, or a fresh-baked cinnamon twist made with apple sourdough. There is nothing quite like Sakskøbing Fruit Festival: it is unique. It is a fruit market where the theme on every stall is fruit, but it is far more than that. The festival includes a major contest for chefs, a cake contest, a fitness run, guided tours of a fruit warehouse and the annual fruit eating contest.

PEACEFUL MOMENTS IN

TOWN OASES THE PARK IN STUBBEKØBING

>

Two wealthy merchants took the initiative in 1882 to lay out a park in Stubbekøbing. It spreads to Grønsund, with a bathing pier and a playground as well as little paths, steps, slopes and lakes, bushes and mature trees. A lovely place for a walk or a picnic.

>

Slotsbryggen iN Nykøbing

Svingelen iN Nakskov

>

Slotsbryggen is the new harbour in Nykøbing, which extends right into the town. Sit and dangle your feet over the edge and watch the sunset, or enjoy a meal and a drink at one of the restaurants. A 100-metre walk along the Guldborgsund will take you to a green area with camp fire sites. You can walk further along Guldborgsund with a fine view across to Lolland.

For centuries the Svingelen woods have been a recreational area for residents of Nakskov, with somewhere serving food since 1836. The pretty woods on the edge of the town are a lovely setting for lunch outdoors. Take your own picnic basket, or eat at the restaurant.

It is not just the countryside on Lolland-Falster that invites relaxation. There are peaceful green oases in the towns too, just perfect for a little peace and quiet. Tourist Magazine 2017

Nykøbing Falster

A HISTORIC TOWN

Nykøbing Falster, the biggest town on the ‘Southern Islands’, is famous for the Mediaeval centre and the annual Revue. It is great for shopping, with activities and historic events for all the family.

Activities in the town

It is lively in the streets when everything is open for a ‘Late Night’ several times a year. The shops are not just open late: it is a festive event and draws in the crowds with special offers. The town is fun to visit when the market is held in the square, with activities and entertainment in the streets, or the popular revue is on at the theatre.

FUN FOR EVERYONE

MANY PLACES TO EAT

>

GREAT FOR SHOPPING In the centre of Nykøbing there are more than twenty different restaurants and cafés - which serve everything from juicy steaks to fine gourmet menus in friendly settings. Most of them serve food and drinks outdoors if you like, and it easy to find a café for a cup of coffee or a cold beer.

>

>

It can be difficult to choose whether to visit the town’s modern cinema, see the past at the Mediaeval Centre, or go to the swimming centre or Guldborgsund Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Nykøbing has something for every taste and for all the family.

Nykøbing was founded in the 12th century, and on a walk through the town you will see many old buildings and the ruins of Nykøbing Castle. It has always been a lively market town, and there is still something for everyone in the largest shopping town on Lolland-Falster. It has a wide selection of shops – both nationwide chains with well-known brands and exciting specialist shops.

POST-BOAT TRIPS ALL SUMMER, YOU CAN SAIL IN THE MORNING WITH THE POST-BOAT, LANDING WHERE POST IS TO BE DELIVERED. IN THE AFTERNOON, YOU CAN CHOOSE A TWO-HOUR ISLAND TRIP, OR A 3½-HOUR ISLAND HOP. ON THURSDAY AFTERNOONS IN JULY VESTA SAILS ON SUN TOURS TO ALBUEN: YOU CAN BATHE OR ENJOY A PICNIC.

JOURNEY IN TIME WITH THE POST-BOAT The wide hull of the boat glides slowly between the islands in Nakskov Fjord. A half-hour crossing brings the boat to the Middle Ages on Slotø, where Engelsborg Castle was built by King Hans in 1509. In fact it is more a shipyard than a castle. Ships were built there between 1509 and 1534, some of them the world’s largest at the time. King Christian IV built ships on the island from 1623 – 1633. The postboat continues its journey to Enehøje. Here lived some of the very first people who came to Denmark. From 1926 – 1940, the polar explorer Peter Freuchen lived on the

66

island. He sat in the Blue Forge as editor of the magazine Ude og Hjemme, and wrote several books. On the highest point of the island stands the statue of “Great Peter”. The old post-boat, Vesta, is a piece of history itself, built in 1924 to serve as a ferry from Kragenæs to Fejø. In 1937 it was bought by the postman on Nakskov Fjord, who sailed with parcels, letters and provisions to the islands. There are also tours to Albuen, and the mediaeval herring market, pilot’s house, lighthouse and fishers’ cottages. After an hour’s visit, the boat returns to Nakskov.

IN AUGUST THE SUN TOURS GO TO ENEHØJE, AND YOU CAN PICK BLACKBERRIES FROM BIG BRAMBLE BUSHES ON THE ISLAND. BOOKING: POSTBAADEN@GMAIL.COM or TEL. +45 25 88 82 36 / +45 54 93 12 36. Meeting venue: Havnegade 27, DK-4900 Nakskov PRICES AND TOUR DETAILS: WWW.POSTBAADEN.DK

A HISTORIC MARKET TOWN Shopping is fun in Nakskov’s friendly streets, with more than 70 specialist shops. The town has managed to preserve much of its history, dating back to the Middle Ages. On a walk through the town along its small streets and alleys you pass timber-framed buildings, warehouses and merchants’ yards, not forgetting the 13th-Century St. Nikolai Church. There is music on Axeltorv on Saturdays in July and August.

THE FJORD AND THE HARBOUR

>

ART, CULTURE AND MUSIC

>

Nakskov has been a shipbuilding town for centuries, and the harbour is not far from the town’s main street. You can see the commercial harbour and yachting harbour. Denmark’s oldest and best preserved schooner, Johanne, is normally berthed in the harbour too. This is the mouth of Nakskov Fjord, which has more islands in it than any other Danish fjord. The fjord’s natural beauty and rich wildlife can be seen from the post-boat. Another way to enjoy the fjord is to drive to Albuen. After parking the car, there is a five-kilometre walk to the end of the landspit.

Nakskov is adorned with 36 large sculptures, some by the internationally known Per Kirkeby, who made the bronze sculptures by the Copenhagen Opera House, and some by John Kørner, who has decorated the Crown Prince’s palace at Amalienborg. You can also see his bronze statue of Peter Freuchen if you sail with the post-boat to Enehøje in Nakskov Fjord. Nakskov’s cultural life includes an active theatre, various choirs and several museums, such as the Ships & Shipping Museum, the Sugar Museum and the printing works (Gamle Trykkeri).

SOUTH ON THE FERRY GERMANY IS ONLY AN HOUR AWAY. CLOSE TO THE QUAY, YOU CAN ENJOY YOURSELF IN THE SMALL TOWNS OF BURG AND HEILIGENHAFEN. THERE IS LOTS TO DO FOR A WHOLE DAY OR MORE IN LÜBECK AND HAMBURG, JUST A SHORT DRIVE AWAY.

MØNS KLINT GEOCENTER

Vikings at the Danish Castle Centre

Travel 70 million years back in time, and spend an interactive day in the Cretaceous Period among dinosaurs and volcanic eruptions. The Møns Klint Geocenter offers 500 different activities during the season, and there are plenty of special exhibitions. Visit the natural white chalk cliffs at Møns Klint. They are breath-taking – both the energetic walk and the glorious views.

The Goose Tower at the Danish Castle Centre in Vordingborg is Scandinavia’s best-preserved mediaeval tower, while the interactive learning centre is all about kings, castles and power in the Middle Ages. For the first time, you can see the world’s largest Viking exhibition, ‘Viking Metropolis’, in the Castle Centre, with the most exciting finds from the great Viking town at Hedeby. It includes a sword inlaid with gold, beads made of glass, amber and bone, tools used for exquisite craftsmanship, and King Harald’s ship burial – altogether more than 2000 treasures from the Viking age. Don’t miss the Viking days in the castle grounds on 12 – 13 August, with crafts, guided tours, bubbling stews to taste and battling warriors.

Not far away Lolland-Falster has lots to offer – and most of it is within a convenient driving distance. If you want to go a little further afield, there is lots to enjoy in the neighbouring areas to the north and south.

Tivoli Had enough of the beach and the sun? Nip across to Copenhagen. The big city is only about an hour’s drive from the motorway bridge to Zealand, or there are good rail connections. Shop all along Strøget, have lunch in Nyhavn, and round off with a great evening in Tivoli. It is truly magical when it all lights up.

RUNNING ON THE DYKES Large sections of the Lolland-Falster coasts are protected by dykes. Fine for a run along gravel paths with fresh air and a view of the sea. There are paths all along the south coast of Lolland from Nakskov to Rødby, and along the east coast of Falster.

MUSEUMS ON LOLLAND-FALSTER

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS Visit the museums and learn about refugees on their gruelling journey, the legend of the royal physician who came to power, and country life 300 years ago.

Reventlow-Museum THE HERITAGE OF STRUENSEE

See a special exhibition about refugees fleeing from the Middle East. In collaboration with the National Museum of Denmark, the Stiftsmuseet focuses on refugees as they cross the Mediterranean to seek asylum in Denmark.

During the season, the museum is arranging a series of activities associated with the exhibition. See more about dates and opening hours at wwww.museumlollandfalster.dk

>

Through stories and objects you cross the sea with them, see the camps, and how they arrive in Denmark, then wait to hear whether they will be allowed to stay. You will see rubber dinghies, life-jackets, hairdresser’s shears, buggies and food tubs used on the journey. See videos and multimedia with children’s drawings and personal stories. It is a touching, hands-on exhibition, raising major issues and dilemmas.

Johann Friedrich Struensee, physician to the royal household, is chiefly remembered for a meteoric career at court, his affair with Queen Caroline Mathilde, and his subsequent execution. The reforms he introduced in society and agriculture were ahead of their time, and influenced landowners on Lolland.

>

STIFTSMUSEET IN MARIBO Fleeing

>

The special exhibition at the Reventlow Museum in Pederstrup focuses on Struensee, the man and the myth. Who was he, what brought him to power, and how did he influence society? Was he motivated solely by hopes for a better world? Did he understand the rules of power, and were his reforms ahead of his time?

THE OPEN-AIR MUSEUM FOOD, MEDICINAL HERBS, HOUSES

In June, July and August the Open-Air Museum in Maribo is focusing on three topics that bring you close to the country people who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The exhibition runs from June to November 2017.

There is a different topic for each of the summer months: food and diet, medicinal herbs, and the old buildings and how they were repaired and kept in good condition.
