I.T. FiX iT Microsoft Ends Support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014! So you are now no longer SAFE!
Some people say that this is a cynical ploy to force you to upgrade your computer systems. Some say that it is reasonable to retire an operating system that is twelve years old, very old in the world of computers. What does it mean for home and business users? No more security updates, bug fixes, driver updates and so on, all of that disappears on April 8, 2014, which poses potential risks for businesses and individuals who plan to stick with XP beyond that date. This means that after that date Microsoft will no longer develop or release security or other updates for Windows XP that guard against viruses, spyware and, intrusion by hackers. You have been warned. With less than seven months from XP's retirement worldwide, one in three PCs still run the stable operating system (OS), give or take. OS usage statistics tend to vary based on a variety of factors. Microsoft estimates around 30% of its small and midsize enterprise (SME) customers still use XP; recent market share data from Net Applications said XP accounts for 37% of PCs around the world. These aren't exactly small numbers. XP has a been a great success, so much so that its
most loyal users have little interest in buying newer versions of Windows nor, in many cases, newer hardware - if it ain't broke why fix it? The introduction of Windows 8 and its totally different feel and appearance, determined by its intended use on touchscreen controlled devices like tablet PCs, has not provided a natural upgrade pathway.

Forget ‘ you can speed on a Sunday as the police don’t reset the cameras to Monday’ 9) Know your cameras. The big yellow Gatso & Truvelo cameras are not the only ones which can catch you. Mobile cameras, average speed cameras and motorway variable speed cameras are sometimes not so visible. Also the Police can use a speed camera anywhere at any time, so in principle there are no ‘safe’ roads. 10) Consider the consequences of speed! For example at 30 MPH you will be above to perform an emergency stop and miss a pedestrian, at 40 MPH in the same scenario you will hit that person at 25-28 MPH possibly killing them. 11) On the motorway a vehicle travelling at 100 MPH will hit a stationary lane of traffic at over 70 MPH, whereas a vehicle travelling at the speed limit would have stopped in time.

businesses no longer rely on retail premises to increase their footfall? Now you can buy something on your phone at a click of a button or you can organise a spending spree in a party format in the comfort of your own home. deliveries on your behalf which can free up time for you to be selling more products and even put deliveries in you room. - The majority of household insurance policies will either charge a premium for stock in the home or they will not cover business stock under a household policy. We offer insurance based on the trade value of your stock ensuring you receive a competitively priced insurance and insurance which is completely separate from your household policy. - We can supply you with a range of business services onsite including mailboxes, pa answering service, faxing, photocopying, printing and shredding. - We can supply you with a range of racking and archive boxes to help you make the most of the space as all of our units are 8ft high.

Contemporary Applications for Mediation in the Workplace I spent many years working in the insurance industry and have been reintroducing myself to former contacts since qualifying as a Commercial Mediator specialising in Workplace issues. I was catching up with an old pal who works in the Interim Finance sector who had just come from a meeting with a group of directors with a very simple funding package that he just could not implement. The cash would be used to cover payment for subcontractors they would need to use to do a lovely big job with a fantastic margin but a couple of Directors were reluctant to go ahead with the plan for reasons that did not stand up to logical scrutiny. Because this was a new piece of work and a potential investment into future new and larger markets the Directors were rightly concerned to ensure they had covered all the angles. Together with their accountant they had put a lot of effort into planning how to protect their own financial interests and that of the company knowing their payment would not be received until the contract was complete. The purpose of the
Written By‌ See advert on Page 18 www.b2b1st.co.uk
interim finance was to ensure payment could be made weekly or monthly to subcontractors without whom the job could not be completed. But that did not satisfy the people blocking the arrangement. All their anxieties became focused on what might happen if their own bankers discovered the plan and felt they were at risk leading to an overdraft facility being recalled that was funding other jobs. These very valid fears were hard to argue against but, they were leading to daily conflicts between certain individuals and all Boardroom conversions were being contaminated. My contact could not argue on behalf of the Directors he supported without appearing biased so I proposed that he offered me as a Boardroom Meeting Facilitator. I have sufficient professional knowledge and experience to understand both the practical and emotional barriers arising in such circumstances so I can usually spot where the blockages are and how to work with the participants to move them out of the way.
Once the conversation was conducted in a formal setting with a neutral third party actively encouraging the pursuit of a solution things quickly moved away from the personalities as I probed them with questions they hadn’t previously asked themselves or each other. It soon became clear to them they had common concerns regarding their own professional lack of experience in dealing with a job of this size in a new market. Once that was vocalised openly the discussion turned into something much more creative and the previously well functioning team were back into making things happen together. It was agreed by all they would employ a suitably experienced Project Manager to oversee the new contract in its entirety leaving them to get on and do what they did best. I love it when a plan comes together. callthemediators@gmail.com for more information about using a Mediator to help you get more out of important meetings. .

Quad Computer Services Having a reliable, robust IT system is a fundamental part of most organisations’ day-to-day workflow. Quad Computer Services Ltd work closely with their clients to ensure problems are avoided by monitoring and advising as systems evolve. They speak a language that everyone can understand, translating fluently from technical jargon to plain English. This enables every one to make good decisions based on a proper understanding of all the information. Quad’s flexibility also allows their clients to be flexible as requirements change. As we all know, the only thing guaranteed in business is change. Quad are also happy to liaise with other third parties to ensure that IT needs are met, where in-house expertise may be lacking or require further support and experience. What happens if things go wrong? IT infrastructure is essential to most businesses, so you need to make sure you have the correct practices and safeguards in place should part of that infrastructure fail. You need the hardware and software which will provide the best resilience for your requirements. Quad can provide a solution that best fits your
organisation and your budget. Using the latest technology, they are able to monitor your system remotely and often fix problems without having to perform a site visit. We can also perform preventative maintenance so that everything continues to run smoothly and reduces the risk of failure. Having a support contract in place will ensure peace of mind knowing that your problem will be evaluated and reviewed within an agreed timescale. What would happen if your PC or server stopped working? Are all your important documents backed-up? Are you 100% sure they can be recovered from the last backup you took? When did you last test it? How quickly do you need to be up and running? Can you get PCs, servers and your network up and running within a timescale that fits your business? Too often, action is only taken after a failure of a piece of hardware. By then, it is too late. No suitable backup strategy is in place and no contingency for hardware has been considered. Quad are frequently called to businesses that have lost months of work (and sometimes everything) because their plan was implemented but never tested. Check what you have in place today, as tomorrow you might need to implement it. A common oversight is that organisations do not have backups off
site. Whilst the office building smoulders, and the fire brigade tell you it will be a week until you can safely get to your fire safe, you’ll wish you had a backup tape stored sa fely at a comp any like Quad.
Adam Quad, understand that different organisations have different requirements when it comes to support. Quad have years of experience and many sites installed, so we can tailor a solution to suit you.
Ian Thanks

Mastermind Group?
Last month I identified 7 good reasons to join a Mastermind Group if you are in self employment. This month I’m going to focus on the first of those 7 in more detail. Becoming a more accomplished and by implication - confident professional is not simply about being in a position to earn more money. There are arguably more important practical things we need to learn about but, it helps to have a well defined set of personal and professional development priorities if our business plan is to show the type of financial returns we want. As a business owner achieving the basics is an obvious priority – we need to earn sufficient income to eat properly, provide a roof over our head, buy clothes and travel widely around our own community. An accompaniment to this is also the ability to invest in our business so we can buy the things that keep it healthy and functioning in order to deliver those very basics. So how do we identify what our priorities will be?
Written By… See advert on Page 48 www.b2b1st.co.uk
It is always easier and quicker to explore things with others who are on a similar journey as they give us the benefit of their own experiences and viewpoints. When we take membership in a Mastermind Group we mix with people of a different sex, age and occupation. This mixture of world of work viewpoints can help us move forward very quickly in our thinking so we learn not to limit our expectations for the business or ourselves. If we work alone and only engage in sales focused networking or attend simple, taster sessions of training we won’t have the type of conversation we regularly need to ensure professional growth. Mastermind groups do not take the place of business advisors, accountants, marketing people, lawyers etc. What is learned in a meeting plays a role in helping us make more effective choices. For example in a recent meeting one member spent time exploring an issue relating to the internal financial systems of the business. In the course of the morning it became obvious the function of the bookkeeper had changed as the company had grown making the financial role more significant. New systems needed to be put in place to ensure improvements to credit control which involved more gathering of information and statistics and by implication the business plan. The presence of an
accountant, an experienced Sales professional and a Coach with a Growth Accelerator qualification meant the members thoughts were soon given more definition and a clear set of action points to follow up with. Mastermind Groups are suitable for the experienced owner manager with aspirations. They are of most value to those predisposed to problem solving. They are discreet and confidential and membership is by invitation only. If you are offered a place it’s because we all value what you have to offer. There are Pod meetings in Chesterfield and South Yorkshire waiting to offer you a guest visit. For more information see our website www.ubuntupods.biz or call Jane 07846 531801 to tell us who you are and what you do. We are currently seeking the following professionals for 2 new Pods: Independent Financial Advisors, HR Consultants, Marketing and PR Consultants, Accountants, Business and Personal Development Coaches. Remember, investing in your self will pay dividends…and we give fast returns.

Health & Fitness
So far I’ve told you of how the obesity crisis will drastically affect small businesses.
So what can you do about it? Well the answer is simple. A lot. If you have a canteen make sure they only serve fresh food which is cooked from fresh ingredients on the day. Make sure your work environment is well organised to reduce the stress that your employees face. It never ceases to amaze me how few businesses employ tickler files- if you don’t know what they are google them! They will save you countless hours. Try to avoid your employees facing sleep deprivation. As well as that
try to ensure that they get frequent rests. I would say every 4 hours they get a 30 minute rest and an hour for lunch. If you are willing let them sit on a gym ball at work. Don’t allow workplace bullying which is a major cause of obesity- set up a zero tolerance policy. Let me give you an example- once two ladies made fun of an overweight woman in my Zumba class. I stopped the class, gave them their money back and barred them- to the applause of everyone else in the group. I once worked for a marketing company and an Afro Caribbean woman knocked over an empty cup of coffee. This guy shouted out something very racist. The supervisor instantly dismissed him. When I was a medical student I had a consultant tell me he didn’t want me to infect his patients with my “p**I diseases”. He didn’t realise a new Afro Caribbean ward sister had started and she banned him off the ward!

Damaging self esteem is a massive contributor to obesity. You may want to do a deal with a local fitness facility for corporate membership or offer your clients a gift on a bootcamp as a prize. The Japanese often have prework fitness classes- have you thought of that? The best thing is to give me a call on 0808 222 1007 and I will do a lunchtime talk on health and fitness- the talk
is free and I promise you it will improve work productivity and your staff will enjoy it.

Movie Previews This year is flying by and we’re finally starting to see some sun. However, as it is Britain, you can always count on the fact there will be a few days where the rain will pour giving you the perfect opportunity to catch a film. Here is what’s on this month.
Coming Soon… 22 Jump Street
We have another sequel on our hands, this time its undercover crime comedy 22 Jump Street. The first film was a remake of a TV show that ran from 1987 until 1991 and starred Johnny Depp in his early days. The premise being that the police formed an undercover unit of younger looking officers to try and tackle youth crime. Updating it for the present day, where the use of older actors for younger roles is nothing new, we get Channing Tatum ( ) and Jonah Hill (
). In the first film the unlikely partners infiltrate a high school to try and stop a dangerous drug spreading getting out. The film managed to do very well even though some were surprised at the casting of Tatum in a comedy role, not his usual forte but he pulled it off and the result was very funny indeed. This time around they have to go undercover at the local college. With frat parties and consumption of alcohol being rife they are sure to get into some strange situations. With the reputation for sequels being inferior to their originals, we’ll have to see if this one lives up to its predecessor.
The Fault in our Stars Originally taken from 2012 novel of the same name, this is the heart breaking tale of what a person can go through when they are dealt a bad hand in life. It follows the narration of 16 year old cancer patient Hazel who is disillusioned with her situation and so is forced by her parents to attend a cancer support group. Through a mutual friend she meets 17 year old Augustus, an ex-basketball player and amputee who is in remission. They share stories of their own experiences with cancer and become closer and closer and soon they fall in love. But Hazel begins to wonder what it will do to Augustus when she's gone
and if it is really worth the heart break. Shailene Woodley stars as Hazel who was recently seen in Divergent and The Descendants. After the success of the novel I'm sure this will do well and it's safe to say you should take a pack of tissues with you to the cinema.

Kay’s Top 10 Networking Tips… Networking is an effective and inexpensive method to market your business. I do a lot of Networking both online and at local Networking Events. These 10 tips have been put together through suggestions given at The Firm Does Chessy Lunch Meeting. 1) This is my number one tip – if you have took the time out of your working day and turned up to a networking meeting you need to be giving your card to potential contacts and taking cards in return from them. Just ask yourself how will your potential contact get in touch with you if you don’t leave them your business details? 2) Yes everyone is there for the same reason ‘to sell’ but just keep in mind that people buy from people they know and trust. So you might not get a sale at the first meeting but it takes time to build trust and knowledge about someone before they can refer you with confidence. 3)
everyone at the meeting know who you are and what your business offers. Your elevator pitch should include; your name, your business name, what service/product you provide, the benefits of using your service/product, what type of contacts you’re looking for, your businesses USP (Unique Selling Point) and a Strap Line. Don’t forget everyone was nervous once, it just takes practice!
Also you can then listen for if there is an opportunity for you to help them through your business.
4)
8)
Keep in mind when networking that it is not just the people on the room that are important but who they know as well. You might not think someone is a very good contact for you but they may know your perfect client and can’t refer them to you if they don’t know what you do. 5) Think about how you can help the people you meet with their business. If you help them they are more likely to want to refer or use your service in the future. 6)
Ask questions about their business and listen to what they say. If you This is one of the best opportunities don’t know what they do how can you will get at networking to let you refer them with confidence?

7) We tend to gravitate to people we know which is great because we need to keep those contacts strong. Just keep in mind that your there to network and meet new potential customers so sit down with new people as well.
Seems pretty basic I know but a friendly face makes you easier to approach by new networkers. 9) People have come to network so go and introduce you self and ask about their business etc. They are a great potential new contact for your business. 10) Look the part and leave your comfortable baggy clothes at home. Looking professional is the best first impression you can give.
Thanks
