Maserati - Polo Tournament Sotogrande

T

he 45th International Tournament at the Santa Maria Polo Club in Sotogrande took place in August, and Maserati took centre stage as it made its debut as the Official Car of the Tournament as well as the title sponsor of the Bronze Cup.

Dubai Polo Team’s patron Rashid Albwardy, together with Santiago Stirling, Alejo Taranco and Adolfo Cambiaso, the best polo player in the world, dominated the match from start to finish, achieving a well-deserved victory over Lechuza Caracas, the team owned by Venezuelan entrepreneur Victor Vargas.

The International Polo Tournament of Sotogrande is the third event of the Grand Slam circuit, and its highly competitive nature attracts the best players and teams in the world. Last year over 88,000 visitors attended the event, which is regarded both nationally and internationally as one of the largest of its kind, as well as a firm social fixture in the Spanish Summer calendar.

A host of celebrities watched the high octane match from the Maserati VIP terrace, including the Spanish top model Nieves Alvarez that arrived at the Santa Maria Polo Club in a brand new Maserati Levante SUV. Looking stunning in a coral dress by designer Charo Ruiz, wearing Bulgari jewels and Aquazzura sandals, she said after the game: “I’m delighted to be here in Sotogrande to hand over the Maserati Bronze Cup. Polo is an exciting sport that combines dedication, passion, power and elegance. The same qualities which can be found in the new Maserati SUV, the Levante, which I’m so excited to drive.”

The opening match saw Dubai Polo Team beat Brunei by 16 to 12, and the Maserati Bronze Cup Final saw Dubai Polo Team winning over Lechuza Caracas by 11 to 7.

Although this is the first polo tournament sponsored by Maserati in Spain, 2016 is the third year of the Maserati Polo Tour: Sotogrande represents the fifth stage of the six planned for this year. The Maserati Polo Tour will end in September in Beijing with the China Open Polo.

Maserati 2016 polo season lasts for nine months, covering three continents and six different time zones.

In Sotogrande Maserati has a strong presence within the different facilities of the Santa Maria Polo Club, with a lounge, two VIP boxes and a Maserati Store. Visitors of the Santa Maria Polo Club may book a test drive of the Maserati range: from the Ghibli executive saloon, to the Quattroporte flagship, as well as the first Maserati SUV, the all new Levante.

Maserati has unveiled exclusively at the Santa Maria Polo Club in Sotogrande, the first Maserati Store in Spain, offering a selection of accessories, clothes and memorabiIia of the historic Italian car manufacturer.

Giulio Pastore, General Manager Maserati Europe, commented: “In the sport of Polo we find elements that we consider of great relevance, since they are a strong part of Maserati’s DNA: Polo means passion, performance, action and pursuit of perfection. Furthermore,this particular Tournament is high octane event that combines sport and fashion in an environment of great elegance, where the attending public shows great affinity with our brand. This is Maserati’s third year in this wonderful sport and Maserati could not miss the opportunity to be a fundamental part of one of the most prestigious events of the Grand Slam circuit”.

INTERVIEW - FASHION DESIGNER

Lisa Lou Berggren You definitely have a unique style, how would you describe it?

Based on contrast: timeless, modern and ancient, simple and complicated, light and heavy, abstract and concrete.

What makes your designs distinctive?

I try to use a highly intuitive approach to the design process. By trusting the transformation of “my way of seeing the world� into the things I create I wish to provide with innovating aesthetics.

Do you have an artist statement?

I aim to strike a fashionable balance between philosophical abstraction and wearability.

When did you realize you wanted to be a designer?

Ever since I was a child I wanted to be an artist, I loved drawing and painting.

As a child my mother and grandmother were sewing and knitting a lot of clothes for me. My mother has always been super interested in fashion and always dressed me in a very special and tasteful way.

I also developed a big interest in clothes, and in my teenage time had a pretty original style. After I finished Upper Secondary School in General Arts Programme I had two years of experience in Milan and London. During this time I started to get more into the direction of continuing studying fashion instead of art.

What is your source of inspiration?

Depends on the project. Questions that occupy my mind, converted to experiments, drawings/collages/illustrations and draping.

How do you typically begin your design process?

Each time is different, but I often have a slow start and I need time to think. I either have a hunch in which the project arises, or I just start creating and see what it wants to tell me; from one of these it all evolves further into a correlation between drawing and draping.

Do your final designs reflect your original idea?

Yes, the base is the original idea; it decides over decisions

throughout the process. Contemporaneously interesting things often happen unexpectedly and those wonders need to gain influence.

Do you have a favourite material to work with?

Sharp, stiff, crispy, light material for the moment, but depending on inspiration and what I want.

Any other materials you would like to explore?

Wool.

Is there an element (or elements) you will never see yourself including in your designs?

Fur.

What motivates you?

To seek to create non-trend based beautiful clothes that touch people.

Are there any fashion trends you never want to see again?

Too many replications of an adjacent past trend which no longer has its original value, because it’s reproduced in another time.

Do you have a favourite designer?

Many and no one.

Is there someone you dream of working with or for?

Rei Kawakubo and Cristóbal Balenciaga.

Do you have a favourite piece amongst your work?

No, I don’t want to judge it, they all say different things of the collection, and sometimes all pieces are needed to communicate “the story”.

Is there a message you wish to communicate with your designs?

Discrete uplifting messages. Remember the history in order to understand the present. Resistance.

Who do you most enjoy designing for?

Everyone who likes my designs and has a critical but open thinking. I don’t like to design after customer profiles.

Who would you most like to see wearing one of your designs?

Everyone who feels happy in them.

Do you have a dream project?

To be able to work with my things and live on it is one of my dreams.

What has been your greatest achievement so far?

To create is an achievement.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

I think I will live in Italy with my family and have my studio there. But who knows, I also want to have courage to let the wind show me the way. I don’t plan too far in advance, I tend to leave doors open. www.lisalouberggren.com

INTERVIEW - ILLUSTRATOR

Fionna Fernandes

When did you realize you wanted to be an illustrator?

I realized I wanted to be an illustrator while studying Visual Communications at University. Through my course, I learnt about illustration, where all my electives were illustration related. Ever since, I have been motivated to draw everyday and develop my visual style.

What drew you to illustration specifically?

I was drawn to illustration, since I wanted to make a living doing what I love. I have always aspired to see my work published in books and magazines. I liked the idea of working for many different clients and brands, constantly learning new things with every job at hand. Being my own boss and setting my own working hours appealed to me as well!

Where do you tend to get your inspiration?

My main sources of inspiration include: Childhood influences like Lisa Frank, Super Mario and My Little Pony; 90’s cartoons, fashion and graphics; Disney films and characters; Japanese culture, particularly kawaii (cute) clothing, food and toys; Fashion labels such as Lazy Oaf, Spangled and Skinnydip London; Other illustrators including Laura Callaghan, Hattie Stewart and Kelly Thompson; Instagram, where I follow the work of artists, brands and fashion bloggers I like; and Pinterest, where I gather images of fashion, nature, and art that I enjoy.

How would you describe your style?

My visual style is playful, fun and energetic. My style is

unique through my use of vibrant colour combinations and expressive mark making patterns. There is a youthful flavour to my aesthetic.

What does colour mean to you?

To me, colour is fun and expressive. It allows me to create vibrant and energetic illustrations. Through multiple colours, I am able to convey joyful and upbeat emotions in my work.

How would you describe your creative process?

I initially begin with a mock-up image in Photoshop to help me visualize a composition. I produce a refined sketch based on this. I use an Artline pen for my line work, and acrylic paint for the light-hearted pattern backgrounds. I scan in the line work and background patterns onto the computer. I use Adobe Photoshop to add colour, shading and distinctive highlights, as well as combine digital and hand generated elements.

What is your favourite medium to work with?

My favourite medium is Adobe Photoshop. I have fond memories experimenting with Photoshop during visual arts in high school. I would look up online tutorials to try and develop my skills and knowledge of the program everyday. My passion for creating really took off when I discovered Photoshop.

Are there any other techniques or materials you would like to explore in the future?

I would like to create work that combines illustration and photography, similar to Hattie Stewart. I would love to collaborate with a photographer to achieve this. I think my illustrations that experiment with sticker icons would work particularly well with photography.

Is there a reason for you illustrating mostly women?

I love drawing attention to certain aspects of the female face, particularly the eyes, lips and hair. Through my work I

like to depict women as confident and bold. I see all women as beautiful and enjoy portraying girls from different cultural backgrounds.

What keeps you motivated?

I am often motivated to illustrate as I genuinely enjoy drawing. However, I am grateful for how many people follow and like what I do on Instagram, as it encourages me to create illustrations on a weekly basis.

Can you tell us about your paper sculptures?

I created paper bird sculptures for a university assignment that required us to experiment with three-dimensional illustration. My tutor and peers loved the series. I submitted the designs to the Australian Design Biennale 2014, where I was selected as a finalist in the “Student Illustration” Category. It was great to receive recognition for my creative work on a national scale.

What do you think it is about illustration that appeals to people?

I think illustration appeals to people since it has the ability to communicate ideas in a fun, fresh and exciting way. Illustrations are also able to provide entities and brands with greater style, individuality and character.

Do you have a one favourite illustration amongst your work?

My favourite illustration is “Candy Pink”, a portrait of a girl with pink hair and freckles. I am particularly fond of this image because it was the first time I experimented with multiple pastel colours. The colour scheme and patterns remind me of My Little Pony and jellybeans. The girl’s gaze is also very fixating.

What do you feel has been your biggest achievement so far?

I feel my biggest achievement so far is being an illustrator represented by Illustration Ltd. It is a great honour to be on a roster with an exceptionally broad and diverse range of leading contemporary artists.

Do you have a favourite artist (illustrator or otherwise)?

My favourite artist is Laura Callaghan. Laura Callaghan’s work is incredibly detailed, super colourful, and lady oriented. Her female characters are beautiful, inspiring me to illustrate women with individuality.

What do you think sets your illustrations apart from others?

My illustrations are unique through the hand-generated line work and background patterns. I feel my illustrations would look artificial and computerized without this.

What would you be doing if you weren’t an illustrator?

If I weren’t an illustrator, I would be a graphic designer since I studied Visual Communications. If I chose another field, I may have become a veterinary nurse. I am very passionate about animals. My family has 2 cats, 2 dogs, a bird and many fishes!

If you had the chance to work in any other city in the world, where would you go and why?

I would like to work in the UK, since many of my favourite fashion brands are based there and I would love to collaborate with them. I also dream to work in the US, to possibly work with Lisa Frank and Disney.

Do you have any advice for aspiring illustrators?

Practice drawing whenever possible to constantly develop your visual style.

Never give up on your dream, keep trying to work towards it.

It takes a lot of patience, practice and passion. If you work hard enough you will be able to achieve it.

What are your goals for the next 5 years in your career?

In the future, I would like to set up an online store where I can sell prints and merchandise of my work. I would also like to have a greater presence in countries other than Australia, particularly the UK, US and Japan. I hope to gain a larger social media following to expand my audience. Maserati - Multi 70 Trimaran

T

he 2016 season started on something of a high note for Giovanni Soldini and his partners with the move from their previous monohull to the new Maserati Multi70 trimaran. This faster, more modern craft will allow Soldini and his crew to tackle new records and compete in prestige competitions of the likes of the Rolex Middle Sea Race in October and the RORC Transatlantic Race in November.

Flanking Giovanni Soldini this new season are Maserati, returning as main sponsor for the fifth consecutive year, and UnipolSai Assicurazioni which will be playing a more prominent sponsorship role in the project than last season. Also renewing their support as official challenge suppliers are: Ermenegildo Zegna for clothing and Boero Bartolomeo S.P.A. which supplies hull paint and enamels.

After an extremely busy and satisfying three years that saw them clock up an impressive number of nautical miles with the monohull Maserati VOR70, Soldini and his team will henceforth be sailing aboard Maserati Multi70, a cuttingedge, very high performance trimaran capable of making extremely fast speeds. Stretching 21.2 metres in length and 16.8 in the beam with a 29-metre mast, Maserati Multi70 can rise up off the water on her rudders and foils, significantly reducing her wetted surface area to the benefit of performance.

Three challenges are scheduled for this season: a MonacoPorto Cervo record attempt, the Rolex Middle Sea Race and the RORC Transatlantic Race. In September, Maserati Multi70 will attempt to set a new multi reference time between Monaco and Porto Cervo, a 195-nautical mile route.

The second challenge of the season is also the most important as the Rolex Middle Sea Race is one of the great classic offshore races. Launched in 1968 and now on its 37th outing, it has attracted some of the leading names in international sailing over the years. The 608-nautical mile route starts and finishes from Malta and involves an anticlockwise circumnavigation of Sicily with the Aeolian Islands, the Egadi Islands, Pantelleria and Lampedusa to port of the fleet.

Maserati Multi70’s third and final challenge of the year is the RORC Transatlantic Race, which starts from Lanzarote in the Canaries on November 26 and also marks her ocean debut. The fleet will cross the finish-line at Grenada in the Caribbean after around 3,000 nautical miles of sailing.

ach year the Grande Maison gets more involved with the world of cinema. This September, Jaeger-LeCoultre celebrated its fifth year as sponsor of the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s affinity with cinema is all about two worlds infused with the same creative effervescence, inspired by a longstanding tradition and the quest for absolute excellence.

Fine Watchmaking and cinema share common values: both create dreams and a sense of fascination through aesthetic

and technical mastery. Jaeger-LeCoultre bases its talent on its numerous watchmakers and craftsmen to create exceptional products, just as the creation of unique cinematic works depends on writers, directors, filmmakers, actors, and technicians. These are two worlds sharing the same creative genius.

This year, the Grande Maison is strengthening its relationship with the festival by presenting the “Jaeger-LeCoultre Latin Cinema” award to an important Latin American filmmaker. This inaugural edition of the award was given to the actor, director, and producer Gael Garcia Bernal. The award was presented during the gala dinner by Jaeger-LeCoultre

International communication Director, Laurent Vinay. The film Neruda, directed by Pablo Larraín, in which Gael Garcia Bernal co-stars, is part of the Pearls section of the festival, and was presented after the award ceremony.

Among the more than 200 guests, numerous personalities related to the world of cinema were seen in the JaegerLeCoultre VIP Lounge, among which were found Carolina Adriana Herrera, Paco Arango, actors Gael Garcia Bernal and Jose Coronado and actress Marta Etura.

Jaeger-LeCoultre is particularly supportive of those who contribute every day to creating and bringing life to the art of

filmmaking, and attaches great importance to the preservation of its heritage.

Since April 2013, as part of the actions of the “Film Society of Lincoln Center” in New York, Jaeger-LeCoultre has launched the Filmmaker in Residence program, an initiative which supports a filmmaker in the realisation of his or her future projects. On the occasion of the Shanghai International Film Festival, Jaeger-LeCoultre is working to protect Chinese cinematographic heritage by funding the restoration of old movies.
