DIRECTOR’s cut……
HELLOOOO to you all…….It’s been a while since our last newsletter but the struggling to find something to talk about is hopefully over! Following our Officers meeting last week I am feeling very positive about the rest of the year and have everything crossed hoping that lockdown will soon be a memory…… Looking forward our Road Captains will all take at least one Chapter Ride each in the coming months and of course we will continue with our regular Wednesday evening and Sunday ride outs - these subject only to bad weather and Road Captain availability. Rich our Lead Road Captain and Simon our Assistant Director ensure that we plan and execute our regular ride commitments and our Road Captains take rides when they are available - Bryan, Jean, Mick, Derek, Rick, Paula, Adam & Manoj. If you have a particular destination, anything you would particularly like to do or have included at any point in the year please do approach one of the
Officers, we make decisions collectively and most of us are house trained and don’t bite! If you haven’t joined us on a ride yet pop along for a friendly fun ride out. Look out for our regular updates re ride outs on our Facebook pages, the website www.chromehill.co.uk and our messenger ‘ride outs’ group (not a member of our messenger group let me know and I will add you) these give you up to date info on what's coming up each week and notification of any last minute cancellations / plans. Planning for our second Chapter weekend for 2021 is underway and an email will go out shortly. Rich and Eddie are sorting a fantastic route and Andrea & Manoj will be liasing re our accommodation; with good food and a bar top of the list of priorities! Should lock down interfere with our plans we will push the weekend forward until such time as we are able to do it. We hope to see you on this one or at some point in the year. Membership was growing steadily last year and I look forward to meeting our newer members and riding with you throughout the rest of the year so a huge welcome and if I haven’t met you yet I look forward to doing so in the near future and hope that you will interact with me by sending anything you think might be of interest to your fellow members be it places you have visited (pictures essential please), kit or gadgets you think are great or particularly useful, a test ride you may have taken and in fact anything bike related really! It’s doubtful Rich and I will manage to make all the socials and ride outs so essential that you all
take great pics and send me updates so that I can pass on to all our members. I’d just like to mention how amazing it looks to be following you all on our ride outs and you all have on your cuts with our Chapter name and in the main the motorhead logo. It looks fantastic and is a great advertisement for our Chapter. If you haven’t got your cut yet, please visit Jayne at Spire Leathers in Matlock Bath (just up the road from Kostas) she has a great selection of cuts men's and women’s in all sizes. Then contact me for your back patches which I have on order. Officer Roles. We do have some officer positions available Photographer, Editor & Safety Officer so if you would like to become more involved with the Chapter and have some spare time and the inclination to help us grow and run the Chapter then please do message / email me to discuss. Membership Renewal Your renewal was due from 1st April and runs to 31st March 2022. If you haven’t managed to renew as yet please visit the our website www.chromehill.co.uk and use the online form to renew then bank transfer your payment of £20 to Chrome Hill, sort code 09 01 29 account number 49705865. My name is Sid and I am the newly appointed PR Officer for Chrome Hill, i joined the Chapter last June 2020 and have very much enjoyed the great company of all the Chapter Members. I am also impressed with the Director & Road Captains for their professional approach to organising rides; the routes are excellent bearing in mind they are in keeping within the current Covid restrictions. I am looking forward to promoting the Chapter moving forward using my Officer role which I take very seriously and with pride, to expand the Chapter membership, but also ensure the existing members are getting the best service from the Chapter as well as encouraging the Dealership to support us with the best deals for us. Regards,
Sid PR Officer
Hi, my name is Andrea and my hubbie and I have been members of Chrome Hill Chapter for just over a year now and have recently renewed our membership. In all honesty I can see this being something we do for many years to come. Scott has a Road King Special and although I don’t personally have a Harley Davidson yet (I have a Triumph Bobber, which I take plenty of ribbing for!) never say never. In my eyes I get the best of both worlds, my own bike to ride and as a pillion on the road king, which is great as I get to enjoy some of the spectacular scenery.
I have recently been appointed Activities Officer a role I share with Manoj. Hopefully once lockdown is over we can get some places and events in the calendar. Until then we still have plenty of ride outs and events already planned. Would I recommend people join Chrome Hill…. Yes in a heartbeat. If you want the opportunity to get out on your bike, visit some fabulous places, make new friends, feel part of something and eat plenty of takeaways, get that membership form completed or renewed.

To date we have been on many ride outs and went for a weekend away in Wales. This was our first weekend away on the bike and I can honestly say it was great, very wet but great! Thoroughly enjoyed the journey and spending time with like minded people who have quickly become friends in my eyes. So much so we will be going on the next trip to Wales in a couple of weeks. What is impressive about the ride outs is the way in which

Meet The TEAM……. The motorbike bug never bit me during my earlier life, even though I saw Easy Rider and Electra Glide in Blue as soon as they came to our local Cinema. Don't know what it was but the 'Captain America' chopper left a very enduring impression upon me. That feeling resurfaced once Julie and I started taking family holidays to Florida in the 90's. Visits to dealerships followed but other than the purchase of Tee shirts and Baseball caps I didn't take it further. Hi, My name is Bertie Ratcliffe and I have just been honoured with my first appointment to an officer role within a HOG Chapter (Membership Officer). I came into biking at probably a much later age than most of you did and other than riding a 500cc Honda Yamazuki (no idea what it was) whilst learning to ride, I have always rode a Harley. I grew up with a cousin who was two years older than myself and more mischievous! Unfortunately for me, he got us into all kinds of scrapes but I was the one who always ended up with the cuts and bruises. As soon as he was allowed, he was riding a BSA Bantam and my parents realised that two years down the line I would be badgering them for one. Thinking that I wouldn't survive very long being a novice behind my older cousin they decided to teach me to drive a car. Around that time we moved out of the area so my cousins influence on me declined and I was quite happy driving a car.
Then one fateful day at work I joined a project team for a few months with two guys who both rode to work on Harley's. In the office were photo's and calendar's of Harley's and I'd listen and watch for them arriving and departing each day with more and more envy and longing to be able to do the same. However, I knew that one of them had been riding since age sixteen and presumed the other one had as well. As I was well past middle age by then I thought that I was too old to start learning. That was when I received a big wake up call when one morning one of the office ladies rode into work on a 500cc rice burner. She came through the door with a grin wider than her helmet visor and informed everyone that she had reached 50 years old earlier in the year and wanted to do something 'different' in her life and prove that life really can start at 50. Her daughter was talking about becoming a biker, so she said why not do it together and off they went. Well that did it, if a fifty year old lady could learn then so could I
and a few months later I was on EBay looking for my first bike. With zero experience I bid on and secured a Road King and as I was still learning to ride, took my co-worker with me to collect it and ride it home for me. So there it was, sat waiting for me to pass my test, drive home and jump onto something twice the weight of what I was used to and still a complete novice! Obviously, I survived my first ride outs on the Road King but I never felt comfortable with it, it was as if I was sat on top of it rather than a part of it if you know the feeling. I also never felt confident enough to have Julie on the back so it was a lonely experience in the early days. The Road King was soon exchanged for a more compact Softail Deluxe, which enabled me to gain confidence in riding a lighter, more manoeuvrable bike. Very soon, Julie joined me as pillion and our new adventure began! Little did we know then what a massive impact it was to have upon us and how much our lives were about to change for the better. We were still riding solo at this stage but really enjoyed the camaraderie whilst out and about as wherever we went people would always come over to look at the bike and have a chat. Then, in Spring 2007 whilst in the Doncaster H-D dealership I got chatting to a few people who told me about their local riding group, about the social side of things, group days out etc and invited me to meet up with the St Leger Chapter. Julie and I were soon hooked on this new experience of going off on mystery days out, being taken

Meet The TEAM……. down new roads to cafe's and places that we would never have visited had we been on four wheels. That, I feel is one of the great benefits of being a Chapter member. We get out of the house and do something. We have lost count of the number of times we get back home and say that if it wasn't for the Harley we would have just sat around or found 'busy work' for the day.

So, quite soon we were invited to attend the Iron Horse Rally at Woodhall Spa, which was a very enjoyable weekend except for the ride there and back. Two up plus luggage that had to last us for a whole weekend made the journey difficult. We were still used to taking a car full of things that might come in handy at that stage. The Deluxe had V&H long shotgun exhausts and the last few inches were gradually being ground away on right handers! A decision had to be made, were we happy to stick with single day's out or did we want to go touring (Yes). Having heard tales of peoples fun adventures abroad, that was where we wanted to go next and we realised we would need a different bike to enable us to do so in both comfort and safety. We visited the NEC bike show that year and on the H-D stand was an Ultra Glide. We looked at the panniers and Tour Pak and thought we should be able to squeeze a small kitchen sink in there somewhere. However, with a mere 5,000 miles of motorcycle riding under my belt, I looked at the Ultra and thought...that's a big bike, then I'll be on it, then Julie will be on it, then there will be a small kitchen sink on
it...Wow. Julie being oblivious to these thoughts said, "get on it then and see what you think". So I sat on it and thought it's even bigger up here! Julie said "you look perfect on that". So, we went looking for one. As luck would have it I found a year old, very low mileage Ultra sat waiting for me at Harleyworld the following Spring. I sat on it and again looked perfect (ha ha) so we arranged a test ride. After 100 miles we returned to Harleyworld, me thankful for not dropping it and loosing my £1,000 excess and Julie full of smiles and asking the salesman for a valuation on the Deluxe. Whilst I was doing the deal Julie got chatting to a couple and they said eight of them were going to Belgium for a long weekend the following month and we were welcome to tag along if we could get a berth on the Hull ferry. Well obviously the Deluxe couldn't take us and a small kitchen sink all the way to Belgium so the deal was done on the Ultra and in 2008 off we went on our first foreign tour. Other than hiring a car whilst on holiday, I had never driven abroad and never been on a ferry. We were so thankful that we had four other couples with us that knew the ropes and were experienced foreign travellers. It took the worry out of the journey and allowed us to relax and totally enjoy the experience. Upon our return we decided to join Peak Riders Chapter, soon to embark upon one great adventure after another. Owning a Harley Davidson has enabled us to travel the length and breadth of both Europe and America. Julie and I have been
very fortunate to travel to HOG rallies in Norway, Switzerland, Portugal, Germany and the Czech Republic. We have hired Harley's in the States and ridden from Los Angeles to Daytona Beach, toured around the Canyons of the Mid-Western States, ridden the twisties such as the Tail of the Dragon in the Smokey Mountains, headed down the Mississippi from Nashville to New Orleans and all in the company of like minded people who just get it. Brilliant. That is what joining a Chapter can do for you, but if all you want to do is join in on an occasional ride out for fish and chips on a long hot Summers day, then that is ok too. I joined Chrome Hill because they are first and foremost a riding Chapter. During the riding season there will be a ride out planned for every Sunday and every Wednesday, unless the weather god decides differently. However, if the weather is foul on those days we have been known to do a Wednesday evening on a Thursday and a Sunday on a Saturday. If you like to ride, you will usually have someone to ride with. BUT no one is keeping count and you don't get marked down for not attending. You are welcome to become as involved as you are able or willing to be, just turn up with a smile ( and full tank and an empty bladder please). I look forward to meeting you on a ride out very soon.

Meet The TEAM…….
Hello my name is Adam, my first Harley was an Iron 883. I really love Sportsters, but I found with my Mrs joining me on every ride, it was soon time to upgrade and get something a little more comfortable to ride with a pillion. Paula asked me to describe what I enjoy most about the Chapter and what I personally gain from it, which is an easy question! I first saw an advert for a ride out and went along on my own, a little nervous but everyone immediately welcomed me as if they had known me for years and the ride was great. I often got bored on my own or was unsure where to go, but with Chrome Hill you don't have to think or plan a route, the road captains take care of all that, you can just switch off and enjoy the ride. The rides are safely organised, there is a level of trust and comradery, everyone is happy and there to have a good time, making it a great environment to be in. Combine all that with the sound a pack of Harley's make and hopefully you understand why I ride with Chrome Hill as often as i can!

Whilst the world is slowly but surely easing to a recovery phase from the dreaded C19 virus, i would like to include everyone in my prayers to stay safe and in good spirits... As the activities officer, i deeply regret that very few activities were possible during 2020 although we had planned very well at the start of 2020... However we have started the regular rides and I can see the excitement and enthusiasm in our Chrome Hill Chapter members as we prepare for the various activities and outings we have planned for you in 2021... What we missed out on last year, we intent to conduct this year (all being well). We have our website face lift done making it more user friendly and easy to find… Once the lockdown restrictions are fully lifted by June, we will start the social meetings every month and planned other outdoor sportive activities. As to the out station (international) trips, we will work it out for 2022... What are you waiting for??? *Lets saddle up & start riding!!!* Regards
I've been LOH & Road Captain for a few years now and it would be great to see more ladies included in PR Activities riders, non-riders and pillions. After my first pillion ride ever in 2012, and on a Harley, I knew straight away I wanted to learn to ride and own a HD. After the first lesson I was hooked. The buzz of the challenge will never leave me. I bought an old Yamaha YBR 125 to practice on, then passed my direct access, enabling me to buy my first HD, a HD SuperLow 883 Roadster. After a year I swapped it for my beloved Softail Deluxe, which I still own. I’ve travelled far and wide in the last 5 years in the UK, Europe and USA. Thunder in The Glens Rally, 3000 mile European Tour in 10 days, Northern France Trip, Road Trip in Florida to Key West crossing the famous 7 mile Bridge, as well as attending the regular Chapter Ride Outs, Rallies and Weekends away. I also love solo riding and have plenty of miles under my belt doing those. I just love the freedom out on the bike. There's nothing quite like it. Don’t hesitate to contact me.

The story so far. Aged 14 I bought my first bike a KTM Comet Cross. It was in box and it took me a year to build. At 17 I got my first road bike a Kawasaki KH 125, and I never been without a bike from that day. Since then I’ve had every sort of bike from a Sports Bike to a Supermoto. Seven years ago I had a test ride on my first Harley Davidson and was told that I had two hours to try it out, I was way longer. It was so much fun to ride I knew I had to buy one. Harley’s are a lifestyle my friend said, he’s had every bike going, and never had a T-shirt with the make on, but now he has a Harley Davidson and every T-shirt he owns has a Harley Davidson logo on it . Harley Davidson are a completely different kind of bike that you just want to ride and never stop riding . The loud pipes top it off for me. Here’s to promoting and building our Chapter over the coming months and years.

LOH tip for everyone! Now, if you meet my bike and I, you will see that I love a clean bike. If I am not riding my bike, the next best thing is cleaning my bike-yes, you may laugh but no one else will do it for me! You ae very fortunate if you have someone else who cleans your bike, haha, but as a biker, I really enjoy cleaning my own to perfection-well as close as I can get!!!!.
I am so impressed with Vulcanet wipes which are fantastic- a no water cleaning system for the motorbike (or car), for removing bugs/tar/dirt etc on any part of the bike. The wipe is easy to use without any force or effort followed by using the cloth (enclosed in the lid) which is double sided with a different texture each side. The result-super, shiny (or matt), squeaky clean bike. I looked online this week as I needed to replace. I found a fantastic website, hold back lads, please do not be put off by the namewww.Ladybiker.co.uk The Vulcanet wipes cost only £32 at this site instead of £35 elsewhere (including Amazon), I placed my order, received an instant reply, delivery date tracked and the goods were actually delivered less than 24hrs later. Oh, I forget to mention, no delivery charges, well packaged
and delivered by DPD to the exact hour in the message sent to my phone. I am super impressed by the efficiency of this company and highly recommend. Now for the ladies- I love all my Harley Davidson jackets, trousers, waistcoats, T-shirt’s, boots, gloves, waterproofs and all accessories, but if you don’t find the right fit, take a look at the above site. Happy shopping,
Jean

The NEW ‘Pan America’
10
LOH Food for thought! Do not get me wrong, I love my Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe, so much so that I have not replaced it since buying in 2014, despite there being an updated lighter /redesigned model which has since been discontinued. However, having test ridden the ‘Livewire’, which I loved for the response, light weight bike, easy ride, but personally it did not suit me from a riding position point of view and distance of mileage travel before needing a rechargegreat for commuters, but not required for my needs. After watching ‘The long way up’ featuring Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman, riding HD adapted electric bikes, I have been intrigued and eagerly
anticipating to see the newly released Pan America. The bike is an adventure bike, an off roader/road bike but a totally different design to any other HD bike. It competes with all the top adventure bikes and you get loads of extras as standard (including heated handlebars). The seat height could be an issue at 35.2inch/ 895mm for some riders, but there is an alternative Pan America special edition that includes Adaptive Ride Height System for not much more money. I have read a lot of info on this bike and understand that upon stopping, the seat automatically lowers( 2in) then raises back to riding position when the rider sets off. As an adventure bike, it is also much lighter than the cruisers.
Currently, the bike is touring different UK dealerships for customers to see and climb aboard but not yet available to test ride. I believe that early June is the expected date at Harleyworld for the demo bike. Cannot wait! Check out www.harleydavidson.com In fact I can now confirm that the demo Pan America is now at Harleyworld and will be availble to book for test ride! Mine is booked I’ll check in with you next time with my update.

HOG: Some of Your Questions Answered How many HOG chapters are there? Currently, there are more than 1,400 official H.O.G. chapters around the world, with each chapter sponsored by an authorized Harley-Davidson® dealership. What is a HOG card? The Harley-Davidson team's mascot was a small pig, which they would take around the track with them on victory laps. Weishaar was particularly fond of it, and many photographs exist of him and the pig. It is because of this mascot that Harley-Davidson motorcycles are called "hogs." Do HOG members get discounts? Any discount that a dealer gives, if they give any, depends on the dealer. Some give no discount at all. Some give only to members of their local HOG chapter. Some give a discount to any National HOG member. How do I renew my HOG membership? HOG membership must be current. You will be sent renewal information when due for renewal New memberships and renewal memberships must: pay the prescribed dues; provide evidence of national H.O.G. ... and submit a properly completed Chapter Membership Application each year.
How much is a HOG membership? Full £55 Associate £35 Associate members receive some – but not all – benefits that full members receive. This includes the H.O.G. card, pin and patch, and access to events and local chapters. Why do they call Harleys hogs?
When did Harley Owners Group start? 1983 Harley Owners Group/Founded How many HOG members are there?
There are about one million members around the world. Additionally, there are about 680 chapters in the U.S. and, at last count, over 700 chapters in faraway places; countries where you might not expect to hear the rumble of a Harley—100 countries in all.27 Nov 2013 Was Harley Davidson a real person? In 1903 the four men formed the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, which they operated out of a small shed in the Davidson family's backyard. Harley's name was given top billing because he was credited with coming up with the original idea for a motorcycle. Where did the term hog for a motorcycle come from? Over time, the nickname “Harley Hogs” changed into simply “hogs” and became a popular slang term for the beloved Harley Davidson motorcycle. In 1983, the Motor Company decided to take advantage of this longstanding nickname and they turned the nickname into an acronym for their group, the Harley Owners Group. Are all Harleys called hogs? The name "hog" is synonymous with Harley-Davidson bikes, and though you might expect it to have something to do with their imposing, hulking size (or sound), in reality, the nickname was adopted because Harley racing team member Ray Weishaar owned a piglet, which became the team's mascot.
