Design Brief

Hornsey Police Station served for 146 years, it is now an abandoned building and site after 4 years of trying to save it. opened on 22 January 1875 and permanently closed in January 2021, the government and local community haven't found a new use for the site. The local public is consisting of many schools, ranging in ages, however, the youth centres available aren't funded well and are very rundown not mentioning the uninviting sites as shown below.

The buildings in the borough are dull and bring a cold and unsafe feeling. Most children growing up in the borough of Haringey come from humble families where the parents are earning minimum wages, or they have single parents. 36% of children in this area are eligible for free school meals with the number constantly growing, for example, the percentage has increased by 14% over the last 12 months. With this information we can gather that the parents of children living in Haringey work minimum wage jobs which may mean they come home late. From observation I can say that many children stay out on the streets or home alone because they're parents are at home, and they can'tafford after school clubs.

As a result, the old police station site will be demolished, and a brand-new youth centre will replace its' site to attracts younger children to take up after school activities and to help minimum wage parents.

Design Specification

I chose the theme of freedom and restriction as I believe it is great way to summarize society. Some people get all the freedom they want whereas others are restricted at every step. My project is a great example for this theme. Police have all the freedom they want to put restrictions on people who aren't following the law, in some situations these people are innocent, but they are still restricted. Therefore, demolishing the old police station would be a power movement and would put faith in the youth giving them freedom over themselves and empowering young people to be their most authentic selves, encouraging success and freedom to become whoever they want.

However, being a working parent is also restricting because not many parents have the freedom to develop themselves and aren't encouraged to succeed in their careers due to having children at home. This means having children is restricting. This issue can be resolved by creating a fun and engaging youth centre. This gives the parents freedom as their children have extra activities. This gives parents more time and reduces stress as they have time to either unwind and relax, practice some selfcare, clean the house or to flourish in their careers.

As you can see a youth centre is a perfect example of freedom and restriction.

The design must include:

Youth centres

New developments

An in-depth analysis of the area shows that there are multiple schools in the area but not enough youth centres for the students . The youth centres on this map are not accessible for everyone as both YMCA and Muswell Hill Centre, you must pay for your lessons around £15 per session. My site is great to create a youth centre as it is dead centre of most schools and therefore attendees will find many familiar faces. What I have found with past experiences is that youth centres are discouraging for students as you either have to travel to attend or you have to pay to access the class. I find that many youth centres are also very restricting as you must be within the session for a set amount of time. Youth centres often organise clubs and extra curriculum activities however the travel and timing is demotivating for students as often there is traffic or during the winter they must travel home after dark so therefore, students tend to avoid extra curriculum or quit halfway through attending. My site however is within walking distance and my design will not restrict students' hobbies . This means that all clubs will be accessible at any given time as the whole purpose of a youth centre is to empower students to find the strengths and weakness, to encourage individuality.

Existing Social Centre La Castilla – social centre (Spain)

The Social centre was opened from a refurbished and expanded existing building. previously the building was located next to a youth centre and had been refurbished to fit societal needs of a seniors' day centre, where elderly can come and meet with friends or socialise with new people. A new centre piece was created for participants of both centre to enjoy outdoor activities. .

Most of the old structure was broken and therefore isn't a big part of the newer centre. The building circulates around the patio to create privacy.

The inner walls of this amazing structure are built of glass windows to allow light to flow through the rooms. This also creates a feeling of safety as it shields people from the outdoor world, but they are still able to look out and see what is going on almost like a safety bubble, intruders can't enter but you can still see them

A memorable pieces of the building, stands out with its firey colours and and instantly catches the eye. These are the hexagonal ceramic tiles, ranging in shades of red, orange and yellow. These are featured all throughout the building from the roof to the help desk to the walls and floors of eateries in the building. The warm terrocata feature gives an exciting feel to the centre and therefore brings back the life in the elderly visitors.

Existing education centre

Faroe Island Education Centre

Faroe Islands Education Center will be built on the Faeroe Islands. It is situated on a hillside in the outskirts of Tórshavn, the capital of the Faeroe Islands, on Streymoy, the largest and most populated of the 18 islands making up the Faeroe.

Seating area on steps

The project is designed as a vortex, overlooking the water, mountains and harbour of Torshavn. The conditions of the vortex create a place for communities to gather in order to experience the lessons of life.

Institutions are organised as a school within another school. This is easily explained as a smaller educational centre tied to a specific school. This means that each educational centre has the learning environment of the school it is tied to in order for students to have the best learning experience that is provided by their school. This means that lessons taught in school will not differ in explanations given at centres.

The wings of the vortex provide unique opportunities for students to have a natural surrounding which infuses a calming atmosphere making an easier and better-focused environment. The vortex provides enough space for three schools to claim the environment and give support to their students. However, each school works independently. The centre of the vortex creates a gathering point making space for socialisation. The gathering point can be used for different activities, for example: lecture, exhibitions, performance, cafeteria, etc. The vortex will house over 1,200 students and 300 teachers.

Existing youth cultural centre

NanjingInternational Youth Cultural Centre

The Centre is located on the river in Hexi New Town. The project includes a 106,500 m2 conference centre, two towers concluding in 258,500 m2 and 100,000 m2 of basement areas

The centre expresses the connectivity between the urban environment of Hexi New Town, and the rural landscapes of Jiangxi Zhou Island in connected by a pedestrian bridge.

The taller of the two towers is 68 floors high and is made up of office floors and the Jumeirah Hotel. The shorter tower is 59 floors in height and contains a 4-star hotel. The two towers share a mixed-use podium that houses the Cultural Centre.

The cultural centre is made of four main elements a Conference Hall, an Auditorium, a Multifunctional Hall and Guest Zone, which are independent volumes surrounding a central courtyard. This allows pedestrians to walk through an open landscape at ground level.

Between the tower and podium, the glass facade gradually transforms into a grid of concrete panels giving the impression that the building is rising from the nearby river but has been caught in a fishnet which gives an effect of restriction.

The conference rooms are equipped for many purposes for example, theatrical and historical events.

Site analysis

The existing accommodation extends to approximately 1,184m sq. A range of uses lie within walking distance including a mixture of retail facilities, leisure amenities and residential. However, with the many schools in the area, Haringey lacks in youth centres.

Hornsey Rail Station is located 0.2 miles to the north east of the siteproviding regular National Rail services into Central London and to Welwyn Garden City, Hertford North, Stevenage and beyond.

Turnpike Lane Station (Piccadilly Line) is the closestunderground station located approximately 0.8 miles to the north east of the site.

The A1 and A10 run to the west and eastof the property.

And numerous bus stops within walking distance for the 144, 41, W3 and W5

Primary research – Site visit

The main building is three storeys in height and is made from red brick with large windows. The rear of the site consists of small one storey brick offices.

A single storey extension has been added to the main building facing the car park. The rest of the city is a car park with a surrounding tall red brick wall to keep the former police station private to the public.

The square will be rejuvenated to emphasize original features like the fountain and the street lighting. The central green space will be kept due to the mature trees and lawn garden, but seating and vibrant plants will be added around the lawn.

The square will be filled with a variety of cafés and restaurants to serve the community and be inclusive and welcoming.

Set off Crouch End Broadway in North London, the Grade II* listed Hornsey Town Hall is steeped in history, with a rich heritage stretching back almost 80 years. At once preserving the past and embracing the future, this landmark development includes an arts centre and hotel in the meticulously restored Town Hall, together with an improved public square and a newly built collection of studio, one, two and three bedroom apartments in the Town Hall grounds.

The previous site

Smithfield Square is a development in completed in 2018.

Currently formed of 4 housing blocks. One of them holds 438 residential flats, a large underground carpark, Sainsburys supermarket and a small Argos, making this living complex have all the basic needs for residents to live.

Dating back to the 1900s, behind the shops were narrowalleys which lead to accommodation for the lower-class families.

Just behind the high street was Hornsey's Sanitary Depot which had opened in 1886 the sitehoused a coroner’s court, a mortuary and caretaker’s cottage. The range of buildings under the sanitary depot also contained a disinfector and fumigator, ambulancesheds, stabling for 20 horses and a horsekeeper’s cottage. Finally, a tall chimney was partof the land as a dust destructor.

The Development of Tottenham Hotspur's Stadium developed a sports and entertainment landmark. The shape of the stadium makes easier for spectators to watch the match as they are closer to the pitch. The structure of the stadium is so intricately designed that it holds 62,850 fans.

The venue also hosts a minimum of two NFL games each season for 10 years. The field consists of a retractable grass, with artificial surfaces underneath to suit the hosting of NFL matches, concerts and other events.

The stadium also has specialised facilities for the NFL teams, including locker rooms. Catering is provided for the team players. The seat format of the bowl provides a good view for every game/events at held at the stadium.

The structure of the stadium appears to wrap itself around the building almost in a wave like pattern reveal bits of glass here and there but is really impressive when it reaches home base as it comes together at the top and shows of a beautiful glass arch.

This means that when thinking about my design I want to consider the schools and age groups attending these schools in order to make my design more inclusive. As a result, I will be able to put together a rough idea of what I need to include within my design to keep all attending age groups entertained

My site is a 3 minute walk from the primary school.

Restriction

Theme – Freedom and Restriction

As I picked freedom and restriction for my theme, I photographed things I spotted on my journey. On this slide I've presented a lake as the flow of the ripples and calming stream presented itself as free, its slow small waves flowed in every direction showing that there was nothing restraining it.

Freedom

The sketches on the left are inspired by a handle on an overground train because the loop flows by itself forming a tear drop shapes however it does have the freedom to flow in any direction which I found very interesting.

The sketches on the left are inspired from a tree I saw on one of my walks. It again gave of a feeling of freedom as it doesn't grow in a pointy triangle shape or a circle shape like other trees it grows in every direction because there is nothing restricting it.

Pavillion
Research

I felt this part of my component was necessary as to include as I have thought of how to include pavilions with the freedom to move into any direction within a restricted area. However, I thought these pavilions from my research were interesting because they are what I would imagine restricted shapes, but they are freely placed together. This means that a square is restricted by its corners however when multiple squares are placed together in a random order it almost looks like they have the freedom to move by themselves. I found this interesting and therefore wanted to create a models to represent this and experiment with the options my theme gives me.

Pavillion design

The Citroen building also known as the C42 is a showroom constructed from red and white steel and glass. The theme behind the building is futuristic modernisation in order to embody the company's innovation. I feel like this building also represents the theme of freedom and restriction as the design looks like it is about to overflow onto the streets or like it's about to expand but it is restricted by the neighbouring buildings.

The museum showcases contemporary art which is a form of expression. Contemporary art can be quite freeing as the interpretation of this art has no boundaries. However the walls of the museum keep the freedom restricted within the building

Pavillion design

Part of my theme is freedom and just like in the image below the pavilion looks like a ribbon which has just fallen into line, and someone made it into an awesome design. This inspired me to therefore, give a non-living object control of my design. Giving it the freedom to fall into place. As a result, I took a broken ballpoint pen and let the ink flow as I glided my hand over the page. This formed the first abstract image above. From there I took the main components and sketched them out and then rounded off all the lines. This is an important part to my design as it allows me to consider creativity apart from research within the design process to lead me to my final ideas.

Housing Shops Schools Site Station

This slide shows a close up map around my site. The sites position is beneficial as there are at least three schools in the area, which makes it easily accessible. In addition, not many youth centres are on the main road whereas this site is. This makes the youth centre visible to the public and attendees can easily reach shops which are just across the road or on the same row of buildings which is a benefit as it gives them the freedom of choice to either eat out or eat at the youth centre, keeping their options open and giving them trust.

The site is also on the same road as multiple houses and is very close to homes in general. As a result, students who live in the area but not necessarily study within this area can also attend the youth centre.

However, the shape of the site is restraining and therefore can't fit a big facility. This means that options for classes and activities are limited and as a result not a lot of activities that may bring interest can be held here.
