Hospice’s Plea To Keep Patients Home For Christmas… In the lead up to Christmas, families across North Derbyshire will be making arrangements to visit loved ones during the festive period. For some, the thought of being at home for Christmas is not one that is taken for granted. To help keep families together this Christmas, Chesterfield based Ashgate Hospicecare have launched their ‘Home for Christmas’ Appeal which aims to keep people with life-limiting illnesses at home with their family over the festive holiday. The hospice’s specialist nurses and support staff will make approximately 250 home visits in the lead up to Christmas. Some of these visits will be from our occupational therapists to ensure the necessary equipment is in place, which will enable patients to stay in their own homes. These visits, which reduce the possibility of a patient being admitted to hospital, will cost £15,000. To ensure these crucial home visits are made, Ashgate Hospicecare are asking for donations towards their Home for Christmas Appeal so no one has to be apart from their family this Christmas. One patient who has received care and support from the hospice in
the lead up to Christmas is Rita Mellor. Rita has been living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for 25 years and also has dementia. Alice, a Hospice at Home Support Worker, has been visiting Rita and her hu sband Malcolm for over 2 years after being referred to Ashgate Hospicecare by their GP. Having Alice visit every Friday for just three hours is a real help for both Malcolm and Rita. Malcolm says, “It’s nice when Alice comes and we can have a natter and a brew. We’ve built up a relationship and Rita is comfortable with her. I don’t know how many people actually realise what the hospice does in the community and in people’s own homes. I didn’t know myself until I got involved with it. It’s wonderful. “Times like Christmas, there are a lot of people out there that are on their own and they don’t get any help at all. But when Alice comes in the lead up to Christmas, she helps me put the tree up, which Rita loves because she loves to see the lights. I can pop and do my Christmas shopping for a couple of hours, which I couldn’t do if Alice wasn’t at home looking after Rita. At Christmas you have to think about people that
are ill and on their own and who need support. That support is there from the hospice and it’s lovely. “Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year, which is when Alice normally visits us. A fortnight ago Alice got her diary out and decided she was going to visit us on Tuesday instead, so she’s shuffled things around to make sure Rita still gets her weekly visit! Which means I can spend Tuesday doing some last minute things before Christmas!” For those who are too unwell to stay at home, Ashgate Hospicecare brings Christmas to the hospice and makes patients and their families feel as comfortable and at home as possible. A donation of just £5 can pay for a home cooked Christmas dinner, so patients who aren’t able to make it home for Christmas can still enjoy festivities with their family at the hospice. To find out more visit www.ashgatehospicecare.org.uk/getinvolved/home-for-christmas-appeal or text SANTA to 70660 to donate £5 today!

PETS CORNER - Dangers in the garden…
Cat behaviour Here at Calagran Four Paws Hotel we deal with giving cats as well as dogs a great holiday so thought it was about time this month we turned our attention to the feline furry friends in our life. How they behave and why? Why do Cats silent meow? – There are a number of theories on this one but the most interesting is that the meow is actually not silent but the pitch and frequency are too high to be audible to humans, a bit like a dog whistle. Why do some cats love catnip? – Catnip is a plant with the proper name of Nepeta Cataria. The active chemical in the plant is Neptalactone. In studies it has been shown that Neptalactone in about 80% of cats can have the same effect on a cat as LSD has on humans. Fortunately the effect is short lived and harmless. Why do cats have rough tongues? – It is suggested that there are two main reasons for the roughness of a
cats tongue. The main one is to have a built in grooming device. The cats tongue actually has built in hook shaped barbs that face backwards. These are great for grooming but also historically it is very effective for removing flesh from the bones of prey that has fallen victim to the feline. Why do cats find non cat people more attractive? – Generally people who like cats will behave in a way that puts cats off and vice versa. Cat lovers will stare at a cat, move towards them and make gestures in their direction both verbal and physical. Cats find this forward approach threatening and often back away. Conversely non cat lovers won’t look or move towards the cat and they find this non-threatening and intriguing and so much to the non-cat lover’s dismay will actually encourage the cat’s curiosity and approach. Why do cats hate aerosol sprays? – There are a number of reasons why cats aren’t happy when you spray that air freshener near them. Firstly the noise sounds like that of an aggressive cat hissing so this immedi-
ately puts cats on their guard. Secondly the hairs on cat’s bodies help them feel their surroundings and the spray will agitate these quickly and suddenly which will also be unpleasant. Finally cats sense of smell like dogs are much better than ours and so that air freshener may not smell quite as nice to them. There is so much more to understand about our feline friends but I hope that wets your appetite to find out more. Just one last word for this month to let you know that Calagran Four Paws Hotel is growing our services and this month has seen our new securely fenced two acre play park paddock opened for guests of the hotel and for hire by the hour. Also we are very excited to announce the opening of a new grooming parlour onsite, Paws Galore run by Gemma Baron.

You'll be able to strike a very good deal in the opening days of December. This is one of the best times of year to sign a contract. Take care to negotiate a fair deal for yourself or you could rob yourself of significant sums of money. A talented legal professional will give you the guidance you need. Don't begrudge them of their fee; this expert is worth every penny you pay. The New Moon on the 11th is ideal for launching a fundraiser for underprivileged members of your community. An Evening With Howard Jones Solo… (The Songs, The Piano & The Stories) announces February 2016 UK Tour and comes to SHEFFIELD – City Hall on Sunday 14 February! It was in 1983 that Howard Jones first burst upon the contemporary music scene with his very English songwriting, pioneering synthesizers and thought provoking lyrics. He set out his manifesto in his very first single ‘ New Song’. The lyrics called on the listener to challenge their preconceived ideas, to see both sides and ‘throw off your mental chains’. New Song was recently used in a pivotal scene in ‘Breaking Bad’ where Aaron Paul’s character Jessie Pinkman questions if he wants to ‘play by the rules’. New Song peaked at number 3 in the UK singles charts. th
Along with ‘New Song’, The first two albums, ‘Humans Lib’ and ‘Dream into Action’, brought Howard a host of hits including ‘Things Can Only Get Better’,
‘What is Love?’, ‘Pearl In The Shell’, ‘Like to Get To know You Well’, ‘Hide And Seek’ (performed at Live Aid), ‘Look Mama’ and ‘No One Is To Blame’, which reached No.1 in the US. Howard has sold over 8 million albums across the globe and is one of a select group of British artists who have comprehensively ‘broken America’.
Howard Jones solo shows are an intimate trip through Howard's 30 year music career. Many of his best known 14 February songs were composed on his favourite SHEFFIELD – City Hall instrument; the piano. Howard shares Box Office No: 0114 278 9789 behind the scenes stories and reveals Website the inspiration behind the songs in http://www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk/ev ents/Howard-Jones these rare acoustic shows. Perez On The Podium… Seb Perez scored a tremendous podium finish to wrap up his 2015 motor racing season during the KICK Start Energy Ginetta Junior Winter Series at Snetterton (7/8 November). The Chesterfield-based teenager was racing in a fiercely competitive field for the Ginetta Junior Winter Series, which was contested by 14 to 17 year-old racers in four races over one weekend at the Norwich track. Seb’s race programme is supported by Morris Lubricants. Conditions were very wet throughout Saturday and Seb started race one from 11th place on the grid. In a fighting drive in tricky conditions he got as high as fifth place before being tagged by another car and spun round on the final lap. He recovered quickly and battled home in ninth place, which dictated his starting position for race two later on Saturday. Once again,
he made good progress to finish seventh. Track conditions were better on Sunday and Seb turned in a brilliant drive in the day’s first race to storm up from ninth on the grid to finish third and score his first motor racing podium. He started from third on the grid for the weekend’s fourth and final race but ran wide onto the grass on the opening lap and ended the race in 12th place. “That’s a great way to finish the season and it’s really good to score a first podium,” said Seb. “We had a complete mixed bag of track conditions, so it was more good experience. I hope we can carry that form into next season and get some more podiums, including the top step!”
