PETS CORNER - 10 Amazing Dog Facts…
Ten amazing facts about dogs I thought this month we would do some good old amazing facts about your dogs that I have read over recent months. 1. Dogs like to poo in magnetic alignment to the earth! – Not one I have tested yet but apparently dogs are sensitive to the earth’s magnetic field and like to align themselves on the north south magnetic access. So if you dog circles before doing his business maybe he’s just aligning himself! 2. Dogs have 18 muscles in each ear – Dogs have great hearing for their ears are important to them. The 18 muscles help them raise, tilt and rotate their ears to pick up sound. They can also move each ear completely independently of the other. All adding to their ability to hear over four times the distance of humans.
4. Dogs can understand over 100 words – According to tests dogs have a language capacity of around a hundred words. This is equal to about the vocabulary of a 2-3yr old human. Although the intelligence of a dog can be influenced by the tendencies of the breed and in tests border collies always seem to have the highest marks. 5. Dogs can lie – Again in a number of psychology and behaviour tests it has been proven that dogs do learn to lie and deceive. Again certain breeds seem to be better at it with Labradors apparently being the most elaborate deceivers. 6. Dogs have unique finger prints – They are just not on their fingers they are on their noses!
9. Dogs are great for your health – Just by stroking them you can lower your blood pressure by up to ten percent! 10. Dog are proven to detect illness in humans – It has now been proved that dogs can literally smell cancer in humans much earlier than other tests can easily diagnose. They are also used to help epileptics detect when they might be about to have a seizure and by diabetics to smell when insulin levels drop. Finally just to let you know we are now getting very busy for Easter, May and even hotting up for the summer holidays so if you are thinking forward to that welcome warmer holiday break give us a call as soon as you can at Calagran Four Paws Hotel www.cfourpawshotel.co.uk
7. Dogs don’t only see black and white – They can also see on the yellow and blue scale. However, red and blue they will not be able to interpret in the same way as we do so if you are selecting toy yellow and blue are great colour to select!
t month… Until nex
8. Dog are great for dating – According to trials a man is three times more likely 3. Dogs can count & do simple maths – to get a date with a girl if he has It has been proven that dogs can be a dog! taught how to count and indeed how to do simple mathematical calculations beyond one lead plus one coat equals a walk!

Becky’s Movie Previews We’re well into the year now and things are starting to hot up in the cinema. Here’s what will be gracing our cinema screens this month.
Coming Soon…
Furious 7 The build up to the release of this film has more of an emotional side to it as it is the last performance for Paul Walker who tragically died in a car accident in 2013. As it was in mid-production, stand-ins in the form of his brothers and computer technology were used to complete the film. By now I think everyone knows the premise to these films, whether you’ve seen them or not. There’s the same cast as before along with some new faces including Jason Statham (The Expendables, Layer Cake) and there is no doubt that you will see some fancy tricks with some cars.
This film is the first to take place after Tokyo Drift; the previous two took place before those events. So after defeating Owen Shaw and his crew, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) and the rest of the crew are able to return to the United States and live normal lives again as they had wanted. However, Owen's older brother, Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), is after Dom and his crew, seeking revenge for his brother's death and putting the entire crew in danger once more. After learning of Han's death, the crew sets out to find the man who killed one of their own, before he finds them first. I have no doubt that this will do well at the box office, not only because this franchise has huge following but also for the people that want to see Paul Walker in his final acting role. Release date: 3rd April 2015

The Last Five Years Musicals will always be a big hit at the cinema as they have been for many, many years. This one is taken from an award winning Broadway show and stars Anna Kendrick, who after Pitch Perfect and Into the Woods is taking on another musical. The Last 5 Years by Tony award winning composer and lyricist Jason Robert Brown is a musical deconstruction of a love affair and a marriage taking place over a five year period. Jamie Wellerstein (Jeremy Jordan) is a young, talented up and coming Jewish novelist who falls in love with Cathy Hiatt, a struggling actress. Their story is told almost entirely through songs using an intercutting time line device; all of Cathy's songs begin at the
end of their marriage and move backwards in time to the beginning of their love affair while Jamie's songs start at the beginning of their affair and move forward to the end of their marriage. They meet in the centre when Jamie proposes. Not a film for those people who are opposed to people expressing themselves through song and dance. But I’m sure that won’t hurt the numbers this film will bring in. Release Date: 17th April 2015
Avengers Age of Ultron After the success of the first film Avengers Assemble, the super heroes are getting together again to fight a new evil named Ultron voiced by the amazingly talented James Spader (Pretty in Pink, The Blacklist). This one is again written and directed by Joss Whedon and features the same characters as before including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo).
him. Along the way the Avengers encounter the powerful twins Pietro and Wanda Maximoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen), as well as the familiar The Vision (Paul Bettany). If this is as big budget and explosive as the last one I’m sure it won’t disappoint audiences the world over. Release Date: 23rd April 2015
With S.H.I.E.L.D. destroyed and the Avengers needing a hiatus from stopping threats, Tony Stark jumpstarts a dormant peacekeeping program, Ultron: a self-aware, self-teaching, artificial intelligence. However, his plan backfires when Ultron decides that humans are the main enemy and sets out to eradicate them from Earth, leaving it up to Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, along with support from Nick Fury and Maria Hill, to stop

AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th Relationships take on a cosy, comfortable aspect at the beginning of April. It's good to know you are loved and appreciated. A Lunar Eclipse on the 4th finds you graduating, publishing some written work, or finishing up a legal matter. The result will be much better than expected. Easter could be stressful, due to a friend's unreasonable demands on your time. The New Moon on the 18th affords a great opportunity for networking. Be sure to attend a professional conference or party near this date. Your family will be a wonderful source of support during the second half of April, offering to run errands and even financial assistance if you are in a position to help. A generous relative may even offer to guarantee a small loan for you. You'll be very flirtatious in the final days of April, thanks to an attractive newcomer to your social circle. The two of you

Ashgate Hospice… My name is Neil Howard and I am a Derybyshire County Senior football referee. And I also crown green bowl for Staveley King George in the Chesterfield & District League. I am sending this email in the hope that clubs will open their hearts and help sponsor me on this challenge. Please find attached a sponsorship form for your attention. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. On Sunday the 26th July 2015 I am competing in the JE James and Derbyshire Times Flagg 50 miles cycle challenge around the Derbyshire Peaks in aid of Ashgate Hospice. And hope to raise much needed funds for the Hospice.
This year's challenge will leave the Hospice and head out to Barlow and surrounding area covering 50 miles in total. It is hoped that around 200 cyclists will take to the road, doing either the 50 miles or 25 miles for the Hospice. Ashgate Hospicecare opened on Monday 10th October 1988 as a purpose built specialist palliative care unit for people of North Derbyshire following an initial appeal launched by the Duke of Devenshire in June 1985, which raised £710,000. Ashgate Hospice care was created by upgrading Ashgate Annexe which is a grade 2 listed building believed to date back to the 1600's, using a new extension
which mainly housed the wards and patient areas and converting the old house to a day centre and officers. Ashgate Hospice care is a independent registered charity that provides specialist palliative and end of life care and support to adults and their families across North Derbyshire. The needs of the patients, their families friends and carers are fundamental to the philosophy of the Hospice and their aims to enable people to achieve the best possible quality of life in accordance with their wishes. Chesterfield Pub… …to be redeveloped as local centre. Preliminary plans for the redevelopment of The Trumpeter have been presented to the residents and local groups of Grangewood in Chesterfield. Unlike other developments throughout the country The Trumpeter is not simply being converted into another convenience store. Instead the demolition of The Trumpeter will enable a complete redevelopment of the site, creating a new local centre. The proposals for the site include a new Pub/cafe-bar and convenience store along with 3-4 independent retail units, potentially creating 30 new jobs in the local area. Terry Caton, Developer, said “Caton Enterprises Ltd is a local business operating in Chesterfield for some 23 years. As such we didn’t just want to take away the facilities from the community. We wanted to look at this site in a different way.’ Martin Rix, of MAD architects LLP, says ‘We are trying to create a new retail centre for the community, providing facilities and services which are much needed in the area, and hopefully this development can act as a catalyst for further improvements locally.’ Terry continues ‘Over the last
couple of months we have been canvassing opinions from local residents & groups to ensure we are providing the right mix of shops and services on the site to ensure long term viability.' The design team are looking to finalise the design for the scheme over the coming weeks with a view to submitting a planning application to Chesterfield Borough Council. Terry say ‘Subject to getting the appropriate approvals, we are looking to open the new local retail centre to the public in 2016’. Further details about the proposed development, including a feedback questionnaire can be found on the architects website (www.madarchitects.co.uk) and enquiries about the project can be made to the developer via email (development@thetrumpeter.co.uk).

Accessible Derbyshire Joins… … VISIT ENGLAND 'THINK TANK' Blackpool was the venue last week for Visit England's national conference on Accessible Tourism. Entitled: 'Unlocking the Purple Pound' this free event was designed to help owners and managers improve their facilities and services for disabled people and others with accessibility needs – a market now worth £12.4 billion to England’s tourism Industry. Held In English Tourism Week on Wednesday 18th March 2015 at Sandastle Waterpark, Blackpool, the conference was aimed at those who recognised the business opportunities of good access for all but were unsure how best to approach it and who wanted to find simple, low-cost ways of improving the experience for all their visitors. The event was free event was aimed at tourism operators throughout England, from small B&Bs to large visitor attractions. Attending the workshop were Gillian Scotford and Jane Carver from local charity Accessible Derbyshire. The pair delivered workshops sessions in the afternoon of the conference on 'the customer journey and how to improve it'. This interactive session enabled participants to develop practical ways to
improve their accessibility for customers with access needs. Gillian Scotford, co-founder of Accessible Derbyshire said: “The conference was fantastic: it was enjoyable and informative as well as providing a rare chance to share thoughts and ideas with so many others in the industry. The workshop sessions in the afternoon worked extremely well and we had lots of great feedback. We would love anyone who is interested in taking part in a similar session locally to get in touch. Accessible Tourism is a very lucrative market and we want to help businesses increase their share." The following day the pair were guests of Visit England at an ‘invitation only' 'Think Tank' on accessible tourism for key strategic partners the aim of which was to explore innovative ideas to advance the development of accessible England. The 'Think Tank' was attended by thought-leaders on
accessible tourism from around the country and explored the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and barriers to accessible tourism in England. Jane Carver, co-founder of Accessible Derbyshire said that: "Gillian and I were really honoured to be invited to the session. It was a fantastic opportunity to contribute our ideas alongside other key partners in the accessible tourism sector and we can't wait to help take forward the ideas generated." Ross Calladine, Head of Accessibility at Visit England commented that: "The Think Tank was Extremely productive and advanced the conversation and thinking around this important subject.” Anyone interested in learning more about accessible tourism should email Gillian and Jane at info@accessiblederbyshire.org.

ON YOUR MARKS…GET SET…QUACK They’re under starter’s orders again for the race of year – the Ey Up Mi Duck race along the River Derwent, Derby, in aid of Sight Support Derbyshire. On Saturday 13th June Cathedral Green will once again be in the thick of the action as thousands of little yellow rubber ducks battle it out to be the first past the winning post. The entertainment starts at 11am with fun and games for all the family at Cathedral Green, plus stalls selling hot food, refreshments and lots more. The race starts from St Mary’s Bridge at 1pm, with the winner announced at 2pm. It costs just £1 for a ticket to enter a duck in the race, with a £250
winner’s prize at stake. Giant ducks are also available now at £30 each to decorate before the race – these are ideal for work colleagues or community groups. Tickets are available now from Sight Support Derbyshire, 65-69 Nottingham Road, Derby, and will also be on sale from our kiosk at Cathedral Green before noon on the day. The Ey Up Mi Duck Race is Sight Support Derbyshire’s biggest annual fundraising event, and the money raised will go towards giving practical, emotional and social support to blind and visually impaired adults and children across
Derbyshire. Eileen Bagguley, Sight Support Derbyshire’s Fundraising and Communications Manager, said: “Whatever the weather, it’s good for ducks, and this event is not to be missed. Derby may have given its name to one of the most famous horse races in the world, but on 13th June there’s no doubt where the real thoroughbreds will be.” “Our thanks go to Lubrizol and Flint Bishop, whose support is helping fund the cost of the event this year.” To buy a large duck, or to get books of tickets to sell at work or in the community, contact fundraising@sightsupportderbyshire .org.uk or call 01332 287027.
