Becky’s Movie Previews Happy New Year to All! A new year is upon us and so is award season so keep an eye out for those big releases. Here is what is showing at the cinema in February.

Coming Soon…

50 Shades Freed The third in the 50 Shades series concludes the story of Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson, How to be Single) and Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan, 50 Shades) and their unconventional love story. Ana and Christian are now newlyweds and after returning from their extended honeymoon things don’t get off to a great start when Ana

15:17 to Paris

14

decides to keep her maiden name at work. Old rivals return in the form of Christian’s former flame and Ana’s ex-employer who both cause a number of troubles in their own way. There are secrets, kidnapping, ransoms and reconciliations all in one film. Those that have been waiting for this will be happy with the outcome. It might be worth a look if you made it through the first two. Release date: 9th February 2018

From acclaimed director Clint Eastwood (American Sniper, J. Edgar, Million Dollar Baby) comes a true story of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. In the early evening of August 21, 2015, the world watched as the media reported a thwarted terrorist attack on a train bound for Paris—an attempt prevented by three courageous young Americans traveling through Europe. The film follows the course of the friends’ lives, from the struggles of childhood through finding their footing in life, to the series of unlikely events leading up to the attack. Throughout the harrowing ordeal, their friendship never wavers, making it their greatest weapon and allowing them to save the lives of the more than 500 passengers on board. The heroic trio is

comprised of Anthony Sadler, Oregon National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos, and U.S. Air Force Airman First Class Spencer Stone who, amazingly, play themselves in the film. This is a great film to watch to remember what truly brave and courageous people there are in this world, and not just the bad. Eastwood took the step in casting the actual men that the story is based on as he knew these were the only ones that could bring the story to the big screen. Lucky then that the men could act as well as save lives. Release date: 9th February 2018

Father Figures

On a less serious and dramatic note comes a comedy starring Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers, Zoolander) and Ed Helms (The Hangover) as fraternal twin brothers. Fraternal twin brothers, Kyle and Peter Reynolds (Wilson and Helms), aren’t the closet and have learned that their biological father did not die when they were young, as they had previously believed, and that their eccentric mother, Helen Baxter (Glenn Close, Fatal Attraction), had been sexually promiscuous in the 1970s. When they go on a road trip to find out who their father is, they discover

I, Tonya

Most people are aware of who Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan are; the figure skating competitors who competed in the early 90’s, the bitter rivalry that ended in a brutal attack and the end of a career of an Olympic athlete. This film goes through the story of what led to the moment Kerrigan

more family secrets and more about their mother than they probably ever wanted to know. They also encounter a mysterious hitchhiker and other misadventures, as they go through a journey of self-discovery about their family, themselves, and each other. Not a film that will break any records but if you fancy a change from all the drama then this is some light relief. Release date: 16th February 2018

was attacked and the reasons behind it. The film starts in the mid-1970s with four year-old Tonya (Margot Robbie, Suicide Squad) being forced to skate by her mother (Allison Janney, The Help, Juno, Mom) through cruelty and neglect. As Tonya grows up, she rapidly becomes one of the best figure skaters in the United States after her mother takes her out of school to focus exclusively on her athletic career. She finally breaks free of her mother’s grasp and asserts her independence by marrying boyfriend Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan, Captain America). Gillooly intermittently beats her and she has to contend with biases against her in the figure skating community for being deemed white trash. She ends up competing in the 1992 Winter Olympics but comes in a disappointing fourth place and returns to her hometown to waitress. She attempts a comeback and, in order to assist, Gillooly's friend Shawn Eckhardt takes it upon himself to arrange an attack on Harding's rival Nancy Kerrigan which rapidly escalates into the FBI arresting everyone for conspiracy. She is still

Feb/Mar 2018

allowed to compete in the 1994 Winter Olympics but comes in eighth place. She ends up on trial afterwards for her silence about the Kerrigan attack and part of her sentence involves being barred from competitive figure skating. She resorts to foxy boxing and becoming a landscaper. For those that don’t really know the story and imagine it was Harding wielding a bat that attacked Kerrigan, this film will clarify the key points of the event. Where she may not be 100% guilty, she isn’t completely innocent either. Was she driven to extreme measures because of her cruel upbringing or her violent husband? You can decide for yourself and go and see this film. With plenty of awards already won by stars Robbie and Janney there may be more on the way with the BAFTAs and Academy Awards still to come. Release date: 23rd February 2018

“The old Co-op is a dominant building in the town Centre and it has been difficult to see it closed over the past few years. Seeing work start to bring it back in to use gives the town a real confidence boost. “The growth of Internet shopping is causing hard times on high streets up and down the country but as people see work progress on this building they will see the northern side of the town centre coming back to life. The customers of this development will support existing town centre shops and help encourage other retailers

to open shops to replace those that have closed down.” Peter Swallow, chair of Destination Chesterfield, added:- “The start of work on transforming the former Co-op building on Elder Way is a major step forward in the development of Northern Gateway and the regeneration of the town centre. “Chesterfield is going through some very exciting times

and the redevelopment of the Co-op building is just one of a number of development opportunities that are now coming to fruition which will change the face of the town and change it for the better so that it is equipped it for the future. “It is a key development in helping increase the vitality of the town centre as well as preparing Chesterfield to take full advantage of the opportunities that the HS2 station will bring with it.” The wider Northern Gateway scheme will see an enterprise zone for small and medium sized businesses on part of the site of Holywell Cross (Donut) car park and refurbishment of the existing Saltergate multi-storey car park. It is estimated the scheme will create around 500 jobs.

Markham Miners Memorial… Markham miners remembered with memorial unveiling 80 years after 1938 tragedy Seven new life-size steel figures have been unveiled as part of a memorial to miners who lost their lives at Markham Colliery nearly 80 years since the 1938 disaster at the site.

On 10 May 1938, 79 miners lost their lives and 40 were seriously injured in an explosion at Markham Colliery which has now been reclaimed by us and Henry Boot Developments and is home to the Markham Vale regeneration scheme. The steel figures were unveiled as part of the ‘Walking Together’ memorial ‐ led by Derbyshire County Council ‐ which will eventually feature 106 figures stretching between the village of Duckmanton in Chesterfield and the former pithead. Each figure is part of a walking trail which symbolises a miner’s journey to the pit and back home again and represents the 106 men who lost their lives in three accidents at the site. On 21 January 1937 an underground explosion claimed the lives of nine men and 18 miners died and 11 others suffered serious injury in the third disaster at the colliery when the mechanical brake on a lift carrying them

to the coalface failed on 30 July 1973. The most recent figures have been dedicated to Arthur Henson (45) who was employed at the colliery in the role known as a ripper, Herbert Hargreaves, contractor (48) and his two sons Herbert Hargreaves Jnr, contractor (27) and Leslie Hargreaves, contractor (23), Albert Ernest Rodgers, haulage hand (19), Robert Henry Wood, haulage hand (22) and Robert Simms, contractor (56). There are now 34 figures at the site ‐ the first two were unveiled in 2013 to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1973 disaster. Councillor Tony King, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration at Derbyshire County Council, said: “The Walking Together memorial is a Henry Boot Developments ‐ Derbyshire County Council’s private sector property special place where the miner’s community spirit can be remembered partner and AJA Architects ‐ the and where families, friends and future designers of many buildings on generations can come together to pay Markham Vale ‐ have sponsored the other two figures. tribute. “Great friendships were made at the site and generations of Each figure carries a tag with the name of one of the miners, along with their age families worked there like Herbert Hargreaves and his two sons who were and job role. lost in the explosion in 1938. “The site is now home to 42 Relatives of the miners commemorated businesses and many new jobs have at the unveiling also attended the event been created but it’s important that we to pay tribute along with pupils from don’t forget the site’s mining history and Duckmanton Primary School who the incredibly brave men that worked performed a song and laid flowers. there.” Five of the figures have The Walking Together memorial has been sponsored through a grant of been designed by Cheshire-based artist £7,500 awarded to the ‘Walking Together’ Stephen Broadbent. memorial from the Duke of Devonshire’s Charitable Trust.

History Of Valentines Day THE LEGEND OF ST. VALENTINE The history of Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Did You Know? Approximately 150 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine's Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas. The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl–possibly his jailor’s daughter–who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and– most

importantly–romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France. ORIGINS OF VALENTINE’S DAY: A PAGAN FESTIVAL IN FEBRUARY While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial–which probably occurred around A.D. 270–others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat’s hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city’s bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage. VALENTINE’S DAY: A DAY OF ROMANCE Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity and but was outlawed—as it was deemed “un-Christian”–at the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day. It was not until much later, however, that the day became definitively associated with love. During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be a day for romance. Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages, though written Valentine’s didn’t begin to appear

until after 1400. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. (The greeting is now part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England.) Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois. TYPICAL VALENTINE’S DAY GREETINGS In addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. In Great Britain, Valentine’s Day began to be popularly celebrated around the 17th century. By the middle of the 18th, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines in America. Howland, known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as “scrap.” Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.

PETS CORNER - Alabama Rot Advice…

There has been increasing reports in the press of something striking fear into the heart of dog owners called Alabama rot or it’s more technical term (Cutaneous and Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy or CRGV). As yet there are no cases within a twenty-mile radius of us but as we all travel, take our pets on holiday and other dogs travel into our area it is something to be aware of because quick action can be the difference between life and death. As yet no one knows what is causing Alabama rot, so any treatment is symptomatic and over 80% of dogs that do contract it go on to develop organ failure and in particular kidney failure and die. It is not breed specific and can effect any breed, sex, age or size of dog. In the UK cases are increasing but just over a hundred canine deaths have already been recorded. sleep with earplugs (as long as your partner’s on duty), have some wind down time. Basically, take time to fill your cup. I recently told a client a story about a teacher who held a glass of water out to her class. She asked the class how heavy the glass was and the expected discussion ensued, with students guessing the weight. After hearing everyone’s opinion the teacher put the glass down and stated: “Absolute weight doesn’t matter really. It depends on how long you hold it. If you hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem. If you hold it for an hour, you’ll have an ache in your arm. If you hold it for a day, you’ll be in severe pain. In each case, the weight of the water doesn’t change, but the longer it’s held, the harder it is. What if you add more water? How long until you physically have to drop the glass?” I love this analogy. We can all cope with stress. We can all work through it, but we all get to the point where we have to drop the glass. But what stops us from just putting it down before we get to that stage? There is ALWAYS something we can change, even when we don’t think that there is.

This month I wanted to talk about something really important to me, that as a therapist is so easy to overlook in myself. This is burn out, exhaustion or a general feeling of being rundown. I’m there and I’ve probably been teetering on the edge for a while. I recognised it over Christmas, and luckily I’m in a position where I can do something about it. It happens for different people for many reasons. I see if SO often in working mums who are trying to juggle family and home. I see it in corporate clients who are trying to maintain the required social life with their workloads, and their families. I see it in the partners of people working through depression or illness. It’s a totally regular and sadly “normal” part of life. BUT, recognising it and taking steps to deal with it as early as you can is vital.
