Independent Financial Advisor... will follow about the benefits of diversification, asset classes, volatility and the like. Grown up advice In days gone by the man from the Pru or the Co-op would come round once a month and collect the premiums for the house insurance and every so often he would try and sell you a savings plan or a bit of life insurance. He’d have the application in his brief case and the only criteria was you could pay the premium and hold the pen to sign, usually at the kitchen table. Now the industry has grown up a bit, moved on, we even call ourselves Financial Advisors or Wealth Managers now or other such fancy titles and in truth what we do is very different. A good advisor will talk to you for quite a long time about what you want, what lifestyle you want for yourself and your family, when you want to retire and what you want to do in retirement. They will ask a lot of questions and listen more and take a lot of notes on your current circumstances and existing arrangements. They will talk about risk with investments and usually complete some sort of risk assessment with you. Much talk and explanation

Then they will go away to review your existing plans and design a plan to help you meet your dreams and protect your family’s financial future. They will recommend plans and investments to do this and talk you through all the main points before asking you to sign up, it may still at the kitchen table of course. If you are in the market for financial advice you should always understand some key points. - Can you work with the adviser on a long term basis? Is this someone you feel comfortable working with over many years to look after your finances? - How much is it going to cost me? Make sure they are very clear and transparent about the charges, if not be suspicious. If they say it’s all taken care of in the plan charges show them the door. - Ask them if they are

independent if they can’t give an unequivocal yes walk away. Many advisers are now Restricted, they advise on a limited range of products pre-selected for them and not always because they are the best but sometimes because the provider has paid to be on the list. Only an independent financial adviser is able to select the right product and investment from the whole of the market for your circumstances and needs. - What qualifications do they have? They must have at least a Diploma qualification and may be Chartered which is the next level up. Some may also have specialist qualifications in certain areas. Again no diploma no good. The way financial advice is delivered has moved from the man from the Pru. Follow these basic rules and you will be on your way to making sure the advice you get has moved on as well.

Butler Evans… How to improve cashflow and reduce credit risk in Accountants and Solicitors practices Improving cashflow and managing credit risk are two key tools to strengthen financial resilience and create opportunity for growth. Fee Solutions is a new breed of product that allows Professional Practices to receive 100% of their invoiced funds within 14 days. Creeping debt: One of the other problems we often see in firms without systematic Credit Risk Management is a gradual accumulation of debt from a single source. This can lead to a reactionary effort to call in the debts and may even force the customer into financial problems that result in a serious bad debt scenario. Existing solutions are not fit for purpose: Go to your Bank and ask for help managing your credit risk and they will happily sell you an invoice discounting or factoring product. Great for the bank as your firm pays between 5% and 15% of your invoiced fees to the bank and you still have the credit risk as the bank has Charges over your assets in case a client does not pay! If you look to protect this credit risk then the bank rolls out the Credit Insurance product, which is often inflexible and takes your whole book of customers, not just those that really expose your firm, at a large insurance premium cost. How to become a salesman or saleswoman When I work with people who are about to start a new business, or who are trying to grow and develop an existing one, they often highlight selling as one of their weakspots. They know their products or services inside-out but often have never had to go through the process of selling them to customers. And selling comes with a bit of bad reputation. Ask someone to fill in the blank space in the phrase “---------- Salesman” and they will usually put in words like Pushy, Aggressive, Double Glazing or Used Car. We tend to associate selling with the bad experiences we may have had in the past. So it is useful to start with by reframing exactly what it is that we mean by selling. The definition which I like to use is that Selling = Helping people to make good choices. Begin to think of it in those terms, and it starts to look like a far more positive process, and also one that most people are already well equipped to perform. Business owners, as I already said, tend to know their products or services inside-out so providing customers with the information that they need to make good buying choices shouldn’t be too hard. So, how does the selling

process start? It’s easy to think that it should begin with the sales person launching into a lengthy bit of sales patter, pouring out all of the details about their products that they think their customers need to know. Now, I don’t know about you, but I find that a complete turn off. So let’s turn it on its head. The first thing that a good salesperson will do is to LISTEN. Try asking questions about what it is they are looking for from a product like yours. What are their specific requirements? How do they plan to use it? What features are important to them? Listen to what they say, then you know the information that they need from you. Remember, we were given two ears and one mouth so let’s try using them in that proportion. Then focus what you say on addressing their needs. If you are a painter and decorator and your customer’s biggest worry is about whether you will leave any mess, then tell them what you will do to cover up the floors and furniture, how you’ll clean up at the end of each day and so on. Customers will let you know how much technical detail you need to pass on to them about your product or service. And often that will be a lot less than you might have expected, so don’t bore them with detailsthey don’t need. Don’t forget , though, to tell them about the benefits of using your service. People don’t hire gardeners based on how well equipped they are, or what methods they use to do their work. They hire them so that their gardens will look great, and to save themselves the time of doing it themselves. So a gardener who is good at selling will talk to customers about how great

their garden will look after they have worked on it, about how much easier it will be for the customer, and about the time they will have to spare now. So, being a salesperson isn’t complicated. We just need to be able to put ourselves in the position of the customer and think “What is it that they need to know?”, “How can I help them to make a good purchase?” Get that right and customers will enjoy doing business with you.

Those brave souls gave their lives. Had they not done so many of the freedoms and you and I take for granted – like the right to vote would not be available to us. I personally think that anyone who does not vote is insulting the memories of those who gave their lives. In today’s culture it’s very easy to forget the ultimate sacrifice each and every one of these brave souls made for us. Sometimes when you read the newspapers you see articles criticising government policy. We have the right to vote. We have to right to choose our religion, we have the right to a private life and who to marry. In the UK you can do this. In many countries across the world you can’t. Consider

yourself lucky. Had these people not make the ultimate sacrifice you wouldn’t have these rights. Today we are fighting a bigger war, one that will no doubt lead to more deaths than the great wars combined. The enemy is of the worst kind. Its silent, it’s invisible, it’s all around us and acts so slowly over time that we don’t notice it’s there. It doesn’t discriminate; it kills people of every race, religion, colour or creed. Yet when it strikes it’s too late and all too often the side damage is irreversible. It is so powerful that it once it presents it can thwart any attempt to do anything about it. This enemy is so deadly, so strong and has so many powerful allies that now one in three children die before their parents because of it. That number is rising all the time. If left to its own devices it will decimate the human race. You are probably wondering what it is. It’s obesity. The war against obesity is a war we all need to play an active role in stopping. However obesity has some extremely powerful allies. Starvation and obesity have the same common cause- poverty. Poverty is the number one cause of obesity. I’ve been saying this for years but it’s only to come to light very recently. Low quality high fat food is mass produced and cheap- those on lower incomes can’t afford it. Many on low incomes cannot afford to eat more than twice per day. If

Movie Previews It’s officially autumn. The leaves have all but turned and there is a definite chill in the air now. But, there’s always the cinema to escape to from the dreary weather. Let’s see what’s on offer this month.

Coming Soon… Dolphin Tale 2 Dolphin Tale 2 is a continuation of the true story we were first introduced to back in 2011 with the plight of deformed dolphin, ‘Winter’. In this sequel we see that Winter is doing well until she becomes lonely and begins to suffer because of it. Those who work at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium are still working hard to ‘Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release’ those that are able to. This includes an injured dolphin named Mandy and a sea turtle named Mavis. When an inspector comes and sees the condition Winter is now in, he issues them with a violation and gives

them 30 days to find her a mate or she will be removed to a marine park in Texas. All hopes seem to be lost until a call comes in about an injured female juvenile dolphin that has just been rescued. As everything lies on the two dolphins getting along, they name the dolphin, Hope. Reprising their roles from the first film is ), Ashley Harry Connick Jr ( Judd ( ), Nathan Gamble ( ) and Cozi Zuehlsdorff ( ). Although this is yet another sequel, the heart-warming story of the lives of these dolphins is worth a watch and the kids will enjoy it as well.

Based on the 2012 novel of the same name, this is a mystery thriller that will keep you guessing all the way through. The author of the novel, Gillian Flynn has also written the screenplay for the film. She has stated that the film will deviate from the novel, as its story will be structured differently. So those who have read the book should still find the dramatization of it enjoyable. The story follows the suspected turbulent marriage of Nick and Amy Dunne (Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike). On the day of their 5th wedding anniversary, Amy goes missing. At first there is an all out search for her but as the investigation goes on; Nick starts to become a likely suspect. He seems unemotional in front of the cameras and journal entries of Amy’s reveal their marriage wasn’t as solid as thought by

others and that Amy began to grow scared of Nick. We see both sides to the mystery but never quite sure who to believe. Anyone who is a fan of suspense thrillers or think themselves a mystery boffin should definitely go and see this film. The Best Of Me Another film that comes from a novel although this one is a little lighter hearted. The book was written by none other than Nicholas Sparks who’s other novels have been made into big films over the years, these include; The Notebook, Dear John, The Last Song and Safe Haven to name a few. This story is about Dawson Cole and Amanda Collier. In high school Dawson is the kid from the wrong side of the street and Amanda is one of the rich kids. So we start to see a Romeo and Juliet sort of vibe right from the start, especially when they are told not to see each other but then secretly carry on their

relationship. After falling in love and being together for a while, Dawson is forced to end the relationship. The next thing we know its 20 years later and when an old friend’s death means Dawson returns to his home town for the funeral, it also means seeing the girl he loved all those years ago. When they see each other again it is clear the feelings they once had never went away. But with them both leading such separate lives for so long, does their love still stand a chance? Taking the lead roles are James Marsden (27 dresses, The Notebook) and Michelle Monaghan (Made of Honour, Source Code). I’m sure any fan of Sparks’ previous works will love this story as they did with the others. Although if films like The Notebook isn’t your thing, maybe give this one a miss.

John’s Plants Now is the time to finish planting spring bulbs such as narcissi and crocuses - tulips can wait until November. Choose plump firm bulbs and plant in a location with good drainage. Add grit if the soil is heavy and ensure your pots and containers have plenty of good drainage. Bury bulbs at three times their own depth, tip upwards and make sure there are no air pockets around the bulbs. For a natural look, throw handfuls of bulbs in the air and plant them where they land. Some great varieties to narcissi to Grow include scented varieties Sir Winston Churchill, Repete, early cheer, bridal crown and Tete a Tete is a good all round dwarf type, all these are suitable for either pots or the garden. Eye catching tulips include Abu Hassan, China pink, Happy generation and spring green. Plant new shrubs and perennials - while the soil is still relatively moist and warm, plant them so their roots have a chance to become established before winter. Divide herbaceous perennials such as daylilies , geraniums and rhubarb, Cut them back and divide large clumps by lifting carefully and separating down the centre with 2 forks back to back. Replant with plenty of compost and water generously. Cut back perennials that have died

down - do not cut back the less hardy perennials such as penstemoms and hardy fuchsias - leave until they begin to shoot from the base in spring. Lift and bring tender perennials inside before frosts cause any damage. Support tall flowers - autumn can be windy so make sure any tall flowers are supported. Plant winter bedding and spring bulbs in your pots, containers borders and hanging baskets now. Winter colour comes in all shapes and sizes; mini cyclamen (these will only tolerate light frosts) heathers, dwarf conifers,variegated box, pansies, violas and trailing ivies all make good displays, bare rooted wallflowers are now available and add great winter colour to borders, two good varieties are Persian carpet and Tom Thumb (a dwarf variety). Move any tender plants under cover before the cold sets in (if possible allow them to dry out partially before lifting them). If you want one of the true hardy cyclamen this is hederifolium and comes in a variety of colours and will naturalise into large drifts. It's important to lift containers that will be left outside off the ground to ensure good drainage and to protect against frost damage. This month is probably the best time to plant new shrubs trees and hedging either pot grown or bare rooted before the harsh frosts arrive,

Kay’s Top 10 Networking Tips… Networking is an effective and inexpensive method to market your business. I do a lot of Networking both online and at local Networking Events. These 10 tips have been put together through suggestions given at The Firm Does Chessy Lunch Meeting. 1) This is my number one tip – if you have took the time out of your working day and turned up to a networking meeting you need to be giving your card to potential contacts and taking cards in return from them. Just ask yourself how will your potential contact get in touch with you if you don’t leave them your business details? 2) Yes everyone is there for the same reason ‘to sell’ but just keep in mind that people buy from people they know and trust. So you might not get a sale at the first meeting but it takes time to build trust and knowledge about someone before they can refer you with confidence. 3)

everyone at the meeting know who you are and what your business offers. Your elevator pitch should include; your name, your business name, what service/product you provide, the benefits of using your service/product, what type of contacts you’re looking for, your businesses USP (Unique Selling Point) and a Strap Line. Don’t forget everyone was nervous once, it just takes practice!

Also you can then listen for if there is an opportunity for you to help them through your business.

Keep in mind when networking that it is not just the people on the room that are important but who they know as well. You might not think someone is a very good contact for you but they may know your perfect client and can’t refer them to you if they don’t know what you do. 5) Think about how you can help the people you meet with their business. If you help them they are more likely to want to refer or use your service in the future. 6)

Seems pretty basic I know but a friendly face makes you easier to approach by new networkers. 9) People have come to network so go and introduce you self and ask about their business etc. They are a great potential new contact for your business. 10) Look the part and leave your comfortable baggy clothes at home. Looking professional is the best first impression you can give.
