Company Pensions... 2014- Time to sort out your Company Pension? We are now nearly 2 years on from when Auto Enrolment pensions, sometimes called Workplace pensions, started and the first companies in reached the date by which they had to provide employees with a pension that met the relevant criteria and qualified as an AE pension. From July those with less than 90 employees started to reach their staging dates and within a year we will be into the final phase for those with less than 50 employees. So you may think you are quite a way off before you need to comply with the legislation but that time will disappear fast.. Before auto enrolment, when employers set up pension schemes on a voluntary basis, providers could generally implement a group pension in as short a time as a week. But our experience so far is proving time and time again that because auto enrolment brings so many other complications and considerations, it can take many months to implement a pension scheme, regardless of its size. How to become a salesman or saleswoman When I work with people who are about to start a new business, or who are trying to grow and develop an existing one, they often highlight selling as one of their weakspots. They know their products or services inside-out but often have never had to go through the process of selling them to customers. And selling comes with a bit of bad reputation. Ask someone to fill in the blank space in the phrase “---------- Salesman” and they will usually put in words like Pushy, Aggressive, Double Glazing or Used Car. We tend to associate selling with the bad experiences we may have had in the past. So it is useful to start with by reframing exactly what it is that we mean by selling. The definition which I like to use is that Selling = Helping people to make good choices. Begin to think of it in those terms, and it starts to look like a far more positive process, and also one that most people are already well equipped to perform. Business owners, as I already said, tend to know their products or services inside-out so providing customers with the information that they need to make good buying choices shouldn’t be too hard. So, how does the selling

www.b2b1st.co.uk

process start? It’s easy to think that it should begin with the sales person launching into a lengthy bit of sales patter, pouring out all of the details about their products that they think their customers need to know. Now, I don’t know about you, but I find that a complete turn off. So let’s turn it on its head. The first thing that a good salesperson will do is to LISTEN. Try asking questions about what it is they are looking for from a product like yours. What are their specific requirements? How do they plan to use it? What features are important to them? Listen to what they say, then you know the information that they need from you. Remember, we were given two ears and one mouth so let’s try using them in that proportion. Then focus what you say on addressing their needs. If you are a painter and decorator and your customer’s biggest worry is about whether you will leave any mess, then tell them what you will do to cover up the floors and furniture, how you’ll clean up at the end of each day and so on. Customers will let you know how much technical detail you need to pass on to them about your product or service. And often that will be a lot less than you might have expected, so don’t bore them with detailsthey don’t need. Don’t forget , though, to tell them about the benefits of using your service. People don’t hire gardeners based on how well equipped they are, or what methods they use to do their work. They hire them so that their gardens will look great, and to save themselves the time of doing it themselves. So a gardener who is good at selling will talk to customers about how great

their garden will look after they have worked on it, about how much easier it will be for the customer, and about the time they will have to spare now. So, being a salesperson isn’t complicated. We just need to be able to put ourselves in the position of the customer and think “What is it that they need to know?”, “How can I help them to make a good purchase?” Get that right and customers will enjoy doing business with you.

Thanks

Paul

pring is definitely in the air with blossom starting to appear on the trees and the sun starting to come out. It makes us all start thinking about where to go on holiday or lazy days sipping a glass of wine in a beer garden with the sun shining down on us. For other people it is the first step to putting our house on the market and making the most of the good weather to show our house in the best possible light. So what happens if you have hoarded those precious family memories and as a result go to market with a cluttered home that no buyer can relate to, or what happens if you secure that all important sale but you have not yet found that dream home? At Armadillo storage we offer a wide range of storage options whether you are looking to store just a few items to de-clutter the house or whether you are looking to store your extra items if there is a gap in between sales. Make up an inventory of your stored items and keep it in a safe place at home. Protect your fragile goods in bubble wrap and tissue paper. Fragile items such as crockery and glasses should be wrapped in paper or bubble wrap before storing—do not use newspaper (the ink stains). Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in bubble wrap, marked fragile and stacked on their end. Wrap table legs with bubble wrap before storing. Use our wardrobe boxes which allow you to store your clothing on hangers in order to keep their shape.

Laughing Ladies To Light The Night… …in local woods Eight fun-loving ladies from south Sheffield are joining a sponsored night walk in October to say thank you to the region’s only cancer hospital. The eight ladies, who became acquainted through their mutual love of dog walking, will step out into Ecclesall Woods on Saturday 4th October to help raise much needed funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. This year, in celebration of its 20th anniversary, the Cancer Charity is hoping that supporters from across the region will join the exciting torch-lit night walk in their neon-brights. As some of the ladies have been personally affected by cancer, and others have had close family and friends who have required the specialist services of Weston Park Hospital, the group members are hoping to shine bright on the night in support of the hospital’s only dedicated charity.

Under the care of Weston Park Hospital consultant, Professor Rob Coleman, Sylvia was offered the chance to go onto a clinical trial called the Anzac Study and subsequently underwent radiotherapy sessions followed by a course of Herceptin. Charity Fundraiser, Sarah Cross, said: “We’re delighted that the ladies can join us in their local woods for this special event on Saturday 4th October and we hope their enthusiasm will encourage others to help us shine bright on the night! “This unique event is perfect for groups and families alike who want to give something back for the wonderful care the region’s cancer patients can benefit from thanks to Weston Park Hospital.”

Who makes the most money out of obesity? Some of you may remember in that movie one man said that whenever

there is a problem someone gets rich. So who gets rich from obesity? Is it the supermarkets; is it the fast food industry? No! It’s the Taxman. Your doctor doesn’t want you to smoke or drink or be overweight. The taxman wants you to eat like a horse, drink like a fish and smoke like a chimney. You’ll say smoking costs the NHS £5 billion a year (1) and that the taxman gets £9.5billion a year in duty. (2). Alcohol related harm overall costs the NHS in England £3.5 billion a year (3) and (4). In 2010 it was reported that

alcohol contributes £14.6bn to the taxman (5). Health problems associated with being overweight or obese cost the NHS more than £5 billion every year (6). In real terms, taking into account minimum wage rises alcohol, unhealthy food and cigarettes are cheaper than ever. The time taken to earn the price of an alcoholic drink has never been so low. It’s simple maths. Now if you smoke, drink and are obese you’ll die sooner, over your lifetime the taxman gets your taxes. The taxman saves your pension of £5881.20 a year if you die early. That doesn’t include other costs e.g. medical treatment. 70% of people don’t have a will (8). The taxman gets your estate as well when you die so it’s more for him 10 million people in the UK are over 65. The latest projections are for 5 million more elderly people by 2034. The number will have nearly doubled to around 19 million by 2050. In 2010/11 pensions cost £100 billion (9). Assuming the

19million are on £113.10 per week its £111742800000 per year in pensions the taxman can save if they die early. Don’t forget there are fewer people paying in now as the birth rate is falling! So what should we do? If I had my way, cigarette and alcohol duty should rise markedly yearly. We should introduce a sugar tax. We should do much more to combat obesity and be financially more prudent on all levels.

If you go on my youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/jam esbondtraining I go into far more detail on this.

So expect lots of drinking and references to the many nights of passion they may or may not have gotten up to.

Deliver Us From Evil Something a little darker now as we have Deliver Us from Evil which follows the life of New York police officer Ralph Sarchie played by Eric Bana ( ) who is struggling with his own personal issues. He begins to investigate a series of disturbing and inexplicable crimes and he meets an

unconventional priest (Edgar Ramirez, Born Ultimatum) who convinces him that the crimes are demonically related. Working together, they have to combat the frightening and demonic possessions that are terrorizing the city. Through this alternative and strange work Ralph can finally work through his personal problems and finally find his path.

The Expendables 3

According to Sylvester Stallone this is the final go around for the action movie with an older vibe to it. It could be because the amount that goes into the production and fight scenes really are too much for them…or its so he can move on to making more Rambo films! Either way, the film that critics originally panned has become a firm fan favourite and we get even more stars for our money in this instalment as the likes of Mel Gibson ( ), Wesley Snipes ( ) and Harrison Ford ( ) join the ranks. For a little something different there are also some younger cast members which includes Kellan Lutz ( ) and the first female expendable Ronda Rousey ( ).

Stonebanks is now making it his mission to bring down the whole team, but Barney has other plans. He decides to fight old blood with new blood and so brings in a new era of Expendables who are younger, faster and more technologically advanced. It’s a clash of old school style and high-tech gadgets in the team’s final battle.

John’s Plants Enjoy your garden ! The most important thing this month is to enjoy your garden; heady scents, bright colours, an abundance of fruits and vegetables and hopefully more sunshine. The two most important jobs this month would be to ensure that your containers and baskets are well watered/ fed and deadheaded, feeding with a high potash feed once a week. Another essential job would be to remove all weeds from your borders as they compete against your plants for moisture. Container grown shrubs and perennials can still be planted throughout August but must be well watered until established, a wide range of both are always available some in flower or bud to give a continuation of summer

colour and fill gaps in borders and containers. its now time to prune wisteria by Shortening all long shoots, which are growing out from the main branches back to five or six pairs of leaves. Give herbs and lavender a light prune after flowering this will keep them compact. prune back all perennials that have already finished flowering,Trimming of perennials and shrubs might also encourage a second flower flush especially hardy geraniums, wiegelia, and roses. In the green house continue to make sure your tomatoes are adequately staked and very well ventilated , if you have around five trusses take out the tip of the plant so there is a good chance of development and allow for ripening before autumn.

www.johnsplants.com

Pests and diseases usually flourish this time of year so take a walk around the garden and inspect for any problems, it is far easier deal with if caught early. One thing to remember is that if you have to spray try and do it late evening when there is less chance of killing bees and other beneficial insects.

Kay’s Top 10 Networking Tips… Networking is an effective and inexpensive method to market your business. I do a lot of Networking both online and at local Networking Events. These 10 tips have been put together through suggestions given at The Firm Does Chessy Lunch Meeting. 1) This is my number one tip – if you have took the time out of your working day and turned up to a networking meeting you need to be giving your card to potential contacts and taking cards in return from them. Just ask yourself how will your potential contact get in touch with you if you don’t leave them your business details? 2) Yes everyone is there for the same reason ‘to sell’ but just keep in mind that people buy from people they know and trust. So you might not get a sale at the first meeting but it takes time to build trust and knowledge about someone before they can refer you with confidence. 3)

everyone at the meeting know who you are and what your business offers. Your elevator pitch should include; your name, your business name, what service/product you provide, the benefits of using your service/product, what type of contacts you’re looking for, your businesses USP (Unique Selling Point) and a Strap Line. Don’t forget everyone was nervous once, it just takes practice!

Also you can then listen for if there is an opportunity for you to help them through your business.

4)

8)

Keep in mind when networking that it is not just the people on the room that are important but who they know as well. You might not think someone is a very good contact for you but they may know your perfect client and can’t refer them to you if they don’t know what you do. 5) Think about how you can help the people you meet with their business. If you help them they are more likely to want to refer or use your service in the future. 6)

Ask questions about their business and listen to what they say. If you This is one of the best opportunities don’t know what they do how can you will get at networking to let you refer them with confidence?

7) We tend to gravitate to people we know which is great because we need to keep those contacts strong. Just keep in mind that your there to network and meet new potential customers so sit down with new people as well.

Seems pretty basic I know but a friendly face makes you easier to approach by new networkers. 9) People have come to network so go and introduce you self and ask about their business etc. They are a great potential new contact for your business. 10) Look the part and leave your comfortable baggy clothes at home. Looking professional is the best first impression you can give.

Thanks
